  3. ARCHAEOLOGISTS have made an exciting discovery after finding the ruins of what could be one of the four "temples of the sun" in Ancient Egypt. Researchers were excavating the Abuir Necropolis near Saqqara in Egypt when they discovered evidence of a building made of mud brick and quartz blocks. But this discovery among the site of 14 royal pyramids, mastabas and tombs could be special. That's because officials at Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities claim it could be the remains of an ancient lost sun temple, one of only four. Sun temples were built to honor the ancient Egyptian god Ra, god of the sun, order, kings and the sky. These temples are believed to date back to the 5th Dynasty (2465-2323 BC). The building was discovered by the joint mission of Italian and Polish archaeologists, who found the suspected sun temple under the temple of King Nyuserre. Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism said in a statement: "The building is accessible through an entrance constructed of limestone, which leads to an area with a paved floor and containing huge blocks of quartz." A mud brick building found in Abusir is believed to be an ancient Egyptian temple of the lost sun (Image: Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism) A number of ceramic vessels and beer mugs were found inside the building (Photo: Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism) He added: "Preliminary studies indicate that the new find could be one of the four lost sun temples dating back to the 5th Dynasty." According to the ministry, part of the building was demolished by the king to build his temple. A number of ceramic vessels and beer glasses were found inside the building, the ministry said. Red-rimmed vessels believed to be used in temple rituals and ceremonies were also found. By studying pottery in particular, archaeologists hope to gain new insights into ancient Egyptians alive during the Fifth Dynasty. Click
  4. Big tech companies like Apple, Google or Facebook face many legislative regulations that could affect the way they operate, and a new US law promises to do just that. Earlier this month, a bill that would have forced Apple and Google to make some changes to the App Store and Play Store, respectively, was defeated in the North Dakota State Senate. The giants would no longer be allowed to force app and game developers to use their own payment method in the app store. Additionally, no company will be allowed to take action against developers who want to use a different distribution method or payment platform. Even though the bill failed to pass in North Dakota, many believed that other states would soon try to pass similar legislation. Arizona State is set to do the same. An amendment to the Arizona House Bill is headed to the state House of Representatives. The bill "restricts the ability of certain digital app distribution platforms to require the use of a specific in-app payment system." In other words, if the bill becomes law, Apple and Google would not be able to force developers to use their in-app payment platforms. Companies whose Arizona downloads exceed $1 million could use other payment systems, avoiding Google or Apple taking another 30 percent of the revenue. Erik Neuenschwander, an Apple engineer, said the bill "threatens to destroy the iPhone as you know it" and that the changes would "undermine the privacy, security, safety and performance that are built into the iPhone by design. We're simply working hard to keep bad apps out of the App Store."
  5. A brand new version of the Linux kernel is available for download to end July or signal the beginning of August, depending on your locale! Linux 5.19 is a pretty big update, and it includes a lot of low-level optimizations, some notable improvements to networking support, hugely important security fixes, and more. Announcing the release on the Linux Kernel mailing list, Linus Torvalds notes “… the most interesting part here is that I did the release (and am writing this) on an arm64 laptop. It's something we've been waiting for a long time, and it's finally a reality, thanks to the Asahi team." Asahi is the project to make Linux work on laptops that use Apple Silicon. He also says that the next version of the Linux Kernel is "likely" to be labeled as v6.0 rather than 5.20 - we'll be hearing more about that approach in the coming weeks. Features of Linux Kernel 5.19' The underlying network code for wireless and wired connections, as well as many individual network drivers see improvements in Linux 5.19. This includes support for Big TCP, a driver for pureLiFi (a very exciting new light-based networking technology), and a core driver for Silicon Labs' low-power WFX Wi-Fi IoT receivers. There are also additional improvements to Multi-Path TCP (MPTCP), including user-space support for the MPTCP path manager; Wake-on-LAN support has been added to Qualcomm's ATH11K driver; while the RTW89 wireless driver now includes support for Realtek 8852ce 5GHz devices. Zstd compression is a trend these days, and in Linux 5.19 the kernel picks up support for Zstd compressed firmware. This provides a space-saving alternative to XZ compressed firmware support. Do you have an Intel laptop? Many Linux users have faced issues with their laptop running hot and draining battery faster than expected in sleep mode. Linux kernel 5.19 makes changes to fix this and should mean laptops equipped with Intel Skylake through Comet Lake chips run cooler and don't drain battery while snoozing. There is a huge amount of code related to the Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) subsystem, which is primarily aimed at supporting AMD GPUs, but also benefits Intel and even some ARM GPU chips. On the Apple Silicon side, an Apple M1 NVMe controller and an Apple eFuses driver have been combined to provide additional support for running Linux systems on Apple's game-changing processors (coming now in a clip). Hardware monitoring continues to improve thanks to additions to the HWMON subsystem. In this core, this core brings better sensor coverage to various motherboards, including a lot of boards from ASUS, including their PRIME X470-PRO and ProArt X570 Creator series. There are also code drops to support fan controllers in Aquacomputer's offerings. Owners of the (rather lumpy) Lenovo ThinkPad TrackPoint II keyboard are in for a treat. The device, which is modeled after Lenovo's ThinkPad laptop keyboards, "runs" on earlier versions of the Kernel. But in Linux 5.19 the keyboard gains a "native" mode. This provides a better experience, including proper function button mapping, native scrolling, and support for middle buttons. Continuing with keyboards, Linux 5.19 improves support for Keychron wireless mechanical keyboards. Devices like the Keychron K2 and K10 already work with Linux, but this kernel boost sweetens things up by ensuring that the function keys work reliably, even when switching between the Windows/Mac mode of certain models. Linux 5.19 is available for download as source code right now, although most of us will want to wait for our distribution maintainer to package the update and release it as a software update. On Ubuntu, that won't happen for a while, although Pop!_OS likes (I think) to push out newer kernel versions relatively promptly. Are you feeling brave? You can grab a spot on Canonical's mainline repo for the latest builds, just note that they don't come with any warranty or support guarantee.
  6. Just when you thought PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD's were fast with up to 8 GB/s of sequential read speed, PCIe 5.0 drives have emerged on the horizon that could come with up to 16 GB/s speeds. Silicon Motion said this week that it would start sampling its enterprise-grade SSD controllers with a PCIe Gen 5.0 interface in the second half of next year, which means that they will debut commercially in 2022. This is one of the first times that an SSD controller maker has mentioned a chip with a PCIe 5.0 interface, and even though the controller will debut in the server space, models for consumers will inevitably follow. No Rush for PCIe 5.0 SSDs? The PCIe 5.0 interface will increase data transfer speeds to 32 GT/s per lane, which will increase the total bandwidth provided by a PCIe x16 slot to ~64 GB/s, whereas a PCIe x4 slot can transfer up to ~16 GB/s. Increased transfer rates will be particularly beneficial for various bandwidth-hungry applications, like servers, high-end storage subsystems, and accelerators. Using the PCIe Gen 5 physical layer, various next-gen platforms will also support CXL and Gen-Z protocols designed specifically to connect CPUs with various accelerators and maintain memory and cache coherency at low latencies. The first platforms to support a PCIe 5.0 interface are Intel's 12th-Gen Alder Lake CPUs for client PCs, which are expected to debut in the second half of 2021, as well as the company's 4th Generation Xeon Scalable 'Sapphire Rapids' for data centers and supercomputers that is projected to launch in early 2022. In addition to PCIe 5.0, Sapphire Rapids will also support the CXL 1.1 protocol. So far, several companies have already announced the availability of PCIe 5.0 controllers and PHY IP, and some have demonstrated interoperability of their CXL-enabled PCIe 5.0 solutions with Intel's Sapphire Rapids or verification equipment, whereas Microchip even announced its PCIe 5.0 retimers and switches. However, as numerous developers of SSD controllers and platforms introduced their PCIe 4.0 platforms for servers in the second half of last year, including Kioxia, Microchip, Silicon Motion, SK Hynix, it doesn't seem like they will roll out any new enterprise-grade solutions in the foreseeable future. Of course, some companies tend to introduce next-gen SSDs ahead of competitors, but it does not look like there will be too many PCIe 5.0-supporting enterprise drives available next year, so SMI will be on time with its PCIe Gen 5 controller. The PCIe Gen 5 specification was finalized in mid-2019, around the same time when the first PCIe 4.0-supporting platforms, SSDs, and GPUs were launched. Back then, some thought that the PCIe 4.0 interface will have a short lifespan (because PCIe 5.0 was 'already there') and will not become truly po[CENSORED]r particularly in the data center space, as back then, the only server platform to feature PCIe 4.0 lanes was AMD's EPYC 7002-series 'Rome' that was not truly po[CENSORED]r at the time. As it turns out, while PCIe 5.0 will debut later this year, it does not look that it will immediately replace PCIe 4.0. SMI Mentions First PCIe 5.0 SSD Controller "With our new PCIe Gen5 enterprise SSD controllers sampling in the second half of next year, we are not expecting our enterprise SSD controller to be a material contributor to our $1 billion sales objective," said Wallace Kuo, chief executive of Silicon Motion, during a conference call with analysts and investors (via The Motley Fool). "We are planning on material enterprise SSD controller sales contribution only after 2023." Silicon Motion is a newbie on the market of enterprise SSD controllers. The company first entered China's enterprise SSD market in 2015 after acquiring Shannon Systems, a supplier of enterprise-grade PCIe SSD and storage arrays to Chinese hyperscalers. So far, SMI's enterprise SSD business has not really taken off and represents a fraction of its revenue. Still, the company clearly wants to be a part of the datacenter megatrend, so it will continue to invest in enterprise storage solutions. "We are excited about enterprise-grade PCIe Gen5 controller, which we will have taped out early next year and sample in the second half of 2022," said Kou. "We believe this will bring us a big momentum in coming to enterprise." The chief executive of Silicon Motion naturally did not touch upon technical specifications of the company's upcoming PCIe 5.0 enterprise SSD controller, but its latest SM8266 SoC supports NVMe 1.4, three dual-core Arm Cortex-R5 complexes, 16 NAND channels, and configurable LDPC ECC.

  9. In recent weeks, more details have emerged about the possible partnership between Apple and Hyundai/KIA Motors, through which the automakers would help the Cupertino company build its first electric car. NEWS ON THE SAME TOPIC ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482, the laptop with two screens, available in Romania... Project Titan, as the electric car that Apple wants to make was called, was in the public's attention last week, after many publications in the West announced the possible specifications of the car and other behind the scenes of a partnership concluded between Apple, Hyundai and the subsidiary of the South Korean company, KIA. This week, however, the relationship between the companies would have cooled to the point where the automakers declared that they are no longer in discussions with Apple, according to Bloomberg, quoted by Engadget. Hyundai would then provide its expertise in building electric cars, including the platform for building the Apple Car, while the tech giant would develop the car's hardware and software. The South Koreans confirmed that they have discussed this with Apple, but noted that the Americans "are in discussions with several global automakers, including Hyundai Motors." Production of the car was due to begin in 2024, and rumors said that Apple was rushing to find a partner precisely to launch the car in 2025. However, news of the collapse of the partnership with Hyundai could affect both the start of production and the release date. . The news that Hyundai and KIA are no longer in discussions with Apple for the construction of the Apple Car affected the two eastern companies from a financial point of view, their shares registering decreases of 6.21% (Hyundai Motor) and 15% (KIA Motors ) during yesterday.

  13. Ford has chosen a plant in Valencia to build its next generation electric vehicles in Europe, as the company reorganises its operations. The US automaker selected the site over a rival facility in Saarlouis, Germany. The company plans to only sell electric cars in Europe by 2030, ahead of a planned EU ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles. But there will be "significant" job losses as part of its changing strategy, a spokesperson told Reuters. Electric cars rely more on automated assembly lines to build, requiring less human involvement. Plants that do not secure production orders for electric vehicles, such as the Saarlouis facility, which employs 4,600 workers, face the threat of closure once an EU ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, planned for 2035, comes into force. Even for the sites which are selected for electric vehicle assembly - including the Valencia plant, which employs 6,000 workers - Ford has warned there will still be staffing cuts. The company has a number of additional plants in Europe, including in Cologne in Germany, Turkey, and Romania, which have been selected to produce electric vehicles. Ford has promised to invest $2bn in its Cologne factory, where from next year it will produce electric cars using licensed technology from Volkswagen. The site in Valencia will be responsible for producing all of the Ford car models that use the company's in-house electric vehicle technology. Historically, Ford has struggled to be profitable in Europe, a highly competitive car market. It has used the movement toward electric vehicles as a launching pad for a leaner, restructured business in the region. Ford has already trimmed 12,000 staff from its workforce of more than 50,000 in Europe. "Bringing our all-new electric vehicle architecture to Valencia will help us build a profitable business in Europe," said Stuart Rowley, chairman of Ford's European division. Meanwhile, the company's global chief executive said Ford's pivot to electric vehicles in Europe would require tough decisions. "The European auto industry is extremely competitive, and to thrive and grow we can never settle for less than unbelievably great products... [and] ultra-lean operations," said Jim Farley, Ford's president and chief executive. Sales of electric vehicles in the UK have soared in recent years, with more battery-powered cars registered in 2021 than in the previous five years combined, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Registrations of electric cars rose more than 75%, from 108,000 in 2020 to 191,000 last year. In December, they accounted for one in every four cars sold, while the second-bestselling car in the country during the year was Tesla's electric Model 3.
