  3. ARCHAEOLOGISTS have made an exciting discovery after finding the ruins of what could be one of the four "temples of the sun" in Ancient Egypt. Researchers were excavating the Abuir Necropolis near Saqqara in Egypt when they discovered evidence of a building made of mud brick and quartz blocks. But this discovery among the site of 14 royal pyramids, mastabas and tombs could be special. That's because officials at Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities claim it could be the remains of an ancient lost sun temple, one of only four. Sun temples were built to honor the ancient Egyptian god Ra, god of the sun, order, kings and the sky. These temples are believed to date back to the 5th Dynasty (2465-2323 BC). The building was discovered by the joint mission of Italian and Polish archaeologists, who found the suspected sun temple under the temple of King Nyuserre. Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism said in a statement: "The building is accessible through an entrance constructed of limestone, which leads to an area with a paved floor and containing huge blocks of quartz." A mud brick building found in Abusir is believed to be an ancient Egyptian temple of the lost sun (Image: Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism) A number of ceramic vessels and beer mugs were found inside the building (Photo: Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism) He added: "Preliminary studies indicate that the new find could be one of the four lost sun temples dating back to the 5th Dynasty." According to the ministry, part of the building was demolished by the king to build his temple. A number of ceramic vessels and beer glasses were found inside the building, the ministry said. Red-rimmed vessels believed to be used in temple rituals and ceremonies were also found. By studying pottery in particular, archaeologists hope to gain new insights into ancient Egyptians alive during the Fifth Dynasty. Click
  4. Big tech companies like Apple, Google or Facebook face many legislative regulations that could affect the way they operate, and a new US law promises to do just that. Earlier this month, a bill that would have forced Apple and Google to make some changes to the App Store and Play Store, respectively, was defeated in the North Dakota State Senate. The giants would no longer be allowed to force app and game developers to use their own payment method in the app store. Additionally, no company will be allowed to take action against developers who want to use a different distribution method or payment platform. Even though the bill failed to pass in North Dakota, many believed that other states would soon try to pass similar legislation. Arizona State is set to do the same. An amendment to the Arizona House Bill is headed to the state House of Representatives. The bill "restricts the ability of certain digital app distribution platforms to require the use of a specific in-app payment system." In other words, if the bill becomes law, Apple and Google would not be able to force developers to use their in-app payment platforms. Companies whose Arizona downloads exceed $1 million could use other payment systems, avoiding Google or Apple taking another 30 percent of the revenue. Erik Neuenschwander, an Apple engineer, said the bill "threatens to destroy the iPhone as you know it" and that the changes would "undermine the privacy, security, safety and performance that are built into the iPhone by design. We're simply working hard to keep bad apps out of the App Store."
  5. A brand new version of the Linux kernel is available for download to end July or signal the beginning of August, depending on your locale! Linux 5.19 is a pretty big update, and it includes a lot of low-level optimizations, some notable improvements to networking support, hugely important security fixes, and more. Announcing the release on the Linux Kernel mailing list, Linus Torvalds notes “… the most interesting part here is that I did the release (and am writing this) on an arm64 laptop. It's something we've been waiting for a long time, and it's finally a reality, thanks to the Asahi team." Asahi is the project to make Linux work on laptops that use Apple Silicon. He also says that the next version of the Linux Kernel is "likely" to be labeled as v6.0 rather than 5.20 - we'll be hearing more about that approach in the coming weeks. Features of Linux Kernel 5.19' The underlying network code for wireless and wired connections, as well as many individual network drivers see improvements in Linux 5.19. This includes support for Big TCP, a driver for pureLiFi (a very exciting new light-based networking technology), and a core driver for Silicon Labs' low-power WFX Wi-Fi IoT receivers. There are also additional improvements to Multi-Path TCP (MPTCP), including user-space support for the MPTCP path manager; Wake-on-LAN support has been added to Qualcomm's ATH11K driver; while the RTW89 wireless driver now includes support for Realtek 8852ce 5GHz devices. Zstd compression is a trend these days, and in Linux 5.19 the kernel picks up support for Zstd compressed firmware. This provides a space-saving alternative to XZ compressed firmware support. Do you have an Intel laptop? Many Linux users have faced issues with their laptop running hot and draining battery faster than expected in sleep mode. Linux kernel 5.19 makes changes to fix this and should mean laptops equipped with Intel Skylake through Comet Lake chips run cooler and don't drain battery while snoozing. There is a huge amount of code related to the Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) subsystem, which is primarily aimed at supporting AMD GPUs, but also benefits Intel and even some ARM GPU chips. On the Apple Silicon side, an Apple M1 NVMe controller and an Apple eFuses driver have been combined to provide additional support for running Linux systems on Apple's game-changing processors (coming now in a clip). Hardware monitoring continues to improve thanks to additions to the HWMON subsystem. In this core, this core brings better sensor coverage to various motherboards, including a lot of boards from ASUS, including their PRIME X470-PRO and ProArt X570 Creator series. There are also code drops to support fan controllers in Aquacomputer's offerings. Owners of the (rather lumpy) Lenovo ThinkPad TrackPoint II keyboard are in for a treat. The device, which is modeled after Lenovo's ThinkPad laptop keyboards, "runs" on earlier versions of the Kernel. But in Linux 5.19 the keyboard gains a "native" mode. This provides a better experience, including proper function button mapping, native scrolling, and support for middle buttons. Continuing with keyboards, Linux 5.19 improves support for Keychron wireless mechanical keyboards. Devices like the Keychron K2 and K10 already work with Linux, but this kernel boost sweetens things up by ensuring that the function keys work reliably, even when switching between the Windows/Mac mode of certain models. Linux 5.19 is available for download as source code right now, although most of us will want to wait for our distribution maintainer to package the update and release it as a software update. On Ubuntu, that won't happen for a while, although Pop!_OS likes (I think) to push out newer kernel versions relatively promptly. Are you feeling brave? You can grab a spot on Canonical's mainline repo for the latest builds, just note that they don't come with any warranty or support guarantee.
  6. Just when you thought PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD's were fast with up to 8 GB/s of sequential read speed, PCIe 5.0 drives have emerged on the horizon that could come with up to 16 GB/s speeds. Silicon Motion said this week that it would start sampling its enterprise-grade SSD controllers with a PCIe Gen 5.0 interface in the second half of next year, which means that they will debut commercially in 2022. This is one of the first times that an SSD controller maker has mentioned a chip with a PCIe 5.0 interface, and even though the controller will debut in the server space, models for consumers will inevitably follow. No Rush for PCIe 5.0 SSDs? The PCIe 5.0 interface will increase data transfer speeds to 32 GT/s per lane, which will increase the total bandwidth provided by a PCIe x16 slot to ~64 GB/s, whereas a PCIe x4 slot can transfer up to ~16 GB/s. Increased transfer rates will be particularly beneficial for various bandwidth-hungry applications, like servers, high-end storage subsystems, and accelerators. Using the PCIe Gen 5 physical layer, various next-gen platforms will also support CXL and Gen-Z protocols designed specifically to connect CPUs with various accelerators and maintain memory and cache coherency at low latencies. The first platforms to support a PCIe 5.0 interface are Intel's 12th-Gen Alder Lake CPUs for client PCs, which are expected to debut in the second half of 2021, as well as the company's 4th Generation Xeon Scalable 'Sapphire Rapids' for data centers and supercomputers that is projected to launch in early 2022. In addition to PCIe 5.0, Sapphire Rapids will also support the CXL 1.1 protocol. So far, several companies have already announced the availability of PCIe 5.0 controllers and PHY IP, and some have demonstrated interoperability of their CXL-enabled PCIe 5.0 solutions with Intel's Sapphire Rapids or verification equipment, whereas Microchip even announced its PCIe 5.0 retimers and switches. However, as numerous developers of SSD controllers and platforms introduced their PCIe 4.0 platforms for servers in the second half of last year, including Kioxia, Microchip, Silicon Motion, SK Hynix, it doesn't seem like they will roll out any new enterprise-grade solutions in the foreseeable future. Of course, some companies tend to introduce next-gen SSDs ahead of competitors, but it does not look like there will be too many PCIe 5.0-supporting enterprise drives available next year, so SMI will be on time with its PCIe Gen 5 controller. The PCIe Gen 5 specification was finalized in mid-2019, around the same time when the first PCIe 4.0-supporting platforms, SSDs, and GPUs were launched. Back then, some thought that the PCIe 4.0 interface will have a short lifespan (because PCIe 5.0 was 'already there') and will not become truly po[CENSORED]r particularly in the data center space, as back then, the only server platform to feature PCIe 4.0 lanes was AMD's EPYC 7002-series 'Rome' that was not truly po[CENSORED]r at the time. As it turns out, while PCIe 5.0 will debut later this year, it does not look that it will immediately replace PCIe 4.0. SMI Mentions First PCIe 5.0 SSD Controller "With our new PCIe Gen5 enterprise SSD controllers sampling in the second half of next year, we are not expecting our enterprise SSD controller to be a material contributor to our $1 billion sales objective," said Wallace Kuo, chief executive of Silicon Motion, during a conference call with analysts and investors (via The Motley Fool). "We are planning on material enterprise SSD controller sales contribution only after 2023." Silicon Motion is a newbie on the market of enterprise SSD controllers. The company first entered China's enterprise SSD market in 2015 after acquiring Shannon Systems, a supplier of enterprise-grade PCIe SSD and storage arrays to Chinese hyperscalers. So far, SMI's enterprise SSD business has not really taken off and represents a fraction of its revenue. Still, the company clearly wants to be a part of the datacenter megatrend, so it will continue to invest in enterprise storage solutions. "We are excited about enterprise-grade PCIe Gen5 controller, which we will have taped out early next year and sample in the second half of 2022," said Kou. "We believe this will bring us a big momentum in coming to enterprise." The chief executive of Silicon Motion naturally did not touch upon technical specifications of the company's upcoming PCIe 5.0 enterprise SSD controller, but its latest SM8266 SoC supports NVMe 1.4, three dual-core Arm Cortex-R5 complexes, 16 NAND channels, and configurable LDPC ECC.

  9. In recent weeks, more details have emerged about the possible partnership between Apple and Hyundai/KIA Motors, through which the automakers would help the Cupertino company build its first electric car. NEWS ON THE SAME TOPIC ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482, the laptop with two screens, available in Romania... Project Titan, as the electric car that Apple wants to make was called, was in the public's attention last week, after many publications in the West announced the possible specifications of the car and other behind the scenes of a partnership concluded between Apple, Hyundai and the subsidiary of the South Korean company, KIA. This week, however, the relationship between the companies would have cooled to the point where the automakers declared that they are no longer in discussions with Apple, according to Bloomberg, quoted by Engadget. Hyundai would then provide its expertise in building electric cars, including the platform for building the Apple Car, while the tech giant would develop the car's hardware and software. The South Koreans confirmed that they have discussed this with Apple, but noted that the Americans "are in discussions with several global automakers, including Hyundai Motors." Production of the car was due to begin in 2024, and rumors said that Apple was rushing to find a partner precisely to launch the car in 2025. However, news of the collapse of the partnership with Hyundai could affect both the start of production and the release date. . The news that Hyundai and KIA are no longer in discussions with Apple for the construction of the Apple Car affected the two eastern companies from a financial point of view, their shares registering decreases of 6.21% (Hyundai Motor) and 15% (KIA Motors ) during yesterday.

  13. Ford has chosen a plant in Valencia to build its next generation electric vehicles in Europe, as the company reorganises its operations. The US automaker selected the site over a rival facility in Saarlouis, Germany. The company plans to only sell electric cars in Europe by 2030, ahead of a planned EU ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles. But there will be "significant" job losses as part of its changing strategy, a spokesperson told Reuters. Electric cars rely more on automated assembly lines to build, requiring less human involvement. Plants that do not secure production orders for electric vehicles, such as the Saarlouis facility, which employs 4,600 workers, face the threat of closure once an EU ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, planned for 2035, comes into force. Even for the sites which are selected for electric vehicle assembly - including the Valencia plant, which employs 6,000 workers - Ford has warned there will still be staffing cuts. The company has a number of additional plants in Europe, including in Cologne in Germany, Turkey, and Romania, which have been selected to produce electric vehicles. Ford has promised to invest $2bn in its Cologne factory, where from next year it will produce electric cars using licensed technology from Volkswagen. The site in Valencia will be responsible for producing all of the Ford car models that use the company's in-house electric vehicle technology. Historically, Ford has struggled to be profitable in Europe, a highly competitive car market. It has used the movement toward electric vehicles as a launching pad for a leaner, restructured business in the region. Ford has already trimmed 12,000 staff from its workforce of more than 50,000 in Europe. "Bringing our all-new electric vehicle architecture to Valencia will help us build a profitable business in Europe," said Stuart Rowley, chairman of Ford's European division. Meanwhile, the company's global chief executive said Ford's pivot to electric vehicles in Europe would require tough decisions. "The European auto industry is extremely competitive, and to thrive and grow we can never settle for less than unbelievably great products... [and] ultra-lean operations," said Jim Farley, Ford's president and chief executive. Sales of electric vehicles in the UK have soared in recent years, with more battery-powered cars registered in 2021 than in the previous five years combined, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Registrations of electric cars rose more than 75%, from 108,000 in 2020 to 191,000 last year. In December, they accounted for one in every four cars sold, while the second-bestselling car in the country during the year was Tesla's electric Model 3.
  14. New rumors from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo provide information on the features and specifications of the electric car the Cupertino company is working on. RELATED NEWS Ericsson launches 5G RAN Slicing service, for 5G personal services... Ming-Chi Kuo confirmed the initial rumors, which indicated that Hyundai will be the Cupertino company's production partner, and it seems that the car will use the company's platform from South Korea, called E-GMP, announced by them a few months ago. According to 9to5 Mac, the E-GMP would have impressive specifications, with an autonomy of 482 kilometers and the ability to charge up to 80% in just 18 minutes. Also, a 5-minute charge would allow the car to travel another 100 kilometers. Hyundai also says that the maximum speed of the car would be 257 km/h, and it could reach 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds from the start. It is important to mention that these are the chassis numbers for the "high-performance" models, i.e. the top ones. The weight and aerodynamic performance of the chassis on a completed car is also currently unknown, so we can assume that these figures are achieved with a very light vehicle. E-GMP is built exclusively for fully electric vehicles, not hybrids. However, Ming-Chi Kuo notes that the development of the car will take several years: "Apple will launch the car in 2025 at the earliest. The new iPhone needs a process of about 18-24 months to get from the initial specifications to its mass production. Considering the longer development time, stricter requirements, more complicated production chain, and the big difference in car sales, I think that Apple, which has no experience in making cars, is already in a crisis of time if he wants to launch the car in 2025". here
  15. Not a few are laptop or desktop users who have dozens or hundreds of icons on their screen. Starting from that unpleasant situation, a series of scenarios were created related to how it affects system performance. Ever since my first Windows systems, it has been pointed out to me that a clean desktop translates into a faster PC. No one has really argued for the logic behind that statement, but for more than a decade, I haven't had any icons on my desktop, and it's possible that my decision to do so was influenced by that "advice" as well. There are many explanations for how a computer's performance is influenced by desktop icons, and I'll cite a few of them below, with a simple conclusion to remember. Systems with current hardware configurations are no longer influenced by the number of icons on the desktop, but those had quite an impact 15-20 years ago, when PCs were significantly slower. Although it would be ideal to move your desktop icons into a folder, to find them easier and enjoy "cleanliness", the speed of starting and closing the PC is not significantly influenced by their number, more rather not at all. In the boot process, the operating system loads desktop icons into RAM, but if most of them are shortcuts to programs installed on the computer, they are only a few KB, and a PC with 4GB or 8GB of RAM is immune to that unnecessary memory consumption. Even if you have many files on your desktop, such as PDFs, Word documents, pictures or movies, the operating system only loads the icon of those files, which is still a few Kb, compared to the few GB of RAM you have install on the system. On the other hand, you'd better never keep important documents on your desktop, because you risk losing them if your Windows PC decides to give up one day. The good part is that you won't be spoiled by the number of icons you have in the foreground. SOURCE: HERE
  16. After the launch of the OnePlus Nord CE 5G (review here), we are preparing for the Nord 2. Well, today we found out that the model will come with the Dimensity 1200-AI chipset. Until now, OnePlus has only used chipsets from Snapdragon, and this will be the first collaboration between the two companies. 17. Two people have been found dead amid the massive wildfire that has swept through northern California, forcing thousands to flee their homes: The bodies of the deceased pair were found inside a car in the driveway of a property caught in the fire. Siskiyou County Sheriff Jeremiah LaRue told ABC News that the two appeared to be trying to flee the area. The McKinney fire has burned more than 52,000 acres, the largest in California this year. The identities of the two deceased people are not being released until their families have been notified. California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency following the fire, which started Friday afternoon before quickly exploding due to a combination of dry fuel following a drought, high winds and lightning. About 650 firefighters are battling the blaze, officials say, but with little success. Sheriffs said Sunday night that it was "0% contained." As a result, more than 2,000 residents of the area around the Klamath National Forest are forced to evacuate their homes. Rescue teams helped hikers who were on the trails of the national park. The nearby town of Yreka - home to several thousand people - has not been evacuated and remains out of control of the fire. Vina Swenson, who has lived in Yreka for more than 20 years, told the Los Angeles Times that firefighters were cutting bushes, shrubs and grass near her home. "It's reassuring that they're keeping us safe, but the fact that they're clearing the brush here makes me think they're expecting the fire to get here," she said. "I just saw it explode" Harlene Althea Schwander, an artist, had moved into her new home near the fire's starting point only a month ago and still hadn't unpacked everything. "Three generations of beautiful things, all my paintings... all gone," she told Reuters. "When I saw it coming from the community center and I just saw it explode in the dark. I knew the house was gone," she said. "The firemen came and told me 'go now.' However, there was good news - Mrs. Schwander's daughter-in-law had taken her jewelry before they fled. Capt. Joseph Amador of the Mariposa County Fire Department told CBS News the conditions are "extreme," but firefighters are trained and ready to handle this year's wildfires. "We are ready for it," he added. Despite its large size, the McKinney fire is much smaller than last year's Dixie fire, which tore through hundreds of thousands of acres and became the second largest fire ever recorded in California. But the state sees frequent large fires during its months-long fire season. The Oak Fire, far to the south near Yosemite National Park, is still burning after more than a week - although it has now been brought under control and is not growing. Climate change increases the risk of hot, dry weather that is likely to fuel wildfires. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-62381418

According to the manufacturer, it is the lightest drone on the market capable of carrying video cameras.
  21. Windows 10 Pro with an invoice for 129.99 lei? Let me tell you about The Bachelor Windows 10 is by far the most po[CENSORED]r operating system ever released; whether it's because of the benefits it brings, or because of the various controversies created by problematic updates and other blunders made by Microsoft. But I think the most discussed topic related to the operating system is the price. At the moment, through stores such as eMag or PC Garage, you can buy an official license starting from 600 lei. And when the average user barely spends 300 lei on a game on the day of release, the possibility of paying that much money on the operating system falls below sea level. This has led to the po[CENSORED]rization of alternatives such as licenses bought on Ebay or G2A for 10 dollars: only they are in a gray area, where they are legal and illegal at the same time. In this article I want to talk about this topic and see how the Licenso people approached the whole situation. And since I brought them up, let's see who they are and what they do. What is License? Licenso is an online store new to the market, but with a long history behind it. The people who led to the birth of this project have participated in various partnerships with large stores in Europe and have some experience behind them. They currently operate locally, but hope to expand their business across the continent. The store sells Windows 10 OEM and Retail licenses through some of the largest distributors in Europe and tries to offer the best price every time. And here are the first differences between Licenso and stores like G2A. As the representatives of the store tell us on the dedicated page, the authenticity of the licenses sold by the store is checked every time, and the only license variant that we can buy from Licenso is the Retail type. Let's put things into context and see the difference between the types of Windows 10 licenses: 1. Retail: A RETAIL license is what you get when you buy a genuine copy of Windows 10 and it's yours alone. It means it doesn't have an expiration date and you won't lose it once you build a new PC, with the ability to transfer it once you've disabled your old device. 2. OEM: OEM licenses come with a new computer. They are not transferable and will only work with that computer. Of course, you can reinstall Windows 10 as many times as you want, but only on one device. This type of license is quite po[CENSORED]r and you can often purchase it from third party sites at very low prices. 3. Volumes: VOLUME licenses, as the name suggests, are created to cater to a large volume of users. Such a license can be extremely useful in a company, or in a school, where you have a large but controlled number of devices and you can buy a single license for all of them. And I think we can already see the first problem: Volume licenses can be sold as Retail licenses. This fact in itself is illegal, but nevertheless, many resellers sell such licenses to multiple buyers to maximize their profits. In the end, the user gets a cheap Windows 10 key and the seller makes a lot of money, but there's another variable. Microsoft also checks these licenses from time to time, and when it notices that one of them is activated on more devices than it should be, or that they are scattered all over the world, it deactivates it. Once this license is deactivated, all buyers will be unable to activate their copy of Windows 10 and lose the money they paid for the so-called Retail license. Licenso made sure that such situations would not arise by checking each individual license. If you buy a license through the store, their representatives can test the key you receive for free to make sure both you and them that there is no problem and that you have a copy of Windows 10 Retail. In addition, the store also offers an invoice for any order (either an individual or a legal entity), technical support and free consultation. Where are the licenses sold by Licenso purchased? – The licenses come from a partnership between the store in Romania and a large store in Germany. The store in Germany buys a very large volume of licenses, and some of them end up in the stock of Licenso who can sell them at a good price, being bought through a kind of "wholesale" system. What is the difference between Windows 10 licenses on Licenso and those on G2A? – On G2A and any other such reseller, you never have a guarantee for what you buy. If you are unlucky enough to buy a VOLUME license and it expires after some time, you are left with lost money and zero chance of getting it back. Do I get any warranty when I buy from Licenso? – Windows 10 Retail licenses never expire, so you don't get a warranty. But if something happens to your license, under the invoice you can contact the store's technical support to ask for a check. If something is wrong, they will replace your key at no extra cost. If I purchase multiple licenses for the company's PCs, are they legally OK in the event of an audit? – Licenses purchased through Licenso come with proof of purchase, so in case of a check you can present the invoice and proof that the license is Retail and everything is legal. And is it worth it? Although there are cheaper alternatives than Licenso, I don't think you get the license verification service for free with your bill anywhere else. The latter is by far the biggest asset of this seller, and when at 129.99 lei you know you're covered in case of anything, then I think the answer is logical. If you want to activate your copy of Windows 10 to unlock its full potential, or you just want to go all out with software legally, you have the best option in front of you. Of course, you can always buy from eBay and be lucky enough not to get your license suspended, but there's also a risk you're taking. In addition, Licenso also sells other types of licenses. In addition to the Microsoft operating system, you can also buy licenses for the Office suite and Adobe Creative Cloud. And if Windows Defender doesn't suit you, you can get your hands on a license of Bitdefender or another antivirus offered by the seller super quickly and cheaply.
  22. iPhones and pretty much all high-end phones these days are considered fragile devices, being made of glass on the front and back. But a plane pilot says his iPhone survived a 3,000-foot drop during the flight, and he managed to find it intact the next day. Of course, the phone had a durable case, but we wouldn't have expected it to protect it from such a high impact at a speed of around 320 km/h. The iPhone was in a protective case and survived an impact at 300 km/h The unfortunate event occurred on August 8, 2021, when "dmloftus" (diamondaviators forum username) was returning home to Atlanta on his Diamond DA40 personal jet from Colorado Springs. The DA40 model has a small window that can be opened during flight, useful for airing the cabin or cooling electronic equipment. However, if you get too close to the window with light objects, they can be pulled out by the current. Trying to take a photo, due to the turbulence, the phone came very close to that glass and fell into the void from 3,000m, and "dmloftus" says he wasn't too sorry, since it was an iPhone X from 4 years ago years. However, when he retrieved his SIM card and inserted it into an iPhone 6s, on the Find My iPhone map, the phone still showed up as online at 9.30pm last night, even though the phone had fallen out of a plane at 6pm :30. Out of curiosity, he says he went back to where the phone fell, flew to Arkansas, and then drove to the middle of a field in a soybean field. Unfortunately, the phone no longer responded to commands, as the battery ran out, but after an hour of searching in the 10-meter area offered by Find My iPhone, the phone was found, apparently without damage. The screen and glass panels were intact, and the phone turned on as soon as it was connected to a power source in the car. The case he used was a generic one from Otterbox, an accessory maker we've previously heard about for revealing designs of unreleased phones. This is a happy case though, as most phone users have had even minor accidents that have resulted in the glass breaking from an impact of only a few centimeters. Source
  23. California is to ban the sale of new petrol-only vehicles by 2035, marking a historic step in the state's attempts to tackle climate change. The new rules are aimed to force car makers to accelerate the introduction to the market of cleaner vehicles. It comes after Governor Gavin Newsom set a target in 2020 to speed up the shift away from fossil fuels. The move is important as California is the most populous state in the US and one of the world's biggest economies. Under the rules, issued by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), 35% of new vehicles sold in the state must be electric, hybrid or hydrogen-powered by 2026. The regulations would apply to 68% of vehicle sales by 2030, and 100% by 2035. CARB chair Laine Randolph said the move was "a historic moment for California, for our partner states and for the world as we set forth a path toward a zero emission future". The announcement is the latest move by California as it continues to move faster than the US federal government to tighten emission rules. With more than 39m residents, California is the biggest US state by po[CENSORED]tion. If it was a standalone country it would be the fifth-largest economy in the world by gross domestic product, putting it ahead of the United Kingdom. Joseph Mendelson, senior counsel at electric carmaker Tesla, said CARB's plan was "both achievable and paves the way for California to lead in electrifying the light duty sector". However, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation - which represents carmakers including General Motors, Volkswagen and Toyota - said more needed to be done to boost demand for electric vehicles (EVs). "What we've said to CARB and others is that getting more EVs on the road must go hand-in-hand with other policies that together will ultimately determine the success of this transition," the alliance's president and chief executive John Bozzella said. The new rules still have be approved by the US government before they can take effect. However, the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers trade association called on President Biden and the Environmental Protection Agency to "reject California's request for a Clean Air Act waiver to proceed with this unlawful ban." https://www.bbc.com/news/business-62683260
