Regardless of whatever other augmented reality hardware solutions Apple might have been working on, the company’s immediate path forward appears to be iPhone-dependent AR glasses with a handheld controller, rather than a standalone platform. That’s the biggest surprise developers Steve Troughton-Smith and Guilherme Rambo have discovered in newly released versions of iOS 13 and XCode 11, which now show clear evidence of a stereo augmented reality feature called StarBoard — a necessary software prelude to the release of compatible hardware. As of now, StarBoard looks similar to iOS’s CarPlay feature, which uses an iPhone to generate the graphics for a car’s external touch display. Unlike CarPlay, which outputs a single image for the 2D dashboard display, StarBoard appears to be focused on outputting two images for a 3D stereoscopic headset, which would be paired with a new touch-based controller for AR navigation. Code suggests that your hand will grasp something akin to a Siri Remote or Oculus Go controller, combining a touch surface and motion controls with a trigger and a Home button. While it appears that Apple will have developers create objects and environments within its existing ARKit software environment, there are references in Apple’s code to Holokit, Garta, Franc, and Luck, which appear to be new AR software and hardware currently undergoing internal testing at the company. Troughton-Smith speculates that Apple might be priming a third-party accessory program to bring compatible glasses into the marketplace with its own offering as a “halo” product. Priced at $500, Nreal Light occupies a 52-degree field of view with a bright, colorful 1080p resolution display that appears to make digital objects float plausibly in your field of view. Twin cameras and SLAM technology help an inside-out tracking system display the objects within real-world spaces, correctly adjusting their position and perspective as you move around them. Further advancements in graphics chips and display resolution will soon enable rendering of even more complex objects, likely approaching photorealism. Two big challenges for Apple will be offering the accessory with both a form factor and a price that will resonate with consumers, rather than just enterprise users. Microsoft and Magic Leap have both released multi-thousand-dollar AR headsets that demand significant computing power, which Microsoft anchors on your head and Magic Leap tethers to your waist, using a cable, like Nreal Light. For numerous reasons, neither platform has taken off with mainstream audiences. It remains to be seen whether Apple will be able to stream data wirelessly to the headset while offering enough battery power to make it usable for hours at a time. New iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models notably include both Wi-Fi 6 and an ultra-wideband wireless chip called U1, which could enable the company to steer fairly high-bandwidth wireless transmissions from iPhone to headset rather than relying on a cable. Software will also be an issue, though a decision to rely on iPhones as the initial foundation for an AR headset could be canny. Apple could rely on developers to code iOS apps that will initially depend on iPhones, then spin off into apps that run directly on a more powerful future headset or over 5G from cloud servers. The company was originally said to be working on a custom variant of iOS called “rOS” for its wearable AR devices, which could emerge in the future as 5-nanometer chip manufacturing shrinks its A- or S-series processors down to glasses frame sizes. Apple’s reveal timing for its headset remains unclear. A report earlier this year suggested that it had killed the headset project, while another claimed that it was mobilizing internal resources to finalize the project — possibly a sign that a more ambitious standalone device was shelved in favor of a more practical and shippable tethered one.

Fortnite fans perusing Twitch for their favorite streamers to watch have been running into an issue for the past couple of weeks: almost all of the biggest names in the community are playing a different game. It’s not a battle royale title or even a competitive multiplayer game; it’s a largely cooperative fantasy RPG that came out 15 years ago. Maybe you’ve heard the name before: World of Warcraft, the Blizzard-produced massively multiplayer online game that was released in its classic, preexpansion form on August 26th but was originally released in November 2004. According to streaming production provider StreamElements, viewership of World of Warcraft on Twitch jumped 83 percent in August alone, thanks largely to WoW Classic and streamer Asmongold, who unseated Fortnite star Turner “Tfue” Tenney as the most-streamed channel on Twitch last month. The game didn’t top Fortnite for most hours watched in the month, but it did come in fourth behind Fortnite, League of Legends, and Dota 2. That’s not bad for a 15-year-old game. Asmongold, who’s been streaming WoW for years to largely little fanfare and is typically known in a professional capacity only by the name Zack, is now far and away the most po[CENSORED]r streamer on Twitch, typically amassing around 75,000 concurrent viewers since Classic’s release and occasionally breaking into the triple digits. He currently leads Twitch as of this writing, while WoW is besting Fortnite, League of Legends, Counter-Strike: GO, Minecraft, and Grand Theft Auto V in total viewers.

EA’s working on a cloud gaming service Electronic Arts this week launched a closed beta of its upcoming cloud gaming service — and given how many similar services have been announced, it’ll take some pretty spectacular games for it to distinguish itself. The so-called Project Atlas first announced last October as, “A platform designed from the core to harness the massive power of cloud computing and artificial intelligence and putting it into the hands of game makers in a powerful, easy to use, one-stop experience.” According to a Medium post by EA CTO Ken Moss, EA is running a technical test to see how crossplay will work between games on different platforms. It will also see how each game performs when streaming on different devices. Testers will be able to play four games using Atlas: FIFA 19, Titanfall 2, Need for Speed Rivals, and Unravel. It’s not even to the point of being a beta test — this is quite early stuff, but critical to the platform’s success. Given how many other cloud gaming services have been announced lately — Xbox is working on its Project xCloud, Ubisoft is pushing Uplay+, and of course Google’s going all-in on Stadia — you’d be forgiven for having forgotten about Project Atlas. But it’s yet another example of a game company attempting to sell gamers on the thrill of playing a particular set of games on their myriad devices. EA will have to do quite a bit to set itself apart. With the exception of Stadia Base, which is free, each of the streaming services will cost something — and those charges are piling up. Given my choice, I’d rather use what little scratch I have to go with a more general service like Project xCloud. As for why everyone’s eager to get their own version of this out there, Moss touches on this in the Medium post, where he says: “The bottom line is this. Cloud gaming is coming. It’s no longer a question of if, but when.” This pretty clearly demonstrates that Moss, like many of his gaming industry compatriots, sees the junking of traditional console development as the future. Whether that’s because this is because it benefits gamers or because it benefits the game publishers themselves, that’s less clear. I would need to see how each of these services — Project Atlas included — performs in order to see how good a deal gamers are actually getting.   7. One of the major concerns when you buy an Android device is the frequency of updates you’ll receive over the years.. Google has been trying to solve that problem by pushing more fixes through the Google Play services, and initiatives like Project Treble and Project Mainline. Still, a lot of onus falls on phone makers to push frequent OS and security updates. A new report from the research firm Counterpoint shows how different manufacturers have pushed updates in the past year (Q3 2018 – Q2 2019). It notes that Nokia leads the race for pushing updates, with 96 percent of the phones it’s shipped in the past year running Android Pie 9.0. The Korean giant Samsung is in the second spot with 89 percent of its devices running the latest Android version. Top phone companies such as Xiaomi and Huawei have more than 80 percent devices running Android 9.o Pie. However, other leading firms such as Lenovo, Oppo, and Vivo have disappointing numbers with more than 50 percent of their devices still running Android 8.1 Oreo or older. The report also notes that Nokia updated almost 50 percent of its phones shipped in the last year to the latest Android version in six months. However, even after 12 months of Android Pie’s release, no other company apart from Xiaomi and Lenovo has updated more than half of its portfolio of phones to the latest version. This suggests that companies often release updates for their high-priced devices. But, their mid-range and budget devices might not get the love of the latest Android version. Counterpoint’s research director, Peter Richardson, said Android phone makers aren’t talking about the importance of updates enough, that’s why even customer awareness is low: Looking at the report, Nokia has done a fantastic job of keeping their phones updated and secure. However, many brands need to pay much more attention to pushing the latest software and security updates to their phones across different price ranges.
