Learn more Bungie will ban Destiny 2 players trying to bypass Steam Deck incompatibility By Jacob Ridley published 6 days ago Any system using Steam Play's Proton compatibility layer is incompatible with Destiny 2, Bungie says. Steam Deck with battery life remaining overlay on the screen Destiny 2 is not supported on the Steam Deck and anyone trying to bypass the rules will be met with a swift game ban, developer Bungie has said. Eep. According to help and troubleshooting information on the Bungie website, "Destiny 2 is not supported for play on the Steam Deck or on any system utilizing Steam Play's Proton unless Windows is installed and running. "Players who attempt to launch Destiny 2 on the Steam Deck through SteamOS or Proton will be unable to enter the game and will be returned to their game library after a short time." Proton is Valve's Linux compatibility layer, which is the key to running games programmed for Windows PCs on a Linux-powered machine, such as the Steam Deck. It's also available to use on other Linux machines, as is the open nature of Linux. However, that open nature of Linux might also be the reason for Destiny 2's lack of support. Some users have already taken to the DestinyTheGame subreddit to discuss the decision, including one user who explains in great depth why Bungie is in the right here. Essentially their argument boils down to Linux's lack of secure boot and user-configurable kernels, or at least the Steam Deck's lack thereof in this regard, which could leave Destiny 2's multiplayer open to cheaters. OS Secure Boot can attest with crypto signatures that it's all running to Steam's specifications and that you, the user, have no rights to install unauthenticated kernel-level drivers or interfere with other programs," user floatingatoll says. "I would not trust anti-cheat systems on Linux, because Linux has no mechanism to be booted in a mode that cannot be modified by the user." We don't really know the exact reason for Bungie's lack of Steam Deck support, but it's almost certainly down to ensuring its anti-cheat software is still able to effectively keep its online multiplayer free of cheaters. That's along the same line the argument that Fortnite developer Epic made when it decided not to update Fortnite to run on the Steam Deck. Speaking to The Verge, company CEO Tim Sweeney said, " “Linux is a small market already and if you subdivide it by blessed kernel versions then it’s even smaller.” Paired with the ability to run custom kernels that could bypass client-side anti-cheat, it became too great a risk for Epic's incredibly po[CENSORED]r battle royale. "We don’t have confidence that we’d be able to combat cheating at scale under a wide array of kernel configurations including custom ones," Sweeney said. And now Bungie joins them in shunning the Steam Deck's native Linux OS. That said, Apex Legends recently added support for the Steam Deck and its compatibility layer, and there are ways to get anti-cheat software operational in Linux, even Epic's own Easy Anti-Cheat. Thus it's likely to come down to each game, developer, and their own integration of anti-cheat as to whether the Steam Deck, and the wider Linux ecosystem, is supported or not. There will soon be the ability to install Windows on the Steam Deck should you so wish, offering another option for Steam Deck guardians. Once the necessary drivers drop for the Steam Deck to make this possible, users will be able to run all of these games as if they were on any other gaming PC, only one that's smaller and handheld. There's also the option of playing via streaming services, such as GeForce Now. We've had a great deal of success using the Steam Deck as a nifty little streaming device, so that's definitely a good way to go.

  13. https://edition.cnn.com/2022/03/07/politics/navy-seals-supreme-court/index.html The Biden administration filed an emergency application with the Supreme Court on Monday, asking it to freeze a lower-court opinion requiring the Navy to deploy special operations forces even though they have refused to get vaccinated for Covid-19. "This application seeks relief from a preliminary injunction that usurps the Navy's authority to decide which servicemembers should be deployed to execute some of the military's most sensitive and dangerous missions," Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar told the justices in the administration's application on Monday. She is not challenging a portion of the injunction that protected the SEALs and other personnel from discipline or discharge for remaining unvaccinated. But she is asking that the ruling forcing the Navy to assign and deploy 35 unvaccinated members of special operations forces be blocked while the appeals process plays out. The challengers -- including more than two dozen Navy SEALs -- say they have religious objections to the requirement and are seeking an exemption. A district court ruled against the administration, and a federal appeals court declined to step in, saying that it had not demonstrated "paramount interests" that justify vaccinating the plaintiffs in violation of their religious beliefs. Lawyers for the First Liberty Institute are representing the challengers and said in a statement on Monday that the lower courts "got it right." The U.S. Supreme Court should reject this latest attempt to punish our clients and make clear, once and for all, that our service members do not forfeit their religious freedom because they are in the military," said Mike Berry, senior counsel for First Liberty. Prelogar told the justices that the Navy has informed her that it has already been forced to send one of the challengers to Hawaii for duty on a submarine "against its military judgment." Prelogar stressed that SEALs and other members of the Special Warfare community can be called upon to deploy anywhere in the world on short notice to complete high-risk missions under extreme conditions. She noted that in 2009 a team of SEALs flew 8,000 miles to respond to the hijacking of a US-flagged ship by Somali pirates and ultimately played a critical role in rescuing the ship's captain, who was being held hostage. "The Navy has an extraordinarily compelling interest in ensuring that the servicemembers who perform those missions are as physically and medically prepared as possible," she said, adding: "That includes vaccinating them against COVID-19, which is the least restrictive means of achieving that interest." She said that the US military has relied on mandatory immunization since 1777 when George Washington directed the inoculation of the Continental Army against smallpox. The Navy currently requires nine vaccines. It allows two types of exemptions for medical and administrative reasons, which include "religious accommodations." Those exemptions are adjudicated through Navy policies which include a 50-step process to entertain a religious accommodation request. In the seven months since the Covid vaccine was added as a mandatory immunization, the Navy has received more than 4,000 requests for exemptions. Most remain pending, and Prelogar says the Navy has only granted one religious accommodation. Under longstanding policy, Special Warfare servicemembers who cannot be vaccinated for religious reasons are deemed not physically qualified and cannot be assigned to an operation unit. Prelogar said if the Supreme Court were to freeze the lower court opinion, that they would not be entitled to be assigned to or deployed on missions that "their commanding officers have determined would be jeopardized by their lack of vaccination."
  14. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-humber-60508631 Huntsman spider found in Hull IMAGE SOURCE,RSPCA Image caption, RSPCA inspector Beth Boyd captured the juvenile spider by coaxing it into a lunch box An RSPCA officer has described how she captured a venomous spider in a plastic lunch box after it was discovered in a shipping container. The Huntsman spider, which had travelled 5,000 miles from China, was found by staff at a logistics firm in Hull on Friday. Inspector Beth Boyd said they had apparently refused to go back in the yard until the spider was dealt with. "When I got there they were all waiting for me to remove him," she said. Describing the incident, the RSPCA officer said: "It's probably one of the most unusual jobs I've done - I've not been called out to collect a spider before." However, she added: "In truth, he didn't put up a fight." 'Warm up' Ms Boyd said she had sought advice from a specialist rescue centre in Yorkshire, who told her the spider was a juvenile as it was "half the size they grow to on average". "He was quite docile and he wasn't moving around, probably because it was so cold," she said, adding that she had placed the lunch box she had to hand against the container wall and encouraged the spider into it "When he was settled I put it in the footwell of my van, so he could warm up," she said. The spider - named Rolf by the RSPCA - is now in the care of the Yorkshire rescue centre. Huntsman spiders are found in warm, temperate and tropical regions, including Asia and Australia. They are known for their speed and are considered to be the world's largest spider by leg span, which can reach around 11 inches (28cm) when fully grown. More news from across the region Despite possessing venom, they are reluctant to bite and are not considered dangerous. However, the RSPCA said it would always advise caution around them.

First debuting at the 2019 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in concept form before entering production in 2020, the R18 is an unmistakably heritage-inspired model that’s powered by the largest boxer twin BMW Motorrad has ever produced at just over 1.8 liters. Drawing visual inspiration from earlier iconic Beemers such as the R5 and R60, the R18 is draped in genuine metal bodywork, and sports modern versions of a classic bobber saddle, fishtail exhausts, and a teardrop-style tank. Like BMW’s earlier heritage-themed model, the R nineT, the R18 was engineered to be modular and to lend itself to customization, and as such BMW offers a large array of bolt-on parts and accessories to make the R18 your own.
  16. Written by Roni Caryn Rabin Few of COVID-19’s peculiarities have piqued as much interest as anosmia, the abrupt loss of smell that has become a well-known hallmark of the disease. COVID patients lose this sense even without a stuffy nose; the loss can make food taste like cardboard and coffee smell noxious, occasionally persisting after other symptoms have resolved. Scientists are now beginning to unravel the biological mechanisms, which have been something of a mystery: The neurons that detect odors lack the receptors that the coronavirus uses to enter cells, prompting a long debate about whether they can be infected at all. Insights gleaned from new research could shed new light on how the coronavirus might affect other types of brain cells, leading to conditions like “brain fog,” and possibly help explain the biological mechanisms behind long COVID — symptoms that linger for weeks or months after the initial infection. The new work, along with earlier studies, settles the debate over whether the coronavirus infects the nerve cells that detect odors: It does not. But the virus does attack other supporting cells that line the nasal cavity, the researchers found. The infected cells shed virus and die, while immune cells flood the region to fight the virus. The subsequent inflammation wreaks havoc on smell receptors, proteins on the surface of the nerve cells in the nose that detect and transmit information about odors. The process alters the sophisticated organization of genes in those neurons, essentially short-circuiting them, the researchers reported. Their paper significantly advances the understanding of how cells critical to the sense of smell are affected by the virus, despite the fact that they are not directly infected, said Dr Sandeep Robert Datta, an associate professor of neurobiology at Harvard Medical School, who was not involved in the study. “It’s clear that indirectly, if you affect the support cells in the nose, lots of bad things happen,” Datta said. “The inflammation in the adjacent cells triggers changes in the sensory neurons that prevent them from working properly.” Indeed, many complications of COVID appear to be caused by the immune system’s friendly fire as it responds to infection by flooding the bloodstream with inflammatory proteins called cytokines, which can damage tissue and organs. “This might be a general principle: that a lot of what the virus is doing to us is a consequence of its ability to generate inflammation,” Datta said. The new study is based on research carried out at Zuckerman Institute and Irving Medical Center at Columbia University in New York; the New York University Grossman School of Medicine; the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York; Baylor Genetics in Houston; and the School of Medicine at the University of California, Davis. The research was published online in Cell in early February. The scientists examined golden hamsters and human tissue specimens from 23 patients who succumbed to COVID. After the hamsters were infected with the original coronavirus, scientists tracked the damage to their olfactory systems over time. (How do you know a golden hamster has lost its sense of smell? You don’t feed it for several hours and then bury Cocoa Puffs in its bedding, said Benjamin tenOever, a professor of microbiology at NYU Langone Health and an author of the new research. Hamsters that can smell will find the cereal in seconds.) The virus did not invade neurons, the researchers learned, only the cells that play supporting roles in the olfactory system. But that was enough to alter the function of the nearby neurons, leading to a loss of smell. The immune response altered the architecture of genes in the neurons, disrupting production of odor receptors, said Marianna Zazhytska, a postdoctoral fellow at the Zuckerman Institute and one of the paper’s first authors, along with a graduate student, Albana Kodra. “It is not the virus itself causing all this reorganization — it’s the systemic inflammatory response,” Zazhytska said. “The nerve cells are not hosting the virus, but they are not doing what they did before.” The ability of the olfactory receptors to send and receive messages is disrupted. But the neurons don’t die, and so the system can recover after the illness resolves. ALSO READ |Some dos and don’ts to follow for a healthy gut Earlier work at the Zuckerman Institute showed that neurons that detect smells have complex genomic organizational structures that are essential to the creation of odor receptors, and the receptor genes communicate among themselves very intensively, said Stavros Lomvardas, one of the paper’s corresponding authors. “We saw early on that upon infection, the genomic organization of these neurons changes completely — they’re unrecognizable compared to how they normally are,” Lomvardas said. “There is a signal released from the infected cells that is received by the neurons that normally detect odors, and tells them to reorganize and stop expression of olfactory receptor genes,” he said. He suggested this may represent an evolutionary adaptation that offers a form of antiviral resistance and whose main purpose may be to prevent the virus from entering the brain. “That was a relief for us,” he said. “That was one piece of good news.”
  17. https://edition.cnn.com/2022/03/07/europe/russia-southern-ukraine-military-analysis-intl/index.html Each morning I hope it will be easier to process. But nearly a fortnight into this war, the conflict still seems surreally distant and alarmingly beyond comprehension. Try to ask yourself "how is this happening?" and you lurch out over an abyss so profound it is beyond the reach of your senses. And even if Putin does think he can get his old empire back, how do these 13 days of savagery make that happen? The slow and clumsy Russian campaign for the south has been the most baffling. It is clear what Moscow wants: To cut off Ukraine's access to the Black Sea. What is hard to fathom is whether the Kremlin's plan to get it has collapsed, and Russian troops are just throwing rockets and tanks at anything they can, or whether this sort of total war against Ukrainians was always the plan.

  21. ArtesianBuilds is a PC building livestream which specialises in high-end, modified gaming PC builds. After recently announcing smalltime affiliate streamer Kiapiaa as the winner of a PC giveaway, ArtesianBuilds CEO Noah Katz seemed to suddenly make a U-turn on the giveaway's criteria, and flat out refused to reward Kiapiaa their rightful winnings. Intel, who sponsored the giveaway and has its logo plastered all over the stream has since stepped in, and an official apology has been made by the ArtisianBuilds channel. Here's how the whole thing played out: Kiapiaa called out the comments in a response thread on her Twitter account. The thread highlights the moments in which she felt hurt and defamed, and asks for clarification as to the real issue, since the giveaway criteria appeared to have been changed on the fly. All followers combined, still under 5k. Even across multiple socials," the presenter notes as he combs through Kiapiaa's social media profiles. "I was trying to be generous." He then goes on to explain that "This person has three months of ambassadorship, and not a single click," which is reportedly why they were getting "purged." It's the tone of "Not a single click, not even once," that gets me. As many of the comments stress, Katz's tone of voice is super dismissive. And all this over something the streamer really had no control. The decision to withhold the prize, then, was made on the basis that the affiliate streamers following was not big enough to have landed any clicks on the affiliate link she'd had on her Twitch for around three months. Oddly, this is a requirement that doesn't appear to have been previously laid out in the terms of the giveaway. Kiapiaa isn't the only one turned down as a contest winner on these terms, as is clear from this clip of Katz trying to find a "person who is validated by our metrics." Since this all kicked off, Intel has stepped in with an official statement of disagreement. "We strive towards welcoming streamers of all sizes to our programs and do not agree with recent negative comments directed toward small streamers. We are reaching out to relevant parties to address the situation." Afterwards, Katz made a written apology posted on the ArtesianBuilds Twitter, along with a personal video apology.

  23. In this week's episode of the Coin Concede podcast, Hearthstone game director Ben Lee announced he is leaving the team to work on a different, unannounced project within Blizzard. Lee also outlined a host of changes players can expect to see from Hearthstone in 2022. Lee has been Hearthstone's game director since the end of 2018, during which time he has overseen a slew of major changes to the long-running CCG, including the implementation of Hearthstone's "Rewards Track" season pass system. While initially met with fury over perceived reductions in player rewards, following some tweaking the Rewards Track is now a broadly-accepted part of Hearthstone Lee's tenure as director also included the introduction of the Demon Hunter class, and his time leading the team was characterized by a more regular pace of balance updates and increased responsiveness to player feedback. Less successfully, following its troubled announcement, the Mercenaries mode has widely been deemed a whiff. On the business side, new forms of monetization have also ramped up substantially, with cosmetics being added to the main modes—Standard and Battlegrounds—at a bewildering rate While not certain, many in the Hearthstone community believe that Lee has joined the same unannounced project as fellow Hearthstone vets Mike Donais and Peter Whalen. Given these developers' expertise, it would be reasonable to assume that this upcoming game will offer hybrid CCG-RPG gameplay akin to Hearthstone. Hearthstone content creator, RegisKillbin, speculates that it may even be a CCG-roguelike, a Blizzard take on Slay the Spir As an aside, Blizzard has a different 'unannounced' game in the works, except that it actually has been announced: The studio is working on a survival game currently only known as "Unannounced Survival Game." Those working on the survival project have identified themselves, though, so if Lee were making a leap to a new genre, he probably would've just said so The interview also contained quite a few tidbits about Hearthstone's past and future, including the tantalizing reveal that this year's expansion was almost cooking show-themed. That didn't happen, but Lee did mention that Hearthstone will receive multiple new card types in the coming year, stating: "One of the most exciting things about the coming, unnamed year, is that there's actually a bunch of new card types that we've been experimenting with that are really interesting and fun. Unsurprisingly, he didn't offer any detail beyond that, but Lee did expand a bit on the team's thinking: "We wanted to try some really interesting stuff to push Standard in a little bit of a different direction with some new interesting takes on card types, so hopefully players enjoy those and we look forward to hearing what they think Until now, Hearthstone has only had four card types, with the newest, heroes, having been introduced all the way back in 2017. The introduction of multiple new types in the same year would likely have a substantial effect on the way the game is played Despite its age, Lee also noted that Hearthstone continues to maintain a huge player base and makes more money than many AAA games, despite a backdrop of serious and shocking allegations concerning endemic workplace harassment at Blizzard that surfaced last year . . ."" ...e.. .
