https://edition.cnn.com/2021/12/20/politics/joe-biden-build-back-better-setback-explained/index.html No more monthly payments for tens of millions of families. No universal pre-kindergarten for 3- and 4-year-olds. No health insurance for more than 2 million low-income Americans. No funneling of billions of dollars into clean energy initiatives. The end of negotiations between President Joe Biden and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia means that these and a multitude of other provisions to strengthen the nation's safety net won't happen -- at least not soon. The fate of the Democrats' $1.75 trillion spending plan is now uncertain. Manchin announced on Sunday that he would not support the current version of the legislation, halting its path through the Senate since the party needs the support of all 50 of its members to approve the package through the budget reconciliation process. It passed the House last month. Manchin has repeatedly voiced concerns about the size of the proposal, which he called a "mammoth piece of legislation" on Sunday. He has objected to the enhanced child tax credit, paid family leave and climate provisions, along with several tax measures. Plus, he said the package could add to the nation's rising debt and worsen inflation, which is already soaring. A majority of the legislation would be paid for with new tax increases on corporations and the wealthy. But even with those revenue raisers, the Congressional Budget Office estimated it would add $367 billion to the deficit over 10 years. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Monday vowed that the chamber would "vote on a revised version of the House-passed Build Back Better and we will keep voting on it until we get something done." What that package ultimately looks like remains to be seen. Here are the proposed safety net programs that are now at risk of being dropped: Enhanced child tax credit: The current version of Build Back Better would have continued the enhanced child tax credit monthly payments through 2022. Instead, the December installment of up to $300 per child that was sent to more than 36 million families may be the last one. The boost, part of the American Rescue Plan that Biden signed in March, is only in effect for 2021. This expensive provision has been one of Manchin's main concerns. Extending the beefed-up credit for a year -- and making it fully refundable permanently -- would cost about $185 billion, according to CBO. the American Rescue Plan that Biden signed in March, is only in effect for 2021. This expensive provision has been one of Manchin's main concerns. Extending the beefed-up credit for a year -- and making it fully refundable permanently -- would cost about $185 billion, according to CBO. But Manchin is concerned that the enhanced payments would be extended again because they'd be too po[CENSORED]r to ax. Making the provision permanent would cost $1.6 trillion over 10 years, CBO estimated. Eligible parents have received up to $300 for each child up to age 6 and $250 for each one ages 6 through 17 on a monthly basis since July, which accounts for half of the enhanced credit. Families will receive the other half when they submit their 2021 tax return next season. In total, the expanded credit provides up to $3,600 for each younger child and up to $3,000 for each older one. Also, more low-income parents became eligible for the full credit because the American Rescue Plan made it fully refundable for a year. It had been only partially refundable -- leaving more than 26 million children unable to get the entire credit because their families' incomes were too low, according to Treasury Department estimates. The enhancement has been key to the Democrats' promise to reduce child poverty. The November payment kept 3.8 million kids from poverty and slashed the child poverty rate by nearly 30%, according to the Center on Poverty and Social Policy at Columbia University. Medicaid coverage gap: Build Back Better's current version would have provided a pathway to health insurance for more than 2 million low-income Americans in the 12 states that have not expanded Medicaid. It would have enabled them to receive Affordable Care Act subsidies to buy Obamacare policies with no monthly premiums through 2025. Doing so would have cost about $57 billion, the CBO estimates. And the bill would have required state Medicaid programs to provide 12 months of eligibility to women after they give birth. States now typically provide 60 days of coverage. Child care: The legislation would have limited child care costs for families with children younger than age 6 to no more than 7% of income for those earning up to 250% of state median income, expanding access to about 20 million children. Funding would have lasted six years. The provision, along with the universal pre-K measure, would have cost an estimated $381 billion, according to CBO. Universal pre-K: The bill would have provided free pre-K for 3- and 4-year-olds, expanding access to 6 million children a year. Funding would have lasted six years. The provision, along with the child care measure, would have cost an estimated $381.5 billion, according to the CBO. Affordable Care Act subsidies: Americans may only receive enhanced Obamacare federal premium subsidies for another year if Build Back Better is never enacted. The boost, which is prompting record numbers of Americans to sign up for coverage on the exchanges, is currently scheduled to end after 2022. The Democrats' spending plan would have extended it through 2025 at a cost of $74 billion, according to CBO. The number of uninsured Americans would have dropped by 3.4 million, mainly due to the subsidies extension and the Medicaid provision, CBO estimates. The legislation also would have added a year to the American Rescue Plan provision that allows those receiving unemployment benefits to qualify for federal subsidies that reduce their monthly premiums to as little as $0. It was only in effect for 2021. Medicare hearing benefits: Senior citizens and Americans with disabilities would have received hearing coverage through Medicare, starting in 2023, under the current version of Build Back Better. Only 30% of seniors over age 70 who could benefit from hearing aids have ever used them, the White House said. This measure would have cost $36.7 billion, according to CBO. Children's nutrition: The current bill would have expanded free school meals to nearly 9 million children during the school year and provided the parents of 29 million kids a $65 per child per month benefit to purchase food during the summer. Earned income tax credit: The expanded earned income tax credit would have been extended through 2022, helping 17 million low-wage childless workers, under the current version of Build Back Better. The boost, which is also part of the American Rescue Plan, is only in place for this year. It nearly triples the maximum credit childless workers can receive, extends eligibility to more people, reduces the minimum age and eliminates the upper age limit. This provision costs about $13 billion, according to CBO. Home health care: Build Back Better called for permanently improving Medicaid coverage for home care services for seniors and people with disabilities, with the goal of reducing the more than 800,000 people on state Medicaid waiting lists. It also aimed to improve the quality of caregiving jobs. The measure would have cost nearly $146 billion, according to CBO. Drug price reduction efforts: Build Back Better contained multiple efforts to lower the price of prescription medication -- most notably allowing Medicare to negotiate prices for the first time. The bill would have empowered Medicare to negotiate prices of certain costly medications administered in doctors' offices or purchased at the pharmacy. The Health and Human Services secretary would negotiate up to 10 drugs in 2025 and up to 20 medications starting in 2028. The legislation also would have imposed penalties if drug companies increased their prices faster than inflation. And it would have redesigned Medicare's Part D drug plans so that seniors and people with disabilities wouldn't have had to pay more than $2,000 for medications bought at the pharmacy. The bill would also have capped what Americans pay for insulin at $35 a month. And it would blocked the implementation of a Trump administration regulation that would change the drug industry's rebate system, though it isn't set to go into effect until 2026. The rule effectively bans drug makers from providing rebates to pharmacy benefit managers and insurers. Instead, drug companies are encouraged to pass the discounts directly to patients at the pharmacy counter. Altogether, these measures would have saved around $297 billion, including about $79 billion from allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices, according to CBO. Paid family and sick leave: The bill would have provided four weeks of paid leave for new parents as well as workers recovering from illness or caring for sick family members. It would have cost an estimated $205.5 billion, according to the CBO. The United States currently has no federal paid family or sick leave benefit, making it an outlier among developed countries. Pell grants: Build Back Better would have increased the maximum Pell grant by $550 for more than 5 million students enrolled in public and private nonprofit colleges and expand access to undocumented students brought to the US as children, who are known as Dreamers. It would have invested in historically Black colleges and universities and other institutions that serve underrepresented communities, as well as increased funding for workforce development. These provisions would have cost a total of $39.8 billion, according to the CBO's estimate. Affordable housing: The legislation called for a $25 billion investment in the construction, rehabilitation or purchase of affordable homes for low-income people and for the creation and preservation of affordable rental housing. It would have provided $65 billion to address the capital needs backlog of public housing and would bolster rental assistance to hundreds of thousands of families. The measure would have also invested in down payment assistance and in community-led redevelopment projects in under-resourced neighborhoods. And it would have provided $24 billion to fund housing vouchers and supportive services.

As such, the Streetfighter V4 not only gets a 1,103cc V4 engine that generates well-over 200hp, but also an advanced suite of electronic rider assists, down-force-generating winglets, a TFT display, top-of-the-line running gear, and one of the meanest-looking two-wheeled designs in recent history. It admittedly doesn’t come cheap, though the Streetfighter V4 genuinely does offer world-class performance capabilities, with top speeds of over 200mph. Ducati also sells the Ohlins-equipped S-spec for an extra couple grand over the already-incredibly-capable base model.

https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/why-do-women-sprout-chin-hairs-as-they-age-7681581/lite/ If you’re a woman who is growing new chin hairs, the first thing you should know is that most of the time, “this is perfectly normal,” said Dr. Joel L. Cohen, a dermatologist and director of AboutSkin Dermatology and DermSurgery in Denver. As women get closer to menopause, he said, the balance of hormones in their bodies shifts, and they can start producing more male-type hormones known as androgens. Androgens, Cohen said, can transform the kinds of hair follicles that women typically have on their faces — ones that produce short, thin, light hair known as peach fuzz — into follicles that make thicker, darker hai As for why some women sprout these hairs and others don’t, that’s often down to genetics, said Dr. Angela Lamb, a board-certified dermatologist at Mount Sinai in New York City. If you’re growing unwanted hair and your mother, sister or grandmother did too, that’s a sign that this kind of hair growth runs in the There are many safe ways to remove unwanted facial hair, including tweezing, waxing, threading, shaving and using depilatory creams. If you’re worried that any of those techniques will cause your hair to grow back thicker, you can relax on that front. “It’s a myth,” Lamb said. In fact, the opposite can even happen: Waxing, tweezing or threading can reduce hair growth, because some hair follicles get damaged by the removal process and stop producing hair, she said. ALSO READ |Laser hair removal: Here’s what you need to keep in mind Another way to control unwanted hair growth is to use a prescription cream called Vaniqa, which makes hair grow more slowly, finely and possibly lighter in color when applied twice a day. But the cream only works for as long as it’s used; once you stop applying it, hair will grow back the way it grew before, Lamb said. If you want to eliminate chin hairs permanently, you might consider laser hair removal or electrolysis, Lamb said, which both work by damaging the hair follicle so it stops producing hair. When unusual hair growth is cause for concern If you’re noticing more hair growth than usual, and it’s appearing not just on your face but also on your chest, lower abdomen, inner thighs or back, you may want to see a doctor. This type of excessive hair growth, called hirsutism, can be caused by genetics or as a side effect of certain medications. In many cases, it’s nothing to worry about. But hirsutism can also be a symptom of another medical condition that requires treatment, Lamb said. One condition that can cause hirsutism is polycystic ovary syndrome, so called because small cysts grow in the ovaries. The cysts lead to increased androgen production, promoting hair growth, Cohen explained, resulting in coarser, darker hair. Other symptoms of PCOS include period irregularities, weight gain and acne. It’s important for women with PCOS symptoms to see a doctor, Lamb said, because when untreated, it can lead to infertility. Typically, PCOS is treated with lifestyle changes and medications, which could include birth control, progestin therapy or the anti-diabetic medication metformin. Long-term use of corticosteroids, which are used to treat some autoimmune conditions as well as asthma, can also lead to changes in hair growth patterns, including excessive growth, Cohen said. That’s because they, too, stimulate androgen production in the body. Usually, though, sprouting extra hair is nothing to worry about, and it’s common. “People ask me about it all the time,” Lamb said.

https://edition.cnn.com/ Former President Donald Trump was booed by a portion of an audience in Dallas on Sunday when he said he had received a Covid-19 booster shot, according to video of the closed press event that was shared on social media. The comments by Trump -- who, despite championing his administration's efforts to develop Covid vaccines, rarely discusses his own vaccination and has largely declined to encourage others to get it -- came during a stop of his tour with former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly. According to video tweeted by O'Reilly's "No Spin News," the former Fox News host says, "Both the President and I are vaxxed" and then asks Trump, "Did you get the booster?" "Yes," Trump says to a smattering of boos in the audience. "Don't, don't, don't, don't, don't," Trump says in the video, seemingly trying to quiet the boos. "That's all right, it's a very tiny group over there." CNN has reached out to a Trump spokesperson for more details on the former President's decision to get the booster shot. In a longer video later tweeted by O'Reilly's site, Trump warns supporters that they are "playing right into their hands" when they dismiss the vaccines and don't take credit for them. "Look, we did something that was historic, we saved tens of millions of lives worldwide. We, together, all of us, not me," Trump says in the video, which comes right before Trump receives the smattering of boos. He goes on to say that Covid-19 was going to "ravage the country far beyond what it is right now" if the vaccines had not been developed. "Take credit for it. Take credit for it. It's great. What we've done is historic. Don't let them take it away. Don't take it away from ourselves," Trump says. "You are playing right into their hands when you sort of like, 'oh, the vaccine.' If you don't want to take it, you shouldn't be forced to take it. No mandates. But take credit, because we saved tens of millions of lives. Take credit. Don't let them take that away from you." Unvaccinated people face a 10 times greater risk of testing positive and 20 times greater risk of dying from Covid-19 than fully vaccinated people who have also received a booster, according to data published recently by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC data -- which assesses data through October -- suggests the gap in risk between unvaccinated people and those with a booster is even larger than it is between unvaccinated people and those who are fully vaccinated with their initial series. Unvaccinated people face a five times greater risk of testing positive for Covid-19 and 14 times greater risk of dying from Covid-19 than fully vaccinated people do, according to the CDC data. Trump, who contracted Covid as president, received his first Covid-19 vaccination out of view of the press before leaving office. CNN reported months later that his vaccination was not recorded by official photographers or videographers, according to a person familiar with the matter. And Trump did not participate in a Covid-19 public service announcement that featured all other living former presidents. Trump said in a Wall Street Journal interview that published in September that he was unlikely to get the booster shot, saying that he felt like he was "in good shape from that standpoint" and "probably won't" get the booster. "I'll look at stuff later on," he added. "I'm not against it, but it's probably not for me." This is not the first time Trump has been met with boos when speaking about vaccines. "I believe totally in your freedoms. I do. You've got to do what you have to do. But I recommend, take the vaccines. I did it. It's good. Take the vaccines," Trump said at an event in Alabama in August. Some in the audience responded by booing the statement. No, that's OK. That's all right," Trump said, seemingly acknowledging the boos. "You got your freedoms, but I happened to take the vaccine. If it doesn't work, you'll be the first to know, OK?"

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/12/02/politics/biden-covid-omicron-republican-blockade/index.html The entrenched Republican opposition to public health measures like vaccine and mask mandates has become one of the most difficult challenges facing President Joe Biden as he tries to fulfill his campaign promise to shut down the Covid-19 pandemic. GOP leaders for months have simultaneously blamed Biden for failing to stamp out the virus while becoming the party hellbent on protecting the rights of the unvaccinated, even if that means putting the health and safety of all other Americans at risk. The Gordian knot they have created for Biden was on full display once again Wednesday when -- at virtually the same time that the first case of the Omicron variant was discovered in the US -- several Republican senators threatened to derail a stopgap measure that will avert a government shutdown Friday night unless their colleagues acceded to their demand for a vote on defunding Biden's vaccine requirement for large employers. With unvaccinated Americans now about three times as likely to lean Republican as Democratic, Biden has found few influential GOP allies to help him push his case for vaccinations in deep red areas where Americans remain most resistant to getting them. Summing up what has become a central talking point for GOP candidates as they head into the 2022 midterm primaries, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz told reporters on Wednesday that his party should "use every tool we have to protect people's rights, and the vaccine mandates are illegal, they're abusive and they're hurting this country." But Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, warned that forcing a shutdown over a health measure intended to save lives would prove disastrous for the Republican Party: "I certainly hope they don't shut out the lights of this government (in) some kind of bold display of stupidity," he said. Not all Senate Republicans are going along with the machinations of conservative lawmakers -- namely Sens. Roger Marshall of Kansas and Mike Lee of Utah -- who would like to force a showdown over vaccine mandates. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters Wednesday that he thought "we're gonna be OK" as he worked to avert a shutdown. But this latest battle exemplified the degree to which America's chances of emerging from the pandemic anytime soon will continue to be dampened by the partisan posturing over public health measures. The contretemps on Capitol Hill is unfolding at a time when many Americans are anxious about whether they will be protected against the Omicron variant and just as Biden was slated to deliver a speech Thursday laying out his plans for the next phase of confronting the pandemic at the National Institutes of Health. The President pushed ahead with the vaccine requirements for large employers (whose workers could opt out if they adhered to routine testing) and certain health care workers after countless public health experts argued that the only way to end the pandemic was by increasing vaccination rates. Biden has gotten little help from Republicans as he has pleaded for Americans to get vaccinated. Tthe mandates had been slated to go into effect in January as the President faces the reality that roughly 45 million American adults are still unvaccinated -- and are unlikely to be persuaded by his arguments.

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/12/02/us/michigan-oxford-high-school-shooting-thursday/index.html Oxford, Michigan (CNN)The timeline of events leading up to a deadly high school shooting Tuesday in Michigan reveals there were concerns about the teen suspect's behavior before the tragedy that left four dead and seven injured. The day before Ethan Crumbley, 15, allegedly opened fire on his classmates at Oxford High School, the student met "with school personnel about some concerning behavior," Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. And hours before the shooting Tuesday, Crumbley and his parents had a meeting with school officials about a different issue, according to Bouchard, who declined to expand on the details of those discussions. During Crumbley's arraignment Wednesday, authorities said they found two videos on Crumbley's cell phone in which he talked about shooting and killing students at the high school. Another piece of evidence investigators uncovered is a journal that was in Crumbley's backpack that detailed his "desire to shoot up the school to include murdering students," Lt. Tim Willis said during the arraignment. Here's why the suspected Michigan school shooter has been charged with terrorism Here's why the suspected Michigan school shooter has been charged with terrorism Video from the school shows the assailant fired at the victims at close range, often aiming at the head or chest, Bouchard told CNN Wednesday. In court, prosecutors said video from school surveillance cameras showed Crumbley with a backpack, and a minute later exiting a bathroom without the backpack and with a gun in hand. Crumbley began firing outside the bathroom, prosecutor Marc Keast said. After students started running away, he proceeded down the hallway at a "methodical pace" and shot inside classrooms and at students who hadn't escaped, Keast said. That continued for another four or five minutes until he went to another bathroom, Keast said. When deputies arrived, he set down the gun and surrendered. Crumbley on Wednesday was charged as an adult with terrorism causing death and four counts of first-degree murder. He also faces seven counts of assault with intent to murder and 12 counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, Oakland County prosecutor Karen D. McDonald said. "There's a lot of digital evidence ... there's video, there's things that have been on social media, but you probably don't even need to see that to know how terrifying it is to be in close proximity of another student shooting and killing fellow students. I mean, it's terror," McDonald told CNN of the terrorism charge. Addressing the first-degree murder charges, McDonald told reporters the accusation "requires premeditation and I am absolutely sure after reviewing the evidence that it isn't even a close call, it was absolutely premeditated." Crumbley's lawyer entered a not guilty plea on the teen's behalf Wednesday during the arraignment. The judge scheduled a probable cause hearing for December 13 and a preliminary examination hearing for December 20. He's currently being held at the Oakland County Jail. Additionally, McDonald has indicated her office is considering charges against Crumbley's parents, with the potential charges stemming from the parents owning a firearm, which McDonald said comes with legal responsibilities like securing the gun properly and ensuring ammunition is kept separate. The weapon authorities said was used in the shooting, a 9mm Sig Sauer SP2022 semiautomatic pistol, was purchased by Crumbley's father four days before the shooting, Bouchard said Tuesday. CNN has pressed the prosecutor to speak on whether evidence was recovered to support potential charges and which charges are being considered. The prosecutor declined to go into detail citing the investigation, but reiterated that an announcement would be made as soon as possible regarding whether charges would be brought.

The Coalition for a Level Playing Field includes several European Union (EU)-based companies led by open source hosted cloud storage vendor Nextcloud. “This is quite similar to what Microsoft did when it killed competition in the [web] browser market, stopping nearly all browser innovation for over a decade. Copy an innovators' product, bundle it with your own dominant product and kill their business, then stop innovating,” says Frank Karlitschek, CEO and founder of Nextcloud. Arguing that Microsoft’s behavior is bad for the consumers, the coalition has asked the EC to enforce a level playing field for all the players, and ensure that Microsoft doesn’t leverage its dominant market position in the operating system sector to drive out competition in other segments. On their homepage, the coalition suggests that the anti-competitive behaviour of Big Tech is not only killing competition, but in doing so is harming the consumers and business. Microsoft is integrating [Microsoft] 365 deeper and deeper in their service and software portfolio, including Windows. OneDrive is pushed wherever users deal with file storage and Teams is a default part of Windows 11. This makes it nearly impossible to compete with their SaaS [Software-as-a-Service] services,” reasons the coalition. To further drive home the point, it argues that while Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have grown their market share to 66% in the EU, the share of local providers has contracted from 26% to 16%. If you looking to make you business data omnipresent, these are the best business cloud storage services

As the global semiconductor crunch grinds on, the major fabless companies—those without the sort of silicon manufacturing capability of a company like Intel—are fighting over limited wafer capacity so that they can continue to sell products with volume. The biggest of these companies by far is Apple. The staggering amount of money in the Cupertino company’s bank accounts mean that it's first in line to take up the limited capacity on offer from TSMC, leaving other fabless companies, such as Qualcomm, AMD and Nvidia fighting over what's left. AMD in particular, despite its apparent success, simply doesn't have the really big dollars to fight these larger companies in order to guarantee a good enough chip supply. Even in the last day or so, news comes that AMD is raising its GPU prices due to a rise in TSMC's costs. The way things are now, most current generation PC products (and consoles too) sell out as soon as they come into stock. Woeful graphics card prices are a meme at this point, DDR5 memory is being scalped at ridiculous prices and even motherboards continue to creep upwards in price thanks to component shortages. And that's just on the supply side. The pandemic means more people work from home. They need PC’s and laptops because their tablets and phones don’t have the grunt to deal with most workflows and multitasking. And with lockdowns and more time at home, we have more time to play games. This means we have a supply and demand double whammy. Companies know they have a rare opportunity to capitalise and make huge profits, but in order to do that, they need reliable component suppliers too. Taiwan based TSMC, the major supplier of many of the CPUs, GPUs and components that are critical to the running of our PCs, isn't the only chip maker, even it it is the most technologically advanced one at this point in time. AMD's Zen 4 processors are rumored to be built on TSMCs 5nm node. It's been reported that next generation Nvidia GPUs will also be built by TSMC, and not Samsung. So with Apple hogging a lot of TSMC's advanced node production capacity, and Nvidia joining the fight over what's left, AMD could find itself being squeezed out by its more cash flush competitors. A picutre of Samsung's Austin, Texas facility That brings us to Zen 5. It's a given that AMD would never partner with Intel. Global Foundries (AMD's former fab division) and UMC aren't trying to compete with TSMC on the bleeding edge nodes, but Samsung is, and it may be that AMD is uniquely positioned to partner with the Korean giant to manufacture its future products. If such a move happens, we're unlikely to see the fruits of the partnership for a few years. These decisions are made years in advance as the design of a CPU and the node it is manufactured on are very much tied together. You can be sure that Zen 5 development is well underway, so if such a move were to happen, the documents have probably already been signed. Black Friday deals Black Friday 2021 deals: the place to go for the all the best early Black Friday bargains. We can't ignore the current geopolitical tensions. The China and Taiwan issue isn’t going to go away anytime soon, and it's certain that a global leader in manufacturing like TSMC is a pawn on the minds of Chinese and Taiwanese leaders. Relying on one manufacturer can be catastrophic if there is a supply side shock. However, if the political situation deteriorates further, the loss of TSMC output would make the current semiconductor shortage look like the effect a couple of burnt muffins has on a Sunday cake stall. Should AMD partner with Samsung, they’ll be neighbours. Samsung has announced the construction of a new $17B plant in Taylor, Texas which is just a few kilometers up the road from Austin, Texas. Guess who else has a significant corporate presence in Austin? You guessed it. AMD. Though such a geographical link may prove entirely coincidental, a USA based cutting edge mega foundry won’t have to go far to find customers. Smart money wouldn’t bet against AMD being one of them.

The PC was declared the Ultimate Hardware of All Time at the Golden Joystick Awards yesterday, an obvious and completely correct acknowledgement that PCs both predate and outpace any game console you care to name. As Gabe Newell put it in his award acceptance speech, "Gamers and developers have benefited enormously from the relentless innovation in PC gaming hardware." But if PC is the ultimate gaming hardware, then what, you might reasonably ask, is the ultimate game? That, according to the Golden Joysticks, is FromSoftware's 2011 ARPG Dark Souls, which beat out other contenders in the fan-voted category including Doom, Half-Life 2, Minecraft, Halo: Combat Evolved, Grand Theft Auto 5, Portal, and Space Invaders. "Thank you very much for receiving such a wonderful award," Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki said in a statement reported by Yahoo Japan (via Google Translate). "It's still unbelievable that the user chose from the nominated works, but I feel it's a great honor." Sponsored Links Top 30 Most Beautiful Women in the World HealthyWomanMag Miyazaki also paid tribute to his colleagues at FromSoftware, saying that newcomers to the studio when it began working on Dark Souls are now "the core of the latest effort, Elden Ring." It's interesting to recall, in light of this award, that the original release of Dark Souls on PC, the Prepare to Die edition, was really quite a mess. FromSoftware described it ahead of launch as "strictly a port from the console version," with no optimizations for PC, and they weren't kidding: Among other issues, it was locked to 720p/30fps at launch, which even in 2013 was definitely not cool. Modding hero Peter "Durante" Thoman quickly released a patch that did away with those graphical limitations, but it still suffered from wonky sound and brutally bad mouse-and-keyboard controls. It wasn't until the 2018 release of Dark Souls Remastered that we got an out-of-the-box experience that didn't look like it was deliberately calculated to make us all buy PS3s. Hopefully the rollout of FromSoftware's latest soulslike will be a lot smoother: Elden Ring is currently set to arrive sometime in February 2022.
