This week Facebook has released Opacus, a new open-source project designed to train PyTorch models with differential privacy (DP). According to the company, differential privacy is a mathematical framework for quantifying the anonymization of sensitive data. It is meant to make PyTorch models more scalable and the adoption of machine learning easier. “With the release of Opacus, we hope to provide an easier path for researchers and engineers to adopt differential privacy in ML, as well as to accelerate DP research in the field,” Davide Testuggine and Ilya Mironov, applied research scientists at Facebook, wrote in a post. Key features of the release include: Create your own user feedback survey Ability to compute batched pre-sample gradients throughAUtograd hooks in PyTorch. Facebook explained this approach is much faster than existing DP libraries that use microbatching. Security features such as a cryptographically safe pseudo-random number generator Ability to quickly prototype ideas and mix and match code with PyTorch and Python code Tutorials and helper functions to improve productivity Ability to keep track of privacy budgets Pre-trained and fine-tuned models “Our goal with Opacus is to preserve the privacy of each training sample while limiting the impact on the accuracy of the final model. Opacus does this by modifying a standard PyTorch optimizer in order to enforce (and measure) DP during training. More specifically, our approach is centered on differentially private stochastic gradient descent (DP-SGD),” the researchers wrote. Testuggine and Mironov went on to explain that privacy-preserving machine learning is important because it minimizes attack surfaces and allows app developers to focus on building products. “We hope that by developing PyTorch tools like Opacus, we’re democratizing access to such privacy-preserving resources. We’re bridging the divide between the security community and general ML engineers with a faster, more flexible platform using PyTorch,” they wrote.

US President Donald Trump has described as a "slimeball" a journalist who quoted him as saying dead US soldiers were "losers" and "suckers". He likened the Atlantic magazine report to unproven accusations made against him of colluding with Russia to win the presidential election of 2016. The damning quotes were corroborated independently by The Associated Press. Veterans' groups are among those condemning Mr Trump, less than two months from the 2020 election. Progressive group VoteVets posted a video of families whose children had been killed in action. "You don't know what it is to sacrifice," says one. Paul Rieckhoff of the Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America, tweeted: "Who is really surprised by this?" A small group of protesters waved placards at the president's motorcade on Saturday near the Trump National Golf Club in Virginia. Mr Trump has often staked a claim to strong support among the military, and last year Pew Research Center found that veterans were generally supportive of him as commander-in-chief, with 57% in favour. Three-fifths of the veterans identified as Republican, the research found. What is Trump reported to have said? According to The Atlantic, when Mr Trump cancelled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery outside Paris in November 2018, 100 years after the end of World War One, he said it was "filled with losers". Four sources told the magazine he had rejected the idea of visiting because the rain would dishevel his hair, and he did not believe it important to honour America's war dead. During the same trip, the president also allegedly referred to 1,800 US soldiers who died at Belleau Wood as "suckers". The battle helped to prevent a German advance on Paris during World War One and is venerated by the US Marine Corps. The Atlantic's reporting was based on anonymous sources but a "senior Defense Department official with first-hand knowledge of events" and a "senior U.S. Marine Corps officer who was told about Trump's comments" confirmed the cemetery comments to AP. In 2018 the White House said the cemetery visit had been cancelled because bad weather had grounded the president's helicopter. This account was backed up in a recent book by President Trump's former national security adviser, John Bolton, who has been a vocal critic of Mr Trump. The US Navy also said it cancelled the trip to the cemetery because of rain in response to a request under the Freedom of Information Act from Buzzfeed reporter Jason Leopold. How did Trump react? Without referring to Jeffrey Goldberg, the author of the Atlantic report, by name, he tweeted on Saturday: "You work so hard for the military, from completely rebuilding a depleted mess that was left by OBiden [the previous presidential administration when Joe Biden was vice-president to Barack Obama], to fixing a broken V.A. and fighting for large scale military pay raises, and then a slimeball reporter, maybe working with disgruntled people, makes up such a horrible charge.." "This reminds me of the Dirty Dossier [the Steele dossier which alleged collusion with Russia], which was pushed hard by John McCain, & then with a thud turned out to be a total fraud. Mr Biden, the Democratic challenger in the 3 November election, said his rival was "unfit" to lead. "Mr. President, if you don't respect our troops, you can't lead them," he tweeted. If elected, he said, he would "ensure that our American heroes know that I will have their back and honor their sacrifice. Always." Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth, a veteran who lost both legs while serving in Iraq, said President Trump "liked to use the US military for his own ego". Khizr Khan, the father of a US soldier killed in Iraq who criticised Mr Trump during the 2016 Democratic convention, joined Ms Duckworth on the call. He said: "When Donald Trump calls anyone who places their lives in service of others a loser, we understand Trump's soul." Where do Trump and the US military stand? There have been previous spats and controversies. Mr Trump caused outrage by saying the late Senator John McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam, was not a "war hero" saying: "I like people who weren't captured." The president has never served in uniform. He received five deferments from a military draft during the Vietnam War - four for academic reasons and one for bone spurs, a calcium build-up in the heels. Joe Biden received five student draft deferments during the Vietnam War before being disqualified from serving in the military because of asthma as a teenager.

Something to look forward to: We know that the RTX 3080 is a beast of a card, one that leaves the Turing flagship RTX 2080 Ti in the dust. Nvidia recently showed how the two compare in a 4K showdown on Doom Eternal. Now, the company has promised frame rates over 100 fps in other AAA games, all while in 4K with settings maxed and RTX on. Nvidia yesterday posted a video that displayed the RTX 3080's ability to power Doom Eternal in 4K at around 150 fps with settings turned all the way up. That's very impressive, but what about games that aren't as well-optimized as id Software's shooter? Nvidia says we can still expect anywhere between 60 and over 100 fps, even at that high resolution. In a Reddit Q&A, Nvidia's director of GeForce product management, Justin Walker, answered a question on whether the RTX 3080's 10GB of GDDR6X was enough to run next-gen AAA titles. "We're constantly analyzing memory requirements of the latest games and regularly review with game developers to understand their memory needs for current and upcoming games," said Walker. "The goal of 3080 is to give you great performance at up to 4k resolution with all the settings maxed out at the best possible price." Walker named Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Metro Exodus, Wolfenstein Youngblood, Gears of War 5, Borderlands 3, and Red Dead Redemption 2 as games that will hit that 60 – 100 fps range while in 4K with max settings, including any texture packs, and with RTX on where supported. Police in the US have shot dead a man suspected of fatally shooting a right-wing activist during protests in Portland, Oregon, officials say. Michael Reinoehl, 48, a self-described antifa supporter, was filmed shooting the man during last weekend's tension, and admitted to it before his death. Reinoehl earlier said he acted in self-defence when he shot Aaron Danielson, a supporter of the Patriot Prayer group. Police said he was armed and was shot during a confrontation with officers. Black Lives Matter protests have been taking place nightly in Portland since the killing of black man George Floyd in May. Last Saturday Trump supporters held a large rally and fought with anti-racism protesters in violent exchanges. Reinoehl, who regularly attended the protests, had told Vice News that he had thought he and a friend were going to be stabbed by Danielson. "I had no choice. I mean, I, I had a choice. I could have sat there and watched them kill a friend of mine of colour. But I wasn't going to do that," he said. On Thursday President Trump had highlighted the killing of Danielson, tweeting "Why aren't the Portland police arresting the cold blooded killer of Aaron "Jay" Danielson. A warrant for Reinoehl's arrest was issued and he was located by agents on Thursday in Lacey, Washington about 120 miles (193km) north of Portland. Thurston County Sheriff's Lieutenant Ray Brady said it was not clear why the suspect was in Lacey and he did not believe the suspect lived at the address. Lieutenant Brady said the police were conducting surveillance when the suspect left the apartment and got into a vehicle in the road. "There was a confrontation between the officers that were on scene and the subject," he said. "The information we have at this time is that the subject was armed. There were shots that were fired into the vehicle and the subject fled from the vehicle, at which time there was additional shots that were fired." He said four officers fired their weapons. Who was Michael Reinoehl? Reinoehl was a regular participant in Portland's anti-racism demonstrations and was part of the protesters' security team that aimed to protect demonstrators from potential agitators. The father-of-two described himself on social media as an army veteran and professional snowboarder. He told Vice News he had not turned himself in to police after shooting Danielson because he believed right-wing protesters were collaborating with police who would not protect him. "I am 100% ANTIFA all the way!" Reinoehl posted on Instagram in June and he suggested that the counter-protesters' tactics amounted to "warfare", according to US media. "Nightly, he would break up fights [...] He wanted change so badly," a friend of Reinoehl, Randal McCorkle, told the New York Times. On 26 July he told AP that he had been shot in his arm after intervening in a fight between an armed white man and a group of young black people. In July, while the protests were ongoing, he was told to appear in court on charges of carrying a loaded gun in public and resisting arrest. We've heard for a few years now that the Snapdragon-powered Windows on Arm platform will be challenging Intel and AMD in the laptop market, but that scenario's failed to materialize. Qualcomm, however, isn't giving up. At IFA 2020, the company announced the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G, which offers several improvements over its Snapdragon 8cx predecessor. While the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 doesn't appear to be faster than the original 8cx (the x stands for "extreme" power), Qualcomm says its AI abilities have been improved, and the chip supports the latest Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 standards. Gen 2 also features "generational performance and efficiency gains." Qualcomm went out of its way to compare the 8cx Gen 2 5G to rival Intel's laptop chips, boasting that it offers more than 50 percent greater "systemwide performance and battery life versus competing solutions" while using "a fraction of the power." Compared to a 10th-gen Core i5 (15 TDP), the 8cx Gen 2 boasts 18% more total system performance and 39% more productivity performance/watt. Going up against Intel's Lakefield chips, which also use a hybrid core architecture, performance is up 51% and productivity performance/watt is 58%. Battery life has always been one of Windows on Arm's best features, and the 8cx Gen 2 pushes this even further, offering 25 hours of continuous use, which is enough to last for "multiple days."
