  1. Tyson Steele, then 30 years old, had spent years dreaming of doing something that most people would deem a crazy decision. Having fantasized of living in the wilderness, Tyson bought 40 acres of land in an area called Skwentna, near the Alaskan frontier, 60 miles away from the city of Anchorage. Tyson was no stranger to the Alaskan wilderness, as he had visited a few times prior. He quickly moved to his plot of land and was ready to begin his new life with very few material possessions: a plastic hut he had bought from a Vietnam veteran, some food and some tools. However, Tyson could have never predicted the bittersweet journey ahead of him.

  2. At least 12 people have been killed as two storms tore through the Caribbean on Sunday. Hurricane Marco and Tropical Storm Laura brought high winds and rough seas leaving at least nine people dead in Haiti and another three in the Dominican Republic. Heavy rains have also battered Cuba and the US territory of Puerto Rico. Marco is expected to make landfall in the US state of Louisiana on Monday, with Laura hitting Texas by Thursday. The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that Laura was expected to strengthen into a hurricane by early Tuesday. Forecasters also say that Laura may swing east towards Louisiana, and it could be the first time in recorded history that the state has been hit by two back-to-back hurricanes. The positions for Marco and Laura are at 0300 GMT Monday. Source: National Hurricane Centre What's known about the victims? Nine people were killed in Haiti. Two more, a mother and her child, are missing after being swept away by flood waters, according to Civil Protection Director Jerry Chandler. Local media say the missing woman works as a paediatrician at a hospital in the capital, Port-au-Prince. Among those killed is a 10-year-old girl who was hit by a falling branch in Anse-à-Pitres, on Haiti's southern coast near the border with the Dominican Republic. A woman died in floodwaters in Jacmel, also on the southern coast, while a man and two more women died in and around Port-au-Prince. Footage shared on social media showed Haitians trying to get to safety as the flood waters were rising quickly. No details of the other Haitian victims have so far been released. In neighbouring Dominican Republic, a 37-year-old woman and her nine-year-old son died when a wall in their home west of the capital, Santo Domingo, collapsed during heavy rains. A 22-year-old man died when his home collapsed under the weight of a falling tree. In total, 200 homes were damaged in the Dominican Republic and 1,000 people had to be evacuated. Meanwhile in Cuba, many residents in the country's eastern regions have been evacuated and housed in shelters or safer buildings on higher ground. Where are the storms headed? Marco strengthened to a hurricane on Sunday, with sustained winds of up to 75mph (120km/h), and is moving north between Cuba and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Laura is predicted to head northwest towards Houston, America's fourth-largest city. The US National Hurricane Centre has warned that back-to-back hurricanes arriving in the US within days of one another could result in prolonged periods of hazardous weather. The US Coast Guard has issued a warning for the Port of New Orleans, and called on ships to make plans to evacuate some areas. US President Donald Trump has issued a disaster declaration for Louisiana, ordering federal assistance to coordinate relief efforts. On Saturday, a similar declaration was made for Puerto Rico.

  7. In brief: The first images of Nvidia’s Ampere-based GeForce RTX 3090 have leaked onto the Internet ahead of Nvidia’s planned August 31 unveiling. The leaker, who said the images came from 4chan, described the card as the “Titan” of this generation and claims it’ll retail for $1,400. The photos in question come courtesy of Twitter user @GarnetSunset. In the first, we see the purported 3090 beside an RTX 2080, which it absolutely dwarfs in terms of sheer size. The triple-slot card features a single cooling fan on the front that’s mounted to an impressive looking heatsink with no shortage of cooling fin arrays. Around back is an equally large fan positioned at the opposite end of the card. As you can see, most of the fins here are covered by a backplate. It also appears as if there is something written on the backplate but this looks to have been digitally masked – maybe RTX 3090? For what it’s worth, the leaker also said the 3080 will be priced at $800 followed by the 3070 at $600 and the 3060 at $400. The heatsink design looks to be very similar to the leaked 3080 heatsinks we saw a few months back. As always, one should take leaks like these with a grain of salt. It’s fun to speculate but we won’t know for certain until Nvidia shares official details at the end of the month.

  9. When it comes to being married, it’s more than just walking down the aisle and meeting your loved one at the altar. It’s a commitment you take for life, where you vow to be faithful, loving and understanding. However, not all marriages follow this pattern, and Laura soon learned it the hard way when her husband left her a devastating letter. What he didn’t know was that she had some news that would totally ruin his life!

  10. The acutely ill Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has arrived in Germany from Siberia for treatment. He is in a coma after drinking what his supporters suspect was poisoned tea; they accuse the authorities of trying to conceal a crime. Doctors treating him in Omsk had insisted on Friday that he was too ill to be moved. But they later said his condition was stable enough for the flight. His wife Yulia is travelling with him. On Saturday morning, Mr Navalny's medical evacuation flight - paid for by the German non-governmental organisation Cinema for Peace - landed at Tegel airport in Berlin. He is being treated at the Charité hospital in the German capital. The founder of the Cinema for Peace Foundation, activist and filmmaker Jaka Bizilj, told reporters outside the hospital that Mr Navalny's condition was "very worrying". "It's not only about the question if he will survive this," he said. "It's a question what kind of damage there is, if he will survive this and come back to normal fully." Mr Navalny's personal doctor, Anastasia Vasilieva, was not allowed to see him while he was in hospital in Russia. But she said she was hopeful he could recover now that he was in Germany. "I'm sure that they can treat him and do everything to eliminate this toxic agent from his body." Medical staff treating Mr Navalny at the hospital in Omsk said before his flight that his life was not in immediate danger. Mr Navalny's spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, earlier tweeted: "Massive thanks to everyone for their support. The struggle for Alexei's life and health is just beginning." Ms Yarmysh said it was a pity that doctors had taken so long to approve his flight as the plane and the right documents had been ready since Friday morning. Mr Navalny fell ill during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow on Thursday, and his plane made an emergency landing in Omsk. A photograph on social media appeared to show him drinking from a cup at a Tomsk airport cafe before the flight. His team suspects a poisonous substance was put in his tea. Disturbing video appeared to show a stricken Mr Navalny howling in agony on the flight. Passenger Pavel Lebedev said he had heard the activist "screaming in pain". What the doctors said on Friday The head doctor at the hospital where Mr Navalny was being treated in Omsk, Alexander Murakhovsky, warned late on Friday that doctors did not recommend flying "but his wife insists on her husband being transferred to a German clinic". "The patient's condition is stable," deputy chief doctor Anatoly Kalinichenko was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. "As we're in possession of a request from relatives to permit him to be transported somewhere, we have now taken the decision that we do not object to his transfer to another in-patient facility," Dr Kalinichenko said. Doctors said earlier that no poison had been found in his body, suggesting his condition might be the result of a "metabolic disorder" caused by low blood sugar. Health officials then indicated that traces of an industrial chemical had been found on his skin and hair. The local interior ministry told the Rapsi legal news agency that the chemical was usually included in polymers to improve their elasticity, but its concentration was impossible to establish. The prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin has consistently exposed official corruption in Russia. He has served multiple jail terms. What do Mr Navalny's supporters say? At a news conference in Berlin on Friday, Mr Navalny's aide Leonid Volkov said at first doctors at the hospital had been helping to facilitate his transfer but had abruptly stopped doing so. "[It was] like something was switched off - like medicine mode off, cover-up operation mode on - and the doctors refused to co-operate any more, refused to give any information even to Alexei's wife," he said. "The doctors who were helping to do the paperwork to make the transportation of Alexei to Charité possible started to say that he's not any more transportable, he's not any more stable, contradicting themselves." In 2018, the Cinema for Peace Foundation arranged for the treatment of Pyotr Verzilov - an activist with Russian protest group Pussy Riot - who had symptoms of poisoning. Mr Verzilov's ex-wife, activist Nadya Tolokonnikova, told BBC News that Mr Navalny's condition resembled the "poisoning" of her ex-husband. "What German doctors told me after not finding poison in my ex-husband's blood is that the poison disappears in three days. So the Russian doctors only let him go when they were sure there was no traces of poison left," she explained. She also expressed surprise about what has happened to Mr Navalny: "I thought Alexei was so powerful as a political figure that Mr Putin would not interfere." Mr Navalny's wife Yulia wrote to President Putin asking him to allow her husband to be moved. She feared the Russian authorities were stalling so that evidence of any chemical substance would be lost. Mr Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that the Kremlin would help move Mr Navalny abroad if necessary and wished him a "speedy recovery". On Friday he said it was purely a medical decision. Foreign leaders including Germany's Angela Merkel and France's Emmanuel Macron have expressed concern for Mr Navalny. In the US, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has described the incident as "unacceptable" and vowed that, if elected, he would "stand up to autocrats like Putin". After Mr Navalny was flown to Germany, UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab tweeted: "It is vital that there is a full & transparent investigation into his poisoning." Timeline: Navalny targeted April 2017: He was taken to hospital after an antiseptic green dye was splashed on his face in Moscow. It was the second time he was targeted with zelyonka ("brilliant green" in English) that year. "It looks funny but it hurts like hell," he tweeted following the attack. July 2019: He was sentenced to 30 days in prison after calling for unauthorised protests. He fell ill in jail and doctors said he had suffered an acute allergic reaction, diagnosing him with "contact dermatitis". His own doctor suggested he might have been exposed to "some toxic agent" and Mr Navalny said he thought he might have been poisoned. December 2019: Russian security forces raided the offices of his Anti-Corruption Foundation, taking laptops and other equipment. CCTV footage showed officials using power tools to get through the door. Earlier that year, his organisation was declared a "foreign agent".

  16. Editor's take: Extreme overclocking of this nature is more about the thrill of the chase than securing stable settings for long-term use. Like auto tuners, there’s something addictive about tweaking hardware and squeezing the absolutely maximum amount of performance from components that were never meant to go that fast. Anyone can milk a few extra clock cycles out of a CPU, GPU or memory subsystem but it takes a true tactician to reach the stratosphere. Asus’ ROG overclocking team has managed to set a new DDR4 memory frequency world record. Using an Asus ROG Strix B550-I Gaming motherboard and AMD’s Ryzen 7 4700GE APU, the team, led by Taiwanese overclocker Bianbao XE, managed to push their Crucial Ballistix MAX DDR4 memory to a record-setting 3333.3 MHz (DDR4-6666). The crew had to loosen memory timings to 30-27-27-58-127-1 (tCAS-tRC-tRP-tRAS-tCS-tCR) to get there. The APU, for those curious, was run at 1889 MHz (17 x 111.11 MHz) at 1.5v and cooled with liquid nitrogen. Asus’ ROG Strix B550-I Gaming is a mini ITX form factor motherboard, a common choice among memory overclockers due to the shorter trace distances between the memory and CPU. The Crucial Ballistix memory used was a single 8GB stick of DDR4-2666. Other hardware used during the run included a 60GB Kingston solid state drive and a 500w FSP Fortron power supply.

  17. This week’s highlighted open-source project is OpenEEW, which is an open source version of Grillo’s earthquake early-warning (EEW) system, designed to sense, detect, and analyze earthquakes, then alert affected communities. The project was recently accepted into the Linux Foundation. The Linux Foundation in collaboration with IBM will work to accelerate the standardization and deployment of EEW systems to make communities more prepared for earthquakes. The project was developed as a way to reduce the costs of EEW systems, accelerate deployments around the world, and save lives. “For years we have seen that EEWs have only been possible with very significant governmental financing, due to the cost of dedicated infrastructure and development of algorithms. We expect that OpenEEW will reduce these barriers and work towards a future where everyone who lives in seismically-active areas can feel safe,” said Andres Meira, founder of Grillo. The OpenEEW Project includes hardware that can detect and transmit ground motion, real-time detection systems that can be deployed on various platforms like a Kubernetes cluster or a Raspberry Pi, and applications that allow users to receive alerts on devices, wearables, or mobile apps. To further the project, open source contributors can contribute to the three main OpenEEW components: deploying sensors, detecting earthquakes, and sending alerts. According to the Linux Foundation, Grillo’s sensors have generated over 1 TB of data since 2017, including information from earthquakes of magnitudes 6 and 7. This data was collected in Mexico, Chile, Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica. That data is currently being utilized by Harvard University and University of Oregon researchers to develop new machine learning earthquake characterization and detection methods. “Understanding the ground on which Mexico City is built is an important facet of earthquake hazards. With support from the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, we are working with Grillo to deploy a dense network of sensors across Mexico City and analyze the seismic behavior and local seismicity beneath the ancient lake basin. Our collaboration also enables open source software development for the next generation of seismology on the cloud,” said Maine Denolle, professor at Harvard.

  19. Russian doctors treating Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, who fell into a coma after being taken ill on a plane, have changed their minds and agreed to let him be flown to Germany. The doctors, in the Siberian city of Omsk, had earlier insisted he was too ill to be moved. His supporters suspect he was poisoned, and accuse the authorities of trying to cover up a crime. A medically equipped plane is waiting to take him to Germany for treatment. Reports say he could leave within hours. "The patient's condition is stable," Dr Anatoly Kalinichenko was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. "As we're in possession of a request from relatives to permit him to be transported somewhere, we have now taken the decision that we do not object to his transfer to another in-patient facility." The Berlin-based Cinema for Peace Foundation organised an air ambulance to pick up Mr Navalny and bring him back to Berlin, where it said the Charite hospital was ready to treat him. It said its doctors had judged Mr Navalny fit to travel and wanted to fly on Friday night or Saturday morning. "They can fly him, we are willing," it told the BBC. "The circumstances and equipment make it possible." At a news conference in Berlin, Mr Navalny's aide Leonid Volkov said at first doctors at the hospital had been helping to facilitate his transfer but abruptly stopped doing so. 20. When the time comes for prom, teenagers, especially girls, can get a little anxious. The most important thing is what dress they are going to wear. In this situation, this girl was afraid and a little bit ashamed to go to a store where there were expensive dresses that she knew she couldn't afford. She would fantasize that she would pick her dream dress, go to the register, buy it, and have her dress for the prom. Because she couldn't afford an expensive dress, she went to the mall, picked one of the dresses there and decided that she was going to start saving for it. On the other hand, her date wanted to know what she was going in, and when he found out that she opted for a cheap dress, he wasn't going to take her to the prom no more.
