  1. Apple is quietly raising the price of its Apple Music Student plan again, but this time, in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The changes were first spotted by Twitter users(opens in new tab) who noticed the price hike in the American plan, which is now $5.99 a month. Going through the Canadian and UK stores, you’ll see the same increases, which are now $5.99 and £5.99, respectively. Following trends The price hike appears to have been made within the past few days. If you use the Wayback Machine to look at archived pages(opens in new tab) of the Apple Music Store from June 21, you’ll see the old price of $4.99 USD. The same thing goes for the Canadian and British pages. This recent move isn't out of the blue. Other countries have seen similar price hikes. According to a report from MacRumors(opens in new tab), other locations include Australia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, India, and Israel just to name a few. But in those countries, Apple took the time to give everyone a heads up, sending out emails that some shared on Twitter(opens in new tab). As for the other plans, everything appears to be the same. The Apple Music Individual plan is still $9.99 a month in the US, for example. The same can be said for the Family and Voice plans, so it’s unclear why only the Student plan got the price hike. Apple has yet to make an official statement or send out an email explaining its decision. We asked the company if it could explain the change and, perhaps, reveal if any more countries will get the same price hike. Unfortunately, Apple representatives never got back to us. Analysis: Hunting for better deals With this price hike, students may start to look for better deals with streaming services. For example, Spotify’s Premium Student plan(opens in new tab) is looking pretty good right now. For $4.99, students get access to Spotify Premium plus a dual subscription to Hulu and Showtime. Granted, Apple Music has better-sounding music thanks to its Spatial Audio feature, whereas Spotify still hasn’t launched lossless audio. But there’s more to Spotify than music. In recent months, the platform has further increased support for podcasts and revealed it’s working on bringing in audiobooks. Apple is trying to win over podcast creators, but it’s unknown if it'll be enough to make people stay on the pricier Student plan. If you’re interested in knowing if Spotify or Apple Music is better, TechRadar recently put the two services head to head.
  2. MSI is getting ready to launch its next-gen MEG Power Supply lineup which will be fully ATX 3.0 standard compliant. The new PSUs are designed to sustain up to 3x GPU Power Excursions and twice the system power excursion. MSI's Next-Gen MEG Power Supply Series Is Fully ATX 3.0 Compliant & Can Sustain 3x Power Excursion Loads On Next-Gen GPUs We recently detailed the MSI MEG Ai1300P and ME Ai1000P Power Supply units which are being designed to be fully compliant with the ATX 3.0 standard. The new standard will be a must for PC builders who are looking to get next-gen components for their systems. As PCs get faster than ever, the power requirements are also going to go up and it's not just the overall power consumption but systems need to have a proper power management system that can sustain both, the power excursions and transient power spikes, that will be over 2-3x the rated power spec. MSI is developing its new MEG Power Supply lineup which that in mind and has stated that the unit will be able to sustain up to 2x the total system power excursion and 3x the GPU power excursion. Now why this matters is because a few years ago when GPUs peaked at 300W TDPs, a power spike of 3x would have meant that the PSU would have to handle up to 900W of power to the GPU for a few milliseconds. These few milliseconds are crucial and if the Power Supply wasn't good enough, it would have caused the PC to shut down or restart as over-current protection. Now a good 800W to 1000W high-end PSU should have been enough to handle those 300W GPUs but the next-gen chips are said to feature 450-600W designs. This means that the Power Supply will have to sustain up to 1350W of load, a 50% increase in Power Excursions versus the last generation of GPUs. If PSUs aren't designed with this in mind, then there's a good chance that your PC will be completely unstable while running next-gen hardware such as NVIDIA's & AMD's upcoming GPU lineup. We go more into these details over here but the excerpt is that you will definitely require a high-end ATX 3.0-compliant power supply for your next-gen GPU if you don't want to end up in any sort of issues with your next PC build. You can also check out the Gamers Nexus video on the topic below: So coming back to the MSI MEG Power Supply lineup, the next feature is the PCIe Gen 5 connector itself. If you were to use an existing PSU with a Gen 5 graphics card, you'll have to run an adapter & that comes with its own drawbacks such as cable routing and individual rails being used. A Gen 5 to Gen 5 connector is more efficient, delivering up to 600W of power which will be where most next-gen GPUs top out. The PSU series will also feature a multi/single Rail switch along with the MSI G.I. (Gaming Intelligence) engine support. Some of the main features that the G.I. engine provides through the MSI Center application include: Real-Time Power Status Monitor: Through the MSI Center, this power supply helps monitor the real-time status of the percentage of power supplied to GPU and CPU and the total system wattage used. Multi/Single Rail Switch: It can switch between single and multi-rail according to the needs of users while taking into account high current output and safety protection. Intelligent Fan Mode: Automatically detect the power loading and internal temperature to adjust the fan speed. When the load is below 55% or the temperatures are below 70 degrees, the fan will automatically stop to reduce noise This truly puts MSI's MEG Power Supply lineup as one of the earliest to fully support the new PCIe Gen 5 interface. Currently, there's no word on pricing or availability but more details are expected to be announced by the second quarter of 2022. Plus there might also be an even powerful MEG PSU on the horizon, stay tuned for information on that soon!
  3. In just the first half of 2022, Team Penske and the Porsche 963 LMDh have already logged more miles than the furthest distance that has ever been recorded at Le Mans. With that much time already in its logbook, Porsche has finally decided its racing livery was ready to be revealed to the world. In 2023, the Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 LMDh will take on the top echelon of endurance racing around the world with IMSA here in the U.S. and the World Endurance Championship (WEC). That schedule also includes the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in which Porsche's last overall win was 25 years ago. That's not all, as Porsche closed the announcement with news that they will also offer a customer racecar program to go along with the works effort cars. At the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Porsche and Penske unveiled the 963 LMDh in its full racing livery, which is done in the traditional Porsche factory-backed colors of white, red and black. At the same time, the driver lineup was also announced for IMSA and WEC with Porsche factory-backed drivers joining two accomplished sports car drivers from California and Brazil. Those drivers will first take the 680-hp hybrid race cars out on their first competitive laps at the 2023 Daytona 24 Hours in January. There, under the IMSA WeatherTech Series banner, the 963 will compete in the newly formed GTP class, recalling the early glory days of prototype racing in North America. The last time a Porsche raced in the GTP class was with the 962 in 1993, when it was outclassed by Nissan and Mazda by 1988. So, finally, the update to make a competitive successor to the 962 has come, nearly 35 years later. Much like those GTP cars, however, the LMDh and new GTP are state of the art for their era. Instead of 3.0-liter flat sixes making 695 hp, these new LMDh-based Porsches will make 680 hp using a 4.6-liter twin-turbo V-8 based off of the racing version of the RS Spyder. That same engine took Porsche and Penske to endurance racing wins from 2005 to 2008. While the 963 takes some design cues from the 956 and 962, the rear of the car is inspired by the 992-generation 911. The chassis is built to comply with LMP2 regulations and manufactured by Multimatic while Bosch, Williams Advanced Engineering, and Xtrac will provide the other elements, including the hybrid power components. For the IMSA side, these parts will come together at Penske Motorsports in Mooresville, North Carolina while FIA WEC cars will be handled by the Mannheim, Germany branch. On top of the factory-backed effort with Team Penske—and in tradition of the 956, 962, and other racing cars built by Porsche—the 963 will also be offered to customer teams. Porsche didn't offer up a cost for these privateer models, but stated that it will announce the program in "the next few days." That's exciting to think about as, currently, there are no privateer-effort LMDh programs. The vehicles that are competing in LMDh are 100-percent OEM efforts (which is important to the health of the class), but the inclusion of privateers is always good for endurance racing. With Porsche offering up a potentially competitive 963 for private teams to purchase and run in their own programs is a great step for endurance racing and fans. The more cars that compete, the more exciting the class will become.
  4. Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and key members of the British royal family, got their portrait unveiled at Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum on Thursday. The portrait has been done by award-winning artist Jamie Coreth, and according to The Independent, it was commissioned in 2021 by the Cambridgeshire Royal Portrait Fund as a gift to Cambridgeshire. In the full-length portrait, the duke and duchess stand together and appear to be looking at the distance, with their arms around each other’s waist. They have a soft expression on their faces with Kate showing just a hint of a smile. Interestingly, the duchess is seen wearing a beautiful brooch comprising a large pearl surrounded by diamonds, and a second smaller pearl hanging like a teardrop. It is said that the accessory dates back to the 19th century, when it was crafted by a London-based jeweller, Garrard, to honour Princess Augusta of Hesse-Kessel, who became Duchess of Cambridge after marrying Prince Adolphus, the Duke of Cambridge, at Buckingham Palace in 1818, the Independent report states. The piece of jewellery has been in the family for centuries, and it was last passed on to Queen Elizabeth II by her grandmother Queen Mary in 1953. The queen has, in fact, worn the brooch on several occasions, including for her official 50th birthday portrait. In addition to the brooch, Kate is also seen wearing a pearl bracelet — presumably belonging to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana — along with a pair of green Manolo Blahnik heels and an emerald green silk dress by design label The Vampire’s Wife, which she had previously worn during a trip to Ireland in 2020.
  5. At Mississippi's last abortion clinic, doctors arrive at work greeted by abuse and prayers for their souls. The Pink House, as it's known, sits on the corner of one of Jackson's main roads. There are tall gates shielding the windows from the outside world, and music blares in an attempt to drown out the noise. "Murderer!" shouts one protestor. "Turn to Christ!" shouts another. Employees at Jackson Women's Health Organization are not the only targets. As a young woman makes her way through the gates, she, too, is confronted. "Don't do this!" a man shouts, "Don't kill your baby!". Among the picketers outside the clinic are young children who hold up signs with images of what appear to be babies' limbs covered in blood. Meanwhile their parents chant prayers as they follow patients along the fence that divides them. Rainbow-clad volunteers escort the patients, in an effort to protect them from the harassment. Amid the clamour, a man swerves a silver car, very slowly, along the street by the clinic entrance, with the passenger door open, up and down, slowly, again and again. Kim Gibson, a seasoned volunteer escort, calls it "stochastic terrorism". The protestors create an atmosphere in which anything could happen, she said. All the doctors who travel from other states to work at the clinic know their colleagues have been the targets of deadly violence before. Welcome to a normal Saturday outside Jackson Women's Health Organization, the abortion clinic at the heart of a high-profile US Supreme Court case on which a ruling is expected any day now. The court is to decide whether Mississippi can ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy - but its decision has much greater implications for millions beyond Mississippi. The outcome is widely expected to result in the reversal of Roe v Wade, a landmark 1973 decision that guaranteed the right to abortion across the United States. And here, in one of the poorest parts of the country, pro-choice campaigners say the consequences will be most acutely felt. Amanda Furdge was a struggling single mum when she found out that she was pregnant a second time. She was still breastfeeding her first baby and living with her parents having just escaped an abusive relationship. "I knew immediately I didn't want to or intend to be pregnant due to the struggles I've just gone through already," Ms Furdge said. "I didn't have the mental emotional capacity or the economic support that I needed to be raising two kids at the time". She is not the only one. On a drive through the Mississippi Delta, the rows of crops and vast green fields are only interrupted by the occasional family of steel silos. Then suddenly there will be a mansion. This is the land of the haves and have nots, with little but farmland in between. The Delta is the poorest region of the poorest state, with the lowest number of doctors per capita across the US. Wages are low here and health insurance is expensive. That combination has led to nearly 40% of the adult po[CENSORED]tion becoming saddled with medical debt. When they can't pay, clinics and hospitals close, and access to healthcare gets worse. These factors have a major impact on pregnancy outcomes, campaigners and health experts say. Mound Bayou is a small, now run down town in the Delta. The hospital here closed more than five years ago. There's one convenience store, a gas station, and half of the children here live below the poverty line. At the Delta Health Centre, its only obstetrician, Dr Nina Ragunanthan, says banning abortion will lead to an increase in maternal deaths as it will force people with high-risk categories to carry pregnancies to term. "I think what is sometimes missing in the general public discussion of abortion, is that abortion is a necessary part of reproductive care. Blindly banning abortion really puts women's lives at risk," she said. Moreover, government-funded care, or Medicaid, ends eight weeks after birth, while the health issues new mothers experience do not. Mississippi voted not to extend Medicaid beyond the eight weeks earlier this year. "I think that it is truly a no brainer for our state, to care for the women and children of our state. And it's a shame that our state wasn't willing to make that investment," Dr Ragunanthan said. Yet views on abortion from Mississippians themselves are sharply divided. Just an hour away from Mound Bayou, the town of Greenwood feels like another world. The houses are impressive with immaculately manicured lawns and the church equally so, with modern stained glass windows, a sound system outside, and air conditioning providing respite from the midday sun inside. Dr Terry McMillin, an obstetrician who sings in the choir, sees a ban on abortion very differently to Dr Ragunanthan. "I think there will be more children being given a chance at life. I don't think women's health care will be impacted" he said. "If we're telling people about Jesus and the laws of God, you know, maybe we shouldn't have sex outside of marriage, and we wouldn't have to make those difficult decisions." He seemed unconcerned that Mississippi is one of the states that decided not to extend Medicaid for new mothers. "That's certainly something that we may have to continue to look at, but I just don't see that as being a problem," he said. When asked if he was worried that if abortion is illegal, desperate young women would take matters into their own hands as they did before, he paused for a long time before saying: "Again, I just don't see that happening". Increasingly, women with unwanted pregnancies are turning to faith-led crisis pregnancy centres (CPC) for help - there are 30 of them in the state and only one abortion clinic. But often the goal of a CPC is to encourage women to stay pregnant and become a mother, rather than to help them end a pregnancy - something that critics say is not always disclosed. Ms Furdge turned to a CPC when she was pregnant with her second child, before she went to the Pink House to seek an abortion. According to Ms Furdge, the CPC she had gone to tricked her into thinking they would help her end her pregnancy. Instead, she said they kept her waiting for hours after she did a pregnancy test. Then the counsellor asked her to show them a picture of her one-year-old son. When she did, she said they held it up, asked her to look at it and then asked how she would feel if they killed him. She left upset and furious. Still determined to end her pregnancy, she eventually found her way to Jackson Women's Health Organisation, but was too far along to get an abortion. The clinic doesn't perform the procedure after 16 weeks, despite Roe v Wade establishing a right to abortion up to viability, which is around 24 weeks. "I knew then my only other option [was] to go somewhere else in another state. But I didn't have any transportation and didn't have any funds," she said. At Birthright CPC, about a 15-minute drive from the Pink House in Jackson, the walls of the counselling room were plastered with pictures of smiling babies, and a row of life-sized plastic foetuses at various stages of gestation are displayed prominently in the counselling room. In her nearly 30 years of volunteering, soon-to-be regional director Monica Walton has never thought someone should end a pregnancy, even deeply distressed girls who ended up here as a result of a rape. "I don't think there's such a thing as a child that shouldn't be born. I just think the world's a better place with more children and I understand that there are higher risks," she said. "But I also know that women who are in poverty do have healthy babies." Ms Walton said Birthright CPC would never trick or actively work to prevent anyone from getting an abortion. They just want women to be aware of all the options available. But when asked, she did not know how much an abortion would cost. There was no problem or hardship an unwanted pregnancy could bring that couldn't be solved through counselling and prayer, she said, though she disputed the suggestion that the centre forces religion upon anyone. Their motto, she said, was that "we don't talk to the girls about God, we talk to God about the girls". Outside Ms Furdge's small apartment, Titan and Mega, who are now eight and seven, play football on a disused tennis court, while Seven, her three-year-old, propels himself around on a tricycle with his feet, having not yet mastered the pedals. They seem to be happy, healthy little boys and Ms Furdge appears to be a devoted mother with an easy loving relationship with her young sons. When asked what she would say to someone like Ms Walton, who feels she has helped many women like her to have a child they thought they didn't want, she does not mince words: "No thanks to you!" she said, her voice getting louder. "No. Thanks. To. You!" She said she had been lucky, but others like her were less so. "What about the young woman who's dead? What about the kids who don't have a mom? What about the child who's being abused? What about the kids in the foster care system who are suffering? So yes, we have these children but we can't support them".

  8. Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition releases tomorrow on Steam(opens in new tab), and not a moment too soon. This remastering has been handled by Nightdive Studios, an outfit you could fairly describe as restoration specialists, while the original game was arguably the crown jewel of the late, great Westwood Studios, best-known for the Command & Conquer series. A realtime adventure game that is, amusingly enough, set in 2019 Los Angeles, Blade Runner tells its own story within the universe of the cult classic 1982 movie. At the time it was billed as having one of the richest environments ever created, and it still looks the absolute business. For those unfamiliar with Blade Runner, the title is what people who hunt down replicants (perfectly human androids) are called. The great innovation, and still one of the best ideas ever for a licensed game, is that each story runthrough changes which of the characters are replicants. This system features over 70 characters, all motion-captured, all with their own agendas, and includes actors from the 1982 film including Sean Young, James Hong, Joe Turkel, Brian James, and William Sanderson. The original is available on GOG, but this Enhanced Edition seems to have been handled with great care and subtlety. It's all about preserving the original's look and feel as much as possible (the press release calls it "a faithful restoration"). The official word on what the Enhanced Edition does to the original goes as follows: Reconstruction and upressing of original Westwood VQA Videos Cinematic Video frame rates updated from 15fps to 60fps Modern HD Display Enhanced “Knowledge Integration Assistant"" (KIA) and clue user interface Enhanced Subtitle support Modern gamepad support SMAA Anti Aliasing Anisotropic texture filtering Nightdive has been working on this one for a while: It was initially intended for release in 2020, but various complications (including no-one being able to find the original source code(opens in new tab)) saw delays. The studio is also currently working on the System Shock remake(opens in new tab). Westwood's Blade Runner brilliantly captures the mood of Ridley Scott's movie, and this is a welcome return. It's ambitious, maybe over-ambitious, unforgettable, and has an atmosphere like no other(opens in new tab).
  9. I live in the United Kingdom, and when a heatwave arrives, it can get surprisingly hot and humid for a country that's not known for its heat, and my iPhone bore the brunt of this recently. The small garden at my house gets the bulk of the sun across the day, so there's constant heat and sunshine as I listen to podcasts or scroll through Twitter or TikTok. However, as I was working on my MacBook Pro in the garden, I had forgotten that my iPhone was taking the full force of the sun on the glass table beside me, and the music suddenly stopped. I thought I was getting a call, and it wasn't until I held the phone that the temperature warning was shown. Granted, it's not just an iPhone that can suffer under extreme heat - there are Android devices and Windows laptops that also need to be operated under a cooler temperature. But when moments like these happen, there's a useful method to keep in mind to save the sun from damaging your electronics - something that I'll be doing next time. How to keep your device cool like I didn't Apple states that a good temperature for an iPhone is around 32° to 95° Fahrenheit / 0° - 35° Celsius. It's safe to assume that my iPhone was warm already due to the apps I was using at the time, and the heat from the sun only made this worse for the device. First of all, don't do what I did and suddenly place it on a shelf in the fridge. While this will certainly cool the device, it could take it too far in the opposite direction, or lead to condensation and water vapor build up inside. Instead, turn off the device and take it out of a case if it's in one. Put it in a cool area that's got plenty of airflow, and simply wait. We use our smartphones every day in some way, and while we manage them through their software to keep apps working well, for example, it also helps to keep them at the right temperature. While we're currently in warmer weather in the UK, across the world there are other places that will be heading towards that as the months pass. So make sure you keep your device at a cool temperature, and never put it in the fridge as I did.
  10. Today marks one year since AMD launched its FSR 'FidelityFX Super Resolution' technology and to celebrate the occasion, the company has published the source code of FSR 2.0. AMD FSR 2.0 'FidelityFX Super Resolution' Goes Open-Source Today Press Release: Today marks a year since gamers could try out AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution technology for themselves with our spatial upscaler – FSR 1. With the introduction of FSR 2, our temporal upscaling solution earlier this year, there are now over 110 games that support FSR. The rate of uptake has been very impressive – FSR is AMD’s fastest adopted software gaming technology to date. So it seems fitting that we should pick this anniversary day to share the source code for FSR 2, opening up the opportunity for every game developer to integrate FSR 2 if they wish, and add their title to the 24 games which have already announced support. As always, the source code is being made available via GPUOpen under the MIT license, and you can now find links to it on our dedicated FSR 2 page. Along with the FSR 2 API, and the full C++ and HLSL source code behind it, you’ll also discover our Cauldron-based sample and comprehensive API documentation to help you with your integration. We put a lot of effort into the documentation to help developers with their integrations as much as possible, so you can add FSR 2 to your game or engine and really achieve the highest possible quality. Please check it out! The version you’ll be downloading today from GitHub is v2.0.1, which reflects the ongoing improvements we’ve been making since you would have first seen FSR 2 in action earlier this year. FSR 2 supports both DirectX 12 and Vulkan, with plugins for Unreal Engine 4.26/4.27 and Unreal Engine 5 due very soon. It will also be available through the Xbox Game Development Kit. We’ve also updated the FSR 2 page here on GPUOpen – you’ll find new screenshot comparisons and updated content. Note that FSR 1 can still be exposed as its own upscaling option in addition to FSR 2 in-game titles. Both technologies have different characteristics which may be suitable for a wider range of platforms and user preferences. For example, our FSR 2 partner title DEATHLOOP exposes both. We’re really excited to finally get the source code, docs, and the sample out to developers, so head over to our updated FSR 2 page now to see what’s new!

  13. President Joe Biden on Wednesday called on Congress to pass legislation that would create a federal tax holiday on gas and diesel fuel for three months in an effort to lower prices at the pump. The pause would trim 18 cents off a gallon of gas and 24 cents for diesel at a time when the summer driving season is getting underway. The legislation would cost an estimated $10 billion, a senior administration official told reporters on a call. "I fully understand the gas tax holiday alone is not going to fix the problem," Biden said in remarks from the White House. "But it will provide families some immediate relief, give them a little bit of breathing room, so we continue working to bring down prices for the long haul." Biden asked Congress to make the temporary adjustment in a way that doesn't harm the Highway Trust Fund, which gets its revenue from fuel taxes. Many lawmakers, mostly on the Republican side of the aisle, have cited the trust fund as a reason they wouldn't back a gas tax holiday, though some congressional Democrats have also been critical of it. Biden said he is also calling on companies to increase refining capacity to lower prices in the long term, and gas station operators to come up with ways to bring down prices. “These are not normal times, bring down the price you are charging at the pump to reflect the cost you are paying for the product,” Biden said. “Do it now. Do it today, your customers, the American people, they need relief now.” The Biden administration will face an uphill battle to draw support in Congress for its gas tax holiday proposal. A number of Republicans have already come out in opposition to the plan, and even Democratic leaders have expressed some concerns. “Well, we tried. And the Republicans blocked it,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Wednesday during a weekly press conference.

  20. Amazon Web Services AWS has added new AI-based features to its contact center service, Amazon Connect. Amazon Connect is an omnichannel cloud contact center that serves businesses via an as-a-service model, enabling them to set up their own contact center, add agents from across the world, and engage with customers. The new tool, Amazon Connect Cases, is a new case management feature built into Amazon Connect that the tech giant claims makes it easy for contact centre agents to track, collaborate on, and resolve customer cases quickly. What does it offer users? Managing cases often involves numerous separate issues, including many different conversations with different agents. It’s common to use case management tools to deal with this sort of complexity but Amazon says that “adding case management tools introduces complex integration projects and costly development cycles that can take many months to complete”. Sidestepping these issues, Amazon Connect Cases apparently automatically creates a new case to track all related calls, chats, and tasks when whenever the customer makes the initial contact In addition, Amazon says IVRs and chatbots can also leverage case data from Amazon Connect Cases to drive personalized self-service interactions, helping improve customer feedback. When customers need to talk or chat with an agent, they are routed to the best available agent with the relevant case attached according to Amazon, resulting in improved average handle time and first-contact resolution. The new tool also enables agents to manually create and resolve cases and assigned tasks, view and add case data, and make internal comments in the agent application according to Amazon.AWS was also able to announce other new additions to its customer service portfolio. These included Amazon Lex, an artificial intelligence service that uses natural language models to help customers build, test, and deploy conversational voice and text chatbots for applications or services like Amazon Connect Amazon also announced another tool dubbed Amazon Connect outbound campaigns, which provides a way for businesses to contact large numbers of customers at once via voice, SMS, and email for communications like marketing promotions, appointment reminders, and upcoming delivery notifications without having to integrate third-party tools.
  21. AMD announced its Ryzen Embedded R2000 Series of processors. Key changes with this new generation include the doubling of the max CPU core count, and the inclusion of up to eight GPU compute units, providing up to 81% faster graphics than the prior generation. Though AMD targets these midrange SoCs at "industrial and robotics systems, machine vision, IoT and thin-client equipment," the previous series (introduced in 2019) was used in a wide range of consumer products, from the Atari VCS, to various mini PCs and SBCs. The second generation AMD Ryzen Embedded R2000 Series doubles the max CPU core count, providing up to four cores and eight threads. It also boosts graphics performance by as much as 81% compared to the R1000 Series in AMD's own tests. The graphics boost comes thanks to a move from a maximum of three Vega CUs to as many as eight CUs with R2000. Some of the biggest attractions for adopting the Ryzen Embedded R2000 Series are its rich and versatile multimedia intentions. The SoCs also have verified Windows 11 support (Windows 10 and Linux Ubuntu LTS are also supported), double the PCIe Gen3 lanes count to 16, and 2x SATA 3.0 and 6x USB ports (USB 3.2 Gen2 and 2.0), as well as claimed enterprise class security features. Putting the above specs into perspective, the new series moves from Zen to Zen+ CPU cores and sticks with Vega GPU cores, but has more of them. CPU clock speeds have been boosted across the range too, with TDPs holding firm in the 12-25W range. An exception to the steady TDP rule is the new top-end R2544, which will be configured from 35-54W, much higher than the last gen flagship. AMD will continue working closely with several existing embedded system partners that used the R1000, firms like Advantech (gaming and gambling machines), DFI, and Sapphire. With the beefed up graphics, we hope the new SoC is used in more mini/portable and fun-focused PCs. At Embedded World, which started today in Germany, AMD will be showcasing the Ryzen Embedded R2000 Series. One of the more interesting devices scheduled to appear is the Winmate fanless 13.3-inch FHD ruggedized laptop featuring the AMD Ryzen Embedded V2516 Processor, tablet mode, dual hot-swap battery system, and more.
