  1. An engineer who has spent the last decade working across web browser projects at Google and Microsoft has ridiculed the characterization of Apple as a champion of choice. In a new blog post(opens in new tab), Alex Russell argues that in reality the opposite is true; he claims Apple has deliberately wielded its influence in the hardware and mobile OS markets to “undermine browser engine diversity”. “Contrary to claims of Apple partisans, iOS engine restrictions are not preventing a ‘takeover’ by Chromium - at least that’s not the primary effect,” he wrote. “Apple uses its power over browsers to strip-mine and sabotage the web, hurting all engine projects and draining the web of future potential.” The case against Apple According to Russell, Apple stands in the way of diversity in the web browser market in a variety of ways, each of which he unpacks in turn. The main criticism is that the company continues to force developers to reskin its inferior WebKit engine if they want to put out a browser on iOS, a platform used by more than a billion people worldwide. Although Russell nods to the quality of the developers working on WebKit, he claims Apple has significantly underfunded the browser engine, which is maintained by a “skeleton staff” and is therefore incapable of competing with the likes of Blink (based on Chromium). The result, he says, is that third-party developers incur significant additional costs associated with building their apps for multiple engines and the iOS browser market is simultaneously starved of innovation. Mozilla, the maker of Firefox, is cited as having delayed its entry to iOS by “around seven years” as a result of Apple’s stringent requirements. “Today, Apple doesn’t compete outside its home turf, and when it has agency, it prevents others from doing so. These are not the actions of a firm that is consciously attempting to promote engine diversity. If Apple is an ally in that cause, it is only by accident,” said Russell. “Theories that postulate a takeover by Chromium dismiss Apple’s power over a situation it created and recommits to annually through its budgeting process.” Russell also took aim at the reluctance with which Apple introduced the ability to change the default browser in iOS. Only once antitrust regulators began sniffing around did Apple take these steps in 2020. In some cases, iOS would still override the new default when links were opened from within certain apps, which Russell says created a split browser experience that had a negative impact on users, developers, and publishers alike. “The pantomime of browser choice on iOS has created an anaemic, amnesiac web. Tapping links is more slogging than surfing when autofill fails, passwords are lost, and login state is forgotten. Browsers become less valuable as the web stops being a reliable way to complete tasks.” “By simultaneously taking a massive pot of cash for browser-building off the table, returning the least it can to engine development, and preventing others from filling the gap, Apple has foundationally imperilled the web ecosystem by destroying the utility of a diverse po[CENSORED]tion of browsers and engines.” TechRadar Pro has asked Apple for a response to Russel’s arguments.
  2. According to DigiTimes' sources, Taiwan PC industry sources say Asus and Gigabyte have doom-laden projections for the motherboard industry through the rest of 2022. According to the report, Asus and Gigabyte have approximately 70% of the motherboard market and they both expect sales volumes to drop by approximately 25% compared to 2021. The publication says this is due in part to the end of GPU bundling with motherboards along with demand shrinkage in the Chinese DIY market. An early warning sign of the coming slowdown manifested in the Q2 2022 motherboard shipment figures — larger than expected shipment reductions in Q2 portend weaker shipments going into Q3, and possibly into Q4. As for the root causes, the industry insiders say the end of the consumer GPU drought has hurt motherboard sales. GPU shortages allowed the likes of Asus and Gigabyte to promote motherboard sales by bundling them with GPUs, effectively forcing customers to buy their motherboards, thus leading to higher than normal sales volume. You might have also seen other components bundled with GPUs, too. During the depths of the GPU drought, people even bought and cannibalized whole pre-built PCs to get the GPU. According to DigiTimes, Asus expects its motherboard sales to fall ~24% and Gigabyte expects a ~27% decline this year. Moreover, the whole market will have dropped from ~40 million units to ~30 million units sold from 2021 to 2022. With the introduction of AMD Ryzen 7000 and AM5 motherboards later this year, not forgetting Intel's 13th-Gen Core processors and 700-series motherboard chipsets, one might expect the motherboard industry to enjoy a boost. However, according to DigiTimes' sources, the next-gen CPUs and motherboards won't stir PC DIYers or laptop buyers into action. Instead, they contend that other events, like the return of cryptomining, the end Russia-Ukraine war, or an easing of inflation, could help spur a turnaround. There are signs that cryptomining on PC GPUs is over for good this time around--or at least for the foreseeable future. Gamers have taken up some GPU sales slack from cryptominers, but it isn't enough to compensate for the sudden supply imbalance. As a result, we now see plentiful supplies of modern GPUs. We might move into GPU oversupply territory with mining organizations selling their gear combined with current-gen stocks being left unsold as we near the launch of next-generation products. All of this means that the motherboard makers probably won't be able to return to the days of selling motherboards forcibly by bundling them with GPUs, which is bad for them but good for us.
  3. The hundredth running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb concluded this weekend, but not before driver Levi Shirley unintentionally pulled off one of the most amazing stunts ever seen on the mountain in his first time ever running up the hill. Just a couple minutes into his effort, Shirley went off course, did a full roll, landed on his wheels basically unscathed, and managed to simply drive back onto the course and finish the race. Video from the official Pikes Peak International Hill Climb YouTube channel shows the onboard footage from the incident. In practice, Shirley had been told by observers that he was one of the most entertaining cars to watch, and his official run didn't disappoint, either. Shirley says the visibility in the lower section of the course was "next to nothing," due to fog and weather. He said he was having to drive the car at 30-40 percent pace due to track conditions. Shirley was racing in a 2014 Campbell Enterprises Single Seat IFS buggy sponsored by Yokohama Tire. The tube frame buggy took the impact like a champ, and the Geolander A/T tires made easy work of clawing back up the hillside. "This is probably the only car here that can … roll and keep on going." Shirley finished the course with a time of 13:44:532, having spent most of the climb entertainingly sideways.
  4. Milind Soman, who sets massive fitness goals, believes that everyone can achieve their goals — provided they are consistent and patient. The Paurashpur actor also says that to achieve desired results, one does not need to be hard on themselves. “People often ask me how I built my triceps, which I am showing off over here. There is no substitute for hard work but it doesn’t have to be that hard either!” he captioned an Instagram post in which he could be “showing off” his chiseled physique. Just one minute of push ups every day can get you started, and then you can progress to many varieties of push-ups, including hand stand push ups. You can make it as hard as you want,” he added, as she shared a video of him acing push-ups on a river bank. Sharing a tip, he continued, “Big tip — be regular and be patient!” Previously, the 56-year-old, who swears by a quick yet effective workout each day, was seen acing push ups: “50 in 50 at 56”. “Best thing to do at sunset!” he captioned the video shot by fellow fitness enthusiast and wife Ankita Konwar. Why should you do push ups? As a bodyweight exercise, push ups strengthen the whole body and help develop a strong core, wide chest, and shoulders. However, proper form is essential to avoid injuries. How to do? *To do a proper push-up, lie down on the floor face down and place your hands right under your shoulders. *Next, push your body one-inch off the ground as you inhale, then come back to the starting position as you breathe out. Your chest and back firm should be firm. Can everyone do push-ups? How deep you drop depends on you and your shoulder health, said Kenny Soru, certified personal trainer and professional bodybuilder, IBBF athlete, in an earlier interview. “Different people have different construction to their shoulder anatomy, as well as different injury and lifestyle histories, so bearing load in deep positions can cause varying amounts of discomfort. So, if you don’t have a history of shoulder injury and you’re pain-free, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t go to full range of motion when performing push ups, as long as it doesn’t hurt you,” said Soru
  5. A public US school was wrong to punish its football coach for praying at mid-field after his team's games, the Supreme Court has ruled. Joseph Kennedy's prayers were protected by the Constitutional right to religious expression and should not have been prohibited. The school had argued that the displays could coerce students of different beliefs into religious acts. The case has been considered an important test of the separation between church and state in the US. In a 6-3 decision, the conservative-majority court sided with Mr Kennedy, ruling that the school violated his right to "[engage] in a personal religious observance, based on a mistaken view that it has a duty to suppress religious observances even as it allows comparable secular speech". Writing for the majority, Justice Neil Gorsuch concluded that "the Constitution neither mandates nor tolerates that kind of discrimination". Mr Kennedy first had the idea to pray after high school football games when he was watching television and came across Facing the Giants, a 2006 film that featured a coach at a small religious academy who led his team to a state football championship after praying and emphasising Christian values to his players. He was considering whether to take a job as a coach at a high school in Bremerton, Washington - a town near Seattle - despite having little experience playing American football. His wife worked for the school district, and he had been offered the job based on his services as a US Marine, where he dabbled in the sport. He accepted the position, and for the next seven years prayed on the field after the games - sometimes alone and sometimes with players - apparently with little notice or controversy. That changed after a game in September 2015, when an opposing coach notified the Bremerton school principal of his actions. The school informed Mr Kennedy that his prayers could be construed as a school endorsement of religion, which run afoul of a long line of US Supreme Court cases that limited religious activities in public education. Mr Kennedy refused, and after a post-game prayer that October, became a public and media spectacle, with a crowd of spectators gathering on the field around the coach, the school placed him on leave. At the end of the season, instead of attempting to renew his one-year coaching contract with the school, he sued Bremerton for infringing on his constitutional right to freedom of religion and sought to make his case on a nationwide media tour. And so began a six-year legal battle that puts several aspects of the First Amendment to the US Constitution - which protects the free speech and religious exercise but also prohibits the "establishment" of a religion by the state - in tension. During Supreme Court oral arguments, Mr Kennedy's lawyer argued that he was simply a private citizen who wished to be able to express his personal religious views after his official duties as coach had concluded. The Bremerton school district was punishing him for those views and for the exercise of his speech rights, in violation of his constitutional protections. Bremerton's lawyer countered that Mr Kennedy's actions were much more than private prayer - they were disruptive group displays conducted on school property, which could have a coercive effect on students and athletes with different religious beliefs. America's top court has long upheld separation of church and state Legal line-drawing like this is a common undertaking for Supreme Court justices when considering sticky issues of constitutional rights and protections - and this case involved some measure of that. In 2000, a 6-3 majority of the Supreme Court ruled that student-led prayer before a high-school football game, broadcast over the school's public address system, was an unconstitutional government endorsement of religion. A slim 5-4 majority in 1992 held that a clergy-led prayer at a public-school graduation was inherently coercive and therefore unconstitutional. One of the foundational religious establishment cases dates to 1971's Lemon v Kurtzman, which held that laws must have a "secular legislative purpose" and set up a three-part test to determine whether they survived constitutional muster. The increasingly conservative court has largely abandoned this "Lemon test" in favour of more sympathy toward laws that permit or even support religious expression - and the court's decision in this case makes that move explicit. "This Court long ago abandoned Lemon," it said on Monday. Conservative religious freedom advocates had been calling for exactly such a move. "Religious liberty isn't a right to be weird in the corner," said Lori Windham, senior counsel with the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, after Monday's arguments. "It's a right to bring the deepest, most important truths to public life".

  9. Microsoft has released a new Windows 11 update that PC gamers in particular should install, as it fixes an annoying issue that caused games to sometimes crash. The update, known as KB5014668, is currently an optional update, which means it won’t be installed automatically. However, as Bleeping Computer reports(opens in new tab), it’s set to be included in an automatic update on the next ‘Patch Tuesday’, which is on July 12. According to Microsoft in a release announcement(opens in new tab) about the patch, this update “Addresses an issue that causes certain games to stop working if they use certain audio technology to play sound effects.” For PC gamers, any issue with Windows 11 that causes their game to crash and become unresponsive is particularly annoying, so it’s good to see Microsoft address a common complaint with this update, so if you have been experiencing crashes, it’s worth installing this update ASAP to see if it fixes it for you. The issue appeared to be primarily affecting people who use the XAudio API to play sounds. Other fixes The update also addresses an issue where upgrading to Windows 11 fails, as well as some Bluetooth connectivity problems. It also introduces a new feature, but don’t get too excited. Called ‘search highlights’, it “presents notable and interesting moments of what’s special about each day, —like holidays, anniversaries, and other educational moments in time both globally and in your region.” To us, that sounds a bit like yet more distracting icons and notifications on the Taskbar. Hopefully it proves to be more useful than that, but we wouldn’t suggest rushing to download KB5014668 just for that. How to download the Windows 11 KB5014668 update As this is an optional update, it won’t be installed automatically. So, to manually install it, open the Start menu and type in “Windows Update” and press return on your keyboard. Click “Check for Updates”, and you should see KB5014668 displayed. Select it, then click “Download now”. Windows will take care of the rest. If you don’t want to mess around with manual updates, then you should automatically get the update on July 12. It may be worth waiting until then to make sure any issues with the update are ironed out (hence why it’s currently optional), but if you’re a PC gamer that can’t play games because of this problem, that may be too long a wait. Also, make sure you check out our Windows 11 problems guide for more help if you’re having trouble with the operating system.
  10. Puget Systems recently tested AMD's new Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000WX CPUs in several professional applications and found performance to be substantially better in most workloads compared to the older Ryzen Threadripper 3000 series. Several Intel chips were also tested, including the Xeon W 3000 series and i9-12900K. In the multi-core heavy applications, Threadripper 5000 dominated the best Intel can offer today. Ryzen Threadripper 5000 is AMD's newly updated HEDT workstation platform running on AMD's Zen 3 architecture. Compared to Threadripper 3000, Threadripper 5000 offers significantly higher IPC performance, up to a 19 percent uplift, and a unified L3 cache per CCD which increases core responsiveness and performance in nearly all workloads. Core counts remain the same, but core frequencies have gone up. In Puget Systems' testing, the significantly quicker cores on Zen 3 Threadripper can make for considerable gains in heavily multi-threaded applications, despite core counts staying the same as the previous generation. This should be advantageous for all users since single-core heavy and multi-core heavy workloads can benefit from all of Threadripper 5000's performance improvements. Testing includes the 64-core 5995WX, 32-core 5975WX, 24-core 5965WX, 64-core 3995WX, 32-core 3975WX, and 16-core 3955WX. For Intel parts, tests were conducted with the Xeon W series (W-3365, W-3345, W-3335, and Core i9-12900K) for testing single-core heavy workloads. Starting with Premiere Pro, Puget Systems found the 5995WX, 5975WX and 5965WX all dominating the charts over AMD's Zen 2 counterparts and Intel's W-3345, and W-3335 processors. The only exception to this behavior was Intel's Core i9-12900K which scored the highest result, but the Zen 3 chips are behind by just a few percentage points. This shows us that Premiere Pro is a heavily single-threaded application and that AMD's Zen 3 chips can keep up even with Intel's Alder Lake CPUs. The Threadripper 5000 Pro chips took away the lead by a long shot in Adobe After Effects, beating all of Intel's chips and AMD's Threadripper 3000 chips by a long shot. Davinci Resolve shares similar behavior to After Effects, but all the chips are much closer to each other in performance. Nonetheless, all of AMD's Threadripper 5000 chips were ahead. Adobe Photoshop sees another win for Intel's Core i9-12900K, beating out everyone, including Threadripper 5000. However, the Zen 3 chips do take 2nd place, beating out Intel's Xeon W lineup and AMD's Zen 2 counterparts. Photoshop is notorious for being highly single-threaded, which is why Intel's more superior IPC on Alder Lake beat out AMD's Zen 3 chips. Adobe Lightroom Classic is somewhat an anomaly with the Zen 3 chips. The 24-core 5965WX and 32-core 5975WX easily take the win and beat all other chips tested. However, the 64-core 5995WX part takes up 5th place, as it was surprisingly outperformed by the previous-gen 32-core 3975WX and Core i9-12900K. Presumably, Lightroom's core management has issues with the 64 core model that isn't a problem in the lower core count SKUs. Other notable benchmarks include Unreal Engine and Blender, both of which are very heavy multi-core applications. Overall, Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 sees a 15% performance improvement in both benchmarks over all SKUs compared to the previous generation. However, even when we compare Intel's Xeon parts, the 32-core W-3365 still lags behind AMD's 24-core 5965WX. Overall, AMD's Ryzen Threadripper 5000WX CPUs are substantially quicker than Intel's workstation Xeons and AMD's Ryzen Threadripper 3000 parts, with a 15 to 45 percent performance improvement depending on the task. This makes Ryzen 5000WX a very viable solution in the workstation market and beats anything Intel can offer. The only exception is the Core i9-12900K in specific Adobe applications, which are single-core biased. It will certainly be interesting to see how these chips fare against AMD's own Ryzen 7000 when it arrives later this year.
  11. Jeep's largest vehicles: the new 2022 Wagoneer full-size SUV and more premium 2022 Grand Wagoneer, have been on the market long enough for consumers to be aware of their existence, but not long enough to erase confusion. Jeep considers them to be two different models, competing in different segments, but from the same Wagoneer family, To play up Wagoneer as a sub-brand, the SUVs don't even wear Jeep badging. Many consumers don't see the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer distinction. The most common misconception is that the Grand Wagoneer is a higher trim level, a more feature-loaded version of the Wagoneer. So, we asked Jeep's two main bosses, Christian Meunier who is Global President of the Jeep Brand, and Jim Morrison, head of Jeep Brand North America, how the new models are being perceived and received. What's In A Name? Why make them two separate models? Other automakers have separate mainstream and premium full-size SUVs, most compete in the segments with different nameplates and brands. GM has the Chevrolet Tahoe in the volume segment and the premium Cadillac Escalade. Ford has the mainstream Ford Expedition and upscale Lincoln Navigator. "Entering into the white space for us, we thought it was a good way to leverage one with the other," Morrison says. The more affordable Jeep Wagoneer targets the mainstream, offering feature for feature what those customers are looking for, says Morrison. Grand Wagoneer is directly aimed at the premium large SUVs, tailoring its features accordingly. "The separation is there by powertrains and by content," he says. "The differentiation is, feature for feature, powertrain for powertrain, based on what the competition have in each of those segments." Focus Was On Jeep Grand Wagoneer First The full-size three-row SUV was a long time coming. The Grand Wagoneer was in the plans for years but kept getting delayed as Jeep tended to other models that also needed to be launched. When the Wagoneer name returned after a 30-year hiatus, the focus was on the Grand Wagoneer, Meunier says. "That is the flagship. We wanted to re-establish the name and we've been very successful doing that." It is the better seller. And the top-of-the top, the Grand Wagoneer Series III is the vehicle that doesn't stay more than about three days on the lot, he says. "It is a good sign that we have been able to establish it this way." Meunier admits that Jeep needs to build more awareness at the lower Wagoneer level, the $60,000-$85,000 mainstream part of the segment. "This will take a little bit of time." Some of it is chronology. The Wagoneer base Series I was last to launch. They did not start rolling off the line until this spring, and the addition widens the scope for buyers of all pocketbook sizes. The executives say despite content differences, the Wagoneer shares the warm feeling that the Grand Wagoneer had in the past. And the mainstream Jeep is not a cheap version of the Grand Wagoneer, Meunier says. "It has the same bones and engineering and is well designed. It is a very good car. We made the Wagoneer look great and the Grand Wagoneer even greater." Long-Wheelbase Jeep Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer Coming Adding to the confusion, the Wagoneer sub-brand will add extended L variants this year—not to be confused with the three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee L which is a three-row version of the smaller Grand Cherokee. The executives say it does not matter if consumers are confused as to whether they are two different families or two trims of the same family. "As long as they both feel good, we're fine," Morrison says. In the U.S., the large SUV segment runs 70 percent mainstream and 30 percent premium. Jeep is skewing a bit higher than that with the Grand Wagoneer, Morrison says. And up to 20 percent of sales are top trim Series III. Jeep expects more incremental sales when the extended-wheelbase Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer go on sale later this summer. They come standard with the new high-output Hurricane engine that is an option on some short-wheelbase Grand Wagoneers. Eventually the base and high-output Hurricane engines will be the core powertrain and we expect the V-8 will eventually be discontinued (but the execs won't confirm that). Long-wheelbase models are expected to be about 30 percent of total sales and attract a completely different customer who needs the space. Buyers typically don't cross-shop short- to long-wheelbase, Morrison says. Stellantis chief financial officer Richard Palmer said Jeep sales were a major contributor to the company's 30 percent increase in net revenue in North America in the first quarter.
  12. Plant-based meat is all the rage as it provides an alternative source of protein to vegetarians and satiates the curiosity of people who always wanted to relish meat. Those who are fond of plant-based faux meat or are dependent on it for their daily requirement of protein are in for a surprise. New research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, has found proteins in plant-based meat were not as accessible to cells as those from the real meat. Lab tests have shown that proteins in substitutes do not break down into peptides as well as those from meats. The researchers created a model meat alternative made of soy and wheat gluten with the extrusion process. When cut open, the material had long fibrous pieces inside, just like chicken. Cooked pieces of the substitute and chicken meat were then ground up and broken down with an enzyme that humans use to digest food. In vitro tests showed meat-substitute peptides were less water-soluble than those from chicken, and they also were not absorbed as well by human cells. With this new understanding, the researchers say the next step is to identify other ingredients that could help boost the peptide uptake of plant-based meat substitutes. Is plant-based meat healthy? Plant-based meat is often thought of as being healthier than animal meats, because the plants used to make them are rich in protein and low in undesirable fats. To mimic the look and texture of the real meat, plants are dehydrated into a powder and mixed with seasonings. Then, the mixtures are typically heated, moistened and processed through an extruder. “Plant-based meat is healthier than real meat as it is low in calories and saturated fats. Besides, it contains coconut oil, vegetable protein extract, and beet juice,” Neha Pathania, senior dietician, Paras Hospitals, said. According to her, faux meat helps in lowering the risk of cardiovascular ailments, inflammation, and cancer. Also, it improves digestion, gut microbiome, bowel movement and helps in weight loss. However, she was quick to point out the disadvantages. “It is less nutritious and may not contain omega 3 fatty acids, protein, and other elements that are abundant in animal meat,” she said. Moreover, faux meat is highly processed and loaded with additives including artificial flavours, colours, and other chemicals, which are used to make the meat tastier and look real. She suggested vegetarians include grains, pulses, dairy products, eggs, soya, and tofu in their diet to get protein.
  13. The Russian war against Ukraine will inevitably dominate the summit of G7 nations in Bavaria. And the leaders of the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Japan face a difficult challenge. They are aiming to put on a show of unity and resolve over the war. In recent months, the Western alliance has shown signs of strain and fatigue. Some voices - particularly in France, Germany and Italy - have asked if it might not be better for the war to end, even if it came at the cost of Ukraine having to cede territory. A recent cross-Europe opinion poll suggested some voters put solving the cost-of-living crisis ahead of punishing Russia. Others argue about the need to salvage some kind of relationship with Russia in the future. Countries like the UK, Poland and the three Baltic States have been resisting these arguments, saying that any peace deal with Moscow that is not on Ukraine's terms would lead to further Russian aggression in the future. President Zelensky is likely to reinforce this argument when he addresses the summit virtually on Monday. So the G7 leaders are expected to try to use the summit to clear these muddy waters, promising more weapons to Ukraine and more sanctions against Russia. The idea will be to send a signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin that the West has the strategic patience to maintain its support for Ukraine, even if it faces domestic political pressure at home from voters concerned about rising prices. The problem for G7 leaders is they also face growing pressure to show they are tackling the global economic crisis. The soaring price of fuel and food is causing hunger and unrest across the world. And some countries are pointing the finger at the West. Many countries in the global south do not share Western concerns about Russian aggression. They see the conflict as a European war and seem unmoved by Western arguments that Vladimir Putin is acting as a colonial aggressor. And they blame Western sanctions - as much as Russia's invasion - for the rising costs of gas and oil, and the massive shortage of wheat and fertiliser. To try to resist this narrative, G7 countries are expected to use the summit to show they are acting to help countries round the world - with development aid, debt restructuring, climate finance, help finding alternative sources of energy and, of course, fresh efforts to get grain out of Ukraine's ports. That is why German has invited the leaders of India, Indonesia, Senegal, Argentina and South Africa to the summit, to hear their perspective and show the rest of the world the G7 is listening. So on the one hand, these Western leaders must show resolve to keep backing Ukraine, and on the other, they must show a readiness to fix the global economic shocks that some blame, in part, on the war. One senior US official described the dilemma thus: "How do we maximise pain on Putin's regime? How do we minimise spillbacks back to the rest of the world?" That is quite a circle to square.

  19. DICE is all-in on Battlefield 2042, with head Rebecka Coutaz saying there's "no time for anything else." The developer has largely existed to pump out Battlefield games over the years, but I'll always love DICE for Mirror's Edge and its sequel Catalyst. Nearly 14 years later, the game still holds up beautifully, from its slick minimalistic aesthetic to protagonist Faith's fluid movement. Nat called Mirror's Edge "the undisputed queen of parkour(opens in new tab)" and I couldn't agree more. The game was the antithesis of DICE's usual library and it was shocking how well it worked. Unfortunately, my hopes for a third freerunning adventure seem to be fading. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz(opens in new tab), Coutaz emphasised the team's desire to be "the first-person shooter powerhouse that DICE deserves to be," and that means leaving outliers Mirror's Edge tucked away. Season 1: Zero Hour arrives on June 9th! Unleash the unexpected and experience the new map Exposure, a new Specialist, high-tech stealth helis, and more! I mean yes, we already pretty much knew another Mirror's Edge wouldn't be coming anytime soon. Last year the EA France Twitter unintentionally drummed up a lot of hype, only for a follow-up tweet to clarify that it was just having a little bit of fun(opens in new tab). A little prank. It's still a shame for Mirror's Edge fans like me to know that we won't see anything soon. If you're a Battlefield fan, though, Coutaz is fully dedicated to pulling the game out of the gutter. BF2042 was received pretty negatively(opens in new tab) at launch and the rumour mill churned as leakers claimed that DICE had already drawn a line under the game and moved on(opens in new tab). Coutaz said that's not the case. "We couldn't do that to our players and we couldn't do that to ourselves," she said. "I don't want to use the word revenge because it's too strong in English, but you know, we cannot leave it like that. As I said, we owe it to our players." Coutaz said she wants "the team to be really proud about Battlefield 2042," adding: "We want DICE to be the number one spot for first-person shooter games in Europe, and one of the powerhouses in the world. It's a fabulous team. We're going to make magic together."
