February hasn't exactly been a bed of roses for Nvidia, as the company was forced to abandon its $40 billion bid to acquire Arm (which resulted in a $1.25 billion breakup fee). Today, we've learned that Nvidia is a potential victim of a ruthless cyber attack. According to reporting by The Telegraph, Nvidia's email systems and developer tools have been inaccessible for the past two days. At this time, it is unclear whether the attack itself forced these internal systems offline or if Nvidia proactively terminated access to quell the threat. According to its sources within the company, Nvidia's internal systems were "completely compromised." Unfortunately, there are no additional concrete details on the extent of the cyber attack or whether Nvidia was the victim of ransomware. We also don't know if confidential information stored on Nvidia's servers was accessed during the reported intrusion. For its part, an Nvidia spokesperson issued a brief statement confirming the report. "We are investigating an incident. We don't have any additional information to share at this time." The timing of the Nvidia cyber attack has raised a few eyebrows considering the military action carried about by Russia in Ukraine. There are suspicions that Russian entities could be targeting U.S. and Western companies for sanctions imposed by their respective countries. In a somewhat interesting turn of events, hacking group Anonymous has apparently declared [cyber] war against the Russian government. Nvidia is a massive American chip company that currently has a market cap of nearly $600 billion compared to $200 billion and $192 billion for rivals AMD and Intel, respectively. Last week, the company announced its fiscal Q4 2022 earnings and reported record revenue of $7.64 billion (a 53 percent increase). In addition, its full-year revenue came in at $26 billion, a 61 percent increase. The company is well-diversified, with products covering PC gaming, data center, artificial intelligence, supercomputing and general consumer markets (i.e., Shield TV). Nvidia also has contracts with the U.S. Military, aerospace, and automotive industries, broadening its reach within the United States and across the globe.

Microsoft has recently added a ‘feature’ to Windows 11 that will show a watermark message on the desktop if the PC it’s running on does not meet the system requirements, but there’s already a hack available to get rid of it. Windows 11 has some weird system requirements that has meant some perfectly powerful and relatively modern PCs are deemed unable to run the new operating system. However, it’s relatively easy to get Windows 11 to run on these devices anyway, and while it all seems to work fine, Microsoft has warned against doing this. The company now seems even more determined to dissuade people from running Windows 11 on unsupported hardware by adding a watermark that appears on the desktop that says “System requirements not met.” While this doesn’t prevent the PC from being used, it’s pretty annoying, so it comes as little surprise to find that someone at Deskmodder.de has already found a way to remove the watermark. How to remove the Windows 11 watermark If the watermark appears on your PC, here’s the steps you need to take to remove it. This process involves editing Windows 11’s registry, and if this is done incorrectly, there’s a danger your PC may not work correctly – so only do this if you’re confident, and follow the instructions exactly. Open up the Registry Editor by typing ‘Regedit’ in the Windows 11 search box. On the left-hand side, open up HKEY_CURRENT_USER then scroll down to Control Panel. You should see an entry called UnsupportedHardwareNotificationCache. Right-click it and select ‘Modify’ from the menu. Change the SV2 DWORD value from 1 to 0. Save and then restart your PC. If you can’t see UnsupportedHardwareNotificationCache, right-click on the Control Panel folder and select New > Key. Name it UnsupportedHardwareNotificationCache, then in the new folder right-click and select New > SV2 DWORD. Right-click it and select ‘Modify’ and change the value from 1 to 0. Once your PC restarts, the watermark should be gone. Analysis: Is this legal and should you do it? This hack is relatively straightforward, but does that mean you should do it? In the past, Microsoft used watermarks like this when devices were running a copy of Windows that hadn’t been activated (so possibly hadn’t been paid for). Removing a watermark to make an non-activated version of Windows appear to be activated would almost certainly be illegal – as well as ethically wrong. Things aren’t quite as straightforward here, as if you have an activated version of Windows 10, you should be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 11. However, part of the licence agreement is that you run Windows 11 on supported hardware. While you may get away with it for personal use where you just want to remove the watermark for aesthetic reasons, if someone were to use it to make a PC appear to support Windows 11 when it doesn’t (and then sells it on that basis), again, that’s likely to be illegal. It’s also worth considering that while this hack removes the watermark, it doesn’t mean the device now meets the Windows 11 system requirements. Microsoft does not recommend running Windows 11 on systems that don’t meet requirements, and it may mean that future updates, including important security fixes, won’t be compatible. For that reason alone, the safest thing you can do if you get this watermark is to uninstall Windows 11 and stick with Windows 10. Here’s how to fix Windows 11 problems

This week Intel introduced its Xeon D-1700/2700-series CPUs that offer up to 20 cores, AI and crypto acceleration, built-in Ethernet, and enhanced reliability. Intel's Xeon D-series processors are meant for servers that power the connected devices and services we use daily and combine serious performance with rich connectivity. Intel's new-generation Xeon D 'Ice Lake-D' system-on-chip family for infrastructure and edge servers consists of two separate product lines: the Xeon D 1700-series featuring from 2 to 10 cores and up to 15MB of cache as well as the Xeon D 2700-series offering from 4 to 20 cores and up to 30MB of cache. The CPUs feature two or four DDR4 channels supporting 256 GB to 1 TB memory; 16, 32, or 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes, 24 SATA ports and up to 100GbE of Ethernet throughput capability. The TDP of the new SoCs varies from 25W to 129W. In total, there will be 36 SKUs in the Xeon D-1700/2700 lineup. As a part of the Ice Lake family of processors, the new server-grade SoCs are powered by Intel's Sunny Cove microarchitecture and support the company's latest instruction set enhancements (e.g., AVX512VNNI for accelerating inner convolutional neural network loops used for AI/inference workloads), special-purpose accelerators (e.g., hardware-accelerated SHA encryption), and features (total memory encryption, SGX oversubscription instructions). While Intel's Xeon D 1700/2700-series processors do not offer extreme core counts or vast pools of memory supported that are required for performance-demanding workloads like running databases and other demanding applications, these SoCs provide enough performance for things like AI inferencing and edge servers; enterprise routers and switches; Virtualized radio access networks (vRAN); storage servers; and security appliances. While edge servers are largely an emerging application, other kinds of devices are seamlessly used by billions of people every day without even knowing it. "These processors power solutions that will infuse your network and edge with the computing, Ethernet connectivity, and security to handle the coming wave of demand at the edge," wrote Jennifer Panhorst, a vice presideent at Intel's data platforms group, in a blog post. "The Intel Xeon D-1700 and D-2700 family of processors enable scalability of software investment and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) with a durable, intelligent infrastructure." Intel says that over 70 companies plan to design servers around its Xeon D-1700 and Xeon D-2700 processors, including including Cisco, Juniper Networks and Rakuten Symphony.

Although Microsoft's .NET open source framework only just celebrated its 20th birthday the company is now pushing ahead with a new version, .NET 7. In a blog post, Microsoft says it is releasing .NET 7 Preview 1 alongside ASP.NET Core Preview 1 and EF7 Preview 1. ".NET 7 builds on the foundation established by .NET 6, which includes a unified set of base libraries, runtime, and SDK, a simplified development experience, and higher developer productivity," says Microsoft's Jeremy Likness. "Major areas of focus for .NET 7 include improved support for cloud native scenarios, tools to make it easier to upgrade legacy projects, and simplifying the developer experience by making it easier to work with containers." Open source forever and always If you use .NET for work (or pleasure), then it's worth reading the full blog for the details on what's new over .NET 6 as there's a lot. Some headline features is the addition of .NET Multi-platform App UI (MAUI), and new tools to make it easier to build cloud-native apps by simplifying the setup and configuration necessary to implement secure authentication and authorization, and also improving the performance of application startup and runtime execution. Developers will be able to easily and quickly upgrade their .NET 6 apps to the new platform, with Microsoft providing a range of support tools and services. After many years opposing open source, Microsoft is really leaning into making the space better. It's fair to say many developers were initially sceptical of Microsoft and it's commitment to making open source tools as the company, seeking to maintain its dominant position, opposed many developers and projects. But Microsoft's GitHub acquisition for $7.5 billion in 2018 helped the company turn a new page and win over sceptics. By maintaining .NET 7 – which is truly open source and cross-platform – so thoroughly (you could even say lovingly), Microsoft is doing its bit for the furtherance of computing. The intensifying competition among the leading Silicon Valley-based companies in the recent years lead to poaching well-known specialists as well as high-profile hires. But poaching happens not only in the U.S. Biren Technology, a developer of AI GPUs from China, has hired Yang Chaoyuan, who previously led Nvidia's R&D operations in Shanghai, China. Biren was established in 2019 in a bid to develop a GPU tailored specifically for AI workloads, such as training and inference. Designing a general-purpose GPU to address artificial intelligence and other emerging workloads is easier than developing an actual graphics processor for gamers since it doesn't require a very efficient memory subsystem or complex drivers, so there are multiple startups working on various AI accelerators these days. Biren reportedly planned to tape out its first chip using a 7nm process technology last year, though we do not know whether it actually taped out the processor. In order to significantly boost its future research and developing capabilities, Biren this week hired Yang Chaoyuan, the former general manager of Nvidia Shanghai, who has vast experience in GPU development. Yang Chaoyuan graduated from the University of California and brings Biren over 35 years of experience at companies like Nvidia and TSMC. Among his achievements is establishing Nvidia's first R&D center outside of the USA as well as his work in TSMC's R&D arm. At Biren, Yang Chaoyuan will serve as vice president as well as special assistant to the chairman, which looks like an important position. While he's not going to lead R&D at Biren, as an assistant to the chairman he might have an influence on strategic development of the company. Yang Chaoyuan is an important hire for Biren, but Biren's major challenge today might not be the absence of high-profile managers of engineers, but rather sufficient funding. Modern chips are notoriously expensive to design and these costs are only going to increase in the coming years. Biren Technology received $170 million in Series A funding in 2020, which is a lot of money. However, the development and implementation of a moderately complex FinFET-based 7nm chip costs around $300 million. Whether Biren can manage to create a competitive product remains the question.

Oppo Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition specifications have surfaced online ahead of the official launch which is set to take place this week. The Oppo phone is already confirmed to have an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC. Additionally, renders of Oppo Find X5 Lite have been leaked. The renders suggest the design of the upcoming phone — alongside its key specifications. The wireless charging details of Oppo Find X5 and Find X5 Pro have also been spotted on the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) website. As reported by Gizmochina, multiple tipsters on Weibo have suggested the specifications of Oppo Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition. Oppo Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition specifications (expected) The report mentions that the Oppo Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition would come with a 6.7-inch QHD+ (1,440x3,216 pixels) AMOLED E4 display, along with 120Hz refresh rate. The display is also said to be based on the low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) 1.0 technology. This is unlike the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC-powered regular Oppo Find X5 Pro that will come with the LTPO 2.0. Oppo is said to launch the Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition in a single 12GB + 256GB storage variant where the hardware will include LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. The Snapdragon variant, on the other hand, is speculated to have multiple variants, including the 8GB + 256GB, 12GB + 256GB, and the top-end 12GB + 512GB models. In terms of optics, Oppo Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition will come with a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 primary sensor with dual optical image stabilisation (OIS) and a telephoto shooter that will include the Samsung S5K3M5 sensor, according to the report. Oppo is also said to provide a 32-megapixel Sony IMX709 selfie camera sensor at the front. The phone could come with a 5,000mAh battery with 80W fast charging, 50W wireless charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging. It is also said to have Android 12 out-of-the-box, with ColorOS 12.1 on top. Additionally, the phone would include an IP68-certified build, NFC support, and dual stereo speakers. It is also said to have 163.7x73.9x8.5mm dimensions and 216 grams of weight. Oppo Find X5 Lite renders leaked In addition to the Find X5 Pro, tipster Evan Blass has shared the renders suggesting the design of the Oppo Find X5 Lite. The renders show the phone in a design that looks quite similar to that of the global Oppo Reno 7 variant. The Find X7 Lite is speculated to be just a rebadged Reno 7. The Reno 7 was originally launched in China in November. Global variant of the Reno phone debuted in India with a different list of specifications and design in February. The renders also show that the phone carries triple rear cameras, with a 64-megapixel primary sensor, hole-punch display, and a gradient finish at the back. The Find X5 Lite will have at least two distinct colour options to choose from, as per the renders. Oppo Find X5, Find X5 Pro wireless charging support The regular Oppo Find X5 and Find X5 Pro have also appeared on the WPC site, as spotted by MySmartPrice. Both phones are listed with 15W wireless charging support. While Oppo Find X5 has appeared with the model number CPH2307, Oppo Find X5 Pro has been listed with the model number CPH2305.

As Microsoft works on the first major update to Windows 11, codenamed Sun Valley 2, there's already some improvements to the File Explorer for Windows Insider users. As of Windows 11 Insider build 22557 and above - which allows you to sign up to features in testing that are not ready for a final release, you can have OneDrive, Microsoft's cloud service, integrated to the top right of a window, so you can see which files are synced and are being uploaded. Alongside this, folder previews are seeing a return, so you can look at what the folder contains without having to double-click it. You can also pin files to an Explorer window, as well as folders as before, making managing your content a lot easier than before. It's yet another example of Microsoft listening to feedback, such as drag and drop coming back to the taskbar, alongside folders to the start menu. But these features to File Explorer arguably shouldn't have disappeared in the first place, and would have avoided some unneeded irritation to users. Analysis: Restoring features like a yo-yo isn't a great experience for users Sometimes the little features make a big difference when you use a PC or Mac every day. Dragging and dropping to the Windows 11 taskbar is another example of a feature being in Windows 10, being absent in the launch of Windows 11, and being brought back in a forthcoming update. Apple has introduced and removed features for a later date before, but arguably only when there's been public beta programs for major software updates. A bunch of new features to the Files app and iCloud in iOS 13 were held back and weren't seen in a final version 5 months after they debuted. But Microsoft does this with public releases, and it's getting to the point of wondering - why? Folder previews and the drag and drop function of the taskbar are features that didn't need to be removed in the first place. They're the little features that help the user in their workflows, whether that's for a day job or gaming. But on the flip side of this upcoming build, seeing OneDrive integration into the File Explorer window, alongside pinned files are new features that are going to be welcomed by plenty of users. Its functions can help highlight the files that are most important to you, and it's encouraging to see Microsoft focus on the smaller features of its existing applications. However, if a Windows 12 does appear, one of the best efforts the company could do is to simply not remove the useful features that have no justification in doing so. Build on them, redesign them, but removing them in public releases will only irritate users. Via Windows Latest Our picks of the best laptops for 2022 so far
