After facing pressure from EU regulators, Adobe and design app Figma have agreed to mutually break up, costing the former a lucrative $20 billion deal. Adobe said in a recent statement that the companies are doing this because they cannot find a “clear path to receive [the] necessary regulatory approvals from the European Commission and the UK [CMA]”, or the Competition and Market Authority. It goes on to say they both “strongly disagree” with the findings, however, they believe it’s best for everyone that they put this messy situation behind them. What’s more, Adobe will pay Figma a reverse termination fee which, according to the US SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission), comes out to $1 billion. So, what happened? Let’s break it down. Adobe announced plans to purchase its competitor Figma for the aforementioned $20 billion back in September 2022 when its own UI (user interface) design platform, Adobe XD, failed. This move raised a lot of eyebrows from regulators. The CMA conducted an investigation into the deal earlier this year, claiming the acquisition would’ve resulted in a near-monopoly, stifling innovation in the design space. The organization then gave Adobe an ultimatum: either sell off Figma’s main product, Figma Design, or the purchase will be blocked. Adobe rejected the proposal and decided to end things on its own terms instead of fighting. Internet response The response from the internet has been overwhelmingly positive – ecstatic that the acquisition is dead. On Reddit, you have comments from people breathing a sigh of relief. On TheVerge’s report, one comment exclaims that it's a Christmas miracle. And you see the same thing on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter): a ton of celebration going on. But why? There are multiple reasons for this animosity, but in this situation, it’s mainly because they don’t want to see Adobe get any bigger. As a poster on X points out, they already have a “monopoly on almost all design tools” with UI design being the one field they don’t have control over. Had they been allowed to buy Figma, Adobe would essentially have the whole design market in its clutches with no worthy rivals. Analysis: Cost of doing business People have also criticized the brand for the cost of their services. Photoshop, for example, costs $23 a month, roughly $276 for the whole year. However, if you cancel your subscription after 14 days, Adobe will charge you an early termination fee that is 50 percent of the contract’s remaining balance. Designers were worried similar pricing would be forced on Figma’s platform. This is undoubtedly good news for users who didn’t want Adobe as the new parent company, but we’re not out of the woods yet. Figma CEO Dylan Field wanted the purchase to go through, saying he was "disappointed in the outcome". It’s entirely possible that some other titan of the industry eventually could pick up Figma without blowback from regulators. Comments on social media say they wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft one day made a bid. It’s certainly possible.

The busy East-West shipping routes that transit through the Suez Canal are again in jeopardy, putting pricing pressure on goods, including PCs and components, as well as many other essential products and commodities. Yemen-based and Iran-backed Houthis are said to be targeting cargo ships they believe are on the way to Israel. The aggression is aimed at Israel-bound ships in a show of support to Hamas, say the Houthi perpetrators. However, there are multiple reports of ships with no links to Israel being targeted by drones and missiles. Tech publication TechPowerUp also reports that its sources in the Taiwan PC supply chain indicate that "products are on some of these ships that are now stuck waiting for naval escorts through the area." According to the latest BBC analysis, “severe disruption” of global supply chains is expected due to the ongoing Red Sea attacks. Many of the world’s biggest shipping companies, like MSC, Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, ICT, and Evergreen, are thus making plans to re-route or actively re-routing ships. Attacks on shipping in the Red Sea have steadily increased since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war in October. Rerouting these massive container ships isn’t trivial. For example, a typical electronics consignment from Taiwan to the Netherlands will take around 25 days via the Suez Canal (which links the Red Sea and the Mediterranean). If, instead, the ships are routed past the notoriously choppy ocean by the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, the journey is typically 34 days. As well as the impact on time, the journey distance is about 35% greater, with all the extra costs involved. Despite the extra time and associated costs, reports say that some big shipping companies have already started to actively re-route via the Cape of Good Hope. Some shipping companies are resisting changing their routes, though. Reports suggest some ships are carrying guards and various defenses to see them safely through the 20-mile-wide pinch point in the Red Sea. We also read that some vessels are turning off their transponders or falsely reporting positions as they navigate the most dangerous areas of the sea. Security action from a joint task force called Operation Prosperity Guardian may also convince some shippers that the long way around Africa isn’t entirely necessary. Naval forces from countries including the US, UK, Canada, France, Italy, Bahrain, Norway, and Spain will help keep the waters safe and navigable. A meeting of over 40 countries on Tuesday may precipitate an even more comprehensive force to secure traffic. Shipping costs are still much lower than in 2021 In 2021, Evergreen’s 1,312-foot long and 220,000-ton Ever Given reportedly caused “the world's heaviest traffic jam.” The incident blocked the Suez Canal for just five days, but during the height of the Covid, the shipping crunch cost billions due to the delays. The good news is that shipping costs are still “much lower than last year, and are far below the levels seen in 2021,” according to the previously linked BBC analysis. Nevertheless, increases in prices of commodities like oil can push up the prices of a very wide range of goods and drive higher inflation.

Windows 10 has now got the Copilot AI with the latest patch for the release version of the OS – or at least some users have. The cumulative update for December, which just arrived (patch KB5033372), debuts Copilot (in preview) on the desktop, as well as applying the usual security fixes, and a few extra features besides. Copilot’s icon is positioned on the taskbar, at the far right in the system tray. However, if you don’t see the AI assistant on your taskbar after installing KB5033372, that could be due to a slight complication for Windows 10 users regarding the interface, which we’ll come back to shortly. Or it might be simply because this is a limited rollout of the AI to begin with. As Microsoft notes: “[Copilot] is available to a small audience initially and deploys more broadly in the months that follow.” If you do see the Copilot icon, and don’t want the AI on your desktop, the good news is that you can right-click to disable it, as Windows Latest reports. The December update for Windows 10 also gives the News & Interests panel more screen real-estate, and it introduces another feature from Windows 11 aside from Copilot. That’s the ‘Get the latest updates as soon as they are available’ option, which as the name suggests, is a way to offer up your PC to get updates as soon as possible – with the catch that you may experience wonkiness as an early adopter. But more choice is always good in our book. Analysis: Sidestepping Copilot Copilot is the major move here, of course, but what about that mentioned interface issue? Well, there’s a problem for those who’ve moved their taskbar away from the bottom of the screen, and to the side, in Windows 10. Admittedly, that’s a niche set of users who are seriously into their desktop customization, but still, there are people who will likely be annoyed by this. Microsoft informs us: “Copilot in Windows (in preview) is not currently supported when your taskbar is located vertically on the right or left of your screen.” The obvious workaround, as Microsoft points out, is to move your taskbar back to the bottom of the screen (or the top). If you’re a hardcore customizer, though, relocating your taskbar from its preferred vertical position at the sides will probably mess with your mojo and workflow in a meaningful way. At any rate, Microsoft tells us that it’s working on resolving this hiccup with the UI, and will keep us updated as to the progress on that fix. The reason this isn’t a problem in Windows 11, by the way, is that you can’t move the taskbar away from the bottom of the desktop (much to the chagrin of those mentioned keen desktop tinkerers). At the moment, Copilot is only on a limited rollout anyway, and it could take months to arrive on any given Windows 10 PC – but at least the process has now kicked off. You’re not missing that much, mind, given the AI’s current condition, where it’s basically just a glorified version of the Bing chatbot (now renamed Copilot itself). It can mani[CENSORED]te some Windows settings, but not many to begin with – that functionality will be ramped up as the months pass, though.

AMD and GPU Open released the FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3) source code today. AMD promised to make the FSR 3 source code available when the first games featuring the latest version of its super resolution technology were released in September. However, we’ve known about the main feature of FSR 3, its AFMF frame generation technology since November 2022. If you are a developer, tinkerer, or just curious, the new code can be found on the FSR 3 branch of the FidelityFX-SDK on GitHub. The AMD FSR 3 integration guide PDF published by GPU Open might also be useful. The full source code for integrating FSR 3 features into DirectX 12 and Unreal Engine 5 apps, two of the most po[CENSORED]r modern PC gaming APIs, is provided in the download. The diagram below clearly and concisely illustrates how FSR 3 interfaces with a game engine. Of course, FSR 3 isn’t just about frame generation; it brings forth all the FSR 2 temporal upscaling technology and more. A bullet point list of the key features of FSR 3 is provided below: Frame generation, with interpolated frames for smoother motion Resolution upscaling, claimed to be near-native quality in scaling factors from 1x to 9x Latency reduction, delivering reduced latency with improved frame pacing Anti-aliasing, providing high quality AA, with FSR 3 capacle of replacing TAA in any game frame and offering a new ‘Native AA’ mode Optimized, for good performance on mid-to high-end GPUs and either GPU or CPU limited situations Cross platform, working on GPUs across brands, and multiple platforms (e.g. PC, Xbox). Moreover, AMD and GPU Open assert that FSR 3 is easy and intuitive to integrate into a game or app, especially one that previously used FSR 2. The open source (MIT License) also facilitates easy development, with the provided DX12 and UE5 code samples. GPU Open also highlights some important things to consider when using FSR 3, and this information is helpful to gamers so they can understand how / when to use FSR 3. Firstly, for gamers who want to use FSR 3 for upscaling without any frame generation tech – this is OK, and it can function just like FSR 2. Secondly, it is advised to use FSR 3 technology only when it can achieve 60 fps+. As a guide, GPU Open says that if your PC can’t hit 30 fps native at the selected resolution, you should avoid using FSR 3 upscale. Lastly, gamers should use an in-game frame limiter if one is available and/or use V-Sync On. AMD’s FSR 3 launched with just two supported games, Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum, but a newly updated list has been provided alongside this source code release (see above). Hopefully, this open-source release will also build momentum with FSR 3 adoption.

Apple's purported iPhone 16 series of smartphones might feature a new external design, according to a report. Mockups of the rear and side of the successor to the iPhone 15 created by MacRumors show different design options reportedly considered by Apple for the handset that is expected to debut next year. The iPhone 16 could feature a redesigned camera module with a capacitive capture button, along with an Action button — the latter replaced the mute switch for the first time on the iPhone 15 Pro models. MacRumors' mockups of the iPhone 16, created from 'early pre-production' internal design details from Apple, show three different designs for the upcoming handset. The first one shows the handset with a vertically aligned rear camera layout, similar to the iPhone X. Apple hasn't used a vertical camera layout since the iPhone 12, so changing the layout on the iPhone 16 will help the handset stand out from its predecessors. The first model in yellow also shows the iPhone 16 equipped with a unified volume rocker, and an Action button. A second mockup showing the phone in pink shows the phone equipped with mechanical volume buttons and a camera module that resembles the iPhone 12. A third model shows the purported phone in a black colourway that includes the same camera layout and volume as the pink model, but with a larger Action button, and a capture button — both of these could be capacitive instead of mechanical, according to the report. Apple is reportedly planning to include the Action button on all its iPhone 16 models next year, according to recent reports. This year, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max featured the programmable button, but all four models featured the Dynamic Island that arrived on the iPhone 14 Pro models last year. It remains to be seen whether Apple will launch the iPhone 16 with capacitive buttons for the Action button and the dedicated camera button. Apple was previously expected to equip the iPhone 15 series with capacitive buttons, but shelved its plans due to development challenges, according to reports. As it is considerably early in the development cycle, it is likely that Apple's purported plans for the iPhone 16 could also change or evolve before the designs are finalised.

Windows 11 just got its latest cumulative update which applies a bunch of fixes to the OS, along with bringing improvements to the Copilot AI. It’s Copilot that’s the main focus here, with Microsoft introducing the AI assistant to the Alt+Tab function in December’s update (patch KB5033375). In other words, when you use that to tab through the various running apps on your PC, Copilot will be one of those running processes. On top of that, Microsoft has made it so that you can use Copilot across multiple monitors. You can invoke the AI on any monitor now (with its taskbar icon), and by using the Windows key + C shortcut you can bring up Copilot on the last display it was present on. Another smaller tweak, but a very useful one, is that the December update makes Copilot open faster when you click its icon on the taskbar. It’s always good to have tasks happen in a speedier fashion, of course. A bug which previously meant that the Copilot icon on the taskbar wasn’t showing as active when the AI was in fact running has also been fixed. Elsewhere, KB5033375 solves a widely reported problem whereby Narrator (the screen reader feature) failed to work during the installation process for Windows. Another interesting move here is a tweak for the Dynamic Lighting hub, and we’re told Windows 11 now reduces the amount of power it uses on your PC. Savings on wattage are always welcome, of course. As mentioned at the outset, there are a bunch of security fixes applied in the December update, and general troubleshooting work besides. Check out the support document for KB5033375, or rather, for the same update in preview (which is where the tweaks are listed in full – that preview arrived earlier in December, just over a week ago). Analysis: testing the waters The slight catch with the major two additions for Copilot here – the support across multiple monitors, and within Alt+Tab – is that not everyone will get them to begin with. Only a small subset of Windows 11 users will benefit off the bat, ahead of a broader rollout which will be ongoing. It’s likely that this will be the approach for much of Microsoft’s Copilot tinkering, testing the waters in a limited way before a wider deployment is initiated. We can expect Microsoft to be constantly improving Copilot every month, pretty much, now that the AI has rolled out to the general public in Windows 11. It’ll without doubt be the focus for Microsoft going forward into next year – and the potential release of next-gen Windows in 2024 (which may or may not be Windows 12).

Linux is finally removing support for Intel's Carillo Ranch motherboards (first added in 2006) in a recent patch, according to Phoronix. Linux doesn't typically remove support for hardware that's simply old, however: The Carillo Ranch drivers are being removed because it seems Carillo Ranch just... never came out. It seems that way, anyway. Carillo Ranch has virtually no digital footprint; it's nigh impossible to find any info on it that doesn't pertain to its driver support being yanked from Linux. As far as we can tell, Carillo Ranch was supposed to be a platform/motherboard for EP80579 embedded CPUs, which combined a Pentium M core known as Tolapai with the Vermillion Range chipset and a memory controller. Linux removed two Carillo Ranch drivers: one made by Tungsten Graphics (which was acquired by VMWare in 2008) and one made by MontaVista. Interestingly, if you Google "Intel Carillo Ranch" in quotes, it redirects you to "Intel Carrillo Ranch," and the sole result takes you to MontaVista's contact form, which has a prefilled enquiry: "I would like to hear more about the Board: Intel Carrillo Ranch Pentium M compatible Vermillion Range." According to the patch, Carillo Ranch either never came out, or, if it did, no longer exists. But that might not be the case? The drivers at one point refer to Carillo Ranch as "LE80578," and searching for LE80578 on Google returns tons of listings for HP Laserjet printers advertising an 800MHz LE80578 processor. What's strange about this is that EP80579 is supposed to be the CPU, while LE80578 is just the motherboard. Intel's ARK database has data for its EP80579 family but nothing concerning LE80578 motherboards or processors. Whatever the case may be, these Carillo Ranch drivers seem to be vestigial at best (and have possibly been so for the past 15+ years), and realistically are not used today. The drivers' removal will likely go unnoticed by anyone not reading this article, but on the off-chance this does screw up someone's computer, somewhere, maybe we'll hear about it and figure out what Carillo Ranch (Carrillo Ranch?) really is.
