Google's Area 120 incubator has launched a new website builder and ecommerce platform called Qaya which is now available in beta in the US. According to a new blog post, co-founder and GM of Qaya, Nathaniel Naddaff-Hafrey came up with the idea while working from home during the pandemic after spending time with creators who said it was difficult and time consuming to build an online business around their content. This led to the creation of a new product called Qaya which provides web storefronts for creators that want to sell products and services directly to their audiences. The company has a small and agile team that believes creators are the next generation of entrepreneurs. As the CEOs of their own businesses, they require the same commercial tools as any successful founder. Building your creator businesses Qaya first began live testing its new service in early 2021 and since that time, the company has learned a lot from the creators on its platform, their fans and other creator economy projects. Creators on Qaya can sell everything from workout guides to photo filters, productivity templates, knitting patterns and more. The company currently supports both pay-gated and free products with new features like tipping, subscriptions and other monetization types coming soon. By signing up for Qaya, creators can use the service as the hub for all of their business activity across the web. Many link to their storefronts from their social media bios and showcase digital products they upload or products and services hosted on other sites. The company provides all of its users with a custom yourname.channel or qaya.store/your-name domain with payment functionality built-in. At the same time though, Qaya has also developed customer management and analytics tools that creators can use to connect with their fans and understand sales and content performance. The company has also started to integrate with other Google products including YouTube's Merch Shelf and eligible YouTube creators can now promote products from Qaya directly below videos on their YouTube channels. Qaya is currently in beta in the US though the company hopes to expand to other countries soon. We've also highlighted the best web hosting, best ecommerce hosting and best website builder

Samsung Galaxy A53 5G is thought to have been spotted on benchmarking website Geekbench, suggesting the smartphone's processor and memory specifications ahead of the launch. The listing for the smartphone SM-A536U shows it could sport an in-house Exynos processor under the hood instead of a Snapdragon SoC. Previous leaks of the smartphone have revealed the successor to the Samsung Galaxy A52 could feature a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and in-display fingerprint sensor, a 64-megapixel quad-camera setup, and a 5,000mAh battery. The upcoming Samsung A-Series smartphone is listed on Geekbench under the model name SM-A536U, and appears to be the US variant of the handset, according to a report by SamMobile. The Geekbench entry lists the smartphone's motherboard as "S5E8825", which suggests that Samsung Galaxy A53 could be powered by the octa-core Exynos 1200 SoC, which features two high-performance cores at 2.40GHz and six cores capped at 2.0GHz. According to the Geekbench listing, the smartphone is equipped with 6GB of RAM. According to the Geekbench listing, Samsung Galaxy A53 5G has scored 690 points in the single-core CPU benchmark test, and 1,848 points in the multi-core CPU benchmark test. The smartphone is tipped to feature the ARM Mali-G68 GPU, which was launched back in May 2020. However, Samsung has not yet revealed any details of this upcoming smartphone. Previous leaks have tipped Samsung Galaxy A53 to launch with a 64-megapixel quad-camera setup, along with a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display, with a 120Hz refresh rate. The smartphone is expected to come with 5G connectivity and come with an in-display fingerprint scanner, like its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy A52. The smartphone could come with a large 5,000mAh battery, and a recent report states that the production for the smartphone has already begun. Samsung Galaxy A53 5G is tipped to launch as the successor of the Samsung Galaxy A52 smartphone that was launched with the Snapdragon 720G SoC paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The phone is equipped with a 64-megapixel quad-camera setup and a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The smartphone is equipped with a 4,500mAh battery with 25W fast charging support.

Microsoft is readying an update for collaboration platform Teams that will supposedly help make video calls feel more natural in the world of hybrid working. As per a new entry in the company’s product roadmap, Microsoft Teams users will soon benefit from an additional video call layout, called Front row. “Front row is a new layout that enables better hybrid meetings,” explained Microsoft. “It brings remote participants to eye level with participants in [conference] rooms and adds additional data like chat to give in-room users better context of what’s happening in the meeting.” The new layout is still under development, but should be available to all Teams users via the layout picker by the end of January. Microsoft Teams calls Since the start of the pandemic, vendors of video conferencing services like Teams, Zoom and Meet have fought to optimize call layout for maximum engagement and productivity. Until now, the emphasis has been on creating new layouts that help remote workers present more effectively. In June, for example, Microsoft launched two new layouts for Teams, called Reporter and Side-by-Side. The former positions content above the presenter’s shoulder, as if they were a news anchor, and the latter displays content next to the presenter’s video feed. On the side, there has also been a race to see who can support the largest number of video call participants on-screen at once. Currently, Teams and Zoom lead the way with massive 49-person gallery layouts. Now, however, Microsoft appears to have turned its attention to augmenting its collaboration platform for hybrid working, whereby employees split their time between the home, office and any other location. A major priority among businesses is to ensure meetings remain equitable when half the participants are in the room and the other half are dialling in remotely. According to Microsoft, a small change like the new Front row layout can help create “a more inclusive environment” and head off some of these potential issues. Get more out of your video calls with the best business webcams and best business headsets

According to WindowsCentral, Microsoft is planning on replacing the old Command Prompt we know today with the new Windows Terminal as the default command line app in Windows 11 by 2022. To make the new transition smooth, Microsoft will be testing the changes from its Windows Insider Program before rolling it out the door to everyone. Microsoft officially unveiled the new Windows Terminal in 2019, and it was shown to be a big upgrade over the current Windows Console Host command line we use today. The new Terminal is packed with new features designed to make the command line experience even better, the best of which is a modernized rendering engine with DirectX GPU acceleration. The Windows Terminal is designed to be your one-stop-shop for accessing all your command line applications, so whether you want to use the command prompt, or Putty, or a Linux command line, you can do it all from the Windows Terminal. Other cool features include tab support, transparency effects, and split panes for using multiple command lines in a single window. There's also an entire customization window where you can change the Terminal's font, font size, colors, and more to give the Windows Terminal a very personalized look. The Windows Terminal is available now for download from the Microsoft Store and supports both Windows 10 and Windows 11. You can even choose the Windows Terminal to be your default command-line application right now. It just won't happen automatically until 2022 when Microsoft finally makes that change -- for Windows 11 only.

Samsung Galaxy S22 series seem to be inching closer to its launch as a video has now surfaced online which shows the design of the three flagship smartphones, again. The design of the three non-foldable Samsung Galaxy flagship smartphones shown in the video is similar to the ones which appeared in earlier reports. The top-of-the-line Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, tipped to launch as the Galaxy S22 Note, is shown with a flatter design when compared to the vanilla Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+. In the video shared by notable tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (@OnLeaks), the design of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 series is fairly visible. The Samsung smartphones are said to be dummy models, but unlike the dummy models of the Google Pixel 6a and OnePlus 10 Pro which were seen as rough aluminium slabs, this video shows the smartphones in their final form. The Galaxy S22 series has been tipped to launch on February 8. The design of the vanilla Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy S22+ looks similar to the design of their predecessors, Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+, respectively. However, there appears to be slight differences in the design of the two Samsung flagship series. The upcoming Galaxy S22 series is shown with a flatter-looking metal frame — similar to the iPhone 13 lineup and a glossy back finish. However, it is not confirmed whether the actual production models will get the gloss back finish. Apart from this, the two Galaxy S22 smartphones' edges seem to be more rounded-off than the Galaxy S21 series, as seen in a previous report. The real difference between the Galaxy S21 series and Galaxy S22 series is apparent in the design language of their respective top-tier variants — Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy S22 Ultra. As previously seen in a few reports, the top-of-the-line Galaxy S22 smartphone will have a design language similar to the now-defunct Galaxy Note series. The video shows the smartphone with a dedicated S Pen slot, a curved display, and a squared-off frame. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has also been tipped to launch as the Galaxy S22 Note. As with all leaks, this should also be taken with a pinch of salt. Samsung hasn't provided any official mock-ups of the smartphone, so it is likely that these dummy models were created by a third-party designer from the renders that have surfaced online till now.

Among the 100m+ users that did install an extension this year, adblockers were the most po[CENSORED]r with Adblock Plus taking the top spot followed by uBlock Origin. Across the span of 2021, Adblock Plus had an average of over 6.1m daily users while uBlock Origin averaged just over 5m+ daily users over the course of the year. While Adblock Plus led the charge at the beginning of the year, uBlock Origin was able to close the gap and if current usage trends among Firefox users continue, it may take the top spot in early 2022 according to a new blog post from Mozilla. One of the reasons users choose Firefox as their preferred browser is to further protect their privacy online. While adblockers can stop ads from following you around the web, other po[CENSORED]r extensions this year that protect against invasive tracking include Mozilla's own Facebook Container with 1.7m daily active users and Ghostery with 1.1m daily active users. Firefox Recommended Extensions In addition to putting out a list of the most po[CENSORED]r extensions each year, the Firefox Recommended Extensions program is a curated list of third party extensions that meet Mozilla's highest standards of security, utility and user experience. For those who often find themselves drowning in a sea of open browser tabs, Tab Stash may be the perfect extension as it adds a toolbar button that when clicked, saves all of your open tabs as temporary bookmarks. If you're using Firefox Sync, the service will automatically show your Tab Stash bookmarks synced to other devices. Another interesting extension highlighted by Mozilla is Stylebot. This extension gives you the power to dramatically alter the way any website looks from font sizes to color schemes to content layout. Perhaps you're intrigued by vertical tabs in Microsoft Edge? Then the Sideberry extension can be used to organize your open tabs in a cascading “tree” tucked away to the side of your browser. While web browsers have certainly come a long way, extensions allow you to further customize their look and fell as well as their functionality which can help you be more productive or just have a better browsing experience overall. We've also rounded up the best browser, best VPN and best proxy services

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK), the world's largest independent maker of hard drive platters, has confirmed that it developed media featuring MAS-MAMR (microwave assisted switching-microwave assisted magnetic recording) technology. Eventually, this technology will allow Toshiba, one of the key customers of SDK, to build HDDs with capacities of over 30TB. MAS-MAMR is essentially a superset of MAMR technology, which alters magnetic coercivity of hard drive media using microwaves. With MAS-MAMR, coercivity is altered even more significantly, allowing even narrower tracks and thus increased areal density. The technology was co-developed by Showa Denko (media with a brand-new magnetic), TDK (read/write heads equipped with dual spin-injection-layer), and Toshiba (drives). The three companies did not disclose the actual areal density, but they indicate that MAS-MAMR will enable Toshiba to build HDDs with over 30TB capacities. They also didn't say how many platters these drives will feature. Changing platters and read/write heads is a big deal for HDD makers. Typically, companies prefer to change one crucial component of their drives, but with heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR), Seagate had to significantly alter the architecture of its hard drives. Apparently, Toshiba will have similar challenges with MAS-MAMR. Meanwhile, the good news is that the technology seems to scale, so it will be used for years to come. Toshiba has already started shipments of MAMR-based 18TB HDDs for nearline and enterprise-grade NAS applications. MAS-MAMR platters and heads will be used for its second-generation MAMR drives. Unfortunately, Toshiba does not say when such drives will hit the market. Perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) is running out of steam, so manufacturers need to use various energy-assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) technologies to tangibly increase the capacities of their hard drives. Seagate was first out of the gate with HAMR, but currently such HDDs are only available to select customers. By contrast, Western Digital (or rather its HGST division) bet on MAMR initially, but then chose to use energy-assisted PMR (ePMR) for commercial hard drives last year. Recently, Western Digital implied that ePMR is a good enough technology to increase HDD capacities for years to come, before HAMR takes over, which left us wondering about the fate of MAMR. While we still have no idea regarding Western Digital's MAMR plans, it looks like Toshiba, Showa Denko, and TDK believe that MAMR and MAS-MAMR technologies have strong potential for capacity growth.
