China’s rapidly aging po[CENSORED]tion will be an obstacle to its economic growth, which will be surpassed by the U.S. in the next several years, according to a top demographer. Fu-Xian Yi, a specialist in reproductive science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an expert on China’s demographics, pointed out that the share of the Chinese po[CENSORED]tion that’s over 65 had jumped to 15.4% in 2023 from 7% in 1998. “Historically, no country has managed to achieve 4% growth in the subsequent 12 years after the elderly made up 15% of the po[CENSORED]tion,” he wrote Wednesday in Project Syndicate. “The average growth rate for high-income countries during this period is just 1.8%.” While the U.S. remains the world’s largest economy, its growth rate has lagged China’s, even as the No. 2 economy has slowed sharply in recent years. Last year, China’s GDP expanded by 5.2%, compared to 2.5% for the U.S. But Yi sees the tables turning by the next decade and drew a parallel between China’s aging po[CENSORED]tion and how similar demographic trajectories cooled off the Japanese and German economies. “Based on these historical trends, China’s growth rate is likely to slow to 3% by 2028 and fall below that of the U.S. from 2031 to 2035,” he predicted. For its part, the Congressional Budget Office projected earlier this year that U.S. economic growth will ease much more gradually, sliding from about 2.2% in 2025 to 1.9% by the early 2030s. China is also unlikely to achieve “high-income” status, based on the World Bank’s per-capita income threshold, Yi added. After falling just short of 2023’s mark, China’s per-capital income won’t grow fast enough in the coming years to catch up as the benchmark rises in line with overall global growth. On top of that, China’s eroding trade surplus, low interest rates, and deflationary pressure will weigh on the currency, making it even tougher to reach high-income status, he said. “Above all, China must raise household disposable incomes and tackle its demographic crisis, both of which require a political and economic overhaul,” Yi concluded. “Given that China today is even more averse to economic reforms than it was when Deng Xiaoping launched his market-oriented reforms in 1978, rapid change is highly unlikely. The required transformation may take several decades, if not longer.” Pointing to China’s aging po[CENSORED]tion, veteran strategist Ed Yardeni last year said the country could become “the world’s largest nursing home.” Meanwhile, China’s slowing growth, real estate crisis, high youth unemployment, and U.S. restrictions on key technologies have led to predictions of a so-called lost decade of stagnation. Top China scholar Anne Stevenson-Yang, cofounder of J Capital Research, said earlier this month that “erratic and irresponsible policies, excessive Communist Party control and undelivered promises of reform have created a dead-end Chinese economy of weak domestic consumer demand and slowing growth.” The root cause of China’s economic problems is the Communist Party’s tight grip, which isn’t going away, while its strategies that focus on adding more industrial capacity and leaning on exports are counterproductive, she wrote in an op-ed in the New York Times. Most economists have recommended that Chinese leaders loosen their hold on the private sector and promote more consumption, which would entail reforming the government—”and that is unacceptable,” she added. https://fortune.com/2024/05/27/china-economy-outlook-growth-us-gdp-forecast-aging-po[CENSORED]tion-demographics-high-income/

A three-year old black male bear was “dispatched” after bursting into a family’s cabin in Alpine, Arizona, and taking a swipe at a 15-year-old boy who was alone inside watching YouTube videos. The incident marks the 16th bear attack on people in Arizona since 1990. Only two of the attacks were fatal; in this case the bear’s body has been taken for examination, including to be tested for rabies. Last year, a 66-year-old man was killed by a 360lb bear, estimated to be seven to 10 years old, while drinking coffee outside his cabin near Prescott, Arizona. The bear began eating him before dragging him down an embankment. Examiner’s later said the animal was rabies-free, had a good amount of body fat and appeared nutritionally in good shape. In the latest incident, the young bear attacked Brigham Hawkins at his family cabin near Blue River Road in Alpine. “Never in our wildest dreams did we think (a bear) would come in the home,” his mom, Carol, told AZ Family. Mrs Hawkins told the website the bear came in through an open door. Her son, she said, “hadn’t realized it because it came in from behind, and it reached over and like swiped at his face twice. Got him on the nose and the cheek and then went ahead and got his forehead and the top of his head.” She also also explained that her son can’t move quickly because has a neurological disorder. The bear left the cabin for a short time but came back inside a second time to strike the boy on the arm before his brother helped chase the bear away, KCTV reported. The boy is being treated at a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Arizona game and fish department supervisor Shawn Wagner told KCTV that the quick reaction by the boy’s family “to distract the bear from what very easily in a matter of seconds could have turned into a real tragedy there”. The agency reminds those visiting or living in bear country to be “bear aware” and recommend securing food and other “attractants”, to avoid leaving food in a tent or grill, and camping away from bodies of water. It also suggests setting up campsites away from places bears might forage for food, such as bodies of water, and avoid wearing scented lotions, deodorants, or perfume. But officials advised against running away but to back away slowly, keep eye contact with the bear, make yourself bigger by flaunting your arms or by pulling your shirt/jacket higher than your head. It’s also advised to throw items, yell at the bear, and fight back if attacked. Both Arizona and national parks officials say to not to eat or cook in your tent. But Arizona’s Wagner noted that “having an attack is extremely rare”. https://www.google.com/search?q=Bear+attacks+teenager+while+he+was+watching+videos+in+Arizona+cabin&rlz=1C1GCEA_enPK1048PK1048&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

When FCA and PSA merged a few years ago, Stellantis promised to keep all brands in its vast portfolio. That includes the troubled Lancia marque, which finally has a new car in the 2024 Ypsilon. The fourth-generation model is even getting the High-Fidelity treatment. Yes, HF is officially back. The dormant Italian company is showing off the Ypsilon HF, complete with a rally derivative. While all previous HF-badged cars had a combustion engine, the new Ypsilon HF is purely electric. It offers 237 horsepower from a front-mounted motor, therefore matching the Abarth 600e and Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce. That's no coincidence since the three cars share the Common Modular Platform (CMF) used by multiple other Stellantis products. That includes the not-for-America Jeep Avenger. The e-motor draws its juice from a 54-kWh battery pack inherited from the Alfa Romeo and Abarth models. Lancia touts a 0 to 62 mph in 5.8 seconds, which isn't too shabby for a small front-wheel-drive hatchback from a mainstream brand. Aside from the upgraded electric motor, the Ypsilon HF has a wider track and a lowered suspension for better handling.Today's debut is technically a preview since the hot supermini won't go on sale in Europe until May 2025. Lancia says all future models will benefit from the High-Fidelity treatment, including the revival of the Gamma and Delta set to arrive later this decade. The little elephant logo was first used in 1960 when owners formed a club reserved only for people who had at least six cars. HF Lancia Racing Team was created in 1963 but it wasn't until 1966 when the first car received the legendary logo–the Fulvia Coupe HF. Rally icons such as the Stratos HF and Delta HF Integrale Evolution got the little elephant during Lancia's glory days. Legend has it the design of the logo was chosen as early as 1953 as a lucky charm by Gianni, son of company's founder Vincenzo Lancia and the automaker's CEO between 1949 until 1955. https://www.motor1.com/news/721104/lancia-ypsilon-hf-debut-specs/

England captain Jos Buttler will miss Tuesday's T20I against Pakistan in Cardiff to be with his wife for the birth of their third child. Butter led the way for England with 84 in the first innings of their 23-run win over the tourists in the second match of the series at Edgbaston on Saturday, after the opening match in Leeds was abandoned without a ball being bowled.Vice-captain Moeen Ali is likely to take charge for the match at Sophia Gardens, while it remains to be seen whether Buttler will return for the fourth and final T20I of the series at The Oval on Thursday. "England been planning for this eventuality, as much as you can plan for the birth of a child," Sky Sports News reporter James Cole said.Vice-captain Moeen Ali is likely to take charge for the match at Sophia Gardens, while it remains to be seen whether Buttler will return for the fourth and final T20I of the series at The Oval on Thursday. "England been planning for this eventuality, as much as you can plan for the birth of a child," Sky Sports News reporter James Cole said."In terms of opening the batting here, it could be Will Jacks. He's batting at No 3 at the moment, but he's opened the batting in a T20 before and is comfortable in that position."Jacks has recently returned from a spell in the Indian Premier League, which included making a sparkling unbeaten century to lead Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a nine-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans. If he is elevated to opening the batting alongside Phil Salt in Cardiff, it would see Jacks partnering with someone he knows well from franchise cricket and who has made an impressive start to his international white-ball career. "I think we're both very comfortable," Jacks said. "Me and Phil have played a lot of cricket together - we've played franchise cricket together which definitely helps when we come to England. https://www.skysports.com/cricket/news/12123/13143949/jos-buttler-england-captain-to-miss-third-t20i-against-pakistan-in-cardiff-for-birth-of-third-child

But, what are the physiological mechanisms behind this? Dr Shiva Kumar R , head of the department and senior consultant in Neurology and Epileptology at the Manipal Hospitals, says, “When even a small amount of sleep is lost, such as one hour, the body experiences a disruption in its circadian rhythm. This internal clock regulates the sleep-wake cycles and any disruption can lead to a decrease in sleep quality in subsequent nights.” According to research from the Sleep Research Society, he continues, it takes multiple days to fully recover because sleep debt accumulates, and your body needs time to restore normal function and balance in your sleep architecture, particularly the deep sleep stages that are crucial for physical and cognitive recovery. “The body needs to go through several complete sleep cycles to make up for the deficit, which explains why a single hour of lost sleep can take up to four days to recover from.”The impact of losing a small amount of sleep can be significant. “Research shows that sleep is critical for cognitive functions including focus, attention, and decision-making. When sleep is disrupted, the brain’s ability to process information and maintain attention is impaired,” Dr Shiva states. He cites a few studies that have indicated that even a minor reduction in sleep can lead to decreased performance in tasks requiring cognitive effort. The cumulative effect of losing small amounts of sleep over several days can be similar to losing several hours of sleep in one night, with substantial impacts on cognitive abilities.Mitigating negative effects and expediting recovery Dr Shiva suggests, “To mitigate the negative effects of losing an hour of sleep and expedite recovery, individuals can adopt several strategies. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule helps regulate the circadian rhythm. Power naps, no longer than 20-30 minutes, can also provide a temporary boost in alertness and cognitive performance.” Additionally, improving sleep hygiene by avoiding caffeine and heavy meals before bedtime, creating a relaxing pre-sleep routine, and ensuring a comfortable sleep environment can enhance sleep quality. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/losing-even-an-hour-of-sleep-can-take-four-days-to-recover-from-this-is-why-9352848/

The charred remains of a Rafah tent camp More pictures are emerging from the tent camp in Rafah that was hit by an Israeli airstrike overnight. Much of the camp was burned down by a fire that broke out immediately after the strike. At least 45 people were killed, according to local authorities.Seven Palestinians killed in Israeli airstrike on house Medics in Gaza have said an Israeli airstrike on a house in Rafah today has killed seven people. Several others were wounded, they said. It follows an Israeli airstrike on the city overnight that killed at least 45 people sheltering in a tent camp. International authorities have expressed outrage over the deaths and have been piling pressure on Israel to halt its offensive on Rafah.More details emerge on shooting death of Egyptian security force member Earlier, we brought you news that an Egyptian security force member had been killed in a shooting incident near the Rafah border crossing. Egypt has now warned against compromising the security and safety of its security forces, a high-level source told Egypt's state-linked Al Qahera News. Preliminary investigations also showed that Egyptian security personnel had reacted to an exchange of gunfire "between Israeli forces and members of the Palestinian resistance, which led to shooting in several directions," the source said. They added that Egypt would take necessary measures to prevent the incident from recurring.Red Cross reports 'horrific injuries' from Rafah airstrike A Red Cross field hospital operating in Rafah saw a "very high influx" of injured Palestinians after last night's deadly airstrike. William Schomburg, the head of the ICRC delegation in Gaza, told Sky News the hospital first received reports of a "mass casualty situation" yesterday evening. Those who arrived at the field hospital had "horrific injuries", he said. "We're talking about very heavy shrapnel wounds. We're talking about severe burns as well as blast trauma injuries. "Our team conducted several operations, including, tragically, some amputations." The Red Cross field hospital has only been up and running for a few weeks. But Mr Schomberg said there was a risk of it, and other similar facilities nearby, becoming "overloaded very quickly" if Israel continues operations in Rafah. He warned the facility would then be unable to handle further influxes of patients. "We're holding off, but the situation is untenable and it's unacceptable," he said.Israeli tanks manoeuvre near Gaza border IDF soldiers direct tanks and armed people carriers near the border with Gaza in these latest images. However, sources told the news agency that supplies have not been distributed due to an ongoing Israeli assault. Little aid has reached southern Gaza since 6 May, when Israel took control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing. These aid arrivals would be the biggest aid delivery into southern Gaza since the launch of Israel's attacks in Rafah more than three weeks ago. Egyptian security sources said 123 aid trucks had crossed the border and handed over the goods to the United Nations. But Palestinian trucks that went to pick up the aid at the crossing returned empty, UN and Palestinian officials told Reuters. "Trucks moved through but it was not possible to collect them due to the rocket attacks yesterday and the IAF (air force) strikes overnight," a UN official in Gaza said. https://news.sky.com/story/israel-hamas-gaza-latest-ceasefire-rafah-sky-news-live-blog-12978800

As Joseph Stiglitz, the Columbia professor and Nobel laureate, touts his new book “The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society,” he has a two-fold message: The American Dream is a myth and freedom isn’t free. And especially when it comes to Gen Z, the generation that shook the political landscape with a protest movement headquartered steps from Stiglitz’s office, he tells Fortune he’s “had a lot of discussions with various people trying to understand what’s going on.” Stiglitz says the protest movement gripping his institution and many others “does hit home” and recalled his own history as a civil-rights protester in the 1960s. “This may sound hard to believe,” he says, “but I was there in the march in Washington in August 1963, with Martin Luther King. And I was there when he gave the ‘I Have a Dream’ speech.” This had an influence on his thinking as a young man, he says, and “an enormous impact on the direction of our country, at least for a while.” This mournful tone fits much of Stiglitz’s career, as the left-leaning economist and author finds himself in increasingly lonely company: the pro-capitalist progressive. Opinion polls widely indicate a disaffection with capitalism among some millennials and more Gen Zers, exemplified by the surprising electoral successes in the last decade of the so-called Democratic Socialists, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders. But Stiglitz has all along maintained that socialism is not the answer; rather, a well-regulated capitalism is sorely needed. At the same time, he has decried the hard-right turn in American political and business culture, to the point where he doubts the impact of Reverend King’s famous speech. https://fortune.com/2024/05/26/joseph-stiglitz-interview-gen-z-donald-trump-american-dream-neoliberalism/

A Japanese man named Toco, who invested $14,000 to turn himself into a dog (border collie) now wishes to transform into a different animal. Toco, who has documented his journey on his YouTube channel "I want to be an animal," said he wanted to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming an animal and exploring life as a dog. In a recent interview with a Japanese news outlet WanQol, Toco revealed his desire to live as a new animal. Meanwhile, he mentioned four animals he wants to try but acknowledged that two of them might be impractical due to logistical challenges. Toco said, "I'm researching ways to make my limbs look more like a dog's. It takes a lot of effort to clean the fur when it gets dirty. I would like to become another animal, possibly another dog, a panda, or a bear." He further elaborated, "A fox or a cat would be nice, but they are too small for humans to try. I'd like to fulfill my dream of becoming another animal someday." Previously, Toco chose to transform into a collie because it is his "favorite breed." Meanwhile, he frequently posts videos on his channel showing him going for dog walks, eating dog food, and learning new tricks. Toco further said, "I made it a collie because it looks real when I put it on my taste and costume. My favourite is quadrupedal animals, especially cute ones. Among them, I thought that a big animal close to me would be good, considering that it would be a realistic model, so I decided to make it a dog. Long-haired dogs can mislead the human figure. I met such a condition and made Collie, my favourite breed of dog." He also revealed that he receives numerous comments from viewers wanting to follow in his footsteps, which he finds encouraging. Moreover, psychologists suggest that Toco might be a Therian, someone who identifies as a non-human animal species, distinct from Furries, who enjoy occasional cosplay in animal costumes. https://jang.com.pk/en/12615-japanese-man-who-turn-himself-into-dog-now-dreams-to-become-another-animal-news

The Chevrolet Silverado EV will get the job done. It lives up to its impressive range figures, has a trick "midgate" that adds genuine functionality, and enough onboard power to juice up tools, camping gear, or even your home. But all of this capability comes at a price—literally and figuratively. This truck weighs about 9,000 pounds. Its ride, at least in RST form, is compromised as a result. And the interior doesn't feel worthy of a hundred-grand price tag. For that kind of money, I'm not sure this particular Silverado EV works. The competition will still find this truck a tough nut to crack, though, because of what it offers in spades: capability. The Silverado EV is GM’s first electric pickup aimed at doing real work. Small numbers of the base work truck, the WT, are already out on the road. Now the automaker has unveiled the upscale RST model, the equipment-laden top trim designed for regular people (with six figures lying around) to use every day.Let's start with what the Silverado gets right, because its specs are impressive. The battery pack is 213.7 kilowatt-hours gross, with a usable capacity of around 204 kilowatt-hours. This behemoth amount of energy is a vital piece of the puzzle. To convince pickup buyers to go electric, you need to have more than enough range and the ability to charge quickly. This pack enables both of those things, with 350 kilowatts fast charging and more range than any of its competition; 440 miles. The power and torque this pack can provide are also impressive: 754 horsepower and 785 pound-feet of torque. The big battery also addresses issues with trailering. It’s reasonable to expect any electric truck's range will be sliced almost in half while pulling a heavy load. The Silverado can tow up to 10,000 pounds, which is a lot. With that much stuff dragging behind you, it would be best if you didn’t have to stop to charge on the way to your destination at all. This is how Chevy attempts to address the charging-with-a-trailer problem: by mitigating it all together with massive amounts of range. https://www.motor1.com/reviews/720600/2024-silverado-ev-rst-first-drive-review/

England's second one-day international against Pakistan was abandoned as persistent rain in Taunton forced a washout. Pakistan's Sidra Ameen (seven) and Sadaf Shamas (18) made a sensible start after winning the toss and electing to field but just after the sixth over heavy rain forced the players off with the score on 29-0.The match was officially called off at 3.15pm after heavy rain left puddles across the outfield with no chance of the weather clearing up in time for play.Sadaf was dropped twice during her outing off the bowling of England quick Lauren Filer. The Pakistan opener edged to Sophie Ecclestone and then Heather Knight at slip on seven with the England captain unable to take the tough chance. Filer continued to create chances with her pace which saw Sidra edge behind to Ecclestone at slip on three. Again the England fielder was unable to pocket the ball cleanly.Sadaf had another life on 16 in the fifth over as she slapped a wide delivery from Filer towards Danni Wyatt, who could not take the catch at backward point.Spinner Ecclestone is on the brink of becoming the fastest woman to take 100 wickets in ODI cricket. She currently has 98 to her name and needs two in her next match to break the record set by Australia great Cathryn Fitzpatrick in 64 games. The teams now head to Chelmsford on Wednesday for the third and final ODI after England won the earlier T20 series. https://www.skysports.com/cricket/news/12123/13143340/england-vs-pakistan-persistent-rain-in-taunton-forces-second-odi-to-be-abandoned

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the aisles of imported “superfoods” lining supermarket shelves? While these exotic ingredients may hold a certain allure, are they truly necessary for a healthy diet in India? The answer is a surprising no! Let us debunk the myth that good health requires expensive, imported ingredients. Dr Vedika Premani, a clinical dietician at Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, suggested these 9 delicious and nutritious desi (local) swaps you can make for those trendy videshi (foreign) foods. From buttermilk to bajra, discover how embracing local options can elevate your health, while also celebrating Indian cuisine. 1. Guacamole and avocado toast: A desi twist Ditch the avocado! Mashed peas offer a budget-friendly, protein-rich alternative with a similar texture, said Premani. For a creamy spread, blend yoghurt with cucumber – it’s probiotic-rich and bursting with essential fatty acids, she added.2. Go local with your berries for a burst of antioxidants Skip the imported blueberries! India boasts a treasure trove of antioxidant-rich berries. Consider incorporating mulberries, wood apples (jamun), or even Indian gooseberries i.e., amla into your diet. These local gems can be enjoyed in beverages, desserts, jams, or refreshing fruit salads. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/food-wine/ditch-videshi-swap-9-desi-foods-9352543/

Prince Harry anticipated losing a military title, but not surprised when he lost the title of colonel-in-chief of his former regiment to Prince William according to a royal commentator. Earlier this month, King Charles passed on the blue beret and the duties of colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps to his eldest son, the Prince of Wales. The monarch had been associated with the group for 32 years, while Prince Harry trained to fly Apaches with the Army Air Corps. In 2010, his father awarded him his provisional wings before his deployment to Afghanistan. For many years, Prince Harry was widely tipped to become their colonel-in-chief. However, his decision to leave royal duties with Meghan Markle in 2020 meant he could not have official military ties. Therefore, Prince William has become the colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps, and not Prince Harry. In 2020, royal biographers Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand opened up about Meghan and Harry's reaction to the duke losing his honorary military titles. They wrote: "Harry's lifelong commitment to the military was why the Mountbatten Festival of Music three days later was a particularly difficult moment; he was set to wear his Captain-General of the Royal Marines uniform for the very last time. "During a conversation backstage, on arrival, Harry told Major General Matthew Holmes: 'I'm devastated that I am having to step down.' "'It was so unnecessary", Meghan later told a friend of the decision to strip Harry of his military honours. "'And it's not just taking something away from him; it's also that entire military veteran community. You can see how much he means to them, too. So why? The powers [of the institution] are unfortunately greater than me. "Though the evening served as a poignant tribute to Britain's Armed Forces, it also became a moment to thank the much-loved prince for his contributions to the military community." Royal author Gareth Russell spoke exclusively to GB News regarding Harry's feelings after missing out on the title of colonel-in-chief of his old regiment. He said: "The Duke of Sussex's wife has obviously indicated in private conversations on the record that the military does matter to him, and that losing the military posts was something that he felt very keenly. "That being said, it's hard to imagine how anyone could have thought that the command of the regiment would go to anyone but the current Prince of Wales. https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/1193512-prince-harry-expected-to-lose-military-title-from-prince-william
