  3. Inflation rose about as expected in April, with markets on edge over when interest rates might start coming down, according to a measure released Friday that is followed closely by the Federal Reserve. The personal consumption expenditures price index excluding food and energy costs increased just 0.2% for the period, in line with the Dow Jones estimate, the Commerce Department reported. On an annual basis, core PCE was up 2.8%, or 0.1 percentage point higher than the estimate. Including the volatile food and energy category, PCE inflation was at 2.7% on an annual basis and 0.3% from a month ago. Those numbers were in line with forecasts. Fed officials prefer the PCE reading over the more closely followed consumer price index, which the Labor Department compiles. The Commerce Department measure accounts for changes in consumer behavior such as substituting less expensive items for costlier alternatives, and has a wider scope than the CPI. “The core index came in at 2.8%. That’s fine, but it’s been trading in a range for five months now, and that’s pretty sticky to me,” said Dan North, senior economist for North America at Allianz Trade. “If I’m [Fed Chair Jerome] Powell, I’d like to see that start moving down, and it’s barely creeping. ... I’m not reaching for the Pepto yet, but I’m not feeling great. This is not what you want to see.” A 1.2% rise in energy prices helped push up the headline increase. Food prices posted a 0.2% decline on the month. Goods prices rose 0.2% while services saw a 0.3% increase, continuing a normalization trend for an economy in which services and consumption provide much of the fuel. Along with the inflation reading, Friday’s release included data about income and spending. Personal income increased 0.3% on the month, matching the estimate, while spending rose just 0.2%, below the 0.4% estimate and off March’s downwardly revised 0.7%. Adjusted for inflation, the spending numbers showed a 0.1% decline, due in large part to a 0.4% decrease in spending on goods and just a 0.1% rise in services expenditures. Market reaction following the release saw futures tied to major stock averages rising while Treasury yields moved lower. “The PCE Price Index didn’t show much progress on inflation, but it didn’t show any backsliding, either. Based on the initial reaction in stock index futures, the market will see it mostly as a positive,” said Chris Larkin, managing director of trading and investing for E-Trade from Morgan Stanley. “Investors will have to remain patient, though,” he added. “The Fed has suggested it will take more than one month of favorable data to confirm inflation is reliably moving lower again, so there’s still no reason to think a first rate cut will come any earlier than September.” As inflation data has come in hotter than expected, central bank officials have encouraged a cautious approach. That means less likelihood that they will be cutting rates anytime soon. Most recently, New York Fed President John Williams said Thursday that while he is confident inflation will continue to recede, prices are still too high and he has not seen sufficient progress on moving to the Fed’s 2% annual goal. Markets have reined in their expectations for rate reductions this year. Pricing Friday morning indicated a probability that the first move likely won’t come until November, at the Fed’s meeting that concludes two days after the presidential election. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/31/pce-inflation-april-2024-the-feds-preferred-inflation-measure-rose-0point2percent-in-april.html
  4. Wounds that are superficial for some can be life-threatening for others. With diabetic wounds, healing can be slow, particularly in the feet, increasing the tissue's susceptibility to infection. Foot ulcers and other diabetic foot complications have similar mortality rates to some cancers, yet progress toward improved treatments has plateaued. Now, researchers may have found a better way to kickstart the healing process. Arizona State University (ASU) bioengineers have developed a multistep strategy that applies different nanomaterials to wounds at different times to support both early- and late-stage healing. In a study published in the journal Biomaterials, the authors' method outperformed a common wound dressing in a diabetic mouse model, closing wounds faster and producing more robust skin tissue. "Healing a wound is like building a house. You have to lay the foundation first before you can put in the plumbing," said co-first author Jordan Yaron, Ph.D., a bioengineering assistant research professor at ASU. "With our approach, we're mindful of which stage the wound is in. Providing the right treatment at the right time is key." The researchers' analysis also suggests that their approach unexpectedly activated an immune cell po[CENSORED]tion not normally seen in wounds that can resolve inflammation, which highlights a new potential avenue to accelerate healing. A multifaceted solution for a multifaceted problem Clinically, the standard practice for wounds is to keep them clean and use a dressing to protect them while they heal. This approach gets the job done for most injuries but falls short for patients with conditions that interfere with the healing process, such as diabetes. In addition to causing poor circulation and neuropathy, diabetes can disrupt wound healing by impairing the function of various immune cells. The researchers devised a strategy to treat wounds like these and compared it to a commonly used dressing in a diabetic mouse model. For the first step, the team fabricated a silk nanomaterial dressing embedded with gold nanorods. Because gold nanoparticles readily convert light to heat, the team was able to direct a laser at dressings placed over fresh wounds in mice, producing heat that quickly sealed them in place and provided a high level of protection. The strategy, which the authors previously found success with, creates something akin to an instantaneous scab, Yaron explained. This time around, the authors added histamine to the mix, a natural biochemical produced by the immune system that plays important roles in inflammation, blood vessel development, and allergic reactions. Inflammation dominates the body's initial response to injuries, but eventually subsides to allow the body to rebuild. However, diabetic wounds can get stuck in first gear, maintaining persistent, low-grade inflammation, which can inhibit the healing process. https://phys.org/news/2024-05-nanomaterial-quickly-wounds-diabetic-animal.html
  5. Hyundai will head to this year's Pike Peak hill climb with four Ioniq 5 Ns. Two of them will be very close to showroom stock, as revealed by Hyundai back in April. The South Korean brand announced Friday it will additionally campaign two upgraded models in hopes of capturing the modified electric SUV/Crossover record. Say hello to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Time Attack Spec. Visually speaking, the differences between a standard Ioniq 5 N are obvious. Hyundai adds an aggressive aero kit that includes a gigantic spoiler, side sills, and fender flares. You'll find 18-inch forged wheels with Yokohama slicks under the arches, backed by six-piston brakes for the front and four-piston clamps at the rear. The suspension is upgraded with three-way adjustable dampers. Ride height and camber are also adjustable. There's a bit more power, too. Hyundai retuned the EV powertrain to get an additional 37 horsepower from the rear motor in full overboost mode. That gives the TA Spec a total of 678 hp, but the components are still production items found in the standard Ioniq 5 N. As such, we pinged Hyundai to ask about a possible production version of the TA Spec. We've yet to hear back, but we will update the post if more news is available. All Hyundai Ioniq 5s at Pike Peak wear a special wrap and get the necessary safety equipment to participate. That includes upgraded external speakers capable of producing 120 decibels of sound, emitting tones produced through Hyundai's N Active Sound+ system. Aside from the safety requirement of EVs emitting sound while racing, Hyundai states the engine sound will enhance driver feedback. In addition to the race-prepped models. Hyundai will campaign two production-spec Ioniq 5 Ns with an eye on getting a production EV record. The only changes from stock are safety-related with roll cages and gear necessary to compete. And for the gamers out there, Hyundai is working with the Gran Turismo franchise on upcoming hill climb action in GT7. More details on that endeavor will come later. “We are investing in the future of motorsport with our first ever electric Pikes Peak racer and collaboration with Gran Turismo," said Till Wartenberg, vice president and head of N Brand at Hyundai. "Motorsport passion continues to be at Hyundai N’s core as we move into the future." https://www.motor1.com/news/721723/hyundai-ioniq-5-n-pikes-peak-car/

  7. You cough, your breath feels tight, and climbing a flight of stairs leaves you winded. These could be signs of everyday life, but for long-term smokers, they can be a chilling reminder of the damage inflicted on their bodies. Years of cigarette use leave a long shadow, impacting nearly every organ system. The harmful chemicals in cigarettes, including tar, nicotine, and over 7000 carcinogens, take a heavy toll on your body over time, said Dr Sai Reddy, Consultant Pulmonologist at Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad. He highlighted the increased risk of various cancers, predominantly lung cancer but also mouth, throat, oesophagus, pancreas, and bladder cancers. “The cardiovascular system also suffers, with a heightened risk of coronary artery disease, hypertension, and stroke. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, and emphysema are just some of the respiratory illnesses that plague long-term smokers,” he said. The body under siege Dr Murarji Ghadge, Consultant ENT and Sleep Disorder Specialist at Ruby Hall Clinic Pune, elaborated on the specific ways long-term smoking wreaks havoc on various bodily systems:Respiratory System: COPD, with its persistent cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties, is a common consequence. The risk of lung cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related deaths, is significantly elevated. Cardiovascular System: Smoking hardens and narrows arteries (atherosclerosis), paving the way for heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral artery disease. Additionally, it raises the risk of high blood pressure and blood clots. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/what-happens-smoker-health-risks-no-tobacco-day-9363509/
  8. Sarah Ferguson was reportedly furious after Meghan Markle "stole her daughter's wedding day thunder." There are claims that the Sussexes "stole Princess Eugenie's thunder" by announcing their baby news to the Royal Family at her wedding to Jack Brooksbank in October 2018.According to reports, the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of York have had an up-and-down relationship since they first met in October 2016. Royal reporters noted that Meghan and Harry's announcement left Fergie furious. Royal reporters said Meghan and Harry's announcement left Fergie furious. In the book Royals at War, journalists Dylan Howard and Andy Tillett said: "Meghan put her foot in it when she decided that it would be the ideal moment to announce that she and Harry were expecting their first child. "This was a huge social gaffe, even if you were not a royal – stealing the limelight from Eugenie, who was furious, as was her mother, Sarah." When Harry and Meghan made things official with their relationship, the Duke wanted Fergie to be the first royal to meet her, with them meeting for drinks at the Royal Lodge together as a trio. But despite Sarah and Meghan having met during cosy drinks back in 2016, and having since attended weddings and funerals together, Sarah recently claimed that she "doesn't really know" the former Suits star. Last year in March 2023, Fergie told The Telegraph she "doesn't know" Meghan. She brazenly admitted to the paper: "I don't really know Meghan. I haven't really met her." But in 2021, Meghan sat down with Oprah Winfrey for the televised interview she and Harry did, with the Duchess gushing over how Fergie taught her how to curtsey. Meghan revealed how she did not know she would be meeting the Queen until "moments before". https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/1195459-sarah-ferguson-furious-over-meghan-markle-for-stealing-spotlight-baby-news

  11. The ongoing war in Gaza is the most expensive in the country’s history: The central bank has estimated the total cost of the conflict will run to 250 billion shekels ($67.4 billion) through 2025. Defense spending before the war was at an all-time low of 4.5% of GDP. It’s set to double this year to 9%, according to Manuel Trajtenberg, a professor emeritus in the economics department of Tel Aviv University.“The decisive test will be the government’s ability to lower the defense-spending-to-GDP ratio back to reasonable levels within several years,” he says. “Otherwise, we may slide back into another lost decade.” Working in Israel’s favor is that its starting point was strong. Over the past 15 years, the nation’s per-capita GDP has risen above that of Britain, France and Japan. But costs are apparent. When Hamas attacked and some 300,000 reservists rushed into uniform, Israel’s powerhouse tech industry suddenly found itself short of labor, while businesses in and around the Tel Aviv area lost some of their best customers. With Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu having committed billions of shekels for spending demanded by his ultra-Orthodox coalition partners, many economists worry of a “spiral of collapse” — where Israel’s better-educated, high-earning citizens choose to emigrate rather than shoulder the fiscal burden of supporting large Orthodox families. Scores of economists conveyed that message recently to the government, in a letter calling for an end to public support for schools that don’t train students for the modern labor market and requiring ultra-Orthodox to be drafted. Israel already underinvests in areas such as education and health compared with developed economies. If policymakers look to free up funds for military upgrades by paring back those priorities, along with transportation and welfare, it’s the economy that may pay the price. The US economy expanded at a “slight or modest” pace across most regions since early April and consumers pushed back against higher prices, the Federal Reserve said in its Beige Book survey. Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said he’s hopeful that the “explosive” price pressures seen during the Covid-19 pandemic will normalize over the next year. President Javier Milei’s main legislative attempt to deregulate Argentina’s economy is a step closer to a decisive vote. Australia’s inflation is showing persistent strength and weighing heavily on the finances of some households, a senior Reserve Bank official said. The ECB is set to impose fines on several lenders for their protracted failure to address the impact of climate change. Need-to-Know Research China’s households have “taken a big hit” to their wealth in recent years thanks especially to the property-market slump that’s caused the first sustained drop in prices since the current urban housing system emerged in the 2000s, according to Gavekal Dragonomics. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-05-30/world-economy-latest-israel-s-lost-decade
  12. NEW DELHI: Animals collapsed, people jumped on water tankers with buckets amid shortages and government employees changed their work hours as blistering summer heat kept its grip on north India on Thursday. Although Thursday’s readings were marginally lower in Delhi than the previous day when one area recorded an all-time high of 52.9 degrees Celsius (127.22 Fahrenheit), the region still saw temperatures touching 47 C (116.6 F). Delhi, which has a po[CENSORED]tion of 20 million, recorded its first heat-related death on Wednesday, with a 40-year-old laborer dying of heatstroke, local media reported. Authorities said they are investigating if the 52.9 C reading in the Mungeshpur neighborhood on Wednesday was caused by a sensor error at the local weather station. Television images showed people chasing water tankers or climbing on top of them in parts of the city to fill containers amidst an acute water shortage that the government blames on low levels in the Yamuna River — Delhi’s primary source of water. Along the river’s banks, women in shanties endured stifling conditions in their homes as their cooking stoves aggravated the sweltering weather. “The heat is worse this year. We work like this every day so we get into the habit,” said Seema, 19, who cooks for her family twice a day. In the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh, a policeman used CPR to revive a monkey that he said had fainted and fallen from a tree because of the heat, pumping its chest for 45 minutes, local media reported, and Delhi also saw cases of heatstroke among birds. As more people chose to order food and groceries by home delivery instead of venturing out in the heat, delivery personnel have been spending more time on their scooters and motorbikes, their employers said. “Order frequency has been higher during the afternoon when people are avoiding stepping out,” said Ateef Shaikh, a delivery fleet manager at a Swiggy delivery app store in Mumbai. Zomato and its grocery delivery business, Blinkit, have taken additional measures to help delivery workers, including providing refreshments and comfortable clothing, their spokespersons said. Blinkit is installing air coolers in the waiting areas of all its stores, the spokesperson added. The extreme temperatures have also sparked more fires in several parts of the country, including in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, where authorities are using drones to monitor forest fires. The country, which is nearing the end of multi-phase national elections, is not alone in experiencing unusually high temperatures. Billions across Asia are grappling with the heat and in neighboring Pakistan the temperature crossed 52 C (125.6 F)this week. Scientists say this trend has been worsened by human-driven climate change. India, the world’s third-biggest greenhouse gas emitter, has long held that, as a developing nation, it should not be forced to cut its energy-related emissions but has set a target of becoming a net-zero emitter by 2070. https://www.arabnews.pk/node/2520141/world
  13. Affordable range is the name of the game when it comes to convincing the general public to buy an electric vehicle. The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV takes a confident step in that direction. A base Equinox EV will start at $34,995 before tax credits, with a standard estimated range of 319 miles for front-wheel-drive models. Those numbers will be hard to beat. All GM has to do now is get the launch right. Although the Equinox EV is an affordable car, the cheapest trim isn’t available yet. The trim I drove was a high-spec RS model, which offers the same range and capability as the base car, but with a higher-brow interior, a sporty exterior, and more ride comfort. Chevy says all trims will be available within the first year of production, but needless to say, the roughly $50,000 Equinox RS I drove won’t stir the hearts of the masses, just on account of its price.Fortunately, the initial availability of only higher-priced models is the only serious blemish on the Equinox as a whole. Unlike the Silverado EV RST, which shares battery modules with the Equinox, the smaller Chevy does not feel excessively heavy or awkward from behind the wheel. It feels like a crossover with plenty of space and range, and a level of refinement that’s atypical of cars in this segment. There’s nothing dramatic about the Equinox EV. It just works. The front-wheel-drive Equinox has a single electric motor that sends 213 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque to the ground. That’s plenty around town, but the power falls off at highway speeds. The car’s relatively low operating voltage, combined with a high front-drive ratio—nearly 12:1—likely has something to do with that. All-wheel-drive models get 288 hp and 333 lb-ft, but equipped with the same battery, the car’s range drops to 285 miles. https://www.motor1.com/reviews/721438/2024-chevy-equinox-ev-first-drive-review/
  14. NEW DELHI: Amidst widespread speculations, Virat Kohli has finally departed for the United States on Thursday to join the Indian squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. However, it remains uncertain if Kohli will be able to participate in the only warm-up game against Bangladesh on Saturday following his long flight. Kohli's experience and form are crucial for India's campaign as they aim to reclaim the T20 World Cup title after their inaugural 2007 edition triumph. Fans and cricket analysts alike eagerly anticipate his performance on American soil, where he is expected to play a pivotal role in India's quest for glory in the prestigious tournament, starting on June 1.Kohli is the only player from India's T20 World Cup squad who has yet to arrive in the USA. The other 18 cricketers, including four reserves, started their training session in New York on Wednesday. Kohli showcased his exceptional batting prowess in the recently concluded IPL, amassing an impressive 741 runs in just 15 matches. His outstanding performance earned him the prestigious Orange Cap for the second time in his career. Kohli's strike rate of 154.70 further highlighted his dominance throughout the season. The Indian team is set to embark on their T20 World Cup campaign, starting with a match against Ireland on June 5 in New York. Following that, they will face their arch-rivals Pakistan in a highly anticipated encounter on June 9. The team will then take on the host nation, USA, on June 12 before heading to Lauderhill, Florida, where they will compete against Canada on June 15. https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/icc-mens-t20-world-cup/virat-kohli-finally-departs-for-usa-amid-t20-world-cup-buzz/articleshow/110570958.cms
  15. Delhi is home to heritage sites such as Humayun’s Tomb, the alleys of Shahjahanabad, Qutub Minar and numerous other monuments, some preserved and some in ruins. And it’s not unusual to hear of heritage walks organised by historians and culture enthusiasts. But this industry is witnessing a diversification in the walk leader community. While curated walks are no longer exclusive to historians, influencers, too, are turning into amateur walk leaders. Social media is seeing a trend in the “romanticising” of the city, its past, its culture, and its aesthetics, much of which is replete with misinformation and false narratives. Presenting a glorified facet of history, it deviates from reality itself.“I started City Tales as an Instagram page to document my explorations in 2019 and began leading walks in 2022,” says Rameen Khan, 36, who approaches heritage walks through history-based storytelling. An MBA by qualification, Rameen has been leading heritage walks in Mehrauli Archaeological Park, Purana Qila and Safdarjung’s Tomb. “I have no academic background in history and I make sure to tell this to people,” says Rameen. He’s critical of walk leaders who use an intellectual aura to build credibility. This practice of presenting incorrect facts is harming the industry, he adds. For instance, the false narratives surrounding Malcha Mahal that the monument is haunted, takes away from its Tughlak-era history of being a hunting lodge, and the explorations into the mysterious royal family that lived there in the ruins, until recently.Author Rana Safvi, who has led numerous walks in Delhi, says, “There are two kinds of walks taking place today. The first led by people who have a background in history and are well-read, and the other curated by leaders who are unaware of actual history and provide half-baked information gathered from the internet but say it with so much authority that it seems true.”Shah Umair, a numismatist, po[CENSORED]rly known as Sikkawala, started leading heritage walks to places like Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah and Purani Dilli post the pandemic. Shah, who owns a creative agency in Gurgaon and pursues walk-leading as a passion, says, “The people coming in are not well-read and just gather information from Wikipedia, which is making the industry suffer… People have come for my walks, recorded my script, and then conducted their own walks with the plagiarised content.” Recognising a need for a local from Delhi-6, Anas Khan started leading heritage walks in 2021, using stories to talk about the city’s culture and history. An anthropologist, Anas began Unzip Delhi, a platform to hold walks in Old Delhi, including places such as Ghalib Ki Haveli, Zafar Mahal and the northern Ridge. Anas asserts that newcomers should be offered support and resources to prevent the dissemination of misinformation and allow for a healthy growth of the heritage walks community. He adds, “Storytelling is justified once the storyteller tells the audience that their content may not be factually correct and it is a folk tale.” The absence of a disclaimer would mean distorting history, reiterates Anas. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/art-and-culture/is-the-profile-of-delhis-heritage-walks-changing-9361628/

  21. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s key economic indicators have been showcasing stability in the real, fiscal, and external sectors as the country is heading towards the end of FY2024, the Ministry of Finance said in its latest report on Wednesday. The report titled 'Monthly Economic Update and Outlook report for May 2024', the finance ministry’s Economic Adviser’s Wing noted that signs of economic stability were becoming more evident amid stability in the key sectors.According to the report, GDP growth is elevating while inflation rates are on a decline with a positive primary balance, reflecting the effectiveness of recent fiscal consolidation efforts. The economic performance also indicates that agriculture has been a major contributor to this fiscal year’s economic upswing, registering a growth of 6.25%. The agriculture sector’s recovery is mainly attributed to government initiatives through improved input supply and increased credit disbursement to farmers. Large Scale Manufacturing (LSM) growth in 2024 Quarter 3, became positive and is expected to remain moderately positive on average throughout the second half of the current fiscal year. It witnessed a minor decline of 0.1% during July-March FY 2024 against the contraction of 7.0% same period last year. During this period, 11 to 22 sectors witnessed positive growth. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation stood at 17.3% on a year-on-year basis in April 2024 as compared to 36.4% in April 2023. The major drivers include housing, water, electricity, gas & fuel, perishable food items, furnishing & household equipment maintenance, clothing, footwear and transport. On the fiscal front, during July to March FY24, the revenue growth outpaced the growth in expenditures. Within revenues, both tax and non-tax collection grew significantly by 29.3% and 90.7%, respectively.
