Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) has named St. Olaf College Professor of Economics Anthony Becker the next Minnesota State Economist. After 11 years in the role, Laura Kalambokidis is preparing to turn over the state’s economic forecasting and revenue reporting duties to Becker on June 30. Minnesota’s state economist provides crucial, nonpartisan economic research and analysis that helps drive state budget development and track the state’s financial performance. Minnesota’s twice-annual economic forecasts look at many factors that can influence state revenues and expenses. The documents provide predictive data that state policymakers and legislators use to guide spending decisions. The integrity of the work requires that it be done based on sound data and economic principles without partisan influence. “Economic forecasting has been a passion of mine since my time in graduate school, and it is an honor to use the knowledge and experience I’ve gained over the years in service to Minnesota,” Becker says. “Kalambokidis is highly respected in and out of state government. It is a great privilege to take over this important work from her. I look forward to continuing her high standards of transparency and objectivity and her commitment to following the data to give the Governor and Legislature the most accurate and meaningful forecasts possible.”Becker will join current state economist Kalambokidis at MMB before she leaves her role. Kalambokidis served in the role throughout the economic uncertainties created by the global COVID-19 pandemic and the U.S. response to it. She will continue to teach in the Applied Economics Department and serve as an extension economist at the University of Minnesota. “I am very pleased to announce Becker has agreed to become our next state economist,” Commissioner of MMB Erin Campbell says. “His many years studying and teaching economics, including nearly 40 years as a professor at St. Olaf College, have provided Dr. Becker with a strong background in economics at the state as well as national and global levels.” Becker has been a faculty member at St. Olaf since 1987. He served as the Husby-Johnson Professor of Business and Economics from 2016 to 2019, chaired the Economics Department from 2012 to 2020, and has chaired several faculty committees. He has also worked as a consultant in economic analysis and as an expert witness in economic damages. Becker has been a visiting professor at the Universidad Nacional in Costa Rica and an affiliate faculty at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral in Santa Fe, Argentina. He was also a visiting professor at Middlebury College in Vermont. Becker holds a Ph.D. and a master’s degree in economics, both from Duke University, and a bachelor’s degree with honors in economics from the University of Maryland at College Park. A published author, he is a member of the American Economic Association, American Society of Hispanic Economists, National Association of Forensic Economists, and Western Economic Association International. https://wp.stolaf.edu/news/anthony-becker-named-minnesota-state-economist

Workers at the Rafah Zoo had only a couple of days to evacuate the animals to a safe area when Israel launched its offensive in the southern city of Gaza Strip. Three elderly lions as well as cats, guard dogs and turtles were left behind, Fathi Juma, the owner of the Zoo, said. "We ran out of time and we had to leave the area and keep the rest of the animals in the zoo and of course those animals will die. In a maximum time of a week or 10 days, if no one goes and put food for them, or an organization or people who are concerned bring the animals to where we are, they will die because the animals cannot survive without food and water.”, Juma said. Some of the animals made it out of Rafah and were evacuated to a cow farm in Khan Younis but they also also face hard conditions due to lack of food. “This situation is disastrous. We only give them what is available such as canned food brought in aid such as chickpeas, fava beans and beef. We feed them whatever is available. The conditions are very bad, even their psychological status is bad. We now feed the animals not to make them feel full but only to survive for the second day.”, Samer Juma, a worker at the Zoo, said. Southern Gaza has been largely cut off from aid since Israel launched what it called a limited incursion into Rafah on May 6. Since then over one million Palestinians, many already displaced, have fled the city. Around 80% of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have fled their homes, severe hunger is widespread and U.N. officials say parts of the territory are experiencing famine. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel must take over Rafah to eliminate Hamas’ remaining battalions and achieve “total victory” over the militants, who recently regrouped in other parts of Gaza. The war between Israel and Hamas has killed nearly 36,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and fighters in its count. Israel blames civilian deaths on Hamas because the militants operate in dense, residential areas. https://www.africanews.com/2024/06/03/rafah-zoo-animals-forced-to-evacuate-amid-israeli-offensive/

Is the Subaru WRX in trouble? The company just posted May 2024 sales and the once-po[CENSORED]r sports sedan is near the bottom of the chart. In fact, it barely edged out the electric Solterra crossover. Specifically, Subaru sold just 1,673 WRXs in May. That's a drop of 39.6 percent versus last year, and lest we forget, the current WRX generation isn't old. It debuted for the 2022 model year, and the upgraded WRX TR followed in October 2023. By comparison, 1,546 Solterra's were sold last month—up 254.6 percent compared to May 2023. Admittedly, the Solterra was very fresh and new back then. But it's not a game-changer in the EV world, offering a modest 215 horsepower with all-wheel drive and a range of just 227 miles. As for the WRX, it wields a 271-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder connected to either a six-speed manual or a CVT. The stick is available on all trim levels save for the range-topping GT, though the WRX TR offers similar features with the three-pedal setup. Of course, there is no STI model, as Subaru canceled it for this generation, but a tS model coming in 2025 has something of an STI vibe. Don't be fooled though—it still has the same WRX powertrain, albeit with upgraded suspension and brakes. It's worth mentioning the Subaru BRZ is also down in sales. With just 227 units sold in May, the BRZ is Subaru's worst-selling vehicle in the United States. It's dropped 45 percent so far this year. And then there's the Forester, up 61.4 percent through May 2024. It's easily the best-selling model in Subaru's lineup and a reminder that SUVs are king when it comes to profits. Subaru was not immediately available for comment when asked by Motor1 for insight into sales figures for the WRX and the BRZ. It's no secret that the current-generation WRX hasn't had the best reception from enthusiasts. Styling has seldom been a WRX strong suit, but the weird wheel arches and bland face leave many people calling this generation boring. Our own Peter Holderith said the WRX "has lost so much charm" while pointing out comments about it being a more mature vehicle. That begs a very important question: do you really want a mature WRX? Sales suggest the answer is a resounding no. And then there's the price. A zero-option WRX Base starts at $33,855—a reasonable figure in 2024. But the only way to get upgraded suspension and brakes is the $42,775 WRX TR. That's a lot of coin for an awkward-looking sports sedan with 271 hp and muted driving dynamics. Could this mark the beginning of the end for the enduring road-going rally car? We will update this article if Subaru shares some insight into the WRX, but sales certainly aren't looking good. https://www.motor1.com/news/721924/subaru-wrx-sales-down/

There’s no doubt sleep is good for the brain. It allows different parts to regenerate and helps memories stabilise. When we don’t get enough sleep, this can increase stress levels and exacerbate mental health issues. Evidence also supports the notion that the brain gets rid of more toxic waste when we’re asleep than when we’re awake. This process is believed to be crucial in getting rid of potentially harmful things such as amyloid, a protein whose build-up in the brain is linked to Alzheimer’s disease. However, a recent study in mice has come to the opposite conclusion. Its authors suggest that in mice, brain clearance is actually lower during sleep – and that previous findings could also be re-interpreted in this way. The brain’s cleaning system Since the brain is an active tissue – with many metabolic and cellular processes happening at any moment – it produces a lot of waste. This waste is removed by our glymphatic system.Cerebrospinal fluid is a crucial part of the glymphatic system. This fluid surrounds the brain, acting as a liquid cushion that protects it from damage and provides it nourishment, so the brain can function normally. During the waste removal process, our cerebrospinal fluid helps transfer old and dirty brain fluid – full of toxins, metabolites and proteins – to outside the brain, and welcomes in new fluid. The waste that has been removed then ends up in the lymphatic system (a part of your immune system), where it’s ultimately eliminated from your body. The glymphatic system was only discovered in the last decade or so. It was first observed in mice, using dyes injected into their brains to study the movement of fluids there. The existence of the glymphatic system has since been confirmed in humans with the use of MRI scans and contrast dyes. Based on the results of animal experiments, scientists concluded the glymphatic system is more active at night, during sleep or when under anaesthesia, than during the day. Other studies have shown this waste removal activity may also vary depending on different conditions – such as sleep position, the type of anaesthetic used, and whether or not the subject’s circadian rhythm was interrupted. The recent study used male mice to examine how the movement of brain fluid differed when animals were awake, asleep and anaesthetised. The researchers injected dyes into the animals’ brains to track the flow of fluid through the glymphatic system. In particular, they examined whether an increase in dye indicated a decrease in fluid movement away from an area, rather than an increase in movement to the area as previous studies had suggested. The former would mean lower clearance via the glymphatic system – and hence less waste being removed. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/health/does-sleep-clear-more-toxins-from-the-brain-than-when-were-awake-research-9369125/

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's plan to celebrate their youngest child Princess Lilibet's third birthday has been revealed. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex would reportedly follow their normal tradition with to mark a special milestone of their daughter as she's turning three on Tuesday (June 4, 2024).However, fans of Harry and Meghan are very much excited to see a new portrait of the little Princess and hope the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would delight them by releasing the new picture, but it does not seem to happen as the couple will carry out celebrations in private. The California-based couple did not release any new photo or video of their eldest son as they marked Prince Archie's fifth birthday last month at their Montecito home. However, Kate Middleton and Prince William release new portraits of their kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince louis to mark their milestones every year. Harry and Meghan, who stepped down as working royals in 2020 and settled in the US to carry out normal working lives, are raising their children much more privately than the Waleses'. Archie and Lilibet's past birthdays videos were included in Harry and Meghan's Netflix docuseries in 2022. The clips showed the American children enjoying celebrations in California alongside their parents and grandmother Doria Ragland. However, Meghan's upcoming Netflix programme, which is tied to her American Riviera Orchard brand, will be filmed away from the family home in Montecito as the couple have reportedly decides to keep them away from the spotlight until they come to a certain age. https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/1196449-lilibets-new-photo-on-third-birthday-prince-harry-meghans-plan-laid-bare

ICELAND. The annual Nordic Travel Retail Seminar took place on 31 May in Reykjavik, with a diverse speaker line-up tackling questions around technology and AI, sustainability and the green agenda and the regional and global economic picture – alongside a focus on the host country Iceland. The event at The Parliament Hotel attracted close to 100 decision makers from Nordic markets – including travel retailers, brand owners and airport companies – and was moderated by The Moodie Davitt Report President Dermot Davitt. After a warm welcome by Nordic Travel Retail Group Board Chair and Rémy-Cointreau Director Nordics Elsebeth Lillienschiold, delegates heard the first of a series of compelling sessions on the future of technology and AI, a central event theme.Expert speakers on this topic included Reykjanes Tech Founder Petur Karl Ingolfsson; disruptor and influencer Amer Mohammed, who is known for his major role in transforming both travel and retailing at Stena Line with a technology lens, as well as introducing the then revolutionary Scan & Pay platform to Coop Sweden, and Tryggvi Freyr Elinarson, whose CV features over 20 years of experience in digital marketing and business development, with a focus on AI and emerging tech. These speakers outlined their predictions for the world of tech advances in 2024 and beyond and in particular highlighted how AI is set to change the way our world works in ways we have yet to imagine. Travel and retail, they noted, is set for a new era of change and disruption. In other sessions, well-known Swedish business journalist Andreas Cervenka offered a big picture view of economic trends in the Nordics and beyond.A key topic facing the channel is how brands and retailers not only act sustainably but also communicate our ‘green’ credentials effectively and compliantly. Pia Kirstine Voldmester, who heads law firm Kromann Reumert’s data protection and marketing/consumer law practice group, presented the implications of the new EU Green Claims Directive, which looks set to challenge how companies make claims about their sustainability credentials from 2026 onwards – and which has excited much concern already in travel retail circles. The day concluded with two varying stories from host market, Iceland. BioEffect CEO Liv Bergthorsdottir told the success story of the Icelandic beauty brand, which has made a big impact for its innovative science-based, nature-linked and ecologically-engineered production. Travel retail is an important market, led to date by the inflight business and key skincare markets such as China and South Korea. The inspirational speaker to end the day was Ragnheiður (Raga) Elín Árnadóttir, who now works for the OECD in Paris and is former Iceland Minister of Industry and Commerce. She was previously also Chair of Duty Free Iceland, which is the prime travel retailer at Keflavik Airport. https://moodiedavittreport.com/nordic-travel-retail-seminar-tackles-challenges-of-technology-sustainability-and-economics-in-reykjavik/

As the Qurban Bayram, also known as Eid al-Adha, festival approaches, the entry of sacrificial animals into Istanbul has begun. Starting from June 1, permission has been granted for the entry of sacrificial animals into Istanbul in anticipation of the upcoming religious festival. At the inspection point established at the Riva Livestock Transport Control Point on the Northern Marmara Motorway, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture teams conducted livestock transport inspections. During the inspection of a truck at the control point, Istanbul Agriculture and Forestry Director Ahmet Yavuz Karaca told the press that the entry of sacrificial animals into Istanbul started on June 1, according to the Sacrificial Services Notice. He added: "As of 6 p.m. today (May 31), according to the information we retrieved from the system, 28,000 animals are currently on the road. Last year, 76,000 cattle and approximately 93,000 sheep and goats were slaughtered. We expect the same numbers again. Our ministry has also announced that there is no problem regarding the sacrificial animals; we have sufficient animals." Providing information about the inspections, Karaca continued: "Since our road controls increase, especially during the Eid period, we conduct them 24/7, 365 days a year, but we tighten them a bit more during this period due to the risk of animal diseases and damages spreading. Before June 1, we had already started our shifts to prevent illegal entries. In this context, 823 sheep, goats and 325 cattle were caught in 23 vehicles during illegal animal transport. An administrative fine of approximately TL 2.6 million ($80,600) was imposed on them and they were taken to the Tuzla Quarantine area." Karaca explained that before transportation, animals are taken to the provincial and district agriculture directorates, where they are registered and inspected. "They undergo health checks. Their vaccinations are verified. This then turns into a veterinary health report. The veterinary health report is issued from the system, and we can see this. In 2010, through a vote by the World Veterinary Organization, our Thrace Region, starting from the European side of Istanbul, was declared a foot-and-mouth disease-free zone. To cross to this side, animals need to meet certain conditions. What are these? Blood tests must be conducted in quarantine. We check if these tests have been done. For example, this truck came from Tokat. Blood tests were conducted, and we checked if the animals in the vehicle matched those listed in the report and if there were any health issues. After verifying all these, they can cross over." Ahmet Yavuz Karaca also reminded citizens who will be performing the sacrificial ritual: "Currently, in Istanbul, we are also dealing with the preparations of the sacrificial animal sales and slaughtering sites. Permissions have been granted for 423 sales sites and 788 slaughtering sites as determined by the provincial and district sacrificial services commissions under the guidance of our Governor's Office. We always tell our citizens that they need to buy from licensed places and have the animals slaughtered by qualified individuals at licensed sites. If they buy from unlicensed places or have the slaughtering done by unqualified individuals at unlicensed sites, they will face administrative fines and encounter uncontrollable issues. This year, Eid al-Adha falls in the summer. The animals need to be slaughtered quickly. Even the internal organs of the carcass must be removed within 10 minutes after the slaughter. This is a very sensitive issue. Just as meat is valuable to us, it is equally valuable to harmful organic microorganisms. When citizens go to licensed places to buy animals, they will find veterinarians there. They can approach them if they see any problem." 'Tarım Cebimde' app Karaca also mentioned that information regarding sacrificial animals can be easily accessed through the "Tarım Cebimde" (Agriculture in my Pocket) mobile application. "Additionally, there is a program that they can download from iOS and Android. Once they download this, there is a section called 'ear tag inquiry.' When they enter the ear tag number in this section, they can see all the information about that animal, such as its age, gender, origin, what vaccinations have been applied, and which farm it has been on," he explained. https://www.dailysabah.com/turkiye/istanbul-begins-receiving-sacrificial-animals-for-eid-al-adha/news

Editor's Note: Our Motor1 colleagues in Germany recently visited an old friend, the Mercedes-Benz W123 wagon. Here's the experience in a special "first drive" review of this legendary Mercedes Estate. I imagine that some of you feel like I do when it comes to these older Mercedes-Benz models. Why on earth didn't I buy one when they were cheap? That would be around 10 to 15 years ago, when every German car from the 1980s wasn't being traded as if a 100-pound sack of diamonds was stuffed under the back seat. The W123 is a prime example of this phoenix-from-the-ashes kind of automotive turnaround. At the end of the 1990s, a Mercedes W123 coupe was the cool car me and my schoolyard friends coveted. But we were largely alone in this opinion—only a classmate of my brother, who was a few years older, drove a 280 CE in manganese brown with light velour upholstery. He was the idol for a 15-year-old boy named Wagner. Yes, I'm talking about me.Coupes in good condition—especially with six-cylinder engines—were not cheap even at that time (from today's perspective they were practically given away), which is why my brother, who was 19 at the time and not exactly in a good financial position, decided to buy a sedan. Nobody really wanted one, and they were cheap. So in March 1998, he bought a wheat yellow 1982 Mercedes-Benz W123 280 E, dressed inside with forest green and packing a four-speed manual transmission. It was in quite good condition with 185,000 kilometers on the clock; he got it for around $1,000. After spending much of our childhood in the old man's pea-green Mercedes 240 D, we felt like kings driving the 280. If I remember correctly, the T-model station wagons weren't exactly hot commodities in the used market 25 years ago. Tattooed furniture restorers, organic farmers, or urban cowboys with full beards weren't coming out of the woodwork to get one like they are now, but at some point over the last two decades, this forefather of the E-Class station wagon became cool. Just take this classic white 280 TE shown here. Built in 1979 and showing nearly 50,000 kilometers on the clock, you'll easily spend $48,000 to buy it today. Of course, the condition is so shockingly wonderful that you're afraid to even breathe near the car. And it's got a four-speed manual to boot. https://www.motor1.com/reviews/721738/mercedes-280-te-review/

Co-hosts West Indies survived a scare to start their Men's T20 World Cup campaign with a five-wicket victory over Papua New Guinea in Guyana. They needed 37 to win off the final 19 balls, but the two-time champions won with six balls to spare. Roston Chase top-scored, hitting an unbeaten 42, as his 40-run partnership with Andre Russell got them over the line. PNG fell to 7-2 in the third over of their innings when opener Tony Ura and Lega Siaka's expressive batting failed to pay off. Opener and captain Assad Vala added 21, with Sese Bau then adding 50 off 43 balls before being bowled by Alzarri Joseph to leave PNG 98-6. Wicketkeeper Kiplin Doriga added 27 not out to haul them up to 136-8. Russell and Joseph claimed two wickets apiece, with Akeal Hosein, Romario Shepherd and Gudakesh Motie all taking one. In response, West Indies opener Johnson Charles was trapped lbw by Alei Nao for a golden duck. Nao also could have dismissed Windies wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran for a duck in the second over, with the technology showing it would have been out if reviewed. After surviving that early scare, Pooran put on a 53-run partnership with Brandon King before holing out on 27. Vala then dismissed King (34) and Sherfane Rutherford (2), with Windies falling from 61-1 to 97-5. The experienced partnership of Chase and Russell got them over the line, though, to avoid an upset. Russell ended the 17th over by pouncing on a long hop to find six before Chase hit a four off the next ball, gifted by a misfield as they scored the runs required in just 13 balls.Of the two T20 World Cup co-hosts, any chance of a home nation succeeding at this World Cup is almost certain to come from the West Indies, with the United States making their debut. While the Caribbean islands are traditionally a forced to be reckoned with in world cricket, having not even qualified for last year's 50-over World Cup in India, West Indies have plenty to prove. Just 48 hours before their World Cup opener in Guyana against 20th-ranked PNG, Windies scored 257 in a victory over Australia in their final warm-up match, marking the cards of many as a team to watch. With two wickets inside 13 balls, they set an early tone for what could have been a convincing home victory, but allowed their associate nation opponents back into the game, posting a score that was by no means challenging, but at the very least, competitive. A few pieces of sloppy fielding and not too much offered in the form of aggressive bowling allowed PNG hope, highlighted at the end of their innings when a no-ball from Joseph gifted three extra runs. Losing opener Charles in the second over meant the Windies were tested and had PNG been more confident in reviewing, it would have been 8-2 later that over. Partnerships between Powell and King and, later, Chase and Russell eventually got Windies over the line, but with this being among the easier of West Indies' Group C matches, much more will be needed later in the campaign. Like they did against PNG, West Indies should, in theory, make light work of Uganda, but will by no means be certain of victory against New Zealand and Afghanistan. Ahead of the toss, Windies captain Rovman Powell said there was "expectation" on the nation to do well, and he admitted afterwards his side "weren't quite at our best", adding "we were 60% there". They will hope to become the first side to win the T20 World Cup as a home nation, but more performances like their meek win over Papua New Guinea means that progression into the Super 8s is by no means a certainty. https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/articles/c1ww0x7d13zo

The pain from getting kidney stones is unbearable! If you’ve ever experienced it, you know how crucial it is to avoid anything that might trigger another episode. If you’re trying to keep those painful kidney stones at bay, there are three particular items you need to avoid — luncheon meat, soda pop, and dried fruits. Dr Janine Bowring, a naturopathic shared a video on Instagram, talking about the three worst foods for your kidney that one must avoid if they are prone to developing kidney stones.Dr P Vamshi Krishna, consultant urologist, at CARE Hospitals Banjara Hills, Hyderabad says, “Individuals prone to kidney stones should consider avoiding or limiting their intake of luncheon meat, soda pop, and dried fruits.” Luncheon meat, also known as deli meat or cold cuts, is a type of precooked or cured meat that is typically sliced and served cold in sandwiches or on charcuterie boards. Luncheon meats are usually preserved by curing, smoking, or adding preservatives. These meats are often processed and can include: Ham, turkey, chicken, roast beef, salami, bologna, and pepperoni, he explains.Ingredients or compounds contributing to kidney stone formation High salt, sodium based preservatives , chemical laden taste enhancers are the compounds contributing to kidney stone, says clinical nutritionist Ishi Khosla. Dr Krishna adds that ingredients or compounds contributing to kidney stone formation are:Luncheon meat: They can be high in sodium, fat, and sometimes added sugars and nitrates/nitrites, making them less ideal for frequent consumption, especially for individuals with certain health concerns such as kidney stone formation. These are often high in sodium and animal protein. Excessive sodium can increase calcium levels in the urine, while high animal protein intake can increase uric acid production, both contributing to kidney stone formation. Soda pop: Many sodas, especially colas, contain high levels of phosphoric acid, which can increase the risk of kidney stones. Additionally, the high sugar content can lead to obesity and insulin resistance, which are risk factors for kidney stones. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/kidney-stones-avoid-three-foods-9358836/

Gautam Gambhir has stated that he would "love to coach" the Indian team if given a chance. With Rahul Dravid set to vacate the position of head coach of the Indian men's cricket team after the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, the BCCI have invited new applicants for the role. Gautam Gambhir, who spearheaded Kolkata Knight Riders to a title win in the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League, confirmed his interest in the position. "I would love to coach the Indian team," Gambhir said at an event in Abu Dhabi. "There is no bigger honour. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team." "You are representing 140 crore Indians. And more across the globe as well. And when you represent India, how can it get bigger than that?"A few days back, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had stated that the board prefers "individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks." Gambhir, who played a key role in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup win in 2007 and the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup win in 2011, will be one of the frontrunners for the job. "How can I help India win the World Cup - I think it's not me that will help India win the World Cup, it is 140 crore Indians that will help India win the World Cup," Gambhir said. "If everyone starts praying for us, and we start playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup. The most important thing is to be fearless and yes, I would love to coach India," the former India opener added confirming his interest in the job. https://www.icc-cricket.com/tournaments/t20cricketworldcup/news/world-cup-winner-puts-his-hand-up-for-india-coaching-role

Welcome to the Wall Street Week newsletter, giving you investing food for thought from our conversations on Bloomberg Television with some of the best minds on Global Wall Street. I'm David Westin, and this week we talked with Glenn August of Oak Hill Advisors about credit market reaction to interest rate policy and Niall Ferguson of the Hoover Institution about Cold War II with China and the risk of a declining world po[CENSORED]tion. If you're not yet a subscriber, sign up here for this newsletter and for daily markets analysis from Bloomberg Surveillance. One might have thought that 500 basis points of interest-rate hikes would damp the markets a bit. But right now, it’s hard to tell, and Glenn August, founder and CEO of Oak Hill Advisors, said that’s in part because of how well the economy is doing. Six months ago, he talked with us about some $1 trillion of potentially troubled refinancing, but since then “the cost of financing has come down 50 basis points.” Why? A limited supply of new deals means less demand for credit, he said. In addition, “there’s more equity in deals than there’s ever been.” All of which has led to “the market basically extending maturities as opposed to debt getting paid down.” So given the strength in the market, why did Jamie Dimon warn this week that there could be “hell to pay” in private credit? August said it’s always important to pay attention to Dimon, but the JPMorgan CEO was probably focused on some selective “aggressive underwriting.”Six years ago, Niall Ferguson of the Hoover Institution coined the term “Cold War II” to describe the West’s relations with China, and since then others have embraced the name. This version is different because there is an “intertwining of economies that really wasn’t a feature of Cold War I,” said Ferguson, who is also a Bloomberg Opinion columnist. At the same time, a military showdown with China would be extraordinarily dangerous, so it makes sense that the US is “pursuing a primarily economic or technological containment strategy.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-06-01/us-economic-strength-defies-expectations-oak-hill-s-august-says

Ford is returning to Pikes Peak later next month with a wild electric pickup. The Blue Oval has been teasing the “EV demonstrator” since March, but today, the automaker gives us a complete look at the truck while revealing it can generate 6,000 pounds of downforce at 150 miles per hour. The SuperTruck Demonstrator will achieve that figure with its equally wild aerodynamics. The low-slung pickup features a massive goose-neck wing that hangs off the back, towering above the roof of the cab. It also has a wide front splitter, outlets behind the front wheels, and a massive rear diffuser. Ford developed the truck in partnership with STARD.Ford didn’t provide any further details about its electric SuperTruck beyond how much downforce it’ll make. However, it does have some styling similarities to the SuperVan 4.2 that the automaker campaigned in last year’s hillclimb event. That, too, had a massive wing and an aggressive aero kit that kept it planted through the course’s 156 turns. Its triple-motor setup produced 1,400 horsepower. The new pickup could have a similar setup, but we’ll have to wait for more details. The Ford SuperVan 4.0 had four motors that made 1,972 hp.This is Ford’s second electric demonstrator. It released the F-150 Switchgear, built in collaboration with RTR, earlier this year. The company based it on the production Lightning platform, enhancing its off-road capability with skid plats, composite body panels, and a new suspension. Ford will likely continue teasing the pickup leading up to the event’s 102nd running that begins on June 23. We'll likely learn more details between now and when it runs up the hill. Romain Dumas, the current Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record holder, will pilot the Ford. But the Blue Oval won’t be the only automaker there with an EV. A modified Hyundai Ioniq 5 will also tackle the famous hillclimb course later in June. https://www.motor1.com/news/721735/ford-lightning-supertruck-pikes-peak-downforce/
