Java Development Kit (JDK) 26, a planned update to standard Java due in March 2026, now has its first three features slated for it, with the latest being increased application throughput when using the G1 garbage collector (GC). Proposed September 8, this JEP (JDK Enhancement Proposal), G1 GC: Improve throughput by reducing synchronization, joins two previously slotted features, HTTP/3 for the Client API and Removal of the Java Applet API. The G1 GC proposal is intended to improve application throughput and latency when using the G1 garbage collector by reducing the amount of synchronization required between application threads and GC threads. Goals include reducing the G1 garbage collector’s synchronization overhead, reducing the size of the injected code for G1’s write barriers, and maintaining the overall architecture of G1, with no changes to user interaction. The G1 GC proposal notes that although G1, which is the default garbage collector of the HotSpot JVM, is designed to balance latency and throughput, achieving this balance sometimes impacts application performance adversely compared to throughput-oriented garbage collectors such as the Parallel and Serial collectors:Relative to Parallel, G1 performs more of its work concurrently with the application, reducing the duration of GC pauses and thus improving latency. Unavoidably, this means that application threads must share the CPU with GC threads, and coordinate with them. This synchronization both lowers throughput and increases latency. A short-term release of Java backed by six months of Premier-level support, JDK 26 will follow the September 16 release of JDK 25, which is a Long-Term Support (LTS) release backed by several years of Premier-level support. The HTTP/3 proposal calls for allowing Java libraries and applications to interact with HTTP/3 servers with minimal code changes. Goals include updating the HTTP Client API to send and receive HTTP/3 requests and responses; requiring only minor changes to the HTTP Client API and Java application code; and allowing developers to opt in to HTTP/3 as opposed to changing the default protocol version from HTTP/2 to HTTP/3. HTTP/3 is considered a major version of the HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) data communications protocol for the web. Version 3 was built on the IETF QUIC (Quick UDP Internet Connections) transport protocol, which emphasizes flow-controlled streams, low-latency connection establishment, network path migration, and security among its capabilities. Removal of the Java Applet API, now considered obsolete, is also targeted for JDK 26. The Applet API was deprecated for removal in JDK 17 in 2021. The API is obsolete because neither recent JDK releases nor current web browsers support applets, according to the proposal. There is no reason to keep the unused and unusable API, the proposal states. Other possible features for JDK 26 include features to be previewed in JDK 25, such as structured concurrency; primitive types in patterns, instanceof, and switch; and PEM (Privacy-Enhanced Mail) encodings of cryptographic objects. An experimental feature in JDK 25, JDK Flight Recorder CPU-time profiling, may also be included in JDK 26. https://www.infoworld.com/article/4050993/jdk-26-the-new-features-in-java-26.html

It is evident that thrift stores offer a wide array of intriguing items. A Reddit user acquired a GeForce RTX 3060 12GB, previously regarded as one of the best GPUs, for only $4.99. Despite its used condition, the Ampere-powered graphics card, presumably bought from a Red White & Blue Thrift Store, functioned without issue, as reported by the user. The GeForce RTX 3060 is among the most po[CENSORED]r graphics cards by gamers, and it's held that position for a remarkably long time on Steam. Although its successor, the GeForce RTX 4060, has recently established itself as the preferred choice for Steam gamers, the GeForce RTX 3060 continues to maintain a strong second position. Even though its shader power might struggle to keep up with some of the latest games, its 12GB of memory ensures that the card at least doesn't experience major performance cliffs with the latest titles. Despite being launched approximately five years ago, the GeForce RTX 3060 has preserved a significant portion of its value. Initially introduced for $329, customized models now start at $256, approximately 22% below the initial MSRP. Even second-hand GeForce RTX 3060 graphics cards can still go for as much as $180 on eBay.A GeForce RTX 3060 for $4.99, is a steal of the century, regardless of whether it's used. It's one of those gambles in life that tends to offer more advantages than disadvantages. According to the Reddit discussion, the fortunate purchaser obtained the MSI GeForce RTX 3060 Ventus 2X 12G OC, a custom model with a factory overclock. A new MSI GeForce RTX 3060 Ventus 2X 12G OC retails for $299.97, so the Redditor only paid 2% of what the graphics card is worth. According to the serial number, the graphics card was manufactured in 2021, indicating it's probably from an early production batch. Although MSI provides a limited three-year warranty on its graphics cards, the Reddit user ran out of luck, as the warranty period expired on August 16, 2024. As a used graphics card acquired from a thrift store, the number of previous owners and the extent of its usage remain unknown. Although it is currently operational, maintenance, such as a deep cleaning or reapplying thermal paste, may be advisable. We often hear fortunate accounts of Redditors discovering computer hardware at locations such as pawn shops, thrift stores, or clearance sections within local Walmart stores. This does not imply that you should dedicate your life to hardware hunting. However, if you happen to pass by such a location and have a few free minutes, it may be worthwhile to take a brief look. There is always the potential to uncover items of value, which may represent an upgrade for your system. https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/lucky-gamer-scores-one-of-the-most-po[CENSORED]r-graphics-cards-ever-for-usd4-99-nvidias-rtx-3060-12gb-found-for-less-than-a-big-mac-at-thrift-shop

We are currently living through the golden age of being able to play console-quality games on our phones, either natively or through streaming. This is the dream, probably. There are lots of controller options out there for people to choose from. There’s just using a regular console controller over Bluetooth and either mounting your phone on a stand or using a dongle to connect it to the controller itself. But then there are also dedicated snap on controller accessories, like the Backbone One, Razer Kishi, low cost Laser Gaming Controller attachment, or the new Backbone Pro. Each of those options have their own pros and cons. After over a month of using the Backbone Pro, I’ve found that it has far more pro than con. There’s a lot to love in those specs, mostly the battery life. It is a bit weird to not use Hall Effect sensors in the thumb sticks, not a choice I would have made. But the rest is about right for what you want in a snap on phone controller accessory.’What makes the BackBone Pro special is that you can snap it onto a phone, which is expected for an attachable phone controller, but you can also use it as a Bluetooth controller on a PC, Mac, Switch, tablet, smart TV, etc. That means you only have to bring one controller for a weekend away, and still use all your devices, rather than having to choose or overpack. In the box you also get some magnetic attachments that mean you can adjust the size of the phone slot, so you can use it with or without a case (assuming your case isn’t particularly chunky). I could use the Backbone Pro with my Quadlock case on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, and while it wasn’t a perfect fit, it fit enough that I feel confident saying it’ll work with most standard cases. Backbone Pro: play experience I’ve spent a lot of time playing with the BackBone Pro on planes, trains and beach cabanas this past month, and for the most part it is a damn good time. It’s surprisingly comfortable in my hands. It’s not quite a perfect fit, with some parts feeling a touch too big (the base of the grip is a bit too thick to nestle nicely in the hand), and other parts feeling a touch cramped (the right thumb stick), but there are so many different hand sizes that it’s impossible to please everyone. Another thing I like is how well balanced it is. The controller is noticeably heavier than the BackBone One, but that extra weight doesn’t make it feel heavy, it just feels more substantial. More premium. More deliberate. The rear buttons are now a must on any controller with ‘pro’ in the title, and were super easy to assign purpose in the app. The longer I can put off ever again having to press L3 to sprint, the better, so back buttons are essential for how I play. They’re well positioned, and the larger size means that they’ll adapt well to a wide variety of hand sizes. What’s weird is how small the thumb stick grips are. The sticks themselves are the same size as a normal stick, but the spot where you put your thumb is oddly small. There’s enough room on the body of the controller to make them a standard size, and yet they are fun size. It’s not uncomfortable per se, but it does take some adjustment. Not using Hall Effect sticks is still a bit disappointing, however they still feel responsive and comfortable to wield. The triggers do have Hall Effect sensors, and the lightly textured buttons are nice to touch. The limited actuation distance is somewhat bothersome when playing Forza Horizon 5 on Xbox Game Cloud, but it’s perfect for shooters such as Fortnite. Backbone Pro: phone battery If you also have perpetually low phone battery, then you’ll be pleased to know that the experience of playing while charging is vastly improved over the BackBone One. The parallel USB-C charging charges your phone when the BackBone Pro is plugged in, and the controller grabs some of that charge at the same time, too, keeping everything ticking along nicely. The USB-C port placement doesn’t get in the way of playing, with that location in the bottom right allowing the cable to hang down out of the way. It’s the same with the 3.5mm jack on the left hand side. It’s disappointing that it doesn’t have built-in rumble. I did still experience some of the iPhone’s haptic feedback which was nice, though that’s only helpful when playing on, well, iPhone. Playing games on Mac just felt like they were missing something without the rumble. That said, on a portable device, trade offs must be made between experience and battery life, and having one fewer thing to charge during a long flight is my preference if a decision must be made. Actually sitting down and playing was comfortable for hours at a time. It took 2-3 hours before I started to feel much strain in my hands from wrapping around an unusual object for an extended period of time. It’s definitely using my hand muscles in a slightly different way to, say, an Xbox controller or DualSense. But the longer I played over time, the better it felt. Backbone Pro: subscription details In 2025, everything has a subscription attached to it. The future was a mistake. The Backbone+ subscription service is part of the otherwise excellent Backbone app (which is where customisation and firmware updates live). For free you get access to firmware updates, button remapping, the ability to take screenshots, ‘gaming news’, and syncing across multiple devices. The ~$50 a year subscription then gets you the ability to launch all your games from the app, limited in-game perks and rewards, personalised game recommendations, the ability to capture and share 1080p 60fps video with cloud storage, in-app voice and text chat with friends, and the ability to live-stream directly to Twitch. Most of that is stuff that people might be able to do for free in other apps, but I’m sure it adds enough value for some people to be worth it. You get a few months free when you first launch the app with the controller, so users will have the opportunity to try before they buy. Backbone Pro: portability I got the optional case with my Backbone Pro, which protects it in my bag more than just throwing it in there naked, though it does add bulk. The shape means that it’s pretty easy to pack. I took it in my backpack on a week-long work trip where I only took carry on, and didn’t feel like it was taking up any unearned space. At less than 200g, the controller itself is hardly burdensome, and there’s something about loading up a game while sitting on the beach that feels delightfully decadent. Backbone Pro: verdict I really like the Backbone Pro a lot. There’s a tonne of flexibility in how and where you play that most of the other mobile controllers just don’t have. There is still quite a bit of room for improvement, and I likely would have made some different choices when designing my ultimate controller. But as someone who really liked the Backbone One, the Backbone Pro is an excellent upgrade that has drastically increased how often I play console games on my phone. https://www.screenhub.com.au/news/reviews/backbone-pro-review-a-controller-upgrade-for-console-games-on-phones-2678869/

Here are last month’s top grossing mobile games based on in-app purchase earnings, according to Appmagic data. These IAP estimates do not include ad revenue, web shop spend, Apple and Google’s 30% cut or revenue from China’s Android ecosystem. There’s commentary on which way the biggest earners are trending, and other interesting tidbits from the top 20 and beyond below. In between these monthly updates, you can keep tabs on Appmagic’s top grossing and top downloads charts anytime here.August was another good month for Honor of Kings, to say the least – it’s back in that $170-$175m bracket after a couple of blips in March and June. But arguably the biggest news in the chart this month for the number-crunchers paying attention is the return of Roblox’s iOS revenue data – it had completely disappeared from all mobile game revenue tracking services for a couple of months, but it is now back, it seems. Roblox earned over $157m on mobile platforms in August, a new record. It spiked in July and continued to rake it in during August, driven by kids on their summer holidays plus of course the mania around Grow A Garden and Steal A Brainrot. And yet it was still not quite enough to unseat Honor of Kings at the top.PUBG Mobile is surging too – up to over $130m in August, its best month of IAP revenue since January 2023. The game had a Transformers collab and added a new Bonus Pass among an array of new skins in August, which may explain that rise. There’s also a big 4.0 update dropping this month, so that momentum may well continue. Whiteout Survival is back up past the $125m mark again after a gentle revenue dip in the last couple of months, while close contender LastWar is close behind, down about $12m month-on-month at $125.8m. August was a pretty typical month for regular top ten trio Royal Match, Monopoly Go and Candy Crush Saga – only the latter grew IAP revenue month-on-month by more than a couple of million, compared to July’s figures. But there was a dramatic rise for Niantic’s Pokémon Go – now under new ownership, of course – which is up nine places month-on-month. It broke the $70m barrier for the first time since July 2024; the game’s Dark Skies event gave Niantic a nice bump halfway through August, but the real blockbuster was the Max Finale event linked to Pokémon Go Fest on August 23. In tenth spot the Clash Royale comeback continues: it posted its best month of IAP earnings since way back in May 2017. Clash Royale was previously earning about $12-15m per month throughout late 2024 and early 2025, but earned just over $68m last month, going some way to replicate the much-publicised Brawl Stars comeback of 2024.August’s top grossing games: 11-20 11. Kingshot (Century): $67m 12. Fate/Grand Order (Aniplex/Sony): $55.7m 13. Pokémon TCG Pocket (The Pokémon Company): $53.3m 14. Gossip Harbor: Merge & Story (Microfun): $53m 15. Coin Master (Moon Active): $49.4m 16. Delta Force (Tencent): $38.3m 17. Township (Playrix): $35.5m 18. Gardenscapes (Playrix): $33.7m 19. Umamusume: Pretty Derby (Cygames/CyberAgent): $31.3m 20. Dungeon Fighter Mobile (Tencent): $31.6mOutside the top ten, Century Games’ Kingshot continues to scale quickly, hitting nearly $67m in August, while Fate/Grand Order has rocketed back into the top earners after a while away, suddenly jumping up to ~$56m, its best haul since August 2022. Pokémon TCG Pocket is up on a soft month in July to over $53m, and Gossip Harbor posted yet another best-ever month, with over $53m earned in August. Umamusume: Pretty Derby also maintained its recent run at around $32m after getting localised and launched for English-speaking markets. The biggest losers last month were Love and Deepspace and Honkai: Star Rail, though. They dropped 10 and 20 places in the rankings respectively, with Paper Games’ romance game down by about $12.5m month-on-month to $26.6m. Star Rail’s drop was more dramatic as July’s beefy $70m haul was slashed to ~$24m in August. https://mobilegamer.biz/augusts-top-grossing-mobile-games-2/

You know something is off in Battlefield when piloting a multi-million dollar metal box with a building-leveling cannon mounted on the end is a bigger risk than hoofing it across the map. That was the state of last month's Battlefield 6 beta: tanks, helicopters, jets, and especially jeeps could never get much room to vroom before getting blasted by any number of anti-armor rockets, laser-guided missiles, stationary cannons, mines, or sticky explosives. A month ahead of launch, we have our first acknowledgement from DICE that vehicle balance needs work via lead producer David Sirland. The exchange began with a video of leaked Operation Firestorm gameplay depicting an engineer sniping and firing rockets from the map's highest tower. To critics of Battlefield 6's controversial "open weapons" default ruleset, the scenario is a perfect example of why letting any class use any gun disrupts the balance of Battlefield. "A classic demonstration of why open classes don't work. Support with ammo resupply/sniper, and APS gadget and engi[neer] with sniper/launchers on Firestorm getting constantly resupplied. It just creates these ridiculously broken combinations," wrote Battlefield YouTuber GhostGaming."That button still exists (as in the originals) & the fact we have more [anti-tank] on the map isn't really a problem either?" Sirland wrote. "Let's not pretend this type of gameplay is effective in any shape or form, it really isn't (unless you can safeguard the pos - which can be cleansed with fire :)"Whether or not you agree with Sirland's assessment—if you ask me, an engineer holding a sniper rifle is an affront to the very idea of the class system—it was Sirland's next response, pivoting toward vehicles/anti-air in general, that's most interesting. Responding to someone who made the point that engineers carrying up to five rockets and powerful anti-tank mines means "infantry is more dangerous to vehicles than vehicles are to infantry," Sirland agreed it's a balance problem that the studio is currently grappling with."That is a balance issue wholesale, not specific to this special situation, however. And one we are actively working on," he replied. That said, Sirland suggested undercooked vehicles aren't too big of a deal at this stage of the game, and said it's at least better than the alternative. "Rather have too weak vehicles over too powerful to start. It's a tricky one as players get better at using them over time as well." Perhaps that's true of tanks, APCs, and aerial vehicles, but what about my poor jeep? For four long days, I watched hundreds of teammates ignore my honks of friendship, opting to run an extra 30 seconds instead of climbing aboard. Give those gunners some armor plating at least! We'll see what's in store for rocket pockets and vehicle armor when Battlefield 6 launches October 10. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/battlefield-6-producer-acknowledges-vehicles-were-underpowered-in-the-beta-but-says-its-better-than-the-alternative-rather-have-too-weak-vehicles-over-too-powerful/

Apple's annual hardware launch event is all set to take place on September 9. This year's keynote has been dubbed ‘Awe Dropping', fueling speculation about the highly anticipated products that are expected to be unveiled. At the heart of the excitement is the Cupertino-based tech giant's next-generation iPhone lineup, ubiquitously known as the iPhone 17 series. While all of the focus is on the new iPhone 17 Air that will arrive as a competitor to the Galaxy S25 Edge in the ultra-slim smartphone space, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are also in line to receive several quality-of-life upgrades. With the event just a day away, anticipation among tech enthusiasts has reached its annual peak. Here are the five most significant iPhone 17 Pro leaks ahead of Apple's ‘Awe Dropping' event, which shape it up to be an exciting offering.2025 is expected to be a second consecutive year where Apple upgrades the telephoto cameras on its Pro iPhone models. Following last year's switch to the 5X sensor on the iPhone 16 Pro, a telephoto sensor upgrade for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max is said to be on the cards once again. As per reports, Apple could offer up to 8X optical zoom on this year's Pro models thanks to a new telephoto sensor, enabling enhanced zoom capabilities. The brand is speculated to bump up the resolution to 48 megapixels, making the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max the first models to sport triple 48-megapixel cameras. For reference, both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max feature a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, which is capable of shooting in up to 5X zoom. Vapour Chamber Cooling Another big upgrade expected on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max is said to be in terms of thermal management. Last year, Apple introduced a new graphene-based thermal management system to mitigate heating issues that had plagued the iPhone 15 series. The company is expected to upgrade the thermal system again, with the inclusion of a new vapour chamber.A vapour chamber generally consists of a vacuum-sealed pipe containing a small amount of liquid, which functions as a passive heat spreader. It disperses heat away from the crucial CPU and GPU components, enabling the handset to deliver a consistent performance and deal with graphics-intensive workloads for an extended period. On the iPhone 17 Pro models, the vapour chamber is expected to accompany the new A19 Pro chip, potentially mitigating heat-related throttling issues.Bigger Battery If leaks are to be believed, the iPhone 17 Pro Max could have the biggest battery of any iPhone to date. It is speculated to come with a 5,000mAh battery capacity. While Apple does not officially disclose the battery capacities of its iPhone models, the current flagship — iPhone 16 Pro Max — is reported to have a 4,685mAh battery. The iPhone 17 Pro Max, however, is expected to surpass the 5,000mAh mark. Consequently, the phone's thickness could be bumped up to 8.725mm to accommodate the larger battery pack.Camera Island Redesign With the iPhone 17 series, Apple is rumoured to transition back to Aluminium from the titanium material that it has used for the last two generations. The iPhone 17 Pro models could feature a redesigned back panel that is half glass, half aluminium. The former is speculated to occupy the bottom half of the purported handsets, housing the new camera island. Meanwhile, the top half will feature glass material, featuring the MagSafe coil for wireless charging. The camera island is rumoured to have a rectangular shape, spanning the entire top half of the phone, placed horizontally. This would be a major design shift compared to the traditional square-shaped module that debuted with the iPhone 11 Pro models in 2019. https://www.gadgets360.com/mobiles/features/iphone-17-pro-max-five-biggest-leaks-8x-zoom-vapour-chamber-cooling-more-9237840

Windows 11 25H2 is not out yet, but that hasn't stopped media outlets from benchmarking the upcoming Windows 11 version. Phoronix tested Windows 11 25H2 against Canonical's upcoming Ubuntu 25.10, Ubuntu 24.0.3 LTS, and Windows 11 24H2 in a head-to-head benchmarking battle to see if 25H2 delivers any new performance improvements. Sadly, though, Phoronix's testing revealed that 25H2 was unable to outperform 24H2, even technically losing to its predecessor in many tests. The four operating systems were tested using a Ryzen 9 9950X paired with 32GB of DDR5 memory. Phoronix benchmarked a variety of applications (41 benchmarks in total), including LuxCoreRender, Embree, Intel Open Image Denoise, OSPRay, and IndigoBench. If you are familiar with previous Phoronix Windows vs Linux testing, it should come as no surprise that Ubuntu came out on top. Across Phoronix's 41 benchmark geomean, both versions of Ubuntu managed to outperform Windows 11 25H2 by around 15% respectively. Looking at the Windows operating systems exclusively, 25H2 provided precisely 0% more performance compared to 24H2 across Phoronix's entire benchmarking suite, on average.Phoronix's individual numbers for each benchmark further elaborate on 25H2's underwhelming performance behavior. Many of the individual benchmarks show 25H2 and 24H2 competing for third and fourth place, with 24H2 trading blows with 25H2. For example, in LuxCoreRender, Windows 11 24H2 was 2% more performant than 25H2. But in ASTC Encoder 5.0, 25H2 was almost 2% faster than 24H2. Windows 11 25H2's underwhelming benchmarking performance is not surprising to see. Microsoft's upcoming version of Windows 11 is based on the same servicing branch as 24H2, meaning that both versions are largely identical under the hood. In fact, Windows 11 24H2 already has many of 25H2's features incorporated in a disabled state. 25H2 merely turns these disabled features on and guarantees their availability, while 24H2 users will have to wait for these features to be turned on incrementally over time. This is a far cry from 24H2, which was a major overhaul over 23H2, including major parts of the OS being rewritten in Rust. As a result, 25H2 is also one of the smallest "major" updates Microsoft has created for Windows 11 thus far. 25H2 includes just a handful of new features, while also removing some existing features, such as PowerShell 2.0 and the Windows Management Instrumentation command-line. 25H2 will also be delivered as an enablement package, requiring just one restart to update from 24H2 to 25H2 (just like a standard cumulative update). https://www.tomshardware.com/software/windows/early-windows-11-25h2-benchmarks-confirm-the-update-provides-no-performance-improvements-over-24h2

Video gaming can be an expensive hobby. Nintendo’s latest Mario Kart game, Mario Kart World, released in June, costs $80, and it’s widely expected that Grand Theft Audio VI, coming out next year, will top $100. So, are games becoming unaffordable, or do gamers not know how good they’ve got it? Super Mario is known as one of the most po[CENSORED]r game characters globally. But some fans haven’t been thrilled with the price tag on his latest outing, Mario Kart World. If you look online, you’ll find legions of gamers complaining that they’re now having to fork out a day’s wages to buy the latest titles. So do they have a point? Well, maybe — or maybe not. “I did an analysis for the U.S. video game markets, and I found that when you account for inflation, new games were valued between $90 to $100. And so when the new prices from publishers are coming out at the $80 or $90 mark, they feel expensive,” said Sam Naji, a video games analyst who’s been working in the industry for more than 15 years. “In relative terms, when you look at historical prices, they're actually on par with what they were before.” So, why might games feel more expensive, even if they’re not? One argument is we’ve been spoiled. Huge games like Fortnite, for example, are completely free to download and play, making their money instead from microtransactions in the game. This impacts public perception of the whole industry. Naji added that “full price games are now competing against those games, which are essentially free; therefore, consumers feel that they're paying somewhat more than they should be.” There is an argument, though, that even if game prices have remained relatively stable in real terms, they should, by rights, have gotten cheaper. Patrick Moran, curator of an international touring exhibition about the history of video gaming called Game On, said the reason games on early consoles, like the Nintendo Entertainment System, were expensive had very little to do with the game itself — and a lot to do with how it was packaged. “Cartridges, because they contained microchips and particularly memory chips, were really expensive. So about half the cost of the retail cost could be just the actual production of the cartridge,” said Moran. “And then that really changed in the mid-90s when you moved to CDs, when you suddenly had very, very cheap media.” The reason games didn’t get cheaper then is, apparently, the same reason they don’t get cheaper now — even though they can be downloaded directly, cutting packaging and shipping costs completely. And that’s because of what consumers have come to expect. Puzzle game Monument Valley released the third title in its series earlier this year, and Jane Campbell, a team member of that puzzle game, said more and more work goes into each game. “Every time we're making a new game, we want to make something that is bigger and newer and utilizing new gaming mechanics and bringing new surprises to our audience,” she said. “So the scope of games always increases, and that increase in scope looks at bigger team sizes.” Add to that an increasingly competitive environment — with more and more games coming out every year, as well as ever-rising wage costs — and Campbell said the cost of making a game has increased exponentially. “I think game companies tend to undervalue their games and sell them at lower price points than perhaps they should. It is very hard to make your money back on the investment of the games that we make,” Campbell added. “Consumers obviously want to pay lower prices. So it's very, very hard and it's very complicated to make money as a game company in this current space.” If you buy a cinema ticket for $10-$15, you’ll be entertained for a couple of hours. A good game, on the other hand, can keep you hooked for 20 or even 200 hours. And that’s got to be worth something. https://www.marketplace.org/episode/2025/09/08/have-video-games-become-unaffordable

In a recent interview with IGN, Keanu Reeves offered a spark of hope that he may return as foul-mouthed rockerboy Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2, the currently in preproduction follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077. This is far from a confirmation, though, and the original game's many ending permutations complicate the character's potential return. Asked if he'd be willing to reprise the character in Cyberpunk 2—formerly codenamed Project Orion—Reeves said: "Absolutely, I'd love to play Johnny Silverhand again." And that's it, that's all he said on the matter. But it's more than we had previously, and it also raises questions as to how CDPR could continue his story. A very remote possibility is reflecting Cyberpunk 2077 choices through Witcher or Mass Effect-style save importing, but that doesn't feel like a good fit. 2077 was a very personal, self-contained story, one where putting in that effort doesn't particularly feel worth it. That's also before you consider that we likely won't even see Cyberpunk 2 before 2030—10 years after Cyberpunk 2077's release—and that it'd be a pretty crazy ask to cut Keanu Reeves a check for content not all players will see.More likely would be an appearance through some kind of flashback or braindance (Cyberpunk's VR memory playback)-related cameo, or even the existence of a second "construct" or virtual copy of Johnny, like the one we see in 2077. Revisiting the character through other media, like the Edgerunners anime, also seems like a sensible route, either instead of or in addition to a Cyberpunk 2 appearance. This is all just angels dancing on the head of a pin, though, barring an official announcement from Reeves or CD Projekt. I was always taken with Reeves' performance in 2077: He's with you through the entire game, providing the commentary and character of an RPG companion without bumbling in your way like they so often do in first person RPGs. I likened him to an asshole Greek Chorus in my review of the Phantom Liberty expansion, though he doesn't seem to have been to everyone's tastes. Silverhand hater and former PCG editor James Davenport dubbed him "John Prick" in their review of the base game, and even with my love of the character, I gotta concede that's a generationally sick burn. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/keanu-reeves-would-love-to-play-johnny-silverhand-again-in-cyberpunk-2-but-thatd-be-a-tough-needle-to-thread-with-how-the-first-game-ends/

The US jobs market weakened further in August, raising new fears about the health of the world's largest economy. Employers added just 22,000 jobs last month, fewer than expected, while the unemployment rate ticked up from 4.2% to 4.3%, according to the Labor Department. The figures cap a string of shaky data this week on the job market and add to the concerns that spiked last month, when the Labor Department said hiring in May and June had been far weaker than it had initially estimated. On Friday, the department said its latest estimates showed the US actually lost jobs in June, the first such decline since 2020.Investors, who had already been betting that the US central bank would respond to the weakening labour market with a cut to interest rates at its meeting this month, said that move was now all but certain. "The warning bell that rang in the labour market a month ago just got louder," said Olu Sonola, head of US economic research for Fitch Ratings. US President Donald Trump responded to the signs of slowdown in August by firing the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, accusing her, without evidence, of rigging the numbers to make him look bad. But analysts say the troubles in the job market are partly due to the president's sweeping changes to tariff and immigration policy, which economists have consistently warned would hurt the economy, by raising costs and uncertainty for firms. His administration has also cut government spending, firing thousands of government workers. The Labor Department said the federal government shed 15,000 positions last month. Manufacturing and construction firms also reported payroll declines, offsetting gains in health care. "Four straight months of manufacturing job losses stand out," Mr Sonola said. "It's hard to argue that tariff uncertainty isn't a key driver of this weakness." https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn0xe5dvp47o

The ocean is not evenly risky for wildlife. Plastic can do outsized damage in places that do not look choked with trash at the surface.A new global assessment shows that danger spikes where plastic overlaps with rich marine life and chemical pollution. The researchers tracked four distinct ways plastics hurt animals, from eating and entanglement to acting as carriers and leaching chemicals. The research team, led by Yanxu Zhang at Tulane University School of Science and Engineering (SSE), built a global picture of ecological risk rather than a count of floating bottles. Biomass is the total mass of living organisms in a given area. The researchers combined plastic models with maps of animal biomass to show where contact is most likely and most harmful. The study was not only focused on where debris drifts, but also on how risk changes for animals of different body sizes and habitats. A 2020 analysis estimated that 19 to 23 million metric tons of plastic waste entered aquatic ecosystems in 2016. That is a throughput problem, which means risk will keep spreading unless inputs drop. How plastic hurts animals Animals eat plastic, become entangled in it, ingest pollutants that cling to it, and absorb chemicals that leach from it. This study charts each of these pathways on a global scale. The team defines epipelagic species as those living near the surface, roughly the top 650 feet. Mesopelagic species live between about 650 and 3,300 feet. It is important to distinguish between these zones because plastic concentrations and animal densities do not line up in simple ways. “Plastic pollution in the ocean is widely recognized as a global concern, but the ecological risks it poses remain poorly understood. We wanted to fill this knowledge gap by systematically assessing how plastics interact with marine life and ecosystems through multiple risk pathways,” said Zhang. Plastic risk maps reveal hotspots Hotspots show up in the mid-latitude North Pacific and North Atlantic, parts of the North Indian Ocean, and coastal East Asia. Those areas have abundant wildlife or heavy fishing activity, sometimes both. The patterns flip some expectations. Subtropical “garbage patches” do not always overlap with the highest animal biomass, so visible trash is not a reliable proxy for harm. “By mapping the global distribution of plastic related ecological risks, we provide a scientific foundation to guide ocean cleanup priorities and policymaking,” said Zhang. “This work comes at a crucial moment, as the world is negotiating a global plastic treaty, and we hope our results can help target interventions where they will have the greatest impact.” Plastics carry dangerous chemicals Some plastics act like tiny rafts for pollutants. The study highlights PFOS, a perfluoroalkyl substance, and methylmercury, a form of mercury that builds up in food webs. Both can be carried long distances when they stick to plastic. https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-risk-maps-reveal-dangerous-hotspots-for-ocean-animals/

BMW’s original Neue Klasse cars of the 1960s and 1970s created the brand we know and love today. Sure, BMW had made cars since the late 1920s, but it wasn’t until the 1500 sedan arrived in 1962, and the iconic 2002 in 1969, that BMW became BMW. So, when the Bavarian automaker revives such an important name, you know it’s a big deal. Today, the new Neue Klasse family makes its production debut at the Munich Motor Show in the form of the iX3, arguably BMW’s most important car in decades. The iX3 is the first of many cars to ride on the Neue Klasse EV platform. It’s a break from BMW’s current strategy of selling internal-combustion and electric cars on the same bones, as it does with the 4, 5, and 7 Series models. This iX3 will live alongside the current, gas-powered X3. BMW is promising big things. The iX3 50 xDrive will have a 400-mile range, with 463 horsepower and 473 pound-feet of torque from two electric motors. The promised base price is around $60,000. That makes the iX3 about $10,000 more than the current four-cylinder X3 and around $5,000 less than the six-cylinder X3 M50. But the EV has a lot more power, and of course, it’s far more efficient. The Neue Klasse cars are built on BMW’s first 800-volt architecture, which, among other things, enables incredible charging speeds. The iX3 can charge at up to 400 kilowatts, which translates to around 230 miles of range in 10 minutes on a DC fast charger capable of such power. That’s a ways off the Megawatt charging of some Chinese EVs, but it does make the iX3 one of the fastest-charging EVs on sale in America. Compared with the gas X3, the iX3 is slightly longer in wheelbase and overall length, but smaller in most other dimensions. The design is inspired by both the Neue Klasse and Neue Klasse X concept cars, and of course, the original sedans and coupes of the 1960s. The quad lights are a longtime BMW signature, and the tall, slim kidney grilles are like those on the original Neue Klasse cars. https://www.motor1.com/news/771238/2026-bmw-ix3-debut-horsepower-price-details/

FIA Formula 3: Hello and welcome back to Monza where it’s time for the press conference with the top three finishers in the morning’s FIA Formula 3 Sprint Race. In third place, we have Martinius Stenshorne for Hitech TGR. In second is Roman Bilinski for Rodin Motorsport and your race winner is Tim Tramnitz for MP Motorsport. Tim, congratulations, your second win of the season. It must be nice to guarantee that trophy to wrap up the year? Tim Tramnitz: Yeah, for sure, I think that's what we needed after some tough rounds where a few things went wrong and not quite our way. But overall, I think the pace was always there. I mean, of course, it makes it a lot easier if you are in the top 12 after quality. I think we had the opportunity today to win, and we took it. So very happy with that. FIA Formula 3: You made your way to the front about halfway through that race. Did you have to be tactical at all with the timing of some of the moves? Or was it just take the chance when it came? Tramnitz: It was a bit more difficult, because I thought at the beginning about tyre saving quite a lot, but it seemed like, because on the Soft tyre, we don't have so much experience. The characteristics of the tracks are very different. So this is pretty much the first time that it's a normal track so we don't have so much data on the Soft tyre. And in the end, it's always a bit of a surprise. And I realised at some point that I can push quite a lot, and then I started pushing. But for sure, the DRS games are always a bit tactical around here. FIA Formula 3: Well, you’ve got a win under your belt already this weekend and you still have an outside chance of P2 in the Championship. My maths makes it 10 points back from Mari Boya going into tomorrow’s race. Do you just go for it and is that the target? Tramnitz: It must be the target. I mean, if I want to have a chance to finish second, I have to go for it and I will tomorrow. So I think I was second for quite a long time. Like I said, the last races were a bit tough for us, and we had a lot of experiences which weren't nice. But on the other hand, we also learned a lot of things, and hopefully we can put it all together also tomorrow in the Feature Race. FIA Formula 3: Well, well done today and good luck for tomorrow as well. Roman, moving on to you now, P2 today and it looked like you had to really fight for it out there. Roman Bilinski: Yeah, exactly. I mean, P2 from P7 I think was a really good job. Of course, I'd like to get the win, but Tim did a fantastic job, so well done to him, but overall, pretty good points and that's what we need. FIA Formula 3: You mentioned from P7 getting up to P2, you clearly had the pace to get into the top three quickly as well today. How much were you enjoying the battles out there? Bilinski: Yeah, definitely. I think it was a really well fought race. I think harsh, but also fair at the same time. So it was good, and really enjoyed it and that's the main thing. FIA Formula 3: The race pace you've shown today must bode well for tomorrow's race as well, a little bit earlier with the race start for that one, but starting one position higher up, even if you have even higher targets now. Bilinski: Exactly. And like I said, I'll do the best I can, and we'll see what happens tomorrow. But for sure, we have to look over some things. I think I could have managed the tyres a bit better. Like Tim said, we haven't done so many races at tracks like this with the Soft tyre. So it was one of those where you go into it not really knowing. But overall, I think it was okay. FIA Formula 3: Well, congratulations, well done today on P2. Martinius, thanks very much for waiting, P3 for you today, but you obviously led early on as well. So just how tough was it for you out there today? Martinius Stenshorne: Yeah, we had a good start, starting second, I think we did a good lap one. Then Tim had a bit more pace, so he got us, and I was able to stay with him. But then, when I was fighting with Roman, I had to cut the track and I was told to let him by again, then we kind of lost him, and then it was a race for P2. FIA Formula 3: Just talk us through some of those fights with Roman and how tough it can be to defend round here. Stenshorne: Yeah, it's not easy, especially if you're the car in front without the DRS. It's quite powerful, so you have to manage well. But unfortunately, he did, and I couldn't get by. FIA Formula 3: Well, Hungary was a tough weekend for you before the break, results-wise. So how pleased you at least, to kick off this weekend with a podium? Stenshorne: Yeah, I think we had more potential in Hungary, but some things didn't really go our way. So it's nice to come back for the final round like this and finish the season with a podium and hopefully another one tomorrow. https://www.fiaformula3.com/Latest/1tCIieLAxzfBpC5F7vpvVX/round-10-post-sprint-race-press-conference

For days, farmers in the Indian state of Punjab watched the pounding monsoon rains fall and the rivers rise with mounting apprehension. By Wednesday, many woke to find their fears realised as the worst floods in more than three decades ravaged their farms and decimated their livelihoods. Hundreds of thousands of acres of bright green rice paddies – due to be harvested imminently – as well as crops of cotton and sugar cane were left destroyed as they became fully submerged in more than five feet of muddy brown flood waters. The bodies of drowned cattle littered the ground. “The crops are ruined, and even our homes are in danger of collapsing,” said Parmpreet Singh, 52, a farmer from Ajnala in Amritsar district, Punjab. His family, including his elderly mother and two young children, were now living on the roof of their house to stay safe from the murky flood waters.“My entire livelihood depends on my seven hectares of farmland, all of which has been destroyed by flood waters,” he said, despairing that his only option left would be to sell his land and abandon farming. “I had already invested most of my money into seeds and fertilisers for the previous crop. Now everything is gone.”While monsoon season usually brings heavy rain, the extreme levels of rainfall that fell across northern India this week caused untold damage in Punjab, resulting in flash floods and swollen rivers breaching their banks and overflowing into fields and villages. So far, 43 people have lost their lives and almost 2,000 villages in the state have been affected, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without electricity and access to clean water. The stench of rotting animal carcasses hangs over many villages.“This is the worst time Punjab has ever faced,” said Parminder Singh Pinki, a lawmaker from Firozpur district in western Punjab, one of the areas badly hit by floods. “I have never witnessed such devastation in my lifetime. Entire farmlands are submerged under water, now layered with mud and sand.” India’s farmers have already faced mounting hardship, with millions saddled with high debts, low incomes and heavy crop losses in the face of increasingly extreme and unpredictable weather conditions brought on by the climate crisis. Pinki was among those who accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) government, led by Narendra Modi, of negligence towards farmers and simply abandoning them to their fate during this year’s extreme monsoon. “The government had been aware for months about the weather forecasts and should have put proper measures and emergency responses in place,” he said. “But that never happened, and this failure has led to destruction on such a massive scale.” He was echoed by Surinder Singh, 75, a farmer from Sarala Kalan village in Patiala. For days, he had watched the canal near to their village getting higher and higher, but had been powerless to stop it. “The government will make promises of relief, but the farmers will end up receiving nothing,” he said. “In the end, we are left to take care of ourselves.” Like many, he questioned the long-term viability of Indian agriculture, which employs half the country’s workforce and keeps food on the country’s tables. “I cannot imagine what is left for our future generations,” he said. “Floods and extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, and the future does not look any better. If the farmers of Punjab – the food bowl of India – cannot even feed themselves, how will they feed others?” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/sep/06/everything-gone-punjabi-farmers-suffer-worst-floods-three-decades

was accused by authors in a lawsuit on Friday of illegally using their copyrighted books to help train its artificial intelligence systems, part of an expanding legal fight over protections for intellectual property in the AI era. The proposed class action, opens new tab, filed in the federal court in Northern California, said Apple copied protected works without consent and without credit or compensation.“Apple has not attempted to pay these authors for their contributions to this potentially lucrative venture,” according to the lawsuit, filed by authors Grady Hendrix and Jennifer Roberson. Apple and lawyers for the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday. The lawsuit is the latest in a wave of cases from authors, news outlets and others accusing major technology companies of violating legal protections for their works. Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic on Friday disclosed in a court filing in California that it agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle a class action from a group of authors who accused the company of using their books to train its AI chatbot Claude without permission.Anthropic did not admit any liability in the accord, which lawyers for the plaintiffs called the largest publicly reported copyright recovery in history. In June, Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab was hit with a lawsuit by a group of authors who claimed the company used their books without permission to train its Megatron artificial intelligence model. Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab and Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab-backed OpenAI also have faced claims over the alleged misuse of copyrighted material in AI training. The lawsuit against Apple accused the company of using a known body of pirated books to train its “OpenELM” large language models. Hendrix, who lives in New York, and Roberson in Arizona, said their works were part of the pirated dataset, according to the lawsuit. https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/boards-policy-regulation/apple-sued-by-authors-over-use-books-ai-training-2025-09-05/

After a long time, Intel has finally released another update for the Application Optimization feature. The new update includes over a dozen titles. Intel Officially Rolls Out APO Update For Intel Raptor Lake Refresh And Arrow Lake CPUs Intel's quarterly update for the APO (Application Optimization) is here, and as promised, Intel has just added several new titles to the database for better performance. The company today announced its latest update for the APO, adding 15 new titles that should now run better on Intel's latest processors, including the 14th-gen and Arrow Lake CPU families.Intel says that the feature is now being rolled out to the partners and will be available for the Raptor Lake Refresh and Core Ultra 200 series (both desktop and mobile), but some SKUs will be excluded from support. As far as Arrow Lake is concerned, all the "K" SKUs will be supported, as well as the Core Ultra 200HX family. For 14th-gen processors, Intel included the desktop "K" models, but only two mobile SKUs (Core i9 14900HX and Core i7 14700HX).Intel claims that with the latest update, users can gain as much as 14% performance uplifts in games like Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition, and several games will see a performance boost in single digits. As tested with the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, Intel shows a performance increase by 3-14% in various games, and even better 1% lows. If these numbers are true, then users should see smoother gameplay with APO enabled. Now, in order to enable Intel APO, users will have to install the Intel Dynamic Tuning Technology (DTT) from their motherboard's support page on the official vendor website. After installing DTT, APO will be enabled automatically, but by installing Intel APO UI from the Microsoft Store, users will be able to manage specific APO settings for individual games. Once you install the APO, you will get automatic updates whenever Intel adds more games to the APO library. https://wccftech.com/intel-releases-apo-update-for-core-ultra-200-and-14th-gen-processors-claims-up-to-14-higher-performance/

Web3’s first dedicated handheld consoles are launching over the next two months, officially starting crypto’s very own console war. However, with Microsoft, Nintendo, and others dominating the handheld market, is there any room for Web3’s contenders? With Sui’s SuiPlay0X1 dropping this month, and Play Solana’s PSG1 console rolling out in October 2025, a whole new era has begun for Web3 gaming. Unfortunately, this may be where the sector’s relationship with blockchain interoperability ends, as these consoles are specifically designed to interact with their own chains. And so begins the Web3 console wars. It’s an unusual battleground as, arguably, these Web3 consoles are targeting a very small niche group of early adopters and gamers. These consoles are entering a market long-dominated by titans such as Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, and now Steam. At present, there are small waves of Web3 games rolling out on consoles and platforms such as Steam, Epic Games Store, and the PlayStation 5. Arguably, this limits the need for dedicated Web3 consoles. That said, Web3 gaming titles launching on mainstream platforms face heavy restrictions, limiting their functionality.Solana’s PSG1 base console costs $329 and is a nifty handheld packed with 8GB RAM, 128 GB flash storage, a smooth 5-inch OLED display with 1280 x 1080 resolution, and a built-in Solana hardware wallet. Aesthetically, the console is a slick modern device draped in the nostalgia of an old-school Nintendo Game Boy.Reportedly, it may be able to easily emulate PlayStation 2, GameCube, PSP, and Dreamcast games, though this is unconfirmed. Players will also be able to interact with the myriad games and dApps built on Solana. Due to the blockchain-centric nature of its operating system, it will not be able to access modern games from Steam or Epic Games storefronts. This makes it a perfect fit for casual gamers with a nostalgic flair, especially ones who miss carrying around a dedicated gaming device in their pocket or bag. SuiPlay0X1 The SuiPlay0X1 will launch with a $649 price tag. It’s a wider handheld with plenty of heft. It boasts a powerful AMD Ryzen processor, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD storage (expandable), and a 7-inch IPS 1920 x 1200 display. Aesthetically, it looks like a cross between Sony’s PSP and Nintendo’s Wii U, but follows the modern trends adopted by the Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox’s upcoming handheld, the ROG Xbox Ally. It’s offering more of a dedicated gaming experience, which may appeal more to the ‘real’ gamers within the crypto crowd. Early footage has already shown the SuiPlay console playing major new releases such as Elden Ring, though how its performance stacks up against mainstream gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck remains to be seen. Of course, players will also have access to Sui’s growing Web3 gaming and dApp ecosystem. There’s a chance that the SuiPlay0X1 could beat out the Solana PSG1 in the long term as it allows users to access PC gaming titles via Steam and the Epic Games Store. https://www.ccn.com/news/crypto/web3-gaming-console-war-about-to-begin/

While Myst and its sequel Riven are omnipresent games thanks to developer Cyan Worlds constantly remaking them, games directly inspired by Myst are few and far between. The most notable example is Jonathan Blow's maze-obsessed puzzler The Witness, which distressingly will be a decade old come January. Now though, veteran publisher MicroProse has just released Neyyah. That may read like onomatopoeia for the noise Minecraft villagers make, but it is in fact a first-person 3D point 'n' click puzzler, one that doesn't so much wear its Myst inspirations on its sleeve as have them tattooed all over its body. Created over seven years by solo developer Adam Gwynaire, Neyyah transports players to not one but several remote islands dotted with strange plant life and mysterious structures. Like Myst, it's a first-person point and click adventure that involves reactivating arcane machinery by solving puzzles that interconnect in obscure ways. There's a trailer for the game below. The 3D environments certainly look the part, though I'm less sold on the FMV cutscenes used to tell the story, which have a (somewhat endearing, in all fairness) am-dram quality about them. According to a recent press release, the game's cast includes Gwynaire's "ex-wife and stepchildren" alongside several theatrical actors from the home city of Perth, Australia. The press releases mentions an intriguing detail regarding Neyyah's extensive soundtrack, which features more than 80 individual tracks composed for the game. Around a third of which was composed by Gwynaire. The other two-thirds, however, were created by Zaedyn Turner, who was apparently between 10 and 14 years old during the composition process. Frustratingly, there isn't an example of Turner's work online, though there is a track composed by Gwynaire available on YouTube. It certainly captures that wistful Myst vibe, ie something that would fit on that Pure Moods CD your mum had in the car in the mid-1990s. Neyyah is available now. While it only has a handful of Steam reviews so far, they currently sit at a 96% positive rating. "If you enjoyed Myst and Riven you are unlikely to find a closer love letter [to] those games than this," writes user SpudGunMcGee, though BoonMike, who enjoyed the game overall, says that Neyyah's exacting replication of Myst's structure "remind me of all the quality-of-life improvements those '90s games don't have." https://www.pcgamer.com/games/puzzle/this-australian-puzzler-that-took-seven-years-to-make-is-basically-myst-with-endearingly-naff-fmvs-and-music-composed-by-a-10-year-old/

Market bets for a rate cut at the Fed's meeting later this month were also supported by weaker-than-expected job openings data in the latest "JOLTS" report on Wednesday.
