The latest guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend using lower-sodium salt substitutes (LSSS) instead of regular table salt, considering its adverse impact on blood pressure and cardiovascular health. “Globally, each year 1.9 million deaths are attributable to high sodium intake. WHO recommends limiting sodium intake to below 2 g/day to reduce blood pressure and risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Despite efforts made by Member States to achieve the global target to reduce po[CENSORED]tion sodium intake by 30% by 2030, progress has been slow,” WHO noted on its site. It added that the mean global sodium intake remains high, estimated to be “4.3 g/day in 2019, more than double the WHO recommendation”. But what are LSSS? They are alternatives to regular salt such that they contain less sodium than regular salt and often include potassium chloride, with or without other agents, to achieve a flavour similar to regular salt, it read.“The replacement of some of the sodium chloride by potassium chloride may provide advantages, compared with regular salt, in addition to the sodium-lowering effect. The use of LSSS is increasingly considered by national health authorities and public health organisations as a potential sodium reduction strategy to lower blood pressure and CVD risk, and their use is on the rise,” it stated.Excessive sodium consumption is a well-established contributor to elevated blood pressure, which significantly increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, reiterated Dr Navneet Kaur, diabetologist, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Chirag Enclave, Delhi. “WHO recommends that adults consume less than two grams of sodium per day, equivalent to less than five grams of salt (just under a teaspoon). However, average sodium intake is estimated to be around 4.3 grams per day, more than double the recommended amount,” elucidated Dr Kaur. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/health/swap-table-salt-lower-sodium-substitutes-world-health-organization-experts-9807094/

China and Pakistan will upgrade and reconstruct the Pakistan’s railway network and further develop its Gwadar port, while Chinese companies can invest in the country’s offshore oil and gas developments, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday. The comments came as President Asif Ali Zardari visits China from February 4-8, where he will also attend the opening ceremony of the Asian Winter Games.Chinese investment and financial support for the country since 2013 have been a boon for its struggling economy. The two countries have had close ties underpinned by long-standing wariness of their common neighbour, India, and a desire to hedge against US influence across the region. Pakistan and China recognised the importance of Pakistan’s “Gwadar Port and agreed to fully unleash its potential as a key node for connectivity and trade,” Xinhua said quoting a joint statement from the two countries. Chinese-funded enterprises would be encouraged to “carry out mining investment cooperation in Pakistan” and cooperate in terrestrial and marine geological resources. “Pakistan welcomes Chinese companies to participate in the development of offshore oil and gas resources in Pakistan.” Longtime ally China has thousands of nationals working on projects grouped under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The $65-billion investment is part of President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative, designed to Beijing’s global reach by road, rail and sea. ‘Iron-clad friendship’ In a joint statement, the Foreign Office (FO) stated that the two countries reaffirmed “enduring partnership and iron-clad friendship between China and Pakistan”. The FO said, “The two sides reaffirmed their unyielding support for each other on issues concerning their respective core interests and major concerns.” Additionally, Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to the one-China policy, highlighting that it viewed Taiwan to be “an inalienable part” of China and “the Taiwan question is the core of China’s core interests”. “It firmly supports all efforts made by China to achieve national reunification and resolutely opposes all forms of ‘Taiwan independence’,” the FO said. According to the statement, the countries also “reiterated their commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations with a zero-tolerance attitude”. Additionally, it stated that Pakistan will continue its “efforts to investigate into the terrorist attacks involving Chinese personnel”. On October 6 2024, a massive explosion occurred on a road near Jinnah International Airport, killing a total of three people — including two Chinese engineers — and injuring at least 11 others. The attack was claimed by the banned outfit Baloch Liberation Army (BLA). Police registered an FIR against leaders of the BLA and others three days after the incident. Regarding the Belt and Road Initiative, the countries agreed to implement “the eight major steps” and jointly build a growth corridor, a livelihood-enhancing corridor, an innovation corridor, a green corridor and an open corridor aligned with Pakistan’s 5Es framework. The government launched its 13th Five-Year Plan (2024-2029) in December called “Uraan Pakistan: Homegrown National Economic Plan”, which aims to address key economic challenges through a targeted framework called the “Five Es” — Exports; E-Pakistan; Equity and Empowerment; Environment, Food and Water Security; and Energy and Infrastructure. The FO also confirmed that “efforts will be made to advance the upgradation of ML-1 in a phased and secure manner”. “The two sides reiterated that the Karakoram Highway (Raikot-Thakot) realignment project is of great importance to the land connectivity between China and Pakistan,” it stated. Furthermore, the two countries recognised the importance of the Gwadar Port’s role as a multimodel logistics hub to boost economic growth. “During the visit, the two sides signed more than a dozen documents covering cooperation on CPEC, trade, science and technology, people’s livelihoods, and media,” the statement read. https://www.dawn.com/news/1890144/china-pakistan-pledge-to-boost-cooperation-on-infrastructure-mining-projects

Japan's real wages fell 0.2 percent from a year earlier in 2024, marking the third consecutive year of decline, as pay hikes that grew at the fastest pace in 33 years failed to keep pace with rising prices, government data showed Wednesday. Nominal wages, or the average total monthly earnings per worker including base and overtime pay, increased 2.9 percent to 348,182 yen ($2,300) last year, expanding for the fourth straight year, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare said. But consumer prices outpaced wage growth with a 3.2 percent rise in the reporting year, although the pace decelerated from a 3.8 percent increase in 2023. By month, real wages at workplaces with five or more employees increased year-on-year only when bonuses were paid in June, July, November and December, despite the government's push to achieve wage growth exceeding inflation. Excluding bonuses and nonscheduled payments, average wages climbed 2.1 percent and special cash earnings, largely reflecting bonuses, expanded 6.9 percent, the ministry said in a preliminary report. Meanwhile, real wages at workplaces with 30 people or more inched up 0.1 percent in 2024, rising for the first time in two years, according to the ministry. In December, real wages, a barometer of consumer purchasing power, climbed 0.6 percent from the year before. Nominal wages increased 4.8 percent to 619,580 yen, up for the 36th straight month, with special cash earnings, including winter bonuses, expanding 6.8 percent from the previous year to 333,918 yen. https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2025/02/2acf8d9e9fa9-update1-japans-real-wages-fell-02-in-2024-down-for-3rd-straight-year.html

A Japanese man who spent $14,000 to turn himself into a dog, known across the world as ‘the human collie,’ has shared a significant life update. Toco the Collie has opened his own zoo where other humans can become animals too.Toco’s new specialised zoo, TokoTokoZoo, allows people to fulfill their wish to become a dog. The zoo aims to make people's "dreams come true." Toco, after achieving his goal of becoming a dog, wanted to offer the same opportunity to others. In Toco’s new zoo, customers can wear one of the hyper-realistic dog suits and live like him in doggy cosplay sessions, The Mirror reported. What does the zoo offer? The zoo's website revealed details about the venture, saying, "Have you ever wanted to be an animal? Have you ever imagined yourself as something other than yourself and felt excited? We offer a service that can help make that wish come true, even if only a little, by having you wear a costume." At present, however, Toco only offers an Alaskan Malamute costume. The large dog breed looks similar to a Husky. The website, which provides details about the costume's measurements and availability, urges customers to book their animal outfit 30 days in advance of the planned business hours. The experience is expensive, with customers required to pay 49,000 Yen ($319) for a 180-minute experience, and 36,000 Yen ($234) for 120 minutes. It will cost them an additional 30,000 Yen per person ($194) if they want to bring a friend along. It is cheaper if there are three people – 20,000 Yen ($129). The package offers interesting deals, including an overview of the costume, and a discussion of what the customer wants to do as the animal. They will then get to slip into the costume and have a custom fitting – before it is finally showtime. https://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/toco-the-human-collie-opens-a-zoo-where-other-people-can-become-animals-know-all-about-the-venture-101738739710553.html

You would think that with everything happening around this hectic world, rich people would begin to lose interest in buying expensive toys. Well, it's quite the opposite. Ferrari had record sales in 2024, and it already knows the next two years will also be solid. The order books cover the production run through 2026, so shopping for a new Prancing Horse today means waiting until early 2027 to take delivery. Maranello explains that demand is primarily driven by the 12Cilindri, Ferrari's replacement for the 812 Superfast. Launched last year, the V-12 supercar is available as a coupe and a convertible with an electrically folding hardtop. The Italian exotic marque, which FCA spun off into a separate unit in 2016 and is therefore not part of Stellantis, has six new models coming this year. The brand's first EV will be one of them, with the official debut on October 9.Ferrari isn't the exception in the high-end segment. Archrival Lamborghini is happy to report that its Revuelto flagship model is sold out until the end of 2026. The order intake for the Urus is also massive, with enough customer requests to keep the workers in Sant'Agata Bolognese busy throughout 2025. That's despite the fact the SUV is now strictly sold as a plug-in hybrid, which some might think would deter buyers.Like the Ferrari F80, McLaren's new W1 had already been sold out by the time it was officially unveiled. If Porsche decides to make a production version of the Mission X concept, we reckon it will be an instant success, although the electric powertrain could discourage some wealthy buyers. Rimac CEO Mate Rimac said last year that the one-percenters aren't keen on buying electric hypercars, which is why the Nevera still hasn't sold out yet. While buyers are reluctant to EVs, hybrids are taking over in the upper echelon. At Ferrari, 51% of the cars shipped to customers in 2024 were electrified. That doesn't necessarily come as a surprise since the 296 and SF90 are both plug-in hybrids. By 2030, the company projects hybrids and electric cars will account for 80% of total shipments, leaving just 20% for cars powered exclusively by combustion engines. Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna pins his hopes on synthetic fuel to keep ICE alive for the long haul. https://www.motor1.com/news/749639/ferrari-sold-out-through-2026/

Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep announced her retirement from tennis at age 33 after a first-round loss at a tournament in her home country of Romania on Tuesday, ending an injury-filled comeback from a doping suspension. "I don't know if it's with sadness or joy -- I think I'm feeling both -- but my soul is at peace with this decision, and I've always been realistic with myself. My body can no longer handle as much as it used to, to get me where I probably once was," Halep said, using a microphone to address the crowd in Cluj, Romania, following her 6-1, 6-1 loss to Lucia Bronzetti in the Transylvania Open. "It's very hard to reach that level, and I know what it takes to get there," Halep said. "That's why I wanted to be here today, in Cluj, to play in front of you and say goodbye on the tennis court, even if my performance wasn't great." It was the first match of the year for Halep, who reached No. 1 in the WTA rankings for the first time in 2017 but is now 870th and was given a wild-card invitation to play in Romania. She had pulled out of qualifying for the Australian Open and a tuneup tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, last month because of pain in her knee and shoulder, the latest interruption of her career. Halep once stood atop women's tennis, winning major singles trophies at Wimbledon in 2019 by beating Serena Williams in the final and at the French Open in 2018 by beating Sloane Stephens in the final. She also was a three-time runner-up at Grand Slam tournaments -- at the Australian Open in 2018 and the French Open in 2014 and 2017. But her last appearance at a major event came at the 2022 US Open. That was where Halep lost in the first round to Daria Snigur of Ukraine 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 and tested positive for the banned drug Roxadustat. Roxadustat was approved for use in the European Union in 2021 to treat the symptoms of anemia caused by chronic kidney failure. It stimulates the body to produce more of the natural hormone erythropoietin, or EPO, which has long been a doping product favored by cyclists and distance runners to boost stamina. Halep initially was given a four-year ban that would have expired in 2026. But she appealed, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced the penalty to nine months in March 2024. She argued that she was exposed to a contaminated supplement that caused her failed test. CAS determined that Halep bore "some level of fault or negligence" for not exercising "sufficient care" while using the supplement, but "she bore no significant fault or negligence." So that is why, CAS said, "her anti-doping rule violations were not intentional." Halep made her return to the tour later that month at the Miami Open but has played a total of only six matches since then. She leaves the sport with 24 singles titles and more than $40 million in prize money. "To be competitive again requires much more, and at this moment, it's no longer possible," Halep said Tuesday. "I don't want to cry -- this is something beautiful. I reached world No. 1, I won Grand Slams; it's everything I ever wanted." https://www.espn.in/tennis/story/_/id/43693114/two-slam-winner-simona-halep-announces-retirement-33

The idea of being swallowed whole by an animal has long fueled folklore, thrillers, and nightmares. From the biblical story of Jonah to modern survival accounts, it seems the concept is both terrifying and oddly fascinating. But what if these stories aren’t just tales spun to entertain? In the wild, some creatures truly have the anatomical capabilities to engulf humans whole or trap them temporarily within their cavernous mouths. Imagine diving into a tranquil ocean, only to find yourself face-to-face with the gaping maw of a whale shark. Or hiking in the jungle and crossing paths with a reticulated python, coiled and ready. While such scenarios are rare, they’re not entirely fiction. Over the years, encounters with creatures like massive pythons, crocodiles, and even whales have shown that nature can be stranger—and more terrifying—than we imagine.Animals that can swallow humans whole: Real-life incidents and details While extremely rare, certain animals have the size and anatomical adaptations to potentially swallow humans whole. Below are detailed insights into these species, along with real-life accounts where applicable.Anatomy and Capability: Reticulated pythons can grow over 20 feet long, making them the longest snakes in the world. Their flexible jaws and powerful constriction allow them to engulf prey significantly larger than their heads.Real-Life Incidents: In 2018, in Indonesia, a 54-year-old woman named Wa Tiba was swallowed whole by a 23-foot reticulated python. Villagers found the snake and her body inside its stomach. In 2017, another Indonesian man named Akbar was killed and swallowed by a python while working on his palm oil plantation. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/pets-animals/4-animals-that-can-swallow-humans-whole-9797530/

CAIRO, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia said it would not establish ties with Israel without the creation of a Palestinian state, contradicting President Donald Trump's claim that Riyadh was not demanding a Palestinian homeland when he said the U.S. wants to take over the Gaza Strip. In a shocking announcement, Trump said on Tuesday the United States would take over the war-ravaged enclave after Palestinians are resettled elsewhere and develop it economically. He was speaking at a joint press conference with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Saudi Arabia rejects any attempts to displace the Palestinians from their land, Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday, adding that its stance towards the Palestinians is not negotiable. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has affirmed the kingdom's position in 'a clear and explicit manner' that does not allow for any interpretation under any circumstances, the statement said.Any proposed displacement of Palestinians is a highly sensitive matter among both Palestinians and Arab countries. As fighting raged in the Gaza war, Palestinians feared they would suffer from another "Nakba", or catastrophe, the time when hundreds of thousands were dispossessed of their homes in the war at the birth of the state of Israel. When it comes to Saudi policy in the Middle East, the stakes are high for both Trump and Israel. The United States had led months of diplomacy to get Saudi Arabia, one of the most powerful and influential Arab states, to normalise ties with Israel and recognise the country. But the Gaza war, which began in October 2023, led Riyadh to shelve the matter in the face of Arab anger over Israel's offensive. Trump would like Saudi Arabia to follow in the footsteps of countries like the United Arab Emirates, a Middle East trade and business hub, and Bahrain which signed the so-called Abraham Accords in 2020 and normalised ties with Israel. In doing so, they became the first Arab states in a quarter century to break a longstanding taboo. Establishing ties with Saudi Arabia would be a grand prize for Israel because the kingdom has vast influence in the Middle East, the wider Muslim world, and it is the world's biggest oil exporter. https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/saudi-arabia-says-it-wont-establish-ties-with-israel-without-creation-2025-02-05/

Pakistan’s headline inflation clocked in at 2.4% on a year-on-year basis in January 2025, a reading below that of December 2024 when it stood at 4.1%, showed Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data on Monday. On a month-on-month basis, CPI increased by 0.2% in January 2025 as compared to 0.1% in the previous month and an increase of 1.8% in January 2024. This is the “lowest reading in 111 months,” said Topline Securities. Experts attributed the decline in inflation to a high base effect and lower food inflation. CPI inflation average during 7MFY25 stood at 6.5% as compared to 28.73% in 7MFY24. Inflation in Pakistan has been a significant and persistent economic challenge, particularly in recent years. In May 2023, the CPI inflation rate hit a record high of 38%. However, it has been on a downward trajectory since then. Days ago, the Finance Division said that policy interventions and administrative actions successfully controlled inflation, leading to a reduction in the prices of essential items. Last month, in line with expectations, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reduced the key policy rate by 100 basis points (bps), taking it down to 12%. This was the sixth successive cut in the key interest rate since June 2024 when it stood at 22%. After the policy rate decision, Governor SBP Jameel Ahmad told a presser that inflation would ease further in January before inching up in the subsequent months. Meanwhile, the latest CPI reading was even lower than the projections made by several brokerage houses. JS Global projected inflation reading to clock below 3% in January. “Ongoing sharp disinflation trend is expected to persist, with Jan-2025 CPI likely to fall to 2.8% (lowest since Nov-2015 owing to a high base affect), despite 0.6% MoM uptick,” the brokerage house said. A similar reading was given by Ismail Iqbal Securities Limited, another brokerage house. “Inflation for Jan’25 is projected at 2.9%, sharply down from 28.3% the same period last year, reflecting a significant easing in price pressures,” it said. Urban, rural inflation The PBS said CPI inflation urban decreased to 2.7% on year-on-year basis in January 2025 as compared to 4.4% in the previous month and 30.2% in January 2024. On month-on-month basis, it increased to 0.2% in January 2025 as compared to negative change of 0.1% in the previous month and an increase of 1.8% in January 2024. CPI inflation rural decreased to 1.9% on year-on-year basis in January 2025 as compared to 3.6% in the previous month and 25.7% in January 2024. On month-on-month basis, it increased by 0.2% in January 2025 as compared to 0.3% in the previous month and an increase of 1.9% in January 2024. https://www.brecorder.com/news/40346026/inflation-in-pakistan-clocks-in-at-24-in-january-2025

Benton Animal Services has seen an increased number of adoptions over the past month, thanks to an online campaign for short-term foster care. Volunteer Susan Taylor kicked off the initiative, recruiting local businesses and leaders to spread the word about how many dogs were in danger of being hurt during the recent cold snap. “I was worried about the winter weather and felt like the shelter staff would appreciate some help in keeping their dogs safe and warm. The facility's ground holds moisture, and I knew the outdoor kennel dogs needed to have a dry space,” Taylor said. “As the temperatures continued to drop, I became more worried and decided I could do more than blankets and beds and covering the kennels with canvas. I asked Mallori Howard, Animal Services Manager], if short-term fosters were an option, she said yes, and the rest is animal rescue history.” The call went out on Jan. 4. By Jan. 8, 28 out of 62 dogs had been placed in foster care. Howard said the effects have been long-lasting. “The short-term fostering was very successful. First, it helped dogs get out of the shelter's outdoor kennels during the extreme cold temperatures we had and secondly, it helped us learn more about the animals. Foster families were able to tell us if the animal was house-trained and how it acted in a home environment,” Howard said. “It is often hard to learn a dog's true personality in the shelter setting. It was also so successful because the foster families reached out to their families, friends, and social media to help promote the dog for adoption. We also had several foster fails, where the foster family adopted the dog themselves. The short term fostering has been great so we can learn more about the pet, the pet can be in a home, and the pet still spends some time at the shelter and adoption events to meet potential adopters.” Of the 28 dogs placed in short-term foster care, 17 found permanent homes. Howard said that animal services staff have been inspired by the process. “I hope to continue to launch dogs out for short-term fosters in the future where people can foster a dog for 30 days or less, and either return the dog to the shelter if it is not adopted and switch out so our longer-term dogs will have time outside the shelter and we can launch them for adoption in new ways,” she said. With the threat of extreme weather now passed, the amount of volunteer fosters has decreased. However, Howard said that the online campaign has sparked interest in volunteering in other ways, such as walking the dogs. “We stay full and have limited staff. Doggy day out and fostering are great, but we also encourage people to come out and help us walk and interact with the dogs,” she said. “Even if it is just 30 minutes, that might be the only time that dog is outside the kennel that day.” Howard said another way residents can help the shelter is by ensuring pets stay with their owners. She said the staff do everything they can to keep dogs where they belong, even if they have run away from home. “We bring in animals almost every day. One way the city can help is to microchip your animal. The shelter offers free microchipping for those in the city of Benton. To schedule an appointment, residents need to contact the shelter at 501-776-5972,” Howard said. “Second, we encourage people to reclaim their pet. We understand it can be pricey, but there are ways we can assist with the payment, so we encourage pet owners not to be deterred from reclaiming pets because of reclaim fees.” https://www.bentoncourier.com/news/benton-animal-services-has-increase-of-adoptions-with-online-campaign/article_f43e8d7c-df56-11ef-8418-0fe71b6cffc1.html

Automakers discontinue vehicles all the time, be it due to slow sales, old age, or plans to replace them with entirely new models. For 2025, more than 30 cars met their maker. Even though we’re less than two months into the new year, nearly 20 cars are on the chopping block for 2026. This year’s list includes some beloved models, like the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman, which will make way for their electric replacements. One of America’s cheapest cars, the Nissan Versa, likely won’t stick around for 2026. Luxury brands like BMW and Infiniti, meanwhile, have major plans to revamp their lineups—which means many of their vehicles won’t live to see the new year. As always, more cars will be added to this list as the year goes on. For now, take a look at some of the cars that we’ll have to say goodbye to for 2026.Technically speaking, the Audi A4 name isn’t dead. As the brand streamlines its range as part of ongoing electrification efforts, the gas A5 will replace the gas A4, while Audi plans to revive the A4 name—in some form or another—with an electric powertrain in the near future. With that said, the current model will exit the lineup after the 2025 model year, leaving behind a sporty compact luxury sedan with a $45,395 starting price and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The BMW X4 was a pretty hot commodity when it debuted back in 2014. But in the decade since, buyers seemingly fell out of love with the funky luxury SUV. BMW will reportedly kill the X4 after the 2025 model year. Don’t worry, BMW still has the new X2 crossover coupe to fill its awkward shoes. https://www.motor1.com/features/749149/dead-cars-2026/

Aston Villa have signed Spain midfielder Marco Asensio on loan from Paris St-Germain until the end of the season. The three-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid is Villa's fourth signing of the winter transfer window after Marcus Rashford, Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia. Villa will reportedly cover the 29-year-old's wages but do not have an option to make the move permanent. Asensio has scored seven goals in 47 appearances for PSG since joining from Real Madrid in the summer of 2023. He helped the club win the French title last season, but this term he has made just eight league starts. He was also part of the Spain squad that won the Nations League in 2023. Villa boss Unai Emery said his side needed new players following Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Wolves, which left the club eighth in the Premier League. They sold Colombia striker Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in a £71m deal and centre-back Diego Carlos to Fenerbahce for around £8.45m. Earlier on Monday they loaned 21-year-old winger Samuel Iling-Junior to Middlesbrough for the rest of the season. Villa completed the loan signing of Manchester United forward Rashford, 27 - which includes an option to buy for £40m - on Sunday. Netherlands forward Malen, 26, joined Villa for £19m from Borussia Dortmund three weeks ago, while Spanish full-back Garcia, 21, joined from Levante for a reported fee of £6m with a further £1m in add-ons. Asensio could make his Villa debut alongside Rashford against Tottenham in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday (17:35 GMT) - a match that is live on BBC One and iPlayer. Villa are also in the last 16 of the Champions League. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cj918vvmz0go

The COVID-19 pandemic illuminated a vast landscape of misinformation about many topics, science and health chief among them. Since then, information overload continues unabated, and many people are rightfully confused by an onslaught of conflicting health information. Even expert advice is often contradictory. On top of that, people sometimes deliberately distort research findings to promote a certain agenda. For example, trisodium phosphate is a common food additive in cakes and cookies that is used to improve texture and prevent spoilage, but wellness influencers exploit the fact that a similarly named substance is used in paint and cleaning products to suggest it’s dangerous to your health. Such claims can proliferate quickly, creating widespread misconceptions and undermining trust in legitimate scientific research and medical advice. Social media’s rise as a news and information source further fuels the spread of pseudoscientific views.Misinformation is rampant in the realm of health and nutrition. Findings from nutrition research is rarely clear-cut because diet is just one of many behaviors and lifestyle factors affecting health, but the simplicity of using food and supplements as a cure-all is especially seductive. I am an assistant professor specialising in medical education and science communication. I also train scientists and future health care professionals how to communicate their science to the general public. In my view, countering the voices of social media influencers and health activists promoting pseudoscientific health claims requires leaning into the science of disease prevention. Extensive research has produced a body of evidence-based practices and public health measures that have consistently been shown to improve the health of millions of people around the world. Evaluating po[CENSORED]r health claims against the yardstick of this work can help distinguish which ones are based on sound science. That’s because a food or beverage is rarely just good or bad. Instead, its health effects can depend on everything from the quantity a person consumes to their genetic makeup. Hundreds of scientific studies describe coffee’s health benefits and, on the flip side, its health risks. A bird’s-eye view can point in one direction or another, but news articles and social media posts often make claims based on a single study. Things can get even more confusing with dietary supplements because people who promote them often make big claims about their health benefits. Take apple cider vinegar, for example – or ACV, if you’re in the know. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/health/nutrition-advice-misinformation-medical-education-specialist-valid-health-information-from-pseudoscience-9814315/

In a key development, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum and US President Donald Trump have agreed to temporarily halt the sweeping US tariffs on Mexico’s exports, delaying their implementation for one month. The announcement came just hours before the tariffs were due to take effect, with both leaders confirming the agreement on social media platforms. Sheinbaum, the first to reveal the decision, praised the "good conversation" with Trump, emphasizing mutual respect for both nations' sovereignty. As part of the agreement, Mexico will deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to its northern border to combat drug trafficking into the United States. In return, Sheinbaum highlighted that the US would work on reducing the trafficking of high-powered firearms into Mexico, which has fueled organized crime in the country. Trump, in his post on Truth Social, characterized the conversation with Sheinbaum as "very friendly" and reiterated that the Mexican troops would focus on curbing the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants into the US He did not mention any actions to prevent firearms trafficking to Mexico. This deal temporarily diffuses one aspect of the escalating global trade tensions stirred by Trump's re-election bid, in which he campaigned on raising tariffs for international goods entering the US His plan included 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, arguing the tariffs were necessary to tackle undocumented migration and drug smuggling across Us borders. Tariff Delays and Ongoing trade tensions While this pause in tariffs addresses one front of the brewing trade war, it does not resolve the looming threat of 25% tariffs on Canada, which remains in effect. Trump also signaled ongoing discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, with China also facing 10% tariff increases. Canada has been particularly vocal in its response, with Prime Minister Trudeau warning of retaliatory tariffs on $105bn worth of US imports. He cited the potential harm to both Canadian and American workers, especially targeting key products such as Florida oranges, Kentucky bourbon, and Pennsylvania-made motorcycles. The intertwined economies of Mexico, Canada, and the US are highly vulnerable to the effects of a full-scale trade war, especially in industries like automotive and agriculture. Experts have warned that US consumers could bear the brunt of higher prices resulting from these tariffs. Despite the risks, Trump has framed the tariffs as a necessary measure to "Make America Great Again", acknowledging the potential for domestic blowback. https://tribune.com.pk/story/2526338/mexico-to-deploy-10000-troops-to-us-border-in-exchange-for-one-month-tariff-delay
