The combined economic effects of technology outages aren’t limited to a single department or cost category; with direct hits to revenue, lost productivity and regulatory fines hitting companies at every level. A new report suggests downtime costs the world’s largest 2,000 companies as much as $400 billion annually. Also be described as ‘failure’ or ‘standstill time’, ‘downtime’ refers to the period during which a system or computer system is unavailable or inoperable and thus cannot be used. With modern business increasingly hinging on digital systems to deliver their work, downtime is more of a crisis for companies than ever before. According to a global report from Oxford Economics and Splunk titled ‘The Hidden Costs of Downtime’, every year downtime costs the world’s largest companies a colossal $400 billion. The most substantial portion of that comes from lost revenue – with the Global 2,000 (annual ranking of the top 2,000 public companies in the world, published by Forbes magazine) forfeiting an average $49 million on that front. But other costs quickly add up too – including a $22 million average bill from regulatory fines, $16 million in SLA penalties, and $15 million in settling legal costs. No industry was left unharmed by this blight. However, the businesses most impacted by downtime were possibly not the ones people would assume when thinking of the impact of computer difficulties. While the sector is more visually dependent on computer systems, communications and media operators were found to be least impacted by outages – with an average cost of $143 million per year to those firms. The largest losses for these operators came in the forms of lost revenue and contractual or legal disputes which emerged from the downtime. Similarly, information and technology firms – which depend almost entirely on the health of their systems – saw below-average costs of $180 million per year from downtime. In this case, legal disputes were the leading cause of losses. Meanwhile, despite the possible reputational harm you might think a technology firm’s own systems shutting down might cause, comparatively little impact came from the need to perform damage control in the sector. In comparison, several less overtly tech-centric industries saw outages cause much greater damage. Operators in the public sector, for example, took a greater hit of $193 million – the majority of which included $73 million in damage control to improve investor relations and retain public trust in their services. But by far the worst hit by downtime were firms in retail. There, a sector increasingly dependent on online orders for income saw an average $76 million loss in revenue and a $91 million bill relating to legal disputes push the loss most operators in the sector encounter to $287 million. https://www.consultancy.uk/news/37540/online-downtime-costs-companies-400-billion-per-year

ISLAMABAD: Ashraf Khan picked up a colorful anklet and showed it to a customer from a range of collars, beads, bells and other ornaments at his stall of animal accessories at the Sangjani cattle market on the outskirts of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. The 33-year-old, who sets up a makeshift stall at the market every year, said the demand for animal accessories went up just as the demand for animals and their prices surged ahead of the major Islamic festival, marked by devout Muslims by slaughtering animals and sharing the meat with family and the poor. Khan, who has been selling animal accessories for the last several years, said his clients not only included members of the public, but also traders who wanted to adorn their cows, sheep and bulls before putting them up for sale in order to better attract customers and fetch higher prices. “We receive goats, lambs and bulls [at our decoration stall],” Ashraf said. “It takes Rs1,000 to Rs1,500 ($3-5) to decorate a goat with different types of materials. Decorating bulls ranges from Rs2,000 to Rs2,500 ($7-8).” The 33-year-old sources ornaments from Islamabad’s twin city of Rawalpindi and sets up his stall in the Sangjani capital market a week before Eid. “The price tag depends on the number and quality of items,” Khan said. Naik Muhammad, who brought 50 lambs to sell at Sangjani market, said a lamb cost him around Rs25,000 ($90) this year and he was looking to sell it for between Rs85,000 to Rs95,000 ($305-$341). “The purpose of decoration is that customers like them more and the rates get better,” Muhammad said. “When customers like the animal then we can ask rates of our choice.” Alamgir Khan, a fruit vendor in Islamabad, purchased a lamb for Rs77,500 ($278) after haggling with sellers for around three hours and brought it to Khan’s stall to buy accessories for decoration. “We have spent some money on its decoration to make it look beautiful and then the children at home will see it and be happy, and that is a rewarding thing,” Alamgir told Arab News. “This is an animal for sacrifice, it should be adorned.” https://www.arabnews.pk/node/2532026/pakistan

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is a dream on curvy country back roads. Everyone knows it’s great on a track. But did you know it inhales long stretches of the Ohio Turnpike like a tiny, Japanese black hole? Floor it on the entrance ramp, smile as you wring out the 181-horsepower four-pot, then exit said highway. Time doesn’t matter. Road conditions don’t matter. When it comes to road-tripping an ND3, five hours feels like five minutes. I swear Mazda hid a Flux Capacitor somewhere in this thing. I conquered all of the above and more on a recent 800-mile trip to the suburbs of Akron, Ohio, piloting a new MX-5 RF Club with a six-speed stick and the Brembo/BBS Recaro package. 2024 marks the first year for the updated ND3 model, which Motor1’s self-proclaimed Hardtop Sports Car Man Chris Rosales recently exercised to considerable praise. But my aging (and not so outstanding) backside was hoping I’d survive 800 miles in the stiff little Miata. So yeah, my review is a little different.Full disclosure—this trip marked my first ND experience and only my second time in an MX-5, the first came many moons ago in a mostly stock second-gen NB. I have no illusions that the hard roof and Recaros helped make this road trip an unexpected pleasure. But before I go further, some exposition. My destination was classified, the endpoint of a mission to check out another legendary Japanese vehicle, one with three times as many cylinders that you'll hear about later this year. Unfortunately, I only had two days to make the trip happen. Leaving my northern Michigan home on a Wednesday, I had to trek 400 miles southeast, spend a few hours getting photos and interviews, then have the Miata back in Detroit by 1:30 PM the next day. The Mazda is supremely small. Big shocker, I know, but consider these specs. The wheelbase is 90.9 inches, which is shorter than a two-door Jeep Wrangler. You're barely five inches off the road, about the same as a Lotus Elise. At 49.0 inches tall, the roof reaches just halfway up the side of most pickups and SUVs. https://www.motor1.com/reviews/722936/2024-mazda-miata-rf-review/

T20 World Cup, St Lucia West Indies 218-5 (20 overs): Pooran 98 (53), Charles 43 (27); Gulbadin 2-14 Afghanistan 114 (16.2 overs): Ibrahim 38 (28); McCoy 3-14 West Indies won by 104 runs Scorecard. Tables Nicholas Pooran hit a stunning 98 as West Indies prepared for a Super 8s match against England at the T20 World Cup with a 104-run victory over Afghanistan. With both sides already through to the next stage, co-hosts West Indies dispatched a much-fancied Afghanistan side with a statement win in St Lucia. Pooran's eight sixes helped the co-hosts rack up 218-5 - the highest score of the tournament so far. They were 85-1 after five overs with 36 runs coming from the fourth, including three Pooran sixes, a no-ball and five wides - equalling the record for the most expensive over in men's T20s. Having taken down Afghan superstar Rashid Khan, left-hander Pooran was run out in the final over desperately trying to keep the strike in search of three figures. But West Indies dominance continued into Afghanistan's chase when Akeal Hosein had Rahmanullah Gurbaz caught for a three-ball duck in a wicket maiden to start. From there the hosts found breakthroughs regularly and Afghanistan were bowled out for 114 in 16.2 overs. Obed McCoy took three wickets and spinners Akeal and Gudakesh Motie two apiece. The victory concludes the initial group stage of this compelling World Cup, which now moves on to its second phase with eight teams battling across two groups to secure a semi-final place. West Indies and England meet on Wednesday (Thursday 01:30 BST) at this ground. West Indies make a statement England, beware. This was West Indies showing why they are fancied by many as winners of this tournament. Roared on by a raucous home crowd, they set a new record for the highest powerplay score at a T20 World Cup and continued on to their highest total in the history of the tournament. West Indies' early boundaries were streaky – no more so than Pooran's first boundary, which flew over the rope at third man off the leading edge. Fazalhaq Farooqi, the tournament's leading wicket-taker, was thrashed for 28 in his first two overs but that was economical in comparison to the pummelling taking by Azmatullah Omarzai in the fourth over. After Pooran's edgy six, he followed with a no-ball that was pulled for four by Pooran before the subsequent free hit flew for wides over the wicketkeeper's head. Still the pain was not done - four leg-byes and two sixes followed. Afghanistan managed to drag the scoring back thereafter as Pooran put on 80 with Johnson Charles, who made 43, and 64 with Rovman Powell. The left-hander went back up the gears to finish, however, by taking 24 runs from the 18th over bowled by Rashid, including three leg-side sixes. There were three balls to go when he was scampering back for two to give himself a chance of a first T20 hundred for West Indies but was run out from a direct hit from the deep despite a dive. West Indies' all-round effort with the ball was as impressively as Pooran's highlight reel of classy hitting. They have effective spinners, pace and experience and also caught everything in the field. They go into the game against England having won eight T20s in a row. 'I felt like it was my day' - reaction West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran: "I assessed the conditions early. It was really important for us to not lose wickets in the middle. I felt today was my day and I had to take the responsibility. "We have been really consistent as a team. The way we have played is wonderful." Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan: "The way they started with the bat, it was pretty hard to come back from that. To restrict them to 220 was a good effort. "It is good it happened in this part of the tournament. We will learn from it." https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/articles/cxwwdzezmrvo

Mr Stoltenberg announced that in 2024, defence spending across European Allies and Canada is up 18 percent, “the biggest increase in decades.” He further confirmed that 23 Allies will meet the target of spending at least two percent of GDP on defence. Over the past four years, the number of Allies hitting that target more than doubled. Mr Stoltenberg thanked President Biden for his leadership and strong commitment to NATO. He highlighted that NATO is making America stronger by advancing US interests. In response to the changing security landscape, Allies have put forth the most comprehensive defence plans since the Cold War, featuring more forces, capabilities, and investment. On Ukraine, the Secretary General stressed the need to continue to provide long-term support, arguing that the stronger support is for Ukraine, the sooner Russia’s war will end. He welcomed the 10-year bilateral security agreement between the US and Ukraine and said that at the Washington Summit, leaders are expected to agree a greater NATO role in coordinating security assistance and training for Ukraine, as well as a long-term financial pledge. Earlier, Mr Stoltenberg delivered a speech at the Wilson Center. He emphasised that keeping Europe safe and NATO strong is in the vital national interest of the United States. “This was true 75 years ago. It is true today and will continue to be the case in the future,” he said. Talking about deterrence and defence, the Secretary General said that European Allies are “doing far more for their collective security.” They are investing a lot more in defence and spending a lot of this money in the US. He pointed out that since 2022, “over two-thirds of European defence acquisitions were made with US firms.” He added: “NATO is good for US security, good for the US industry, and good for US jobs.” The Secretary General is on a week-long visit to North America. On Tuesday, he will meet with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and engage with Senators. On Wednesday, Mr Stoltenberg will travel to Ottawa to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He will return to Washington D.C. on Thursday to meet with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Members of the U.S. Congress. https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/news_226749.htm

Federal Reserve officials said Wednesday that inflation has fallen further toward their target level in recent months but signaled that they expect to cut their benchmark interest rate just once this year. The policymakers' forecast for one rate cut was down from a previous forecast of three, because inflation, despite having cooled in the past two months, remains persistently elevated. In a statement issued after its two-day meeting, the Fed said the economy is growing at a solid pace, while hiring has “remained strong.” The officials also noted that in recent months there has been “modest" further progress toward their 2 percent inflation target. That is a more positive assessment than after the Fed's previous meeting May 1, when the officials had noted a lack of progress. Still, the central bank made clear Wednesday that further improvement is needed. “We’ll need to see more good data to bolster our confidence that inflation is moving sustainably toward 2 percent,” Chair Jerome Powell said at a news conference after the Fed meeting ended. The policymakers, as expected, kept their key rate unchanged at roughly 5.3 percent. The benchmark rate has remained at that level since July of last year, after the Fed raised it 11 times to try to slow borrowing and spending and cool inflation. Fed rate cuts would, over time, lighten loan costs for consumers, who have faced punishingly high rates for mortgages, auto loans, credit cards and other forms of borrowing. The officials' rate-cut forecast reflects the individual estimates of 19 policymakers. The Fed said eight of the officials projected two rate cuts. Seven projected one cut. Four of the policymakers envisioned no cuts at all this year. “What everyone agrees on,” Powell said at his news conference, is that the Fed's timetable for rate cuts is "going to be data-dependent.”The Fed’s latest projections are by no means fixed in time. The policymakers frequently revise their plans for rate cuts — or hikes — depending on how economic growth and inflation evolve over time. On Wednesday morning, the government reported that inflation eased in May for a second straight month, a hopeful sign that an acceleration of prices that occurred early this year may have passed. Consumer prices excluding volatile food and energy costs — the closely watched “core” index — rose just 0.2 percent from April, the smallest rise since October. Measured from a year earlier, core prices climbed 3.4 percent, the mildest pace in three years. “We welcome today’s reading and hope for more like that," Powell said. Stock prices jumped and bond yields fell Wednesday morning after the government reported the milder-than-expected inflation data — and didn't budge much even after the Fed's policymakers projected fewer rate cuts for 2024 than the market had expected. Though inflation has tumbled from a peak of 9.1 percent two years ago, it remains too high for the Fed's liking. The policymakers now face the delicate task of keeping rates high enough to slow spending and defeat high inflation without derailing the economy. https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/world/2024/06/501_376512.html

King Charles has reportedly chosen to shrug off animal cruelty as there will be no action taken against yesterday’s attack on his first official portrait. According to GB News, he is said to be focusing solely on preparing for Trooping the Colour this week. Speaking to the channel on Wednesday, royal correspondent Cameron Walker confirmed the same thing about Your Majesty’s attention. He said, “Buckingham Palace has stated they will not comment on the matter, likely to prevent giving the group more publicity and encouraging further vandalism.” “I believe King Charles’ mind will be firmly on both Trooping the Colour on Saturday and the Order of the Garter on Monday,” the royal commentator added. On the other hand, Animal Rising had tried their best to grab Your Majesty’s thoughts when its group members used Wallace and Gromit to cover his portrait on June 11. The cartoon is rumored to be one of the Monarch’s favorite things to watch, and so there could be no better way for making him listen. King Charles is a key member of the RSPCA, which is funding animal cruelty on farms. Animal Rising has demanded that he takes a step to stop the organization from committing such crimes. But as per Cameron Walker, Your Majesty has chosen to side-eye this case. https://jang.com.pk/en/13907-king-charles-ignores-animal-cruelty-by-not-addressing-portrait-vandalism-news

We’re in a golden era for hybrid cars. They’re the perfect step into our fully electric future because they work seamlessly with American infrastructure, making hybrids both efficient and convenient. The 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid makes the hybrid formula its own, producing a sleek, smooth-driving sedan that gets 49 miles per gallon combined and laughs in the face of inflation. It’s the perfect car for our time. The 2025 Civic is a refresh of the current-generation model, and it's available in both sedan and hatchback forms. The four sedan trims are priced as such (including the $1,095 destination fee): LX ($25,345); Sport ($27,345); Sport Hybrid ($29,845); and Sport Hybrid Touring ($32,845).The bottom two trims have a 150-horsepower gas motor, while the top two hybrids make 200 hp and 232 pound-feet of torque. The sedans go on sale in June 2024, and Honda says power figures are preliminary estimates. The top-trim Civics have a 2.0-liter, inline-four-cylinder engine paired with a two-motor hybrid, and the battery charges while the car drives—meaning the Civic doesn’t have as much electric power as a plug-in hybrid, but it also doesn't have to be plugged in. Honda says the hybrid will make 49 mpg combined, and that it’s also "the most powerful non-Type R Civic ever." The convenience of hybrids is their key strength. People who drive or own electric cars usually get past range anxiety—the fear of running out of juice because there's not a charger on every corner—quickly. But with hybrids, buyers can reap some of an EV's economy rewards without a hint of range anxiety. https://www.motor1.com/reviews/722965/2025-honda-civic-hybrid-first-drive-review/

LONG ISLAND (NY): Naseem Shah has termed the close loss against India as an unforgettable experience, saying that tears coming out of their eyes following the match were owing to missing a really good opportunity to win that particular match. During mixed-zone media interaction, Naseem said that those tears and agony were obvious. “Yes, tears came out of my eyes just because we were offered a cake walk which we could not accept. We should have won the match against India as the target was not all that challenging. Yet we failed. I was so upset at losing the opportunity that I could not control my emotions,” Naseem said. The fast bowler also showed concerns over the overall standing of the team. “We have lost two matches. We should have won the both. We came so close to winning matches against the US and India and yet we came out losers. It is very upsetting indeed.” When questioned as to whether he could have won those matches with the bat, he said he was no one to decide on the batting lineup. “It is for the team management to decide when to send a batsman and to what batting number of bowlers should be.” On Pakistan’s chances in the World Cup, he said it now all depends on the luck. “We have to admit that nothing is in our hands right now. Everything now rests with the fate. If we are lucky enough, the lady luck would support us and the results from here on would come through to our liking. Let us see how things would unfold from here on.” https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/1199839-naseem-rues-missing-golden-opportunity-against-india

Unless you are on a social media detox, we are pretty sure you have seen at least one video proclaiming a concoction to be the “ultimate fat-burning drink“. While the idea of such a wonder drink is appealing, do they work? We decided to find out the same after coming across a weight loss drink (a mix of turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper, and ginger) shared by fitness trainer Nitesh Soni. Let’s understand the ingredients: “The curcumin present in turmeric may help regulate metabolism, while the cinnamon can help keep blood sugar stable. Further, the piperine found in black pepper can help curcumin absorb better, and ginger’s thermogenic characteristics may modestly increase metabolism,” said Kanikka Malhotra, consultant dietician and diabetes educator. However, it is critical to not oversimplify weight loss. “There is no single ‘fat-burning drink’ that can help shed pounds on its own. A nutritious diet, frequent exercise, and plenty of sleep are all necessary for long-term weight loss,” said Malhotra.Hydration: This drink promotes water consumption, which is essential for weight management. Antioxidant powerhouse: The contents are high in antioxidants, which can improve general health. Metabolism boost: Ginger and certain components of turmeric may provide a small metabolic boost.Oversimplification: This drink is unlikely to be a magic bullet for weight loss. Individual needs: Everyone’s body reacts differently. What works for one person may not work for another. Underlying medical conditions: Certain components may interact with drugs or exacerbate health issues. For example, turmeric can thin the blood, while ginger might irritate the stomach in certain people. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/food-wine/spice-mix-cinnamon-ginger-turmeric-pepper-weight-loss-expert-weigh-benefits-nitesh-soni-9365028/

(IMF) dominated the political discourse on Wednesday as the new Shehbaz Sharif-led govt presented its first federal budget, worth a projected 18.5 trillion rupees, in the National Assembly. Last month, IMF linked any future deal with Islamabad to the passage of the 2024-25 budget in parliament.Pakistan has been in talks with the IMF for a loan estimated to range from $6 billion to $8 billion as it seeks to avert a default in the face of its economy growing the slowest among all countries of the region. Islamabad entered into a $6.5 billion three-year agreement with IMF in 2019. It received a final $3 billion under a standby arrangement last year, just before the agreement was to expire. The finance ministry and IMF were reportedly locked in last-minute talks as the global lender presented some more tough conditions last week to include in the budget. A ministry official said the IMF's key demands include a higher tax revenue target, withdrawal of subsidies, taxes on the agriculture sector, increased taxes and levies on the power, gas, and oil sectors, privatisation of sick govt organisations and units, and improved administration. Despite Pakistan's aggressive pursuit of economic diplomacy to improve trade and investment ties with other nations, finance minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, who presented the budget in parliament, explicitly said there were no alternatives to IMF under the current circumstances. "As you all know, I have been in this role for about three to three and a half months," he said at a presser. "But even when I was in the private sector, I was very loud and clear that we should go into the IMF programme because there is no plan B. If there were a plan B, the IMF would not be called the lender of last resort. There's a reason for that." Even with depleted foreign reserves and an economic crisis, the govt allocated 2,100 billion rupees to defence in the federal budget, a 19% increase over the previous year. IMF hasn't demanded cuts in defence spending so far. A day earlier, the govt unveiled the Pakistan Economic Survey 2023-24, which showed that the economy failed to meet most of its targets set in the previous budget. The finance minister also addressed IMF's insistence on ending tax exemptions for a fresh loan. "There are no sacred cows. Everyone has to contribute to this economy. The country can only be run with taxes. This is a basic principle," he said. https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/pakistan/imf-bailout-terms-hang-heavy-over-new-shehbaz-govts-first-federal-budget/articleshow/110948326.cms

We aren't getting a BRZ STI, stop asking. Subaru instead will happily sell you a BRZ with some STI trimmings, like bigger brakes, a better suspension, and upgraded visual cues. The BRZ tS—or, Tuned by STI—isn't the hardcore model we've been begging for for more than 10 years now, but it still does the job well enough. Under the hood is the same 2.4-liter naturally aspirated boxer engine found in every BRZ, sending 224 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. No automatic here.Does the tS deserve more power? Of course. Even a titch of extra low-end torque would make the BRZ feel less lethargic at low rpms. Slap a turbo on there, Subaru. But the boxer engine is still a riot to rip up to its 7,000 rpm peak before slamming into second, and it's decently speedy once you get it going. It just takes a minute. But straight-line speed comes second to superb handling. For any of you maniacs who thought the standard BRZ was too soft, the tS has stiffer Hitachi dampers for added composure. The front dampers are variable to help keep the front of the car softer (marginally), while the fixed dampers in the rear ride roughshod over bumps and undulations. It's all part of the charm. The tS is magical in corners. The ride is stiff, sure, but it keeps body roll to a faint whisper and gives the car unparalleled predictability. The chassis is balanced, and the extra grip from the standard Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer tires is more than you'll know what to do with. The steering is top tier too, matched only by the Mazda Miata at this price in overall response, feel, and feedback. https://www.motor1.com/reviews/721584/subaru-brz-ts-review/

Pakistan pacer Naseem Shah had won the hearts of millions of fans during the high-octane clash against India in the 19th match of the T20 World Cup at the Nassau County International Stadium in New York on Sunday. Shah had proved his mettle in the breathtaking clash against the Rohit Sharma-led time, during which the 21-year-old took three wickets and compiled an unbeaten 4-ball 10, hitting two fours. As Shah and his teammates could not manage to sweep past India, the former burst into tears, but he was comforted by Shaheen Shah Afridi. In one of the photos, Rohit Sharma also extended warmly gesture to Shah.Yesterday’s high-stakes clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan, held in New York, ended in disappointment for the Pakistani side. The team’s performance was marred by a string of failures from key players. Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir, both of whom enjoyed substantial backing from the cricket board, fell short of expectations.Iftikhar Ahmed, touted as the team’s finisher, failed to deliver, while the once-reliable opening duo of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan also struggled. In a match that will be remembered for Pakistan’s lackluster display, Naseem Shah emerged as the sole beacon of hope. The young fast bowler not only delivered an exceptional spell but also made a significant impact with the bat, fighting valiantly till the end. His efforts, however, were not enough to stave off another humiliating defeat on the international stage, leaving Naseem in tears. The Indian players, recognizing Naseem’s commendable performance, extended their appreciation, a gesture that did not go unnoticed by the cricketing fraternity. Social media platforms were abuzz with messages of support for Naseem, acknowledging his dedication and resilience amidst the team’s broader struggles. Cricket fans, though disheartened by the overall performance of the team, rallied behind Naseem Shah. The young pacer’s determination and fighting spirit have made him a standout figure in an otherwise disappointing campaign for Pakistan. https://www.samaa.tv/2087316246-naseem-shah-claims-fans-support-despite-indian-heartbreak

How much would you be willing to pay for a perfect movie star smile? For some, trying to achieve dazzlingly white, uniformly straight teeth without a Hollywood budget comes at a cost to their health as well as their wallet. The UK social media trend for “Turkey teeth” – named after influencers’ penchant for travelling abroad for budget veneers – may offer a cheaper alternative to more expensive cosmetic dentistry at reputable clinics – but it can come at the cost of oral health and may even prove life threatening. But the health risks don’t always outweigh the prospect of a gleaming grin.
