Investors likely will have to sweat out a summer during which it looks increasingly improbable that the Federal Reserve will be cutting interest rates. A batch of stronger-than-expected economic data coupled with fresh commentary from policymakers is pointing away from any near-term policy easing. Traders this week again shifted futures pricing, moving away from the likelihood of a reduction in rates in September and now anticipating just one cut by the end of the year. The broader reaction was not pleasant, with stocks suffering their worst day of 2024 on Thursday and the Dow Jones Industrial Average breaking what had been a five-week winning streak ahead of the Memorial Day break. “The economy may not be cooling off as much as the Fed would like,” said Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist at LPL Financial. “The market takes every bit of data and translates it to how the Fed sees it. So if the Fed is data dependent, the market is probably more data dependent.” Over the past week or so, the data has sent a pretty clear message: Economic growth is at least stable if not on the rise, while inflation is ever-present as consumers and policymakers alike remain wary of the high cost of living. Examples include weekly jobless claims, which a few weeks ago hit their highest level since late August 2023 but have since receded back to a trend that has indicated companies have not stepped up the pace of layoffs. Then there was a lower-profile survey release Thursday that showed stronger than expected expansion in both the services and manufacturing sectors and purchase managers reporting stronger inflation. No reason to cut Both data points came one day after the release of minutes from the last Federal Open Market Committee meeting indicating central bankers still lack the confidence to cut and even an unspecified few saying they could be open to hiking if inflation gets worse. On top of that, Fed Governor Christopher Waller earlier in the week said he would need to see several months’ worth of data indicating that inflation is easing before agreeing to lower rates. Put it together, and there’s not much reason for the Fed to be easing policy here. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/25/the-fed-probably-wont-deliver-any-interest-rate-cuts-this-summer-.html

SBP will launch a QR code payment system for Eid al-Adha animal purchases. SBP is working with 25 banks and 50 major livestock markets for this project. The initiative aims to facilitate secure transactions for sacrificial animal purchases.ISLAMABAD – The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is set to launch a QR code payment system under the Raast instant payment service, aimed at facilitating the purchase of sacrificial animals during Eid al-Adha. Speaking at the 17th “Mobile Commerce 2024” conference, SBP Deputy Director Ahmed Sameer announced the planned introduction of the QR system for this year’s Eid. The initiative involves collaboration with 25 banks and implementation in 50 major livestock markets across the country to streamline payment processes for the public. Sameer emphasized the project’s significance for both livestock breeders and sellers, aiming to enhance secure and efficient transactions for purchasing sacrificial animals. This system is expected to support digital banking transactions worth between 550 to 600 billion rupees during the festival. The Deputy Director pointed out that QR code payments offer a significant advancement over traditional methods, particularly due to the challenges and costs associated with installing point-of-sale (POS) machines. The QR payment system simplifies the process, making it accessible for small-scale traders and reducing cash dependency in the economy. This innovative payment system will be activated in 15 cities, including major urban centers such as Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Hyderabad, where SBP offices are located. The initiative will enable traders to receive online payments instantly by installing QR codes, thus revolutionizing the payment process for sacrificial animal purchases during Eid al-Adha. https://www.bolnews.com/latest/2024/05/state-bank-to-introduce-qr-codes-for-buying-qurbani-animals/

My GoPro was dead, and no one was filming. I’d been off-roading for about six and a half hours already. I definitely had a solid impression of what the refreshed F-150 Raptor R was all about, and I didn’t need to drive more.I buried the Raptor’s accelerator pedal and let the supercharged V-8 turn a lake bed into silt for the fourth time in a row, swinging wide of traffic-cone apexes, three-quarters sideways, with the four-wheel-drive on and the exhaust baffles wide open. I grinned like a lunatic. Now, I did have to test it a little, to be fair. The Raptor R is mildly updated under the hood for 2024. Ford dosed the intake with some Claritin, and breathing easier added 20 horsepower for a berserk total of 720—but what’s more important is what didn’t change. The same 5.2-liter supercharged V-8 resides in the bay, and with the V-8 Ram TRX biting the dust for 2024, the Raptor R stands 300 horsepower above its only other V-8 competition, the 420 horsepower Silverado ZR2. The Raptor R is the pinnacle of a (supposedly) dying breed, and it flies the V-8 flag proudly. Its exhaust note and supercharger whine is worth the price of admission; Getting the most-powerful half-ton truck ever built is the icing on the cake. The 20 added horsepower allow the Raptor R to take the crown from the previous record-holding 702-horsepower Ram TRX.The more exciting update, however, is in the wheel wells. Fox and Ford teamed up to revise the Raptor’s Live Valve suspension, which updates valving characteristics on the fly depending on drive mode and driving style. The new Dual Live Valve system works under compression and rebound (previously, it was only on compression). The new shocks are standard on any Raptor with 37-inch tires and all Raptor Rs. These shocks and redesigned CV axles allow Ford engineers to squeeze another half inch of travel out of the front suspension, for a maximum 13.5 inches. A new modular front bumper with an updated front fascia, rad Raptor R graphics, and a standard heads-up display—with one of the coolest shift light systems on the market—round out the changes. https://www.motor1.com/reviews/720497/2024-ford-raptor-first-drive-review/

Archer had a watching brief to start with on Saturday after England were inserted by Pakistan and saw his side reach 144-2 inside 15 overs thanks principally to Buttler's 23rd T20 international fifty but also a 23-ball 37 from Will Jacks. However, the hosts then lost five wickets for 25 runs as a clutch of batters scuffed to the fielders on the fence, meaning Archer's late boundaries were a welcome addition to the total.England's batting largely fired early on with Jacks and Buttler sharing a stand of 71 from 42 balls for the third wicket after the early exit of Phil Salt (13 off 9). Jacks' two sixes, both nailed down the ground, left the Sky Sports commentators purring, while Buttler struck a remarkable maximum over extra-cover with a reverse sweep off the expensive Shadab Khan (0-55). Jonny Bairstow (21 off 18) chipped in, too, but his dismissal - caught at deep backward square of Shaheen Shah Afridi (3-36) - triggered the middle-order malaise, with Harry Brook (1) bowled trying to cut a straight ball from economical left-arm spinner Imad (2-19), and Moeen Ali (4), Buttler and Chris Jordan (3) falling to seamers. Archer, though, carved Mohammad Amir for four over deep third from the first ball he faced and then sent the left-arm quick for six over long-on to end England's innings with a flourish.Archer was then on the receiving end of some big hitting as he stepped up to bowl the sixth over of the Pakistan innings, creamed back over his head by Babar Azam (32 off 26), before Fakhar Zaman (45 off 21) whipped him for four and six into the leg-side. https://www.skysports.com/cricket/news/12123/13142926/jofra-archer-takes-wickets-on-england-return-as-hosts-beat-pakistan-in-second-t20-international-at-edgbaston

ishi Sunak’s slim chance of pulling off a victory against the odds in July’s general election depends on voters buying the argument that tough decisions taken since he became prime minister are paying off. That claim will be tested over the next six weeks – with every piece of economic news more closely scrutinised than usual for evidence that the UK’s tentative economic recovery is gaining momentum or has started to falter. There are five key dates – crammed into a 10-day period in the middle of the campaign – to look out for. 11 June: labour market figures This could be one of the trickier pieces of economic news for Sunak to cope with since the last set of official data showed unemployment rising and job vacancies declining. Despite this evidence that the labour market is cooling, earnings growth remained strong, rising at an annual rate of 5.9%. In better news for the prime minister, wages have been rising more strongly than prices for the past 10 months, resulting in rising living standards. The Conservatives will say: four million jobs have been created since 2010 and workers are becoming better off. Labour will say: for the first time in recent history, voters will be worse off at the end of a parliament than they were at the start. One factor behind Sunak’s decision to call an election was the unexpectedly strong growth figures for the first three months of 2024, which showed national output 0.6% higher than in the final three months of 2023 and brought to an end the UK’s short and shallow recession. Paul Dales, the chief UK economist at the consultancy Capital Economics, expects gross domestic product to rise by 02% between March and April, pushing up the quarterly growth rate from 0.6% to 0.8%.This is probably the most important single piece of economic news during the campaign, given Sunak’s claim that the UK’s cost of living problem has now been cracked. The all-items annual inflation rate came down from 3.2% in March to 2.3% in April and is set to fall further in May. In part, that’s because consumer prices rose by 0.7% last May, a hefty increase that is unlikely to be repeated this year. Bruna Skarica, the chief UK economist at Morgan Stanley, sees the headline inflation rate falling to 2% – smack on the government’s target. Services inflation, which is closely watched by the Bank of England, should fall from 5.9% to 5.4%, Skarica says. The Conservatives will say: our tough action has brought stability to the economy. Labour will say: prices are 20% higher than they were at the start of the cost of living crisis and are still going up. https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/may/24/five-pieces-of-economic-news-that-could-affect-the-uk-election-result#img-1

Khan Yunis: In a cowshed in Gaza's Khan Yunis, zookeeper Fathi Ahmed Gomaa has created a temporary home for dozens of animals including lions and baboons, having fled with them from Israel's offensive in Rafah."We've moved all the animals we had, except for three big lions that remain (in Rafah)", he said. "I ran out of time and couldn't move them." Ahmed abandoned his zoo in Rafah when Israel ordered the evacuation of parts of the southern Gazan city. Before the offensive, the city on the border with Egypt had been spared a ground invasion and more than half of the Gaza Strip's po[CENSORED]tion was sheltering there. Now, the Israeli offensive has sent more than 800,000 people fleeing from Rafah, according to the UN, with Gomaa and his family among them. "I am appealing to the Israeli authorities: these animals have no connection to terrorism", Gomaa told AFP, saying he wanted their help in coordinating with aid agencies to rescue the lions left behind in Rafah. He fears they won't survive long on their own."Of course, within a week or 10 days, if we don't get them out they will die because they'll be left with no food or water." Gomaa said he had already lost several of his animals to the war. "Three lion cubs, five monkeys, a newborn monkey and nine squirrels," he said. And while the squawking of parrots fills the air, many of Gomaa's other birds are no longer with him.In the cowshed, Gomaa is making do with what he has, using improvised fencing to raise the heights of the pens so that their new inhabitants, spotted deer, can't leap out. https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/pics-gaza-zookeeper-flees-rafah-creates-temporary-home-for-animals-5738498

The Auto China show in Beijing is one of the biggest automotive events in the world. It brings together many players in the sector, who do not hesitate to come with their hands full of new products. Open for a few hours, it has already been the scene of several official revelations: Mini Aceman , restyled BMW i4 and Series 4 Gran Coupé , Volkswagen ID.Code , electric Mercedes G-Class … Mazda is added to the list with two vehicles presented: a large sedan almost 5 meters long called EZ-6, and an electric SUV concept called Arata for the moment.Let's start with the most concrete: the EZ-6. This replaces the old Mazda 6, now retired, with a size of 4.92 m long, 1.89 m wide and 1.49 m high. Its rear-wheel drive architecture and fluid style are clearly integrated into the Mazda universe, with a few gimmicks such as the very thin headlights framing a large grille or the rear lights incorporating circles like the rest of the range. However, this EZ-6 is the result of a partnership with the Chinese manufacturer Changan which distributes Mazda models in China. This can be seen from certain angles, such as at the rear where the trunk looks very different from the Mazda style. In fact, the Mazda EZ-6 is based on the Deepal SL03, a Chinese electric sedan produced by Changan since 2022 (see photo gallery). Chic interior Ditto on board, where the Japanese sedan partly takes over the dashboard of its technical twin. For example, it offers the same 14.6-inch central screen (the largest ever used at Mazda), digital instrumentation behind the steering wheel including a few tactile keys as well as a head-up display. The whole thing looks chic with colored leather and wood or aluminum inserts. The overhead center console is massive, and has air conditioning controls on a screen at the rear to pamper the passengers in the second row, as is tradition in China.Rather late on the electric side, Mazda benefits from Changan's expertise for the technical part by using the EPA1 platform and the engines of its cousin. Mazda is currently not very talkative about the technical characteristics, simply mentioning an ideal 50:50 weight distribution, a multi-link rear suspension or even an active rear spoiler to improve stability at high speed. The sedan will be offered in two variants: a 100% electric version offering around 600 km of autonomy according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, and a PHEV version thanks to a range extender ( probably like our MX-30 REV in Europe ) which would offer up to 1,000 km of range on a single tank of fuel. Price and release date For the moment, this electric sedan is only planned for China, although an arrival in Europe or other global markets cannot necessarily be ruled out. In any case, marketing in China is planned by the end of 2024, at a price still unknown. https://www.auto-moto.com/berline-familiale/mazda-devoile-au-salon-de-pekin-sa-nouvelle-berline-electrifiee-ez-6-33701

We know, because even our favourite time to snack on that hot samosa or crispy wafers is tea time — usually between 4-6 pm. But, turns out, we are doing a gross injustice to our health by doing so. According to longevity biohacker Prashant Desai, those two hours are our biggest enemy, as he explains: “You start your day well as you have rested enough, had breakfast, and gone to work. The first seven or eight hours of your day are highly motivated and productive. But by 4 pm, that discipline fades, and you start snacking. This habit carries into dinner and late-night snacking. To stay healthy, avoid eating between 4 pm and 6 pm,” Desai said on Instagram. He suggested having a glass of water, chaach (buttermilk), or nimbu pani (lime water) at 3.30 pm. “If you’re still hungry, eat some nuts with black coffee or black tea or drink a protein shake,” said Desai, stating that these tips will help you maintain discipline between 4 pm to 6 pm and stay on track. Dr Vinoda Kumari, deputy chief medical officer, Jindal Naturecure Institute said that there are many reasons why snacking between 4-6 pm might be troublesome. “First of all, dinnertime is almost here, which might encourage overindulgence and upset your appetite for a healthy meal later. Second, the snacks eaten at this time of day are frequently heavy in fats, sweets, and calories, all of which can lead to energy slumps and weight gain. Furthermore, eating a late-afternoon snack may obstruct your body’s natural hunger signals, making it more difficult to identify true hunger signals in the future,” said Dr Kumari. As such, she recommended choosing “light, nutrient-dense foods that provide continuous energy and satiety”. “Think of choices such as whole-grain crackers with roasted chana, makhanas or foxnuts, fresh fruits, and almonds,” Dr Kumari told indianexpress.com, adding that these options provide a good ratio of protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates to keep you feeling full and content until dinner. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/food-wine/not-snack-between-4-6-pm-risks-energy-experts-9346816/

NEW YORK: Fake accounts posting about the US presidential election are proliferating on the social media platform X, according to a social media analysis company’s report shared with Reuters exclusively ahead of its release on Friday. Analysts from Israeli tech company Cyabra, which uses a subset of artificial intelligence called machine learning to identify fake accounts, found that 15 percent of X accounts praising former President Donald Trump and criticizing President Joe Biden are fake. The report also found that 7 percent of accounts praising Biden, a Democrat, and criticizing Trump, a Republican, are fake. Cyabra’s study is based on a review of posts on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, over two months beginning March 1. The review included analyzing po[CENSORED]r hashtags and determining sentiment in terms of whether posts are positive, negative or neutral. The analysis shows that newly detected fake accounts had increased up to tenfold during March and April. The report cites 12,391 inauthentic pro-Trump profiles out of 94,363 total and 803 inauthentic pro-Biden profiles out of 10,065 total. A spokesperson for X did not respond to a request for comment about the fake accounts, nor did representatives from the White House and Trump campaign. X and other social media platforms have been under greater scrutiny since 2016, when Russia interfered in the US presidential election in an attempt to boost Trump’s candidacy and harm his opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton. Election officials and online misinformation experts are again watching for misleading narratives ahead of the Nov. 5 election. The fake accounts praising Trump this cycle are part of a coordinated campaign to sway public opinion and influence online discussions, Cyabra said. The report did not identify the individuals or groups behind the campaign. Cyabra said it made that determination based on evidence including the use of identical hashtags and the fact that fake accounts published posts and comments at the same time. The report found that the fake pro-Trump accounts pushed two main messages: “Vote for Trump” and “Biden is the worst president the US has ever had.” “The level of coordination suggests that there is a nefarious objective and that there is a whole operation in order to change people’s opinion,” said Cyabra’s vice president, Rafi Mendelsohn. The fake accounts backing Biden are not part of a coordinated campaign, the report said, as the hallmarks of a coordinated campaign — such as fake accounts posting at the same time — were not identified. X, which was publicly held until its 2022 takeover by billionaire Elon Musk, has long downplayed the use of fake accounts on its platform. Twitter said in May 2022 that fewer than 5 percent of its daily active users were “false or spam” based on an internal review of accounts. At the time, Cyabra had estimated that 13.7 percent of Twitter profiles were inauthentic. In an X post on April 4, Musk wrote that a “system purge of bots and trolls” was under way and that the company “will be tracing the people responsible and bringing the full force of the law to bear upon them.” In October the company tested its “Not a Bot” program in New Zealand and the Philippines to combat bots and spammers. https://www.arabnews.pk/node/2516246/media
