After years of China being Germany’s main trading partner, the U.S. looks like it’s quietly taking that top spot as the year progresses. Combined exports and imports between Germany and the U.S. totaled 63 billion euros ($68 billion) between January and March of 2024. Meanwhile, trade between Germany and China came to just below 60 billion euros, according to CNBC calculations. Reuters first reported the change on Thursday. Several factors played a role in the move, Carsten Brzeski, global head of macro research at ING Research, told CNBC. “This shift is the result of several factors: strong growth in the U.S. has boosted demand for German products. […] At the same time, decoupling from China, weaker domestic demand in China and China being able to produce goods it previously imported from Germany (mainly cars) reduced German exports to China,” he said. China has been Germany’s biggest trading partner for years, but the gap between China and the U.S. narrowed in recent years. The U.S. has also long been a bigger market for German exports than China, Holger Schmieding, chief economist at Berenberg Bank, told CNBC. While the U.S. share of German exports had been growing in recent years, China’s has been decreasing, he noted. “The Chinese economy is stuttering and German companies are facing stiffer competition from subsidised Chinese firms,” Schmieding said. The key difference is that now the U.S. is also becoming more important when it comes to imports, he pointed out.Germany has been pursuing a new China strategy, urging companies to “de-risk” from China last year. China is to remain a partner for Germany, the country’s government has stressed, and there should not be a “de-coupling” — but “systemic rivalry” has increasingly characterized the relationship between the two. Tensions have also increased between the European Union and China, with the two launching investigations into each other’s trade practices and threatening to slap tariffs on imports. Last month, a survey by German economic institute Ifo found that the amount of companies who say they are dependent on China fell from 46% in February of 2022 to 37% in February of 2024. This was linked to fewer companies relying on inputs from Chinese manufacturers, the report said. “The fact that the U.S. has become Germany’s largest trading partner indeed illustrates changing trade patterns and the gradual decoupling from China,” Brzeski said. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/10/the-us-is-now-germanys-biggest-trading-partner-ahead-of-china.html

The Center for Biological Diversity has secured court-ordered deadlines from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for final Endangered Species Act protections for 10 species, critical habitat designation for three, and decisions about whether protections are warranted for two. The species live across the U.S., from the Southeast to Texas and New Mexico to the West Coast. “We’re suffering an extinction crisis that threatens to undermine our way of life, so I’m relieved these 15 remarkable species will get the protections they so badly need,” said Noah Greenwald, endangered species director at the Center. “From burly alligator snapping turtles to cute but ferocious martens, these are some of my favorite species and it would just be so tragically sad if we lost them.” The alligator snapping turtle found across the Southeast, the Suwanee snapping turtle which is a distinct species found in the Suwannee River in Florida and Georgia, Washington’s Mount Rainier white-tailed ptarmigan, New Mexico’s least chipmunk, and six species of Texas mussels will all receive final Endangered Species Act protections by the end of the year. Humboldt martens in California and Oregon, a Tennessee fish called the Barrens topminnow, and the Pearl River map turtle, which lives in Mississippi and Louisiana, will all receive designations of protected critical habitat. There will be a protection decision for the Northwest’s tall western penstemon flower by September 1st, 2026, and for Nevada’s Fish Lake Valley tui chub fish by May 17th, 2025. Despite the accelerating pace of wildlife loss in North America and across the globe, the Service has been chronically slow at providing Endangered Species Act protections to imperiled species, averaging new protection for just 14 species per year over the last three years despite hundreds waiting for protection. On April 17th, 115 groups asked Congress to increase funding for endangered species threefold — to $857 million — including $70 million for listing species. While lack of funding is part of the problem, there’s also a lack of political will at the agency to carry out its regulatory duties required under the Endangered Species Act. “If we’re going to save these 15 irreplaceable species and the rest of the natural world, the Fish and Wildlife Service needs a complete culture shift,” said Greenwald. “The agency’s mantra of working with partners and voluntary conservation is largely a failure that greenwashes industries that provide the barest of crumbs for wildlife habitat. The Service must implement the Endangered Species Act as worded.” https://worldanimalnews.com/legal-victory-secures-endangered-species-act-protections-for-10-species-across-the-united-states/

Cars are too complex. What the hell do I need facial recognition or a 30-inch screen for? I'm not watching Avatar: The Way Of Water in 4K. That's why it was so refreshing to spend time in the Nissan Versa. The Versa is currently the cheapest car in America. You can get a base S model with a manual transmission for $17,225 with destination (in theory, if you can find one). With so many cheap cars going the way of the dodo, the Versa is a last bastion of affordability… until it too is discontinued. An argument against cheap cars is that Americans simply don't want them. But it's not true. In the first three months of 2024, Nissan nearly doubled Versa sales over last year. A facelift helps, but even in 2021—a historically bad year for new car sales—Nissan sold more than 60,000 Versas. People still want affordable cars, just look at the numbers. It's easy to see why people want the Versa. Even though it is inexpensive, it doesn't feel cheap. The base S model has a decent 7.0-inch touchscreen, Nissan's Safety Shield 360 suite standard (which includes automatic emergency braking, a lane-departure warning, and high-beam assist), and the most headroom and legroom of any car in the class. It's comfy. Even the fully loaded SR model I drove costs less than $23,000. That gets you a bigger 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, adaptive cruise control, fancy paint options (like Scarlet Ember), and cloth seats with a faux leather-trimmed dash. The fully loaded Versa feels about as nice a mid-range Buick, which says a lot. The black-on-black, cloth-and-pleather combo looks bland, but orange stitching helps offset the visual monotony. And the overall interior design looks clean. The center touchscreen is crisp and looks modern, too, and CarPlay is a breeze to use. The Versa was designed to get you from point A to point B without frills, so it's not a thrill to drive. The 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine delivers a no-nonsense 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission. The base model comes with a five-speed manual. There's just enough power to move the Versa out of its own way, but you will have to bury the go-fast pedal to reach highway speeds. https://www.motor1.com/reviews/718966/2024-nissan-versa-review-cheapest-car/

The Dukes won their last home series of the Sun Belt regular season against Marshall this weekend. JMU won Game 1, 8-5 and won the second meeting, 5-3. The Dukes look for the series sweep over the Thundering Herd on Sunday, May 12. The Diamond Dukes have a legitimate shot to make an NCAA regional for the first time in 13 years. Let’s take a look at the Dukes’ season up until this point and what they need to do to make the NCAA tournament once again. James Madison’s offense has been electric this year. Led by junior catcher Jason Schiavone and junior center fielder Fenwick Trimble. Trimble has been hot this year, the center fielder is slashing .365/.445/.645 (batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage). He had a pair of homers in Saturday’s game against Marshall which raised his home run total to 13 on the year. The leader on the team in homers is Schiavone with 15. Schiavone’s defense behind the dish has been stellar all year, recording a .990 fielding percentage. That consistency behind the dish along with his power has been a game changer for JMU. The Dukes have a batting average of .300 this season which is up slightly from last year. They have also been stellar on the base paths in 2024. Mike Mancini leads the squad with 24 stolen bags, second-best in the SBC. The Dukes have been one of the best offenses in the conference because of these contributions. JMU’s bats can get hot in an instant which makes them an extremely scary team to face in a postseason setting. The pitching staff for the Dukes is where some concerns can arise in terms of their possible NCAA tournament appearance. JMU’s starters Donovan Burke and Max Kuhl have ERAs of 3.88 and 4.58 respectively. Donovan has one of the best pick off moves in the country which is a lethal tool for the Dukes pitching room. The bullpen has been hit or miss depending on the matchup this year, at times the ‘pen has shut down opponents but other times it has blown up leads. Their performance will determine how far this team will progress into June. Hunter Entsminger has the best ERA out of the relievers with a 2.08 ERA through 26 IP. Entsminger had an efficient outing in Game 2 against the Thundering Herd, in his 18th appearance of the season the redshirt senior pitcher went 3.2 allowing no hits, no runs and struck out two Marshall batters. Senior RHP Joe Vogotsky has been the team’s go-to closer, racking up a eight saves this season, the second most in the Sun Belt. Out of all the Dukes’ bullpen arms, junior RHP Todd Mozoki and freshman RHP Jackson Logar are the two names to watch to step up down the stretch. JMU needs to find consistent pitching, specifically out of the bullpen, for its success to continue heading into the Sun Belt tournament. The resume for JMU is solid with five games remaining in the regular season. It has a win over a top 5 ranked Arkansas team to start the season as well as a midweek win over Virginia Tech and a sweep against Georgia Southern. A series sweep over App State is another notch in the cap for the Dukes throughout their conference schedule. Unfortunately, the road record for the Dukes leaves a lot to be desired. Away from Veterans Memorial Park, JMU has only won 7 of its 21 contests. What is keeping James Madison’s RPI so high is the Dukes’ strength of schedule. According to D1 Baseball, they have the 20th hardest schedule in the country. Ikenberry has put together a challenging schedule for this team and they have performed admirably (30-19, 15-11 SBC). JMU is likely going to have to sweep Marshall and then win 2 out of their last 4 to safely secure their spot in an NCAA regional. The Dukes are right on the bubble of making the NCAA tournament and need to perform well throughout the end of this year. A tall but doable task is ahead of the Diamond Dukes. Marlin Ikenberry has preached a day-by-day approach to this group and that mentality will need to be in full effect against upcoming opponents Virginia Tech and Troy. The Dukes are currently sitting in fifth position in the SBC but they swept 4th position App State earlier this season. We will see in short order what JMU is made of going into conference tournament play. https://jmusportsnews.com/2024/05/12/bubble-watch-jmu-baseball-gears-up-for-final-stretch-ahead-of-post-season-play/

Munk, 33, will travel with the guests and serve the meal himself, from a small kitchen. He says his menu will be inspired by the impact of space innovation. “We want to tell stories through the food,” Munk says. “We … want to talk and highlight some of the research that’s been done through the last 60 years.” “I think that will make an even stronger impact when you’re up there and looking down,” added Munk, who will fly with the six ticket buyers.Spaceship Neptune is more of a balloon than a rocket. The company says its pressurised capsule, attached to a balloon, will lift to an altitude of around 100,000 feet (30,480 meters) above sea level where guests will dine while watching the sun rise over the [CENSORED]ture of the Earth. Organisers are promising an out-of-this-world experience for those with an appetite for adventure. But such an astronomic menu comes with a fittingly astronomic price tag — $495,000 per ticket.Organisers say the trip will last six hours and that they are they are still in discussion with potential participants. It’s one of the latest offerings by private firms that include Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, and SpaceX. The flight won’t technically reach “space” — Spaceship Neptune will ascend to around 19 miles (30 kilometers), well below the Karman line, the boundary separating Earth’s atmosphere and outer space, which is some 62 miles (100 kilometers) from Earth.Munk’s menu is expected to be a far cry from meals eaten by past and present astronauts. The first man in space, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, squeezed beef and liver paste into his mouth from an aluminum tube. To save on weight, astronauts aboard the International Space Station usually dine on dishes packaged in rehydratable containers, including soups and casseroles. There have been some exceptions. In 2006, French master chef Alain Ducasse created special gourmet food that could be used for celebratory meals aboard the ISS. The tinned dishes included typical Mediterranean ingredients, such as olives, tomatoes, quails and swordfish. Though Munk is mysterious about his menu, he says he’s planning to incorporate glow-in-dark stars made from aerogel and jellyfish protein. “We are also working on an edible piece of space junk from a satellite,” he said. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/food-wine/fine-dining-michelin-starred-chef-upper-atmosphere-9323852/

Russia is blaming a Ukrainian strike after an entire section of an apartment building collapsed following an explosion in Belgorod. CCTV from the scene shows a large blast near the base of the 10-storey block and then the building falling in. The regional governor said two bodies had been pulled from the rubble. At least 19 people have been injured. The Russian city is near the border with Kharkiv in Ukraine, where Moscow's troops launched an offensive on Friday. The Belgorod region has often been targeted by Ukrainian forces since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but previously Ukrainian officials have said cross-border strikes do not target civilians. 'He could not escape' The regional governor of Belgorod, Vyacheslav Gladkov, accused Ukraine of bombarding the region, describing the cause of the explosion as a Ukrainian shell. Kyiv has cast doubt on that account, with one official suggesting it may have been a guided bomb dropped by a Russian plane, intended for Ukraine, but whose glide wings hadn't opened. Pictures from the scene show rescuers removing debris by hand in a search for survivors. Surrounding apartments have been evacuated due to fears of the main building collapsing further. Mr Gladkov added that people are believed to be trapped in the rubble. One resident told Russian state news agency RIA Novosti her husband was in their bedroom in the building when the blast went off and was injured in the head and face. "He did not have the time" to escape, she said. A spokesperson for the Russian Investigative Committee said a criminal case has been launched. The incident comes as "intense battles" continue just across the border in north-eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces have made incursions into the Kharkiv region. In his evening address on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Russian offensive has displaced thousands. "The idea behind the attacks in the Kharkiv region is to stretch our forces and undermine the morale and motivation of the Ukrainians' ability to defend themselves," he added. The defence ministry in Moscow claims its forces have captured a number of villages there, while Kyiv says it has been carrying out counter-attacks. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68998913

LONDON — A slew of commentary from the Bank of England and a better-than-expected economic growth number have left traders and investors scrambling to refine their bets on when the U.K. central bank will start to cut its benchmark rate. Investors had been eagerly awaiting any indicators in the hope that they would provide hints about when cuts may begin. The BOE’s benchmark rate helps price all sorts of loans and mortgages in the country and has risen rapidly over recent years to help tame high inflation. Markets on Friday were pricing in an around 48% chance of a rate reduction in June according to LSEG data, slightly higher than Thursday’s 45% probability. Economists at Swiss bank UBS were among those who shifted their view on when the BOE may lower interest rates, saying they were now expecting the first rate cut to take place in June rather than August. “The broader message and the tone of the MPC were more dovish than we had anticipated,” they said in a note published after the BOE’s latest interest rate decision. The central bank on Thursday said it would leave interest rates unchanged for now, and stressed that a June rate cut was in no way guaranteed. Two members of the Monetary Policy Committee voted to reduce rates, one more than at the BOE’s previous meeting.“June is not a fait accompli, but each meeting is a new decision,” BOE Governor Andrew Bailey said in a post-meeting news conference. UBS cited changes to the BOE’s forward guidance, inflation expectations and comments from Bailey regarding the impact of increased national living wages on overall wage growth as reasons for its changed expectations. The Swiss bank now expects rates to be cut in June, August and November, it said, by 25 basis points each. The BOE’s interest rate decision was followed Friday by the latest U.K. gross domestic product data, which showed that the country’s economy grew by more than expected in the first quarter of 2024. GDP increased by 0.6% compared with the 0.4% estimate, marking the first quarter since the end of 2021 in with GDP growth exceeded 0.5%. The economy thereby exited the technical recession it had entered after two consecutive quarters of contraction in the second half of last year. “This is undeniably a strong number and suggests the U.K. economy is shaking off its woes from 2023,” Nomura analysts said in a note published Friday. This could suggest that inflationary pressures are persistent and the economy is more resilient to higher interest rates, they noted. The BOE on Thursday warned that indicators of persistent inflation “remain elevated,” but also said it was anticipating inflation to close in on the 2% target in the near term. “This [GDP] release further strengthens our view that the Bank of England will need to keep policy restrictive for longer than markets are pricing to bear down on inflation,” Nomura analysts said, adding they expected the central bank to wait until August before cutting rates. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/10/uk-gdp-markets-reprice-bank-of-england-rate-cut-bets.html

All dogs coming into the U.S. from other countries must be at least 6 months old and microchipped to help prevent the spread of rabies, according to new government rules published Wednesday. The new rules require vaccination for dogs that have been in countries where rabies is common. The update applies to dogs brought in by breeders or rescue groups as well as pets traveling with their U.S. owners. “This new regulation is going to address the current challenges that we’re facing,” said Emily Pieracci, a rabies expert at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who was involved in drafting the updated regulations. The CDC posted the new rules in the federal register on Wednesday. They take effect Aug. 1 when a temporary 2021 order expires. That order suspended bringing in dogs from more than 100 countries where rabies is still a problem. The new rules require all dogs entering the U.S. to be at least 6 months, old enough to be vaccinated if required and for the shots to take effect; have a microchip placed under their skin with a code that can be used to verify rabies vaccination; and have completed a new CDC import form. There may be additional restrictions and requirements based on where the dog was the previous six months, which may include blood testing from CDC-approved labs. The CDC regulations were last updated in 1956, and a lot has changed, Pieracci said. More people travel internationally with their pets, and more rescue groups and breeders have set up overseas operations to meet the demand for pets, she said. Now, about 1 million dogs enter the U.S. each year.Dogs were once common carriers of the rabies virus in the U.S. but the type that normally circulates in dogs was eliminated through vaccinations in the 1970s. The virus invades the central nervous system and is usually a fatal disease in animals and humans. It’s most commonly spread through a bite from an infected animal. There is no cure for it once symptoms begin.Four rabid dogs have been identified entering the U.S. since 2015, and officials worried more might get through. CDC officials also were seeing an increase of incomplete or fraudulent rabies vaccination certificates and more puppies denied entry because they weren’t old enough to be fully vaccinated. A draft version of the updated regulations last year drew a range of public comments. Angela Passman, owner of a Dallas company that helps people move their pets internationally, supports the new rules. It can be especially tricky for families that buy or adopt a dog while overseas and then try to bring it to the U.S., she said. The update means little change from how things have been handled in recent years, she said. “It’s more work for the pet owner, but the end result is a good thing,” said Passman, who is a board member for the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association. But Jennifer Skiff said some of the changes are unwarranted and too costly. She works for Animal Wellness Action, a Washington group focused on preventing animal cruelty that helps organizations import animals. She said those groups work with diplomats and military personnel who have had trouble meeting requirements, a reason some owners were forced to leave their dogs behind. https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/traveling-dogs-us-new-cdc-rules-follow-rcna151362

LONDON -- Ford Motor is rethinking its plan to sell only full-electric cars in Europe by 2030 as EV sales fail to take off in the region. Ford in 2021 announced its goal of selling only battery-electric passenger cars in Europe by the end of the decade. The target was more ambitious than the European Union's plan to allow only zero-emissions cars to be sold after 2035 as part of its CO2 reduction strategy. Ford now says it could continue to sell combustion engine cars after 2030 if buyers want them. "If we see strong demand, for instance for plug-in hybrid vehicles, we will offer them," said Martin Sander, head of Ford's passenger cars business in Europe. Demand for electric cars was "softer" than Ford had originally planned, he said, and the company is not hitting its ambitious targets. There is a clear trajectory to electrification, Sander said. "We just have to manage our way towards 100 percent electric drivetrains," he told the Financial Times Future of the Car summit on Tuesday. Ford has completed a $2 billion investment to convert its factory in Cologne, Germany, to build full-electric vehicles based on Volkswagen Group's MEB platform. It will start series production of the Explorer all-electric compact SUV in Cologne in June and will unveil a second vehicle built on the MEB platform, also in June. Later this year Ford will also reveal the Puma Gen-E battery-electric version of its best-selling small SUV built in Craiova, Romania. The automaker has also started selling electric versions of its Transit Custom one-ton van in Turkey despite a slower than expected take-up of EV vans. Ford is reducing its lineup of combustion engine cars as it focuses on EVs and its highly profitable light commercial vehicles business. It ended production of its Fiesta small car in Cologne last year, It will also cease production of the Focus car in Saarlouis in 2025. The automaker has stopped building its Mondeo midsize car and Galaxy/S-Max minivans at its Valencia factory in Spain. Ford is considering building a new ‘multi-energy’ passenger car model in Valencia, which currently builds the Kuga compact SUV that is available in plug-in hybrid, full hybrid or combustion-engine versions. "We have a plan for our plant in Valencia," Sander said. Avoiding U.K. fines In the U.K., its largest European market, Ford is seeking ways to avoid paying heavy fines under the country's zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate that aims to encourage sales of electric cars. The mandate sti[CENSORED]tes that automakers must sell an ever-larger percentage of EVs every year, starting with 22 percent in 2024. https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/ford-revises-plan-be-all-electric-europe

Vitality County Championship Division One, The Spitfire Ground, (day two) Worcestershire 618-7d: Holder 123*, Roderick 117, Waite 100*; Evison 3-58, Parkinson 3-201 Kent: 111-2: Bell-Drummond 54*; Leach 2-12 Kent (1 pt) trail Worcestershire (3 pts) by 507 runs Match scorecard Jason Holder and Matthew Waite both hit unbeaten centuries as Worcestershire built a daunting lead against Kent on day two of their County Championship match at Canterbury. Joe Leach then took two early wickets to reduce Kent to 15-2, before the hosts rallied to finish on 111-2 at stumps, a deficit of 507. Daniel Bell-Drummond and Jack Leaning were the not-out batters on 54 and 43 respectively. Earlier, Holder was unbeaten on 123 while Waite made 100 before the visitors declared on 618-7 in their first innings, with Adam Hose contributing 90. Joey Evison had Kent’s best bowling figures with 3-58, while Matt Parkinson claimed 3-201 from 44.5 overs. Kent finally made a breakthrough in the 117th over after Worcestershire began day two on 308-5. Evison initially had a shout for lbw against Hose turned down, but the next delivery hit him low on the pad in front of middle. Rob Jones went for 37 when he swished at Parkinson and was caught by Bell-Drummond at first slip, but it was 424-7 at lunch and Holder then wreaked havoc. He glanced Parkinson down the legside for two to reach his half-century and reached three figures with a single off Leaning. Waite was more measured, hitting just two boundaries on his way to fifty, but the second half of his innings included a six to reach 99, then a scrambled single to bring up three figures, at which point the visitors finally declared. Kent’s reply got off to a grim start when Leach removed Ben Compton, caught at slip, with the fifth ball of the innings. Zak Crawley then recorded his fourth single-digit score in five innings when Leach had him caught down the leg side. But Bell-Drummond and Leaning responded with a partnership worth 96. https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/articles/cy9x59ze9j1o

Have you ever felt like something’s holding you back from reaching your full potential? It might be more common than you think. Former doctor and content creator Ali Abdaal posted a reel on Instagram describing a phenomenon called the Pygmalion effect. This term was coined by Harvard psychologist Robert Rosenthal in 1968; which could be the thing holding you back in life.“They found that if teachers had higher expectations of certain children, then they would perform better, and if they had lower expectations of certain children, then those ones would do worse.” When the study was released, Abdaal says, this phenomenon grew in po[CENSORED]rity as people realised it wasn’t just limited to the classroom, but that these expectations could influence behaviour at work and at home; and more importantly, with our own selves. “Having low expectations of our own abilities can cause us to underperform,” he says.Mehezabin Dordi, clinical psychologist, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital elaborates, “When individuals are believed to possess certain qualities or abilities, they tend to fulfil those expectations, whether positive or negative. This effect highlights the powerful role of expectations in shaping behaviour and outcomes.”Some common manifestations of the Pygmalion effect in everyday life The Pygmalion effect manifests in various aspects of everyday life, such as education, work, and relationships. In education, Dordi says, teacher expectations can significantly impact student performance, with students living up to or down to the expectations set for them. In the workplace, manager expectations can influence employee productivity and job performance. Employees who are perceived as competent and capable are more likely to be given challenging tasks, opportunities for advancement, and recognition for their achievements, while those who are perceived as less competent may be overlooked for promotions and career development opportunities. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/pygmalion-effect-potential-success-confidence-positivity-9311485/

Madame Tussauds London has made a special adjustment to Justin Bieber's wax figure, a day after the singer and his wife Hailey Bieber announced their pregnancy, The tribute now features a baby carrier, "to help him get some all-important practice in ahead of the big arrival," according to a statement from the po[CENSORED]r tourist attraction. The change gives a playful nod to Justin's early hit song, "Baby, Baby, Baby, Oh!" Madame Tussauds is known for keeping up with celebrity headlines by making changes to its iconic wax figures. After Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's split in 2016, their wax statues were separated, while Brad's figure was previously repositioned away from ex-wife Jennifer Aniston's when their marriage ended. In 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wax figures were moved out of the royal family section after they chose to step back from official duties. The Biebers shared their pregnancy announcement on Thursday in matching social media posts. The couple is seen seemingly renewing their vows in a video before the camera reveals Hailey's growing baby bump. The two initially met at a Today show event in 2009 but didn't start dating until 2015. Despite a few ups and downs, they married in a civil ceremony in 2018 before walking down the aisle again at a grand celebration in South Carolina. Hailey reminisced about their early days together in 2019 for Vogue, saying, "One day Justin walked into Hillsong and was like, 'Hey, you got older.' I was like, 'Yeah, what's up?'" Their friendship evolved into a close bond, and they became best friends before dating again. Now, after nearly five years of marriage, Justin and Hailey are preparing to welcome their first child together. https://tribune.com.pk/story/2466113/justin-biebers-wax-figure-gets-makeover-after-pregnancy-news

Where it causes trouble for animals and plants is when it happens very quickly — leaving species not enough time to adapt and survive.Something similar may be an underappreciated risk in the economic world. Small businesses, which account for almost half of the US workforce and more than 45% of GDP, are finding it increasingly difficult to cope with hotter-for-longer summers, as reported in our latest Big Take DC podcast. Listen to the podcast here. Take Cherryshack Orchard, a pick-your-own fruit farm near Spokane, Washington. The Pacific Northwest isn’t a region known for extreme heat. But that’s changing. Owner Brad Erovick says there’s now “very dry and high heat for almost all summer,” with multi-day stretches of temperatures above 105 Fahrenheit (41 Celsius). That’s different from when the business began 17 years ago, he says. The heat not only leaves customers less eager to go out and pick fruit, it also contributes to wildfires — which further reduce foot traffic. It’s unclear what will happen if the summer temperatures just keep climbing. “It's a question that's looming, I guess,” Erovick says.Even places accustomed to heat face challenges. Like Texas, which had an unusually powerful heat wave last summer. Small businesses including restaurants were hit with a double-whammy: a surge in the cost of electricity thanks to the increased demands on the state’s power grid from air-conditioning use and a decline in revenue as more customers stayed home. Emily Kerr, an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, says one Houston restaurant reported the worst customer traffic it had experienced since it opened in 1967. Services businesses aren’t the only ones to feel the effects. Manufacturers are also hit, via weaker productivity, Kerr says. Temperature-sensitive worksites are particularly vulnerable. More broadly, “manufacturing companies were having to give workers more breaks” to allow them to recover from extra exertion in hotter conditions, she says.Net losses to the Texas state economy from last year’s heat wave amounted to $9.5 billion, according to estimates by Ray Perryman, who runs an economic research firm out of Waco, Texas. Hot weather might not have been a traditional concern for economists. But it’s becoming apparent that, for a swath of the economy, it will become an increasingly important consideration. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-05-10/world-economy-latest-climate-change-and-small-businesses?srnd=homepage-europe

Although Eid-ul-Adha is still over a month away, discussions about the prices of sacrificial animals have already begun, fueled by the pervasive inflation affecting every household in Pakistan. It’s evident that this year, the prices of sacrificial animals will be significantly higher than in previous years, driven not only by inflation but also by the surge in meat consumption, animal exports, and smuggling from Pakistan, all of which have contributed to the escalating costs of cattle. As in previous years, the government has established animal markets (mandis) across the country, especially in major cities like Karachi and Lahore, where animals have already started arriving. In Pakistan, goats and cows are the preferred sacrificial animals. Last year, a suitable goat, yielding around 25 kg of meat, ranged between Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 60,000. However, this year, the cost for a similar goat has surged to Rs. 55,000 to Rs. 70,000. Furthermore, high-value goats, typically priced between Rs. 1.25 lakh to Rs. 1.5 lakh, have skyrocketed to Rs. 2 lakh this year. The emergence of lumpy skin disease among bulls in Pakistan in 2023 caused a decrease in supply, resulting in increased prices compared to the previous year. In terms of bulls, last year, a bull weighing 3 maunds was priced between Rs. 120,000 to Rs. 130,000. This year, however, the price range has increased to Rs. 150,000 to Rs. 200,000. These current prices are already high, and experts predict that they will continue to rise as Eid approaches. Due to a shortage of cattle caused by smuggling and exports, there are fears that prices may reach even higher levels closer to Eid. https://mmnews.tv/what-are-the-average-prices-of-sacrificial-animals-in-pakistan-this-year/
