Top Stories Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in France to begin a three-nation swing through Europe to bolster ties, with stops in Hungary and Serbia. The euro zone is awaiting a vote of confidence from its own consumers, and a policymaker showed optimism at recent inflation data. The yen extended losses amid focus on Japan’s interest-rate outlook and after the US Treasury secretary urged caution in currency interventions. Housing in Crisis A widely covered surge in authorized and irregular migration into the US is set to shape November’s US presidential election.Yet for all the political rancor, those lofty immigration rates remain largely supportive for the economy, as we have recently written in this newsletter here and here. And the scale of the increase actually pales in comparison with other advanced economies where a migrant wave is colliding with a chronic shortage of homes to house them, undermining living standards. For every 1,000 residents, Canada brought in 32 people last year, versus fewer than 10 in the US. Put another way: Over the past two years, 2.4 million people arrived in Canada, more than New Mexico’s po[CENSORED]tion, yet Canada barely added enough housing for the residents of Albuquerque. Canada, Australia and UK Beat US in Annual Po[CENSORED]tion GrowthAnd it’s a similar story in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. In fact, as we explore in today’s BigTake, some thirteen economies across the developed world were in per-capita recessions at the end of last year, according to exclusive analysis by Bloomberg Economics. Advanced Economies Face Declining GDP Per CapitaThe upshot: Rising home prices, soaring rents, sticky inflation, and declining living standards. That’s a toxic cocktail for the electoral prospects of the UK’s Rishi Sunak, Canada’s Justin Trudeau and Australia’s Anthony Albanese. And the political reality is that the longer voters in the UK, Australia, Canada and similar economies see their living standards go backwards, the more their opposition to rapid immigration programs will harden. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-05-06/world-economy-latest-record-immigration-collides-with-housing-crisis

Animal behavior research relies on careful observation of animals. Researchers might spend months in a jungle habitat watching tropical birds mate and raise their young. They might track the rates of physical contact in cattle herds of different densities. Or they could record the sounds whales make as they migrate through the ocean.Animal behavior research can provide fundamental insights into the natural processes that affect ecosystems around the globe, as well as into our own human minds and behavior. I study animal behavior—and also the research reported by scientists in my field. One of the challenges of this kind of science is making sure our own assumptions don't influence what we think we see in animal subjects. Like all people, how scientists see the world is shaped by biases and expectations, which can affect how data is recorded and reported. For instance, scientists who live in a society with strict gender roles for women and men might interpret things they see animals doing as reflecting those same divisions. The scientific process corrects for such mistakes over time, but scientists have quicker methods at their disposal to minimize potential observer bias. Animal behavior scientists haven't always used these methods—but that's changing. A new study confirms that, over the past decade, studies increasingly adhere to the rigorous best practices that can minimize potential biases in animal behavior research.Biases and self-fulfilling prophecies A German horse named Clever Hans is widely known in the history of animal behavior as a classic example of unconscious bias leading to a false result. Around the turn of the 20th century, Clever Hans was purported to be able to do math. For example, in response to his owner's prompt "3 + 5," Clever Hans would tap his hoof eight times. His owner would then reward him with his favorite vegetables. Initial observers reported that the horse's abilities were legitimate and that his owner was not being deceptive. However, careful analysis by a young scientist named Oskar Pfungst revealed that if the horse could not see his owner, he couldn't answer correctly. So while Clever Hans was not good at math, he was incredibly good at observing his owner's subtle and unconscious cues that gave the math answers away. In the 1960s, researchers asked human study participants to code the learning ability of rats. Participants were told their rats had been artificially selected over many generations to be either "bright" or "dull" learners. Over several weeks, the participants ran their rats through eight different learning experiments. In seven out of the eight experiments, the human participants ranked the "bright" rats as being better learners than the "dull" rats when, in reality, the researchers had randomly picked rats from their breeding colony. Bias led the human participants to see what they thought they should see. https://phys.org/news/2024-05-animal-behavior-bias-room.html

PARIS -- France would welcome China's electric vehicle giant BYD if the company should it decide wanted to open a factory in the country, Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said. "France welcomes all industrial projects. BYD and the Chinese auto industry are very welcome in France," Le Maire said at a meeting with car sector executives on Monday. Le Maire mentioned Toyota's French factory as an example of how France welcomes foreign investment. He spoke as China's President Xi Jinping was on a rare state visit in Paris. Xi was in Europe for the first time in five years, at a time of growing business tensions and fears that China could flood Europe with cheap Chinese EVs. BYD's first passenger car plant in Europe is scheduled to start production in Hungary at the beginning of 2026. The factory will have an initial annual capacity of 150,000 cars that could be expanded to 300,000. China's automakers are looking to boost production in Europe as the European Union considers raising the current 10 percent import tariff on Chinese vehicle imports to a punitive level. The EU has launched an investigation into subsidies for Chinese EVs that could see new tariffs introduced by July. Chery Auto plans to start building cars from its Omoda brand at Nissan's former factory in Barcelona this year. Leapmotor, which is 21 percent owned by Stellantis, is looking at options to build its cars in one of Stellantis's European plants. https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/france-would-allow-chinas-byd-build-cars-country#/

An emotional Kyren Wilson claimed his first world title with a nervy 18-14 victory over Jak Jones at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. The 32-year-old led 15-10 heading into Monday's concluding session and moved to the brink of victory at 17-11. But Welsh qualifier Jones - who had been 7-0 down - tenaciously reeled off three consecutive frames, before a pumped up Wilson shouted out and burst into tears as he sealed his victory. "I would like to say sorry to Jak for that outburst but it does mean so much to us all. My mum and dad have remortgaged and sacrificed their whole lives to get me here," Wilson said on BBC Two. "My brother has and my wife. The list goes on and on because it is a massive team effort." Tearful Wilson wins World Snooker Championship - reaction The Englishman came into the tournament under the radar after an underwhelming campaign, during which he has dealt with challenging family issues away from the table. However, he proved a deserved winner of the £500,000 top prize after producing arguably the best snooker of his career over the 17-day event. It also provided him with a moment of redemption in what is regarded as the sport’s ultimate test, after his 18-8 defeat by Ronnie O'Sullivan in his only previous World Championship final in 2020. While there was no fairytale conclusion for Jones, the quiet Welshman - who came into the tournament as a 200-1 outsider - has won plenty of admirers for his superb matchplay and wonderful temperament. And there will also be a place for him alongside the game’s elite when the rankings are revised this month, with Jones climbing from 44th to 14th in the world as a result of his stunning journey to the final - which saw him come through two qualification matches and spend 22 hours longer in action than his opponent. It is a moment that has long been in the making for Wilson, who first competed against Jones at Q School in 2011. Their paths have diverged significantly since then, with Jones falling off the professional tour twice and Wilson going on to win six ranking events. However, he had, until now, been unable to get over the line in one of the Triple Crown events, losing to Mark Allen in the final of the 2018 Masters and electing to reconstruct parts of his game after his defeat by O’Sullivan four years ago. Wilson now climbs nine places to end the campaign third in the world rankings, behind new number one Allen and Judd Trump. Having constructed a commanding 7-0 lead on day one to generate a scoreline last seen when John Parrott took the first seven frames against Jimmy White in 1991, he has rarely looked back. And he has enjoyed a happy knack of collecting potentially pivotal frames, escaping at 11-6 up rather than 10-7 on Sunday evening - helped by a 14th frame dramatically decided on the black, and then winning the 25th frame on Monday afternoon. Had it not been for those, and an outrageous fluke after Jones had forced a respotted black in the 28th frame, the outcome may have been entirely different, with the man competing in his first ever ranking final suddenly appearing the more assured. https://www.bbc.com/sport/snooker/articles/cg3lpy4drlqo

Notable health benefits and drawbacks associated with consuming desi khand, mishri, bura, cheeni, or gud “Desi khand, bura and gud offer small amounts of minerals and have a lower glycemic index (which is still significant) than refined sugar,” she says.Understanding the differences between these sweeteners can help you make healthier choices in your diet while still enjoying that satisfying sweetness. At first glance, these sweeteners might seem similar, but they each have unique characteristics. Consultant dietician and diabetes educator Kanikka Malhotra says, “Even though gud, desi khand, and bura have a lower glycemic index (GI), they still contain significant amounts of sugar. Overconsumption can lead to weight gain and associated health problems, and displacement of nutrient-rich foods.”Mishri and cheeni, she says, provide no benefits beyond sweetness. “They have a high glycemic index, no nutritional value, and are linked to metabolic diseases when consumed excessively.”Malhotra agrees that these sweeteners can impact blood sugar levels and insulin response for those who consume them. “The glycemic index ranks foods based on how quickly they raise blood sugar levels compared to pure glucose. High GI foods (above 70) cause fast, sharp spikes in blood sugar, moderate GI foods (56-69) have a less drastic effect and low GI foods (below 55) result in a slower, more gradual rise in blood sugar levels,” she informs. Mishri and cheeni, as stated previously, have a high GI (around 70 or above), gud has a moderate GI (around 65), and Desi khand as well as bura have a lower GI (around 55-60). High GI foods cause the pancreas to secrete a large burst of insulin to manage the rapid influx of sugar. This can lead to crashes (“lows”) and subsequent cravings as blood sugar drops too quickly. “Whereas, lower GI foods produce a more gradual insulin release, promoting better blood sugar stability,” she adds. Guidance on incorporating these sweeteners into a balanced diet “The key is moderation. Prioritise whole foods like fruits and vegetables for natural sweetness,” Malhotra asserts. Individuals with diabetes need extra vigilance. Consult with your dietitian, to personalise your sweetener intake, considering your overall diet, blood sugar management plan, and medication. “If you choose to use these sweeteners, opt for gud, desi khand, or bura for some trace minerals. Choose minimal amounts, and consider pairing them with protein, fibre, and healthy fats to slow down their absorption,” she recommends. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/food-wine/sweet-traditional-sweetener-sugar-india-9305292/

An American news website has alleged that the United States has put a stop to the shipment of arms to Israel, raising questions about the dynamics of this crucial alliance. The news website reported that American authorities intervened to halt the delivery of weapons destined for Israel, citing sources within the Israeli government. This move, reportedly implemented last week, marks a significant shift in US policy towards Israel. While the White House has remained silent on the matter, Israeli officials have refuted these claims, asserting that American aid continues as usual. This conflicting narrative underscores the complexity of international relations and the delicate balance of power in the Middle East. According to the American news outlet, this suspension of arms supply is unprecedented since October 7th, signaling a potential strain in the traditionally strong US-Israel relationship. This comes in contrast to the recent approval by the US House of Representatives for emergency aid to Israel amounting to $26 billion, including $14 billion in military assistance, as reported by Israeli media. In the aftermath of the Gaza conflict, American support to Israel has seen a surge, both in financial aid and military assistance, reflecting the evolving geopolitical landscape in the region. https://mashriqtv.pk/en/2024/05/06/us-halts-arms-supply-to-israel-american-news-website-claims/

A Nobel Prize-winning economist who advised Jeremy Corbyn is urging Sir Keir Starmer to ramp up public borrowing and turbocharge investment. Joseph Stiglitz, an economic guru of the political left, is calling on Labour to be more radical after “underpromising” in the run-up to the general election. The former World Bank chief economist told The Telegraph: “I think Labour needs a more aggressive public investment agenda. It is the same problem that we have had in the United States with under-investment in infrastructure.” It comes after Labour earlier this year dropped its £28bn green investment pledge, blaming high interest rates and the Government’s bid to “max out the credit card”. Sir Keir’s Opposition instead unveiled revised plans to spend under £5bn a year on environmental projects during its first Parliamentary term if elected, as the polls widely suggest. This has led to a warning by Mr Stiglitz, who also formerly advised former US presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, that Britain risks “being left behind” if it fails to embrace net zero.He said: “Biden said he was going to be spending something like $350bn (£277bn) on the green transition. The current estimates are over $1tn. That is the competitive landscape that Britain has to realise it is facing. “If Britain does not go for the green transition, it is going to make life more expensive and leave the UK behind.” The former Corbyn advisor also blamed the Government for fuelling the rise in long-term sickness in the UK since Covid, which has sparked a worklessness crisis. The number of people forced out of work from ill health has soared by 600,000 to a record 2.8 million since 2020, driven largely by a rise in mental health issues. Mr Stiglitz said: “What the Conservatives have done to the NHS in the last 14 years has really contributed to the problem. “If you have any kind of health problem and you don’t get treated when it is serious enough, it is very hard to work. Being out of work, ironically, is caused by underinvestment in healthcare.” People who struggle to access treatment then become anxious about their health and the impact on their income, in what becomes a “vicious cycle”, he said. Mr Stiglitz added: “Then you have mental health problems and that makes it very difficult to get back into the workplace.”The Government has sought to stem the rise in benefit payments by tightening the criteria for people who say they are too mentally unwell to work. Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride recently warned that “mental health culture” has gone too far, while Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has spoken of the danger of “over-medicalising” normal worries. However, Mr Stiglitz said it was “cruel” to “deny the reality” of issues like depression and anxiety. Mr Stiglitz, who won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2001, also criticised neoliberalism, which is typically used to describe policies that deregulate markets, lower trade barriers and shrink the size of the state. He said: “Markets are very good at creating crises and problems, but often they can’t solve the problems they’ve created. “The way our market system has functioned has put a lot of stress on a lot of people and is a source of problems that undermines productivity. “If you have an economic system where the rungs of the ladder are far apart, if you’re anywhere other than the very bottom, you worry more about falling down that ladder. That actually impairs your ability to move up the ladder.” People on the brink of poverty focus so much on survival that it impedes innovation and risk-taking, he said. Mr Stiglitz also called for billionaires like Elon Musk to be taxed more, saying that the Tesla tycoon was a “not self-made” man. He said: “Tesla received half a billion dollars from the US government at a critical moment. Elon Musk forgot about that and thinks he is a self-made man. He would not be where he is without that money. He now works very hard to forget that.” https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2024/05/05/corbyn-economics-guru-urges-starmer-borrow-spend-more/

The Veloce's turbocharged 2.0-liter is the only ding against an otherwise excellent luxury sports sedan. The engine feels unremarkable, burdened by a tinge too much low-end lag. Even when you tick the drive mode selector over to D for Dynamic, the sharper tuning doesn't make the mill feel any more playful. There's a reason so many enthusiasts fawn over the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. That car was basically developed by Maranello's top engineers after a series of long espresso breaks. It has a Ferrari-derived V-6 engine, suspension components modeled after the 488 Pista, and a myriad of aluminum components that translate to a truly epic driving experience. But if you take away the V-6, is the Giulia any good? The short answer is 'yes.' Even the base Giulia with a four-cylinder engine is charming. The Veloce model tested here has nearly as much personality as the hot-pot Quadrifoglio, but begs a far more reasonable $51,035 asking price. With 280 horsepower and 306 pound-feet compared to the Quad's 505 horses, there is a serious gulf in power. But that's still enough to move the Giulia out of its own way and on to 60 miles per hour in 5.5 seconds. And you even get a soundtrack of some light turbo whooshing during hard throttle applications. The standard eight-speed automatic transmission is pretty anonymous, too. Now the good stuff. The suspension and steering are *Italian hands motion.* The steering is quick and responsive, telling you exactly where the car's nose is pointed. The Alfa has a tight 11.8:1 steering ratio compared to the BMW 330i's 14.1:1. On this Veloce model, you get a limited-slip differential and stickier summer tires, which help the already dynamic chassis feel more lively.A near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution on this Veloce model yields incredible balance and it comes with standard rear-wheel drive (although, all-wheel drive is available as an option). The suspension has excellent damping and a decent rebound curve that keeps the car flat in corners, but still playful. And the Giulia is lighter than the comparable Audi or BMW thanks to the aluminum body panels that trickle down from the Quad. But the ride is harsher than the 3 Series or Audi A4. Even on long, smooth stretches of highway I could feel the slightest imperfections bumping underneath. The 19-inch wheels and low-profile rubber on this Veloce model probably don't help. https://www.motor1.com/reviews/717630/2024-alfa-romeo-giulia-veloce-review/

Vitality County Championship, Division Two, Lord's (day three) Leicestershire 306: Handscomb 109, Scriven 46, Ahmed 42; Bamber 4-68 Middlesex 407-8: Robson 162, du Plooy 131; Currie 2-66, Green 2-81 Middlesex (7 pts) lead Leicestershire (4 pts) by 101 with 2 wickets standing Match scorecard Sam Robson and Leus du Plooy shared a Middlesex record third-wicket stand against Leicestershire of 252 to put the home side in control of their County Championship clash at Lord's. Robson marked his return from a thumb injury by top-scoring with 162, while du Plooy struck 131 from 191 balls - his second century since moving from Derbyshire over the winter - to help the host reach 407-8. That amounted to a first-innings lead of 101, with a quartet of bowlers - Ben Mike, Scott Currie, Ben Green and Rehan Ahmed - all picking up two wickets for the Foxes. However, with the first day washed out entirely and a gloomy weather forecast for Monday, a draw looks the most probable outcome in this Division Two game. With one wicket falling on the previous evening, Leicestershire doubled that tally in the first over of the day as Max Holden drove outside off stump at Currie and was taken low at slip without increasing his overnight score of 26. However, that proved to be the visitors' solitary success of the morning session as Robson and du Plooy accumulated runs steadily. Middlesex upped the tempo after lunch and Robson won the race with his partner to three figures, driving Scriven through midwicket for three. Scriven, who got the ball to swing from the Nursery End, was unlucky to remain wicketless - persuading du Plooy to edge to Peter Handscomb at leg slip but the ex-Middlesex skipper was unable to hang on. Still 16 short of his hundred at the time, Du Plooy took advantage of that let-off to complete a ton and the second new ball actually proved fruitful for the batters, who soon accelerated beyond Leicestershire's total of 306. However, the Foxes bowlers made inroads during the final session. Du Plooy feathered one behind and Ryan Higgins was bowled swinging at Green, who ended Robson's six-hour stay at the crease. Nathan Fernandes made a pugnacious 25-ball 31 and Toby Roland-Jones also perished in pursuit of quick runs prior to bad light intervening. https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/articles/c72p533586po

Skincare trends on Instagram are a dime a dozen, and the latest to hit the block encourages you to eat and drink your skincare. Simply put, the trend has influencers and beauty gurus talking about incorporating a nutritionally rich diet in a quest for healthy skin. Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, says that eating right ensures the nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and proteins support and improve collagen production. It increases tissue strength and fortifies the cell membranes besides protecting the skin from stressors such as UV exposure and environmental pollutants. “It also keeps the microbiome environment balanced and healthy in our gut. A happy gut translates to healthy skin. Our diet habits influence our appearance and ageing, and thus including an adequate amount of fruits and vegetables in one’s diet as per their age and gender is the way to go,” she adds.According to her, foods rich in vitamin A and E improve immunity and repair cell damage, and citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons, amla and grapefruit are rich in antioxidants. Carrots are excellent sources of beta carotene, which mimic the effects of retinol, while tomatoes carry lycopene that protect the skin from UV damage. “Remember to stay hydrated by drinking sufficient water and avoid alcohol as it dehydrates the skin and leads to redness and inflammation”, says Dr G. Sushma, clinical dietician, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills Hyderabad. From nourish bowls to pressed green juices, hashtag #eatyourskincare is filled with healthy recipes to get you on the right track. “Dry fruits and nuts such as almonds, walnuts, and raisins have essential fatty acids that provide micronutrients which keep the skin hydrated and elastic,” says Dr Ajay Rana, dermatologist, Cosmetic Club.Digital creator Tammy Weatherhead’s ‘Glowy Skin Detox Juice’ is her go to way of reviving her skin “back to glow status”. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/eating-skincare-drinking-healthy-skin-beauty-9305861/

Braverman told to 'grab the shovel' and help Sunak dig out hole Suella Braverman wrote in the Daily Telegraph about her party that "the hole to dig us out is the PM’s, and it’s time for him to start shovelling". She also called for the party to take a stance further to the right of where it is now. Tobias Ellwood - a Tory MP who is much more on the One Nation side of the party - has now called for her to get on board with the PM and help his election efforts. Speaking to Sky News, Mr Ellwood says: "Why not be part of the efforts Suella Braverman? "Why not be part of the team with the prime minister that grabs the shovels as well, rather than simply commentating from the sidelines. "Let's be bit more JFK about this - you know, every one of us, as the election approaches, especially parliamentarians, should be asking ourselves, do our actions, do our comments, help demonstrate unity or distract from that core message? "Did they help win back the middle ground that's vital for electoral success - or do they push to the extreme? "Do they help retain Conservative seats, or do they help lose them? "That's the big test that we now face with just months away from the next general election."Swinney warns against rivals entering SNP leadership race By Jennifer Scott, political reporter SNP leadership hopeful John Swinney has warned rivals against entering the contest, saying it would "delay the ability for the [party] to start its rebuilding". The former deputy leader is currently the only candidate in the running to replace Humza Yousaf, who announced last week he would be stepping down as first minister after his decision to end a power-sharing agreement with the Scottish Green Party led to the collapse of his premiership. But rumours have surfaced today that SNP activist Graeme McCormick has gathered enough support to launch his own bid for the top job, and if he submits an application before Monday's midday deadline, the party would begin a three-week leadership contest. Speaking to Sky News' Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips, Mr Swinney accepted there was a "democratic process" for any candidate with 100 signatures from 20 local SNP organisations to enter the race. However, in what appeared to be a warning to any potential rival, he added: "My bid to become SNP leader has received very, very comprehensive support within the SNP. I have sent out a message which is about unifying the SNP to strengthen our party and win Scottish independence. "I think that is necessary as the SNP is not as cohesive today as the party needs to be, and my campaign has attracted very wide support."Galloway hangs up after being challenged on views on gay relationships George Galloway, the leader of the Workers Party of Britain and Rochdale MP, ended an interview with LBC this morning when asked about comments he previously made about gay relationships. Speaking to Novara Media previously, Mr Galloway said: "I don't want my children prematurely sexualised at all, I don't want them taught that some things are normal when their parents don't believe that they're normal. "Now there's lots of things not normal, doesn't mean you have to hate something that isn't normal. But if my children are taught that there's – whatever the current vogue number is – 76 or 97 or whatever the number of purported genders that exist, I don't want my children taught that." He added that he did not want children to be taught "that gay relationships are exactly the same and as normal as a mum, a dad and kids". "I want my children to be taught that the normal thing in Britain, in society across the world, is a mother, a father and a family. "I want them to be taught that there are gay people in the world and that they must be treated with respect and affection, as I treat my own gay friends and colleagues with respect and affection but I don't want my children to be taught that these things are equal because I don't believe them to be equal." Asked about the comments by LBC, Mr Galloway claimed the station was "ambushing" him - and that they had shown a "clip of a clip" that was "edited". On its website, LBC said: "The clip played was shortened, though a longer clip was then played."Steel giant ArcelorMittal warns Gove over Kent planning verdict Exclusive by Mark Kleinman, City editor The world's second-largest steel company has warned the government that a planning verdict due this week could lead to a key division quitting the UK. Sky News has seen a letter sent by ArcelorMittal to Michael Gove, the levelling-up secretary, in which it says that a decision to allow the closure and redevelopment of part of Chatham Docks would have "seismic adverse consequences… [for] the British economy and multiple strategic industries". In the letter from Matthew Brooks, who runs ArcelorMittal's construction solutions arm in the UK, the company urges Mr Gove to issue an urgent order to allow fuller government scrutiny of the redevelopment proposals ahead of Wednesday's decision by Medway Council. "This is highly time-sensitive - calling in the application after next Wednesday will not be possible," Mr Brooks wrote. He warned that if the proposals were approved, ArcelorMittal would "regrettably be left with no alternative but to leave Chatham Docks and, more than likely, cease operations in Britain, given the lack of suitable alternative sites". https://news.sky.com/story/vote-2024-local-election-results-sunak-starmer-davey-tories-labour-lib-dems-blackpool-south-by-election-12593360
