  1. TOKYO – Honda is revising its approach to next-generation electric vehicles and will pursue a vertically integrated approach that brings everything from batteries and software to vehicle production in-house, as the company races to rein in costs as it wrestles with new technologies. The shift to a more vertical supply chain is driving Honda’s R&D spending to record levels. Honda, Japan’s second-largest automaker, needs to adopt this approach to better compete, CEO Toshihiro Mibe said Friday while announcing financial results. Honda’s push was on full display last month, when it announced it would invest $11 billion in battery and EV production in Canada. “We changed our strategy a little bit in terms of electrification, especially batteries,” Mibe said. “We are shifting to a vertical-type system to sustain a total electrification business. To do that, we must internalize these technologies. The software too must also be supported by Honda itself.” Mibe said Honda would give more details of the strategy on Thursday in an annual business update. The strategy is a throwback to the earliest days of the auto industry when Ford Motor Co. tried to make everything from rubber to glass under its own umbrella. The approach is seeing a resurgence with its adaption to EVs by emerging players from China such as the EV heavyweight BYD. BYD has been able to control cost and technology by organizing its own supply chain vertically. In Europe, Renault Group, Volvo and Stellantis are among the automakers that have brought production of electric motors and batteries in-house. https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/honda-seeks-vertically-integrate-ev-value-chain
  2. Amazon Prime Video isn’t waiting for the start of next week’s “upfront” to draw attention to women’s sports. The streaming giant said it has struck a sponsorship deal with AT&T that will have the telecommunications perennial serve as the lead sponsor for 21 WNBA games shown on Prime Video, and the presenting sponsor of the halftime show that airs during the service’s National Women’s Soccer League matches. When Caitlin Clark’s home WNBA debut streams on May 16, Prime Video’s first regular-season game, AT&T will be the presenting sponsor of the pre-show, post-show and halftime coverage. Viewers will see the company’s logo during the basketball games, which will also have a “presenting” intro.“We are able to extend our commitment to women’s sports by teaming up with brands like AT&T that support meaningful storytelling around female athletes that connects to scaled audiences,” said Danielle Carney, head of live sports and video sales for Amazon Ads. “Amazon is proud to help those brands continue their impactful role in our culture, and guide new brands into the rise of women’s sports.”With notable recent surges in viewership for WNBA games and women’s college basketball, Madison Avenue’s attention in sports with female competitors is increasing. Thanks to streaming, advertisers have fewer linear TV programs that draw the massive simultaneous audiences of the past. But live sports continue to prove durable, which has sparked interest in leagues and games that traditionally did not get as much attention.GroupM, the large media-investment group that is part of WPP, has vowed to double the amount of money its clients spend on women’s sports in 2024 and said in March that it would seek to create a dedicated marketplace for the programming genre in the upfront. In that ad-sales marketplace, U.S. TV companies try to sell the bulk of their commercial inventory for their next cycle of new programming. Amazon Prime Video has in recent months snatched up rights to women’s sports. In November, the company struck a pact with NWSL to stream 27 matches each season for a multi-year term. In April, Prime Video and the WNBA agreed to a two-year extension of their current rights contract AT&T has more than doubled its media investment in women’s sports since 2022, and has supported the LPGA and the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team in the past. The marketer believes the fan base is growing and has research showing that audiences for women’s sports are twice as likely to recall advertisers who sponsor games. https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/att-amazon-prime-video-womens-sports-advertising-wnba-nwsl-1235998682/
  3. The quest for sustained focus at work often leads individuals down various paths, each offering promises of enhanced efficiency and goal attainment. One such path, championed by content creator Ali Abdaal, shines a spotlight on a technique he dubs “intensity sprints.” Departing from the conventional wisdom of consistent, steady work, intensity sprints advocate for short bursts of focused activity. Abdaal, a former NHS (National Health Service) doctor, says, “There’s all this stuff about how consistency is really the most important thing and how a small amount of consistent, focused work every day will help you get to your goals. But often it can be really hard to just do the same thing for a very long period of time.He continues, “So, setting aside two or three or 4 hours, taking myself to a coffee shop, leaving my phone behind, crucially, and just having my laptop, and in that three or four hour block of time, just making as much progress as I can and kind of turning it into a bit of a game, having some music, getting myself a coffee. “And I found that when I was writing my own book, it was those bursts of intensity in which I made the most progress, rather than slow and stable consistency over time.”Organisational psychologist and HR consultant at That Culture Thing, Gurleen Baruah, agrees, “Intensity sprints are one of the very effective strategies to beat procrastination, analysis paralysis, and really get things done.” Here are the psychological mechanisms at play when intensity sprints are applied to achieve high levels of focus and productivity:*Intensity sprinting is basically time blocking in your calendar and removing all distractions from around you, including putting away the phone. This also includes setting an alarm for say 2 or 3 hours depending on the task at hand and really diving deep into the work. Psychologically, it makes the mind focused on the task at hand with intense deep work. When people are in flow and in the moment without distractions, the brain works much faster and more effectively. *Secondly, in order to get into the flow state (as suggested by Professor Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in his groundbreaking book ‘Flow’), it takes time to get into it. And if there are distractions, the mind wanders, and when you get back to the task, it will again take you time to get into the deep zone, hence your value on time gets reduced. Intensity sprints, therefore, come to your rescue where you intentionally design time blocks so that you don’t get distracted. You do this by blocking time on your calendar, keeping the phone away, having a ‘do not disturb’ post-it note on your desk, or even using headphones with instrumental music. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/workplace/intensity-sprints-work-workplace-job-productivity-ali-abdaal-9309062/
  4. The UN general assembly has voted overwhelmingly to back the Palestinian bid for full UN membership, in a move that signalled Israel’s growing isolation on the world stage amid global alarm over the war in Gaza and the extent of the humanitarian crisis in the strip. The assembly voted by 143 to nine, with 25 abstentions, for a resolution called on the UN security council to bestow full membership to the state of Palestine, while enhancing its current mission with a range of new rights and privileges, in addition to what it is allowed in its current observer status. The highly charged gesture drew an immediate rebuke from Israel. Its envoy to the UN, Gilad Erdan, delivered a fiery denunciation of the resolution and its backers before the vote. “Today, I will hold up a mirror for you,” Erdan said, taking out the small paper shredder in which he shredding a small copy of the cover of the UN charter. He told the assembly: “You are shredding the UN charter with your own hands. Yes, yes, that’s what you’re doing. Shredding the UN charter. Shame on you.” The Palestinian envoy, Riyad Mansour, pointed out the vote was being held at a time when Rafah, the southernmost town that is last haven for many Gazans, faced attack from Israeli forces. “As we speak, 1.4 million Palestinians in Rafah wonder if they will survive the day and wonder where to go next. There is nowhere left to go,” Mansour said. “I have stood hundreds of times before at this podium, often in tragic circumstances, but none comparable to the ones my people endured today … never for a more significant vote than the one about to take place, a historic one.” Friday’s resolution was carefully tailored over the past few days, diluting its language so as not to trigger a cut-off of US funding under a 1990 law. It does not make Palestine a full member, or give it voting rights in the assembly, or the right to stand for membership of the security council, but the vote was a resounding expression of world opinion in favour of Palestinian statehood, galvanised by the continuing bloodshed and famine caused by Israel’s war in Gaza. Even before the vote in the assembly on Friday morning, Israel and a group of leading Republicans urged US funding be cut anyway because of the new privileges the resolution granted to the Palestinian mission. The US mission to the UN, which voted against the resolution, warned that it would also use its veto again if the question of Palestinian membership returned to the security council for another vote. “Efforts to advance this resolution do not change the reality that the Palestinian Authority does not currently meet the criteria for UN membership under the UN charter,” the mission’s spokesperson, Nathan Evans, said. “Additionally, the draft resolution does not alter the status of the Palestinians as a “non-member state observer mission”. The other nations which voted against the resolution were Argentina, Czechia, Hungary, Israel, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Papua New Guinea. The UK abstained. According to the resolution, the Palestinian mission will now have to right to sit in the general assembly among other states in alphabetical order, rather than in its current observer seat at the back of the chamber. Palestinian diplomats will have the right to introduce proposals and amendments, they can be elected to official posts in the full chamber and on committees, and will have the right to speak on Middle Eastern matters, as well as the right to make statements on behalf of groups of nations in the assembly. But the resolution also makes plain that “the state of Palestine, in its capacity as an observer state, does not have the right to vote in the general assembly or to put forward its candidature to United Nations organs.” Richard Gowan, the UN director at the International Crisis Group, said: “In essence, it gives the Palestinians the airs and graces of a UN member, but without the fundamental attributes of a real member, which are voting power and the right to run for the security council.” The general assembly resolution was crafted to fall short of the benchmark set in a 1990 US law that bans funding of the UN or any UN agency “which accords the Palestine Liberation Organization the same standing as member states”. The main faction in the PLO, Fatah, now controls the Palestinian Authority, which the Biden administration is backing to take up governing Gaza after the war is over. Despite the wording in the resolution making clear Palestine would not have a vote, Israel called on the US to cut funding for the UN because of the resolution, and a group of Republican senators announced they were introducing legislation to do that. “The US should not lend credibility to an organization that actively promotes and rewards terrorism. By granting any sort of status at the UN to the Palestine Liberation Organization, we would be doing just that,” Senator Mitt Romney said in a written statement. “Our legislation would cut off US taxpayer funding to the UN if it gives additional rights and privileges to the Palestinian Authority and the PLO.” On Thursday night, Israel’s security cabinet approved a “measured expansion” of Israeli forces’ operation in Rafah, following the stalling of ceasefire talks in Cairo. The US adamantly opposes the Rafah offensive, and has paused the delivery of a consignment of US bombs, and Joe Biden has threatened further restrictions on arms supplies if Israel presses ahead with the attack. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, vowed to defy US objections, saying that Israel would fight on “with its fingernails” if necessary. On Monday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) took control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, after ordering civilians in the east of Rafah city to evacuate. Since then more than 110,000 people have fled the area. On Friday, the UN reported intense clashes between the IDF and Palestinian militants on the eastern outskirts of the city. The fighting has cut off aid supplies into Gaza, at a time of spreading famine. https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/may/10/un-support-palestine-membership

COMING UP: The Bank of England is set to keep rates on hold, as is Poland’s central bank. Mixed Messages A growing number of countries are complaining that China produces too much cheap stuff in its powerhouse factories, and should do something about it soon. They’d better not hold their breath.European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen was the latest to air the grievance, which she shared this week with visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping. But just a few days earlier, China’s economic planning agency had released a detailed rebuttal of claims about “overcapacity,” arguing that Chinese electric cars and solar panels are cheap because their producers are efficient, not because they’re subsidized. That’s become Beijing’s standard response when its high-tech industries are criticized. Given their crucial role in supporting economic growth — households at home are tightening their belts after a housing slump, and will likely offer limited help toward meeting this year’s 5% target — Beijing is not inclined to change course. In fact, it’s not just in these cutting-edge industries that China is getting slammed for having too much capacity, and it’s not just advanced economies that are doing the slamming. Emerging nations from Brazil to Turkey have protested about floods of cheap steel, for example. Read More: China Moves to Cool Battery Boom Amid Overcapacity Concerns Those problems often arise as a result of the housing slump weighing down China’s domestic economy. Put simply, all kinds of materials and machines that might once have been used for construction at home are now getting diverted to overseas markets. There’s no quick fix for this, because balance will only be restored when China can stabilize its housing market — which it’s struggled to do — and reorient its policies so that consumers play a bigger role in driving growth. Read More: Suspicions of Fake China Cooking Oil Alarm US Biofuel Industry The latter is a big ask, as even some of China’s vocal capacity critics admit. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen did more than anyone to put the issue on global agendas during her visit to China last month. But during one stop, she acknowledged that it would require Chinese leaders reviewing “their entire macroeconomic and industrial strategy,” and concluded: “It’s not going to be solved in an afternoon or a month.” The Best of Bloomberg Economics Boston Fed President Susan Collins signaled rates will likely need to be held at a two-decade high for longer than previously thought. Brazil’s central bank cut its interest rate by a quarter-point, slowing its easing pace in a split vote that exposed rifts between members nominated by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and more hawkish directors. Japan’s latest wage figures showed pay gains have now lagged inflation every month for two years even as a measure of the deeper trend points to steady growth. Turkey’s central bank raised its year-end inflation forecast, a surprise move that underscores the challenge it faces in slowing price growth from its current level of almost 70%. Malaysia kept its benchmark interest unchanged, saving its policy ammunition for later amid looming risks to inflation and ongoing measures to defend the ringgit. In Indonesia, there are signs the private sector is increasingly concerned about the government’s trade policy. The Philippine economy sustained its momentum in the first quarter, keeping it among the region’s fastest-growing although strains are showing from high borrowing costs and persistent inflation. Need-to-Know Research Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell might have taken interest-rate hikes off the table, and the European Central Bank seems poised to cut rates next month. 8. An animal charity is issuing an urgent appeal for more funding to help it survive a cash-flow issue. Ferne Animal Sanctuary near Chard said it needs £100,000 to get through the next four months due to rising costs. This comes just days after it rescued three cats found in a sealed cardboard box. "We're moving Heaven and Earth to get us through this," the charity's CEO Kevan Hodges said. In the longer term the centre is opening more charity shops to raise funds. The rescue centre shelters about 300 animals at any time. Nikki Haddock, animal care manager at Ferne, said: "Not all our animals are rehomed, some stay with us for their entire life. "We are seeing more dogs come in with behavioural issues and medical issues that have gone untreated for a long time. None of it is cheap. "Our vet treatments bill per year are around £80,000-£100,000." She said the most recent cats found in a cardboard box were doing well - but one of them was pregnant. Mr Hodges said costs for veterenary bills and food were going up, and the charity was struggling to keep up. "We are in a classic situation where cash is king," he told BBC Radio Somerset. "We need this appeal to be successful over the next few months. "Because of a huge increase in costs over the last 24 months we're in this position now." He said they were in the process of opening more charity shops, but in the meantime, they were relying on the appeal to be successful. "I'm extremely positive that we are going to get through it," Mr Hodges added. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cv2xqljv85zo
  9. BYD plans to sell plug-in hybrid cars in Europe closer to the prices of their pure combustion-engine rivals rather than full-electric vehicles, a top executive from the automaker said. BYD has so far focused on sales of battery-electric vehicles in Europe, but later this year the automaker will launch the Seal U DM-i midsize SUV plug-in hybrid as it seeks to take advantage of growing demand for PHEVs. The company will follow that with another PHEV next year, Michael Shu, managing director for BYD Europe, said at the Financial Times Future of the Car Summit on Thursday. BYD said in December that it will open its first European passenger car factory in Szeged, Hungary. The company said the plant will build full-electric cars and plug-in hybrids for the European market. BYD will start operations at its Hungary plant "before 2026," Shu told Automotive News Europe in March, without giving a precise date.Chinese brands are weighing production in Europe, in part to defuse tensions over an EU probe into Beijing’s support for the EV value chain in China. In December, France pulled EV subsidies for cars built in China; sales of models such as the MG4 and Dacia Spring have fallen sharply this year. The EU has said that it could impose punitive sanctions on Chinese-built cars if it finds evidence of unfair competition, although German automakers have opposed that, warning of a dangerous trade war. BYD is aiming for a market share of 5 percent of EV sales in Europe before starting production at the Hungary plant, Shu told Automotive News Europe in March. Last year BYD sold 15,644 cars in the region, all of which were full-electric cars, according to figures from market researchers Dataforce. First-quarter sales were 7,701, a 717 percent increase over last year, led by the Atto 3 compact SUV. The company’s share of the European car market was 0.46 percent for the quarter, making it the second-biggest Chinese brand in the region behind MG, owned by SAIC.Shu said BYD wanted to become a leading electric vehicle maker in Europe by 2030. "We are confident that we could be in a leading position (in Europe) by 2030," Shu said at the Financial Times conference. PHEV sales jump in Europe Plug-in hybrid sales in Europe grew 10 percent in the first quarter to 253,864, led by the Volvo XC60, Ford Kuga and Mercedes GLC. Plug-in hybrid sales are predominately driven by premium brands, which have turned to the technology to replace diesel for mainly larger cars. Plug-in hybrids and diesel drivetrains are a way of lowering fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. PHEV technology has come under fire from environmental groups, who say their real world emissions are higher than in tests. The European Commission’s first report based on in-car monitoring, released in March, found that CO2 emissions were 350 percent higher than test figures. The European Union will adjust the emissions test in 2025 to reduce the assumed electric-only distance driven, and could further reduce that in 2027 after analysing more recent real-world data. Automakers are fitting bigger batteries to newer models to keep the low CO2 figures for PHEVs under the new WLTP rules. BYD says that its Dual Mode, or DM, plug-in hybrids are used in full-electric mode 65 percent of the time, based on data from one million cars driven a total of 9.7 billion km (six billion miles). 50-50 split in China BYD sells only BEVs and plug-in hybrids in China after ending sales of pure ICE drivetrains last year. Sales were evenly split between the two technologies last year, BYD has said. The brand was largest seller in China in 2023, beating Volkswagen for the first time. Toyota is considering using BYD’s DM technology in its hybrid cars in China as part of an expanded relationship between the two companies, a report in the Beijing-based Caijing magazine said on Wednesday. BYD unveiled its first PHEV, the F3DM, at the 2008 Geneva auto show. The technology is now in its fifth generation, Shu said. BYD also considering overhauling the Seagull small EV to allow sales in Europe, Shu told the Financial TImes summit. The Seagull was launched at the Shanghai auto show last year and has since become a hit in China, with prices starting below 10,000 euros before taxes. “We have received a lot of requests [for the car] via our dealer partner from our customers,” Shu said. “But there is lot of engineering work we have to do.” BYD could also open a R&D center in Europe to complement the factory, Shu said. https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/byd-adds-phev-production-hungary-factory
  10. I was commentating on the Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Lucknow Super Giants game and it suddenly dawned on me that the way to play T20 cricket is transforming before our eyes in this IPL. The contrast between the two teams was stark. Lucknow fought their way to 165 on a pitch that looked slow, tacky and difficult to score freely on. KL Rahul adopted his usual safety-first approach and once they had reached only 27-2 in the powerplay, 165 was about as good a score as they could have hoped for. What then happened in the Sunrisers' run-chase was nothing short of astonishing! Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma played as if they had not been watching the first innings. There were no thoughts about the slowness of the pitch, they literally just tried to hit every ball for six and the end result was a score of 107 without loss after six overs, the second-highest powerplay score of all time in men's T20 cricket (behind their own record of a scarcely believable 125 vs Delhi Capitals last month). The difference between the two teams' powerplays ended up being a staggering 80 runs. Sunrisers ended up chasing down their target in less than 10 overs, with a shell-shocked Rahul effusive in his praise of the top-order 'Travishek' combo (you'll be hearing this term a lot more I think). The bottom line, however, is that it was Rahul himself who was mainly responsible for the annihilation suffered by his side. The Super Giants played an old-school brand of T20 where they assessed the pitch, kept wickets in hand in the middle overs and then attacked at the end to get up to what looked like a defendable score. Except it wasn't. Those tactics don't work against sides who have two confident openers willing to chance their arm and who don't care about getting out early. Head and Abhishek put the bowlers under intense pressure from ball one and got more bad balls as a result, as even good bowlers tend to wilt in that situation. https://www.skysports.com/cricket/news/12123/13132321/is-2024-indian-premier-league-changing-face-of-t20-cricket-as-sunrisers-hyderabad-fire-with-the-bat-once-more
  11. Not many can risk walking away from prospects of a lucrative career when they graduate at the top of their class from an institute like IIT-Kanpur. But that’s what 25-year-old Dhruv Mittal did — took a leap of faith to pursue his passion for drumming, that too, in the thick of the bleak Covid lockdown. Dhruv now juggles between teaching assistant roles at Hollywood’s reputed Musicians Institue (MI), where he graduated in September 2023, working as a sessions musician for recording and live shows and generally, living and breathing all things drums.Dhruv admits that his life came to a “full circle” when he recently played with santoor player Rahul Sharma, son of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, and tabla player Ojas Adhiya, for a corporate show in San Fransisco. “They needed someone to accompany them on the drums. Something led to the other and I got recommended by Gino Banks. I was very touched that he thought of me. They flew me in. It was my first time and we did not rehearse. They know each other’s playing inside out and they can anticipate…I was pretty much logged in with Ojas and Rahul and was just trying to watch out for visual cues and hung in there somehow. But it was a huge deal for me,” he says.Specialising in funk/jazz-fusion, Dhruv currently plays with guitarist Michael Sims, and other Los-Angeles-based musicians including singer Natasha Vora, guitarist Cesar Gandara and Atharva Phadke besides session work that he can lay his hands on. While the budding musician is roughing it out in Hollywood, (he shares a part of a living room of an apartment), Dhruv has nothing but gratitude. “The biggest perk is that I keep in good shape because I’m always playing drums every day and I actually get paid for it. So, you know, it’s a good job. Can’t complain,” he says.Self-taught until moving to the US to learn drumming at MI, Dhruv learned his chops from YouTube tutorials. Apart from playing the drums in band competitions in the IIT college festivals circuit, Dhruv’s exposure to “high-level” music came when he visited cities like Delhi and Mumbai. However, it was only after being introduced to drummer Jai Row Kavi (Blackstratblues, Sunidhi Chauhan, Amit Trivedi, among others) that the tempo of his music career picked pace. “I planned to study with Ja’ during the lockdown but that never happened because we could not find some common time and eventually I had to leave the country for the US. But I still consider him a mentor. He was helpful whenever I had questions relating to shifting over to music. I sent him a few messages and he was kind enough to reply. He said that if I could make it happen, I should try to get to MI. He also gave me a letter of recommendation,” says Dhruv. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/iit-kanpur-topper-drummer-hollywood-9318590/

Kate's family, particularly her parents Carole and Michael, were said to have been close to Tony Henman, the father of former British tennis number one Tim Henman, who reportedly died on Friday at the age of 84. Mr Henman and his wife Jane were guests at Prince William and Kate's wedding at Westminster Abbey back in 2011. The two couples had been seen together at Wimbledon over the years after the Middletons struck up a friendship with the former solicitor and his wife. In recent years when Kate has visited Wimbledon, Tim, who was a semi-finalist at the All-England club four times, was seen sitting with the princess. The Middletons, including Kate and her sister Pippa, are all known to be huge tennis fans and have all been regulars at SW19 over the years. But one year, Kate revealed she was left "mortified" after her dad Michael was involved in an embarrassing mix-up. Kate revealed the cringeworthy story in a 2017 BBC documentary called Our Wimbledon presented by sports host Sue Barker. She told Sue how her dad tried to play it cool in front of the former British number one tennis player Tim. Kate explained: "My father is not going to appreciate this, but we were walking past Tim Henman and we had just seen [Pete] Sampras play. My dad said very coolly: 'Hi Pete'. I was mortified!" The sad news comes as the prince, who holds the title of Duke of Cornwall, made a trip to Fistral Beach shortly after his estranged brother, Prince Harry, was in the UK for an appearance at St. Paul's Cathedral for his Invictus Games. https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/1187158-kate-middleton-receives-bad-news-while-prince-william-pays-visit-to-cornwall

  17. Top Stories The strong dollar is casting a shadow on the global trade recovery. Sweden cut its benchmark rate for the first time in eight years, while Brazil will likely slow the pace of monetary easing. Buy now, pay later platforms are making it tougher for economists to gauge the true state of health of America’s households. Read the BigTake. Rising Rents Surging rental costs across much of the developed world are causing pain for students, young workers and working families — and for the central bankers charged with delivering price stability for them. While the Federal Reserve and peers have managed to bring down goods inflation and have even taken the edge of services prices, rapidly rising housing costs — which have a hefty weighting in consumer price index baskets — are preventing inflation from declining closer to targeted levels. The upshot: The disinflation momentum seen through most of last year has all but stalled in some developed economies. That’s leading financial markets to either push back bets for interest-rate cuts, as seen in the US, or reinstate odds for further rate hikes, as is the case in Australia. Reserve Bank Governor Michele Bullock acknowledged the issue on Tuesday, saying strong immigration in recent years has “certainly added pressure on the housing market and that’s working its way out in rents.” The RBA, in its quarterly update of forecasts released the same day, said rent inflation is expected to “remain high” through at least mid-2026.Soaring rents are a major pain point for UK families as well and a key voter issue ahead of a general election expected later this year. Still, the Bank of England has other fish to fry. Governor Andrew Bailey and his colleagues have turned their focus on pay growth and services inflation, which remain too hot for comfort. If those metrics cool down, together with goods inflation already below 1%, they could counterbalance rising rent costs and bring inflation back to the 2% target. The UK central bank is widely expected by economists to keep rates at a 16-year high of 5.25% on Thursday, with investors watching for clues on whether policymakers see June or August as a window to begin cutting. As for the US, rent accounts for around one-third of the CPI inflation index, making it one of the biggest drivers of prices. Rents in most major US metropolitan areas have risen some 1.5 times faster than wages in the last four years, according to an analysis by Zillow Group Inc.And that could be about to get even worse. Household expectations about the change in the cost of rent have risen sharply from last year, with rental costs expected to increase by 1.5 percentage points to 9.7% for the next year, according to a survey by the New York Fed released Monday. The danger is that workers demand even fatter pay checks to deal with the cost-of-living squeeze, undermining the Fed’s inflation fight even further. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-05-08/world-economy-latest-rents-may-be-last-tamed-in-inflation-fight
  18. How do city residents feel about animals in their immediate surroundings? A recent study published in the Journal of Urban Ecology by the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the University of Jena and the Vienna University of Technology shows how different the acceptance of various wild animals in urban areas is.Important factors are the places where the animals are found and their level of po[CENSORED]rity—squirrels and ladybugs come out on top here. The results have important implications for urban planning and nature conservation. The relationship between city inhabitants and urban animals is complex, as the study shows. The researchers conducted a survey to find out how Munich residents rate 32 urban animal species and where in the city they would prefer to see them. In general, respondents liked most of the animals—23 of the 32 animal species received positive approval ratings. The majority of birds and mammals were very po[CENSORED]r. The respondents also rated arthropods, lizards and frogs positively. Exceptions were martens, rats, wasps, slugs and urban pigeons. Cockroaches were the least po[CENSORED]r. Respondents had a neutral attitude toward ants, spiders and snakes. Acceptance depends on the animal and its location According to the survey, all animals have a place in the city—except for the very few, very unpo[CENSORED]r species. In the survey, city residents were able to choose from various locations in different proximity to their homes as to where the animals should be found. In most cases, participants placed the animals in urban areas such as their neighborhood, city parks, in the city in general and in the surrounding countryside. In contrast, they rarely chose their immediate living environment, such as in the garden, on the balcony or in the apartment. Participants placed some animals, such as squirrels and ladybugs, in all or almost all locations. They placed many species in several locations, while three species were often not placed at all: Cockroaches, rats and slugs. "It turns out that city residents' preferences for locations clearly correlate with their attitudes towards animals," explains researcher Dr. Fabio Sweet. The animals that were generally more po[CENSORED]r were on average placed closer to home by the respondents. Planning cities for people and animals Prof. Wolfgang Weisser, head of the Chair of Terrestrial Ecology, emphasizes, "Increasing urbanization makes it necessary to actively care for animals in the city and to design urban development accordingly. If we know where people prefer or dislike certain animals, we can anticipate potential points of conflict. This allows us to identify places where species conservation in cities is accepted by people." The results show, for example, that human–wildlife conflicts are unlikely in city parks because the animals are accepted by most people there. Animals are also tolerated in the wider residential environment. Conversely, wildlife protection in the immediate proximity of the living space, such as the balcony, could meet with resistance. Measures to promote urban biodiversity are most successful when they are not only ecologically sensible but also socially acceptable. It is therefore necessary to combine knowledge about the way these animals live and people's acceptance of them. In this way, urban planning can simultaneously promote animal welfare in cities and avoid conflicts between humans and animals. https://phys.org/news/2024-05-survey-attitudes-urban-animals-people.html
