The Ukrainian president said his troops had grown in confidence, particularly in the Kharkiv region. However, his message comes after Russia's defence ministry said its forces captured the village of Starytsia in the Kharkiv region earlier today - just eight days after a new Russian push in the area began. "The occupier is losing its infantry and equipment, a tangible loss, even though, just as in 2022, it was counting on a quick advance on our land," Mr Zelenskyy said, referring to Russia's initial invasion of Ukraine in February of that year. In the eastern Donetsk region around Chasiv Yar, a city seen as a key target in Russia's campaign, Mr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces had repelled a Russian assault. "Our soldiers destroyed more than 20 units of the occupier's armoured vehicles," he added. https://news.sky.com/story/ukraine-war-latest-russian-forces-take-control-of-village-in-kharkiv-region-defence-ministry-12541713

Welcome to Investopedia's economics live blog, where we explain what the day's news says about the state of the U.S. economy and how that's likely to affect your finances. Here we compile data releases, economic reports, quotes from expert sources and anything else that helps explain economic issues and why they matter to you. Today, Federal Reserve speakers continued to speak about their fight against inflation and a leading economic indicators index showed declines over the past six months.Federal Reserve's Bowman Still Sees Case for Interest Rate Hikes If Inflation Persists 1 HR 20 MIN AGO Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman once again reiterated her openness to raising interest rates Friday, saying there are still risks that inflation could rise. “While the current stance of monetary policy appears to be at a restrictive level, I remain willing to raise the target range for the federal funds rate at a future meeting should the incoming data indicate that progress on inflation has stalled or reversed,” Bowman said at a Pennsylvania bankers’ convention. 1 Like other Fed officials, Bowman said the central bank needs more data showing a decline in inflation before it can move to change interest rates from their current 23-year high. Recently, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation gauge came in softer than expected and U.S. retail sales data showed consumers may be reaching their spending limit. However, Bowman said progress on inflation may still be slowing after price pressures eased substantially in the second half of last year. How the Housing Shortage Could Impact the U.S. Budget 1 HR 22 MIN AGO Add the federal budget to the long list of the aspects of American life affected by the chronic housing shortage. Members of the House Armed Service Committee are reportedly planning to ask for an extra $1.2 billion during the budget process to help servicemembers pay for housing, according to a report from Roll Call. 2 Military families and their civilian counterparts have faced soaring costs for shelter in the last few years. Potential home buyers have been hit by surging prices caused by a low number of homes for sale and mortgage rates that are at or near their highest in decades. These factors have pushed monthly mortgage payments on median-priced homes well out of reach for all but high-earning buyers. Those who lease their home have faced similar issues, with rents increasing 23% since the onset of the pandemic, according to the Consumer Price Index. 3 Marilyn Strickland, a Democratic congresswoman from Washington, whose district includes about 50,000 military personnel and civilians at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, told Roll Call that “access to affordable housing remains the top issue for servicemembers.” The military housing allowance is given to servicemembers to pay for civilian housing if they aren’t quartered on a military base. 4 While $1.2 billion is a drop in the bucket of the $825 billion defense budget, the request highlights how the high costs of housing have impacted every corner of the economy. https://www.investopedia.com/us-economy-news-may-17-8650246

TEHRAN –Out of the 1036 vertebrate animal species of the country, around 75 are on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, according to an official with the Department of Environment (DOE). Iran is one of the most important countries in terms of biodiversity in the world thanks to its climatic and geographic diversity. Out of 209 mammals, 560 birds, 242 reptiles, and 25 amphibians, some 75 species were included on the IUCN Red List in 2022, ISNA quoted Marzieh Mousavi as saying. She made the remarks on the occasion of World Endangered Species Day which is observed each year on the third Friday of May. The endangered species are mostly found in developing countries which suffer from severe financial problems, poverty, and unstable development. Having diverse ecosystems, the species' diversity is high in these countries which are mostly in America and even Asia. In contrast, Europe has less diversity, but they are well-preserved, Mousavi mentioned. The species are globally categorized as endangered, critically endangered, and vulnerable. However, in Iran endangered and critically endangered species are classified together, and protected species are in a separate category, the official stressed. The official went on to say that among endangered animal species, bustards and Asiatic cheetahs are in a more critical situation, there are roughly 19 species of bustards and 25 species of cheetahs identified in the country. Of course, the DOE has taken measures to increase the po[CENSORED]tion of these species. Efforts are being made to increase their po[CENSORED]tion through habitat protection and prey management in Turan, Miandasht, and its neighboring areas, she noted. The DOE is trying to improve the role of the private sector and local communities in creating a more sustainable livelihood and increasing their protection so that if a cheetah steps out of the protected areas, it survives. The official went on to elaborate on the main threats to the survival of species including habitat destruction and road accidents, drought, herd dogs, and invasive species. “50 percent of carnivore deaths are related to road accidents on the edge of protected areas. Improving the security of the roads, like Abbas Abad road, enhancing road lighting, and fencing are part of the measures taken, but more funds need to be allocated for this purpose,” she noted. Habitat destruction is another factor that affects the extinction of a species. Road construction, mining, overgrazing, and land use change greatly damage wildlife habitats and reduce po[CENSORED]tion size and genetic diversity within a species. Drought has resulted in decrease vegetation diversity and lack of food for herbivorous species. As the po[CENSORED]tion of herbivores declines, the carnivores are forced to move out of their domain and venture into residential areas in search of prey. Sometimes, it leads to a conflict between humans and predators prompting humans to use poisons and traps to reduce the conflict by killing them. Stray herd dogs have also emerged as serious menace to animal species, especially the Pallas cat that resides in the highlands. In this regard, people should be informed of the threats posed by dogs to refrain from feeding them. Invasive species are another source of threat to native animal species. Raccoons and nutria are among the invasive species. Tilapia fish is also a non-native species posing harm to native aquatic species once introduced to the water ecosystems of the country. By saving wildlife, we protect all forms of life on the planet, ourselves, and ultimately maintain the balance of life on the earth. World Endangered Species Day is observed annually to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species and the efforts required to conserve them. By improving local communities, private sectors, and individuals’ roles in preserving wildlife along with the help of today's science and technology, we can make sure that ecosystems can thrive and plant and animal species can exist for future generations. https://www.tehrantimes.com/news/498592/Some-75-animal-species-in-Iran-on-IUCN-Red-List

How can you not like the Nissan Frontier Hardbody Edition? It’s just an appearance kit, sure, but it’s one that works, with throwback three-spoke wheels, 4x4 graphics, and a black front bumper that evokes its 1980s namesake. All it needs is some KC Daylighters on the sport bar to complete the package. What’s funny is that the Frontier doesn’t need retro styling to feel like a throwback. Yes, this third-generation Frontier debuted just three years ago, but it’s based on the second-gen truck that came out in 2004. Even in 2021, this Frontier felt a bit old, and since then, we've seen the launches of brand-new versions of the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon. (Plus the arrival of the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick, and an update for the Honda Ridgeline, if you want to include car-based pickups.)Get in the Frontier, and you’ll find bits and pieces Nissan’s used for decades. There’s no option for a digital gauge cluster, no big fancy infotainment screen, nothing. And where all the other mid-size rivals use turbo four-cylinders—hell, the Tacoma’s gone hybrid—the Frontier has a naturally aspirated V-6. It’s behind the times, yet it’s not a huge problem.Usually when an automotive journalist describes a car as “charming,” it’s really damning with faint praise. Except, that’s not the case with the Frontier. This truck has all you need, and nothing you don’t. I’ve spent a lot of time in new Tacomas recently, and while it’s a great truck, a lot of its bang-up-to-date technology doesn’t necessarily make life better. The digital gauge cluster in that truck is hard to configure, and while the infotainment system is certainly better, you’re just going to use CarPlay or Android Auto anyway, so who cares? And why do we need such big screens? https://www.motor1.com/reviews/719678/2024-nissan-frontier-hardbody-review/

England all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt has revealed she missed the opening T20 against Pakistan after egg freezing treatment. Sciver-Brunt has been married to former England fast bowler Katherine Sciver-Brunt since May 2022, and revealed that the pair want to start a family after Nat has finished her career."Katherine and myself would love to start a family but I'd also love to keep playing cricket," said Sciver-Brunt as part of the Under the Lid podcast. "I'd only just started back to exercise, so wasn't quite ready to play," she continued. The procedure involved harvesting and freezing a woman's eggs so she can have children at a later date."I'd like to carry a baby when I finish playing cricket and I think Katherine would like to carry a baby as well," she said. "We are lucky in that we have more options than one. We're just working out the best way for us to go about it."England have been really good. The sports science and medical department are really supportive and helping me along the way, making sure coming back to cricket has been smooth. After the procedure you're wiped out for quite a few days." Katherine Sciver-Brunt said on the podcast: "If Nat was 24 she might want to have a child, then come back and play. At 31, it's on the verge," she said. "Freezing the eggs now and having healthy eggs to come back to - it's great to be able to have that choice because it's not cheap and very invasive." Katherine Sciver-Brunt was England's all-time leading wicket-taker, retiring after a 19-year career in 2023. https://www.skysports.com/cricket/news/12123/13137755/nat-sciver-brunt-reveals-she-missed-first-england-t20-vs-pakistan-after-egg-freezing-treatment

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — In 2018, Chad McGehee opened Side Hustle Brews and Spirits, an Abu Dhabi-branded brewery and distillery with funky camels on its cans and playful names familiar to anyone living in the United Arab Emirates. The only problem was it was illegal to produce alcohol in the country, so his company made its hoppy India pale ale in the United States and then imported it to the UAE for sale. That’s all changed as Abu Dhabi has overhauled its laws to allow for the micro and craft breweries that have taken the rest of the world by storm, part of a wider reconsideration of alcohol policies in the Islamic nation increasingly drawing tourists. And McGehee’s dream of IPAs in Arabia became a reality — though it took hard work as they were the first to open. “The government had created a regulation around fermentation, but the steps of getting a permit, the steps of inspection, all of these things were not put on paper yet. So that had to be built out as we were going through this process,” McGehee said on a recent afternoon at his brew pub on Abu Dhabi’s Al Maryah Island. Abu Dhabi long has been considered by those living in the UAE to be more buttoned-up than the rambunctious neighboring emirate of Dubai, home to night clubs, beach bars and pubs drawing tourists and residents to imbibe. In the seven emirates of the UAE, Sharjah outright bans the sale and consumption of alcohol, like neighboring Saudi Arabia, as well as Iran and Kuwait. https://apnews.com/article/uae-alcohol-laws-abu-dhabi-brewery-30769c8d693cd46d5fb419b70c7dc388

One person killed, eight injured in Russian attack on Odesa One person has been killed and another eight injured in a Russian missile attack near the Black Sea port of Odesa, a Ukrainian official has said. Regional governor Oleh Kiper said five people were being treated in hospital. He posted pictures showing emergency workers near the scene of the strike. Sky News has not independently verified the report. Odesa has been a frequent target of Russian missile and drone attacks.Putin 'feigning interest in peace negotiations', say analysts President Vladimir Putin used his meeting with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to "promote Kremlin narratives feigning interest in peace negotiations", analysts at the Institute for the Study of War say. The pair signed a joint statement yesterday alluding to Russia's support for the China's proposed peace plan and a possible future Chinese-led negotiation to end the war in Ukraine. In the statement, they claim both countries support a "sustainable settlement" for the "Ukraine crisis".The ISW said it has "previously assessed" the Kremlin will "continue to use any calls for peace negotiations to feign interest in negotiations" in the hope of undermining Western support for Ukraine. Moscow also hopes the West will force Ukraine into negotiations with Russia that make concessions on Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, the ISW added. 'Decisive' relationship Meanwhile, the institute says, Mr Putin likely views Moscow's relationship with Beijing as "decisive" in his bid to further mobilise the Russian economy and defence industry to support his war in Ukraine. "Putin and Xi highlighted bilateral trade and economic cooperation throughout their public speeches," the ISW says, adding the Russian delegation includes officials and businessmen. "The Russian delegation likely aimed to expand cooperation with their Chinese counterparts that will facilitate increased economic ties between Russia and the PRC [People's Republic of China]." China has previously signalled concerns its economic relationship with Russia may open it up to sanctions, the ISW says, and Mr Putin "likely intends to head off these concerns as the Russian defence industry grows increasingly reliant on the PRC".Russian oil refinery in emergency shutdown after 'Ukrainian drone' ignites fire Earlier today, we reported how a purported Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at an oil refinery in Krasnodar, Russia. The blaze has forced an emergency shut down at the facility, owned by Rosneft, two sources familiar with the matter have told Reuters. According to one source, the drones hit the liquefied petroleum gas production unit while the crude distillation unit remained undamaged. "There was no black smoke during the fire. That means it was just the gas burning", a source said. Russia's state-run TASS news agency reported the fire was extinguished, citing local authorities. The Russian defence ministry said air defences downed 44 drones over the Krasnodar region and six over the Belgorod region. For context: The Tuapse plant's annual capacity is 12 million metric tons, or 240,000 barrels per day. It produces naphtha, fuel oil, vacuum gasoil and high-sulphur diesel, and supplies fuel mainly Turkey, China, Malaysia and Singapore. https://news.sky.com/story/ukraine-war-latest-putin-russia-moscow-kremlin-shoigu-kharkiv-battlefield-12541713

Europe’s macroeconomic outlook is brighter — but markets may be underestimating the potential for sudden destabilization due to geopolitics, the vice-president of the European Central Bank said Thursday. “We are talking about the electoral cycle that is going to take place not only in the U.S., but as well in Europe. And simultaneously, we are referring to geopolitical risks. I think that, you know, markets sometimes are underestimating the potential impact of geopolitical risks that are there,” Luis de Guindos told CNBC’s Annette Weisbach. Markets are good at calibrating financial and economic risks but struggle to incorporate the separate dimension of geopolitical risk which is often viewed as an all-or-nothing binary, he said. Stock markets in Europe and the U.S. have soared to record highs this year, brushing past the impact of ongoing wars in the Middle East and Ukraine and a host of coming elections in which half the world’s adult po[CENSORED]tion will head to the polls. The ECB on Thursday released its latest Financial Stability Report, which stated that euro area financial stability has improved due to a better economic outlook and falling inflation. Rising geopolitical risks present “considerable downside risks,” the ECB warned in the report. Risks remain “high” on a historical basis, it added, given factors such as rising debt service costs, signs of banking profits peaking, and the ongoing downturn in commercial real estate. The report attributes the rally in financial markets to analyst expectations of interest rate cuts from major central banks this year. “Growing signs of pricing-for-perfection [are] creating the potential for outsized market reactions to disappointments,” the report said. De Guindos said the ECB did not factor in any concrete outcomes when it comes to the results of the elections, but that overall they posed the possibility of additional fragmentation in the global economy. The ECB vice-president noted an increase in tariffs and the implementation of protectionist measures from some countries. “This is going to give rise to fragmentation in terms of trade, in terms of growth, and that will reduce the potential growth of the global economy,” he said. “That comes on top of the risk factors from Ukraine and the Middle East.” An abrupt market correction poses a “potential vulnerability,” De Guindos warned. “That is a risk that we have to take into consideration when looking forward.” “And that’s the element that you cannot ignore, you cannot overlook this potential impact that could affect risk aversion, risk attraction, commodity prices, growth, overall growth in the global economy.” https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/16/markets-are-underestimating-geopolitical-risk-ecbs-de-guindos-says.html

That's according to a new study, which suggests that while consumers consider sustainability important, other factors such as taste, quality, and animal welfare take precedence in their purchasing decisions. On product labels, consumers valued information regarding animal welfare, food safety, and health and nutrition. The results can help producers to market particularly sustainably produced food products in a more targeted way and make them more attractive to consumers. The study was conducted across five European countries—Czechia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK to identify the attributes that are most important to consumers buying meat or dairy products. Taking part in an online survey, 3,192 participants were asked to rate the importance of 18 different factors when shopping for meat and dairy products on a scale from 1 (not at all important) to 5 (extremely important): Attributes—freshness, quality/taste, healthy eating, nutrition, price, processing, special offers, convenience of use/preparation, and familiarity of brand. Animal welfare attributes—animal welfare, outdoor-reared/free range, and pasture-fed. Attributes related to environmental sustainability—locally produced, sustainable packaging, food miles, carbon footprint, and organic. Social sustainability—Fair trade or producer/farmer fairly paid. Across all surveyed countries, consumers consistently prioritized freshness, quality/taste, and animal welfare as the most important attributes. In contrast, environmental factors such as food miles, carbon footprint, and organic production were deemed less important in influencing purchasing decisions. However, sustainability labels were perceived as helpful among consumers. Study co-author Dr. Andy Jin, Senior Lecturer in Risk Management in the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of Portsmouth, said, "Our study highlights the complex interplay of factors that influence consumer behavior when buying meat and dairy products. Consumers indicated that information related to animal welfare, food safety, and health and nutrition was considered more important than environmental sustainability when making food choices. "The findings demonstrate the importance of labeling strategies that encompass multiple aspects of product attributes, beyond environmental considerations alone." The implications of the research extend further than consumers to policymakers, producers, and retailers in the food industry who are striving to meet evolving consumer demands for more sustainable products. Dr. Jin added, "Labels on their own are not enough to change behavior, especially for consumers who have low or no behavioral intention to buy sustainable meat or dairy products. "These results should be translated into additional policy measures, such as nudges or behavioral interventions, helping individuals translate their attitudes into behavior and facilitating the choice of sustainably produced products." The research, published in the journal Food Quality and Preference, was conducted by the universities of Portsmouth and Newcastle in the UK, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, University of Córdoba in Spain, Mendel University in Czech Republic and Agroscope from Switzerland. https://phys.org/news/2024-05-reveals-consumers-animal-welfare-environmental.html

Some people think Mercedes-Benz has lost its way. Questionable design choices across its electric EQ lineup and four-cylinder hybrids in place of fire-breathing V-8s have mainstream buyers and enthusiasts alike wondering, ‘What’s going on in Stuttgart?’ But not all hope is lost, because the Mercedes-AMG G63 still exists. And it’s even better than before. The G63 is proof that Mercedes still knows its stuff. Visually the SUV is near-unchanged from the outgoing model, and there’s still a twin-turbo V-8 under the hood. The company could’ve gone on selling the same truck as before, and it’d still be the greatest SUV on sale today. But AMG improved the formula, adding a mild hybrid system and a revolutionary suspension. There are a handful of exterior changes for 2025, but you really have to know where to look. There’s a new grille, new LED headlights and taillights, silver-painted brake calipers, and an AMG crest on the hood. That’s about it. The biggest changes, as ever with the G-Wagen, lie under the skin. The 4.0-liter eight-cylinder engine is, thankfully, untouched for 2025, making the same 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque as before. Between it and the nine-speed auto sits the new piece of kit: an integrated starter generator (ISG) that adds up to 20 hp and 148 lb-ft when revs are low, assisting forward motion. Together, the two power sources are enough for a claimed 0-60 mph time of just 4.2 seconds, 0.3 seconds quicker than before. Top speed is electronically limited to 137 mph. In practice that extra spice is immediately noticeable, delivering that little bit of push when you set off or when you put your foot down at highway speeds. Not that the V-8 is laggy or the nine-speed is slow, but having that hint of electric immediacy on tap provides another layer of confidence to go for that gap or make that pass. And best of all, it doesn’t hinder the thunderous V-8 rumble we’ve come to know and love. https://www.motor1.com/reviews/719130/2025-mercedes-amg-g63-review/
