  1. As member economies set their sights on boosting inclusion in the Asia-Pacific region, APEC ministers and officials will arrive in Arequipa, the second largest city in Peru, to drive forward policies that support the formalization of the informal economy and the inclusion of more women, youth and persons with disabilities into trade and other economic sectors. "For the very first time in the history of APEC, we will have a joint meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade and Women that will spotlight the value of including and empowering more women in trade in the region," said Ambassador Carlos Vasquez, the 2024 Chair of APEC Senior Officials' Meeting. The APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting, chaired by Elizabeth Galdo Marín, Peru's newly appointed Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, will be held on 17-18 May. Preceding this meeting, the High-Level Policy Dialogue on Women and the Economy to be chaired by Peru's Minister of Women and Vulnerable Po[CENSORED]tions, Angela Teresa Hernández, will be held on 16 May. The first-ever joint meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade and Ministers of Women will be held on 17 May, co-chaired by Minister Marín and Minister Hernández. The ministerial meetings will strengthen inclusion of women and vulnerable po[CENSORED]tions in APEC. Informality is another focus priority that Peru, the host of APEC 2024, has put forward as it aims to lead deliberations on measures to support the formalization of economic actors. "Building on what has been achieved by APEC hosts in the past, as well as the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040, we will propose a roadmap which includes best practices and public policy recommendations to empower the most vulnerable segments of our po[CENSORED]tion to successfully transition from informality to the formal economy," Ambassador Vasquez added. Ambassador Vasquez explained that emphasis is being placed on innovation and digitalization as some of the most important tools to facilitate this transition, noting that they are also including financial inclusion, access to public health services, education and the judicial system. "Digitalization is another focus area to help boost formalization. Many experts have stated that digital tools are instrumental in reducing informality levels not only in Peru but in other economies as they reduce transaction costs and registration fees," he said . "When we journeyed to meet the APEC's Bogor Goals of free and open trade, our focus was on trade and investment liberalization," said Dr Rebecca Sta Maria, Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat. "Today, guided by the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040 and the Aotearoa Plan of Action, we not only retain our focus on trade and investment but also incorporate a strong push for digitalization and innovation, and sustainable and inclusive growth, all of which are necessary to build a stronger, more resilient future." Dr Sta Maria added. Arequipa will also host meetings and activities related to human resources development including a dialogue on inclusion and empowerment of people with disabilities using digital strategies, as well as workshops on new and emerging digital technologies to promote a secure and trusted information, communication and technology environment. APEC Digital Week, held in the margins of the Second APEC Senior Officials' Meeting and Related Meetings in Arequipa, will feature experts from other international organizations, private sectors, small businesses, academia, as well as government officials to exchange views on best practices and policies related to trade digitalization, closing the digital divide and digital sustainability. /Public Release. 2. “It is good to have a balance. Incorporating a variety of animal and plant-based proteins in your diet is beneficial. Animal proteins offer essential amino acids and nutrients for muscle growth, while plant-based proteins provide fibre, vitamins, minerals, and health benefits like reduced risk of chronic diseases,” says Dr Sangeeta Tiwari, clinical nutritionist, Artemis Lite, New Friends Colony, Delhi. Overall, protein consumption has benefits such as muscle growth and repair. “Protein has amino acids that are the necessary building blocks, essential for muscle tissue repair and growth after exercise or injury. It helps in weight management as it increases the feelings of fullness and satiety, which helps in controlling appetite and reducing overall calorie intake. It has a higher thermic effect in comparison to fats and carbs, which means that it requires more energy to digest, potentially boosting metabolism. It is also linked with increased bone mineral density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures while strengthening the immune system, helping in producing antibodies and supporting immune cell function, which aids in illness prevention and recovery,” adds Tiwari. Intake of plant-based proteins helps to maintain weight as well as cardiovascular health while including animal sources provides essential nutrients for the body, says fitness and nutritional scientist Siddhant Bhargava, who is also the co-founder of Food Darzee, a health and nutrition startup that offers scientifically planned diets and customised meal plans. “This would have a composite nutritional profile that would be beneficial towards maintaining holistic well-being,” he adds. Why plant protein Across studies, it has been found that plant-based meats typically offer fewer calories and less saturated fat than their animal-based counterparts and have the advantage of containing zero cholesterol and being a source of dietary fibre. Alternative proteins often match or even exceed the protein content found in conventional meats, as per the Good Food Institute (GFI) India, the central expert organisation, thought leader, and convening body in the Indian ‘alternative protein’ or ‘smart protein’ sector suggests. “Initial studies suggest that swapping conventional meat for plant-based meat could reduce the risk of heart disease and bowel cancer and improve gut health. The products in the market are healthier and environmentally sustainable than the animal-derived counterparts that they seek to replace—a plant-based meat sausage is unlikely to have more additives or preservatives than a meat-based sausage. In fact, preservatives commonly used in processed meats—sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite—are classified by the World Health Organization as ‘probably carcinogenic to humans’. Plant-based meats do not contain these preservatives,” says Sneha Singh, acting managing director, GFI India. When it comes to sources like microalgae and seaweed which are sustainable treasure troves of nutritionally valuable compounds, their integration into the alternative protein sector could help meet both nutritional needs and sustainability goals. “We can expect plant-based meats to become increasingly nutritious and surpass animal meats in terms of health benefits whilst avoiding the negative implications of consuming animal-derived protein. From a public health perspective, livestock farming in India and industrialised animal agriculture has come under attention due to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics and its contribution to pandemic risk. Plant-based meat is free from harmful growth hormones or antibiotics, safeguarding against antimicrobial resistance and hormone imbalances. As the pressures of intensification of livestock farming increase, there is a subsequent risk of livestock-related and zoonotic diseases emerging from keeping animals in confined and unhygienic environments. Plant-based meat has the potential to future-proof our protein supply against these risks,” adds Singh. The plant-based vs animal-based protein debate revolves around nutrition, environment, and ethics. Animal proteins like meat, fish, eggs, and dairy offer complete amino acids and high bioavailability but carry risks of saturated fat, cholesterol, and environmental strain. Plant proteins from legumes, nuts, grains, and soy are healthier, sustainable, and ethical, but may lack certain amino acids and be less absorbable. “The choice depends on individual needs, values, and health goals. Plant-based proteins are rich in fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, lower in cholesterol and saturated fat, and encouraging general health. Due to their nutrient-rich nature, they are associated with a lower incidence of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Even lessen the burden on the environment, work to decrease the market for animal products in order to promote the moral treatment of animals and whole grains, tofu, tempeh, nuts, seeds, and legumes provide diversity. As compared to animal products, they are frequently available and reasonably priced,” adds Kiran Dalal, chief dietitian, Fortis Hospital, Faridabad. Individual health goals Proper protein intake facilitates muscle maintenance, flexibility and metabolic health which are vital for better living conditions and probably longer life span, says Bhargava of Food Darzee. “Protein consumption positively impacts longevity by maintaining muscle mass, promoting metabolic health, enhancing bone density, aiding in weight management, and bolstering immune function. These factors collectively contribute to a longer, healthier life by reducing the risk of age-related ailments and improving overall well-being,” says Tiwari of Artemis Lite. But the superiority of plant or animal protein depends on individual health goals and lifestyle. It is very individualistic, feels Tiwari. “Animal proteins offer complete amino acids and essential nutrients but may be high in saturated fats. Plant proteins are lower in saturated fats, higher in fibre, and linked to reduced disease risk. A varied diet including both can support overall health and dietary needs,” she adds. In the Indian diet, plant-based protein sources include lentils such as masoor dal, moong dal, toor dal, and chana dal, along with chickpeas (chana), beans like rajma, lobia and chawli, and green peas. Soy products like soybeans, tofu, soy milk and soy chunks are also widely used. Paneer, nuts and seeds like almonds, cashews, peanuts and sesame seeds are common additions, as well as whole grains such as quinoa, amaranth and bulgur wheat. These diverse options provide ample protein along with essential nutrients in traditional Indian cuisine. https://www.financialexpress.com/lifestyle/health/animal-vs-plant-protein-whats-your-ideal-pick/3477265/

  4. Vitality County Championship, Division Two, Headingley (day two) Glamorgan 221 (79 overs): B Root 51; Bess 4-25, Moriarty 4-74 Yorkshire 295-2 (49 overs): Bean 140*, J Root 92* Yorkshire (4 pts) lead Glamorgan (0 pts) by 74 runs with eight first-innings wickets standing Match scorecard By Nick Webb, BBC Radio Wales Sport England batter Joe Root and young opener Finlay Bean put Yorkshire in complete control as they raced to 295 for two against Glamorgan, already a lead of 74 runs. Bean’s aggressive 140 not out is a career-best while Root looks set for a second century of the season. The pair added 201 unbroken runs for the third wicket in style despite playing on a used pitch. Dom Bess and Dan Moriarty claimed four wickets each as Glamorgan were bundled out for just 221, Colin Ingram’s 48 the only substantial day two contribution. At the start of a day played entirely under floodlights, the experienced pair of Ingram and Chris Cooke had to work hard for their stand of 65. Cooke reached 24 before slapping Moriarty to Harry Brook at cover, but Ingram launched a sudden assault on Moriarty as he tried to regain the initiative. Bess trapped Ingram lbw on the back foot for 48, and that marked the beginning of the end for the Glamorgan effort. James Harris (16) was given out caught at short leg off Moriarty for 16, while the inexperienced Tom Bevan was dropped twice in his 22 before Bean claimed his third catch, Bess the bowler. Bess and Moriarty claimed a fourth wicket apiece to polish off the tail, and Yorkshire were quickly into their stride with the bat despite Bean playing out three opening maidens from Jamie McIlroy and then surviving a return chance to James Harris. Adam Lyth hit five boundaries but was judged leg-before to Pakistan seamer Mir Hamza, but Bean and Shan Masood upped the tempo in a stylish partnership of 68 before Masood was caught at short-leg off Mason Crane for 34. Devastating Root Yorkshire were in complete control for the final session and as they took the attack to Glamorgan with once-capped leg-spinner Crane suffering horribly. Left-hander Bean hit his stride as he played some brutal shots, reaching three figures off just 111 balls despite his cautious start, his fourth first-class century in only 35 first-class innings. Meanwhile Root found gaps all around the ground, sweeping to devastating effect and going at a run a ball without apparent effort as the partnership took the home side into the lead in only the 36th over. Bean had time to pass his previous career-best score of 135 before bad light saved Glamorgan from further punishment, the umpires taking the players off 12 overs before the scheduled close with the out-fielders unable to pick up the ball in the gloom. It looks like only a temporary reprieve for the shell-shocked visitors, with Yorkshire looking well-set for maximum batting points before turning the pressure back on the Welsh side’s batters. Yorkshire batter Finlay Bean said: “It’s gone exactly how we wanted, on that pitch one of the big things was for the spinners to play a big part, then with the bat, it was pleasing to build big partnerships and not lose many wickets. “It’s always nice to get a career-best and get a first (hundred) of the season, to set up the game and go at the rate we did puts us in the driving seat. “I had the mindset to go out and put them under a bit more pressure, put them off their lines and lengths. We’ll aim for full batting points and take it from there. “Joe is just so busy, you look up and he’s on 30 off 20 balls, it’s remarkable how he goes about it. It’s something to learn from because he’s just so aggressive and positive.” Glamorgan assistant coach David Harrison said: “When very good players get in on a good wicket, we couldn’t control the scoreboard like we wanted to and we’re behind a bit, we’ve got to come back better. “We’ve got to bowl better as a group, bowl one side of the wicket and try to be more consistent since there’s a bit of spin there.” https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/articles/c6py7dp712no
  5. Zendaya gave a knowing smile. Since she last attended the New York City fashion extravaganza in 2019, she has become not only a leading actress on screen (lately, in the tennis romance “Challengers”) but a red-carpet force whose looks can be anticipated almost as hotly as the projects they are meant to promote. Her committed style of dressing has become “a tool of both image-making and moneymaking,” wrote Jessica Testa, a fashion reporter for The New York Times. So it is of intense interest to red-carpet watchers that Zendaya will return to the Met Gala on Monday for the first time in five years, this time as a co-chair. She will be styled by Law Roach, the “image architect” who has been working with her since she was 13.Zendaya’s willingness to take fashion risks has been on display at her past five Met Gala appearances, which have involved chain mail, parrots and a color-changing Cinderella dress with a pumpkin carriage purse. But ascending the steps has not exactly gotten easier with practice, she told Ripa: “It’s still terrifying.” Festive offer Here’s a look at Zendaya’s Met Gala history. 2019: ‘Camp: Notes on fashion’ For the camp-themed gala in 2019, Zendaya assumed full Cinderella cosplay in a billowing ballgown with puff sleeves by Tommy Hilfiger. It transformed from gray to a luminous blue with the wave of a wand by Roach, who dressed as her fairy godmother.Zendaya wore Versace’s take on armor to the 2018 Met Gala, complete with glittering silver epaulets, a spiked metal collar and a deep, single-leg split. The heavy gown was leavened by a wavy red bob with bangs. Roach has said the inspiration for the look arrived while he was sleeping. “I dreamt of Joan of Arc one night and called Versace and was like, ‘What if we did something to reference Joan of Arc?’” he told WWD. “They came back with really, really great sketches.”Zendaya arrived at the 2016 Met Gala in a sleek, form-fitting column of gold fabric by Michael Kors with a taut collar and a single sleeve. Her eye makeup evoked gunmetal, and her hair was in a high-gloss bowl cut.Zendaya attended her first Met Gala when she was 18, just a few years after her debut on the Disney Channel dance show “Shake It Up.” She wore a Fausto Puglisi dress with a black bodice and a short red skirt, adding a headband and wrist cuff with a sunburst pattern to match. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/zendaya-met-gala-red-carpet-9307798/
  6. ISTANBUL: Turkish Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek on Saturday cited positive results of the government's economic programme in response to credit ratings agency S&P upgrading Turkey's ratings to "B+" from "B". "We are determined to carry the confidence in our country to the highest level with our strengthened programme," Simsek wrote on the X social media platform. Credit ratings agency S&P on Friday upgraded Turkey's ratings to "B+" from "B", saying that the coordination between monetary, fiscal, and income policy is set to improve, amid external rebalancing. Moody's credit rating agency raised Turkey's credit rating outlook from stable to positive in January. In March, Fitch Ratings also upgraded Turkey's credit rating from "B" to "B+" and changed its rating outlook from stable to positive. The credit action comes a week after the Turkish central bank kept its policy rate unchanged at 50 percent. Turkey's central bank, which announced a 500 basis-point rise in March, said on Friday that inflationary pressures remained alive. The central bank has hiked rates by 3,650 basis points since June last year. The ratings agency said it could consider raising Turkey's sovereign rating if policymakers manage to reduce inflation, restore confidence in the lira, narrow current account deficits, and reverse dollarization. "We don't anticipate the inflation rate in Turkiye dropping to single digits until 2028," the agency said in a statement. Minister Simsek said the successful outcomes of their ongoing economic program have reverberated in the assessments of credit rating agencies. “S&P upgraded Turkey's credit rating by one notch after 11 years and maintained its positive outlook. The optimistic outlooks of S&P, Fitch and Moody's signal further credit upgrades. With unwavering determination, we are determined to maximize confidence in our country by persistently strengthening and implementing our program.” Commenting on the credit rating upgrade, Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO) President Sekib Avdagic emphasized that following Fitch, S&P Global also upgraded Turkey's credit rating from “B” to “B+” and maintained its credit rating outlook as “positive.” "With the commencement of the disinflation process, particularly in the latter part of the year, we anticipate bolstering confidence in the economy both domestically and internationally, fostering an accelerated influx of foreign capital. As our concerted efforts against inflation persist, marked by coordination and resolve, the Turkish economy stands to emerge victorious. The current and anticipated upticks will significantly bolster market sentiment and Türkiye's outlook," Avdagic stated. Experts also consider S&P's upgrade of Turkey's credit rating an important development and expect other credit rating agencies to make similar upgrades. Timothy Ash, an emerging markets strategist at Bluebay Asset Management, praised the decision, attributing it to the effective policy arrangements implemented by Simsek and his team. “Turkey's resilience in overcoming economic risks necessitated this development,” Ash said. https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/1185431-turkey-finance-minister-cites-economic-programme-after-s-p-upgrade

  10. hen it comes to the nation’s economy and a presidential election, which candidate gets the blame and who gets the credit often depends on a person’s politics. The nation’s economy affects how people vote in presidential elections, and their political viewpoints often skew the way they view the economy. How and why those worlds collide will be the topic of a panel discussion at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center of Public Affairs, “The 2024 Election and the Struggle for America’s Economic Future,” set for May 10 from 1 to 2 p.m. The panel will feature Scott C. Miller, director of the Miller Center’s Project on Democracy and Capitalism, which is sponsoring the program; Suzanne Mettler, professor of American institutions at Cornell University; and New York Times columnist and UVA alumnus Jamelle Bouie. UVA politics professor Sid Milkis will moderate the discussion. Although tickets to the event have sold out, registration is available for viewing it online. UVA Today checked in with Miller to get an idea of how the economy can affect elections. Q. Does the nation’s economy really affect elections as much as we think? A. The state of the economy always has an impact on the election. There is a reason James Carville said, “It’s the economy, stupid.” However, what a “strong” or “weak” economy” means is highly variable. Almost any economist would acknowledge that the U.S. economy looks strong right now – low unemployment, significant wage growth, the erosion of years of inequality. However, macroeconomic forces look very different in different contexts. For example, inflation has been front and center on the American mind, and according to many surveys has driven negative perceptions of an otherwise strong economy in recent years. The idea that you can have a good job, a good salary, and still not afford to buy a house can sour people on an otherwise booming economy, and in so doing influence the election cycle. Q. Presidents often try to influence the economy, from Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s tinkering with federal programs to Nixon’s wage and price controls. How effective have presidents been, and do they really deserve as much blame and credit as they get or claim? A. I tend to follow the maxim of an English (soccer) manager who said, “A good manager can make a team 10% better, but a bad manager can make it 50% worse.” The same is true for presidents and the economy. I believe that a lot of blame/credit is viewed through too short a timeframe. I think that we should expand our temporal horizons and evaluate economic policy over the course of decades, as opposed to years or even quarters. Sound economic policy often takes a while to implement, and even longer to filter through the system and may produce a short-term slowing of the economy. However, elections play out in the very short term and the wise policy that will pay off in the long run can be seen as a negative by the electorate. Likewise, a president can push through a policy regime that can juice the economy in the short term, while producing major structural problems beyond the present election cycle. I think that voters should look at what a president wants to change about the system as a whole, rather than their evaluation of it at the present moment. Q. The current U.S. electorate appears highly polarized. What difficulties face the American economy and political system in this election? A. First, I should say that while we are certainly polarized at the moment, I am not sure that we are any more polarized than we have been on average over the course of American history. In 1800, John Adams assured voters that the election of Thomas Jefferson would lead to the streets running knee-deep with blood, while Jefferson suggested that Adams would, quite literally, hand over the country to the king of England as soon as he was inaugurated. Likewise, in the 1930s you had “America First” rallies of American Nazis in Madison Square Garden while parades marched down Broadway with signs that said “Joseph Stalin, My Leader.” It is bad right now, but I don’t think it is that bad. That said, just because we have survived these polarization crises in the past does not mean that we automatically will today. Most Americans, both throughout our history and today, believe the United States is a flawed, but still very real “shining city on a hill.” I deeply believe this myself. Economically, I am actually quite bullish on the United States. It is true that inflation has not come down as much as we would like. However, considering we are only a few years out from a pandemic into which the Federal Reserve poured trillions of dollars to avoid a catastrophic deflation crisis, I believe we are doing as well as anybody could have hoped. This does not mean many Americans are not struggling. The affordability crisis in housing is a major problem. Raising interest rates was essential to bring down inflation, but it also made the cost of housing skyrocket. When combined with major constraints on building in almost every market, many Americans feel like they are being pinched in ways they cannot escape. Q. Can the factors that create economic conditions be resolved by “the right person” coming to power? A. History shows time and again that structural factors, as opposed to the elevation of a single leader, are much more important in addressing socioeconomic issues. Any single person with enough power to singularly address a problem also has the power to royally mess things up. The dream of a benevolent and enlightened despot – who can solve climate change by decree, for example – relies on that person remaining benevolent and enlightened forever. Let’s just say these types of figures are quite rare in human history. This is where independent institutions, buttressed by intrinsic norms, are invaluable. While messy and a bit slow, democratic capitalism has served not just the United States, but the countries in the world with the highest standards of living (and yes, this includes the very capitalist northern European countries like Denmark and Sweden), very well over the last century. https://news.virginia.edu/content/qa-do-politics-and-economics-go-hand-hand
  11. UNITED NATIONS (APP) -The UN General Assembly Thursday adopted a resolution, sponsored by Pakistan and 8 other countries, to proclaim May 24 as the International Day of the Markhor. The resolution invites worldwide observance of the Day and invites all relevant stakeholders to give due consideration to enhancing international and regional cooperation in support of efforts to conserve the Markhor, given its role in the overall ecosystem. The Markhor is the national animal of Pakistan, where it is also known as “screw-horned goat. The resolution invites the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to facilitate the observance of the International Day of the Markhor. The text underlines that the Markhor is an iconic and ecologically significant species found across the mountainous regions of Central and South Asia. It recognizes that preserving the Markhor and its natural habitat is an ecological imperative and a significant opportunity to bolster the regional economy, foster conservation efforts and promote sustainable tourism and economic growth. In Pakistan, Markhors are found in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province’s Chitral, Kohistan and Kalam regions, as well as the Gilgit-Baltistan region, the Balochistan province and parts of Azad Kashmir. Once believed to be on the brink of extinction, Markhor numbers have gradually increased, doubling in a couple of decades, with a particular jump since 2014. This is now the 10th straight year that numbers of the long-horned wild goat have grown. “The po[CENSORED]tion of the Markhor has been increasing with an annual ratio of 2% since 2014,” Saeed Abbas, an official with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Pakistan, was quoted as saying in a media interview. The Markhor’s current estimated po[CENSORED]tion is between 3,500 and 5,000, a majority of them in KP, followed by Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan, according to Abbas. https://dunyanews.tv/en/Pakistan/809144-UNGA-declares-May-24-as-int’l-day-of-Markhor,-Pakistan’s-national-animal
  12. Kia is expected to launch a high-performance GT variant of the three-row EV9 crossover early next year. During a CEO Investor Day last month, the automaker's global chief, Ho Sung Song, said focusing on performance trims will be part of Kia's strategy to achieve global sales of 1.6 million electric vehicles in 2030. Song said the automaker would "continuously release" GT variants of dedicated EVs and that an EV9 GT based on a high-output dual motor with "fast acceleration and stable driving performance" would debut in January. Kia's presentation deck teased that the souped-up kid hauler would be able to go from 0 to 60 mph in four seconds and that the "stable driving performance" at high speeds would come from a reinforced suspension and an electronic braking system. The EV6 GT is already on sale in the U.S. and wowed the supercar world when it outaccelerated a Ferrari Roma and Lamborghini Huracan Evo RWD Spyder in a test conducted in 2022 by AMCI. It clocked a 0-to-60-mph time of 3.4 seconds The all-wheel-drive compact electric crossover uses a 77.4-kilowatt-hour battery pack, delivers 576 hp and 545-pound-feet of torque and has a 218-mile range. It's the most expensive variant in the lineup, with a starting price of $62,975 including shipping. The EV9 is on sale in the U.S., South Korea, the Middle East and Europe. In the presentation, Song did not specify in what regions the EV9 GT would launch. A Kia America spokesperson declined to comment on future models but said that in the first five months of sales, the top-end EV9 GT-Line has been the most po[CENSORED]r model. The GT-Line is an appearance upgrade with sportier design elements, but it lacks the performance enhancements of a GT version. https://www.autonews.com/cars-concepts/kia-ev9-gt-expected-january-2025

  14. Summer is synonymous with many delicious fruits — from mangoes and watermelon to lychee and muskmelon. But have you ever tasted zaam or water rose apples — those bright red watery treats that have a crisp texture? This refreshingly sweet fruit, also known Java apple, chambakka, jambaka fruit, and wax apple, is not only delicious but also rich in fibre, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin C, making them a must-have in the season. Also, owing to their high water content this fruit is effective at quenching thirst. “The high water content of water apples contributes to increased hydration, which is vital for preventing dryness, dehydration, and fatigue. These fruits support the digestive process by enhancing the breakdown and absorption of nutrients, which boosts metabolism and can aid in developing healthier eating patterns and effective weight management,” said Sushma PS, chief dietitian, Jindal Naturecure Institute. Rose apples possess antihyperglycemic properties that help lower blood sugar levels, too. “Due to their low glycemic index, water apples slow the absorption of sugars into the bloodstream, helping prevent rapid spikes in blood glucose. This makes them a beneficial fruit for individuals with diabetes, who can include it in their diet as recommended by their healthcare provider,” mentioned Sushma. *In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, apple cider vinegar, honey, salt, and pepper until well combined. *In a large bowl, combine the sliced rose apples, mixed greens, cucumber, carrot, pomegranate seeds, and herbs. *Drizzle the dressing over the salad and toss gently to coat everything evenly. *Sprinkle feta cheese and nuts on top just before serving for added texture and flavour. Moreover, water apples have a positive effect on the immune system due to their rich vitamin content, including vitamin C, which is crucial for the production of white blood cells, added Sushma. How is it consumed? Common uses for unripe water apples include making pickles, jellies, or syrup. “These unripe fruits can also be enjoyed raw, typically with a dash of salt,” said Sushma. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/food-wine/watery-rose-apples-zaam-beat-summer-heat-blood-sugar-benefits-9298664/
  15. Video: Protesters block traffic in Georgia amid opposition to 'Kremlin-inspired' new law Now to Georgia, which is not directly involved in the war in Ukraine, but whose future is seen as highly significant in the context of Vladimir Putin's ambitions for Russia. Draft legislation, known as the "foreign agents" law, is winding its way through the Georgian parliament and would require organisations receiving more than 20% of their funding from abroad to register as agents of foreign influence. The proposed law has been attacked by opponents as authoritarian and Kremlin-inspired. Protesters have taken to the streets of capital Tbilisi for weeks to show their opposition, while the European Union and the United States have urged Georgiato drop the legislation or risk harming its chances of EU membership and a broader Euro-Atlantic future. The stand-off is seen as part of a wider struggle that could determine whether Georgia, a country of 3.7 million people that has experienced war and revolution since the fall of the Soviet Union, moves closer to Europe or back under Moscow's influence. Video below shows protesters in Tbilisi blocking traffic as part of their efforts to prevent the bill being passed. A regular feature of news coverage surrounding the war in Ukraine has been the frequently bellicose statements that have emanated from one of Vladimir Putin's most prominent allies, Dmitry Medvedev. The deputy chairman of the security council of the Russian Federation is notorious for his inflammatory language and repeated invocation of Cold War-style nuclear threats, which tend to be widely dismissed by most Western commentators. Indeed, some analysts have suggested the former president's penchant for such wild outbursts are specifically designed to frame himself as an erratic character who could not be considered a viable rival to Mr Putin - thus avoiding the fate of other figures considered a threat to the leader's authority. It is through that lens that many will view his latest comments, which ostensibly cover his thoughts on the Ukraine peace conference due to take place in Switzerland in June - to which Russia has not been invited. His assessment is perhaps unsurprisingly dismissive, even going as far as to imply the summit represents positive news for Moscow. "What is Russia's gain of the Swiss 'peace conference'?" he asks in his post on social media. "It's actually threefold. First, it will come as yet another proof of failure of the so-called peace plan by the halfwit zelensky (sic)." He follows that by referring to Ukraine's leader as "the bandera b******", seeking to associate him with a Ukrainian far-right leader of the mid 20th century. The Kremlin has long sought to depict Ukraine's leadership as far-right neonazis, efforts that have been widely dismissed by commentators on the region. "Second, it will be visible evidence of the full impotence of the present-day western elites, who have performed painful self-castration of their own potential to stop the military conflict," Mr Medvedev continues. "What's more, it has been done on direct orders given by a group of senile doctors from Washington. "Third, it will allow our Armed Forces to further cleanse Malorossia's [little Russia's] territories from neonazis without any hindrance and regard for some c***'s 'peace initiatives'." After forecasting "the final collapse of the former Ukraine’s political regime", he concludes: "Thank you, the land of cheese and watches!" In pictures: Russia show off captured Western military hardware at exhibition Russian officers has been welcoming foreign military attaches in Moscow today during their visit to an exhibition of Western military equipment captured from Kyiv forces during the fighting in Ukraine. The event organised by the Russian Defence Ministry features more than 30 pieces of Western-made heavy equipment, including a US-made M1 Abrams tank and a Bradley armoured fighting vehicle. More now from Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, who has been speaking to journalists this afternoon. She has said any move by Denmark to restrict the freedom of navigation of Russian ships in the Baltic straits will be seen as a hostile act and draw retaliation. It is unclear exactly what prompted the threat, but we'll bring you any more detail as we get it. Denmark has played down suggestions it will begin checking Russian tankers moving through its waters to establish whether they have the correct documentation. The country allows ships calling at Russia to use its waters due to a longstanding freedom of navigation treaty, although the country's armed forces have said it is standard procedure to track them. https://news.sky.com/story/ukraine-russia-war-latest-large-fire-as-russia-hits-port-city-with-ballistic-missile-12541713

  19. Italy’s Ministry of Health has banned “puppy yoga” classes, saying only adult dogs should take part in order to protect the health of animals as well as the safety of attendees. In a note circulated on 29 April, the ministry said it was aware that organisers often "borrow" puppies from breeders. But because puppy yoga "improves wellbeing" it should be considered as a kind of "animal assisted therapy" - which by law can only be carried out by fully grown animals. Puppy yoga typically involves puppies roaming freely around a yoga class and sometimes being incorporated in yoga poses, or a yoga class followed by playtime with the puppies. The ministry asked regional authorities to carry out checks to ensure puppy yoga classes do not take place. In a statement, Italy's National Board for Animal Protection welcomed the decision. It quoted dog expert Giusy D'Angelo as saying that puppy yoga was a "physically and mentally stressful experience" for the animals. She also said that attendees risked getting carried away and adopting the animals. "People are overtaken by a wave of emotion after experiencing sensations of well-being from the close proximity to the puppies," Ms D'Angelo said. "This can lead them to make a decision without really thinking through the implications and the consequences." She also warned the puppies used in the yoga classes are often not transported in a safe manner. Organisers sometimes do not give them enough water to drink, she said. "This type of activity is detrimental to the dogs' wellbeing and only brings financial advantages to those who run the classes," Ms D'Angelo added. Last July, the UK's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) urged people to consider alternative activities to puppy yoga. While organisers claim the puppies enjoy the socialising involved in the ancient Indian art, "there is nothing in the environment which we would consider to be beneficial to... these animals." Puppy yoga classes are po[CENSORED]r across Europe and the US. Other variations include kitten yoga, rabbit yoga or even, in some cases, goat yoga. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ckmjk7v40gko
