  9. In the past Eleganza Villa d’Este Contest, BMW showed us the Motorrad Concept R18, a prototype that takes us to another era and stands as one of the most spectacular in its history. Your exterior probably captivated you, with a chassis and a fuel tank that create a common line up to the wheel. Large-spoke wheels (21 inches front and 18 inches behind) provide a safe position and perfectly balance the unit. The tires are a reference to history, as this motorcycle is equipped with Metzeler tires. He puts the icing on the cake his Boxer engine, which marks a return to the company's roots. At the time, BMW Motorrad did not offer us just information about this mechanic baptized as Big Boxer, however, today it reveals practically all the details accompanied by an image gallery and even a video. Wrapped in a retro-style housing, the Big Boxer engine will make its production debut at the next BMW R18. This horizontally arranged two-cylinder unit is the largest capacity twin-cylinder boxer engine ever used in the production of motorcycles in series. It has a displacement of 1,802 cc as a result of a diameter of 107 mm and a stroke of 100 mm. It produces no less than 91 hp at 4,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 158 Nm at 3,000 rpm. More than 150 Nm are available between 2,000 and 4,000 laps, with a maximum engine speed of 5,750 rpm and an idle speed that has been set at 950 rpm. BMW Motorrad states that the Big Boxer engine offers enormous traction capacity, as well as exemplary smooth operation thanks to a generously sized steering wheel. The new powertrain is air / oil cooled, offers large ribbed cylinders and cylinder heads, and weighs only 110.8 kilograms, all including the six-speed gearbox and the intake system. Optionally you can equip a reverse gear driven by an electric motor. Nor is a vertically divided aluminum engine housing and a smooth triple bearing housing missing. Interestingly, the classic OHV valve drive with two camshafts is combined with modern four-valve, double-ignition technology. For the transmission, a gimbal has been repeated whose axis will be visible in the production model, as we saw in the concept, while equipping an anti-ramp hug.
  10. Jordi Casamitjana has just obtained in England a verdict that recognizes veganism as "a philosophical belief" worthy of legal protection What appeared on paper as a labor dispute, to be resolved in a court in the east of England, has resulted in a sentence of unpredictable consequences that recognizes veganism as "a philosophical belief" and deserving of legal protection. The accusation of the ruling announced on Friday was the complaint filed by Jordi Casamitjana against his dismissal from the animal organization League Against Cruel Sports, which he considers discriminatory and attributes to his radical opposition to any kind of animal exploitation. This Catalan zoologist, 55 years old and British national, explains in this interview with EL PAÍS the reasons for a campaign that had the essential support of crowdfunding. Question. The judge has determined that veganism deserves the protection of the Equality law passed in 2010 against discrimination based on race, pregnancy or sex, among others. Did you think your cause would go so far? Reply. When I was fired I didn't know the legal situation of veganism, but my lawyers explained to me that mine could be the first case of this nature and capable of operating a change in the law. After accumulating 1,400 pages of evidence, I realized that I could win, although I was still surprised that the judge failed the same day of his reading, something unusual that demonstrates the weight of the evidence Q. Vegan ethics sees its legal protection recognized in the workplace. What do you think it will mean for the thousands of employees who share their philosophy of life? A. From now on, they will feel more confident when expressing their philosophy without fear of reprisals. Many take it with discretion for fear, perhaps not to be fired, but to be treated differently. Now they know that, in case of conflict over discrimination, they can go to court. I think there will be other countries that will be inspired by my case and that, as a result, there will be much more veganism in the world and that that will benefit the millions of animals that are exploited, the environment and public health. P. Taken to the extreme, the consequences of the sentence seem unapproachable for the business. For example, if the employee refuses to work in a space with leather sofas or dispatch the meat products to the supermarket customer. A. Entrepreneurs have to realize the need to change some rules, such as including vegan options in food that uniforms do not force an employee to wear leather shoes. Actually that phenomenon when it comes to protecting a philosophy already exists in the United Kingdom. For example, if you are a Muslim who works in a store and do not want to mani[CENSORED]te non-halal meat, the law protects you from another assignment. Respecting veganism will not be a huge expense and the exaggerations that have been made respond to the fear of the unknown. We are not facing a catastrophic revolution, only in recognition of those who try to change their lives to minimize damage to animals. I think it is a value in a democratic society. P. A group of philosophers consulted by EL PAÍS has criticized that any lifestyle seeks to legitimize itself in law. What would you answer? A. That argument has philosophical value, but not legal in the United Kingdom. The English (common law) system establishes that the law is perfected through the resolution of cases that set a precedent. The Law of Equality does not limit what is or is not a philosophy because it is expected that the successive cases will clarify it. In the past it has failed in favor of environmentalism or pacifism, and against homophobia or neo-Nazism. That is, everything that is negative and pernicious does not pass the test Q. What induced you to embrace veganism and what does it mean in everyday life? A. Part of my testimony before the judge was a detailed description of the decisions I make from the time I wake up until I go to bed, what toothpaste or clothes I wear, that there is nothing in my house with an animal product and that I don't enter ... I will never have a romantic relationship with someone not vegan. That philosophy affects my whole life. I hugged her 18 years ago. I have always worked in the world of animal protection and I ended up realizing that animals are much more similar to humans than you think, but that they were treated as objects without emotions or motivations. I created a conflict, stopped eating meat and even wrote a book [The Demon's Trial, under the pseudonym J.C. Costa] that distills that guilty process.
  11. Temperatures have exceeded 40 degrees in the south of the country, with highs such as 48.9 degrees in a neighborhood of Sydney, while the wind blows hard and changing. Australia has mobilized 3,000 reservists in a new day of forest fires under "catastrophic" conditions in the southeast of the country, where two new victims have raised the number of deaths in this crisis to 23. The two new victims have died on Kangaroo Island, the third largest in the country, in the state of South Australia, where 100,000 hectares have been calcined, mostly in the Flinders Chase National Park, home to 60,000 kangaroos, 50,000 koalas and animals in danger. Thousands of Australian firefighters and reservists continue to fight, after the sun goes down, against the more than 200 active fires in the states of New South Wales and Victoria, which has razed three million hectares. At least six people remain missing in Victoria, where there are at least 50 fires in progress. The other 150 outbreaks are concentrated in the most affected state, that of New South Wales, ten of which have forced to declare the total alert in the surrounding po[CENSORED]tions. According to Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the death toll is at 23 since the fire season began in September. Twelve of them have died in the last week. "It is costing us a high price," Morrison told reporters, recalling the victims and the more than 1,500 homes that have been burned since September. Morrison has announced the deployment of reservists and the Adelaide ship to help evacuate those affected, the opening of military bases to temporarily house the victims and a departure of 20 million Australian dollars to rent four seaplanes, among other aerial means. Morrison has made the announcement after weeks of criticism for his lack of response to the fires, after encountering the rejection of neighbors in the areas affected by the flames that refused to shake his hand and insulted him. On Saturday, temperatures have exceeded 40 degrees in southern Australia, while the wind blows hard and changes direction, complicating the work of firefighters. This warm front of the last hours has exceeded all expectations. Between the winds of more than 100 kilometers per hour and the 48ºC that have been reached in localities such as Penrith, the fires have begun to behave "erratically" to the point that firefighters can only direct them to safe areas, as they have Fire sources explained to The Guardian newspaper.
