  2. Nominet has released a new report showing that a number of .UK domains have looked to exploit the coronavirus pandemic to commit criminal activity this year. With plenty of misinformation being shared in relation to the crisis, cybercriminals are clearly looking to take advantage. In response to the Covid-19 crisis, Nominet has looked to increase checks on new domain registrations. In the year leading up to October 28, the firm placed 3,811 domains related to Covid-19 on hold at the point of registration pending further registrant checks. Of these, 1,568 have now passed due diligence, while eight domains suspended for criminal activity were related to Covid-19. Covid crime Despite the efforts of cybercriminals to exploit the pandemic, 2020 has been a good year, in general, for Nominet and law enforcement officials with regard to rogue domain registrations. The number of .UK domains suspended following requests by law enforcement agencies between November 1, 2019, and October 31, 2020, was 22,158, a decrease from the 28,937 detailed in the previous report. Phishing is on the rise, however. Nominet’s anti-phishing initiative saw 5,006 domains suspended over the twelve-month period, nearly double the number compared to the previous year. Once again, the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to a huge rise in remote working, is probably the root cause of the increase. “New anxieties are a bounty for cybercriminals who look to take advantage of others online for their own gains, not least by exploiting the pandemic,” Russell Haworth, Nominet CEO, said. “This year, we proactively sought to weed out coronavirus-related domains registered for criminal intent and had put on hold almost 4,000 by the end of October. With less than half passing the due diligence we require to reinstate them, it’s clearly helping keep scams at bay.”

  3. GeIL today rook the wraps off its new series of Orion RGB RAM for gamers. The sticks, which come in both standard and AMD-targeted flavors, flashes an identical aluminum heat spreader as GeIL's Orion series but adds in RGB goodness. According to GeIL, the AMD version is "engineered for AMD Ryzen platform to deliver exceptional compatibility and performance." GeIL specifically points to the new Ryzen 5000 CPUs. Despite the addition of the RGB light bar, the Orion RGB RAM has a low-profile design, just like the Orion RAM kits. With a height of 38mm (1.5 inches), the memory module shouldn't encounter any compatibility problems with big CPU air coolers. In terms of RGB, the Orion RGB is compatible with the major motherboard RGB ecosystems, such as Asus Aura Sync, Gigabyte RGB Fusion 2.0, MSI Mystic Light Sync, ASRock Polychrome Sync and Biostar RGB Sync. You can find the Orion RGB as single modules, dual-and quad-channel packages. The dual-channel presentation maxes out at 64GB (2x 32GB). Meanwhile, the quad-channel presentation offers capacities 128GB (4x 32GB). Competing against the best RAM, GeIL's marketing focuses on the Orion RGB's diverse selection of frequencies that starts from DDR4-2666 and goes up to DDR4-4400. CAS latency timings range from 16 to 22, and operating voltages vary from 1.2V to 1.45V, depending on the frequency. All Orion RGB memory modules are tested with GeIL's DYNA 4 SLT tester and come with a limited lifetime warranty. They also support the XMP 2.0 standard, so owners can quickly setup their systems with a single click inside the motherboard's firmware. GeIL didn't reveal the pricing for the memory kits, however, the Orion RGB memory will be in stores in the middle of December.

  7. Mazda’s move into the premium space isn’t coming without casualties. The company’s Mazdaspeed performance brand is dead, and a move upmarket likely means we’ll see higher prices, too. However, repositioning the Japanese brand may pay dividends as the company prepares the next-generation Mazda CX-5. A new report says the crossover will ride on the company’s new rear-wheel-drive platform and receive six-cylinder engines. The report arrives from BestCarWeb.jp (translated), and it corroborates a report from earlier this summer that hinted that the model would be receiving inline-six engines. The new report says the next-gen CX-5, which could be on par with the Mercedes GLC and BMW X5, will share Mazda’s new rear-wheel-drive platform with the next-gen Mazda6 sedan, and we know the company is developing new inline-six engines for it. Those mills, possibly 3.0- and 3.3-liter engines, should make their way under the CX-5’s new hood. Gallery: 2019 Mazda CX-5 Long Term: This summer’s earlier report also suggested that Mazda would retire the CX-5 nameplate in favor of CX-50, though BestCarWeb.jp counters that, saying that the CX-50 will be a coupe-like version of the CX-5 and could join the lineup. The CX-5 and CX-50 could follow a similar path as the recently revealed CX-30, with Mazda making room for the CX-30 between the CX-3 and CX-5. The company could do something similar for the CX-50, positioning it above the CX-5 and below the much larger CX-9. More crossovers and SUVs wouldn’t hurt. There’ve been reports that Mazda won’t reveal any new models through March 2022, which means we could be waiting a while before seeing any new Mazda products. We know there’s a new Mazda6 in development alongside several new powertrains. While the next 18 months will feel empty without a new Mazda, we expect the company’s absence to deliver some pleasant surprises. The brand continues to stand out with an emphasis on design and performance, and a move upmarket should increase that focus.

  8. Zyxel has confirmed a security vulnerability that affects its firewalls and VPN access points. The security bug has been classified as critical, although patches have now been released. “A stack-based buffer overflow in fbwifi_continue.cgi on Zyxel UTM and VPN series of gateways running firmware version V4.30 through to V4.55 allows remote unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted http packet,” an update posted to the National Vulnerability Database read. The buffer overflow vulnerability can be mani[CENSORED]ted through an unknown input and leads to memory corruption issues that could have an impact on the privacy, integrity, and availability of a victim’s device. The bug is being tracked as CVE-2020-25014 and is reportedly easy to exploit – although technical details of how this takes place are currently unknown. Patches available : The Zyxel products that are affected by the vulnerability all support the Facebook Wi-Fi feature. As a result, Zyxel has issued patches for all the relevant products that remain within their warranty and support periods. It is advised that users install updates as soon as possible and get in contact with their local Zyxel support team if they require further assistance. This is not the first time that a company offering security services has found itself patching its own vulnerabilities. Last week, cybersecurity firm Sophos revealed that it was the victim of a data breach that may have compromised sensitive information for a small number of customers. Earlier this month, Zyxel announced the launch of two new firewalls, the USG FLEX 100W and USG FLEX 700 as well as new firmware ZLD 4.60. It seems as though the recently discovered security flaw affects earlier versions of the Zyxel firmware, which demonstrates how important it is to install the latest updates for all software solutions

  9. If you've got or are planning to build an AMD Ryzen desktop with a B550 or X570 motherboard, you can take advantage of the speed of PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs. These Gen 4 SSDs can read and write thousands of MBps faster than even the fastest PCIe 3.0 SSD, but normally they come at a high premium. For example, Samsung's 980 PRO costs a whopping $229 for 1TB. However, today, you can get one of our favorite PCIe 4.0 SSDs, the Sabrent Rocket Q4 for just $149 for 1TB. That's a $65 discount, its lowest price ever and one of the best Cyber Monday SSD deals around. The Sabrent Rocket is rated for an impressive 5,000 MBps sequential reads and 4,400 MBps sequential writes. Plus, it's joined by several other Sabrent sales today. We published a review of the Sabrent Rocket SSD a few months ago and gave it our Editor's Choice award for its speedy performance and power efficiency. Though we tested the 2TB capacity, it's rated for the same speeds as the 1TB capacity so they should perform similarly. In our tests, the Sabrent rocket copied 100GB of files faster than any of its direct competitors and read a 15GB movie quicker than them also. It had the lowest latency on PC Mark 10 of any drive but the super-expensive Intel Optane SSD 905. We were also really impressed by the software package that comes with the Sabrent Rocket. You get a free copy of Acronis True Image for cloning and backup, along with Sabrent's Control Panel application and Size Converter (for changing sector sizes). The drive has a strong 1800 TBW endurance too. 10. Actual medieval history is great and all, but let’s be honest – a whole load of nerds, myself included, are more knowledgeable about Middle-earth and Westeros than historical Europe. Luckily, the Crusader Kings 3 total conversion mods are starting to arrive, including The Lord of Rings: Realms of Exile, which eventually aims to make all of Middle-earth playable. The first release of Realms of Exile focuses on three factions and playable leaders. Those include King Theoden of Rohan and Saruman of Isengard, but the factions also include Wulfgar Brynjarsson of Dunland, originally created in the Age of the Ring mod for Battle for Middle-earth. (Mod universes are apparently colliding!) This first release starts in the year 3000 of the Third Age, which is shortly before Bilbo’s birthday party in the early part of Lord of the Rings. The focus is on the Riders of Rohan as they’re beset by both bandits and the forces of Saruman – but, of course, this is Crusader Kings, so you can take any faction in any direction. I assume that includes seducing Saruman and building a horse-orc empire that prevents the War of the Ring from ever happening. The mod is available on both Paradox Plaza and the Steam Workshop.

  11. The Dacia brand clearly means many different things to those in the automotive space. To some, it’s the spiritual home of the good news bit from Top Gear, while to others it signifies an automaker committed to producing dependable and honest cars for the masses. Regardless of which position you fancy, the Romanian automaker is planning a new car. Marc Suss, boss of Dacia products, understands that the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) form factor is no longer as po[CENSORED]r as it once was. With a transition to the SUV, this leads to the demise of the Lodgy – a Dacia minivan that dates back to 2012. For a manufacturer that prides itself on simple and reliable vehicles, the new 7-seat concept certainly sets itself apart from the crowd. Apart from being the first Dacia hybrid, it will be based on the underpinnings of the Sandero. Along with its new powerplant, it also carries a myriad of safety features like automatic emergency braking, blind-spot detectors, hill start assist, an electric parking brake, and many others. Available under the hood will be a 1.6-liter hybrid powerplant which will put out around 140 horsepower (104.3 kilowatts). With proven reliability under the hood of the Renault Clio, the engine will feature a less complicated hybrid system to keep costs down – it looks like it won’t be able to recover energy during braking. Apart from Dacia’s first foray into hybrid vehicles, it’s equally big news that there won’t be a diesel option. Semantics aside, it’s good to see the Romanian automaker sticking to its simple ethos, even as they are set to release one of their most advanced vehicles yet. Scheduled to debut in mid-2021, it will be interesting to see how it performs when it hits the showroom.

  13. Nvidia (via Notebookcheck) is giving away a GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition as part of a Holiday contest. The latest render of the mid-range Ampere graphics card raises one big question: Has Nvidia decided to kill off the 12-pin PCIe power connector? Theoretically, the 12-pin PCIe power connector opens up the possibility for a maximum power delivery up to 648W. From the beginning, the connector was already a bit of overkill since no modern graphics card sips that much power. Even AMD's infamous Radeon R9 295X2, rated with a 500W TDP, didn't come close to 648W. Nvidia's choice of a 12-pin connector for the RTX 3070 was probably unnecessary. However, the connector makes sense on more power-hungry models, such as the RTX 3080 or RTX 3090, to reduce cable clutter and simplify the compact board design. The GeForce RTX 3070 has a 220W TDP and debuted with the 12-pin PCIe power connector. Given the modest TDP, the graphics card could function just fine with a single 8-pin PCIe power connector. It's no surprise that Nvidia itself even included a 12-pin to 8-pin adapter with the Founders Edition. Power supply vendors also provided their own adapters free of charge. Nvidia's latest tweet hints at a potential change in the power connector configuration on the GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition. The swap would allow the chipmaker to sell the graphics card without an adapter. This might even slightly increase the profit on a GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition, although we don't know how much the adapter costs to produce. Despite the tweeted image, the GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition product page still shows renders of the graphics card with a 12-pin connector. Shortages of the GeForce RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 are expected to persist until next year, and the RTX 3070 is sold out everywhere, too. It might be an opportune time for Nvidia to revamp the PCIe power connector. At any rate, we've reached out to Nvidia for comment.

  14. As we all eagerly await the Cyberpunk 2077 release date, here’s a mod that turns Serious Sam 3 into a cyberpunk game. The full conversion mod transforms the FPS game into a survival game based in the world of Blade Runner. Set in the 2020s Los Angeles of the movies, Blade Runner: Cells Interlinked 2021 follows Trixie, a prototype replicant, and Ren, a lowly Tyrell Corp technician, as they try to escape the city after Trixie escapes her laboratory. Chased by two rival corporations, blade runners, and the police, the two have to navigate the dystopian neon nightmare in the hopes of eventually finding freedom. So far, so Blade Runner. A trailer for the project shows off the impressive looking alt-future LA, featuring voice-over from the actors playing Trixie and Ren. The snippets of gunplay have this closer to a stealth game than the usual bombast of Serious Sam, featuring tight corridors, small rooms and so on. Sure enough, the description on Steam from creator Syndroid says “Don’t expect Serious Sam type of gameplay”. Around 90% of what’s here is custom content, and the whole thing lasts around 90 minutes to two hours. Although a fangame, the creator does place this within the Blade Runner timeline, taking place before Black Out 2022, an animated short film that was part of a series of preludes leading to Blade Runner 2029. This puts it two years after the first film, and right before the replicant ban that brings us through to 2049 is imposed. No doubt there’s plenty of references and nods here to satisfy diehards for the universe. Here’s the trailer: You can get Serious Sam 3 BFE on Steam here. Our Ian Boudreau reviewed Serious Sam 4 and loved it, so do check that out if you want more pure Sam action.

  18. Here's yet another automotive startup that aims to build an extremely niche, low-volume hyper machine with crazy amounts of power. Say hello to UK-based Naran Automotive and its new car, imaginatively called the Naran. Yes, we sound a bit snarky but that's because Naran is actually a bit different than other wide-eyed startups these days. And that's a good thing. For starters, this car isn't following the hybrid or all-electric trends we're seeing from so many other young companies. The Naran packs a gasoline-burning 5.0-liter V8 engine, nestled in front of the driver though it's back far enough to be considered a front-mid-engine design. Naran Automotive says the engine is a bespoke creation from Racing Dynamics, and with the help of two turbochargers it generates a claimed 1,062 horsepower (781 kilowatts). An all-wheel-drive system sends power front and rear, and with the skinny pedal planted, Naran says the car will hit 60 mph under three seconds and top out over 230 mph. Gallery: Naran Automotive Naran Power isn't the sole focus for Naran, however. The car seeks to offer a GT3-style experience for the driver and passengers, and a motorsport-inspired double-wishbone suspension with adjustable everything is a big part of that. You won't find electric power steering either – it's handled by a race-spec hydraulic rack, and carbon ceramic brakes will keep things under control. To that end, the Naran's aero package generates no less than 3,036 pounds (1,377 kilograms) of downforce. That should also help keep things under control at speed. All in all, these are big claims for a brand-new startup to make but the company does have some experience to draw from. The lead designer is Jowyn Wong, the same person responsible for the Apollo IE and De Tomaso P72. On the mechanical side, EY3 Engineering is bringing all the parts together and Daniel Mense, who worked on the record-setting Nio EP9, is overseeing everything. Also, the Naran isn't completely scratch built – the monocoque comes from the BMW 8 Series so if you see familiarity in the design, that's why. That's also why Naran isn't just building a race car, but something with luxury touches and a wide range of customization. How wide? Naran's press release doesn't go into detail, but the company does say each of the 49 production cars will be tailored to the individual tastes of buyers. Included in that will be a bespoke name for each car, which is why it's presently known as simply Naran. So yeah, Naran is doing things a bit differently. Among other things, the company already has an actual studio car as opposed to renderings we often see from startups, and plans are in place for an official debut early next year. There's no mention of price, but if the car achieves all the metrics described here, you know it won't be cheap.

  19. Thianksgiving is set to be saved after Zoom announced it will temporarily lift its 40-minute call limit in a bid to support users unable to be with their families. While paying users of the video conferencing service are not subject to any call duration restrictions, users of the free Zoom service are usually restricted to 40-minute sessions, which could make for stilted Thanksgiving celebrations. As announced via Twitter, however, Zoom will remove this time limit for all users from 00:01am ET on Thanksgiving Day (November 26) until 06:00am the following day. Zoom video conferencing time-limit While no one’s idea of a perfect Thanksgiving involves dialling into a family video conference, with travel and close contact inadvisable (and in some places outlawed) due to the coronavirus pandemic, the gesture could help make the day feel at least a little more normal. As the pandemic has progressed, Zoom - and video conferencing in general - has grown from a predominantly business-centric tool to become a service millions rely upon to maintain personal relationships too. Since March, quick check-ins, family reunions, birthday parties and more have all been held over video conference. Zoom quizzes became the chosen medium (albeit fleetingly) for socializing with friends - and there were even a few Zoom weddings. Identifying this growing trend, Zoom even launched its own AirBnB-style virtual events marketplace - called OnZoom. The service gives Zoom customers a centralized platform on which to market, monetize and host any kind of online event, from fitness classes to piano tutorials and comedy shows. Delimiting conference calls might appear an insignificant gesture on the part of Zoom, but in the world in which we’re currently living, the ability to interact freely with others using the technology at our disposal is vital. With recent spikes in infection casting a shadow over Christmas celebrations too, it remains to be seen whether Zoom will extend the same kindness come December.
