Microsoft is working on an update for Outlook that will bring email-based communication closer in line with interactions over instant messaging and social media apps. As per an entry in the company’s product roadmap, Outlook users will soon be given a range of options for reacting to an email, beyond simply replying with a message of their own. “Outlook on the web is expanding the existing ability to like email messages with a thumbs up icon. In addition to likes, users will be able to add sentiment for love, laughter, celebration, thanks or show sadness,” explained Microsoft. The feature is currently under development, but is expected to land at some point in March, initially for the Outlook web app only. Microsoft Outlook update The informalization of email communication is reasonable in some respects, because email is used in personal and professional contexts alike, and business users can always just ignore the feature. However, with the rise of instant messaging and social media, email has become much more of a business-first medium, especially for younger generations now entering the workplace. With remote working already driving a wedge between co-workers, making communication more challenging and misunderstandings more likely, yet another way to distil meaning into a simplified format is surely the last thing we need. The problem with the inability to communicate with someone face-to-face is that nuances related to tone, body language and facial expression are lost. Encouraging email users to use icons as a proxy for words will only add fuel to this fire. It’s not that social media-style interactions have no place in business; they have become a defining feature of platforms such as Slack. But one of the main reasons collaboration tools haven’t killed off email, as some predicted they would, is that the inbox is the last bastion of purely functional and transactional communication. TechRadar Pro put these thoughts to Microsoft over email, but the company has not yet returned a response. Some users will feel more strongly about the new Outlook reactions feature than others; perhaps it will be entirely harmless. However, the feature might also serve as a timely reminder of the unique selling point of email: it’s boring.

Starship Troopers is a strange license. The book is considered a classic in science-fiction literature, but the original film is the real gem and one of the finest things ever to have graced the earth. Don’t at me. Later films have been inconsistent, but there’s not been much in the videogame world especially in the land of strategy games. The most notable release was Starship Troopers: Terran Ascendancy back in 2000. It was a tactical RTS game that was certainly fun, but a bit rough around the edges even by the standards of the time. Towards the end of 2019 we were told that Slitherine are working on a Starship Troopers game of their own called Starship Troopers: Terran Command. It’s another real-time tactical romp featuring a single-player campaign inspired by the original film spanning 21 missions. You will take part in the iconic attack on Klendathu, but spend most of your time on a new planet called Kwalasha created specifically for the game. You must take charge of the military forces on this vital outpost, and defend it from a growing Arachnid threat. To help set the scene, here’s a new gameplay trailer:

German publication Igor's Lab has nailed a world-exclusive look at Intel's DG1 discrete graphics card. The chipmaker showcased the DG1 last year at CES 2020, running Warframe, but Intel's entry-level Iris Xe development graphics cards are exclusively available to system integrators and OEMs. In fact, Intel has put up some barriers in place to make sure that the DG1 only works on a handful of selected systems. Therefore, you really can't just rip out the DG1 from an OEM system and test the graphics card on another PC. After analyzing the images, the teardown helps explain why. Wallossek managed to get his hands on a complete OEM system with the original DG1 SDV (Software Development Vehicle). In order to protect his sources, Igor only shared the basic specifications of the system, which includes a Core i7 non-K processor and a Z390 mini-ITX motherboard. First up, let's look at why the card won't work on most motherboards. Intel has limited support for the card to a handful of OEM systems and motherboard chipsets, sparking speculation about why the company isn't selling the cards on the broader retail market. It turns out there's a plausible technical explanation. Hardware-hacker Cybercat 2077 (@0xCats) recently tweeted out (below) that the DG1 cards lack the EEPROM chip that holds the firmware, largely because they were originally designed for laptops and don't have the SPI lines required for connection. These EEPROM chips are present on the eXG310 cards for data centers that use the same graphics engines, but as we can see in the naked PCB shot from Igor's Lab above, those same chips aren't present on the DG1 board. According to Cybercat 2077, that means the card's firmware has to be stored on the motherboard, hence the limited compatibility. The DG1 SDV reportedly features a DirectX 12 chip produced with Intel's 10nm SuperFin process node and checks in with 96 Execution Units (EUs), which amounts to 768 shaders. That's 20% more shaders than the cut-down version that Asus and other partners will offer. The DG1 features 8GB of LPDDR4 memory with a 2,133 MHz clock speed. The memory is reportedly connected to a 128-bit memory interface and supports PCIe 4.0, although it's limited to x8 speeds. At idle, the graphics card runs at 600 MHz with a power consumption of 4W. The fans spin up to 850 RPM and keep the graphics card relatively cool at 30 degrees Celsius. With a full load, the clock speed jumps up to 1,550 MHz, and the power consumption scales to 20W. In terms of thermals, the graphics card's operating temperature got to 50 degrees Celsius with the fan spinning at 1,800 RPM. Wallossek thinks that the DG1's total power draw should be between 27W to 30W. The DG1 is equipped with a light alloy cover with a single 80mm PWM cooling fan and an aluminum heatsink underneath. Design-wise, the DG1 leverages a two-phase power delivery subsystem that consists of a buck controller and one PowerStage for each phase. The Xe GPU is surrounded by four 2GB Micron LPDDR4 memory chips. Given the low power consumption, the DG1 draws what it needs from the PCIe slot alone and doesn't depend on any PCIe power connectors. Display outputs include one HDMI 2.1 port and three DisplayPort outputs. However, Wallossek noted that while you can get an image from the HDMI port, it causes system instability. He thinks that the firmware and driver prevent you from establishing a direct connection with the DG1, which explains why Intel recommends using the motherboard display outputs instead. The DG1 in Wallossek's hands is a test sample. Despite the many driver updates, the graphics card is still finicky, and its display outputs are unusable. The DG1's performance should be right in the alley of Nvidia's GeForce GT 1030, but there are no benchmarks or tests to support this claim. Wallossek couldn't provide any, either. Apparently, benchmarks simply crash the system, or they end up in an infinite loop. Wallossek could only get AIDA64's GPGPU benchmark to budge, but that doesn't really tell us anything meaningful about graphics performance.

Steam’s latest hit is a Chinese RPG game that’s launched to an immediately receptive audience. Tale of Immortal, out less than a week, has already gathered almost 100,000 concurrent players at its peak. Developed published by Lightning Games, Tale of Immortal is an open-world game based around Chinese mythology. Starting as a mortal warrior, you gradually ascend towards becoming a deity of some form or other, making particular choices depending on how you want to resolve things and build your character. It’s in Early Access right now, offering six chapters, and the full version is due in about a year, according to the Steam page. Where Tale of Immortal stands out, however, is that it’s currently only available on Valve’s store in Chinese, meaning many of these players are from China itself. This is the second Chinese-language game to make a splash on Steam this month, following strategy game House of the Three Kingdoms 8, which topped at around 25,000 players a couple of weeks ago. But what separates the two is Tale of Immortal’s available everywhere, whereas Three Kingdoms 8 is China-only. Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad points out that China now accounts for a quarter of Steam’s users, and the success of both games goes against the general buying habits for Chinese players.

With more employees working remotely over the past year, adoption and usage of online collaboration software such as Google Workspace has skyrocketed as these tools allow teams to work together no matter where in the world they are. However, work-life balance has been severely disrupted as a result of the transition to working from home. For this reason, companies such as Microsoft have introduced features such as Teams' virtual commute to help employees separate their work from their home life. Now Google is following suit with a new feature in Google Docs that will make it easier for collaborators to know whether their co-workers are available. Out of office information When replying to or mentioning another person in a comment, Google Docs users will now see their out of office (OOO) information. If someone mentions a single user in a new comment or thread, they will see the OOO banner as well as information on when they plan to return to the office. In multi-person threads though, users will see condensed out of office information though they can select the info icon to view more information on each specific person. According to a new post on the Google Workspace Updates blog, neither admins nor end users will need to take any action to begin using this feature in Google Docs. For those who want to start using this feature, all you have to do is create an out of office event in Google Calendar and then share your calendar with co-workers by clicking on the three dots menu and heading to the “Settings and sharing” menu.

A mysterious system packing a Core i9-10910 Comet Lake CPU and a (currently unheard of) AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT with 65GB of RAM has been spotted on an Ashes of the Singularity benchmark score. All data indicates this system could possibly be a prototype for the next generation iMac from Apple. We've already covered the Core i9-10910 several months ago; this processor is rumored to be exclusively sold to Apple. The CPU features 8 cores, 16 threads, a base frequency of 3.6 GHz, and a max turbo boost of 5 GHz flat. The 10910 also includes a configurable TDP of 95W-125W which further proves this CPU is targeted towards compact systems, like an iMac. The Core i9-10910 is roughly 10% faster than its closest brother, the Core i9-10900 according to known Geekbench 5 results of the CPU. What's interesting about this benchmark score is the GPU used in the system, a Radeon Pro RX 5700 XT. This is the first we've heard of such a GPU, so we wouldn't be surprised if this is another Mac exclusive, presumably for the new iMac. If we had to guess, the Radeon Pro 5700 XT is simply a Pro model of the 5700 XT with a lower TDP. For benchmark results, the Core i9-10910 system scored an average frame rate of 41.7; however, the specific resolution used is unknown so we don't have enough data to make an accurate comparison with another GPU. So yes, this system could genuinely be a prototype for one of Apple's new iMacs; all the evidence points to it. However, we do have contradicting info that Apple will feature its new M1ARM-based chips in the unit instead. Presumably, this means Apple will launch two different versions of the iMac, one with Intel silicon, and the other with Apple's M1 chips.

What happens when you combine a great puzzle game with the perfect puzzle game? You get Puyo Puyo Tetris, an absolutely delightful peanut butter and chocolate-style combination, which managed to make both Puyo Puyo and Tetris even better with a wide array of both standard and combo modes. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 followed that up on consoles last year with even more content, and now that sequel is finally coming to PC, too. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 hits Steam on March 23, 2021. In a press release, Sega says that the Steam version will come with “even more game features, additional characters, and other exciting new content” – likely meaning things like the boss raid mode and Sonic the Hedgehog character that were recently added to all versions of the game in free updates. There’ll be a limited-time Steam launch edition with some additional rare item cards to give you an early boost. If solid versions of both Puyo Puyo and Tetris weren’t enough for you, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 mashes them up in modes that have you swapping back and forth between games, or even putting both types of pieces on a single board. It’s got an RPG-style adventure mode, loads of multiplayer options, tutorials, replays, and more. Listen, I just really like Puyo Puyo Tetris. I haven’t gotten to play 2 yet but I’m excited about it. You should be too.

In 2003, the Bentley Continental GT marked a major transition for the British brand as its first product to ride on a platform shared with Volkswagen Group products. It turned out to be a massive success. A recently completed Conti GT V8 in Orange Flame set the milestone of the company completing 80,000 units. Bentley collected a few special versions of the Continental GT to commemorate the achievement. The family gathering included the first production-spec Conti GT to roll off the line. The company has kept it taxed and tested in its fleet. Gallery: Bentley Continental GT 80,000 Production Milestone There was also a first-gen Continental Supersports, which was a sporty variant that Bentley unveiled in 2009. It had a 6.0-liter W12 pumping out 621 horsepower (463 kilowatts) and could reach 204.4 miles per hour (329 kilometers per hour). The company included some of the record-setting and racing models. For example, the grand tourer earned a speed record on ice in 2007 by going 199.86 mph (321.65 kph) on a frozen section of the sea off the coast of Finland. There have been two generations of GT3 race cars with victories that include a win at the 2020 12 Hours of Bathurst in Australia. Plus, the Bentley earned a Production Class record at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2019. A Conti GT also competed in a round of the 2020 Ice Race GT in Zell Am See, Austria. Rounding out the display, there was a second-gen Continental GT V8 S in the color Jetstream. Finally, a Dragon Red convertible from the current press fleet was there. Bentley says there are 17 billion ways a customer could specify the current Continental GT. This is mostly because of the huge number of paint, trim, and upholstery options that the company offers.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is now a game which, broadly speaking, people like. (If you somehow just dropped in from 2017, boy, we have got a lot to talk about.) It was recently given away for free on the Epic Games Store, a giveaway which proved so po[CENSORED]r that the servers pretty much went all Death-Star-at-the-end-of-A-New-Hope, and now we know exactly how many people grabbed it. EA says that over 19 million players picked up Battlefront 2 as part of the promotion. Yeah, people like free PC games and all, but that’s an absolutely absurd number of players to be in for the promotion in just a single week. (For a rough comparison, The Sims 4 has had around 30 million players over its lifetime.) This is, at least, a pretty solid idea of how po[CENSORED]r things other than Fortnite can get on Epic’s launcher. Despite the new po[CENSORED]rity, EA reaffirms that the game has already had its “final content drop”. Last year, along with that last update, DICE said it was moving on from Battlefront in order to focus on the next Battlefield game. EA is still making Star War games, but under the new Lucasfilm Games initiative, Disney is expanding its licensing deal to allow Ubisoft to make a big, open-world Star Wars title. More than 19M PLAYERS got #StarWarsBattlefrontII from the Epic Game Store promo!🤯Thank you so much for the continued support, even after our final content drop! We’ll watch your careers with great interest! May the Force be with you, troopers! https://twitter.com/EAStarWars/status/1353802773905760256/video/1 Battlefront 2 is now available for purchase on Epic (or Steam, or Origin), if you feel like you’re missing out.

Windows 10’s next feature update will be a minor affair (once again), as the rumor mill has previously suggested, except this time we’ve glimpsed some hard evidence in a new (preview) patch for the OS. Although even so, we should be careful not to get carried away and take this for granted, until Microsoft actually confirms that this is the case. The evidence in question was found by Deskmodder.de (as highlighted by Bleeping Computer), after installing the January 2021 KB4598291 cumulative update preview (in other words, it’s in testing – this hit the Windows Insider ‘release’ channel last week). Prodding around inside the build (version 19042.782), in the Registry, Deskmodder found what’s called an enablement package, with the name: ‘Microsoft-Windows-21H1Enablement-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~0.0.0.0’. This seemingly confirms that the 21H1 update, meaning the update due to land in the first half of 2021, will be triggered by an enablement switch, just like the previous October 2020 Update. In other words, the changes in the update – which will only be minor ones – are preloaded to the PC, and when the time comes for the update to go live, it’s just a simple matter of flicking that enablement switch. There’s no big download or fuss, the update is basically just straight there. Unprecedented move It’s unusual – in fact, unprecedented – for Microsoft to make back-to-back updates minor ones like this. Previously, we have seen a pattern of a major feature update, followed by a minor one, but it seems that’s changing this year; theoretically because the huge alterations happening to Windows 10 (including a major interface revamp) won’t be ready until later in 2021. As the most recent update was just a minor one, folks upgrading from the May 2020 Update before that will have a lightweight enablement update process, as well. But if you’re running a version of Windows 10 prior to 2020, the 21H1 update will require a full download process to upgrade (as the groundwork won’t be in place with those versions). As Bleeping Computer points out, the appearance of KB4598291 and the enablement switch in testing now raises the possibility that we could see the 21H1 update rolling out in the near future – maybe in April, or even in March potentially, so theoretically in not much more than a month.
