China plans to try and curb excessive borrowing and clamp down on fraud by making large tech companies share their consumer loan data. According to a report by Reuters, the move is being seen as a reversal of the Chinese government’s previously lax approach to dealing with the industry. Major tech companies that run large internet e-commerceplatforms have traditionally kept the data under wraps, allowing them to operate unhindered while luring in new customers. Now though the Chinese regulators that include the central bank are attempting to get tech company loan data channeled through the country’s credit agencies. If successful the move will allow the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) to monitor lending risks more closely using the agencies, which are run by the central bank. Beijing is growing increasingly keen to monitor technology firms, especially those involved in the financial sector. Here's our list of the best UK tax software around We've built a list of the best billing and invoicing software on the market Check out our list of the best US tax software around The change in attitude is seen as an effective way to curb empire building by tech giants, with the clampdown already producing the collapse of fintech company Ant's IPO last November. Regulators followed that by launching an antitrust probe into Ant’s former parent company Alibaba, which resulted in changes to lending rules. Service fees : Ant currently has access to the data of over 1 billion people along with 80 million merchants, as well as running Sesame Credit, which is one of the country’s largest private credit-rating platforms. The business takes so-called technology service fees of the interest on loans, which are arranged from information it gives to around 100 banks. China plans a similar clampdown on other tech giants including Tencent and JD.com, which run relatively small consumer-credit operations compared to the Ant operation. Nevertheless, Tencent’s WeBank runs Weilidai, a micro-loans unit that has produced loans worth more than 3.7 trillion yuan up to the end of 2019. Meanwhile, JD.com has a fintech arm called JD Digits that has a combined 70 million annual active users who use its two platforms Baitiao and Jintiao. As a result, technology service fees amounted to 4.4 billion yuan for the first half of 2020 alone, highlighting the substantial lending power of this area of China’s fintech industry.

Intel's CES livestream included plenty of new chips to chew over, including new Rocket Lake and Tiger Lake models, but the company held out one teaser for the end - a quick demo of an Alder Lake-S system. During the keynote, Intel also announced that its 10nm Ice Lake processors, which have experienced a seemingly-unending string of delays, are finally in production. Intel's Alder Lake-S demo wasn't much – the company simply showed the system running an air-cooled processor as it played a video. We can also see two DRAM sticks in the system, which according to the latest information on the chips, should be the first chips to support DDR5. The system was clearly running the Windows operating system, which is an important step in the development process: Alder Lake-S is the first x86 hybrid architecture, which merges both larger and smaller cores, for the mainstream desktop. That presents both software and operating system challenges that require dedicated support for hybrid architectures. Intel's Alder Lake-S architecture features a design reminiscent of ARM's big.LITTLE, with the larger Golden Cove cores used primarily for high-priority work, while the smaller Atom Gracemont cores execute less-intensive tasks and background workloads. Aside from mentioning that the chips come with the 10nm SuperFin process, Intel didn't share any new details about the design. Intel says these chips will come to market in the second half of the year. Intel also announced that its 10nm third-gen Xeon Scalable Ice Lake server processors have finally entered production, and that the chips are being ramped for volume production. This announcement comes after a long string of delays; the chips were originally pegged for launch in 2020, signaling problems with Intel's 10nm process. "The last thing I'd say about the execution as we exit the year – we launched the Ice Lake server product, qualified it at the end of the year, and started production of the Third-Gen Xeon Scalable processors. We are ramping [production] in the first quarter." Swan's comments on Ice Lake's launch probably refer to early shipments to members of the Super Seven (hyperscalers), like Amazon, Google, and Facebook, which traditionally occurs before official launch announcements. Intel recently detailed the Ice Lake architecture during the recent Hot Chips event and will formally announce the lineup in the coming months.

Here is our first glimpse at the development of the next-gen Ford Ranger. To paraphrase the reaction of the Motor1.com team, the images don't show a lot while actually revealing quite a bit. The vertical orientation for the headlights is the most striking design change to the front. The styling immediately evokes the refreshed 2021 F-150. They even appear to share running lights occupying the upper and outer edges of the lamps. Gallery: 2023 Ford Ranger Spy Photos The rest of the truck's face is under layers of camouflage and concealment. Don't expect the vertical split in the center of the grille like what's on this pickup. The lower fascia is similarly hidden other than the fog lights in the corners. The camouflaged Ranger in these shots has a slight resemblance to an alleged leak from 2019 (above). Maybe those shots really were a good hint at what to expect from the final product. The profile showcases the blunter front end than the current Ranger. The lines for the cab appear rounder and less crisp than what's on the new F-150. The development team even takes the step of hiding the door handles under flaps. The rear offers a glimpse of the lamps that have the taillight section illuminated at the top. Judging by these images, the brake lights seem to occupy the lower area. The camouflage hides the rest of the tailgate's design. A single circular exhaust pipe comes out of the passenger side. Mechanically, Ford is engineering the Ranger to be a product that works globally, and the next-gen VW Amarok is getting the same platform. There's a rumor that the Ranger might get a new plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 10-speed automatic. In addition, markets outside the US would have diesel engine options. Currently, we expect the new Ranger and Amarok to debut in 2022. The For pickup would then go on sale for the US in the 2023 model year.

When Apple unveiled major privacy upgrades at the WWDC 2020 for its iOS14, a battle royale broke out between the tech giant and Facebook. The social media giant claimed user data was critical to its ability to serve relevant ads and that Apple's policies would stymie small business. As the world now grapples with Facebook's privacy changes that require users to compulsorily share their Whatsapp data with the social media platform, Apple's privacy labels update all but confirms what we always knew. That, data collected by Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger is far in excess of what its competitors do. Having announced the upgrades in September, Apple had confirmed that the new policy would be actively enforced only from early 2021. We are committed to ensuring users can choose to allow or disallow apps to track them, a developer note from Apple had said, while clarifying that developers had till early 2021 to make adequate changes to their apps. Though a specific date for implementing the new privacy regime isn't known yet, Apple's new privacy labels update suggests that messaging apps owned by Facebook were collecting more usage data and location details than competitors such as Signal and Telegram. Both Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp collected data that was way more than Telegram and Signal, which is why we suggested these alternatives. (Image credit: 9to5Mac)The details made available on App Store, though an image shared by 9to5Mac clearly indicates the quantum of user data that Facebook's messenger apps acquire, compared to rivals. In fact, the latest celebrity to launch a broadside against Facebook's data gluttony is Elon Musk, who tweeted his preference for Signal. The data from App Store indicates that Facebook Messenger leads in user data collection and is closely followed by Whatsapp. The user data that these two messengers compile include the purchase history, financial information, location details, contacts, phone details, email ID and usage data, among others. What's more, Facebook has taken a like-it or lump-it approach with its new guidelines, which means that in case users aren't kosher with sharing data, they need to stop using it. Of course, we must bring it to our readers' notice that Apple's data is based on developer submissions and isn't manually reviewed by the company as yet. However, this still does not explain Facebook's war of words via newspaper ads against these policies. They accused Apple of implementing anti-competitive policies with these updates and even created an FAQ section to explain some of their user data collection habits on Whatsapp. What they did not explain is why their quest for data is substantially higher compared to the rivals. With more than 400 million users in India, Whatsapp's new privacy policy is surely going to get some of its users thinking. Of course, past research has suggested that a substantial number of Indian users aren't too bothered about data privacy. And the iPhones only account for a minuscule 5% of total smartphone sales around here.

If your Raspberry Pi 4 project relies on a HAT, you may want to throw in this stackable Smart Fan HAT by Sequent Microsystems. It cools much more than a single heatsink and has full GPIO access. There are already fan HATs available for the Pi 4, but the biggest draw to this one is the fully exposed access to GPIO pins. Because the full set of pins is exposed on top, users can stack several HATs together. The device is as wide as the Raspberry Pi 4. The HAT uses its own 32- bit processor, receiving input from the I2C interface. A step-up power supply is necessary to convert the 5V output from the Pi to 12V. According to the dev team, it's possible to stack too many HATs, further compounding the heat issue. If necessary, makers can splice multiple Smart Fan HATs into a HAT stack for maximum cooling efficiency.

New year, new Dead By Daylight matchmaking rewards. Developer Behaviour Interactive has posted the first developer update of the year, outlining the fresh ranking system, graphical update, and gameplay tweaks coming to the multiplayer game. Starting next week on the Player Test Build, players will get rated based on their performance in matchmaking. These were tested last year, and now they’re effectively entering into beta, before becoming a permanent fixture. When skill based matchmaking is properly integrated, we’ll have rewards, too. A certain amount of bloodpoints will be given out at the end of each month, depending on how you did, and how many matches you played. Two different kinds of graphical upgrades are coming. The HUD has been redone from the ground up, making it cleaner and more utilitarian than ever before. A hook symbol has been added for players that have been nabbed, and portraits will appear beside player names so you can distinguish exactly who you’re looking at. Accessibility options have been increased, allowing you increase and decrease the size of the HUD to your sight needs. Gideon Meat Plant and the Crotus Prenn Asylum were the next maps up for a lick of paint, and they’ll be rolled out looking grimy as ever. Escaping traps has been changed to a rolling chance based system, to make it fairer for survivor and killer alike. If you escape in only a couple of attempts, your next one will be tougher, and vice versa. Hex: Undying has been altered a tad, in response to players misusing it a little. It’s now deactivated when another Hex totem is cleansed, your tokens transfer to a new totem, and aura readings only apply to dull totems. Jeffrey ‘The Clown’ Hawk is the only killer receiving a substantial update. He has a speed-increasing antidote now, a lower reload time, and his add-ons have been given an ominous sounding rejig. The dev team has launched a new vlog series, Dev Tapes, that goes through everything here in a podcast-like format:

If you’re in the market for a more practical Jeep Wrangler we may have the solution. Thanks to renders posted on Instagram by artist samircustoms, we have the opportunity to dream of a new Jeep variant we never knew we wanted until now. Dubbed the Vangler by its designer, this Jeep based van is ready to go where no van has gone before. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is the perfect family-friendly off-roader that offers room for five passengers and large trunk space. Perspective Jeep owners who want more interior room and seating a sadly out of luck unless they would like to try out the more pedestrian 3-row Jeep Grand Cherokee. That’s where the Vangler comes in. Thanks to the cab-forward design, the Vangler can easily accommodate three rows of seating since the driver and front passenger can sit directly on top of the engine. This means the Vangler can offer far more interior room without enlarging the Jeep Wrangler's footprint. Gallery: Renders Show Jeep Wrangler Van Of Our Dreams Besides the additional passenger room, the Vangler also allows for more space to build out an Overlanding vehicle. Vangler owners would have additional room for sleeping arrangements and other touches of home without compromising the Vangler’s center of gravity with a room mounted tent. The Vangler’s ability to build a more practical Wrangler without compromising its off-road ability makes this render a perfect candidate for production. There’s also a strong business case for Jeep who could use the powertrains, frame, and most of the exterior components from the Wrangler and focus all engineering efforts on the cab-over design portion.

Microsoft Defender for Office 365 is getting some serious upgrades after the company revealed a number of remediation enhancements to its Microsoft 365 roadmap. The releases, which are currently in development, will help security teams to mitigate threats and address suspicious emails. The first update is termed, “additional remediation actions,” and will contain further actions for businesses to counter security threats. Initially, this will only involve new actions applicable to malicious emails, but eventually will be expanded to other entities. The second release concerns “remediation enhancements” and will similarly provide security benefits, giving IT teams more options to search for, review and deal with potential threats before they cause serious damage to an organization’s IT infrastructure. Threat mitigation ”We are retiring the ability to delete attachments as a response action,” the Microsoft 365 roadmap explains. “We're also increasing the export limit of records from mail submissions or action log in the action center to 100,000. We're adding two new columns to the action log details view within the action center. The first is a column for network message ID, allowing security teams to review based on network message ID. The second is a column for ‘Already in Destination’. Previously, all records submitted for remediation were remediated based on their original delivery location.” Microsoft also provided further information regarding how the company is already helping businesses to remediate malicious emails delivered in Office 365. For example, administrators that have had a “search and purge” role assigned to them are able to take action against suspicious emails manually by searching in Threat Explorer. Conversely, organizations can decide to automated remediation by recommending certain actions once particular security triggers have been activated.

King of Fighters XV has been revealed – for real this time – and it’s due to launch this year. After a weird kerfuffle in which developer SNK delayed the planned announcement and a number of screenshots leaked, the devs have actually lifted the veil on KOF15. The brief teaser trailer doesn’t show much, but it does confirm that the King of Fighters XV release date is set for 2021. The brief debut trailer reveals Benimaru, K’, Kyo Kusanagi, Leona, Shun’ei, and Mai Shirunai for the roster. Creative director Eisuke Ogura says that “we’re focusing on keeping the series staple of being fast-paced while also adding elements to make it more exciting. We’re able to do things now for both sound and visuals that were impossible back when developing XIV, so we’re taking our time making sure each element is refined.” More info on the game will be revealed next week, along with an additional trailer. Soon we’ll also see an anime short featuring the KOF cast, created by Masami Obari who, among other credits, worked on the 90s Fatal Fury films. You can check out the teaser and a few words from Ogura below, alongside some info on other upcoming SNK releases, including fresh info on Samurai Shodown Season Pass 3.

Recent spy shots showed a refreshed Audi A8 testing in Germany, and now Motor.es has a rendering imagining how the German brand's upgraded flagship sedan looks when the camouflage comes off. This is hardly a design overhaul but does enough to distinguish the updated model visually. The comparison below shows that the biggest changes are for the front fascia of the A8. Rather than extending the lower crosspieces into the corner inlets, the new design has a more distinct difference by creating a section out of a contrasting shade of metal. The grille is also different. Rather than having an array of horizontal sections, there's an eggcrate-style design. Spy shots also show an alternate version of the mesh with a more jagged look on one of the development cars. The revised headlights gain a new section along the lower outside section of the body. On the current A8, the lamps have a flat lower edge. While this rendering only shows the front, the spy shots reveal that the shape of the taillights remains the same, but there's a different design for the lamps inside of them. The company camouflages the bumper so well that it's not possible to see exactly what is changing. Covering up this area is enough to hint that there are some alterations. Tech upgrades for the A8 seem likely because Audi has been developing improved assisted driving features. The Four Rings originally intended to offer the luxury sedan with Level 3 self-driving capability that would allow for hands-free motoring. However, the lack of government regulation and legal liability fears caused the company to abandon the plan. Rumors also point to Audi introducing the ultra-luxurious Horch variant of the A8 around the same time as the model's mid-cycle refresh. It's supposed to challenge Mercedes' Maybach models but presumably wouldn't be so opulent as to steal sales from the Bentley Flying Spur since both are under the VW Group umbrella.

Business owners will be able to process contactless payments using nothing more than an NFC-enabled Android phone following a collaboration between Phos and Mastercard. The fintech startup has developed what it says is the first-ever software-only Point of Sale (POS) system (SoftPoS), and is now working with Mastercard to support its own Tap on Phone system. Tap on Phone transforms handsets into payment acceptance devices which, with the aid of SoftPos removes the need for any POS hardware. Announced today, SMEs can simply download Tap on Phone to any smartphone that has near field communication and effectively turn their humble handset into a POS. The system allows business owners to accept contactless payments from debit and credit cards along with mobile wallets and wearables, all while bypassing the need for an additional POS terminal. Mastercard has also raised its Card Holder Verification Limit (CVM), which means businesses can have more flexibility when processing contactless payments. The CVM is the amount that merchants are able to accept during a transaction. Combined with the ability to bypass the need for conventional point of sale hardware SMEs will be able to boost their contactless processing power and offer customers added convenience. Contactless payments Jason Lane, Executive Vice President, Market Development Europe at Mastercard, said: “One of the many ways in which we try to help small businesses at Mastercard is by enabling them to accept payments so that they are not limited to cash only transactions. This can help them improve their cashflows and benefit their bottom lines. Our partnership with phos not only fulfils this goal, but it also enables small businesses to provide their customers with contactless payment options via Tap on Phone thus meeting the strong consumer demand for contactless payments.” Brad Hyett, CEO of phos, added: “By extending our relationship with Mastercard, we’re combining its reach with our software to help merchants of all sizes transform their business rapidly. We all need to be able to adapt to changing environments, and with Tap on Phone, retailers can deploy new services that improve the customer experience and increase retention.”

Sonnet has introduced its new family of external graphics solutions aimed primarily at Apple's Mac systems featuring an Intel CPU and a Thunderbolt 3 port. The latest eGPU Breakaway Puck boxes are powered by AMD's Navi graphics processors and enable you to attach a 6K display to an older Mac or just boost its graphics performance. As an added bonus, they can act like simplistic docking stations. Apple's systems launched in recent years are notorious for their lack of upgradeability. While Apple's iMac and MacBook Pro 16 can be configured with a choice of discrete GPUs before purchasing, Mac Mini, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro 13 have to rely on their integrated GPU, which sometimes do not provide sufficient performance or capabilities. For such systems, the only GPU and storage upgrade option is usage of an external GPU and/or a storage system. Sonnet's eGPU Breakaway Puck Thunderbolt 3 boxes with a built-in GPU are designed exactly for that. Measuring 15.2×13×5.1 cm (6 x 5.1 x 2 inches) and weighing 1.47 kilograms (3.25 pounds) with an external power supply, they are small enough to keep on the desk and portable enough to transport if/when needed. Sonnet's latest eGPU Breakaway Pucks are based on AMD's Radeon RX 5500 XT (Navi 14 XTX, 1408 stream processors, 5.2 FP32 TFLOPS) with 4GB of GDDR6 or AMD's Radeon RX 5700 (Navi 10 XL, 2304 stream processors, 7.95 FP32 TFLOPS) with 8GB of GDDR6 memory. The eGFX boxes come with three display outputs: a TB3 connector to attach one 6K monitor (e.g., Apple's own Pro Display XDR) or two 4K screens, a DisplayPort 1.4, and an HDMI 2.0b. As an added bonus, they are equipped with two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A connectors. Furthermore, the second Thunderbolt 3 port can be used to daisy chain another TB3 device, such as a storage system. For high-end iMacs and MacBook Pro 16s, these boxes do not exactly make sense, but for entry-level machines, they will offer a significant performance boost, albeit at a price. Sonnet's GPU-RX55-TB3-S (Radeon RX 5500 XT) will retail for $599.99, whereas the company's GPU-RX57-TB3-S (Radeon RX 5700) will cost $899.99. The boxes can only upgrade Intel based Macs as Apple's M1-based Macs do not support external graphics cards. However, Sonnet says that Apple M1 Macs 'do not yet support eGPUs,' which suggests that appropriate support could be added later on.

Hot on the heels of last year’s excellent Wasteland 3, Inxile Entertainment is on a hiring spree, looking for developers to help it build a next-gen RPG game. According to multiple job listings, the studio plans to switch from its traditional isometric perspective to first person for this next game, which appears to be set in a new world. Twisted Voxel spotted the job listings for positions at Inxile, which include an art director, facial animator, senior gameplay designer, and several engineering roles. The job description for the senior gameplay designer role mentions “tactile first-person weapons” and combat abilities that “draw the player right into the middle of the action.” The art director role involves helping to “bring an extraordinary new world to life” alongside Inxile’s staff of veteran game developers. There’s precious little else to glean from the advertisements about the game itself, or the new IP – Inxile says the game will be “AAA” quality and will be built using Unreal Engine 5. Those snippets of information, plus the fact that Inxile is now part of Microsoft’s expanding stable of game studios, hint at a project significantly more ambitious than we’ve seen from Inxile to date. Founded in 2002 by Interplay founder and CEO Brian Fargo, Inexile has to date traded heavily on its developers’ deep experience with the Fallout series. Microsoft acquired the studio, as well as Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian, in 2018, and has since then also bought Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media. That means all the pieces necessary for some kind of official Fallout reunion game are technically working under the same big roof, and Obsidian even shrugged “maybe, we guess” at the prospect of a sequel to New Vegas last fall. But Inxile’s recent job listings specifically mention building a “new world,” which means a return to the ruined world of Fallout is probably still no more than a dim gleam in Microsoft’s eye at this stage. What we see next from Inxile will likely be something completely new – and it’ll be a whole new kind of game from the traditionally RPG-minded developer.

We've seen Grand Cherokee spy photos. We've seen Grand Cherokee renderings. We even created our own exclusive renderings based on detailed information to preview the new SUV. Now, that all comes to fruition on January 7, a bit less than 24 hours from this post going live. Jeep will officially debut its next-generation Grand Cherokee in three-row format at a special event starting at 12:00 pm Eastern Standard Time. For those who can't wait, we already have something of an early look for you. As previously mentioned, our exclusive renderings featured below were created based on information from sources close to the SUV. Using that information along with design cues from the Grand Wagoneer Concept shown last September, we're extremely confident this is what we'll see when the covers are lifted. Gallery: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Exclusive Renderings One aspect we're scratching our heads on is the model year. As you can see above, our gallery of renderings is titled 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Furthermore, if you visit Jeep's website you'll currently find no less than 10 Grand Cherokee models for 2021. In short, the 2021 Grand Cherokee already exists, and yet, Jeep tells us to prepare for "the all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee." A likely answer comes from a Jeep teaser posted today on Twitter. The vehicle we will see unveiled will be the new Grand Cherokee L, fitted with three-row seating. It's certainly been a long time coming, and it appears Jeep will borrow a card from Ram by offering both next-generation and previous-generation models on dealership lots. What we don't know is whether the new Grand Cherokee will be available in other two-row trims for 2021.
