  1. Microsoft has revealed it will follow in the footsteps of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox with a recompiled version of its flagship web browser Edge, specifically for Apple’s new M1 chip. The new custom Arm-based silicon made its debut in the new MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac mini, and a range of software providers have rushed to release M1-native builds in a bid to avoid performance degradation. As confirmed by Microsoft via Twitter, users can already run Edge on the new range of Macs via Apple’s Rosetta translator service, but native M1 support is also in the works. Microsoft Edge for Apple M1 Macs While services such as Rosetta for macOS and Windows on Arm allow software to run in emulation on Arm-based processors, they also bring about an inevitable drop in performance, because computing resources must be set aside for translation. The other option for developers hoping to avoid this problem is to recompile their software specifically for Arm-based silicon (such as Apple’s new M1 chip). The move to optimize software is mutually beneficial for both parties, who share an incentive to ensure their respective products run as smoothly as possible. Google Chrome was the first web browser to run natively on M1, but the new version is not without its problems; some users found the browser caused new Apple machines to crash unexpectedly. The firm says it has already identified the cause of the issue and is working to release a fix as soon as possible. Microsoft, which has already released an M1-specific version of its Office suite, will be hoping to avoid similar problems with the release of Microsoft Edge for M1. Although the firm has yet to confirm when an M1-specific version will be released, the speed with which its rivals have turned around new builds suggests Edge fans won’t have long to wait.

  2. DevTerm is a series of portable computer kits from ClockworkPi that resembles the RadioShack / Tandy TRS-80 Model 100 portable computers of the 1980s. With big chunky keys, a wide, yet short, display and a thermal printer, these kits start from $219 for a model powered by the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3 with a further four models using custom "core modules" providing more powerful Arm processors. DevTerm may look retro, but under the hood we have 21st century technology. With a ClockworkPi v3.14 mainboard designed to use SO-DIMM Computer on Module (CoM) boards, such as the Raspberry Pi Compute Module or other CoM boards, right now there are five supported CoMs. Could the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 be used with an adaptor such as those from Gumstix? We do hope so. At this time, the choice of CoM includes boards from the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3 1GB RAM and a quad-core Arm Cortex A53 CPU running at a1.2 GHz clock speed to a 1.8 GHz hexa-core chip with 4GB of RAM. The model featuring the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3 is the lowest priced option. CPI v3.14 mainboard uses a compact design, the size is reduced to 3.7 x 3 inches (95x77mm) PMU chip that supports reliable and complete lithium battery charge and discharge management Integrated 5G-WIFI (802.11ac), plus Bluetooth 5.0 High-gain antenna 3x USB-A 2.0 interface and an internal contact interface for the Keyboard module USB-C charging port TF card (MicroSD card) slot 40 Pins MIPI screen interface MicroHDMI interface 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack Onboard stereo audio power amplifier chip 40 Pins GPIOs expansion interface (using standard 0.5mm FPC connector) 52 Pins extension module interface (using standard Mini PCI-E connector) for the “EXT. module" Standard DDR2-SODIMM 200 Pins interface: connects CPI v3.14 to the "Core module" The mainboard features USB-A and USB-C ports, microHDMI and modular connections for the keyboard, screen and battery. A slot to the left of the mainboard, which is a mini PCIe connector, is used with an "EXT module" to provide a cooling fan, camera interface, GPIO interface and additional USB ports.

  3. It was only a matter of time. Minecraft, one of the very best sandbox games around, and Hades, one of the best RPG games of the year, have now collided in Mojang’s block builder through a fan’s enormous – and enormously impressive – recreation of one of their favourite Hades characters. If you’re familiar at all with Supergiant Games’ action-RPG – which is in the running for a whopping eight categories at this year’s The Game Awards – a particular image will likely come to mind when you think of Chaos, the game’s Primordial Originator. That is, an embodiment of the void from the dawn of time, through which the Titans and Nyx arrived. A Minecraft fan has recreated that very image in the form of a huge 3D structure, and it’s pretty astonishing. As you can see in the images of the build below, EricPham’s Chaos is instantly recognisable, and has every feature Hades’ own character does, right down to their jewelled (and dual-eyed) headdress, the many spooky faces spilling down from the deity’s body, and even the colourful design behind them. On Reddit, the creator says the build took them around three weeks to complete, and that they used “plugins such as Worldedit and Voxelsniper” to make it, though “the rest is hand smoothing”. Take a look at the creation for yourself below: If you’re feeling inspired to make the most of your game, be sure to take at our Minecraft mods, Minecraft skins, and Minecraft tower designs guides if you’re looking for some tips. Or, you can check out our Hades review if you haven’t tried it yet and are keen to find out more.

  6. If you’ve yet to jump into one of the biggest space games going, the next round of free PC games from the Epic Games Store has you covered. Elite Dangerous is one of the platform’s biggest giveaways in some time, and it’s not even the only freebie for the week – we’re also getting the puzzle-action game, The World Next Door. Both Elite Dangerous and The World Next Door will be available on the Epic Store promotion page now, and will be available until November 26 at 8:00 PST / 11:00 EST / 16:00 GMT. As always, you’ll ‘purchase’ the games at a price of zero dollars, and they’ll remain tied to your library forever, as with any game you’d buy from the store. Elite Dangerous probably needs no introduction at this point – Frontier’s revival of the classic space sim is one of the most venerable titles on PC these days, and it’s still getting plenty of new content. The Horizons expansion recently went free for all players, and it’s included here, too. The World Next Door is certainly a lower-profile title, but you should give it a look – it’s got a great style, and a wild mish-mash of classic Zelda-style dungeons with shape-matching puzzle combat. I had a great time playing it at a convention a couple of years ago, and it’s worth taking a look at. Next week, you’ll be able to grab Mudrunner from the Epic Store, if you want to exchange your space truckin’ for the dirty, dirty terrestrial variety.

  8. TeamGroup has introduced the Zeus series of DDR4 memory. The memory kits will come in UDIMM and SO-DIMM form factors with frequencies up to DDR4-3200 and capacities up to 64GB. Regardless of the presentation, the memory modules feature the same design - a black PCB with a thin aluminium heat spreader that flaunts the T-Force and Zeus branding. The no-frills design will definitely appease consumers that aren't fond of tall heat spreaders or cheesy RGB lighting. On the UDIMM front, TeamGroup offers the Zeus series in both single memory module and dual-channel packages. The memory modules can be 8GB, 16GB or 32GB in size, while the memory kits include capacities of 16GB (2x8GB), 32GB (2x16GB) and 64GB (2x32GB). There are only three frequencies to pick from: DDR4-2666, DDR4-3000 and DDR4-3200. Admittedly, the timings aren't very impressive for the aforementioned frequencies so TeamGroup is likely marketing the Zeus memory kits towards very tight budgets. TeamGroup Zeus DDR4 Gaming Memory Specifications: TeamGroup only sells the Zeus SO-DIMM memory as single modules in capacities of 8GB, 16GB or 32GB. The DDR4-2666 modules are rated with 19-19-19-43 timings and the DDR4-3200 variants come with 22-22-22-52 timings. The SO-DIMM offerings are compatible with Intel's latest 11th Generation Core processors and AMD's Ryzen 4000 (codename Renoir) mobile chips. TeamGroup backs its Zeus memory products with a lifetime warranty. The manufacturer didn't comment how much the memory kits will cost or when they'll be available to the general public.

  9. A refresh for the Jeep Compass is coming. After the new design showing up in registration photos from China and spy shots of crossover's development ahead for the presentation at the Guangzhou Auto Show, it's the manufacturer's turn to release the first teasers of the model. There's an image of the front, which confirms the lines that we see on camouflaged development vehicles, and there are several photos of the interior, revealing the new floating infotainment system. The cabin images show small details of the updated Compass, but it is still enough to see the differences from the current one. With the addition of a tablet-style infotainment screen, much of the dashboard is free to use a new finish. Below the display, there are two air vents and brown leather trim, which ends in a piece that looks like aluminum. Gallery: Jeep Compass 2022 - Teasers: Another image highlights the size of the infotainment screen. It sits at an angle and has a metallic frame. The system is in Chinese, but we can notice that two of the buttons are related to the HVAC system. This may indicate that the tech follows the path of other manufacturers by discarding physical controls to integrate all ventilation options within the multimedia. The new Compass 2022 is also better equipped, receiving new technology and security items. Spy shots suggest it has a fully digital instrument panel and a new steering wheel, but these details are not yet confirmed. The other two images show the front of the Compass. One photo highlights the upper grille with a new finish that uses horizontal chrome lines. Just below, there is a second, very thin air intake that runs to the sides of the bumper where the fog lights are. You can get another look at the vehicle's face in the second image. A sketch of the Compass shows the thinner headlights that have LED running lights along the top of the lamps. Following the debut in China, look for the Compass to arrive in the US for the 2022 model year. We would expect a full unveiling of the American-market version fairly early next year.

  12. Google Photos is ending its unlimited free storage policy for photos and videos, Google said Wednesday in a blog post. After June 1, 2021, any new photos and videos you upload will count toward the free 15GB of storage that comes with every Google account. But don't worry: Any photos or videos you've uploaded before that day won't be part of the cap. The move is meant to encourage people to sign up for Google's storage subscription service, Google One. Google One plans start at $2 a month in the US for 100GB of storage and other features, like Google Store discounts. It's a good idea to make sure your existing photos and videos are backed up in Google Photos before the June deadline, since those will be considered free and exempt from the storage limit. You can check your backup quality in the Photos app by going to Settings > Back up & sync. Once the change takes effect, more than 80% of current Google Photos users should still be able to store about three years of content with that free 15GB. Google will notify you in the app and by email once you get close to hitting your 15GB limit. You can also find a personalized estimate for how long your free storage may last, based on how frequently you back up photos and videos to your Google Account. More than 4 trillion photos are stored in Google Photos, according to the post, with 28 billion new photos and videos uploaded each week. In June, Google gave the Photos app a refresh, with a map view and three tabs to organize your pictures.

  14. A closed beta for Blood Bowl 3 will happen early 2021, developer Cyanide and publisher NACON have announced. Right now, one direct method of scoring an invite has been revealed, with more to be “revealed later”. The third game based on Warhammer’s gruesome take on American football is scheduled to arrive at some point next year, but players especially eager have an opportunity to kick-off early. Pre-orders of the latest edition of the board game, Blood Bowl: Second Season Edition, come with a code for the closed beta. Other ways of getting in will be provided, but how and when is still to be confirmed. Essentially a strategy game series, Blood Bowl turns the endless war of the Warhammer universe into endless, brutal sports contests, matches played out in turn-based combat. Games Workshop created the format in the eighties, and videogames have been developed based on it since the nineties. Cyanide’s modern take on the property started with Blood Bowl in 2009, moving onto Blood Bowl 2 in 2015, and now Blood Bowl 3, each more gut-wrenching than the last. According to the official description, the game will have 12 teams with their own pitch and cheerleaders, a single-play campaign and multiplayer modes, and “more customisation options” than any Blood Bowl game before. The two previous installments were a bit dense and unwelcoming for newcomers, so if this next one can streamline things, it could be a hit. The cinematic trailer’s a pretty good estimation, honestly:

  15. A Mercedes-AMG C63 with a lift kit and massive fender flares was caught in the wild by an Instagram user based in Russia. Car manufacturers go to great lengths to disguise what cars they are road testing, which leads us to believe that this mule isn’t for a Mercedes product at all. Based on a few key facts we can conclude that this test mule was actually built to test components of the Aston Martin DBX SUV. According to Carscoops, this Instagram photo was taken at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, which is quite close to the Aston Martin DBX factory in St. Athan, Wales. Carscoops also mentions that the wheels being used on the lifted C63 test mule come from the current Aston Martin DBX, which is another indicator that this test mule is for the DBX SUV. Since the C63 body used for the test mule comes from a pre-facelift car, this DBX test mule may have been used to develop the original DBX and is still in use today to secretly refine the current SUV. The current Aston Martin DBX SUV is the first SUV offering from Aston Martin and features a Mercedes-AMG sourced twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine. When the Aston Martin DBX debuted in early 2020 it brought Aston Martin into the growing SUV market and allowed Aston Martin to grow its market share and customer base. Aston Martin took a great deal of time to develop the DBX to ensure it gave customers a true Aston Martin driving experience, so it’s no surprise that clever test mules like this C63 exist. Unique test mules like this lifted C63 are a very unique way to try and retain ambiguity while testing new products out in the open. Hopefully, we can learn more about this specific mule now that it’s becoming the most famous lifted Mercedes-AMG C63 on the internet.

  16. Despite a slight setback, Infiniti is pushing through with the launch of the all-new 2021 QX55. As the coupe version of the Infiniti QX50 luxury compact crossover, the QX55 is set to go up against BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. It was originally scheduled for November 11 debut but now rescheduled to November 17, announced through a set of teasers from the brand's official Facebook page. As part of the announcement, the Infiniti QX55 will be presented by the American singer-songwriter Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III, otherwise known as Aloe Blacc. Infiniti wants you to set a reminder for the online event, even creating an official event page on the social media platform. The event page also shows another teaser for the reveal, which unsurprisingly shows the rear end of the swoopy coupe crossover. You can see the final teaser on the image atop this page. This isn't the first we've seen this C-pillar, though, as previous teasers have shown its rear end, along with a blurred representation of its sleek roofline. Matter of fact, we've seen the vehicle in person last year, but we can only tell you a few details about it. The QX55's association with the QX50 suggests that it will adopt the variable-compression turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine. This mill churns out 268 horsepower (200 kilowatts) and 280 pound-feet (380 Newton-meters of torque), sent to either the front wheels or on all fours depending on the availability upon launch. A continuously variable transmission is also expected. We'll know the full details about the all-new Infiniti QX55 crossover in a few days' time. The launch is set at exactly 5:55 p.m. (PST) on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, to be broadcasted on the marque's official YouTube channel.

  17. TikTok users won't need to use a VPN to access the video sharing service yet as the US Commerce Department has halted a ban on the app in the US. The ban was originally set to go into effect on November 12 of this year after the app was deemed a national security risk by the Trump administration. However, TikTok itself recently had to ask the US Court of Appeals for more information after it received “no substantive feedback” despite the looming deadline. Earlier this year, the US government announced that the app's parent company ByteDance would be required to sell off its US assets due to national security concerns. TikTok then offered to sell off part of its business to Oracle and Walmart though for the deal to go through, the Chinese government would have to approve as well. We've rounded up the best iPhone VPN apps around These are the best web hosting services for your website Also check out our list of the best VPN for China The app was then granted a preliminary injunction by a Philadelphia court blocking the upcoming ban but until now, it has remained unclear as to what exactly would happen once the deadline passed. Postponed for now The US Commerce Department announced this week that it will “comply with the terms” of the preliminary injunction from September which means that TikTok won't be banned in the US just yet. However, the app could still end up being banned as TikTok has only been granted an additional 15 days, until November 27, to persuade national security officials that its deal with Oracle and Walmart should be approved. At the same time though, the deal also still needs to receive approval from the Chinese government to be finalized. The US isn't the first country to consider banning TikTok as the Indian government banned it and 58 other Chinese apps this summer citing data and privacy concerns. Only time will tell whether or not the current administration plans to continue its efforts to ban the app. However, President Trump still seems to be solely focused on the US 2020 election which means ByteDance may end up not having to sell TikTok's US assets to another company after all.

  18. Apple's new exciting M1 CPU was just announced and promises significant performance gains over the companies previous systems equipped with Intel core processors. Unfortunately, in Apple's presentation, the performance numbers shown were at best vague and non-conclusive. That leaves us in the dark as to where exactly the M1 will actually land in terms of CPU performance. That changes today with a tweet from @andysomerfield, who has real performance numbers for the Apple M1 chip in the Affinity Photo benchmark. The M1 is put against one of Apple's older 2019 iMacs with an 8th generation Intel Core i5 6-core CPU that features a boost frequency of up to 4.1GHz. Affinity Photo is a photo editing service with a built-in benchmark that measures vector and rasterization performance. Apple's M1 processor scored the following: 504 points in Single-Core Vector 2032 points in Multi-Core Vector 538 points in Multi-Core Raster 6966 points for GPU Raster Combined 532 Single Core Combined 7907 Single GPU For the Core i5 and Radeon Pro 580X combo in the 2019 iMac, here are the results: 310 Single-Core Vector 1515 Multi-Core Vector 393 Multi-Core Raster 8133 GPU Raster 407 Single Core 5568 Single GPU In the CPU tests, the M1 chip wins hands down, being on average 25% faster than the Core i5 CPU. The M1 is also not much slower than the RX 580X in the GPU scores. This is exciting for Apple's M1 chip, which clearly demonstrates its ARM based architecture can go toe to toe with previous-gen Intel x86 chips in performance. In the past, ARM was a great for attaining great power efficiency and long battery life. Now Apple is demonstrating we can have the best of both worlds: high performance and long battery life. There are of course caveats. This is only one set of benchmarks, which could be specifically optimized for the M1 chip. This is also against a base model 8th Gen Core i5. We need to see a lot more data to get a handle on how the M1 truly compares against other processors across a variety of tasks. Either way, it'll be very interesting to see how the M1 stacks up against Intel's and AMD's latest offerings. Those have more cores and higher frequencies, which the initial M1 isn't likely to match, but it should still prove great for laptop battery life.

  19. Final Fantasy XIV’s big updates are back on track after COVID-19-related delays to patch 5.3, and we’re closing in on the launch of the next major release. Another patch 5.4 live letter has been scheduled for later this month, and that more or less confirms that the Final Fantasy XIV patch 5.4 release date is coming very soon. The next live Letter from the Producer will broadcast on Friday, November 27 at 3:00 PST / 6:00 EST / 11:00 GMT. These broadcasts typically run for about three hours, and are hosted entirely in Japanese. However, the prepared slides that accompany the broadcast are shown in English, so you can get a solid idea of what’s coming. (Plus you can get live, unofficial fan translations from the FF14 DIscord.) Patch 5.4 has already been confirmed for a December release, and major updates typically launch about two weeks after a new live letter. So while it’s not yet confirmed, you might want to circle December 8 on your gaming calendar. Early patch 5.4 notes have confirmed the Eden’s Promise raid, a Blue Mage update, and an ‘explorer’ mode that will let you look around dungeons without fear of bad guys. 5.4 is also going to restore auto-demolition for housing, so if you’ve got a house on ice, you might want to log in soon. The WoW Shadowlands release date is later this month, too, so fans of MMORPGs are looking at an embarrassment of riches in the weeks to come.
