  1. Google Photos, the search giant's po[CENSORED]r online image storage and editing platform, has today announced it will no longer provide free, unlimited cloud storage for ‘high quality’ photos and videos. Starting on June 1, 2021, any newly uploaded images will instead count towards the free 15GB of cloud storage that comes with every Google Account. If you use Google Photos, any ‘high quality’ photos or videos you upload to the service before the June 1 deadline will not count towards that 15GB storage cap, even after the new rules come into play. There’s no change being made to images or videos uploaded in ‘original quality’, as these are already counted towards an account's 15GB storage cap. The key difference between the two is that ‘original quality’ preserves files in their original resolution, while ‘high quality’ files are processed and compressed automatically by Google Photos to save space. There is one notable group of users who are exempt from the changes: if you own any Pixel smartphone, from the original through to the brand new Pixel 5, you can continue uploading and storing as many high quality snaps and videos as you’d like without it contributing to your quota. In a blog post, Google Photos says the switch is a necessary step that, “allows us to keep pace with the growing demand for storage”. Still, it’s sure to elicit a reaction from users who have been receiving free, unlimited storage of their memories in for over five years now. Google estimates that once these changes take effect, around 80% of users should be able to store about three more years worth of photos and videos before they'll hit that 15GB free storage cap. The company also provides a personalized estimate, so you can see how much you have left. Other Google services such as Gmail and Drive also count towards your 15GB. Once June 1, 2021 rolls around, Google is also introducing a new function that will spot dark or blurry photos, and even large videos, and ask if you want to delete them from your account. If you find you've reached the 15GB cap, you’ll need to sign up for a Google One account to buy more storage space. Prices start at $1.99 / £1.99 / AU$1.99 per month for 100GB.

  2. If you've ever had the chance to spend time with space engineers, you learn really fast they like to tinker. It's not surprising that this team from NASA has been working on a cool Raspberry Pi project that mimics the International Space Station (ISS) via a robotic replica. The project is dubbed the ISS Mimic. It's a 1% scale model of the actual ISS. Most of the components are 3D printed; A total of 12 motors are used to control the solar panels and thermal radiators. The model moves in real-time based on data received directly from the ISS. When a solar panel moves in space, the corresponding panel moves on the ISS Mimic. The ISS data is available publicly and accessed using a Raspberry Pi. The information is processed through a series of custom JavaScript and Python code which is used to generate commands for the ISS model. Kivy was used to create graphics for a touchscreen interface. If you want to see this impressive robotic model in action, check out the official ISS Mimic channel on YouTube and be sure to follow them for future updates.

  3. Fall Guys Season 2 is now in full swing with a medieval theme that sees players’ beans don orc, jester, and duchess outfits to compete in the super competitive battle royale game. But where does a goose fit into all of this? Well, it turns out one has come to the game. Developer Mediatonic sometimes tosses in random outfits and additions to the title, so seeing a goose face off against a duchess, surprisingly, isn’t the craziest pairing the game has to offer. The goose from Untitled Goose Game is known for being particularly obnoxious, so seeing goose beans push opponents off ledges and block others from victory isn’t too far out of the realm of possibility. We’ve now been given a glimpse of the goose via the Fall Guys Twitter account, following a tweet earlier this week with a horrifying goose cosplay that may give you an idea of the collaboration the costume stems from. Mediatonic says: “We’ve done a huge collab with Untitled Goose Game! We’ve got three costumes and a HONK emote with sound effects! The Goose costume is featured for the next few days, and the rest will come later on!” Other recent additions to the Fall Guys outfit roster include a slightly disconcerting Sonic the Hedgehog with a line dividing its top and bottom halves, and a fantastic Godzilla that has quickly become a fan-favourite outfit. With whispers of Season 3 being bigger than Season 2 already circulating, it will be interesting to see what kind of zany outfits the beans get next. The goose is available as of today, Friday, November 13, but if you want to give some of the other best games like Fall Guys a go, take a look at our super handy list.

  4. Mainly sold in the Asia-Pacific region, the Ford Everest is a rugged SUV that uses the Ranger pickup truck platform. It has been around since 2003 and is currently in its fifth year as a second-generation model, with an equivalent Endeavour-badged variant available in India. Last year, Ford Australia launched a BaseCamp accessory package, and it’s now back for 2021MY as a limited-run special edition. It’s based on the Everest Trend trim and comes exclusively with four-wheel drive and diesel engines. Customers Down Under can opt for either a twin-turbo 2.0-liter rated at 210 hp and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) or a 3.2-liter inline-five (yes, Audi isn’t the only company making inline-five units) with 192 hp and 470 Nm (347 lb-ft). Both come with automatic transmissions, a ten-speed for the four-pot variant, and a six-speed for the 3.2-liter model. Gallery: 2021 Ford Everest Basecamp: Ok, but what makes the Basecamp different than the regular Everest? It gets a series of accessories tailored to outdoorsy owners eager to drive off the beaten path. The list with off-road goodies varies from a snorkel to a nudge bar with a built-in LED light bar. To sweeten the pot, Ford Australia also throws in a roof rack and a tow bar, while visual upgrades include gray accents and a BaseCamp decal. In terms of pricing, the inline-five model begins from 64,990 AUD, which works out to about $47,100 at current exchange rates. Step up to the twin-turbo four-cylinder and the price rises to 66,490 AUD ($48,200). It’s an increase of 2,000 AUD ($1,450) over the standard Everest Trend while adding kit worth 6,000 AUD ($4,350), according to Ford. The return of the BaseCamp as a special edition isn’t the only update prepared for the 2021 Everest as the capable SUV also sees the introduction of a rear-wheel-drive Everest Sport. The Trend and Titanium get some minor styling revisions like the gray mesh grille with a chrome trim, with the Titanium also rocking the “Everest” lettering on its grille.

  6. The Mercedes C-Class is due for a redesign, and our spy photographers have caught the model in various trims out testing. The entire lineup will get a new look, new powertrains, and new interiors, from the entry-level model to the top-tier AMG offering. That range includes the mid-range AMG model, the AMG C53, and a new batch of spy photos shows the sedan’s ongoing development. The car is wearing a bit less camouflage than before, though there still appears to be some cladding at the front underneath the foil. However, we do see production lighting elements front and rear, indicating its development is coming along nicely. While this is the less of the two AMG models, it still features some tell-tale signs of performance. The quad exhaust is one clear indicator of the sedan’s potential output. It’s expected to wear the Panamericana grille, too. Gallery: 2022 Mercedes-AMG C53 Spy Photos: The new AMG model should come with a new engine. Rumors suggest the V6 is out as Mercedes will replace it with the company’s power-packed 2.0-liter four-cylinder. In some Mercedes models, the mill makes 416 horsepower (310 kilowatts), which would be a nice improvement over the 385 hp (287 kW) twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. There’s a good chance the mill could make even more power in the C53, though it should pair with a nine-speed automatic regardless of its output. Even the C63 is expected to downgrade from its brawny V8 to a four-cylinder hybrid setup. We won’t see Mercedes begin to roll out the new C-Class until late next year. However, we do expect to see the AMG C53 also debut alongside it. The hotter C63 likely won’t come for about another six months after. All the new C-Class offerings will get a revamped interior, new features and technologies, and a new exterior look, though we doubt Mercedes will get too wild with the design.

  7. The EU is continuing to pursue legislation that would effectively render encryption tools useless. The EU Draft Council Resolution on Encryption states that it will push for lawful access to encrypted content but, in effect, that would create a backdoor that would undermine end-to-end encryption. “The European Union fully supports the development, implementation and use of strong encryption,” the draft legislation reads. “Encryption is a necessary means of protecting fundamental rights and the digital security of governments, industry and society. At the same time, the European Union needs to ensure the ability of competent authorities in the area of security and criminal justice, e.g. law enforcement and judicial authorities, to exercise their lawful powers, both online and offline.” How exactly the EU will manage to gain access to encrypted content without greatly infringing on citizens’ privacy isn’t really explained. There are some vague ideas about creating an “active discussion” between tech firms, researchers and academics, but that’s about it. Introducing vulnerabilities Unfortunately, it’s not currently possible to create an encryption backdoor for law enforcement officials without creating a massive security vulnerability. Such a feature might help criminal cases but it would also jeopardize the privacy of everyone else at the same time. “The old fashioned police tactics cannot decrypt encrypted messages very easily, putting many cases on hold, and no doubt law enforcement is worrying about WhatsApp introducing new disappearing messages also,” Jake Moore, Cybersecurity Specialist at ESET, commented. “However, putting the internet in jeopardy by demanding the relaxation of encryption is not the answer.” Currently the proposal remains at the draft stage so a lot more needs to be done before it becomes EU law. Still, it’s worrying that high-level government officials don’t really seem to understand how encryption works.

  8. Nvidia could have a new competitor for the top of AMD's Big Navi graphics card stack. New rumors have surfaced claiming that the Green Team is preparing an answer for AMD's Radeon RX 6900 XT. Avid Twitter user kopite7kimi, who has been accurate on previous Ampere leaks, shared the potential specifications for a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. Although Chinese news outlet HKEPC confirmed the specifications with an alleged Nvidia board partner, it's advisable to treat the information with some caution. According to the rumors the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti reportedly employs the GA102 die, the silicon that powers the GeForce RTX 3090 and RTX 3080. What might be the most shocking part from the leak is the possibility of the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti coming with nearly identical core specifications to the GeForce RTX 3090, suggesting similar performance. If true, the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti may land with 10,496 CUDA cores, 328 Tensor cores and 82 RT cores. Therefore, the main performance differentiator seemingly lies within the memory configuration. The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is rumored to feature 20GB of GDDR6X memory clocked at 19.5 Gbps. That's just 4GB less than what's on the GeForce RTX 3090. In order to keep the two Ampere-based graphics cards apart, it's plausible that Nvidia could restrict the memory interface on the GeForce RTX 3080 to 320-bit. If so, the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti would deliver a memory bandwidth up to 780 GBps, just a 16.7% decrease from what the GeForce RTX 3090 offers. Given the similarities and differences, the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti would be a limied version of the GeForce RTX 3090. However, NVLink is still exclusive to the GeForce RTX 3090, but the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti purportedly features the same 320W TDP (thermal design power) as the GeForce RTX 3080. The lower TDP on the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti implies that its clock speeds should be lower than the GeForce RTX 3090. There are no reviews of the Radeon RX 6900 XT yet. However, if AMD's Big Navi benchmarks are accurate, the Radeon RX 6900 XT ties the GeForce RTX 3090 in 4K gaming, but outperforms it in lower resolutions, such as 2560 x 1440. Nonetheless, it's important to highlight that AMD performed its tests with Smart Access Memory activate, a feature which boosts the performance on Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards when they are installed in the same system with a Ryzen 5000 chip. At this point in time, it's unclear if you'd get the same performance with a different CPU. Assuming that the performance gap between the GeForce RTX 3090 and Radeon RX 6900 XT isn't substantial, Big Navi's appeal comes from its lower price tag. The Radeon RX 6900 XT has a $999 MSRP, while Nvidia prices the GeForce RTX 3090 at a whopping $1,499. That's where Nvidia will attack AMD. HKEPC's sources allege that the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti will hit the market at $999 to be on equal footing with the Radeon RX 6900 XT. If that's the case, the winner might not be who's faster, but who's more widely available. We already know from Nvidia's CEO that the GeForce RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 shortages will last until next year. So, it's no surprise that the rumors point to a January 2021 release for the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. The question remains whether Nvidia would have enough supply of the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. The Radeon RX 6900 XT will go on sale on December 8 so, if you can actually find one in stock, AMD's card has the first-mover advantage.

  9. It seems everyone loves getting their wits spooked out of them in Phasmophobia, the game about searching for ghosts in abandoned places and then screaming when you find them. It seems as though there’s a new location in the works, as developer Kinetic Games has revealed that it’s working on a prison level. As spotted by Game Informer, Kinetic Games today tweeted a screengrab of Phasmophobia’s Trello board, which tracks the game’s progress through Early Access and provides a roadmap of sorts. The image shows a new entry in the ‘In Progress’ column, which reads: ‘Make a Prison level.’ We’ve analysed the image and we believe this means that the developers are making a prison level for Phasmophobia. From what we’ve heard, prison seems like a pretty scary place to be under ideal circumstances, so a prison crawling with poltergeists sounds downright terrifying. What kinds of ghosts haunt a prison? They have to be the worst ghosts, right? It’s a troubling theme, though – why would a ghost stick around in a prison anyway? Wouldn’t you want to go, I don’t know, haunt the bus station nearby instead? Maybe a cool old hotel? All these questions and more will have to wait until the Phasmophobia prison level comes out, and we don’t at this point know when that’s going to happen. As a comment on the image, Kinetic Games tweeted only the letter E. Fortunately, you can be prepared beforehand by reading our Phasmophobia sanity effects guide, which explains what happens when you hit sanity level 0. You can also practice steeling your nerves by playing one of the other excellent ghost games that are available on PC right now.

  12. Donald Trump is unshackled from domestic political considerations and enraged by what he and his adjutants have falsely described as a fraudulent election. The administration of outgoing US president now appears set to inflict maximum damage on its perceived enemies and strive to do favours for its friends in the final weeks of its rule, worrying international observers who say his flailing final moves could inflict lasting harm. Most of Mr Trump’s erratic and destructive potential moves during the final 10 weeks of his rule could target the US, with his venom directed primarily at senior officials he describes as “deep state” figures who he accuses of undermining his presidency. But even his attempts to sate domestic supporters and feed red meat to his vociferous hard-right base could have broader international implications. Among the Trump administration’s primary international targets is Iran, with several news organisation’s reporting that Washington plans to impose waves of even more sanctions on the Middle East country during its final weeks to limit the options of the administration of the president-elect, Joe Biden, who has vowed to return to an arms control deal abandoned by his predecessor. The White House is also rushing arms sales to the United Arab Emirates and Taiwan, according to reports, moves that could be seen as provocative to adversaries in Tehran and Beijing. The Trump administration has also hinted that it plans to declare several major global human rights advocacy organisations “anti-Semitic” in a scheme to discredit them. It has already launched a purge of international aid, environmental and public health officials in what is being seen as an attempt to cram through Mr Trump’s so-called “America first” agenda as his administration winds down. “There is this kind of sense that he will do everything in the next 72 days in a blitz to secure and push through whatever remains on his agenda that hasn’t been done over the last four years,” said Gorona Grgic, a lecturer in US politics at the University of Sydney in Australia. The lengthy lame duck period between the American presidential election and the inauguration originally stretched until 4 March but was drawn back to 20 January about 90 years ago. It is a relic of the horse-and-buggy-era when the 18th century US constitution was written. It was designed for an era when it could take weeks for state electors to convene and cast their ballots, or for a new president, his family and staff to move to Washington. It is now used by presidents to grant pardons to crooked allies, or even occasionally make bold, controversial foreign policy moves such as reaching out to adversaries. Transitions are often smooth, as when outgoing President George W Bush went out of his way to welcome President Barack Obama following the 2008 elections. But scholars cite numerous moments of friction dating back to when John Adams appointed a raft of new judges before leaving office to his on-and-off friend Thomas Jefferson in 1797, or when Herbert Hoover refused to make steps to ameliorate economic hardship of the Great Depression before handing power to Franklin Roosevelt in 1933. But some fear the famously vindictive Mr Trump and the coterie of opportunists, foreign-influenced operatives, and hard-right ideologues surrounding him will use the interim period before Mr Biden is sworn into office on 20 January to further pursue their agendas and harmfully impact the world based on suggestions or advice from his entourage. “The last four years have demonstrated that there’s very rarely a clearly thought-out foreign policy,” said Lindsay Chervinsky, a historian at Iona College in New York and the author of the The Cabinet, about the US presidency. “The president does whatever he wants on a whim, often preceded by a phone call by a perceived ally or friend.” There are indications Trump is already moving fast. The news website Axios reported that the Trump administration aims to impose new sets of sanctions on Iran every week until it leaves office, an attempt to complicate a Biden administration’s attempts to return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCOPA), the nuclear programme forged by President Barack Obama and world powers and renounced by Mr Trump in 2018. Mr Biden has vowed to return to the deal negotiated by his former boss, which offers Iran relief from American and other sanctions in exchange for maintaining lids on its nuclear programme. But Mr Biden must hurry. Iranian presidential elections in June 2021 may elevate a hardliner who may be less inclined to return to the deal, and additional sanctions could take time for Mr Biden to unravel. Iraqi officials told Agence-France Presse they expected the outgoing administration to also release a “bucket list of sanctions” against Iranian interests in Iraq, as Mr Trump was likely to “up the ante”. Mr Trump late last week imposed a new set of sanctions on Lebanese Christian politician Gebran Bassil for alleged corruption in a move his father-in-law, the Lebanese president, Michel Aoun, alleged was because of his party’s alliance with the Iranian-backed military and political group Hezbollah, which is a designated terrorist organisation in the US. One Lebanese official told The Independent they were bracing for more sanctions targeting Hezbollah’s allies in the months before Mr Trump leaves the White House. For the moment they were “waiting to see what happens”. Ms Chervinsky is warning Mr Trump could launch missile on Iranian-backed forces in Iraq, prompting another potentially deadly round of escalation between Tehran and Washington nearly a year after the assassination of Qassem Soleimani and retaliatory Iranian missile strikes on American troops. Bowing to pro-Israel hawks who have shaped his Middle East postures, Mr Trump may also have the State Department label Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Oxfam “anti-semitic” organisations over the criticism of Israeli abuses of Arabs and urge other governments not to cooperate with them. On Friday, Mr Trump also fired the deputy head of Usaid, the American agency that provides humanitarian relief and support to struggling nations around the world, in a legalistic manoeuvre to make permanent the loyalist acting chief it has appointed. “This means that effectively that Usaid has been defanged with no one administering the budget of $31bn,” said Grgic. It also sparked fresh concerns that he may also cut US funding to vital United Nations agencies after controversially withdrawing from the World Health Organisation this year and slashing all funds to the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency in 2018. One UN official told The Independent at the moment the fears and discussions were “anecdotal” but some agencies were engaged with Mr Biden’s team to secure reassurances of a partial reinstatement of funding already cut. There are also worries that an executive order Mr Trump issued days before the election could be used to purge scores of top scientists and healthcare professionals working in the US administration on issues such as climate change and the coronavirus pandemic and replace them with unqualified administration loyalists. "The president does whatever he wants on a whim, often preceded by a phone call by a perceived ally or friend." "Lindsay Chervinsky, historian at Iona College" Mr Trump could also lash out at perceived enemies in China, source of the coronavirus that he appears to believe cost him the presidency, and America’s traditional allies such as France and Germany, which openly celebrated his demise, by announcing destabilising troop deployments or withdrawals which could rattle nerves and fray confidence in the US even if they are not carried out before inauguration day. Many of Mr Trump’s potential acts of geopolitical vandalism could be reversed on 20 January. Some wouldn’t be. Mr Trump’s allies have already hinted at possibly publicly releasing intelligence – such as the raw material used to compile evidence used to investigate the president’s alleged Russia ties – that they believe could be damaging to their perceived enemies but which could also compromise sources and methods. “I am very concerned about the declassification of military information,” said Ms Chervinsky. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he declassified information and handed it over to Russia. So much of our system around the presidency is governed by norm and precedent but not by rules or law.”

  14. One eagle-eye Redditor has spotted that the Aya Neo Founder Edition has gone up for preorder in China. The handheld gaming console will compete with the Nintendo Switch and other rivals, including the Smach Z and the GPD Win Max. The Aya Neo Founder Edition focuses on gaming portability and possesses a design that's similar to the mainstream Nintendo Switch. The device measures 255 x 106 x 20mm and weights in at 650g. It features a transparent body and --in a nod to the PC gaming word -- RGB lighting. While you may dig or dislike the design, the Aya Neo Founder Edition's true value lies in its hardware. AMD's Ryzen 5 4500U (codename Renoir) APU is responsible for both processor and graphical workloads. In case you're not familiar with the 7nm APU, the Ryzen 5 4500U is a hexa-core 15W chip that's based on the Zen 2 microarchitecture. It lacks simultaneous multithreading (SMT), but boasts an impressive boost clock speed up to 4 GHZ. The cooling solution appears to employ two copper heat pipes, which are 8mm in diameter, attached to a copper radiator that relies on a small cooling fan. On the graphics end, the Ryzen 5 4500U is equipped with six Vega Compute Units (CUs) running up to 1,500 MHz, which should be more than enough to push modern AAA titles at the resolution that the Aya Neo Founder Edition displays. The Aya Neo Founder Edition ships with 16GB of LPDDR4X-4266 memory. Customers have the option to choose between a 512GB or 1TB NVMe SSD. The drive appears to be the SN550 M.2 2280 SSD from Western Digital. The handheld gaming device features a 7-inch IPS touch display that boasts a resolution of 1280 x 800 with a 215 ppi density. The Aya Neo Founder Edition is based on Windows 10, so the button layout is similar to an Xbox controller, with the addition of an array of task-specific buttons. There's also a gyroscope and gravity sensor present in the design. The Aya Neo Founder Edition features a pair of stereo speakers, but there's also a standard 3.5mm audio jack for connecting your headphones. In regards to connectivity, the device provides three USB-C ports, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. As a result, you can pair a standard wired or wireless keyboard or mouse with the Aya Neo Founder Edition so you can navigate and perform ordinary Windows tasks. Lastly, the miniature gaming device comes with a 47 Whr battery and supports 65W fast charging. The 512GB version of the Aya Neo Founder Edition sells for around $600, while the 1TB version costs $680. Currently, the company only sells the device in the Chinese market and doesn't accept overseas orders. However, the creator is contemplating whether to start an Indiegogo campaign so that its interested customers outside China can get their hands on the device at a fair price.

  15. Telltale’s Sam and Max brought us a modern revival of adventure games, and if only for that reason I shall love it forever. Well, it’s also a delightful comedic point-and-click, and if you haven’t had the chance to play it yet – or want to play it over again – there’s good news. A team of ex-Telltale developers will bring us Sam and Max Save the World Remastered this December. Sam and Max Save the World (or Season One, if you were following the series before it got an official subtitle) originally launched episodically starting way back in 2006. The remastered version hits Steam and GOG (and Switch, if you’re into the whole console thing) on December 2, updated to run on modern machines with modern graphical features. The new release will run in 16:9 at whatever resolutions your PC can handle, and includes new keyboard or gamepad control schemes alongside the original point-and-click option. The game hasn’t been fully remade, but certain scenes have been tweaked with “new acting and camerawork”, and there are updates to the original character models, plus new original music, too. The remaster will launch for $19.99 / £15.49 / €16.79, but you’ll get a 50% discount if you own the original version of the game. (The devs will have you covered if you owned it Developer Skunkape Games is made up of former Telltale developers, and they’ve spoken at length with Vice Games about the struggles of bringing back the dog detective and rabbity thing. No word yet on whether the second and third seasons of Telltale’s Sam and Max will be getting the remaster treatment, but over on the official site there are already empty links waiting for them to be added.

  16. At least in road car applications, the W12 engine is a unique piece of engineering coming from the Volkswagen Group. The 6.0-liter WR12 48v, which utilizes a four-bank design, was the only mass-produced W12 engine for road cars when it was introduced in 2001. Since then, Volkswagen has used the 12-cylinder mill in a number of configurations, with Bentley the sole user of the current turbocharged setup for its cars like the Bentayga, Continental GT, and Flying Spur – at least until Audi announces its return to the A8, if at all. Gallery: 2021 Bentley Bentayga Speed W12: However, Bently announced that it will go fully electric by 2030, and by 2026, all vehicles in the British marque's lineup will be either plug-in hybrids or full EVs. This left a question about what the future holds for the revered W12, which currently doesn't have a hybrid application in any vehicle. This was answered by the company through a report by Autoblog. "No more W12," was the answer that the online publication got when they asked about the future of the engine. For those who are still not giving up on cylinders, you have six more years before the company completely drops it from the lineup. Then again, the W12 engine, despite its esteemed performance, is aging. With the automotive industry shifting to downsizing and electrification since way back, the fate of the W12 has already been decided even without official confirmation and maybe it's for the better. Emission regulations are there for a reason. Meanwhile, the bigger W16 engine is endemic to Bugatti hypercars, and that too could meet its end, though the French marque's pretty bullish about its quad-turbocharged mill – at least for now.

  17. Windows 10 has another nasty little gremlin that causes a PC to crash with a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), and as a result some folks have been blocked from upgrading to the May 2020 Update or October 2020 Update (which are the affected versions of the OS). As described by Microsoft in a support document, the bug happens when the user plugs in an external NVMe SSD into a Thunderbolt port. So obviously, this only affects folks who have the latter connector on their machine, as well as Windows 10’s driver related to said NVMe SSDs. Microsoft explains: “An incompatibility issue has been found with Windows 10, version 2004 or Windows 10, version 20H2 when using an Thunderbolt NVMe Solid State Disk (SSD). “On affected devices, when plugging in a Thunderbolt NVMe SSD you might receive a stop error with a blue screen and ‘DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION (e6) An illegal DMA operation was attempted by a driver being verified.’ “Affected Windows 10 devices will have at least one Thunderbolt port and any currently available version of the driver file stornvme.sys.” More widespread? The error could possibly be a bit more widespread in terms of affected users, at least going by a post on Microsoft’s Answers.com help forum, where a Lenovo laptop owner describes the blue screen error as coming out of nowhere when simply typing in Notepad – although obviously we can’t put too much stock in a single report. At any rate, Microsoft says it’s working on a resolution for the problem, and the software giant is hopeful that a fix can be delivered later in November. That being the case, the upgrade block will be lifted, and these Windows 10 PCs will be allowed to install the latest update (which is now the October 2020 Update, of course).

  18. It seems like you can run Doom on anything, and with the help of a Raspberry Pi, the NES is no exception. TheRasteri created the original concept for this project on YouTube (and his project was inspired by Howchoo's NES Raspberry Pi Cartridge project). But a maker known as Bakutendo has taken things a step further by developing a custom PCB that works with a Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+ to create a working NES cartridge. According to a blog post from Bakutendo, there are already plans to distribute the new PCB as a kit for developers to recreate this project at home. The details are subject to change, but the current parts list includes: One Raspberry Pi 3 Model A + One microSD card (at least 8GB) One FX2LP CY7C68013A USB Development Board One mini USB cable You can check out the final project in action here: The output doesn't handle any of the Doom sound effects, but you do get to hear the background music, and the graphics render enough actually to play on a real NES console. There is a full breakdown of the original project and details about the new PCB on Bakutendo's blog. Check out the full post from Bakutendo for more information and future updates on this project.

  19. A new Mass Effect game is in development, featuring some tenured developers. Developer BioWare confirmed the news as part of this year’s N7 Day. In a BioWare blog post announcing Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, a remaster of the first three games in the RPG game series, BioWare general manage Casey Hudson offhandedly states a new adventure’s in the works. “A veteran team has been hard at work envisioning the next chapter of the Mass Effect universe,” Hudson says. “We are in early stages on the project and can’t say any more just yet, but we’re looking forward to sharing our vision for where we’ll be going next.” A piece of concept art, viewable in the header, is shared, showing a ship and a crew on some alien planet or other. The last Mass Effect game was 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda, which got a lukewarm reception. BioWare put out Anthem last year, a multiplayer action-adventure game that didn’t fare much better and struggled to hold onto an audience. The studio has since spent much of this year working on a relaunch. Hudson talks up his enthusiasm for Mass Effect and the surrounding community, thanking fans for sticking with the space games for so long. “For me personally, Mass Effect represents years of work and countless special memories, so every year I feel incredibly fortunate to celebrate N7 Day with players around the world. Thank you so much for supporting us over the years.” BioWare’s still working on Dragon Age 4, in the meantime, and Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will launch early 2021. Dragon Age.
