Warner Bros has escalated tensions between Hollywood's studios and US cinemas with a decision to make all releases available to stream as soon as they hit the big screen. The move will enable film fans to watch the forthcoming sci-fi epic Dune and the Matrix sequel on HBO Max at the same time as their cinema release.Typically, new releases are shown exclusively at cinemas for months. But with many cinemas shut due to the virus, studio revenues have plunged. Is the era of the Hollywood blockbuster over Twelve films to watch in DecemberAs a result, Warner Bros said all of its 2021 releases would go straight to HBO Max, the streaming service owned by its ultimate parent company AT&T. The films will be available on the service, which is not yet available in the UK, for one month after release. The releases are expected to include Godzilla vs Kong, Mortal Kombat and The Suicide Squad.Warner Bros had already announced that its big budget Christmas action movie - Wonder Woman 1984 - would be available on HBO Max, as well as in cinemas. Ann Sarnoff, chair and chief executive of WarnerMedia Studios, said the pandemic called for "creative solutions". "No one wants films back on the big screen more than we do," she said. "We know new content is the lifeblood of theatrical exhibition, but we have to balance this with the reality that most theatres in the US will likely operate at reduced capacity throughout 2021." Another row Earlier in the year, US cinema chain AMC, which owns Odeon in the UK, banned all Universal films after the studio said it would release new movies at home and on the big screen on the same day. The two firms eventually agreed that Universal films can go to digital services after just 17 days of viewing in cinemas. Explaining Warner Bros' decision, Ms Sarnoff said the "unique one-year plan" would give "moviegoers who may not have access to theatres, or aren't quite ready to go back to the movies, the chance to see our amazing 2021 films". "We see it as a win-win for film lovers and exhibitors, and we're extremely grateful to our filmmaking partners for working with us on this innovative response to these circumstances."

Solo 13°, invece, Sebastian Vettel.

So much wine from Bordeaux falls either into the too expensive or too mediocre camp, but there are some great and affordable wines to look out for Paradise Rescued Block One Cabernet Franc, Bordeaux, France 2016 (£18, winebuyers.com) Bordeaux may be the world’s most famous red wine region, but how many people actually drink its produce these days? There’s a persistent sense, even among serious wine enthusiasts, that it’s become too polarised. On the one hand, some of the most expensive wines in the world, wines that are doomed, as the Observer’s David Mitchell put it recently, to become “investment wine, not drinking wine… notional, like a currency”. On the other, a sea of mediocre reds, with interchangeable names above the same line drawing of a château on the label. As a result, the region has begun to seem a little off the pace when compared to the dynamism of countless rising-star wine regions across the globe. But there’s much more to the enormous Bordeaux region than the twin extremes of the dull and the deluxe. With its uncharacteristically striking label, the swish, silky, fresh blackcurrant of Paradise Rescued Block One shows a different side to Bordeaux. Marks & Spencer Classics Claret, Bordeaux, France 2019 (£7, Marks & Spencer) Paradise Rescued is not your usual Bordeaux estate in other ways. It’s the work of an Englishman with a background in chemical engineering, David Stannard, who bought up the land around his holiday home in the village of Cardan, initially as a way of protecting it from developers, and then, as an increasingly serious wine project, overseen by local mother-and-daughter team Pascale and Albane Bervas. Both the wines that Stannard’s PR sent me to try (there’s also a merlot-cabernet franc blend), exhibit one of Bordeaux red wine’s most attractive features: that combination of ripe black and red fruit with an appetising freshness and some food-friendly tannin. In the recent run of warm vintages in the region, you can also find this combination in some superb-value everyday wines: your basic supermarket claret, such as M&S’s excellent, recently re-badged example, can be a crunchy-fruited, thirst-quenching, inexpensive joy.Château Lagrange Les Fiefs de Lagrange, St-Julien, Bordeaux, France 2016 (from £26, thewinesociety.com; farrvintners.com; crsfw.com) The very best wines from the top châteaux in Bordeaux’s rather rigid class system may be off-limits to most of us: even in the midst of a global pandemic, in which the top estates all dropped their prices significantly, the latest (2019) vintage of Château Lafite-Rothschild was still going for significantly more than £5,000 per case before tax and duty in UK merchants when it was sold en primeur (ie, before the wine has finished ageing) earlier this year. But that doesn’t mean that quality of the kind that will make you see why the region developed its fine wine reputation in the first place isn’t available to a slightly wider audience. One route is to buy one of the top estate’s so-called second wines, such as Château Pichon-Longueville’s polished, plush Tourelles de Longueville 2014 (£25, justerinis.com) and Château Lagrange’s elegant, fragrant Les Fiefs 2016, both of which capture much of the style, panache and resonant depth of their estate’s flagship productions at a fraction of the price.

Higher than expected tax revenue reveals state's stark economic divide in pandemic job losses Despite COVID, the state will have a $26 billion windfall heading into the next fiscal year. But the pandemic has further underscored the state's stark economic divide, as low-wage workers have been disproportionately affected by job losses. Courtesy Bishnu Sarangi/Pixabay.The good news: The recession California officials predicted in the early months of the coronavirus pandemic has not been as dire as they thought it would be, leaving the state with a $26 billion windfall heading into the next fiscal year. The bad news: A reason for the unanticipated cash reveals the state's stark economic divide. Pandemic-induced job losses have been concentrated among low-wage workers, who pay relatively little taxes to begin with, while wealthy residents have continued to make money and pay taxes, leading to much greater tax collections than officials predicted in early summer."We're ending up in a place where the overall fiscal picture of the state doesn't look nearly as bleak as the conditions for the people who are weathering the pandemic and all of its negative effects," said Chris Hoene, executive director of the California Budget and Policy Center."It's a very weird situation."That was the picture that emerged Wednesday as California's nonpartisan Legislative Analyst released an annual forecast that lawmakers will use in crafting next year's state budget. The report precedes Gov. Gavin Newsom's January budget proposal, which kicks off months of negotiations with the Legislature. Though the windfall will likely make some of their decisions easier, the report also came with a warning: California is heading toward a $17 billion deficit in three years because expenses are growing faster than revenue. That leaves lawmakers with two politically unappealing choices: make ongoing spending cuts or raise taxes."While the budget is better off than we had feared several months ago, deficits are still on the horizon, and better-than-expected revenues haven't translated into an economy that's fully rebounding," Newsom's finance spokesperson H.D. Palmer said in a statement."The state's 11 percent unemployment rate in September is still nearly three times its rate before the pandemic, and more than one in every five California workers are receiving some form of unemployment assistance."Legislative leaders were quick to say they hope to use some of the windfall to restore cuts made in this year's budget. That could include restoring $602 million to universities, reversing the roughly 10 percent pay cut state workers took, and canceling plans to delay some payments to schools and suspend some programs for people who are elderly and developmentally disabled. They also suggested using some of it to repay recent borrowing, prepare for emergencies and help people who don't have homes. "California is the fifth largest economy in the world, the cutting edge, but we have people hurting," said state Senate leader Toni Atkins, a San Diego Democrat. A forecast showing strong state finances likely sounds jarring to millions of Californians who are out of work, or strained by having their children home from school, or whose businesses have suffered from government-ordered shutdowns, Atkins said: "Not everybody feels this forecast. They don't feel it personally."Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon said he agreed with Atkins' priorities and also plans to push for a budget that allows schools to reopen safely, ensures distribution of a COVID vaccine when it becomes available and improves the Employment Development Department, which has been plagued with problems in the crush to distribute unemployment checks to millions of people.Republicans hold so few seats in the Legislature — about one-fourth — that they are essentially powerless in shaping the state budget. Still, GOP Sen. Jim Nielsen of Tehama urged his Democratic colleagues to be prudent, saying "This is the right time to reverse the state's borrowing from schools, replenish the Rainy Day Fund, pay down debt, and invest in struggling Californians."Illustrating the extremely unpredictable nature of the pandemic-era economy, the Legislative Analyst described how several factors combined to lead to the estimated $26 billion one-time surplus:-Californians paid more taxes than officials projected. -Unemployment did not get as bad as predicted.-Fewer people than the state budgeted for sought government-funded health care and food assistance.-The California-based tech industry is doing very well during the pandemic, contributing to a strong stock market."Many of us thought that state revenues were headed for a plunge in response to the severe economic pullback and COVID-19 pandemic," Legislative Analyst Gabe Petek told reporters in a video conference call."But as it turns out, revenues have proven to be much more resilient. And as a result of that — the difference between what the budget assumed and this more steady performance of the state tax revenues — we see a very large revenue windfall taking shape."He cautioned, however, that it remains difficult to predict economic conditions over the next year, given massive unknowns that could shape state finances for better or worse. Those include how bad the virus gets, how soon a vaccine becomes widely available and whether the federal government passes another stimulus package.Because of that uncertainty, this $26 billion windfall could be anywhere from $12 billion all the way up to $40 billion," Petek said. "And that's just within sort of what we consider a more likely range of outcomes."Translation: For California's finances, the unpredictable nature of 2020 is poised to continue in 2021.

Hyundai Motor America has agreed to pay a cash penalty of $54 million and other fines that could add up to $140 million. Kia Motors America was also fined and could pay as much as $70 million. This is the result of an inquiry by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into its recalls of the 2011–2014 Sonata and 2013–2014 Santa Fe Sport SUV, as well as Kia vehicles from 2011–2014 model years.Hyundai has created a dedicated engine recall website as part of the agreement, to ensure owners get timely information.Hyundai Motor America announced today that it has reached an agreement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) following an investigation into the way it conducted a recall. The problem involved the automaker's 2.0- and 2.4-liter Theta II engines in the 2011–2014 Hyundai Sonata and the 2013–2014 Santa Fe Sport, in which metal debris created during machining operations at the factory led to premature bearing wear and potential engine failure. NHTSA's investigation concluded that the automaker did not recall 1.6 million vehicles subject to the problem "in a timely fashion," as Reuters reported today, and that Hyundai did not give out accurate information about the recalls.Total penalties include a $54 million fine to be paid first, an agreement to put $40 million into improving safety operations, and a potential additional $46 million fine that may be levied later depending on how well Hyundai meets NHTSA's requirements in the newly issued Consent Order.Kia, through a separate Consent Order, was fined $27 million in cash penalties plus a potential later fine of $27 million, and the requirement to pay $16 million for safety process improvement. This is related to a separate recall including the 2011–2014 Optima, 2012–2014 Sorento, and 2011–2013 Sportage, also with the 2.0- and 2.4-liter Theta II engines, NHTSA's order said. The company will set up new IT systems "to better analyze safety data and identify potential safety issues," and it will set up a new field testing and inspection laboratory in the U.S., Hyundai said. Hyundai said that it has issued a second recall for recalled vehicles that have already had their engines replaced. The move is made "out of an abundance of caution," and the company said it will "inspect and confirm proper reinstallation of the fuel tube to the high-pressure fuel pump."Hyundai has created an engine recalls website for consumers who need more information about this recall. The site also covers a recall involving more Hyundai and Kia models that calls for a software update. The Hyundai website and NHTSA recall website also allow owners to find out if their vehicles are included. This content is created and maintained by a third party, and imported onto this page to help users provide their email addresses. Should you worry if you can’t get a routine dental appointment because of the pandemic? Can you be your own hygienist? And what if you have an emergency? Experts answer your questionsor many of us, the routine trip to the dentist is just one of the ways in which our lives have been disrupted in 2020. The British Dental Association (BDA) estimates that, since the March lockdown, dentists in England have provided nearly 19m fewer treatments than in the same period last year. What do you need to know about dental emergencies, and what more can you do to care for your teeth? We asked the experts. What dentistry services are currently available?Although some routine dental treatments are now available again, in the UK, surgeries’ operating capacity has been reduced and some are triaging patients according to their level of need and risk.If you would like to see your dentist, it is advisable to contact them by phone or email to see if it is necessary for you to visit. For up-to-date advice on accessing dental care in the UK, see the NHS website. What is the risk of catching coronavirus at the dentist?Although they are assumed to be at high risk of contracting Covid-19, a recent study of nearly 2,200 US dentists found that fewer than 1% tested positive in June. Professor Damien Walmsley, scientific adviser to the BDA, says dentists’ routine attention to infection control puts them at an advantage. “It’s almost second nature to us.”A heightened potential risk of coronavirus transmission is in the use of instruments such as dental drills or ultrasonic scalers, which create a fine mist. How are dentists adapting? The profession is still adapting its procedures as more becomes known about how the virus spreads. For example, some dentists have switched to handheld tools that are slower, but create less spray. “Everything’s a bit of a compromise,” says Walmsley.Access to services is improving. In England, the “fallow time” during which a treatment room must remain empty after any aerosol-generating procedure was recently reduced from an hour to 15-20 minutes (depending on ventilation), enabling dentists to see more patients. What can I do to care for my teeth while I can’t get to a dentist?“The majority of dental problems are preventable,” says Walmsley. Brushing your teeth in the morning and at night, for two minutes each time, will generally be enough to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Studies have shown, however, that people brush for an average of 43 seconds. “Four minutes a day is not a lot to ask,” says Dr Nigel Carter, the chief executive of the Oral Health Foundation. What kind of toothpaste should I use Any toothpaste with fluoride will do. Not only does it help to prevent tooth decay, but it slows down the rate of progression of any existing decay. Carter is concerned by the increasing availability of “natural” toothpastes without fluoride. Water fluoridation is not widespread in the UK, “so we really do Is it a good idea to switch to an electric toothbrush What you brush with is less important than brushing. Walmsley says a manual toothbrush is just as effective as a powered one if you brush for two minutes, twice a day. Some electric toothbrushes, however, have a timer – or even an app – to help you to be more thorough. “I can say from personal experience that it’s moved me from 1.5 minutes to 2 minutes,” says Carter of his electric toothbrush. How often should I replace my toothbrus Dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush or brush head every three months. Very few people do. “As a nation, we use 1.2, 1.3 heads a year,” says Carter. “There are a lot of very old, scraggy toothbrushes out there.” Does brushing your teeth reduce your coronavirus risk Martin Addy, emeritus professor of dentistry at the University of Bristol, has argued that more frequent brushing should be promoted alongside hand-washing to protect against coronavirus, as the antimicrobial agents in toothpaste and mouthwash reduce mouth bacteria. A link with brushing has not yet been substantiated, but last week a Cardiff University study found “promising signs” that mouthwash may help to kill coronavirus. Further research into how oral hygiene might factor into reducing coronavirus risk is under way. What else can I do apart from brushing thoroughly If you already floss regularly, stick with it. If you have yet to make it a habit, pick up some interdental brushes, which are easier to use than string floss. Interdental cleaning is especially important if you have a history of gum disease. Do it before you brush. What else should I be mindful of“Being conscious of what you’re eating and when is also vital for a healthy mouth,” says Nyree Whitley, group clinical director for the the dental care provider mydentist. Many people have been consuming more sugar and alcohol during the pandemic, which is detrimental to oral health over a prolonged period. Whitley suggests limiting snacks and consuming sugar only as part of a meal.

The capital of Ethiopia's northern Tigray region has come under heavy shelling from government forces, aid workers and regional officials say.The centre of Mekelle is being hit "with heavy weaponry and artillery," the ruling regional party said. The Ethiopian army has been locked in conflict with the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) for weeks. It says it hopes to seize the city from the TPLF within days, but will avoid harming its 500,000 civilians.Hundreds of people have reportedly been killed, and thousands have been forced from their homes as Ethiopian forces have seized towns. The Ethiopian military earlier said it had captured the town of Wikro, north of Mekelle, along with several other towns in the region.Details of the fighting are hard to confirm because all phone, mobile and internet communications with the Tigray region have been cut.Ethiopian soldiers accused of blocking border with Suda Why Ethiopia may be marching into guerrilla war Crisis has engulfed Ethiopia. Here’s what it meansWhat's the latest from the Tigrayan capital? TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael told Reuters in a text message that Mekelle was under "heavy bombardment", and said that government forces had started an operation to capture it. A separate TPLF statement, reported by AFP, urged "the international community to condemn the artillery and warplane attacks and massacres being committed". It also accused the Eritrean government of involvement in the attack on Mekelle. Aid agencies and diplomats have been told by residents there have been explosions in the north of the city. The Ethiopian government has not commented on the latest development. It said on Friday it had advanced to within 12 miles (20km) of the city and was beginning the "final phase" of an offensive.A spokeswoman for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Ethiopian forces would not "bombard" civilian areas."The safety of Ethiopians in Mekelle and Tigray region continues as priority for the federal government," Billene Seyoum added. Reuters quoted a diplomatic source as saying the TPLF had "mobilised lots of people in Mekelle". The person added: "They are digging trenches and everyone has an AK-47 [rifle]."Aid groups fear the conflict could trigger a humanitarian crisis and destabilise the Horn of Africa region. Ethiopia's state-appointed Human Rights Commission has accused a Tigrayan youth group of being behind a massacre this month in which it says more than 600 non-Tigrayan civilians in the town of Mai-Kadra were killed. The TPLF denied involvement. 2px presentational grey line What is the fighting about? The conflict is rooted in longstanding tension between Ethiopia's government and the TPLF, which was the dominant political force in the country until Mr Abiy came to power in 2018 and introduced far-reaching reforms. When Mr Abiy postponed a national election because of coronavirus in June, relations further deteriorated. The TPLF said the government's mandate to rule had expired, arguing that Mr Abiy had not been tested in a national election. In September the party held its own election, which the government said was "illegal".Then, on 4 November, Mr Abiy announced an operation against the TPLF, accusing it of attacking the army's northern command HQ in Mekelle.
