  1. One of the most neglected, yet most important features in Microsoft's software arsenal is finally getting a Windows 11 makeover, the company has revealed. With the launch of Windows 11 just weeks away, many of the company's top-end software tools and services have had upgrades or overhauls revealed, with the likes of Microsoft Teams and the Edge web browser set to sport new looks in the upcoming release. But we haven't really heard anything about how Recycle Bin will look in Windows 11 - until now. Here's our list of the best productivity software around Check out our list of the best collaboration tools available We've built a list of the best project management software out there Taking out the tras In the release notes for Windows 11 Build 22454.1000, Microsoft has finally confirmed some of the changes and updates we'll see for Recycle Bin in its next-generation software.Top of the list is a new-look menu for Recycle Bin when users right-click on the desktop icon. Known as a "context menu", this shows the range of actions available for users, providing more information and insight on the various tools within Windows 11. It seems that along with accessing the files within, deleting them, or seeing the tool's properties, users will now be able to pin Recycle Bin to the all-new Start taskbar using the context menu for the first time.Previously, users had to go through the "show more options" field on the context menu, saving time and hassle. Windows 11 Build 22454 is available to download now via the Windows Insider program, but you'll need a suitably high-powered PC, and be part of the Dev Channel to access the latest updates. Anticipation is growing for Windows 11 as the release date draws ever closer, with the launch set to be one of Microsoft's biggest ever events.A recent study found that over half of Windows users are planning to upgrade to the new OS at launch - however almost a quarter of users don't have a laptop or PC that meets the lofty minimum hardware requirements to upgrade at all. The new design also seems to be splitting opinion, with 53% voting in favor of the new look, while 21% think it closely resembles Windows 10, and 13% admitting that the look of Windows 11 isn't to their taste.
  2. Microsoft continues to double down on its assertion that the Windows 11 system requirements are absolutely necessary, and this whole TPM 2.0 schtick is vital for the safety of you, your PC, and maybe even the world. Okay, I made that last bit up, but the big M is sticking to its guns and has released another video (via Videocardz) backing its decision on excluding a whole lot of hardware that was fine with Windows 10.The latest claim is that you're going to see fewer blue screens of death—or maybe black screens of death—because of the new system requirements, citing a "99.8% crash-free experience in the [Windows 11] preview."Look, there's still a part of us that feels at some point in the future, maybe the distant future, Microsoft will turn around and say 'You know, what? We don't mind what processor you use with Windows 11,' but for right now this is where we're at. You need a modern CPU for Windows 11 for security and reliability. And maybe a little performance. "So the requirement for Intel 8th Gen and AMD Ryzen 2000-series, and newer, chipsets does definitely contribute to performance," states Microsoft VP Steve Dispensa in the recent video. "But the main rationale here is actually the balanced security with performance. Security is at the core of these requirements."He does point to differences in how Windows 11 prioritises apps running in the foreground window. With the system running at 90% CPU load, it's still possible to get a responsive experience opening and using foreground apps thanks to these prioritisations."Under the hood, we've done a lot of work in memory management to favour the app windows we have running in the foreground, so that they're prioritised with more CPU and other system resources."He also suggests that the Edge browser's sleeping tabs can help reduce memory demands by 32% and CPU usage by 37% on average. It's worth pointing out those numbers relate purely to the browser experience, and with sleeping tabs on and off, not a measure of the performance difference that Windows 11 itself is offering. But while the system requirements and their focus on TPM 2.0 compatibility for security isn't that sexy a reason for ditching slightly older CPUs, having an OS that crashes only 0.2% percent of the time might be more attractive to potential users. "We've also focused on reliability," he continues. "So supported CPUs use the new windows DCH drivers, and are supported by our OEM and our silicon partners… Now with these new chips, and the driver model, we're now seeing a 99.8% crash free experience in the preview." Still, it's all just messaging that means the same thing: These are the Windows 11 system requirements and you're just going to have to live with it. At least for now, while Microsoft continues to confuse us all.
  3. An adapter usually intended for high-end cameras could help expand Xbox storage space, but there's still further testing to be done. An enterprising modder has figured out a way to plug a standard NVMe SSD into the Xbox Series X|S storage expansion slot—not only increasing the console's storage capacity, but potentially opening it up to further unofficial expansion with NVMe SSDs, such as those found in a modern gaming PC.The Xbox Series X|S comes with a 1TB internal drive as standard. That might sound plentiful, but as we well know games are becoming real mighty storage hogs. So, to counter growing file sizes, the latest Xbox offers expandable storage through the use of an officially certified Seagate expansion drive. That's the only guaranteed way to expand your Xbox Series S|X storage without issue, but we're now hearing there could be an unofficial option that utilises more standard NVMe SSDs instead.Spotted by VGC, user Huashan Lunjian on Bilibili has outlined a how-to guide on expanding the Xbox Series X|S storage using just a modern NVMe SSD and a CFexpress (CFe) to NVMe adapter. They explain the switcheroo like this: the Xbox Series X|S utilises two PCIe 4.0 x2 connections for storage, one for the internal drive and another for the expansion slot. That's the same standard used by the latest gaming PCs to connect NVMe SSDs and add-in cards, such as a graphics card, to a system's CPU and memory.Further to that, both Xbox and PC use the NVMe protocol for rapid storage access, attached via PCIe.So you've actually got uniformity in the protocols used between Xbox and PC for storage in NVMe and PCIe. That's not particularly surprising because the Xbox Series S|X consoles are essentially just compact AMD-powered PCs.In theory, then, all that is required to get an NVMe SSD built for a PC working with an Xbox Series S|X is converting its M.2 key connection to the CFe connection used by both the Xbox and Seagate official expansion drives. The CFe connection is most often found on high-end camera storage and uses NVMe protocols over PCIe lanes for high bandwidths. The latest CFe specification maxes out at PCIe Gen3 x4, for a max speed of 4GB/s, which is actually a little different from the Xbox Series S|X, but that doesn't appear to be much of an issue as they offer equal bandwidth. M.2 to CFe adapters are fairly easy to find on Ebay or Aliexpress, although you'll have to purchase at your own risk as we've not tested any ourselves. These all feature an M.2 keyed slot, with screw support for various sizes of M.2 (ensure you choose the right one), that extends into a CFe slot, such as that found on the official Seagate drive. With an NVMe SSD loaded into the adapter, and installed in the console's storage expansion slot, it is possible to locate the drive and access the extra capacity within the console's settings menu.Though some question marks remain, such as whether a wide-range of SSDs are supported and which will actually work via an adapter. The author of the guide notes that they have so far only tested the process with the same Western Digital NVMe SSD found within the Xbox Series X|S, the WD SN530 M.2 2230. That's quite a small NVMe drive by PC's standards, and is actually physically limited by its size as to what capacity it can offer. Larger drives, such as those more commonly found in gaming PCs, may be able to deliver greater capacities, but so far they're largely untested. At least one camera CFe storage card has been proven not to work with the system, but that doesn't rule out other NVMe SSDs. Similarly, who's to say Microsoft won't take great offence to this workaround and patch out the functionality. As the user notes: "it should be a necessary condition for the hard disk to support PCIe 4.0. It is not clear whether there is a limit on the size of the hard disk, and whether PCIe 4.0 x4 is possible. If possible, a large number of hard disks such as PM9A1 can be used." In the end you've got to weigh up the price of an NVMe SSD and a CFe adapter combined, and judge whether that's offering you more than buying the simplicity of the official $200 Seagate expansion card. It's a little riskier, to say the least, but if you are able to expand your console's internal storage with one of the best PCIe 4.0 SSDs in a much higher capacity that what's available officially that might just free up some storage concerns for all you digital game hoarders out there.
  4. The rally-honed Subaru WRX has been reborn for 2022 with a new platform, overhauled interior and heavily upgraded chassis – but it still uses a turbocharged boxer engine and offers a manual gearbox. The fifth-generation WRX, which has been marketed separately from the Impreza on which it is based since 2015, arrives three years after its predecessor was pulled from the UK. And, like its closely related BRZ sibling, it will not be sold in the UK. Subaru’s UK managing director, John Hurtig, told Autocar last year this decision was taken to allow the brand to focus on its more mainstream SUV line-up. “[The WRX] was a performance car, a rally car,” Hurtig said. “It was a good era in UK. But it’s history. It’s a long time ago now. It has nothing really to do with the Subaru brand as it is today.” Power comes from Subaru’s new 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine – a format used by every WRX since the Mk1 of 1992. Here, it pumps 271bhp and 258lb ft (43bhp and 74lb ft more than the naturally aspirated unit in the BRZ). Power goes to both axles via a six-speed manual gearbox or a new automatic Subaru Performance Transmission (SPT) said to offer 30% faster upshifts and 50% faster downshifts. The torque curve has been broadened to give peak output from 2000rpm to 5200rpm and Subaru claims the extra 400cc of displacement – along with a new electronically controlled turbo wastegate and bypass valves – improves the throttle response. One of the most significant evolutions for the WRX is the switch to Subaru’s new Global Platform, shared with the Outback estate and Forester crossover. This is claimed to bring “a substantial upgrade in ride and handling performance”, with increased chassis stiffness and a lower centre of gravity. It’s said to have 28% more torsional rigidity than the previous chassis and the rear stabiliser bar is now mounted directly to the body (rather than the subframe) for flatter cornering performance.
  5. Our spaces are museums to ourselves. The pictures I hang reveal the versions of myself I want to express to the world ast week, for the first time, I hung some pictures on the wall. I don’t know why it took so long. I suspect the reaction of previous landlords helped, instilling the fear of God in me about damage to walls. (A friend of mine had a tenancy clause so brutal, it expressly stated no hanging of pictures using nails, adhesives, Blu-Tack or even sticky tape.)Or maybe it’s because that one poster I put up on my bedroom door at Mum’s is still there: a reproduction of a 1970s Garfield cartoon showing him in a cravat and silk gown, saying, “I was just an ordinary cat until I went to school.” Every time I walk past it, I am reminded of the young me that lived in that room, a lover of all things retro-Americana, eagerly awaiting university as my ticket out of the neighbourhood and perpetual skintness, with zero idea of the recession around the corner. It’s a weird feeling. Regardless, the idea that our spaces are museums to ourselves, that what we display is significant and never trivial, solidified in my mind. And so, being unsure which version of me I wanted to preserve under museum glass, which self I wanted to express on the wall, I chose to show nothing. Until now. They say that the key to self-expression is confidence – knowing who you are and what you want to say. But I disagree. The key to self-expression is a delete button, a pencil eraser or, in my case, learning how to use a truly heavenly substance known among mortals as wall filler. Each gives a person the power to experiment, to change, to morph, and what could be more important to self-expression than that? I still don’t know which me I want to put on the walls, but armed with a scraper and Polyfilla, I’m about to find out. And maybe, just maybe, there will be a space for Garfield.

  7. Facebook and Ray-Ban have partnered up to create a pair of smart glasses that could launch very soon. A microsite on Ray-Ban's website shows a silhouette of the upcoming wearable and, apart from one key detail, it doesn't divulge any information about what to expect from the pair. Earlier this week, Andrew Bosworth, Facebook Reality Labs VP apparently teased the smart glasses with a point-of-view video recording. The upcoming smart glasses are expected to come with a few augmented reality (AR) features, probably similar to the ones found on Snapchat's Snap Spectacles. The microsite on Ray-Ban's official website, as mentioned, shows a silhouette of a pair of glasses along with Ray-Ban and Facebook logos. The teaser also mentions a date: September 9, 2021. Additionally, the microsite has an option for users to sign up for a 'release notification'. It is not explicitly mentioned if the smart glasses will debut on Thursday, September 9.Earlier this week, Bosworth shared a video on Twitter, which seems to be teasing the upcoming wearable. He shared a point-of-view video recording of him and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The video, however, doesn't mention anything about the expected Facebook x Ray-Ban smart glasses nor does it show them.Facebook Algorithm Fuelled Misinformation Spread Over Factual News: StudyLast year, Facebook had announced that it will launch its smart glasses — with Ray-Ban — in 2021. Earlier this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg also confirmed that Facebook's next hardware launch would be smart glasses. Facebook is also working on creating true AR glasses but has said that it would take at least 5 years for those to be released. The upcoming smart glasses are expected to be shaped as one of Ray-Ban's iconic frames, with some AR features on top. The specifications of the smart glasses are not known yet. 8. Microsoft is preparing an update for the web-based version of Word that will address a frustrating collaboration shortcoming. According to a new entry in the company’s product roadmap, Word Online will soon benefit from a new Simple Markup view that minimizes the amount of on-screen clutter generated by suggested edits and comments.“Simple Markup view keeps suggestions from others - both tracked changes and comments - on the periphery, allowing you to focus on the document itself while remaining aware that there are suggestions present,” Microsoft explained. We've built a list of the best office software aroundCheck out our list of the best spreadsheet software out thereHere's our list of the best presentation software on the marketThe new Word Online feature, which has long been available with the offline version, is set to roll out at some point next month. Microsoft Word updateWith the rise of remote working during the pandemic, real-time online document collaboration took on a much more prominent role; no longer could two colleagues crowd around a desk to hash out a draft. In these scenarios, Google Docs has long had the beating of Microsoft Word, with a much cleaner comment system, user interface and @ mention functionality. And more generally, Google Workspace (née G Suite) was built for the web from the ground up, so the productivity suite lends itself more naturally to online collaboration. However, with the latest update for Word Online, Microsoft is aiming to close the gap somewhat with a document view that does away with clutter on the page itself, instead pushing any markup to the margins. The hope is that colleagues will be able to collaborate on documents more efficiently, avoiding any confusion or miscommunication that might arise as a result of messy markup. In all likelihood, the new Simple Markup view will be housed under the Review tab, as is the case with the offline version of Word.

  9. Updated APUs with Navi 2 graphics could arrive before AMD's next-gen Zen 4 CPUs. One of the more active leakers in the Twittersphere, Greymon55, claims a new round of APUs from AMD have entered into mass production and will be unveiled during CES. These would bear the Ryzen 6000 series branding, but are not likely to be based on Zen 4. Making sense of the ever-changing rumor landscape is no easy task, in part because there are so many different product lines and a bevy of codenames to go along with them. Then there is the usual disclaimer that comes with sifting through unconfirmed leaks and rumors—nothing is ever written in stone until, in this case, AMD busts out its chisel and hammer. So what exactly are we looking at here? According to Greymon55, "Rembrandt" is what has entered the mass production phase, meaning the chip design is finalized and being produced in large quantity, and will soon ship out to customers. The folks at Videocardz have put together a handy chart outlining the various CPU/APU codnames and what chip families each one belongs to. Nothing beyond the Zen 3 column is official, but if leaked roadmaps end up being accurate, Rembrandt will comprise AMD's Ryzen 6000 series APUs featuring Zen 3+ CPU cores built on a 6-nanometer manufacturing process, and RDNA 2 graphics (the same architecture powering the Radeon RX 6000 series). It's worth noting that back in April, it was rumored AMD had cancelled its planned Zen 3+ refresh, but that was in reference to its desktop CPUs, not its APUs. Then in June, AMD unveiled a new 3D chiplet technology called 3D V-cache, and confirmed it would be applying it to current generation Zen 3 CPUs. So we know for sure that AMD is planning to launch a new round of Zen 3 CPUs with the added benefit of 3D V-cache, which is claimed to deliver a 15% boost in gaming performance. That being the case, it makes perfect sense why a Zen 3+ refresh for AMD's desktop CPUs would be cancelled. In its place, Zen 3 CPUs outfitted with new 3D V-cache will fill the gap between now (well, soon) and when Zen 4 arrives next year. Speaking of which, Greymon55 posted a follow-up tweet saying, "AMD's packaging plants in mainland China will complete six new products in the first half of next year." The leaker did not mention Zen 4 specifically, but assuming that's an accurate statement, I'd be surprised if it wasn't among the half a dozen "new products" on tap to be packaged. What exactly that means in terms of launch timing is anyone's guess. Past leaks have suggested Zen 4 will arrive in the fall of 2022, and Greymon55's tweet doesn't necessarily contradict that.
  10. Alan Wake will be picking up his infamously inefficient torch again this year, returning to the charming—and slightly deadly—town of Bright Falls in a 4K remaster of the 2010 horror romp. Wake's misadventures during a bout of writer's block made a big splash when it appeared a decade ago, and not just because he stays in a lake house. It also managed to impress us a couple of years later, when it came to PC. We gave it a very respectable 86 in our Alan Wake review. Fans have been clamouring for a return to Bright Falls for years, a hunger that only grew when it became clear that Control was set in the same universe, culminating in some Alan Wake-themed DLC. Remedy is also working on an unannounced game in the Control/Alan Wake shared universe, which could be Alan Wake 2. Or maybe not! It's in full production at the moment, so hopefully we'll find out in the not-too-distant future. A remaster might not sate the appetites of those holding out for a sequel, but after ten years there are probably a lot of you eager for a repeat that looks a bit fancier. This version will contain the main game and two expansions, all gussied up thanks to a 4K rework, along with a commentary from creative director and face of Max Payne Sam Lake. If you need a refresher or missed it the first time around, Alan Wake is a fusion of Twin Peak's surreal small town intrigue and the horror stylings of Stephen King. Inanimate objects become possessed monsters, townsfolk become shadow-corrupted killers and at all times you're left questioning what's real. At least when you're not questioning where the hell the light switch is. Bright Falls gets very dark. Wake's a thoroughly unlikeable protagonist, and the combat twist where enemies are only vulnerable when you shine your torch at them—when you aren't desperately looking for more batteries—wears thin, but the journey is riveting regardless. And I came out the other end realising that the stressful fights and the constant need to find a working light did wonders to put me in Wake's sweaty shoes. The episodic structure—it's a complete package, but still broken up into discrete 'episodes'—was also extremely welcome. It enhances the Twin Peaks, Twilight Zone vibes, but I also appreciated the affect this has on the pace, and the way it offers you breaks from the intense horror. Sometimes you just need the game to tell you that it's OK to make a sandwich or save the section for tomorrow. Remedy announced the remaster in an open letter from Sam Lake on The Sudden Stop, a community site that's been around since 2012. Remedy says it wanted to give the announcement to one of its most passionate communities to thank the fans for their decade of support—a classy move.
  11. The best thing that happened in my two hours of walking around outside squinting at my phone to play The Witcher: Monster Slayer came in the first five minutes or so. In the opening tutorial quest, I investigated a monster attack that left a horse's decapitated head lying on the ground. Except in my game, after I flicked on augmented reality to make The Witcher's monsters appear in the "real" world on my phone screen, the severed horse head hovered a couple feet off the ground, embedded in a parking sign. If the AR feature were consistently that funny, it might've saved Monster Slayer from being such a boring and disappointing use of the Witcher setting. The Witcher: Monster Slayer is a Pokémon Go knock-off that pushes you to venture out into the world to fight creatures from The Witcher's fantasy world on random street corners. For the most part this means manically swiping your finger across your phone screen to swing a sword. I'll charitably say that it has a little depth because you can swipe quickly for fast attacks or slowly for strong ones. But I'd honestly rather play Fruit Ninja. At least the fruit splits in half in a fun way when you chop it; Monster Slayer's monsters mostly just stand there as you swipe away. There is more to Monster Slayer overall: There's a thin story to give some structure to your afternoon walk, and you can collect and craft potions, oils and bombs to use in combat against particular creatures. There's a simple level-up system for increasing your stats to deal slightly more damage and eventually unlock more magical signs to attack with. Monsters have certain vulnerabilities you can learn to fight them more effectively. Basically, Monster Slayer takes lots of things I like from The Witcher 3 and puts them in a game that I have no interest in actually playing. Swiping my finger on the screen as quickly as I can isn't fun. It's tedious, and seems poorly designed for Android phones like mine which have gesture navigation enabled by default. Several times I swiped too close to the side of the screen and minimized the app. Other times it just crashed on me in the middle of combat, which was also annoying but at least didn't feel like my fault. Monster Slayer is just a poor mash-up of ideas. Pokémon Go works because there's something cute and a little magical about the idea of catching Pokémon out in the real world. Running into nekkers and grave hags on the street and stabbing them to death is just kinda… gross.
  12. Cupra has unveiled its new Tavascan Extreme E concept at this year’s Munich Motor Show, which will compete in the next season of the all-electric Extreme E off-road racing series. The Spanish brand also says the concept racer shares elements of its design language with the road-going Tavascan electric SUV, previewing some styling features of the forthcoming 2024 production car. When it goes on sale, the Tavascan will be the company’s second electric vehicle after the Cupra Born hatchback.Cupra’s styling tweaks over its current Extreme E racer include a slightly reshaped front bumper, a modified rear diffuser and a new livery that was designed to stand out from the racing series’ arctic, desert, glacial and ocean-side backdrops. The brand’s engineers have also used natural flax fibres for as much of the car’s bodywork as possible, to reduce the amount of carbon fibre in its structure and lower its environmental impact. Cupra says the material has similar properties to carbon fibre, too, and could easily be adapted for use in production vehicles. The LED headlight clusters are another new addition and feature a similar triangular design to the Tavascan concept, mounted in a new 3D-printed frame.Cupra says this latter innovation will give its racer a competitive edge by allowing the team to adapt to changes quickly, be it because of accident damage or a change to the headlight position to improve visibility. A replacement mount can be printed in just six hours, without the need for heavy fabrication equipment. The racer is powered by a 54kWh battery mounted behind the cockpit for optimum weight distribution. This supplies an all-electric powertrain, which Cupra says delivers a 0-62mph time of around four seconds. The current Extreme E spec racer, called the Odyssey 21, is manufactured by Spark Racing Technology and features a battery from Williams Advanced Engineering. The twin-motor powertrain serves up 536bhp, with the spec of car set to be carried through to the 2022 season. Alejandro Agag, founder and CEO of Extreme E, said: “I am delighted to see Cupra launch the Cupra Tavascan Extreme E concept as it enables it to become the second manufacturer to use its own bodywork for its Extreme E team. “This move not only injects added style and personality into the series, but also supports our goals for Extreme E to prove itself as a global marketing showcase for partners, as Cupra prepares to launch this model to consumers in the future.”
  13. Scientists have discovered what causes the waxy residue on the surface of your tea, with possible solutions ranging from a drop of lemon juice to moving house Name: Tea scum. Age: Literally ancient. Appearance: A grotty, cuppa-topping oil slick. Is this some sort of horrible slur? No, not at all. Although “tea scum” may sound like something that a violent coffee enthusiast may spray paint on the front door of someone who prefers PG Tips, we’re talking about the actual thing. What actual thing? You make a cup of tea and let it sit for a few minutes, only to be confronted by a grotesque waxy film on the surface when you bring it up to your mouth. Oh yes, that. I always put that down to my partner stirring my tea with a dirty spoon because they hate me. Fortunately, that is not the case. Your partner may hate you, but it has been revealed that tea scum is caused by a simple chemical process. Really? Clearly you don’t read the scientific journal the Physics of Fluids, because that’s all anyone there can talk about. Fine then, talk me through it. Scientists at the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health in Zurich, discovered that tea leaves contain compounds called polyphenols. These have a habit of bonding with calcium carbonate in tap water. And when this happens, a film tends to appear at the surface of the tea cup. That’s disgusting. No, it isn’t. The film is flavourless and harmless to consume. The worst thing it does is slightly hinder the tea’s aroma. Unless you are an intolerable aesthete, you have nothing to worry about. But I am an intolerable aesthete! It’s still not the end of the world. Scientists have discovered ways to mitigate the forming of the film. Please tell me, immediately. Well, you could add a drop of lemon juice to your tea, since this was discovered to produce a thinner film of scum. Alternatively, start drinking Earl Grey, because the acidity of bergamot rinds in the blend has the same effect.Done. Also, you may want to consider moving house.Pardon? The biggest factor that influences tea scum is the hardness of the water. Areas where tap water contains more dissolved minerals – such as the south-east of England and most of Ireland – give the polyphenols more to bond with, which leads to more scum. But tea drinkers in soft-water areas such as the West Country, Wales, the north-west and Scotland will find much less scum. Fine, I’ll move! Also, drink your tea black. Milk makes the scum worse. What am I, a monster? I’d rather drown in tea scum than drink black tea. Suit yourself.Do say: “If you want a decent cup of tea, move to Cornwall.”Don’t say: “Especially if you’re moving from London. The locals love that.”
  14. The phrases have tripped off the tongues of Taliban for quite some time."We're working to establish an inclusive government that represents all the people of Afghanistan," promised Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar when he recently arrived in Kabul to start talks aimed at forming a leadership to move the movement from guns to government."We would like to live peacefully," vowed Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid at the first press conference in the capital after the Taliban suddenly swept into power on 15 August. "We don't want any internal enemies and any external enemies."Judge them by their actions, not their words, has become the mantra of a fast-expanding league of Taliban watchers including Afghans, foreign governments, humanitarian chiefs and political pundits the world over. But Afghans are watching most closely of all. They have to. On a day when brave protesters with bold banners spilled into the streets of Kabul and other cities - Afghan women leading the charge to demand their rights, their representation, their roles in society - the new Taliban government was unveiled. Was this more evidence of the media-savvy Taliban? It temporarily knocked news of Taliban firing guns in the air, wielding rifle butts and sticks to disperse protesters, out of the world's headlines. But it was a modest ceremony, in the mundane setting of a press conference, for such a momentous, much-anticipated message. It electrified social media, and delivered a gut punch to those who had held fast to Taliban promises.Far from being inclusive, it is exclusively Taliban. The old organigram of the Taliban movement, with its commissions, deputies, and the all-powerful Emir Hibatullah Akhundzada, has been transplanted into a cabinet with the same political architecture of governments everywhere. The reviled Ministry of Vice and Virtue is back; the Women's Affairs Ministry is out. Its makeup is overwhelmingly drawn from Pashtun tribes, with only one Tajik and one Hazara, both Talibs. There's not a single woman, not even in deputy minister positions. It's a government of the old guard, and the new generation of mullahs and military commanders: men in charge when the Taliban ruled in the 1990s who return, beards much lighter and longer; former Guantanamo Bay prisoners; current members of US and UN black lists; battle-hardened fighters who pressed forward on every front in recent months; self-styled peacemakers who sat around negotiating tables, and shuttled around regional capitals with promises of a new Taliban 2.0.
