Ferrari has announced that the hybrid all-wheel-drive SF90 Stradale will be getting a retractable-hardtop variant. The SF90 Spider is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 with three electric motors and produces 986 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. It'll arrive in the U.S. toward the end of next year. In 2013, the 950-hp LaFerrari, Ferrari's first hybrid, arrived along with other electrically assisted hypercars from McLaren and Porsche. Seven years later, the hybrid that's currently dominating the Italian supercar maker's lineup is the 986-hp SF90 Stradale plug-in-hybrid supercar. Ferrari is announcing today that the SF90 will be available as a Spider variant with a retractable hard top that, when stowed, keeps the same styling profile as the coupe. A 796-hp 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 is still at the heart of the SF90 Spider, which gets assistance from three electric motors—two on the front axle and one between the engine and transmission—that add an additional 217 ponies, making the droptop's total power output 986 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system help send the Spider to 62 mph in an estimated 2.5 seconds with a top speed of 211 mph—the same figures as the SF90 Stradale coupe. The SF90 Spider is equipped with a retractable hard top, which can raise and lower in 14 seconds and won't deform at high speeds like a traditional soft top. To achieve peak downforce, Ferrari added a shut-off Gurney flap in the rear and an active control system that adjusts downforce over the rear axle. To keep air flowing into the engine bay, the intake vents directly behind the roof were adjusted transversely behind the Spider's rear screen to account for the retractable hardtop's stowage compartment. Like the Stradale coupe, the SF90 Spider is equipped with touch-sensitive steering wheel buttons that include headlight, windshield wiper, and turn signal controls as well as the 16-inch digital gauge cluster's controls. Head-up display is standard, and the lightweight, track-focused Assetto Fiorano handling package is also available on the Spider, which gives it a unique livery, and adds Multimatic spool-valve dampers, carbon fiber, and sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber. The 2021 Ferrari SF90 Spider will arrive in the U.S. toward the end of next year starting at the equivalent of $558,000.

Fun as it is to hit the slopes with friends, one skier’s thirst for adventure and desire to connect with the mountains means she often prefers to explore on her own by Abigail Butcher I’m sitting in the sunshine on a picnic bench, on the slopes above Courchevel 1650 in France, eating a ham and cheese sandwich I made at the morning breakfast buffet. It’s a simple pleasure – a peaceful, quiet and unrushed lunch – with a stunning backdrop. After a swig of water, I get out my piste map and work out where next to explore – I don’t feel like anything too strenuous after a busy morning covering a lot of ground around Les 3 Vallées. Such is the joy of skiing alone; you can please yourself entirely. I first started going skiing on my own about 20 years ago when I joined a learn-to-snowboard week run by Crystal in Söll, Austria. I made full use of the social activities organised by the tour operator and returned with many new friends. I’d chosen to take the leap as none of my skiing buddies wanted to spend a week learning to snowboard, and I didn’t want to go on a ski holiday with the usual gang and miss out on any on-slope fun while I was off mastering a new skill. As it turns out, I stuck firmly with my skis, but going to the mountains on my own became a habit from there on. Last winter, I took this to extremes by joining a ski touring trip that took me beyond my wildest dreams. We skied long distances off the beaten track in pristine conditions, far from any lifts. When we needed to travel uphill we attached “climbing skins” to our skis to stop us slipping backwards. Our reward for all that effort? The sheer exhilaration of sweeping downhill with the wind in our hair. Over the years, I’ve found that my thirst for adventure and learning new skills is best explored alone – or at least with a group I don’t know. That way, it’s easier to align yourself with people of a similar ability – when you ski, you like to be pushed a bit, but not too much. Holidaying with a mixed-ability group of friends can be either frustrating or daunting. But it’s not just the prospect of being well matched on the slopes that prompts me to go solo. The mountains hold an almost religious allure; they make me feel calm and help put my worries in proportion, and skiing alone offers a simple slice of me-time that I crave in my busy life. I find I can concentrate more on what I’m doing and connect with new people and surroundings in a way that I don’t when distracted by skiing with friends – as nice as that sometimes is.Solo skier on the slopeThinking about that trip in Söll, walking alone into a busy bar was quite daunting, but it was good to push out of my comfort zone and make friends that I might not have done had I been with pals. A few years later though, I spent a weekend in Zermatt, Switzerland, wondering whether my love affair with solo skiing was over as I sat each night eating on my own at my brilliant-value family-run hotel. Looking back, that awkwardness and loneliness was probably down to the fact that I’d just broken up with a boyfriend, and would have felt “alone” eating supper in my own home.Undeterred, I went on to do a skills-improver course in Switzerland, and on this trip I made a friend for life. She’s a florist in Kent, and we still visit each other annually. As time has passed, I’ve discovered a love of ski touring that is shared by only a couple friends, both of whom have busy family lives. So to indulge that passion, I’ve taken solo trips both for group day tours and for treks that involve staying overnight in mountain huts.Planning my trips is easy – there are no “reply-all” emails or the endless pinging of WhatsApp group messages and the divvying of costs. You can book flights to suit you, rather than an entire group. There are no split restaurant bills when one person has drunk an entire bottle of wine while you’ve sipped water (or vice versa) and, of course, you can take that packed lunch up the mountain and eat it in the great outdoors.

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk says he "most likely" has a "moderate case" of Covid-19 but has been "getting wildly different results from different labs".The boss of Tesla and SpaceX, who is 49, tweeted his symptoms were those of a "minor cold". On Friday he said he had been tested four times, with two positive and two negative results. Mr Musk appeared to play down concerns about the pandemic when it first hit.Covid-19 has now infected nearly 10.9 million people in the US.More than 245,000 people have died there, and more than 67,000 people are currently in hospital. Some 35 US states now require face coverings to be worn in public and many are urging residents to stick to social distancing amid fears their health care systems will be swamped with infected patients. Mr Musk, who has 40 million followers on Twitter, said about his symptoms that he was "a little up & down. Feels just like a regular cold, but more body achy & cloudy head than coughing/sneezing". On Friday, he had questioned the veracity of rapid antigen testing, tweeting: "Something extremely bogus is going on. Was tested for covid four times today. Two tests came back negative, two came back positive. Same machine, same test, same nurse."He said he was awaiting the results of PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests, which are regarded as the gold standard by epidemiologists and the one used most around the world.

DETROIT — General Motors on Friday said it is recalling more than 68,000 Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles, a month after regulators began investigating whether they were at risk of catching fire.GM said it has identified five Bolt fires — two more than NHTSA cited in opening a preliminary evaluation of the matter. The fires possibly relate to high-voltage batteries produced by LG Chem in South Korea, GM said. The automaker and NHTSA are still working to determine the cause of the issue, but GM plans to have a remedy as soon as possible after the first of the year, Jesse Ortega, the Bolt's executive chief engineer, told reporters. In October, NHTSA said it had received two complaints claiming "the vehicles caught fire under the rear seat while parked and unattended." NHTSA also found a 2017 Bolt with a similar pattern. GM and NHTSA found two cases of smoke inhalation related to the fires but there are no other known injuries. The recall covers Bolts from the 2017-19 model years. Of the 68,667 being recalled, 50,925 were sold in the U.S.GM does not believe all recalled vehicles are affected. Bolts built for the 2017 and 2018 model years used the LG Chem batteries made in South Korea. For the 2019 model year, some Bolts were built with the Korean batteries, while others used LG Chem batteries made in Holland, Mich. GM said 2020 Bolts are not affected because they were built with a different battery chemistry that increased range. In each of the five confirmed cases, the batteries were at or near their maximum charge, Ortega said.GM planned to notify dealers and customers of the recall Friday. The automaker is telling customers who have a 2017 or 2018 Bolt that they can drive using Hilltop Reserve mode until a software update is available. It is instructing owners of 2019 models to set their battery charge to a maximum of 90 percent. GM said it's releasing a video Friday to show customers how to change the settings in their Bolt vehicles.Once a fix is available, dealers should update new and used Bolts' software before they are sold, GM said.

Looking stylish is a smokescreen, says Annalisa Barbieri, where and why did you learn to be quiet and invisible? I am a 63-year-old woman who, about 10 years ago, realised I am not seen as physically attractive by others. I have had a few partners in my life, though I didn’t settle with any of them. Recently, I concluded that I would be unlikely to make another close relationship and have focused on making a good life for myself.I have since looked back over my life and re-evaluated many seemingly small experiences that affected me badly, such as a singing course on which one girl received a huge amount of attention from the leader. Late in the course, he was shocked to find that I have a good singing voice. As a not-attractive woman, it is harder to be heard. I wonder how different my life might have been if I had been better looking.I don’t believe I am unattractive, but I am almost invisible (this isn’t to do with age: I always have been). I am quiet and there are many reasons for this, but all of these microreactions since early childhood might have been a factor: people are less likely to look at, and engage with, less attractive people. I have always quite liked the way I look. I see myself as youngish, energetic and fairly stylish. However, I worry that I actually appear frumpy to others. It is difficult to talk to friends about this – either they are embarrassed, or very positive and emphasise my qualities. One worry is whether I should be trying harder with hair and makeup. You took the unusual step of highlighting the bits in your original letter you thought “salient” and I felt you were trying to lead my attention where you wanted it to go. I know you do a job (which you’ve asked me not to name) that means you help others, and I wondered if you’ve got really good at redirecting the attention away from you. What happened 10 years ago? Why are you writing now? While I don’t doubt for a moment that conventionally attractive people may have an easier life, it’s not the whole picture; they also have a certain amount of prejudice aimed at them. And I’m sure you know – I certainly do – people who aren’t conventionally attractive but whose personality is so magnetic that’s all anyone ends up seeing. And then there’s being attractive and being sexual. You didn’t make this distinction and I wondered if you equate being physically attractive with being sexually attractive. They aren’t necessarily the same thing.I contacted Prof Alessandra Lemma, a psychologist and psychoanalyst (bpc.org.uk) who highlighted this difference: “You can have someone who is stunningly beautiful and yet who is not at all [sexually] attractive because something about their sexuality is not fully integrated.” This could be for a variety of reasons too complicated to go into here, but might stem from the narrative around sex and sexuality they experienced growing up, or be the result of formative experiences. You mention feeling invisible and that this wasn’t a new thing. We felt this was really important. Lemma explained that “our experience of our bodies and ourselves is shaped very early on”. She wondered what happened to you growing up: “You may have internalised something that maybe you can’t even put into words [yet] about your body, about how you inhabit the space you’re in. We internalise people’s reactions and that has nothing to do with objective beauty, more to do with how we feel as a person and whether we feel we deserve attention. It’s the difference between looking attractive and feeling attractive.” Lemma suggested looking “more at the invisibility you talk of rather than how you look physically”. I agree. I think the talk of hair or makeup or looking stylish is a smokescreen to what is really going on here, which is where and why you learned to be quiet and invisible. This is something I think therapy can help with (you mentioned you might try it) because, as you say, friends aren’t really the people to explore this with It’s great you are focusing on a good life without a partner, but there’s no reason that this should be off the agenda for you. But first: you. You do have a voice; you’ve used it here and we’ve listened. I think you’ve started something really important.

The British Museum has announced plans to help "investigate the history of the Kingdom of Benin", with a grand archaeology mission and new museum. The organisation will work with Nigerian teams on the creation of a new Edo Museum of West African Art (EMOWAA) and accompanying archaeology project. The plan represents one of largest physical projects the British Museum has ever undertaken outside the UK.It comes after calls for it to return stolen artefacts to the ancient city.Historians say Benin City, formerly known as Edo, boasted earthen walls longer than the Great Wall of China.Broadcaster and author Stephen Fry last week shared a petition encouraging the museum to give back its Benin Bronzes; as well as returning the famous Elgin Marbles to the city of Athens. The British Museum, which has some 950 Benin Bronzes, has come under particular criticism for its refusal to give them back, but is only one of many museums struggling to justify the legitimacy of its collection. The newly-announced $4m (£3.04m) archaeological excavation will be the most extensive ever undertaken in Benin City. Hartwig Fischer, director of the British Museum said they were "honoured" to be working with colleagues from Edo State, the Benin Royal Palace, the Legacy Restoration Trust, the National Commission for Museums and Monuments of Nigeria, and Adjaye Associates on "this exciting project"."The British Museum's main mission is to work in partnership with colleagues from around the world to develop our shared understanding of cultural heritage," said Fischer."The archaeology project also provides the groundwork for the EMOWAA which will surely become one of the most significant museum initiatives in the coming decades," he added. What are the Benin Bronzes and why is this latest move significant? The Benin bronzes are a group of more than 1,000 heirlooms, metal plaques and sculptures, which decorated the royal palace of the Kingdom of Benin in what is now modern-day Nigeria. They were looted by the British army during an invasion in 1897 when British troops razed the royal city to the ground to avenge the killing of an earlier force.Archaeologist Dan Hicks, author of the just-published Brutish Museums, described the looting in the Daily Telegraph as "a chaotic free-for-all where officers and colonial administrators desecrated sacred ancestral altars for their personal gain".Pieces can now be found in museums in the UK, USA, Germany, Switzerland and The Netherlands. They are a key example of artefacts that the British took by military force and have not given back, despite requests from the Benin Royal Court.Benin prince calls for stolen sculpture's returnNigeria's opportunity for return of Benin BronzesMany of the bronzes, which carried religious significance to the Edo people, were taken from altars. Some of them are portrait representations of the dead Oba or king, who was treated as a god.The newly-announced partnership project will be viewed by many as a positive way for the British Museum to work with all interested parties to increase knowledge about the kingdom from which the Benin Bronzes were taken; and potentially create a situation which could lead to some or all of them being returned. The archaeology project commences in 2021 and will continue for five years, to look for further royal treasures, and to enable the construction of the museum. Adjaye Associates has been asked to come up with the design, and architect Sir David Adjaye said he was "humbled and deeply inspired". "From an initial glance at the preliminary design concept, one might believe this is a traditional museum but, really, what we are proposing is an undoing of the objectification that has happened in the West through full reconstruction," he said.Prof Abba Isa Tijani, director general of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Nigeria added that they hoped the prior archaeological work "will lead to a greater understanding of the ancient kingdom of Benin".

Ask any 10 automobile enthusiasts, and you’re likely to get 12 opinions. Yet for some reason, enthusiasts seem to be in complete agreement on the desire for one car: a brown, RWD, Diesel station wagon with a manual transmission. At least in the USA, this is a rare beast. I may be one of the few Americans who has ever owned one. As the Packard ads used to say, “Ask the man who owns one.” Well, I don’t anymore, but I used to, and here’s the story… In the late 1990s and early 2000s, I had a fairly successful side business of buying junk Volvos, mostly 240s, and parting them out for sale on eBay and some of online Volvo forums. At one point, I had listed on eBay a set of immaculate door cards from a 1980 244GL, in blueA fellow from the next town over contacted me, asking if I would be willing to deliver, if he won the auction. I was happy to, as I was not particularly excited about boxing up door cards. That’s how I met Bob. Bob was an anachronism. At the time, he was a 25-year certified ASE Master Mechanic, working at what must have been one of the last remaining Service Stations in America. Yes, they sold gas and had 3 service bays. You could drive across the hose that made the bell go “ding” inside, and an apprentice mechanic would run out, pump your gas, air up your tires, and wash your windshield! in 2002!Being that Bob had done every common auto-repair task hundreds, if not thousands, of times, Bob made a hobby of buying obscure vehicles and restoring them. This was his way of taking on new challenges.Bob had done a mechanical restoration of a 1985 Volvo 245DL Diesel. The body was pretty rotten though, so he had found a 1984 Volvo 245GL Diesel with a dead engine, and was in the midst of a re-body.He was using the blue interior from the donor car, but it had holes in the door cards for window cranks. The new body had power windows, and that’s why he needed my door cards. The new body was brown (of course!) Volvo never sold a brown over blue 240, so Bob’s creation was a one-of-a-kind. I found the color combination quite fetching.Bob and I became good friends, and still are. He’s now past 40 years on his ASE certifications, and he runs his own one-man shop. Fast-forward to 2006. I was driving another mythical beast, a 1992 Plymouth Voyager minivan with a five-speed manual. I was already planning my relocation from Michigan to Las Vegas and although the van was running decently enough, the air conditioning was totally inop, and I knew I would want A/C in the desert.I brought the van to Bob to assess the viability of a full rehab of the A/C system. His estimate was 150% of my purchase price of the van. I asked Bob if he had any better ideas.“Well,” said Bob, “The guy I sold my Diesel wagon to is looking to get rid of it. Last I saw it, the A/C still worked.” I called the guy and bought it immediately for $1000.I spent about another $500 for Bob to do some neglected maintenance and minor repair. Since the whole car was Bob’s work, I knew it was good. I trusted and respected Bob more than any other mechanic I have ever met.The gasoline-powered Volvo 240 was no speed demon, and the Diesel was worse. Even on a fresh rebuild, the 0-60 time could be measured on an hourglass. I was no stranger to slow cars, having previously owned a Mercedes 240D (stickshift, naturally), so I re-taught myself how to drive a slow car and had a blast driving my “new” wagon! Still, I was planning on driving this 22-year-old car on a cross-country relocation, so it needed a good shakedown. A couple of months after purchase, I took my wagon to a family function, round-trip from Michigan to DC.With the exception of a loose alternator belt, the trip went flawlessly. I discovered that the D24/M46 was happiest at 100 km/h, or 62 mph, so I kept to the right lane and let the cruise control do the work. At that speed, even on the rolling hills of that trip, I got 36mpg. It made me happy, and all it took was some patience.

In our series of letters from African journalists, Ismail Einashe writes that migrants are facing a tougher time since the outbreak of coronavirus.Thousands of African migrants are stuck in transit - unable to reach their destination or to get back home because the coronavirus pandemic has caused the world to come to a standstill. Take two key exit points: the Horn of Africa route via the Gulf of Aden into the Middle East and the central Mediterranean route from Libya to Europe. On the Horn of Africa route, the UN agency, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), has recorded a sharp fall in the numbers of migrant crossings. In April just 1,725 migrants arrived in Yemen from the Horn, compared to 7,223 in March, 9,624 in February and 11,101 in January of this year. Last year more than 138,000 people - an average of around 11,500 a month - crossed on boats to Yemen, the majority Ethiopians bound for Saudi Arabia in search of work.In the Somali port of Bosaso, migrants bound for the Middle East have been left stranded. In Djibouti, hundreds of migrants have been abandoned by traffickers in a country with one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in Africa.'Coronavirus has changed everything'The IOM estimates that about 400 migrants are currently been hosted by members of the local Ethiopian community in informal settlements around the city but the agency says they face increased stigma and abuse because travellers are seen as carriers of the virus.A 19-year-old migrant told IOM: "I have been here for around three months. The coronavirus has changed everything. I cannot continue. I cannot go back because all borders are closed."Meanwhile, across the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have deported nearly 3,000 Ethiopian migrants on cargo planes over suspicions that they have coronavirus. Most of them are domestic workers - including maids - who worked legally for low pay in the oil-rich Arab states. In Libya - the other key exit point, and the most dangerous sea crossing for migrants in the world - restrictions have prevented humanitarian boats from rescuing migrants stranded at sea - with migrants forced to return to a country mired in a dangerous conflict. There is likely to be a sharp rise in attempts to migrate to Europe once travel restrictions are lifted - not least because lockdowns in African states have worsened poverty and have caused more damage to already struggling economies. As for European states, they have used the Covid-19 pandemic to once again politicise the issue of migration.Malta has closed its ports and returned migrants at sea to Libya, while Italy said migrants would bequarantined on rescue boats.
