What’s too sweet, what’s too salty – and can chef and cookery writerFlorence Knight pick out the bestselling brand from our high streetselection Milk chocolateAsda ExtraSpecialPeruvianMilkChocolate100g, £1.50, asda.comMelts very easily. Smooth with quite caramelly notes. It’s thin. Quite nice; not too sweet. This is myfavourite.Tony’s Chocolonely Milk Chocolate180g, £3.98, tonyschocolonely.comVery chunky. It’s kind of biscuity – quite a crumbly texture. I think Iprefer something thinner. Brown-sugary notes. Nice flavour, I just don’t like the thickness.Pierre Marcolini Milk Chocolate Tablet63g, £7, eu.marcolini.comQuite different to the rest. Like it’s got more cocoa... there’s a carob-y taste. I like the size of it. Very different texture in your mouth, more like a crumbly fudge. I don’t love it. Waitrose 1 Milk Chocolate85g, £1.60, waitrose.comNot as flavoursome as the others; a bit more delicate. It seems like it has more dairy, it’s very creamy. Kind of blah 150g, £2, marksandspencer.comI like that the skin is on the nuts. It’s got a good crunch. There is definitely more of a nutty flavour to this bar. Creamy.Waitrose Belgian Milk Chocolate with Raisins & Almonds200g, £1.62, waitrose.comRaisin-heavy - there’s a lot of raisins and not so many nuts … I’m not so fond of this. 6. South Africans have been outraged by a spate of gruesome rapes and murders of women in recent weeks - including that of a schoolgirl who reportedly had her head staved in, and university student who was bludgeoned to death. The rapes and murders have led to street protests, the #AmINext campaign on Twitter, and an online petition signed by more than 500,000 to demand the reinstatement of the death penalty in a nation battling to curb high levels of crime.South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised a series of measures to tackle the crisis - including making public a register of offenders, increasing the number of "dedicated sexual offences courts", and harsher sentences.Photographer Sarah Midgley 37-year-old mother of two who lives in the main city Johannesburg, is still recovering from the trauma of being raped almost a decade ago.She told BBC Africa Women's Affairs reporter Esther Akello Ogola about her ordeal.I was raped by my ex-boyfriend in 2010, just around the time the football World Cup was taking place in South Africa. My ex-boyfriend had been physically and emotionally abusing me for close to 18 months before I got the courage to leave.I had threatened to leave many times before but every time I tried, he would get more violent. He would kick, sometimes choke and bite me. He constantly threatened to rape my daughters and kill them in front of me if I dared to leave him. He even tasered me. I did not share this with anyone because I was embarrassed and ashamed that I could not stand up for myself.I was also isolated from friends and family because coming right off a divorce, my self-esteem was not at its best and my ex-boyfriend convinced me that friends and family did notcare about me. I also believed he would hurt my babies. When I did get the courage to leave, I did so secretly. However, 10 days later, he was standing at my door.To say I was shocked that he had found me would be an understatement. He said he was only there to ask for a favour for the last time. He claimed to have no money or means to get to his uncle's farm, which was around 25km (15.5 miles) from where I lived. He promised that he would walk out of my life completely, if I gave him a ride. I believed him.For many years after the rape, I blamed myself for having believed that he would let me go scot-free.Cases that have caused outrage in South Africa since August:School pupil Janika Mallo, 14, is raped and dies after her head is apparently hit with a concrete block; no arrests have yet been madeFirst-year film and media studies student Uyinene Mrwetyana, 19, is allegedly lured into a post office's mail room and raped and bludgeoned to death; a post office employee has been chargedFirst-year theology student Jesse Hess, 19, is found dead in her bed and her tied-up grandfather Chris Lategan, 85, in the toilet; no arrests have yet been madeBoxer Leighandre "Baby Lee" Jengels, 25, is shot dead in a car by her ex-boyfriend, a police officer; he later dies of wounds sustained in a car crash as he tries to fleeShow-jumper Meghan Cremer, 30, is found dead in a shallow grave allegedly with a rope around her neck; three people have been charged with murderBody parts of sales coach Lynette Volschenk, 32, are allegedly found in refuse bags in an apartment block; a suspect has been arrestedSouth Africa murder and sex offences risingA little later on the car ride, I realised his body language was off. He seemed on edge and I justified it with the fact that he was a heroin addict. (Unfortunately, I found out this a bit late into the relationship).I told him I would reach only as far as the farm's gate and then head back home.If I thought things did not seem quite right before, his next actions confirmed my fears. He said I would leave when he said I could leave - and immediately locked the car doors.Once we reached the farm, he ran to my side, opened my door and dragged me by my hair and as I fell out of the car, he kicked me on the head and I passed out.

  10. ast month, Lisa Jenkins went for a walk alone around her local park for an hour, the first time she had done so unaided for 13 months. Jenkins was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three. Now 46, she struggles with vertigo and dizziness, as well as muscle spasms and poor mobility. An Access to Work grant means that she can get a taxi to and from her job in advertising, but for the last three months she hasn’t needed one. The difference? She believes, a few drops of grassy-tasting oil under the tongue each morning. “I have been using a 5% CBD oil for six months,” she says. “I previously took Duloxetine [an antidepressant medication also used to treat nerve pain] which was initially helpful, but my muscle-freezing episodes came back and I stopped taking it. I was also prescribed Valium, but you can’t take that during the working day.” A friend suggested she try the legal cannabis derivative. She has since been taking it every morning before work, using more during the day if her muscles become tight. “Within an hour of taking those first three drops, my muscles relax,” she says. “The stress in my head calms down. The longer I take it, the better things seem to be.” Jenkins is one of an estimated 1.3 million UK consumers who spend a total of £300m a year on cannabidiol (CBD) products. The oil contains one of the non-psychoactive chemicals found in the hemp plant – not the illegal mind-altering THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) that gets you high – and has been on the shelves of specialist health food shops and hemp “dispensaries” since 1998. It’s 21 years since the British government first issued a licence for a cannabis extract to be developed for use in clinical trials.Advertisement But in the last few years, it has leapt into the mainstream, acquiring the ubiquity of vitamin C and the social status of something much sexier. Most commonly consumed as an oil dropped under the tongue, CBD is also available as gummy sweets, capsules, body salves and e-liquids to vape. A CBD gold rush has led to an explosion of infused products, everything from soft drinks, tea and coffee to ice-cream, toothpaste and shampoo. You can get vaginal suppositories containing CBD (“weed tampons”) that are said to help with pelvic pain; CBD-infused deodorants and sexual lubricant (said to promote relaxation and increase blood flow); even CBD hummus, perhaps to snack on after your lubricated endeavours. For CBD evangelists, it seems there is no health problem it can’t help – from chronic pain, depression, anxiety and skin conditions to insomnia. Many report that CBD improves concentration, memory and general mood, as well as reducing stress levels. But the products can’t legally make such claims; in the UK, CBD can be sold and advertised only as a generic food supplement. “We never use any medical terminology,” says Johan Obel, director of po[CENSORED]r online CBD retailer the Drug Store, standing in front of a huge, gold-framed artwork of a nerve cell in its central London store. “If people come in asking for advice on a specific issue, we tell them to do their own research.” (He adds that their sexual lubricant is “by far one of our bestsellers”.)The boom in CBD-infused products on the high street is reminiscent of short-lived fads of recent years, such as our brief fixation with chia seeds, turmeric (rendering lattes highlighter-yellow) or spirulina. Only, CBD does not seem to be going anywhere. On a recent walk through London I visited a cafe serving camomile and CBD lattes, passed a yoga studio advertising CBD classes, and a bar serving CBD-infused cocktails. The CBD acronym, with its suggestion of something illicit, is catnip to anxious consumers in need of something they can’t quite put their finger on.Advertisement“Most years there is a golden product – a ‘Holy cow, can you believe how much of this we’re selling?’ thing”, says Al Overton, buying director at Planet Organic. “There was the year of quinoa, the year of manuka honey, the year of the goji berry. Now it’s CBD. We have been selling CBD products in our supplement section for just over two years, and it’s been our fastest-growing product in that time. The majority of interested customers are female – especially those who feel that conventional pharmaceuticals aren’t working for them.” He thinks it’s too soon to tell how much of a fixture “infused” foods and drinks will become. “We see oils and capsules as more of a sophisticated and long-lasting trend, but it is early days with the ‘edibles’. There is little evidence to support the claims CBD users make. So are we witnessing a global placebo effect I have been using CBD oil on and off for two years myself, finances permitting. It’s expensive: a bottle of 1,000mg (10%) CBD oil from Love Hemp, costing £49.99, lasts three weeks on average. I started because I wanted something to help with crippling period pain and associated symptoms, including anxiety. I love the taste; a bitter, herbaceous blast, like a joint.

  19. omorrow, 10 years after it launched, the cult Los Angeles label Reformation opens its first UK store. You may not know the brand’s name but you’ve probably seen its signature style, which has saturated Instagram for the past few years. Much copied, it is a sort of digital native take of boho: a floral dress with a high leg split, a deep square neckline, a button-down front or spaghetti straps. What makes Reformation the most 2019 of fashion brands, however, is its green credentials, claiming to operate as a “100% carbon, water and waste neutral company”. Its combination of sass and sustainability – “Being naked is the #1 most sustainable option. We’re #2” reads the brand’s Instagram bio – has won it an army of followers. “#RefBabes” include Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, Taylor Swift and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.Reformation dresses aren’t cheap compared with high street competitors – prices range from £80 to £435 – but they sell out quickly, on average within 38 days. Despite the higher prices, the brand describes itself as fast fashion – its website highlights the fact that “at Ref a sketch can become a dress in about a month” – whereas this process can often taken around 18 months for non-fast fashion labels Answering, and driving, consumer desire for newness while working hard to be sustainable is a very modern fashion contradiction – and a model most environmental campaigners would probably dismiss.Overall, the brand’s sustainability policies seem sincere and comprehensive. CEO Yael Aflalo has often talked about founding the company after being shocked to discover the pollution caused by clothing manufacturing on a trip to China. As a result, Reformation tracks the environmental impact of the clothes it produces, while 2–5% of the products are made out of vintage clothing, repurposed into new pieces. They also use deadstock and eco-friendly fabrics, and recycle, compost or donate textile scraps, with the goal of becoming entirely zero waste. The brand doesn’t use polyester, nylon, virgin polyester, virgin nylon and conventional cotton, due to their excessive carbon footprint.AdvertisementEven so, Reformation has on occasion failed to meet its own targets: when its 2018 Sustainability Report was published it was revealed that just 22% of the factory team were paid LA’s living wage. Meanwhile, just 26% of all fabric spend came with clean chemical certifications (the company’s goal was 75% for both). Despite these failings, the brand’s openness has been praised for being better than most. Even the carbon cost of the launch party for the brand’s British outpost has been carefully considered: among many initiatives, a tree will be planted for every guest in attendance The opening Notting Hill will be the first standalone store in the UK with the full Reformation range of products (following dedicated spaces at Selfridges and Browns East). Previously, British fans have been able to shop the collection online – where packaging is made from 100% recycled paper products and compostable bio-based materials – but faced high shipping charges on returns (not to mention the carbon footprint created by international shipping). Imperfect as it may be, Reformation has certainly disproved the longstanding fashion truism that sustainability cannot be sexy. Sexy sustainability is what it does best.

Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden and close rivals Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders have feuded over healthcare at the party's third debate. The debate in Houston, Texas, is the first time the three presidential hopefuls have been on stage together.Mr Biden attacked the feasibility of Mr Sanders' universal healthcare plan, Medicare for All, while Ms Warren and Mr Sanders defended the measure.Only the 10 highest-polling Democrats in the field of 20 are on stage. The keyissues for 2020 DemocratsAre votersbiasedagainstwomencandidates The eventual Democratic WhiteHousenominee will beannounced at the party convention next July, before the presidential election in NovemberGun control, immigration and tariffs were also debated - but heathcare saw the fieriest clashes. What is the healthcare debate The issue of how to reform the US healthcare system has become a point of disagreement between moderate and more progressive Democrats. The exchanges saw the two most left-leaning candidates, Mr Sanders and Ms Warren, face criticism from other candidates.Mr Biden criticised Mr Sanders' Medicare for All plan as being too expensive to work and said the country should focus on improving President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act instead. Can Bernie Sanders overhaul US healthcare Medicare for All would expand an existing federally run programme for the elderly to cover all Americans in a single-payer insurance system. The federal government would be the sole insurance provider, but it would not own or operate hospitals.Ms Warren defended the policy, saying families have to deal with exorbitant healthcare bills now, and only wealthier individuals and corporations would see increased costs from the plan. How about gun controlFormer congressman Beto O'Rourke, whose hometown El Paso wasthe site of a mass shooting that left 20 dead, was asked whether he supports confiscating assault-style rifles."Hell yes we're going to take your AR-15, your AK 47," Mr O'Rourke said to applause. "We're not going to allow it to be used against your fellow Americans anymore On gun control Senator Kamala Harris drew President Trump into the debate, saying: "Obviously he didn't pull the trigger, but he's certainly been tweeting out the ammunition."In the opening remarks most of the candidates attacked President Trump, blasting him for being a divisive leader and accusing him of racism.Businessman Andrew Yang used his opening speech to announce he would be using donations to his campaign to start a "freedom dividend", giving $1,000 (£810) a month to 10 American families, prompting laughter from other candidates.
