Alas, poor WordPad, we knew it well, but did anyone use it, and will anyone miss it? WordPad, the stalwart middle-ground text editing app that has been a Windows staple for 28 years, has been deprecated by Microsoft. In a bulletin about deprecated features, published Friday, Microsoft says that WordPad will no longer receive updates and will be unavailable in future versions of Windows. WordPad has been an optional Windows feature for some time. It became an option, rather than a standard feature, in February 2022. Therefore, its deprecation isn't a great surprise now, in 2023. Many older readers will have poked text around in WordPad since it has been around since the Windows 95 days. Microsoft initially envisaged WordPad as a primary free word processor for Windows users. The lighter-weight Notepad was the bundled tool of choice for plain text and configuration file editing. For short documents with styled text, multiple fonts, picture inserts, and a sprinkling of other basic features, WordPad could handle it. However, Microsoft limited the WordPad app's crafting of .doc and .rtf files just enough to inspire users to upgrade to its paid-for Office Word software. In its WordPad deprecation notice, Microsoft clarifies that there isn't room for a middle-ground app like WordPad anymore. "We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like .doc and .rtf and Windows Notepad for plain text documents like .txt," states the official notice dated September 1. There are many Notepad and Word alternatives from third-party software creators, so you shouldn't feel limited by Microsoft's advice. However, most apps target either plain text or fully-featured word processing, and the middle ground covered by WordPad is comparatively neglected. When Microsoft announced it would deprecate Windows Paint with an OS update in mid-2017, it quickly became aware of a groundswell of po[CENSORED]r support for the app. That lead to a change of heart by Microsoft, and it decided to give the bitmap app a lifeline by adding it to the Microsoft Store and even modernizing it. Somehow, we can't the public getting behind WordPad in the same way.

Samsung is likely to launch the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE soon. The phone was recently spotted on Bluetooth SIG, hinting at its imminent launch, and now its expected launch timeline has also been tipped by a reliable tipster. The smartphone is said to launch later this year. Previously, the successor to Galaxy S21 FE was tipped to launch next month, however, the latest report denies the same and gives a new insight. Additionally, the phone's expected specifications and features have also been leaked on the internet. According to the details shared by Tipster Max Jambor (Twitter @@MaxJmb) on X (formerly known as Twitter), the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE will be launched this year in the fourth quarter and not at IFA (Internationale Funk Ausstellung) 2024 in Berlin, which kicks off on September 1. Along with the smartphone, the South Korean tech giant is also said to introduce Galaxy Tab S9 FE and other FE products as well as IoT products in Q4 2023. However, the exact launch date of the devices is yet to be announced by Samsung. Previously, the Galaxy S23 FE was tipped to launch in September. The latest update, however, doesn't confirm the same. In addition to this, the expected features and specifications of the purported smartphone have also been tipped. The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE is said to come with a 6.4-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. It is likely to be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 chipset. Furthermore, the Galaxy S23 FE has also been tipped to pack a triple rear camera setup which may include a 50-megapixel primary camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS), an 8-megapixel secondary camera, and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera. For selfies, the phone could house a 10-megapixel front-facing camera. The handset is said to run on Android 13 out-of-the-box and get four years of OS updates and five years of security patches. Other leaked details are a 4,500mAh battery with 25W wired charging support as well as wireless charging support and dust and water resistance. Notably, Samsung did not launch the rumoured Galaxy S22 FE and hence Galaxy S23 FE will succeed 2022's Galaxy S21 FE.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently took to Instagram to preview a potential virtual keyboard feature for Quest headsets. Posted on his official account, the short clip shows Zuckerberg and Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth typing away on a VR keyboard while wearing a Quest 2 headset. The device was able to accurately track their finger movements and display what they were writing on screen without requiring any extra peripherals. According to Zuckerberg, he was able to achieve 100 wpm (words per minute) while Bosworth hit 120 wpm. To put that into perspective, the average typing speed of an adult is 40 wpm so it does perform well. If development bears fruit, it could solve a longstanding problem with virtual reality. Typing in VR is a slow process. You’re forced to enter inputs one at a time since floating VR keyboards can't match the speed of a physical device. Sure, you can purchase one of the best physical keyboards out there to get the speed that you want. But then you’re forcing yourself to carry around an extra peripheral alongside the VR headset just to get the user experience you want. Things can get cumbersome. A work in progress There is still work to be done over at Meta’s Reality Labs research unit where this tech was developed. News site UploadVR points out in their report the headset requires “fiducial markers” to work properly. Fiducial markers are those black and white squares you see in the Instagram video. They assist the hardware in calibrating itself so it knows where to place the virtual keyboard. The end goal here would be to one day not need those squares for help so the VR helmet can project the keeb on any flat-enough surface. Personally, we worry about typing feel. This technology already exists with laser keyboards that can project the keys onto a flat surface. The problem with these projections is typing feels terrible because you’re just mashing your fingers into a table, and we fear Meta’s feature will essentially be the same thing. This may be fine for the occasional email, but we can’t imagine using a VR keyboard for an entire day’s work. VR peripherals It's important to mention Meta is holding a two-day Connect virtual event from September 27 to 28. It's been confirmed the Quest 3 headset will make its debut at Connect, and perhaps a beta test for the VR keyboard will be announced then. An official launch date seems unlikely. As stated earlier, there's still work to be done. We’re also curious to know if the company will finally show off its wristband device at the event. If you’re not aware, Meta has been working on a wristband gadget that can read the electrical signals in a person’s arm to register inputs. The latest trailer for this gadget shows it can be used for simple gestures like twitching your finger to control a video game avatar. However, back in 2021, an earlier prototype displayed the ability to function as a virtual keyboard by using the same electrical signals. It’s unknown at this time if Meta scrapped the wristband feature in favor of the headset keyboard or if it’s still in the works. Be sure to check out TechRadar’s list of the best wireless keyboards if you’re looking for a keeb to pair up with your Quest headset.

Nvidia may have withdrawn from Russia back in Oct. 2022, but its cloud-based game streaming service GeForce Now continued to operate through a partner company — GFN.ru — or it will, until Oct. 1, 2023, according to a recent announcement. The service will stop accepting new registrations on Sept. 1, 2023, and will shutdown entirely by Oct. 1. According to the announcement, the decision comes amid concerns that the team is unable to meet their preferred standards of quality in current conditions. But some — specifically, Overclockers.ru — believe the political climate and current sanctions against Russia are what's fueling the shutdown. If you’re not familiar, GeForce Now is Nvidia's game streaming service, which offers games for users to play in a cloud-based environment. You can also link existing libraries to the service from other platforms such as Steam, Epic Games, and (later this year) Microsoft Game Pass. GFN.ru made its debut in the Russian market back in Oct. 2019, and also currently operates in Belarus, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. Without delving into too much detail, the blog post states that the team is unable to offer the service quality they would like to given “current circumstances”. As such, the GFN.ru division will no longer allow new users to register starting Sept. 1, 2023. They will also stop selling 30-, 180-, and 365-day subscriptions at this point. The shutdown will continue until Oct. 1, at which point the GFN.ru servers will shut down. Any member who has a subscription active beyond this date will automatically receive a refund. The team asks that users to allow up to two weeks for the refund before contacting support. The official blog post doesn’t give a clear reason for the move to shut down operations in Russia, but Overclockers.ru has speculated the reason is a combination of both political sanctions and the lack of po[CENSORED]rity for cloud gaming services. Nvidia stopped selling products in Russia in March 2022, and closed its Russian offices in Oct. 2022. If you’d like to read more about the GeForce Now closure in Russia, you can check out the official blog post detailing the announcement.

Musician Name:Mariah Carey Birthday / Location: March 27, 1969 (age 54) Huntington, New York Main instrument: Hip hop · pop · R&B · soul Musician Picture: Musician Awards & Nominations:- Best Performance: - Other Information: Mariah Carey (Huntington, March 27, 1969) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer and actress. Renowned for her five-octave vocal range, melismatic singing style, and unique use of the whistle register, she is referred to as "Supreme Bird" and "Queen of Christmas". Throughout her career, Carey has been considered one of the greatest and most influential vocalists in the history of recorded music. She is credited with having influenced the vocal construction of many artists from different musical genres and as one of the first artists to po[CENSORED]rize hip hop and the practice of remixing in po[CENSORED]r music. Under the guidance of her ex-husband, executive Tommy Mottola, Carey rose to fame in the early 1990s after signing with Sony Music and releasing her eponymous debut album, which topped the Billboard 200 for eleven consecutive weeks. The work made her the only artist in history to have her first five working songs reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, from “Vision of Love” to “Emotions”. The artist's po[CENSORED]rity continued to grow with her subsequent albums Emotions (1991), Music Box (1993) and Merry Christmas (1994), the latter being the most purchased Christmas album of all time. In addition to producing several other number one hits, including "Dreamlover", "Hero", "Without You" and "All I Want for Christmas Is You". With Daydream (1995), Carey made history when the second single, "One Sweet Day", a duet with Boyz II Men, scored sixteen consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, a record held for 23 years. After parting ways with Mottola, she adopted a new image and incorporated more hip hop elements into her works, which was evident with the release of Butterfly (1997) and Rainbow (1999). After eleven consecutive years of US number one singles, she left Sony in 2000 and signed a $100 million recording contract with Virgin Records. However, after having a highly publicized physical and emotional breakdown, as well as the critical and commercial failure of her film Glitter (2001) and its corresponding soundtrack, Virgin released her contract for 50 million and she signed with Island the following year. . After a relatively unsuccessful period, her subsequent albums The Emancipation of Mimi (2005) and E=MC² (2008) brought her back to the top of the charts and featured the songs "We Belong Together", "Don't Forget About Us" and "Touch My Body" at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. However, since Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (2009), she has returned to experience relative success with her releases. His work has earned him three Book of Records entries, five Grammy Awards, 21 American Music Awards, 21 World Music Awards, and numerous others, in addition to the titles of "Industry Icon" and "Artist of the 1990s" and 19 singles in No. 1 in the United States — more than any other female artist of the Billboard Hot 100 era. Carey became the first artist to debut three songs at the top of that chart, the most of any musician. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), she is the woman who has received the most certificates in the United States, based on her 68.5 million units accounted for. Worldwide it has distributed 200 million recordings, which makes it a record holder in sales. The VH1 channel placed her in second place on the list of the 100 greatest women in music, while the music magazine Rolling Stone recognized her as one of the 100 greatest vocalists of all time. In 2019, Billboard magazine named her the fifth best-performing musician of all time on its charts.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro colour options have been visualised in renders ahead of their expected debut next month as the successors to last year's iPhone 14 series of smartphones. While Apple is yet to share any details regarding these handsets, a publication has shared renders of the iPhone that were based on leaked information. This year, Apple is tipped to drop two existing colourways in favour of new options for the purported iPhone 15 Pro models that are said to feature a titanium chassis. Detailed renders created by 9to5Mac's Ian Zelbo, show the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus in Black, Blue, Green, Pink, and Yellow colour options. According to the publication, the renders were generated based on "detailed colour codes" provided by a source. The renders show the rear panel of the smartphone with light pastel colours. The camera module is located at the top left corner, with a familiar diagonal layout for the dual camera setup. Meanwhile, the renders created for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max show the handsets in Blue, Silver, Space Black, and Titan Gray. All four colour options show the upcoming handsets sport a triple rear camera setup that looks quite similar to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. While these leaked renders do not include these details, the upcoming iPhone 15 lineup is tipped to feature USB Type-C ports unlike previously models that support Apple's proprietary Lightning connector. Reports have hinted at the inclusion of Thunderbolt/ USB 4 support and faster charging speeds — up to 35W on the iPhone 15 series. Similarly, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are said to use an Action button instead of the company's iconic mute switch. This button is said to be programmable and recent reports and leaked case images suggest that it can be customised to perform certain functions on the smartphone in addition to toggling silent/ring modes. While these hardware changes aren't visible on the renders — they are expected to be unveiled by the company at its next launch event that could reportedly take place on September 12.

Key Windows 11 features may soon be customizable as Microsoft further integrates its Windows Copilot AI assistant into the operating system. This tidbit comes from tech news site Windows Latest, which claims to have discovered new .json (JavaScript Object Notation) files within recent preview builds of Windows 11. These files apparently hint at future upgrades for the desktop AI assistant. For example, a “TaskManagerService-ai-plugin.json” was found which is supposedly a “plugin for Task Manager integration”. If this ever comes out, it could give users the ability to “monitor or close running apps using” Copilot. In total, six are currently tested and they affect various aspects of Windows 11. Next, there is an “AccessbilityTools-ai-plugin.json” that gives Copilot a way to “control accessibility [tools]. This would make it "easier for those with [a] disability to navigate through the system.” Third is “ai-plugin-WindowsSettings.json” for controlling important Windows 11 settings. Which ones exactly are not stated within the report. Fourth is “ClockService-ai-plugin.json” to help people manage their computer’s alarm settings. Rounding out the pack are “LaunchApplication-ai-plugin.json and SmartFileActions-ai-plugin.json” for opening apps through AI commands. Modular control hub Windows Copilot was in limited release when it first came out back in late June 2023, and it was pretty barebones. Since then, Microsoft has been repeatedly upgrading the AI function to be more comprehensive. Earlier reports state Copilot may be able search for specific files as well as offer “store suggestions”, presumably for apps to download at the Microsoft Store. You may read all this and think that the AI assistant may become a bloated mess, but on the contrary, it might not. Due to the fact all the .json files mentioned are plugins, Windows Copilot will most likely be a modular tool, meaning you can pick and choose particular Windows 11 features it can control. This effectively turns the AI into your personal control hub for the OS. Upgraded AI assistants Of course, that’s assuming the final version will release exactly as we just described. Nothing in the news story has been officially confirmed by Microsoft. Be aware there’s a chance, if small, that the company could terminate certain plugins at any time. So far, the updates have been first-party only. Windows Latest claims the tech giant could begin offering third-party plugin support within the coming weeks. Partnered third-party companies or developers remain unknown at the time of this writing. Generative AI models have opened a lot of possibilities for personal assistants. Gone are the days of asking simple questions to Siri or Cortana. Technological improvements have made it possible for AIs to help in our day-to-day tasks. Google, for example, is working on an AI writing tool for upcoming Chromebooks. To learn more, we recommend checking out TechRadar’s list of the best AI chatbots for 2023 to see what the technology is capable of.

T-Platforms, the parent company of Russian chipmaker Baikal Electronics, has declared bankruptcy and is auctioning off its assets, including intellectual property related to Baikal processors, one of a few designers of CPUs and system-on-chips from Russia, reports CNews. According to Kommersant, the total value of these assets is estimated at $5 million. T-Platforms, a Russian company with ambitions to build exascale supercomputers and develop domestic CPUs, was officially declared bankrupt in October 2022. T-Platforms had been among the few Russian companies capable of producing supercomputers that could compete on a global scale. T-Platform's bankruptcy proceedings have led to the auctioning of various assets, including the intellectual property, patents, and shares of Baikal Electronics. The IP is related to the development of Baikal processors, which rely on the Arm and MIPS instruction set architectures. The technology being auctioned is outdated, to say the least. The Baikal-M1 processor, for instance, is based on eight outdated Arm Cortex-A57 cores operating at 1.50 GHz and outfitted with an 8MB L3 cache that is accompanied by an eight-cluster Arm Mali-T628 GPU with two display pipelines. TSMC made the SoC on its 28nm fabrication process. Meanwhile, Baikal's 48-core Baikal-S SoC for servers has never entered mass production. Since both processors are now obsolete, Baikal's assets have been valued at 484 million rubles ($5 million). The auction is scheduled for September 26, 2023. The current owners of Baikal Electronics have no plans to reclaim the patents or developments. This is perhaps because Baikal used to develop CPUs and SoCs that were subsequently produced by TSMC, and the latter can no longer work with Russian companies due to export curbs imposed by the Taiwanese government following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in late February 2022. The future of Baikal Electronics remains uncertain. The company has not announced new processors for several years, and production was halted in February 2022 due to sanctions. Despite the outdated technology and market skepticism, the auction is proceeding, and it remains to be seen who will acquire these assets and for what purpose.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra specifications have leaked online, months ahead of the expected debut of the company's top-of-the-line flagship smartphone for 2024. The successor to the Galaxy S23 Ultra that was unveiled this year could feature a display with flat edges, according to an image leaked on the microblogging website X (formerly Twitter). The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is said to feature Qualcomm's yet-to-be-announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC that is also expected to power most flagship smartphones from a range of manufacturers next year. Tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) posted an image of the purported Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra on Monday that shows the front portion of the handset. Unlike its predecessor, this handset appears to sport a display without curved edges. The bezels on the display appear similar to this year's model. The leaked image also shows a centre-aligned hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera located at the top of the display. The display specifications of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra were also leaked by Ice Universe, who has a good track record of sharing details of Samsung products well before they are announced. According to the tipster, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will sport a 6.78-inch display with a resolution of 1,440x3,120 pixels, a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, and up to 2,500 nits of peak brightness. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra was previously tipped to measure 162.3x79x8.6mm. The handset is also said to be powered by Samsung's Exynos 2400 chipset or Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC in different markets. The handset is expected to run on Google's upcoming Android 14 operating system, with the company's One UI 6 interface. Previous reports also suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will feature a powerful 50-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. The company's existing flagship, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, is equipped with a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. If the leaked details are accurate, this could mean Samsung's upcoming flagship phone could offer better images captured when zooming in on a subject. However, it is worth taking these leaked details with a pinch of salt as the South Korean tech conglomerate is yet to announce plans to launch the purported handset.

Windows 11 has a change in testing which will please anyone who is fed up with Edge popping up when opening certain links in the OS, despite it not being the default browser – but there’s a catch, sadly. You’re surely familiar with the scenario where you open a link via a Windows system component – meaning in a Windows 11 menu somewhere, maybe a help link for example – and it fires up Edge, rather than your chosen favorite web browser. There’s no way to modify that preference either, but in preview build 23531 which was released at the end of last week in the Dev testing channel, Microsoft has changed it so these system components use your default browser, as they should. As the blog post for build 23531 makes clear: “In the European Economic Area (EEA), Windows system components use the default browser to open links.” And in that sentence, you can spot the catch: for now this is just in European countries (specifically the EEA), so it’s not happening in the US or elsewhere. Analysis: Come on Microsoft, push this out globally Hopefully this feature will witness a wider regional rollout in time – it’s a small tweak to make, and one that’ll definitely lower the annoyance factor when using Windows 11. Okay, so it isn’t that often that you click one of these system links, but when Edge pops up unannounced, it can be quite annoying. Especially as it inevitably also throws some kind of banner into the mix upon being opened for the first time in a while (“hey, don’t forget about me, make me your default browser, go on, you know you want to,” and so forth). Is there a reason Microsoft may have been forced to do this in Europe, pertaining to regulations or compliance issues? We’re not sure, but the chatter on the rumor mill seems convinced enough this is something Microsoft is only doing to head off the danger of being penalized by the EU in some way. It does seem strange that the change is Europe-only, after all. That said, if the feedback is positive enough, maybe the software giant will listen, and roll out this change more widely anyway, even if this somehow a forced move in Europe.
