According to a new report published by International Data Corporation (IDC), the AI server market is surging in China. Based on IDC’s latest market data, the size of the accelerated computing market in China grew an impressive 54% from H1 2022 to H1 2023. Moreover, the corporation forecasts that the market, valued at US$3.1 billion, will grow to US$16.4 billion by 2027. Before we ponder the forecasts, it is worth looking at the state of the China AI market more closely today. IDC says that GPU servers still dominate the market in 2023, accounting for 92% of servers deployed. The remaining 8% of servers are said to be accelerated by processors such as NPU, ASIC, and FPGAs. IDC also focuses on who is creating these AI servers for the Chinese market. It observes that Inspur, H3C, and Ningchang are the top three suppliers, accounting for more than 70% of the market. Regarding what kinds of businesses are using AI, IDC asserts that the most significant users of AI are still internet services. Servers dedicated to AI internet service enhancements make up about half of the market, with the remaining demand coming from the financial, telecommunications, and government sectors. With the whole market on the up, it isn’t surprising to hear that all these sectors want more AI and have doubled their AI server use over the most recently surveyed period. IDC provided some reasoning behind the growth in AI server adoption. It notes that AI is moving from narrow specific tasks like image and speech recognition to more comprehensive, human-like intelligence tasks like generating content and steering decisions. In the future, it sees newer, larger AI models providing better solutions in areas such as the metaverse, urban governance, medical health, scientific research, and more. IDC reckons Chinese companies seeing AI's most significant benefits so far are set to drive investment in this technology over the next three years. It forecasts that “China’s accelerated server market will reach US$16.4 billion by 2027.” Interestingly, it sees non-GPU servers grabbing a larger share of the AI server market over that time, but not by very much, rising from 8% to 12% by 2027. Whether this change will be spurred by demand/supply and geopolitics or by improved AI accelerating ASICs isn’t made clear. Last, IDC notes that China’s local AI chip makers are rapidly growing, with government support accelerating progress. The latest figures show that half a million locally sourced/developed accelerator chips were used in AI servers in China in H1 2023. That quantity addressed 10% of the entire server market in the country.

Samsung Galaxy S24 series — comprising the purported Samsung Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra — could feature a new material instead of aluminium, a tipster has claimed on X (formerly known as Twitter). Apple recently unveiled the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, its flagship smartphones for 2023, that adopted titanium edges instead of the stainless steel frame found on their predecessors. While Samsung is yet to reveal plans to launch the Galaxy S24 series, the inclusion of titanium could drive up the price of the upcoming handsets. According to tipster Revegnus (X: @Tech_Reve), Samsung is looking to manufacture titanium frames for the standard Galaxy S24 model on its domestic production line in Vietnam. For the Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra models, the South Korean tech conglomerate is said to rely on two unnamed partner companies for titanium frames. While Revegnus has had a fairly good track record of leaking smartphone specifications, tipster Ice Universe (X: @UniverseIce) responded to the tipster and claimed that only the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra would be equipped with a titanium frame. Last month, Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, its flagship smartphones for 2023 with a new 3nm A17 Pro chip, an Action button that replaces the mute switch, and a titanium frame. In order to keep both prices and thermal levels in check, the company has used a combination of titanium on the external frame and aluminium for the internal structure. Recently, another tipster leaked computer-aided design (CAD) renders of the purported Galaxy S24 Ultra. The leaked images suggest that the handset will bear a similar resemblance to its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 Ultra. It is shown to feature a quad rear camera setup and support for Samsung's S Pen. According to previous reports, Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra is said to feature a 6.8-inch AMOLED display. The phone is said to run on Qualcomm's yet-to-be-announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip in most markets, while the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ are tipped to debut with the company's Exynos 2400 SoC in some regions, and support charging at up to up to 45W.

We appear to have got our clearest indication yet that a whole new version of Windows will be coming next year. Windows Latest reports that at a recent technology conference, Intel’s chief financial officer, David Zinsner, confirmed that the next iteration of Windows is indeed due to land in 2024. Zinsner commented: “We actually think 2024 is going to be a pretty good year for client, in particular, because of the Windows refresh.” Clearly, then, Intel has been informed that there’s going to be a new version of Windows next year. Although there’s no mention of the name Windows 12, or any other name for that matter – ‘Windows refresh’ is obviously not the title Microsoft will plump for when it comes to the successor to Windows 11. Analysis: Playing the name game Of course, there are already plenty of rumors around Microsoft bringing out a next-gen Windows in 2024. And there’s plenty of speculation that it will be called Windows 12, too, but the reality is that at this point, Microsoft may be deep into working on this next version, but probably doesn’t know what it’ll be called itself yet. Windows 12 just seems the most likely default option, naturally. About the only other possibility that occurs to us is that Microsoft may want to jam Copilot into the name, or maybe ‘AI’ or something along those lines, given that this is the latest big thing (TM). And Copilot will certainly be considerably developed in a year’s time. You may recall that Intel was previously the source of a leak about next-gen Windows, one that actually used the name Windows 12 when talking about support regarding upcoming processors. This info was quickly retracted when reported on, though, and we wouldn’t read anything into the use of the name, as we just mentioned. Next-gen Windows, whether it’s Windows 12, Windows AI – or insert your own guess here – is expected to arrive later in the second half of 2024 (work theoretically began on the new OS at the start of 2022). We’re expecting it to be built around big advances with Copilot which will doubtless be used to push it as a compelling upgrade. Microsoft will be looking for a sizeable carrot to dangle in front of would-be upgraders, especially considering that Windows 11 has failed pretty miserably to gain all that much traction in its two years of existence thus far.

Asus has quietly launched a new high-performance storage adaptor. Twitter/X storage sleuth momomo_us spotted that the Asus Hyper M.2 x16 Gen5 Card product pages have appeared. This is a significant update to the Hyper M.2 x16 Gen 4 card with up to double the potential bandwidth, thus supporting up to 512 Gbps if your platform is up to it. The product description says that the Asus Hyper M.2 x16 Gen5 Card allows the fitting of up to four NVMe M.2 SSDs. Users can mix and match storage devices. Official Asus specs indicate users will be combining PCIe 5.0/4.0 M.2 drives, and M.2 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 devices can all be fitted in any of the four slots with Q-Latch mechanism for easy installation and removal. With the newest and fastest drives, there may be some concern over power and cooling. However, Asus has fitted an auxiliary 6-pin PCIe power connector to this card and asserts that the onboard two-phase power solution delivers up to 14W to each drive, which is more than sufficient. With the shroud of the card, you can see the four M.2 slots and a cooling fan. This works like a blower-style graphics card fan, taking in cool air from the fan end of the card and pushing it over the M.2 card slots to exhaust out of the highly perforated fixing bracket. Asus indicates that this is enough, combined with top and bottom M.2 thermal pads, to “reduce temperature-induced throttling during heavy, sustained data transfers.” The fan can benefit from extensive control parameters from the Asus Fan Xpert 4 software. You can also turn the fan on or off via the small button on the card’s rear I/O area. As for performance, the headlining 512 Gbps bandwidth comes from four fast PCIe 5.0 M.2 NVMe drives working in RAID 0 mode – in a striped aggregation. The chart above shows the impressive performance uplifts possible with this new PCIe storage card – up to 128 Gbps per slot. Look Before You Leap There are several things to consider before purchasing one of these Asus Hyper M.2 x16 Gen5 (or Gen4) Cards. Asus published a FAQ outlining the capabilities of currently supported AMD and Intel motherboards about M.2 drives hosted on add-in cards. It highlights in the FAQ that the “maximum M.2 SSDs support will vary depending on different CPUs.” Your motherboard must support PCIe bifurcation. The FAQ compatibility table also shows, for example, that systems using Intel Core family CPUs and the latest motherboards and graphics cards can only use two of the four M.2 storage slots at once (as a max 16 CPU PCIe 5.0 lanes are available) and benefit from the full potential of the hosted drives. In contrast, AMD Ryzen users with the latest platforms can use all four slots (max 28 CPU PCIe 5.0 lanes). Asus also recommends all users update to the latest motherboard BIOS. Asus has confirmed that the Asus Hyper M.2 x16 Gen5 Card will cost $79.99, and channel availability is scheduled for seven to 14 days.

iPhone 14 price in India is set to drop during the upcoming Flipkart Big Billion Days sale. As part of the upcoming sale event that is scheduled to begin on October 8, the flagship smartphone that was announced last year could be available below the Rs. 50,000 price point, the e-commerce platform has confirmed via a teaser on its website. The iPhone 14 series of smartphones was the last to feature Apple's proprietary Lightning connector and is powered by the company's A15 Bionic chip. iPhone 14 price in India during Big Billion Days sale As per a teaser posted on a landing page for the upcoming Big Billion Days sale on Flipkart, the iPhone 14 price in India could drop below the Rs. 50,000 mark. The image shows the handset with the text "4?,???" and asks customers to guess the price of the handset during the sale. This suggests the price of the iPhone 14 will drop to Rs. 49,999 or lower when the Big Billion Days sale begins, a price that is likely to include bank discounts and other offers. The image also links to a new landing page that lists the price of the handset at Rs. 60,999, down from the existing price of Rs. 69,900. The page also contains a disclaimer that states these prices will be available for a limited time during the sale and that Flipkart is not connected with the promotion. Instead, brands or sellers will sponsor these offers on the iPhone 14, according to the e-commerce platform. iPhone 14 specifications Launched last year at Apple's 'Far Out' event, the iPhone 14 sports a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with up to 1,200 nits of peak brightness. It has an aerospace-grade aluminium frame with flat edges, and the glass is protected with Apple's proprietary Ceramic Shield material on the front. Apple's proprietary A15 Bionic chip powers the iPhone 14 — this is the same chip that powered the iPhone 13 Pro models from 2021. The firm does not disclose the amounts of RAM and the battery capacities of each model, but teardowns after the phone's debut revealed that the phone has 6GB of RAM and a 3,279mAh battery. The iPhone 14 is equipped with a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera with a 1.9um sensor and an f/1.7 aperture. It also features a 12-megapixel sensor paired with f/2.4 aperture ultra-wide-angle lens with 120-degree field-of-view. On the front, the phone has a 12-megapixel front TrueDepth camera with f/1.9 aperture lens and an array of sensors that enables Face ID for biometric unlocking.

Windows 11 is still struggling to attract folks to upgrade, going by the latest stats on the desktop OS market from a major analyst firm. TechSpot noticed the new figures for last month from StatCounter, one of the main outfits that keeps tabs on Windows versions and their relative levels of adoption. So, on the cusp of two years after its release (technically, it was released two years ago, but the adoption figures are for September 2023), Windows 11 now holds a 23.6% market share. For almost two years of existence, that’s not a very impressive inroad carved into the desktop OS world. What makes it worse is that the needle has barely moved for Windows 11 since April 2023, when it was at 23.1%. In other words, over the past five months, Windows 11 has managed to gain 0.5%, which is a pretty poor show. Half a percent in almost half a year… Windows 10 still holds a 71.6% share of the desktop market, with Windows 7 having dwindled away to 3.3% of diehards at this point. Analysis: Why might people be avoiding Windows 11? If we draw a comparison to what Windows 10 managed to reach in just under two years of its life, that was 36.6%, a good deal more than Windows 11 has achieved now. Indeed, at the two-and-a-half-year point, Windows 10 overtook Windows 7 – and clearly Windows 11 taking the desktop OS top spot isn’t going to happen in six months’ time. Why is Windows 11 struggling so much compared to its predecessor? There are a few likely reasons, but a primary one is that it makes life more difficult in terms of upgrading. New system requirements for Windows 11, most notably TPM (security) and ruling out older generations of processors, have left many folks with somewhat older PCs unable to upgrade even if they wanted to. At least not without modifying or upgrading hardware, which many PC owners aren’t keen on doing, frankly, especially not to get access to an operating system which isn’t all that different to Windows 10 at its heart. That’s another major issue here. Yes, Windows 11 does make a good number of changes, but under the hood, deep down, it remains much the same OS as Windows 10 in many ways. So, there isn’t as much of a drive to upgrade in that respect. Except maybe for gamers, who do get some interesting goodies with Windows 11 – and there’ll be more important stuff to come, certainly when DirectStorage gets wider support on the PC gaming scene – and that’s reflected in the current Steam stats for Windows 11. Those show Windows 11 securing a 37.4% market share with gamers on Steam, which is a good deal higher than StatCounter observes with everyday PC users. Coincidentally, that level is about where Windows 11 should be for non-gaming users, if it had managed the same pace of adoption as Windows 10. Other reasons folks may give Windows 11 a swerve include adverts sneaking into the OS more, privacy issues bound up in that, and some odd design decisions with the interface (like removing the ‘never combine’ taskbar option, though that choice has now been corrected). A steady stream of bug reports popping up and weirdly persistent problems like sluggish SSDs probably don’t help, either. At any rate, it looks like Windows 11 adoption is going to continue to be a sluggish affair for Microsoft, and perhaps the only factor that’ll really speed it up is when the end of support starts to come into view for Windows 10. (That support deadline is October 2025, incidentally, so still two years away).

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has voiced concerns over Huawei's latest advancement in chip manufacturingwhich enabled the company to build a fairly high-performance HiSilicon Kirin 9000S system-on-chip for smartphones. The development underscores the challenge the U.S. faces in monitoring and regulating wafer fab equipment exports, and Raimondo believes more resources and mechanisms are essential for stricter enforcement, reports Bloomberg. Raimondo's apprehensions stem from reports surrounding Huawei's usage of its Kirin 9000S SoC that was made by SMIC using its 2nd generation 7nm-class fabrication process and supplied to the tech giants in violation of U.S. sanctions. In response, she highlighted the urgent need for enhanced mechanisms and increased resources to reinforce the department's ability to oversee export-controls. Raimondo has said that different tools and additional enforcement resources are needed. The Commerce Secretary also alluded to a pending bill that would grant her department more control over tech deals perceived as security threats. Additionally, she acknowledged Senator Maria Cantwell's suggestion for a new structure to address potential tech supply chain risks. Further emphasizing the department's stringent stance, Raimondo mentioned a precedent-setting $300 million penalty imposed on Seagate for trading with Huawei without the requisite permissions. Such stringent measures, she believes, are a testament to the department's commitment, but she also stressed the necessity for additional resources to bolster these efforts. Raimondo's statements come in the wake of her diplomatic trip to China in August, aimed at smoothening the strained ties between the two nations. However, the launch of Huawei's Mate 60 Pro smartphone based on the Kirin 9000S SoC during her visit has ignited discussions in the U.S. capital. These debates question efficiency of American initiatives to decelerate China's technological prowess.. While the Commerce Secretary previously stated that she did not found proof of China's capability to produce these advanced chips in large quantities, she is under substantial political scrutiny. Many, particularly Republicans, urge her to act swiftly in imposing tighter regulations. Meanwhile, the tools that SMIC used to make the SoC were not banned and/or has been installed for a while. Meanwhile, the U.S. cannot physically prevent SMIC from supplying chips to Huawei. What it can do is put SMIC into the blacklist and essentially destroy this company. But the U.S. government is not inclined to do it now. The U.S. administration is endeavoring to improve relations with China, anticipating a potential summit between President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in November.
