Tested: 1997 Honda Prelude SH Gains Sleeker Style, Sharper Moves Honda's Prelude has suffered from a touch of split-personality disorder these past few years. Despite its undisputed appeal—particularly the VTEC-engined model—the Prelude has had to endure styling better suited to the twenty-something crowd combined with a price more appropriate to boomers with trust funds. Add the recent sales trend of moving away from coupes to sport-utility vehicles and minivans, and you can see that the prognosis has not been great—even for a car good enough to garner three 10Best awards in a row. Last year, Honda sold 12,517 Preludes, down from 15,467 the year before. Compare those figures with sales of 36,040 Preludes in 1992 and annual volumes of more than double that from 1985 through 1987, and a precipitous sales slide is evident. There isn't much Honda can do to dissuade customers from crossing over to other types of vehicles, but the company knows how to make an improved car. So for 1997, the new coupe will be available as two models—the Prelude and the Prelude SH—and both will be powered by the top-drawer 2.2-liter VTEC engine, which now musters another five horsepower (thanks to a new exhaust header and revised valve timing) to peak at 195 horsepower at 7000 rpm. The more pedestrian engine variants available on '96 Preludes didn't make the cut. In tailoring the look of the car to fit a more upscale buyer, this new Prelude has styling that evokes the very successful third-generation Prelude (which old 52,541 units in '88), but with distinctly modern touches. Among them, unusual double-decker headlights with compound reflectors, and flat-planed body panels that remind you a little of Nissan's 240SX at first sight. Soon afterward, though, the car assumes its own identity and presents a crisp, well-proportioned if slightly conservative aspect to the outside world. Inside is a new instrument panel as tidy and functional as in any other Honda. The instruments are grouped ahead of the driver, and the rest of the panel is sleek and straightforward. It's a welcome replacement for the controversial wide strip of instruments found in the previous model. The overall mood inside is rather dark and somber except in green cars, which get a two-tone black-over-ivory upholstery treatment. Interior room has been improved so that the rear seats—unlike those of the previous model—are genuinely usable by adults for short trips. We discovered this when our six-foot-two photographer occupied the rear seat for some down-the-road shot and then declined the opportunity to return to the front seat for the rest of the trip. The base car will be priced at about $23,000 (in the same ballpark as the former mid-level Si model), which isn't bad considering the now-standard VTEC power and good equipment levels. In fact, the base car has just about everything the SH model has. What differentiates the $26,000 SH model is a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob, racierlooking alloy wheels (of the same 16-inch size), and a handling package that includes firmer springs, dampers, and anti-roll bars as well as a stability-enhancement yaw control system known as the Active Torque Transfer System (ATTS).

The Five Things We Cannot Change Let's cut right to the chase: the five givens that we all have to deal with in this world are: 1. Everything changes and ends. 2. Things do not always go according to plan. 3. Life is not fair. 4. Pain is part of life. 5. People are not loving and loyal all the time. But our active and aggressive egos are terrified by these facts of life and will do anything to get around them. Tapping into his 30 years as a therapist, pastoral counselor, and self-help author (How to Be an Adult in Relationships), David Richo urges us to see that these givens must be embraced gratefully and used to draw out the best in us. For example, although everything changes and ends, renewal and resurrection are always surprising us with new possibilities. Instead of letting pain defeat us, we can use it to develop courage and compassion for the suffering of others. Richo hits the mark with his commentary on the ego's continual campaigns to control others. He suggests a relentless spiritual campaign against this behavior using the five A's — acceptance, attention, appreciation, affection and allowing. He describes a spiritual practice for use in any predicament: Hold both hands out, cupped, palms upward, and imagine them holding two opposites. Feel the light and equal weight of both, since your hands are empty. Then say, for example, "I can serenely hold both my need for relationship and my not having one right now." We also loved Richo's characterization of the imperial ego's encrustations as FACE — Fear, Anger, Control, Entitlement. No wonder he defines enlightenment as "lightening ourselves of the heavy wardrobe of ego." These ideas and spiritual practices are gateways to contentment.

Explosion in Nashville that damaged dozens of buildings is believed to be an intentional act (CNN) — A Christmas morning explosion that rocked downtown Nashville, injuring at least three people and damaging dozens of buildings, is believed to be an intentional act, authorities said. According to police, officers with the Metro Nashville Police Department were responding to a call of shots fired around 5:30 a.m. CT Friday when they came upon an RV parked in front of an AT&T transmission building at 166 2nd Avenue North. The RV was playing a recorded message that indicated a bomb would explode in 15 minutes, Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake said during a news conference Friday. Officers saw no immediate evidence of shots fired but they requested the department's hazardous devices unit and started to evacuate neighborhood residents, police said. The bomb squad was responding when the RV exploded at 6:30 a.m. CT, police spokesman Don Aaron said. "We do believe this to have been an intentional act," he said. "Significant damage has been done to the infrastructure there on 2nd Avenue North." Three people were transported to hospitals from the scene, but none were in critical condition, according to Nashville Fire spokesman Joseph Pleasant. The force of the explosion knocked down one officer, Aaron said, and caused hearing loss in another -- hopefully temporarily, he said. But no officers were significantly injured. The FBI told CNN that its field office in Memphis is taking over the investigation. There were no known credible threats in the Nashville area that would have signaled an impending attack on or before Christmas, a federal law enforcement source told CNN. A second law enforcement source said federal authorities are not aware of any increased chatter nationally by known extremist groups that would indicate any credible plans for conducting attacks around the holidays. Acting US Attorney General Jeff Rosen was briefed on the incident early this morning, according to his spokesman, "and directed that all DOJ resources be made available to assist in the investigation." The White House said that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident as well and would receive "regular updates." Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said in a statement on Twitter that the state would "supply all the resources needed" to determine the cause of the explosion. 'Everything on the street was on fire' Eyewitness Buck McCoy told CNN the explosion took place right in front of his home, causing his windows to be blown in. "Everything on the street was on fire," he said. "There were three cars that were fully engulfed." McCoy said he was originally woken up by what he believed were gunshots about 10 minutes prior to the explosion. He got up and looked out the window, he said, but went back to bed when he didn't see anything. Asked if the noise he heard could have been something other than gunfire, McCoy emphasized that he believed it was, saying he owns a gun and goes shooting, so he's familiar with the sound of gunshots.

Among Us Reportedly Has Biggest Month Ever For Active Users In A Game A new report on digital games pegs the indie hit as one of the most po[CENSORED]r games ever. Among Us has been 2020's biggest surprise hit, taking Twitch by storm and even getting some play time from US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Now, according to a report released by Nielsen's SuperData, it could be considered one of the most po[CENSORED]r games ever in terms of active players. The report shows that Among Us clocked over half a billion active users just in the month of November, which SuperData says makes it the most po[CENSORED]r game ever by this metric. Despite these huge numbers, however, Among Us doesn't even crack the top ten games of the month by earnings, due to its low level of monetization. "The PC version (which has a $5 upfront price) accounted for the majority of revenue from August to November (64%)," the report adds. "Despite having an extremely small share of the total player base (3% in November)." Among Us' po[CENSORED]rity in November was likely helped by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's record-breaking Twitch stream of the game in late October, which was then followed by a second stream at the end of November. The social deception game has found widespread po[CENSORED]rity among game streamers at all levels of fame in 2020, even leading to the cancellation of a planned sequel so the team could focus on the first game. Among Us was solely available on PC and mobile for most of 2020, and only recently released on the Nintendo Switch. The game will be coming to Xbox consoles next year, but there's no news yet on a potential PlayStation release.

The best Android apps right now: ready for 2021 The best Android apps for your phone, both free and paid-for The best Android apps are hard to find - if you've just got an Android phone, or want to find a way to reinvogorate an old one, a new app will do the job, but sorting through the thousands out there can be hard. That's where we come in - our experts have been combing the Google Store for years to find the very best Android apps, testing them hard to find out which are truly useful and add that little bit of extra zing to life. We don't just stick to the po[CENSORED]r categories either - we look at Android camera apps, photo editors, health and fitness titles for Android phones and things to just keep your phone safer and more secure than ever. And if you want to personalize your phone too - we've got you covered, with Android apps that canmassively help you change the way your smartphone looks from its original state. These app lists are constantly updated with a mixture of free and paid titles - and all are chosen by our experts so you know that there won't be any hidden surprises and a worthwhile purchase if you're actually spending real money. These are the world's very best Android phones Best new Android app This is the latest Android app we've chosen to feature, refreshed every few weeks. Our choices are usually new apps or apps that have recently received a major update, but occasionally hidden gems and other essentials will also be highlighted. Glitch Lab Glitch Lab is a photo editor packed full of digital glitch effects. You’ve probably seen apps like this before, and the style of effects offered won’t appeal to everyone, but if you like making your pictures look a bit glitchy or retro, this is one of the most capable and versatile ways to do it. There are over 100 effects in this Android app, and many of them are customizable, ensuring that your glitches won’t look like anyone else’s. As if to demonstrate the power, it’s even possible to generate an image from scratch, building it up through a number of effects and tweaks. There’s plenty here even for free, but to get the absolute most out of Glitch Lab you’ll need to grab the Pro IAP for $6.49/£5.99. This, at the time of writing, adds 42 extra effects, 37 new parameters for the free effects, increases the output quality, and more. DoodleLens DoodleLens is perhaps a bit of a gimmick, but it’s a fun one. Simply doodle something, then point your phone’s camera at the doodle from within the app, and you can copy it and paste it on top of the world around you in augmented reality. You can also change the color of the doodle and even make very basic animations by copying multiple doodles and having the app cycle through them. You can then record and save the results. DoodleLens probably isn’t an Android app you’ll use often, and we found it a bit hit and miss at recognizing our doodles, but when it works it raises a smile, which is all you can really ask for at $1.99/£1.89. Pixtica Pixtica is one of many tools hoping to replace your phone’s default camera app. Camera apps vary a lot, and their success largely depends on your phone make and model, but Pixtica is a decent option if you’re looking for something new. It’s packed full of features, including numerous filters, a GIF recorder, panorama, hyperlapse, manual controls, and oddities such as a ‘Planet’ mode, which warps images into a sphere-like shape using Pixtica’s “advanced stereographic projection algorithm”. There are all sorts of other modes too, whether you’re taking photos or shooting video, and the app is laid out intuitively. However, while many of the functions are free, you have to pay to unlock higher resolutions and to remove watermarks when using filters. The payment gets you other things too, but those are the main things that make the purchase close to essential if you plan to use Pixtica. And that would be fine, except the app opts for a subscription fee (of $1.25/£1.25 for one month with discounts for six months or a year) rather than being available as a one-off purchase. We’re not fans of paying a subscription for a camera app, but if any such app is worth it, it’s Pixtica.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Review: Durable, but Major First-Gen Vibes The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, the first folding-screen PC, is built solid with a gorgeous OLED display, but it's very expensive and has some bugs. For every innovation to happen, someone has to go first. The worry is how they stick the landing, as that often has implications for the perception of new technology for months or years. Lenovo is the first to market with a foldable Windows 10 PC. The ThinkPad X1 Fold ($2,499.00 to start, $3,099.00 as tested) is a tablet. Or maybe a laptop? Maybe a book? That price is eye-popping, which is often the case for first-generation technology. Lenovo has built this with an eye on durability, and added in some premium leather. It's powered by Intel's low-power Core i5 Lakefield processor, which enables the form factor. But Windows 10 wasn't made for foldables. Lenovo has done some nice work with its own software to soften that blow, but there's still a bit to be done to make foldables like this take their place among the best Ultrabooks. Your first impression of the ThinkPad X1 Fold may be disbelief. The device ships flat, like a tablet. Then you can just fold it closed. Like a book. Open, close. Open, close. Yup, this laptop… tablet -- whatever you want to call it -- can fold. This isn't the first foldable device in the world, of course. Samsung, Huawei, and Lenovo's own phone arm, Motorola have all released folding phones, which have been of varying (often disappointing) quality. But this? No, this feels solid. When it's closed, the ThinkPad X1 Fold looks like a fat notebook - but a premium one, like a Moleskine. It's bound in black leather with the ThinkPad X1 logo stamped in the front. On the back, there's a kickstand that folds out. There is a bit of a space between the screens, though if you use the optional physical keyboard (more on that below) then no space shows at all. You open the device the same way you would open a book, and that's when the 13.3-inch foldable touchscreen amazes, revealing itself without showing the crease. There is, however, a significant bezel hiding some of the components. While you can't see the crease while the display is on (it's visible when off), you may feel it. All you need to use the screen is a light touch. But if you press a bit harder, you can feel some of the pieces under the OLED panel. But I opened and closed this plenty, and I really didn't have any doubts about durability, as long as you don't toss it around.

The Toyota GR Yaris Lives Up to the Legendary Celica GT-Four The Toyota GR Yaris had a lot to live up to. Though not as famous as counterparts from Subaru, Mitsubishi, Lancia, and Ford, the Toyota Celica GT-Four was still a great rally homologation special. Built over three generations, the Celica GT-Four was the basis for a formidable World Rally Championship machine. With the second-generation ST185 GT-Four, Toyota took three driver's titles and two manufacturer's titles. But the third-generation GT-Four, the ST205, is arguably the most famous. This was the car with which Toyota deployed an ingenious cheat to skirt turbocharger restrictions in 1995 and gain extra horsepower. It also got Toyota banned from the WRC, with the team not returning until 1997. But let's put cheating aside for a bit. The roadgoing Celica GT-Four ST205 was arguably the cream of the crop, and the new GR Yaris had to be able to stand proud next to it. Fortunately, the new Yaris does. English TV show Fifth Gear got the two together on track, and while host Jason Plato enjoys driving the ST205, the GR Yaris is much quicker and much sharper. That's not really a surprise, given how automotive technology has moved on in the last 25 years, and the fact that the Yaris is lighter and more powerful. Still, the ST205 is very appealing, and unlike the GR Yaris, you can buy one in the U.S. now. Believe me, it's tempting.

How to Make Your Voice Deeper You’ve watched movie trailers, TV shows, and YouTube videos. You’ve listened to radio ads and podcasts. And you’ve come to realize that deep voices, in general, sound much better. But how can you make your voice deeper? If Mother Nature had a box of requests, voice deepening would be among the most po[CENSORED]r petitions. Voice actors, professionals who use their vocal cords to make money, and even everyday people constantly look for ways to lower the pitch of their voice. We get it. Numerous studies suggest that talking with a deeper voice comes with a bunch of benefits or even success. But is this feasible? Step #1. Listen to Yourself The very first thing you want to do is see what you have to work with, since, if you don’t pay attention to your voice, you won’t be able to know what you need to fix to make it perfect. Start talking and record your voice with your phone’s audio recording app. Listen to your voice carefully. Chances are your voice will be completely different from what you thought because you’re now experiencing it as an external listener. Don’t freak out, it happens to everybody, and the truth is that recorders don’t lie. Embrace the fact that this is exactly how you sound and start taking notes. Listen carefully as words are coming out of your mouth, study your pitch, and keep your recording in a safe place so you can compare it later after you’ve completed your exercises. Step #2: Fix Your Posture Now, stand in front of a mirror and watch yourself as you’re talking. This might be an article on how to change your voice while shooting a video or make your voice deeper, but what you need to understand is that you basically want to control it. And to ensure absolute control of your voice, you need to mind your posture, and the best way to do so is to align your spine and stand straight. This will remove any extra pressure on your muscles around your larynx, and it will allow you to control your breath fully. Study your current posture to see what you’re doing wrong. Stand tall, keep your chin up, and read a passage from a book. Practice your vowels as you’re changing your spine positioning to see how it affects your voice’s pitch. After a while, you will have found the perfect spine position that will help you talk with a deeper voice. To fix your body posture, though, you need to make it a habit. Keep your spine straight when you’re working on a computer, sitting in a meeting, walking, and running. Step #3: Relax Those Muscles Our muscles are drowning in tension: stress, bad body posture, wrong working out exercises. Every single thing we do by using our bodies has a direct effect on our muscles and usually adds a lot of tension. To make your voice deeper, you need to release it from four key areas Tongue: Start with the organ that plays an ultra-essential part in controlling your voice, but we all forget to keep an eye on. The human tongue consists of eight different muscles, but it needs only a straightforward exercise to relax. Stick the tip of your tongue behind your bottom front teeth. Leave it there for ten seconds and repeat for a couple of times. This will relax the whole area and release unwanted tension from your mouth. Jaw: Next, to get more control of the way you speak and deepen your voice, you need to relax your jaw. Start by massaging your masseter muscles (they lie right in front of your ears) for a minute or two. This will relax your whole face, essentially. Then, find a bone called pisiform right next to your masseter muscles and massage them in a circular motion while keeping your mouth open. Throat: Have you ever noticed when you’re yawning, your throat is at its most relaxed state? Also, ironically, in that state, if you try to talk, your voice will sound deeper, fuller, and lower-pitched. So, yawn. And as you’re yawning, drop each ear towards your shoulder, forward, and back. Feel a small stretch at the back of your throat, relax your jaw, and when you feel your throat relaxing and gently stretching, you’re good to go. Neck: Humans are not perfectly designed and the human neck is one of these flaws on our bodies. Pillows, desk work, long hours in front of a computer, weightlifting, and abs workout are just a few factors that put a lot of tension in the neck muscles. So, stretch it. Roll it over to one side, then to the other side, then bring it back to the center, drop it forward, and breathe. Feel the tension releasing, and even though it might feel like a face yoga exercise, it’s the perfect way to start your deep voice training.

Three French police officers shot dead after responding to a domestic violence incident French gendarmes stand guard in a street in Saint-Just, central France on December 23, 2020, after three gendarmes were killed and a fourth wounded by a gunman they confronted in response to a domestic violence call. Paris (CNN)A man suspected of killing three police officers in central France has been found dead, the country's Interior Minister has said. Three gendarmes were shot dead and a fourth injured after they responded to a domestic violence incident in Puy-de-Dôme, west of Lyon, in the early hours of Wednesday. The alleged shooter left the scene, sparking a manhunt. On Wednesday morning, Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin tweeted that "the madman was found dead." Earlier Wednesday, the minister released a statement expressing "deep sadness" in a statement following the deaths of Lieutenant Cyril Morel, Warrant Officer Rémi Dupuis, and Brigadier Arno Mavel, of the Puy-de-Dôme Departmental Gendarmerie, who were killed during an intervention for domestic violence. CNN affiliate BFM TV reported the police officers were fatally shot by a 48-year-old man as they tried to rescue a woman who had taken refuge on the roof of a house. The house was set alight but the woman was rescued, BFM reported. Further details surrounding the death of the suspect have not yet been released. "Called upon to intervene to help a woman who had been beaten by her husband, the gendarmes (officers), in circumstances that have yet to be clarified, were shot at by the man and returned fire," the interior minister's statement said. The statement said Mavel, 21, was seriously wounded and succumbed to his injuries. The two other officers carrying out a reconnaissance towards the house were in turn caught in gunfire. Morel, 45, and Dupuis, 37, were fatally wounded. A fourth officer who was wounded in the thigh is being taken care of by the emergency services; his life is not in danger. On Twitter, French Prime Minister Jean Castex wrote that "this tragedy affects us all and grieves the whole country."
