  1. With All-in-ones upgrading hardware has always been a pain, shuttle aims to change that with its new somewhat low spec’d XPC P20U. With the ability to take up as little room as possible while still providing a solid experience. Shuttle Announces New Fanless 11.6 inch AIO PC Shuttles X50 fanless 15.6″ models have been used for years for this purpose though with the size considered a bit too bulky for some application. Shuttle’s range of models is now being expanded to include another fanless, but considerably smaller, 11.6″ (29.5 cm) version. Wherever larger all-in-one PCs are out of place, the XPC all-in-one P20U is right at home. Its external dimensions are just 29.9 x 27.1 x 5.0 cm (D x W x H). If tidied cable routing can be dispensed with, the height can be reduced by an additional 6.8 cm by removing the cable collector box on the bottom of the unit which is new with this model. The display, which is just under 30 cm (11.6″) diagonally, is large enough for common touchscreen applications and the size of many “thin and light” mobile 2 in 1 devices. HDMI and VGA connections are also available to connect a second (and even a third) display for individual content. Gesture-based operation using several fingers (e.g. pinch to zoom) is possible thanks to multi-touch support. The entire front of the unit is protected from dust and splashes of water according to protection class IP54, which also makes it easy to clean. Its hardware features make it particularly flexible for uses like point-of-sale applications, control tasks as well as office applications. The P20U relies on the efficient but still underpowered for real productivity tasks 1.8 GHz Intel Celeron 3865U processor with its two cores and HD Graphics 610 . Two SO-DIMM slots for a total of up to 32 GB of DDR4 RAM are available although I would argue any task that would use that much RAM would be need a much beefier CPU and GPU. An internal USB type A connection, together with the openings for external antennas, provide for a 4G module with especially strong reception, for example. . Doing away with fans at all, this model is completely silent, requires little maintenance and is suitable for continuous operation. The P20U comes with a stand which is individually adjustable to the desired angle. The stand is removable and doing so reveals a standard VESA mounting surface which enables the device to be mounted to walls or other suitable surfaces. The compact case has room for a 2.5″ drive (HDD/SSD) and an NVMe SSD in the M.2 format. A webcam, microphone and speaker, as well as WLAN, Bluetooth and Gigabit Ethernet, are already built in. Peripherals can be connected using the six USB ports and two RS-232 interfaces. Pricing And Availability The Recommended Pricing for Shuttles XPC Barebone P20U is 309.00 (ex VAT). and should be available now.
  2. New research out of the University of Waterloo has found a novel method to extend the battery life of smartphones for up to an hour each day. The researchers have developed an app which smartphone users can use to reduce the energy consumption of their devices without any significant impact on performance. "The built-in multi-window feature released with the new Android operating system allows users to have multiple windows and files open at the same time similar to a laptop, but this results in unnecessary energy drain," said Kshirasagar Naik, co-author of the study and a professor in Waterloo's faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering. "We have developed an app which users can install on their devices and use to reduce the brightness of non-critical applications. So, when you're interacting with one application, the brightness of the other window goes down thereby reduces the energy consumption of the device." The app was evaluated in an experiment involving 200 smartphone users, who downloaded the software on their devices and used it while they had multiple windows opened. It was found that when the energy saving technique was used it extended their battery life by 10 to 25 per cent. "What happens now is that you put the phone on a charger for the night and when you leave home the next day the battery is at 100 per cent, but there is a lot of behind the scenes computation and communication going on, and it drains the battery," said Naik. "By midday charge is reduced to 30 per cent. So, you need to charge the battery many times in a day, and from the user's perspective that is a big pain. "Due to the excess energy consumption, the phone becomes warmer and warmer while the frequent charging reduces the life of the battery. So, batteries that are meant to last for three years may have to be replaced in two years." The study, MultiDroid: An Energy Optimization Technique for Multi-Window Operations on OLED Smartphones, co-authored by Milind Kumar Rohit, Chiranjeev Kumar and Ginny all of the Indian Institute of Technology and Naik was recently published in IEEE Access, an open access journal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

  7. Pope Francis has condemned the "atrocities" of child sex abuse and clerical cover-ups in a letter to the world's 1.2bn Roman Catholics. The letter to "the People of God" calls for an end to the "culture of death" in the Church, addresses failures to deal with abuse and asks for forgiveness. Last week a grand jury report detailed seven decades of abuse in Pennsylvania. The landmark investigation found more than 1,000 identifiable minors had been abused by 300 priests in the US state. Thousands more are thought to have fallen victim. The inquiry found evidence of systematic cover-ups by the Church, with many cases now too old for prosecution. After the report was made public, the Vatican said the Pope was on the side of victims against "predator" priests. What did the Pope say? The Vatican says it is the first time a Pope has addressed a letter to the entire Catholic po[CENSORED]tion on the topic of sex abuse. In Monday's 2,000-word letter he addresses the US scandal directly and acknowledges the Church's role in failing to act sooner. He describes the "heart-wrenching pain of these victims" that were "long ignored, kept quiet or silenced". "With shame and repentance, we acknowledge as an ecclesial community that we were not where we should have been, that we did not act in a timely manner, realizing the magnitude and the gravity of the damage done to so many lives," he writes. "We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them." The Pope's message quotes a passage from the Bible in Corinthians that says "if one member suffers, all suffer together" and calls for the Church to come to grips with the reality of what has happened in a "comprehensive and communal way". "If, in the past, the response was one of omission, today we want solidarity, in the deepest and most challenging sense, to become our way of forging present and future history. "It is essential that we, as a Church, be able to acknowledge and condemn, with sorrow and shame, the atrocities perpetrated by consecrated persons, clerics, and all those entrusted with the mission of watching over and caring for those most vulnerable. Let us beg forgiveness for our own sins and the sins of others." What are the latest cases? The letter's release comes days before the Pope is due to travel to Ireland to address the Church's World Meeting of Families. The head of Ireland's Roman Catholic Church, Archbishop Eamon Martin, has said he expects Pope Francis to meet victims of clerical sex abuse during his visit to Dublin. Child sexual abuse scandals continue to embroil the Church around the globe. Last month the former archbishop of Washington DC, Theodore McCarrick, stepped down over abuse accusations against him. US church officials described as credible allegations that he sexually assaulted a teenager nearly 50 years ago. He says he has no recollection of this. In May, Archbishop Philip Wilson became the most senior Catholic in the world to be charged with concealing child sexual abuse in Australia in the 1970s. What has the reaction been? Margaret McGuckin from Survivors & Victims of Institutional Abuse, a historic abuse charity based in Northern Ireland, said the Pope's response was "too little too late" and said "nothing will change" with the letter. Anne Barrett-Doyle, co-director of clerical abuse tracking website BishopAccountability.org, said there needed to be "more actions, less words" from Pope Francis. "He needs an effective discipline process for bishops and religious superiors who are known to have enabled abuse," she said. Irish campaigner Marie Collins, who was abused by a priest as a teenager, welcomed the condemnation of Church cover-ups, but said more concrete action on accountability was needed.

  10. Google has dipped its toes into the consumer hardware business in the last few years. While it started off rocky — ahem, Google Glass — the tech giant quickly redeemed itself with its line of smartphones, Pixelbooks, and Google Home products. This year, when Google launches a Pixel 3 smartphone, it may re-enter the wearables market with its first smartwatch, the Pixel Watch. Here’s everything you need to know. Better apps Google just announced a revamp of policy surrounding the Wear OS apps that run on devices like the Pixel Watch, aimed at improving the overall quality of them — a clear suggestion the company is looking at the wearable ecosystem as it prepares for some sort of launch. The policy, unveiled on August 15, calls for mandatory review of apps by Google rather than allowing app makers to voluntarily submit to the process (you know, if they feel up to it). Google also now insists that developers include at least one screenshot of the app in action. The new policy is meant to address two common issues Google says it has seen in Wear OS apps: Weak support for different shapes and a lack of screenshots detailing an app’s appearance. Some of the best wear OS watches are weird shapes, after all. Here’s how Google puts it: Support for different screen types: Wear OS by Google is available in both round and square screens, and some round devices also have a chin. Developers are advised to test on all screen types. If a physical device is unavailable, they are asked to use the Wear OS by Google emulator. Wear OS by Google app screenshot: To pass the review, the app needs to have at least one Wear OS app screenshot. To keep prerelease Wear apps private, the Google Play Store will not show the Wear screenshots unless the Wear App is in production or open testing. The policy will become mandatory as of October 1, 2018, Google said — might this be the date the Pixel Watch launches? Specs Since we’re still several months away from a possible Pixel Watch announcement, details on the rumored smartwatch are sparse. But we do expect the Pixel Watch to ship with flagship-quality hardware. Much like similar premium smartwatches, we anticipate both Wi-Fi and LTE versions of the Pixel Watch; German website WinFuture reports that the Pixel Watch is currently being developed as three different models, code-named “Ling,” “Triton,” and “Sardine.” If true, this also means it’s possible the Pixel Watch will come with size variants as well. That same report also goes on to state that the Pixel Watch will come with at least 1GB of RAM, though it’s uncertain whether that would apply to every model. It’s highly likely the Pixel Watch will pack in the hottest new wearables chip set that should ship later this year, the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100. The new processor will reportedly be smaller, more efficient, and perform better than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 2100. Perhaps the biggest benefit of the rumored Pixel Watch is its operating system. The Pixel Watch will most likely run a stock version of Wear OS, or a version with special features just for the Pixel Watch — similar to Google’s brand of Android for the Pixel phones. Since the smartwatch will be Google’s own hardware, it should receive frequent software updates and support for at least a few years. Features While rumors of the Pixel Watch’s features aren’t widespread yet, expect Google Assistant, Google Assistant, and a touch of Google Assistant. Google has leaned heavily into Assistant in the last year, improving it heavily and packing it into more products. It would be fair to assume that Google’s voice assistant will be a big part of the Pixel Watch’s intended use. Release and availability It may be a bit of a wait until we actually see the Pixel Watch. Since Google will almost certainly wait on Qualcomm to release its newest chipset for wearables before it announces Pixel Watch, it’s likely we won’t see the watch until late in the year. Right now, we believe the Pixel Watch will be announced alongside this year’s crop of new Pixel smartphones. While a specific release date isn’t mentioned, industry analysts Canalys took the possibility of a Pixel Watch into consideration in its wearables report for the second quarter of 2018, highlighting such a watch as being serious competition for the Apple Watch. Last year, Google announced the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL in late October, so we’re anticipating a similar announcement date for this year. In terms of availability, it’s likely Google will sell the Pixel Watch both on its own website, as well as in major retail outlets. If Google does make an LTE version of the Pixel Watch, it maybe a carrier exclusive throughout the holiday season.
