  1. A US-UK trade deal "will absolutely be possible", Donald Trump has said, after he told The Sun Theresa May's Brexit plan could kill an agreement. Speaking after talks at Chequers, Mr Trump said the US-UK relationship is "the highest level of special", while Mrs May said they had discussed plans for an "ambitious" trade agreement. Mr Trump and his wife, Melania, later had tea with the Queen at Windsor. Thousands of people have protested in London against Mr Trump's UK visit. A large balloon, portraying the president as a baby, has been floated in Parliament Square as part of the demonstrations. Other protests are taking place across the UK on Friday and Saturday. The Queen greeted Mr Trump and the first lady as their motorcade arrived at Windsor Castle. The band of the Coldstream Guards played the Star-Spangled Banner and she invited the president to inspect the guard of honour. Their meeting lasted nearly an hour and was the final engagement in Mr Trump's two-day working visit to the UK. The Trumps later took off from Windsor in a presidential helicopter on their way to Scotland for a weekend stay at his Turnberry golf resort. Mr Trump and Mrs May's talks at Chequers took place after the Sun published its wide-ranging interview with the president in which he was critical of the PM's Brexit plan. But standing alongside Mrs May after the meeting at her Buckinghamshire country residence, Mr Trump praised her as an "incredible woman" and a "very tough negotiator" who was "doing a fantastic job", and said there could be a "great" trade deal between the US and UK. Jon Sopel: The Wacky Races of press conferences Trump: I didn't criticise May to The Sun Corbyn: It's not Trump's business who's PM Queen and US presidents through history He said: "I read reports where that won't be possible, but I believe after speaking with the prime minister's people and representatives and trade experts it will absolutely be possible". Mr Trump's first visit official visit to the UK as president took place in between the Nato summit in Brussels and a meeting on Monday in Helsinki with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Thousands of protesters, mainly women, have flooded the streets of central London in the first of the day's demonstrations against against Donald Trump. The crowd is full of whistles, drums and the all important pots and pans that seem to have become a symbol of this movement. Whilst the mood is jovial, their motivation is serious. Most of those I've talked to are here because of Mr Trump's immigration policies, especially after recent pictures from the Mexican border. There are also countless signs on his attitude to women. At the news conference, Mr Trump said: "The relationship between our two nations is indispensable to the cause of liberty, justice, and peace." He also told reporters: He had apologised to Mrs May for the Sun's story - but she told him not to worry as "it's only the press" He had not given Mrs May advice on how to deal with the EU but "did give her a suggestion... and I think she found it maybe too brutal" Brexit was an "incredible opportunity" and "whatever" the UK did after it left the EU was "OK with me" Mr Trump described Brexit as a "very tough situation... between the borders and the entries into the countries and all of the things", saying: "The only thing I ask is that she work it out so that we can have very even trade." Mrs May said the US was "keen" to do a deal with the UK, adding: "We will do a trade deal with them and with others around the rest of the world." She maintained the government's Brexit agreement - which has come under fire from supporters of a "hard Brexit" - "delivers" on the referendum vote. Earlier, Mr Trump said he and Mrs May had spoken for an hour-and-a-half at the black-tie dinner at Blenheim Palace on Thursday, which he attended with his wife Melania. "I think we probably never developed a better relationship than last night," he said. Mr Trump arrived at Chequers by helicopter after visiting the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, Berkshire. Meanwhile, Mrs Trump played bowls with the PM's husband, Philip May, at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London, where she met Chelsea Pensioners and local children and was shown how to make remembrance poppies. Downing Street said Mrs May had presented the US president with a gift of an illustrated ancestral chart of his Scottish heritage through his mother, and his wife with a bespoke perfume called the First Lady in a custom bottle. In his Sun interview, Mr Trump also said former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson - who disagrees with the PM on Brexit and resigned this week - would make a "great prime minister", adding: "I think he's got what it takes." At the news conference, Mr Trump said he had been responding to the Sun's question about Mr Johnson as a possible prime minister, adding: "He has been

  3. Archaeologists scanning a Mexican pyramid for damage following September's devastating earthquake have uncovered traces of an ancient temple. The temple is nestled inside the Teopanzolco pyramid in Morelos state, 70km (43 miles) south of Mexico City. It is thought to date back to 1150 and to belong to the Tlahuica culture, one of the Aztec peoples living in central Mexico. The structure is dedicated to Tláloc, the Aztec rain god. Archaeologists say it would have measured 6m by 4m (20ft by 13ft). Among the temple's remains they also found an incense burner and ceramic shards. The discovery was made when scientists from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) used a radar to check for structural damage to the Teopanzolco pyramid in Cuernavaca. "The pyramid suffered considerable rearrangement of the core of its structure," Ms Koniecza said. Research suggests that the Tlahuica lived in dozens of small city-states in the area of modern-day Morelos state. The main structures at the archaeological site of Teopanzolco are thought to date back to the 13th Century, which means that the newly discovered temple would have predated them. Ms Koniecza says it was not unusual for the Tlahuica to build on top of older structures.

  6. The US has ramped up its trade war with China, listing $200bn (£150bn) worth of additional products it plans to place tariffs on as soon as September. The move comes just days after the two countries imposed tit-for-tat tariffs of $34bn on each other's goods. President Donald Trump had already threatened to impose additional tariffs against China if it retaliated. The list names more than 6,000 items including food products, minerals and consumer goods such as handbags. The public will have until the end of August to comment on the list before the new tariffs - to be imposed at 10% - come into effect. Asian stock markets fell sharply in early trading amid escalating trade tensions between the two economic giants. In China, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index dropped 2% while the Shanghai Composite fell 1.8%. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index shed 1.7%. The White House says the tariffs are a response to unfair trade practices by China. The US wants China to stop practices that allegedly encourage transfer of intellectual property - design and product ideas - to Chinese companies, such as requirements that foreign firms share ownership with local partners to access the Chinese market. US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said there was "no justification" for China's retaliation. "As in the past, the United States is willing to engage in efforts that could lead to a resolution of our concerns about China's unfair trade practices and to China opening its market to US goods and services," he said. "In the meantime, we will remain vigilant in defending the ability of our workers and businesses to compete on a fair and reciprocal basis."* 'Increasingly worried' Many companies in the US are opposed to the administration's use of tariffs against China, saying they risk hurting business and the economy without being likely to change behaviour. On top of the $34bn worth of tariffs that came into effect on Friday, the White House has said it would consult on tariffs on another $16bn of products. President Trump has suggested these could come into effect later this month. In total, the new import taxes President Trump is threatening to impose are almost equal to the value of China's entire goods exports to the US, worth more than $500bn last year. "It's a difficult situation for a number of our companies. They're getting increasingly worried about where this is all going," Ed Brzytwa, director of international trade for the American Chemistry Council, which represents chemical companies, told the BBC on Tuesday before the latest measures were announced. "They can't figure out what the end game is."

  8. The leaders of Ethiopia and Eritrea have signed a declaration saying that the state of war between the two countries is over. A peace deal ending the 1998-2000 border conflict has never been fully implemented and there has been tension between the neighbours ever since. The countries have also agreed to re-establish trade and diplomatic ties. Family members divided by the dispute are now able to telephone each other for the first time since the war. Ethiopian journalist Shishay Wores was contacted by one of his brothers in Eritrea. "For a moment my heart stopped beating, my voice was shaking and I was struggling for words. It took me a while to calm down and talk to my brother." The declaration came at a landmark meeting between the two countries' leaders in Eritrea's capital, Asmara. The summit between Eritrea's President Isaias Afewerki and Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed marked the first time the neighbours' heads of state had met for nearly two decades. Why is this such a big deal? The two countries have been in a state of "no war, no peace" since 2000, when a peace deal ended a war in which tens of thousands of people were killed. A border commission set up under the peace agreement ruled that the town of Badme, the flashpoint for the conflict, was part of Eritrea but Ethiopia refused to accept this and so normal relations were never resumed.* The rivalry affected the whole region with each country normally taking opposite positions whatever the question. They also took rival sides in Somalia's long conflict - Eritrea was accused of backing Islamist groups, while Ethiopia, a US ally, supported the internationally recognised government. Until now, Eritrea has always said that war could resume at any time and so had national conscription, which could last indefinitely. This is one of the main reasons why so many Eritreans try to leave the country and seek asylum elsewhere. When Abiy Ahmed took over as prime minister of Ethiopia three months ago, he indicated that change could be on the cards but few imagined it could happen this quickly, says BBC Tigrinya editor Samuel Ghebrehiwet, As well as his overtures to Eritrea, Mr Abiy has lifted a state of emergency, freed political prisoners and announced economic reforms. What are people saying about it? Mr Abiy's surprise visit to Asmara, that began on Sunday, was hailed as historic. Asmara resident Mela Gebre Medhin said on Twitter that she had "goosebumps" thinking about what happened.

  13. At least four of a group of boys trapped inside a cave in northern Thailand for two weeks have been been brought out, say the Thai Navy Seals. Rescuers decided to go ahead with the hazardous operation on Sunday because of fears of rising waters. Divers are guiding the 12 boys and their coach through darkness and submerged passageways towards the mouth of the Tham Luang cave system. They are being rescued in groups. It is unclear how long the mission will take. However, it is moving much faster than officials had earlier predicted. "The fourth Wild Boar is out of the cave," said the Thai Navy Seals in a Facebook post, referring to the name of the boys' football team. They said they were out by 19:47 local time (12:47 GMT). The BBC's Dan Johnson, who is at the scene, said doctors went to assess the boys on Saturday and decided on a priority list, sending the weakest out first. What is happening at the cave? A huge volunteer and media operation has built up around the mouth of the cave over the past week. But early on Sunday, journalists were told they had to move down the road, sparking speculation that a rescue mission was about to begin. Narongsak Osottanakorn, who has been leading the operation, then confirmed that 18 divers had gone in to get the boys. "This is D-Day," he said. "The boys are ready to face any challenges." He added that the boys had all been assessed by a doctor and were "very fit physically and mentally... They are determined and focused". The group and their families had all given their agreement that they should be moved as soon as possible, he said. 'I am dying to see him. I miss my son' How are they bringing them out? Getting to and from where the boys are has been an exhausting 11-hour round trip even for the experienced divers. The process includes a mixture of walking, wading, climbing and diving - all in complete darkness - along guide ropes already in place. Wearing full-face masks, which are easier for novice divers than traditional respirators, each boy is being accompanied by two divers, who will also carry their air supply. The toughest section is about halfway out - at a section called "T-Junction", which is so tight the divers have to take off their air tanks to get through. Beyond that a cavern - called Chamber 3 - has been turned into a forward base for the divers. There, they can rest before making the last, easier walk out to the entrance. They are expecting to be taken straight to hospital in Chiang Rai town. He lost consciousness and could not be revived. His colleagues have said they "will not let the sacrifice of our friend go to waste". In an indication of quite how dangerous the journey will be, a former Thai navy diver died in the caves earlier this week. Saman Gunan was returning from a mission to provide the group with air tanks.

  17. Genesis' flagship sedan carries over almost entirely unchanged from its debut last year as the new company focuses its energy on expanding its product line. Though that means the G90 retains a few faults, we think there are plenty of reasons luxury sedan shoppers should give it a careful look. The 2018 Genesis G90 delivers a spacious and luxurious interior that's backed up by a blissfully hushed and smooth ride. Add a giant list of standard features that will satisfy all but the most tech-obsessed buyer and the option of a robust V8 engine, and you have all the building blocks of a traditional luxury sedan. As noted, it's not all wine and roses. Although the interior makes a strong first impression, most of what looks like metal is actually plastic, the genuine wood trim looks a bit fake, and there are a few sharp edges to be found where the generally impressive build quality slips just a little. Genesis also lags behind most other dedicated luxury brands in terms of gadgets and gewgaws. The BMW 7 Series or Mercedes-Benz S Class, especially with a few options, undoubtedly offer more upscale interiors with finer materials. But both are significantly more expensive, and that price difference can easily more than double with the addition of features such as adaptive cruise control and an upgraded sound system. Overall, we highly recommend taking a look at the 2018 Genesis G90. It may not have a premium badge, but in most of the ways that count, the G90 delivers a premium experience at an significant discount. Notably, we picked the 2018 Genesis G90 as one of Edmunds' Best AWD Sedans for 2018. what's new ? For 2018, the 3.3T Premium gets adaptive LED headlights, while the 5.0 Ultimate adds a rear-seat entertainment system with dual 10.3-inch screens. Also new is a CD/DVD player for both trims. we recommend There's no wrong answer here since even the base 3.3T Premium trim is an impressive luxury sedan with just about all the bells and whistles. Considering there's only a small difference in sticker price and fuel economy between the trims, we'd opt for the 5.0 Ultimate. The eight-cylinder engine sounds great, and you get a significant upgrade to the rear seats. We also have to admit to having a soft spot for a stately, rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan powered by a substantial V8. trim levels & features The 2018 Genesis G90 is a large luxury sedan with seating for five. Other than colors, shoppers have only two choices to make: V6 or V8 engine and rear- or all-wheel-drive. The 3.3T Premium model has a turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 (365 horsepower, 376 pound-feet of torque) under the hood, while the 5.0 Ultimate sports a 5.0-liter V8 (420 hp, 383 lb-ft). Both engines use an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and either model can be equipped with all-wheel drive. Driving Not all luxury sedans are optimized to be road-going missiles, but that doesn't permit them to be slugs, either. The G90's base turbo V6 engine is more than sufficient to get the job done, and the adaptive suspension and AWD system allow the G90 to easily tackle a curve or two. Comfort Genesis has the comfort game figured out. Highly adjustable seats with ventilation and heat, a plush suspension, an effective climate system and a whisper-quiet cabin create a business-class environment for your commuting pleasure. Interior The full-size European luxury sedans set a high bar, but the G90 holds its own when it comes to the fundamentals of a well-executed cabin. The controls and interfaces aren't overly complicated; you can climb in and out with ease, and passenger space is comparable to the rest of the class. Technology The G90 comes fully stocked with tech, and it's all included. The Lexicon audio system should please just about any audiophile, and the suite of active driver aids and telematic functions show how bullish Genesis is on technology. Now, we just have to wait for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
