  3. China's commerce ministry said it had lodged a new complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO). Meanwhile, Russia said it would introduce extra duties on a range of products imported from the US. Beijing has accused the US of starting the "largest trade war in economic history". What tariffs are now in effect? US tariffs on $34bn (£25.7bn) of Chinese goods came into effect on Friday. China retaliated by imposing a similar 25% tariff on 545 US products - including cars, soya beans and lobsters - also worth a total of $34bn. Russia is introducing extra duties on a range of products imported from the US that can be replaced by locally made equivalents. They include road-building equipment, products for the oil and gas industry, and tools used in mining. Mr Trump has already imposed tariffs on imported washing machines and solar panels, and started charging levies on the imports of steel and aluminium from the European Union, Mexico and Canada. The US tariffs imposed so far would affect the equivalent of 0.6% of global trade and account for 0.1% of global GDP, according to Morgan Stanley. What is President Trump threatening? The US president said America might target Chinese goods worth $500bn - the total value of Chinese imports in 2017. The White House had previously said it would consult on tariffs on another $16bn of products, which Mr Trump has suggested could come into effect later this month. Mr Trump said: "You have another 16 [billion dollars] in two weeks, and then, as you know, we have $200bn in abeyance and then after the $200bn, we have $300bn in abeyance. OK? So we have 50 plus 200 plus almost 300." The American tariffs are the result of Mr Trump's attempt to protect US jobs and stop what he calls "unfair transfers of American technology and intellectual property to China".
  4. Call of Duty: WW2 – United Front DLC reviewed by David Jagneaux on PlayStation 4. Also available on Xbox One and PC. The First 15 Minutes of Call of Duty WW2: Zombies – The Tortured Path DLC All in all, Call of Duty: WW2’s United Front DLC feels experimental and exciting in some ways, while safer and dull in others. The changes to the Zombies mode dramatically shake up the formula and make it a high point worth visiting, but otherwise, the mostly underwhelming new maps aren’t breaking any new ground. When I first played Call of Duty: WW2 at release, it felt like a bizarre omission to not visit Stalingrad as a multiplayer destination. Over the years I feel like I’ve fought battles on that field countless times, because as the largest conflict to take place in all of WW2, it’s always been a staple for shooters based on the war. United Front finally brings it back, and it’s the best of the three new maps. Stalingrad is a classic arrangement: two bases at opposite ends of a war-torn city with plenty of carnage in between. I’d have loved to see the map adapted to a larger-scale War mode mission, but it feels great to return there even still. It really doesn’t offer anything we haven’t seen in these types of shooters before, but it fits like a glove. Seeing the snow flurries and dilapidated buildings rendered in gloriously high resolution with HDR on the PS4 Pro made a setting I’d seen many times feel new again. For that reason, Stalingrad is easily one of my favorite maps in all of CoD: WW2. The other two new maps for multiplayer aren’t as memorable. First up is Market Garden, which takes place at a mansion in the Netherlands. It’s a tight-quarters map with lots of walls and corners making it difficult to really take in and appreciate the more natural beauty on display. Visually, it’s quite impressive and that contrasts well with the violence and bloodshed. The center of the map is laid out well for Domination and other similar game modes, except that camping is extremely easy and rampant. Overall, Market Garden is just fine, but it feels a whole lot like what CoD: WW2 already has plenty of: smaller scale, close-quarters maps Finally, the third new multiplayer map is Monte Cassino and it’s probably the worst of the bunch. The setting is a badly damaged Italian village beneath a monastery, and the semi-unique hook is the focus on verticality created by plenty of rooftops and cliff edges to flank along. The problem is that this style of map doesn’t really lend itself well to the lack of mobility found in a WW2-era shooter. Something like this in Advanced Warfare or Black Ops 3 might fare better because you can easily scale and access high points in those games, but as it stands it just feels a little tedious. If you’re not sniping from a rooftop or trying to sneak up on snipers and campers then you’re just running around getting shot by someone you didn’t see. The best CoD: WW2 maps have a hint of verticality, but instead focus on varied yet level playing fields. available for ps4 / pc gamer

  8. a wild banana that may hold the key to protecting the world's edible banana crop has been put on the extinction list. It is found only in Madagascar, where there are just five mature trees left in the wild. Scientists say the plant needs to be conserved, as it may hold the secret to keeping bananas safe for the future. Most bananas consumed around the world are of a type known as the Cavendish, which is vulnerable to a plant pest. The race is on to develop new banana varieties that are both tasty to eat and resilient enough to survive attack from Panama disease. The Madagascan banana has evolved in isolation on an island cut off from the mainland, and may have special properties. Richard Allen, senior conservation assessor at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, said the species (Ensete perrieri) could have in-built tolerance to drought or disease. "It doesn't have Panama disease in it, so perhaps it has genetic traits against the disease," he said. "We don't know until we actually do research on the banana itself, but we can't do the research until it's saved." Kew scientists searched for the banana plant in Madagascar and found it was almost extinct in the wild. Floral haven They hope that its inclusion on the latest official Red List of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) will highlight its plight. Dr Hélène Ralimanana of the Kew Madagascar Conservation Centre says the plant is part of the island's rich floral heritage. "It is very important to conserve the wild banana because it has large seeds which can offer an opportunity to find a gene to improve the cultivated banana," she said. If the wild banana can be protected, there will be opportunities to collect the seeds and look at the plant's genetic make-up. The Madagascan banana produces seeds within the fruit, which means it is not palatable to eat. But cross-breeding could lead to a new type of banana that would be both edible and resilient. The banana grows on the edge of forests, where it is vulnerable to damage from severe weather events as well as from logging, fires and the clearing of forests for farming. Why are bananas vulnerable to disease? Bananas are clones - which means they are all the same. So, if the disease is present in one plant it can spread quickly throughout the whole po[CENSORED]tion. What's the problem? I can still buy bananas in the shops That is the case for now, but it may not be so in the future. The disease affecting the Cavendish is currently confined to Asia, but if it were to spread to the Americas, it could wipe out the world's banana crop. This actually happened in the 1950s with a type of banana known as the Gros Michel (often known as Big Mike). The song, "Yes! We Have No Bananas," is said to have been inspired by a shortage of Gros Michel bananas, which began with an outbreak of the fungus behind Panama disease. Gros Michel bananas were replaced by Cavendish bananas, which are named after William Cavendish, the 6th Duke of Devonshire, who lived at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. Bananas have been grown at Chatsworth since 1830 when head gardener Joseph Paxton propagated a specimen imported from Mauritius. Nearly every banana now eaten is directly descended from this plant. What do we know about the Madagascan banana? It goes by the scientific name, Ensete perrieri, and is listed as Critically Endangered. It is found in the tropical forests of the country's western region where it is under threat from deforestation: only five mature trees are now reported to remain in the wild.

  11. A man and woman are in a critical condition after being exposed to an unknown substance, which counter terrorism officers are investigating. The pair, believed to be Charlie Rowley, 45, and Dawn Sturgess, 44, were found unconscious at a house in Amesbury, Wiltshire, on Saturday. It is understood tests are being carried out on the substance at a government chemical weapons laboratory. Amesbury is about eight miles from the Salisbury Russian spy poisoning site. Former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned with Novichok, a suspected military nerve agent, in March. The substance Novichok was identified by the defence research facility at Porton Down which is understood to be carrying out tests on the latest substance The government's emergency committee, Cobra, has met in the Cabinet Office at an official level to discuss the events in Amesbury, which is being "treated with the utmost seriousness". A further meeting of the committee will be held on Wednesday evening to hear updates on the situation which was initially treated as a suspected drugs-related incident. The Met said counter terrorism officers are now working with Wiltshire Police "given the recent events in Salisbury". Wiltshire Police said it was "open-minded" about the cause after the pair, who are British nationals, were found at the house in Muggleton Road, Amesbury. Paramedics were called twice to the property, firstly in the morning after Ms Sturgess had collapsed and then later the same day after reports Mr Rowley had also fallen unwell. While it was not clear whether a crime had been committed, the force said, a number of places in Amesbury and Salisbury known to have been frequented by the couple had been cordoned off. Are you in the area? Do you have any information you can share? Email haveyoursay@bbc.co.uk. Russian spy: What happened to the Skripals? It said the public can expect to see an increased police presence in and around Amesbury and Salisbury. "It was initially believed that the two patients fell ill after using possibly heroin or crack cocaine from a contaminated batch of drugs," Wiltshire Police said. "They are both currently receiving treatment for suspected exposure to an unknown substance at Salisbury District Hospital," it added. Mr Rowley and Ms Sturgess are believed to have attended a family fun day at Amesbury Baptist Church on Saturday afternoon before they were found unconscious in the property they had just moved into. Roy Collins, church secretary, said "nobody else has suffered any ill-effects" from attending the community event and "there was nothing going on that was nefarious". "There have been no reports of any other incidents," he said. "We are all quite puzzled and shocked - naturally the connection with Salisbury and recent events there mean there is a heightened public interest." Boots has closed its Amesbury store as "a precautionary measure" to allow police to carry out an investigation, a spokesperson confirmed. At the scene: Charlotte Callen, Home Affairs Correspondent Neighbours tell me the peace at this usually quiet new estate in Amesbury was broken at about 18:30 BST on Saturday evening. It was hot and many were out having barbecues when they heard sirens and saw flashing lights as first ambulances, then the fire brigade and police arrived in Muggleton Road. They saw seven fire engines and fire officers wearing hazmat suits at the scene. The house was cordoned off and the word here was that this was a suspected drugs overdose. This morning many are in disbelief that this has been declared a major incident and that so many reporters from national media have descended on their doorsteps. Two police cars and three officers are here as Wiltshire Police is yet again dealing with a major incident just a few miles away from where Sergei and Yulia Skripal were found. Wiltshire and Dorset Fire Rescue Service said seven vehicles and two specialist ones had attended Muggleton Road on Saturday evening. Crews in hazmat suits, which are worn to deal with dangerous or hazardous substances, were sent to the scene in what the fire service described as a "standard procedure response". Chloe Edwards, a 17-year-old college student who lives near the cordoned-off flat, said she was having dinner when "all these emergency vehicles turned up" and was told to stay inside. "They were putting on these green suits and we thought it was the gas as our electricity was turned off as well," she said. "We wanted to know what happened and with the Russian attack happening not long ago we just assumed the worst. "I am not sure how long they were in there but we couldn't get out of the house for two-and-a-half hours." Local resident Jake Murphy said he was watching the football on Tuesday night when "all these police cars appeared". "I didn't know what was happening," he said. Justin Doughty, who lives opposite the police cordon, said none of the residents have been "told anything by the police". "We would have thought the police would have been more forthcoming and keep us in the loop." A government source said: "Senior Whitehall officials are being kept informed of what is going on on the ground as we seek to establish the facts of this case. "No definitive conclusions have yet been established." Wiltshire's Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson said the police had worked hard at "containing any risk that might be there". "There's no reason to think it's connected with matters of last month," he said. "I haven't seen anything in this incident yet that I would consider to be an overreaction in terms of previous incidents, it all seems fairly textbook." Public Health England said it did not believe there was a "significant health risk" to the wider public, although its advice was being continually assessed. The hospital was "open as usual" and advised patients to attend routine appointments unless contacted and advised to do otherwise.
