  2. Israel says it has carried out an evacuation of members of Syria's White Helmets civil defence group from a war zone in south-western Syria. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they had acted on a request from the US, the UK and other European nations. Some 422 volunteers and family members were taken to Jordan via the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights overnight. The White Helmets describe themselves as a volunteer workforce that acts to save people in Syria's war zones. Although they operate only in rebel-held areas, they say they are non-partisan. Supporters of President Bashar al-Assad, and his ally Russia, say the White Helmets support the rebels and also have links to jihadist groups. The unstoppable momentum of Assad’s war Why is there a war in Syria? Jordan said it had authorised the passage of 800 people, but it was later reported that several hundred were unable to make the journey. Those successfully evacuated included about 100 White Helmets, with the rest family members. The evacuated volunteers had been working in an area controlled by the Syrian opposition in the south-west of the country and had been trapped by a government offensive. They were driven to the border with the Golan Heights and taken on from there by Israeli troops. The IDF said they had "completed a humanitarian effort to rescue members of a Syrian civil organisation and their families", saying there was an "immediate threat to their lives". They said the civilians were transferred "through Israel" and "subsequently to a neighbouring country". Although Israel is not directly involved in the Syria conflict, the two countries have been in a state of war for decades. Despite the intervention, the IDF said that "Israel continues to maintain a non-intervention policy regarding the Syrian conflict". Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon later confirmed the evacuees were White Helmet members and their families, though neither he nor the IDF named the country receiving the civilians. However, Jordan's government confirmed it had "authorised the United Nations to organise the passage of 800 Syrian citizens through Jordan to be resettled in Western countries". It said that "Britain, Germany and Canada made a legally binding undertaking to resettle them within a specified period of time due to 'a risk to their lives'". UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt hailed the operation in a tweet A later statement from Mr Hunt and International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt said: "White Helmets have been the target of attacks and, due to their high profile, we judged that, in these particular circumstances, the volunteers required immediate protection." The UK would provide such protection to "as many of the volunteers and their families as possible". "We pay tribute to the brave and selfless work that White Helmet volunteers have done to save Syrians on all sides of the conflict," the statement read. The White Helmet members and their families will be held in a "restricted area" of Jordan and assessed by the UN, pending resettlement.

  16. Five teenage students have drowned in a river in Bangladesh moments after playing a football match, police say. The boys, from a school in the south-eastern Cox's Bazar district, went to bathe after a friendly game between supporters of Argentina and Brazil. They were then swept away by the strong current of the Matamuhuri river. Police recovered the bodies on Saturday evening, some six hours after the boys drowned. Tens of thousands of people attended their funeral on Sunday. Local police chief Bakhtiar Uddin Chowdhury said that 22 schoolboys played a friendly football match on Saturday after dividing themselves between supporters of the two South American teams. He said that, following the game, six boys went to the river. The area near the Matamuhuri Bridge where they had chosen to swim was "very deep", he added. "We rescued a boy. Later five bodies were recovered. The dead included two brothers," he told AFP news agency. 21. Israel says it has struck dozens of Hamas military targets in northern Gaza in retaliation for assaults including more than 90 rocket attacks. Palestinian health officials said two people were killed and 12 injured in an air strike in Gaza City. Three Israelis were injured by a rocket in Sderot. Israel's targets included a battalion HQ and a training facility used by Hamas, its military said. The operation is one of Israel's broadest since the 2014 war with Hamas. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said it struck facilities used by the militant group, which dominates Gaza, including a battalion headquarters in Beit Lahia, a training camp located in a high-rise building in the al-Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza, weapons storage facilities and rocket launchers. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the operation could continue. "We will expand the scope of our reaction to Hamas' terror attacks as much as needed. If Hamas doesn't get our message today, it will tomorrow," he said. Witnesses told Reuters news agency an Israeli strike had hit an empty building in Gaza City and that the casualties were passers-by. Hamas said another Palestinian had died after being shot by Israeli troops during border protests on Friday. The IDF said dozens of rockets had been fired on Israel from within Gaza. One rocket hit a home in the town of Sderot. Three people suffered shrapnel wounds. The attacks come amid an escalation of violence in the region in recent months. They coincided with mass demonstrations along the border which saw thousands of Palestinians express their support for the declared right of Palestinian refugees to return to their ancestral homes in what is now Israel - as well as demanding an end to the blockade of Gaza imposed by Israel and Egypt.
  22. US President Donald Trump has criticised the administration of his predecessor Barack Obama over alleged Russian hacking to help him win the 2016 presidential election. "Why didn't they do something about it?" he tweeted, adding that Mr Obama had been told about it before the vote. It follows pressure on Mr Trump to cancel Monday's talks with Russia's Vladimir Putin following the indictment of 12 Russians on Friday. Russia denies allegations of hacking. Mr Trump is due to meet Mr Putin in the Finnish capital Helsinki. Russia said it was looking forward to the meeting. "We consider Trump a negotiating partner," said Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov. "The state of bilateral relations is very bad. We have to start to set them right." Four intriguing lines in Mueller charges Who's who in Trump-Russia drama? However the hacking allegations have sparked a heated war of words between Washington and Moscow. US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein insisted that "the goal of the conspirators was to have an impact on the election". But Russia's foreign ministry said the claims were a "heap of conspiracy schemes" intended to "damage the atmosphere" before Monday's summit. It said there was no evidence linking any of the dozen officials to hacking or military intelligence. What are the allegations? The 11-count indictment names the Russians defendants, alleging they began cyber-attacks in March 2016 on the email accounts of staff for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. They are accused of using keystroke reading software to spy on the chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and hack into the party's computers. Mr Rosenstein said the conspirators used fictitious online personas, including "DCLeaks" and "Guccifer 2.0", to release thousands of stolen emails. They are also accused of stealing the data of half a million voters from a state election board website. What pressure is there to cancel the talks? During a joint news conference with UK Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday, Mr Trump said he would "absolutely" ask the Russian president about alleged election meddling. But top Democrats have urged him to cancel the planned summit altogether following the indictment. "President Trump should absolutely cancel this meeting with Putin on Monday," said DNC chairman Tom Perez. "He is not a friend of the United States." "President Trump should cancel his meeting with Vladimir Putin until Russia takes demonstrable and transparent steps to prove that they won't interfere in future elections," said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.
