  1. US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has responded to Donald Trump's latest attack on him by insisting that the justice department he heads will not bend to political pressure. The apparent rebuke of Mr Trump came after the president said Mr Sessions was not in control of his department. Mr Trump has been vociferous in his criticism of the Department of Justice. He has been particularly riled by its handling of the inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Mr Sessions, an early supporter of Mr Trump's campaign, has stepped aside from that inquiry to avoid a potential conflict of interest and handed control to his deputy, Rod Rosenstein. That decision by Mr Sessions, and the ongoing progress of the inquiry under special counsel Robert Mueller - which is also reportedly now looking into whether Mr Trump has attempted to obstruct justice - have provoked frequent outbursts from the president, both in person and on his Twitter feed. The president remains insistent that there was no collusion between his campaign and the Russian government, and denies he has attempted to obstruct justice Impeach me and the market crashes - Trump After the latest exchanges, two key Republican senators signalled that they would support Mr Trump if he were to fire Mr Sessions after the November mid-term elections. However, other Republicans told Politico they thought this would be a bad move and said they were standing by the attorney general. What did Sessions say? "I took control of the Department of Justice the day I was sworn in," the attorney general said in a statement. "While I am attorney general, the actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations. "I demand the highest standards, and where they are not met, I take action." He added: "No nation has a more talented, more dedicated group of law enforcement investigators and prosecutors than the United States. "I am proud to serve with them and proud of the work we have done in successfully advancing the rule of law." Previously, Mr Sessions had been largely non-committal following criticism of him by the president, who appears to believe that Mr Sessions should have shown him greater loyalty instead of recusing himself from the Russia inquiry. What did Trump say about Sessions? In an earlier interview with the Fox and Friends programme, Mr Trump said: "I put in an attorney general that never took control of the justice department. Jeff Sessions never took control of the justice department and it's a sort of an incredible thing. Turning to the Russia inquiry, the president said: "Jeff Sessions recused himself, which he shouldn't have done. Or he should have told me [before I appointed him]. "Even my enemies say that Jeff Sessions should have told you that he was going to recuse himself, and then you wouldn't have put him in. He took the job and then he said I'm going to recuse myself. I said: 'What kind of a man is this?' "You know the only reason I gave him the job? Because I felt loyalty, he was an original supporter. He was on the campaign. He knows there was no collusion." A formidable enemy By Tara McKelvey, White House reporter Jeff Sessions was originally brought into the Trump campaign because of his hardline views on immigration. A stubborn man, Mr Sessions fought for decades for anti-immigration policies. Still, he has a gentle manner. I've seen him greeting colleagues with a shy smile at White House events. Mr Trump prides himself on never giving up, and he admires grit and determination in others - and found those traits in Mr Sessions. But now he is driving President Trump crazy. Mr Sessions is just as determined as Mr Trump is - and also refuses to back down. Only Mr Sessions is guided by a set of bedrock conservative principles, rather than the egotism and quicksilver impulses that fuel Mr Trump's tweets and, increasingly, his TV interviews. For these reasons Mr Sessions is a formidable enemy, and the battle between these two men could be long.

  9. Once upon a time, two early humans of different ancestry met at a cave in Russia. Some 50,000 years later, scientists have confirmed that they had a daughter together. DNA extracted from bone fragments found in the cave show the girl was the offspring of a Neanderthal mother and a Denisovan father. The discovery, reported in Nature, gives a rare insight into the lives of our closest ancient human relatives. Neanderthals and Denisovans were humans like us, but belonged to different species. "We knew from previous studies that Neanderthals and Denisovans must have occasionally had children together," says Viviane Slon, researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI-EVA) in Leipzig, Germany. "But I never thought we would be so lucky as to find an actual offspring of the two groups." Is everyone part Neanderthal? Present-day, non-African humans have a small proportion of their DNA that comes from Neanderthals. Some other non-African po[CENSORED]tions, depending on where they live, also have a fraction of their DNA that comes from an Asian people known as Denisovans. The fact the genes have been passed down the generations shows that interbreeding must have happened. However, the only known site where fossil evidence of both Denisovans and Neanderthals has been found is at Denisova cave in the Altai Mountains of Siberia. And very few - less than 20 - so-called archaic humans (those belonging to species other than our own, Homo sapiens) have had their genomes sequenced. "Out of this very little number we find one individual that has half-and-half mixed ancestry, " Dr Slon told BBC News. When other studies are taken into account, "you start to get a picture that over all of our evolutionary history humans always mixed with each other". When and where did Neanderthals and Denisovans live? Neanderthals and Denisovans are known to have overlapped in time in Eurasia. The two groups lived until about 40,000 years ago; Neanderthals in the west and Denisovans in the east. As Neanderthals migrated eastwards, they may have encountered Denisovans at times, as well as early modern humans. "Neanderthals and Denisovans may not have had many opportunities to meet," says Svante Pääbo, director of MPI-EVA. "But when they did, they must have mated frequently - much more so than we previously thought." What do we know about the girl and her family? The girl's story has been pieced together from a single fragment of bone found in the Denisova cave by Russian archaeologists several years ago. It was brought to Leipzig for genetic analysis. "The fragment is part of a long bone, and we can estimate that this individual was at least 13 years old," says Bence Viola of the University of Toronto. The researchers deduced that the girl's mother was genetically closer to Neanderthals who lived in western Europe than to a Neanderthal individual who lived earlier in Denisova Cave. This shows that Neanderthals migrated between western and eastern Europe and Asia tens of thousands of years before they died out. Genetic tests also revealed that the Denisovan father had at least one Neanderthal ancestor further back in his family tree.

  15. US President Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen has reportedly entered into a plea deal with federal prosecutors in New York. Mr Cohen, 51, is tipped to plead guilty to felony charges including tax fraud and campaign finance violations. He had previously admitted to arranging hush money for a woman who claimed she had an affair with Mr Trump, a possible election funding violation. Mr Cohen appeared in a Manhattan courtroom on Tuesday afternoon. He has surrendered to the FBI in New York and is in the custody of authorities. The charges against him could carry prison time. The legal manoeuvres comes as a jury in Alexandria, Virginia, spent a fourth day deliberating bank and tax fraud charges against Paul Manafort, Mr Trump's campaign chairman during the 2016 presidential election. Jurors have reached a verdict on eight of the charges against Mr Manafort, but have told the judge that they cannot reach a verdict on the other 10 charges. According to Politico, a source close to Mr Cohen said he agreed to the deal "to save millions of dollars, protect his family, and limit his exposure". Mr Cohen worked at the Trump Organization for more than a decade and continued to serve as Mr Trump's personal lawyer and fixer after the 2016 election. The New York Times reported on Sunday night that federal investigators were looking into Mr Cohen's business activities. They were focusing on more than $20m (£15.5m) in loans to taxi businesses owned by Mr Cohen and his family, according to the newspaper. What does the deal mean? Anthony Zurcher, BBC News, Washington Ever since federal investigators raided Michael Cohen's office and home back in April there was speculation that it was only a matter of time before he faced criminal consequences. The only question was whether it would come in the form of an indictment or some type of plea deal negotiated with prosecutors. It appears it will be the latter. What this means, of course, is still an open question. Mr Cohen was Donald Trump's long-time lawyer, business associate and all-around fixer. If there are skeletons in Mr Trump's closet, Mr Cohen could know where they lurk. While a plea deal doesn't guarantee that he is sharing information relevant to other federal investigations, he may be rewarded during sentencing if he does so. And the growing tension between Mr Cohen and the Trump team could make that more likely. Mr Cohen reportedly said he has details about the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between top members of Mr Trump's campaign staff and Russian nationals. He facilitated a six-figure payment on the eve of the 2016 election to an adult film actress who was poised to state that she had a sexual liaison with Mr Trump. These are topics that Mr Cohen might be inclined to flesh out in further detail, surely to the discomfort of those in the White House. The FBI seized a number of files in April on Mr Cohen's office and a hotel room used by him in New York. They reportedly conducted the raid following a tip-off from the team of special counsel Robert Mueller. Mr Mueller is investigating whether Trump campaign aides colluded with alleged Kremlin attempts to sway the 2016 presidential election his way.

  21. With All-in-ones upgrading hardware has always been a pain, shuttle aims to change that with its new somewhat low spec’d XPC P20U. With the ability to take up as little room as possible while still providing a solid experience. Shuttle Announces New Fanless 11.6 inch AIO PC Shuttles X50 fanless 15.6″ models have been used for years for this purpose though with the size considered a bit too bulky for some application. Shuttle’s range of models is now being expanded to include another fanless, but considerably smaller, 11.6″ (29.5 cm) version. Wherever larger all-in-one PCs are out of place, the XPC all-in-one P20U is right at home. Its external dimensions are just 29.9 x 27.1 x 5.0 cm (D x W x H). If tidied cable routing can be dispensed with, the height can be reduced by an additional 6.8 cm by removing the cable collector box on the bottom of the unit which is new with this model. The display, which is just under 30 cm (11.6″) diagonally, is large enough for common touchscreen applications and the size of many “thin and light” mobile 2 in 1 devices. HDMI and VGA connections are also available to connect a second (and even a third) display for individual content. Gesture-based operation using several fingers (e.g. pinch to zoom) is possible thanks to multi-touch support. The entire front of the unit is protected from dust and splashes of water according to protection class IP54, which also makes it easy to clean. Its hardware features make it particularly flexible for uses like point-of-sale applications, control tasks as well as office applications. The P20U relies on the efficient but still underpowered for real productivity tasks 1.8 GHz Intel Celeron 3865U processor with its two cores and HD Graphics 610 . Two SO-DIMM slots for a total of up to 32 GB of DDR4 RAM are available although I would argue any task that would use that much RAM would be need a much beefier CPU and GPU. An internal USB type A connection, together with the openings for external antennas, provide for a 4G module with especially strong reception, for example. . Doing away with fans at all, this model is completely silent, requires little maintenance and is suitable for continuous operation. The P20U comes with a stand which is individually adjustable to the desired angle. The stand is removable and doing so reveals a standard VESA mounting surface which enables the device to be mounted to walls or other suitable surfaces. The compact case has room for a 2.5″ drive (HDD/SSD) and an NVMe SSD in the M.2 format. A webcam, microphone and speaker, as well as WLAN, Bluetooth and Gigabit Ethernet, are already built in. Peripherals can be connected using the six USB ports and two RS-232 interfaces. Pricing And Availability The Recommended Pricing for Shuttles XPC Barebone P20U is 309.00 (ex VAT). and should be available now.
  22. New research out of the University of Waterloo has found a novel method to extend the battery life of smartphones for up to an hour each day. The researchers have developed an app which smartphone users can use to reduce the energy consumption of their devices without any significant impact on performance. "The built-in multi-window feature released with the new Android operating system allows users to have multiple windows and files open at the same time similar to a laptop, but this results in unnecessary energy drain," said Kshirasagar Naik, co-author of the study and a professor in Waterloo's faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering. "We have developed an app which users can install on their devices and use to reduce the brightness of non-critical applications. So, when you're interacting with one application, the brightness of the other window goes down thereby reduces the energy consumption of the device." The app was evaluated in an experiment involving 200 smartphone users, who downloaded the software on their devices and used it while they had multiple windows opened. It was found that when the energy saving technique was used it extended their battery life by 10 to 25 per cent. "What happens now is that you put the phone on a charger for the night and when you leave home the next day the battery is at 100 per cent, but there is a lot of behind the scenes computation and communication going on, and it drains the battery," said Naik. "By midday charge is reduced to 30 per cent. So, you need to charge the battery many times in a day, and from the user's perspective that is a big pain. "Due to the excess energy consumption, the phone becomes warmer and warmer while the frequent charging reduces the life of the battery. So, batteries that are meant to last for three years may have to be replaced in two years." The study, MultiDroid: An Energy Optimization Technique for Multi-Window Operations on OLED Smartphones, co-authored by Milind Kumar Rohit, Chiranjeev Kumar and Ginny all of the Indian Institute of Technology and Naik was recently published in IEEE Access, an open access journal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
