Brazil says it is sending its army to the Venezuelan border to "guarantee law and order" amid an influx of migrants fleeing the crisis-hit country. President Michel Temer said in a televised address on Tuesday that Venezuela's "tragic" situation threatened peace across South America. Millions of Venezuelans have fled their country due to hyperinflation, and food and medicine shortages. Brazil's move follows recent border clashes between locals and Venezuelans. Following those clashes, President Temer sent a small contingent of troops to the border town of Pacaraima, where the unrest happened. Venezuela crisis: A country in freefall The families split by Venezuela's crisis On Tuesday, he signed a decree which will deploy soldiers for two weeks along the border and federal roads of its northern state of Roraima. "The problem of Venezuela is no longer one of internal politics. It is a threat to the harmony of the whole continent," Mr Temer said. In addition to ensuring the security of Brazilians, the soldiers' role is also to look after the Venezuelan migrants' safety, the president stated. Meanwhile, neighbouring Peru has declared a 60-day health emergency in two provinces on its northern border, after health authorities expressed concerns of the spread of diseases from migrants. What is happening in Venezuela? Venezuela is in its fourth year of an economic crisis, brought on by a crash in oil prices in 2014. Four in five Venezuelans live in poverty, and people queue for hours to buy food while others are dying from a lack of medicine. This was compounded by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's decision in August to issue a new currency to manage the country's runaway inflation - a move that caused widespread confusion. Some 2.3 million citizens have fled the country since 2014, sparking the worst migration crisis in Latin American history, according to the United Nations. Regional tensions have been stoked, as neighbouring countries struggle to accommodate the exodus of Venezuelans. The UN's migration agency said last week Venezuela is heading for the same refugee "crisis moment" seen in the Mediterranean in 2015. ¨What are neighbouring countries doing?¨ There are more than a million Venezuelans in Colombia, more than half a million in Ecuador, more than 400,000 in Peru and some 60,000 in Brazil. Brazil has not said how many of its armed forces will be sent to police the border this week. One minister told journalists that troops were already in place, while another warned Brazil "needs to discipline" the influx of migrants This month, Peru began tightening its border by requiring passports instead of national ID cards from Venezuelan migrants. The first day the new rule was instituted, Peru reported a more than 50% drop in the number of migrants. But hundreds more without passports entered the country by seeking asylum. Similar regulations were introduced in Ecuador, only to be overturned by a court ruling. Brazil's northern state of Roraima has also had its attempt to close the border with Venezuela thrown out by a judge. Violence erupted in Pacaraima last week when local residents attacked makeshift camps housing Venezuelan migrants. The camps were burned down and the occupants temporarily fled back across the border. Despite the violence, the number of Venezuelans crossing daily into Brazil has continued to rise. Foreign ministers from Ecuador, Colombia and possibly Peru and Brazil are expected to meet and discuss Venezuelan migration in Ecuador next week, after top immigration officials met at an earlier summit in Colombia's capital Bogotá.

2018 Porsche Macan Buying Advice This is the best premium compact crossover for you if you’re willing to sacrifice a smidgen of practicality for a surplus of performance. Demonstrating the siren’s call of the crossover in today’s automotive market, this all-wheel-drive hatchback is the sport-car makers best-selling vehicle. In fact, it took that title from the larger Cayenne midsize crossover. There’s nothing junior-class about Macan’s performance, though, with every model in the lineup a benchmark for best-in-class road manners. Changes for model-year 2018 are minor: adjustments to some accessory displays and some new colors. Should you buy a 2018 or wait for the ‘19? Waiting for the ’19 could get you a slightly facelifted Macan; some sources in fact expected a freshening for model-year 2018. If Porsche does update the styling for ‘19, it would almost certainly make subtle changes to the nose and tail, leaving unaltered the main body. That would mark the first facelift since Macan launched as a 2015 model and would carry the crossover to its next full redesign, likely for model-year 2020 or ’21. Sources also speculate that a plug-in-hybrid variant is in the works; its introduction could coincide with a model-year 2019 freshening. Porsche and Audi are Volkswagen Group holdings and Macan is based on the platform of the first-generation 2009-2017 Audi Q5 premium-compact crossover. Changes Styling: Agate Grey Metallic joins the exterior color palette, there are minor adjustments to interior hues, and brake calipers on the Macan S model change from silver to darker Titanium Grey. Otherwise, the 2018 Macan is visually unaltered. It continues with a lineup beginning with the Base trim and ascending through Macan S, GTS, Turbo, and Turbo with Performance Package models. To Porsche’s credit, Macan’s rounded contours and athletic shoulders give it a wholly distinct appearance from the blockier first-generation Q5, with which it shared its basic understructure and key dimensions. Appearance differences between Macan models are understated. Base and S versions have round instead of rectangular fog lamps. Their front air intakes have slightly different-looking strakes and a separate row of LED daytime running lamps absent on the other models. All Macans have automatic on/off, self-leveling bi-xenon headlights, with the GTS’s front lenses and taillamps distinguished by a smoked effect. Porsche’s lengthy options lists lets buyers mix and match some of these looks. Similarly, there are a multitude of alloy wheel designs and sizes, up to 21-inches, with many optionally interchangeable among models. The standard spec gives Base and S trims 18-inch-diameter alloys and the grey brake calipers. The GTS’s standard alloys are 20s and the Turbos’ are 19s, both offset by red calipers. Macan’s interior is distinctively Porsche, as well. The tachometer is given preference over the speedometer in the gauge cluster, and the ignition switch is to the left of the steering column – a reminder of the brand’s racing heritage. Separating the front bucket seats for a sporty, cockpit ambience is a prominent center console with more than two-dozen buttons and toggles to control everything from the power front seats, to suspension and climate adjustments, to the tone of the exhaust. Standard upholstery for Base, S, and GTS is a combination of leather and Alcantara; Turbos come with full leather, an Alcantara headliner, and, like the GTS, brushed aluminum instead of piano-black cabin accents. In all, it’s a driver-focused environment, with hint of private-aircraft ambience and a priority on sporty panache. Cabin materials are top notch, but back-seaters can feel cramped and closed-in, disadvantaged for headroom and legroom and deprived of much outward visibility by the relatively small rear windows. That roof styling takes a toll on cargo volume, too. The 17.1 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 53 with the 40/20/40 split-bench folded is akin to that of “four-door coupe” off-shoots of rivals, such as the fastback X4 version of BMW’s X3. Mechanical: Powertrains are unchanged after expanding for model-year 2017 to include the Base edition’s four-cylinder engine and the GTS’s not-quite-Turbo-model-potent V-6. The Base Macan’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four is shared with the Q5, where it also generates 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. It furnishes more than adequate acceleration – Porsche says 0-60 mph in under 6.4 seconds — but renders this crossover a tepid-feeling against the ferocious twin-turbo V-6s in the other Macans. In the S model, the 3.0-liter six makes 340 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. In the GTS, it has 360 horses and 369 pound-feet (in the 2018 Audi SQ5, it rates 354 and 369, respectively). Both the S and GTS do 0-60 in around 5 seconds. Impressive – until you experience the mid-4-second thrust of the 3.6-liter in the Turbo models. It has 400 horses and 406 pound-feet of torque in the “basic” Turbo, and 440 and 442, respectively, as fortified in the Turbo with Performance Package. All these engines work through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that acts like an impressively smooth, conventional automatic when left in Drive. Canny software enables it to downshift on its own as you approach a corner and hold the lower gear for a rapid exit. The transmission rifles off racecar-like gear changes when in Sport Plus mode or when controlled manually via the shift lever or the steering-wheel paddles standard on all models. Sport Plus mode is part of the Sport Chrono Package, which is standard on the Turbo Performance Package and a $1,310 option otherwise. This includes launch control that shaves a few tenths from 0-60 times; a digital stopwatch atop dashboard; and the Sport Plus button on center console that sharpens powertrain and suspension settings. Dicing with city traffic or storming an open road storming, any Macan is a model of composure and precision. This crossover’s basic understructure is shared with the front-wheel-drive architecture of the first-generation Audi Q5 compact crossover. But the comparably unsporting DNA of front-wheel drive is effectively eradicated by Porsche’s powertrain and chassis tuning. Every Macan has all-wheel drive calibrated for on-road handling but light-duty off-roading is no problem, thanks to available traction-enhancing settings and an air suspension that can pump up an additional 1.5 inches of ground clearance. The GTS is essentially a Turbo Performance Package model without the bigger engine and like the Turbo Performance Package it comes with Porsche’s Active Suspension Management air suspension. An option for the other Macans, this provides three manually selectable settings – Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus – to customize the already surprisingly supple ride and further hone handling. Yet another handling asset is Torque Vectoring Plus, a $1,500 option that can brake individual rear wheels and includes an automatic variable differential lock Features: Only details change, leaving an approach that supplies as standard what each model requires to achieve its performance target, and then offers options to individualize styling, luxury, and connectivity — and achieve even higher performance. We’re clear on the concept – Porsche buyers adore customization – but grate at making you pay extra to equip your Macan with key safety features. Foremost among these is autonomous emergency braking capable of stopping the crossover to prevent a frontal collision. It’s optional on every ’18 Macan as part of the $1,440 Porsche Active Safe system, which also includes adaptive cruise control that can maintain a set distance from traffic ahead and, with stop-and-go capability, can relieve some traffic-jam stress. All Macans come with lane-departure warning, but blind-spot alert and lane-maintaining automatic steering correction are options at $700 apiece. Certainly, some Porsche drivers believe they’re better off without automatic driver assists. And, yes, $1,440 or so is a pittance on planet Porsche. But these driver aids — as standard equipment – are de rigueur in any premium segment. (Autonomous emergency braking is a prerequisite for the industry’s most coveted accolade, “Top Safety Pick+” status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). In addition to the model-year changes noted earlier, the climate system gains an optimized active carbon filter and the instrument cluster an air-circulation display; the audio screen now visually indicates volume changes; and some display interfaces have new “tiles.” Every ’18 Macan returns with a power liftgate, Bluetooth connectivity, power front seats, and a 7-inch dashboard touchscreen. Memory power front seats start with the S trim; the GTS has heated sports seats, and Turbos adaptive Sport seats. An imbedded navigation system is standard on the Turbo models and a $1,780 option on the others. On models without navigation, the $1,020 Porsche Car Connect option enables GPS apps via Apple CarPlay and access to a free app for Apple and Android smartphones that furnishes remote door locking, location reminder, and notification of unauthorized movement and tracking in the event of theft. Prices Introduction of the four-cylinder Base model for 2017 allowed Porsche to reduce Macan’s price of entry by some $6,000, to under $49,000. Adding the GTS provided a taste of Turbo-model thrills for $8,800 less than the top-of-the-line performers. Still, it’s no surprise that this crossover’s base prices are at the upper end of the segment; the Turbo with Performance Package in fact has the highest starting price in the class. (Base prices in this review include the manufacturer’s $1,050 destination fee.) The 2018 Macan Base model is priced from $48,850 and the ’18 Macan S from $56,450. The 2018 Macan GTS starts at $69,950. Base price is $78,250 for the Turbo model and $88,750 for the Turbo with Performance Package. All these models are available with a plethora of options, most of which maintain their package content and price throughout the line. Using the Base version as an example, here’s a selection of functional, dress-up, and convenience items: Any exterior hue other than black or white is $700, but Porsche will paint your Macan to your color sample for $6,520. Twenty-one-inch alloys are available on any trim level at $4,800-$5,400, depending on the model. Leather upholstery is available in a variety of shades and grades, including Espresso Natural Leather at $4,920. Carbon fiber cabin trim is $1,500, a Burmester surround-sound audio system is $5,700. The $2,590 Premium Package consists of the Porsche Dynamic Light System (steering linked low beams and “increased light distribution” over 68 mph), Bose audio, auto-dimming mirrors, and heated front and rear seats. The $5,950 Premium Package Plus – adds 14-way power cooled front seats with memory, a panoramic moonroof, and Porsche Entry & Drive (hands free unlocking and key-free twist engine start). LED headlamps including the Porsche Dynamic Light system are $1,900. At $2,610-$4,350, various “SportDesign” packages include special front-fascia and air-intake grilles and are available with and without side skirts.

For a while there, the future of the Hitman franchise was up in the air, following Square Enix's move to sell developer IO Interactive. After a year of relative silence, recent rumors turned out to be true as Warner Bros. announced Hitman 2 shortly before E3. The game won't be episodic this time around, but will feature six levels at launch, including an F1 racetrack set in Miami seen in the trailer. At least two post-launch DLCs are planned and available through limited edition SKUs. Folks who pre-order the game get immediate access to Hitman: Sniper Assassin mode, not to be confused with Hitman: Sniper for mobile. Just like an assassin to keep you confused.

Samsung X5 NVMe TB3 SSD: Bleeding Edge External Storage Samsung has been a leader in the solid state storage market for a number of years. Whether you were looking for affordable SATA-based offerings or high-performance NVMe gumsticks, Samsung usually has an answer. And we’re not just talking about internal drives either; Samsung has also released a number of excellent external storage devices, like the T3 and last year’s T5, for example. What Samsung hasn’t had was an ultra-high speed external solid state device that shed the limitations of legacy interfaces – until today, that is. Samsung’s latest storage product, the X5 Thunderbolt Portable SSD, is a durable, attractive, external device packing an NVMe solid state drive and burly Thunderbolt 3 interface. We’ve got the Samsung X5 Thunderbolt 3 Portable SSD’s full spec and feature highlights detailed below and will dive into its performance on the pages ahead. If you’re in need of some ultra high-speed, portable storage, you’ll want to check this new Samsung Storage product out... The Samsung X5 Thunderbolt 3 Portable SSD features a full metal body that feels very sturdy and durable in the hand. The top cover has a gunmetal metallic finish, while the bottom and a small side section near the connector has a bright red, non-slip finish. There is a single Thunderbolt 3 / USB-Type C port on the front edge, flanked by a tiny activity LED to the right and a Thunderbolt logo on the left. All told, the Samsung X5 weighs in at about 5.3oz, or 150g and measures 19.7mm high, 119m long, and 62 mm wide. The enclosure has curved edges all around and definitely has a premium look and feel. Samsung did not skimp on the build quality of this enclosure in the least. The chassis is also designed to efficiently dissipate heat to ensure the SSD inside doesn’t throttle, and it’s somewhat shock resistant as well. The Samsung X5 is designed to withstand drops of up to 2 meters, or 6.6 feet - or maximum human fumble height, if you will. nside the X5’s enclosure is an NVMe M.2 SSD, and Thunderbolt 3 interface board. The SSD is in the same class as the Samsung SSD 970 EVO and features the same 64-layer V-NAND and Phoenix controller. The M.2 SSD is installed in an interface built around the Intel Alpine Ridge DSL6340 Thunderbolt 3 controller and drives will be offered in capacities of 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB -- we've got a 1TB drive here for test and review. Altogether, the Samsung X5 is rated for transfer speeds in the neighborhood of 2.8GB/s (reads) and 2.3GB/s (writes). The Samsung X5 Thunderbolt 3 Portable SSD also supports full AES 256-bit hardware encryption and includes the necessary software to enable it for both Windows and Mac right on the drive. Install the software, set your password and the drive’s contents can be encrypted, with minimal performance impact, to keep out prying eyes and secure your data. The Samsung X5 also comes with a 3 year warranty, which is pretty good considering the portable nature of the device, and it includes a basic lit pack and short Thunderbolt cable. The cable is a little too short for use on many desktop systems, but is fine if the X5 is going to rest next to a notebook.

Google has unveiled a new virtual reality (VR) immersive experience based on a novel system that captures and renders high-quality, realistic images from the real world using light fields. Created by a team of leading researchers at Google, Welcome to Light Fields is the tech giant's splash into the nascent arena of light fields VR experiences, an exciting corner of VR video technology gaining traction for its promise to deliver extremely high-quality imagery and experiences in the virtual world. Google released Welcome to Light Fields earlier this year as a free app on Steam VR for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. The creators will demonstrate the VR experience at SIGGRAPH 2018, in the Immersive Pavilion, a new space for this year's conference. The Pavilion is devoted exclusively to virtual, augmented, and mixed reality and will contain: the Vrcade, a space for VR, AR, and MR games or experiences; the VR Theater, a storytelling extravaganza that is part of the Computer Animation Festival; and the well-known Village, for showcasing large-scale projects. SIGGRAPH 2018, held 12-16 August in Vancouver, British Columbia, is an annual gathering that showcases the world's leading professionals, academics, and creative minds at the forefront of computer graphics and interactive techniques. Destinations in Welcome to Light Fields include NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery, delivering to viewers an astronaut's view inside the flight deck, which has never been open to the public; the pristine teak and mahogany interiors of the Gamble House, an architectural treasure in Pasadena, CA; and the glorious St. Stephen's Church in Granada Hills, CA, home to a stunning wall of more than 14,000 pieces of glimmering stained glass. "I love that light fields in VR can teleport you to exotic places in the real world, and truly make you believe you are there," says Ryan Overbeck, software engineer at Google who co-led the project. "To me, this is magic." To bring this experience to life, Overbeck worked with a team that included Paul Debevec, senior staff engineer at Google, who managed the project and led the hardware piece with engineers Xueming Yu, Jay Busch, and Graham Fyffe. With Overbeck, Daniel Erickson and Daniel Evangelakos focused on the software end. The researchers designed a comprehensive system for capturing and rendering high-quality, spherical light field still images from footage captured in the real world. They developed two easy-to-use light field camera rigs, based on the GoPro Hero4action sports camera, that efficiently capture thousands of images on the surface of a sphere. Those images were then passed through a cloud-based light-field-processing pipeline. Among other things, explains Overbeck, "The processing pipeline uses computer vision to place the images in 3-D and generate depth maps, and we use a modified version of our vp9 video codec [video formatting] to compress the light field data down to a manageable size." To render a light field dataset, he notes, the team used a rendering algorithm that blends between the thousands of light field images in real-time. The team relied on Google's talented pool of engineers in computer vision, graphics, video compression, and machine learning to overcome the unique challenges posed in light fields technology. They also collaborated closely with the WebM team (who make the vp9 video codec) to develop the high-quality light field compression format incorporated into their system, and leaned heavily on the expertise of the Jump VR team to help pose the images and generate depth maps. (Jump is Google's professional VR system for achieving 3-D-360 video production at scale.) Indeed, with Welcome to Light Fields, the Google team is demonstrating the potential and promise of light field VR technology, showcasing the technology's ability to provide a truly immersive experience with a level of unmatched realism. Though light fields technology has been researched and explored in computer graphics for more than 30 years, practical systems for actually delivering high-quality light field experiences has not yet been possible. Part of the team's motivation behind creating this VR light field experience is to invigorate the nascent field. "Welcome to Light Fields proves that it is now possible to make a compelling light field VR viewer that runs on consumer-grade hardware, and we hope that this knowledge will encourage others to get involved with building light field technology and media," says Overbeck. "We understand that in order to eventually make compelling consumer products based on light fields, we need a thriving light field ecosystem. We need open light field codecs, we need artists creating beautiful light field imagery, and we need people using VR in order to engage with light fields."

Five people have been charged in the French capital Paris with murdering a Peruvian transgender prostitute who reportedly tried to defend her client when robbers attacked his car. Vanesa Campos, 36, was shot dead on the night of 16-17 August in the Bois de Boulogne, a city park long known as a pick-up area for prostitutes. Her brutal murder sparked anger among sex workers and LGBT activists. Hundreds marched on Friday to demand greater protection for prostitutes. Campaigners demanded the repeal of a 2016 law which criminalised the purchase of sex in France, saying it forced prostitutes to work in more isolated locations to avoid police. How did she die? Working illegally in France for the past two years, French media say, Ms Campos was with a client in a part of the park used by prostitutes. About 10 men armed with knives, sticks and a handgun set upon her after she tried to stop them robbing his car, a police source was quoted as saying by Le Parisien newspaper. Ms Campos reportedly shouted for help but her friends arrived too late to save her. She was killed by a bullet to the chest. It was not known if the client was also hurt in the incident. Eight people were arrested last week and five have now been charged with murder and robbery, AFP news agency reports. What do campaigners want? The protesters who turned out on Friday carried placards demanding "Justice for Vanesa" but also accusing the French state of "complicity" in the murder of a transgender woman by driving prostitutes to take greater risks with their safety. "The law is 100% responsible for Vanesa's death," campaigner Giovanna Rincon told AFP. Around 10 prostitutes have been murdered in the Bois de Boulogne in recent years, Le Parisien reports. Supporters of the 2016 law argued it increases safety by improving police protection for sex workers and helping foreign prostitutes to get temporary residence permits in France if they agreed to seek jobs outside prostitution.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9: A Fully Loaded Android Flagship If we were to characterize a Samsung Galaxy Note user in a single word it would have to be "enthusiast." Specifically, we're talking about an Android smartphone enthusiast but regardless, among the vast general populous of smartphone consumers, if you're packing a device like any of the previous Samsung Galaxy Notes, you likely want the most powerful, feature-rich, large format device you can get your hands on. And when it came to the 9th incarnation of the Galaxy Note, the Galaxy Note 9, Samsung spared no expense once again, not only in its design and feature set, but even the venue it chose to launch from last week at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Brooklyn Nets play here, as well as the New York Islanders. And yes, now Samsung Vice Chairman and CEO Dong-Jin Koh, or DJ for short, has played there too. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is here. It's big, bold, powerful, pricey, wields an S Pen and makes no apologies for its [CENSORED]ceous and bodacious exterior. Is it a worthy successor in one of Samsung's most successful flagship product lines? We'll try to answer that question here, but as it turns out, the new Note 9 is more about evolutionary refinement, than it is revolutionary new features. And that, as you'll see, is likely just fine for most Android phone enthusiasts. First, take a quick guided tour with Aaron from Samsung here at their suite in New York, then we'll dig in deep on all the specifics, user experience, and performance metrics.

If you wait long enough, what's old becomes new again, to a new generation. We see this not only in fashion, but also technology—just look at the success of Nintendo's NES Classic and SNES Classic Edition game consoles. Mercedes-Benz is going back even further, though. Some 81 years after introducing its W 125 hit the racetrack, the automaker is paying homage to its sleek design with a new electric vehicle concept. Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new Vision EQ Silver Arrow show car during Monterey Car Week, which is an event for car aficionados and collectors from all over the world. The Vision EQ Silver Arrow is a one-seater vehicle designed in the same general shape as its record breaking W 125 car from 1937. It sports a similar aerodynamic construction and alubeam silver paint reminiscent of the history Silver Arrows from yesteryear. Over 80 years ago, the historic Silver Arrows demonstrated that Mercedes-Benz was a pioneer when it came to speed thanks, among other things, to their streamlined shape," says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Daimler AG. "The Vision EQ Silver Arrow draws on that legacy. Intended for acceleration and driving pleasure, it embodies progressive luxury and provides an insight into the future of our design. As a result, the show car drives the design idiom of our new EQ product and technology brand to the top." For weight reasons, the W 125 did not have a white paint layer—Mercedes-Benz took it off, exposing the aluminum body. This time around, Mercedes-Benz said its new Vision EQ Silver Arrow concept features multiple layers of paintwork in alubeam silver, which appears as liquid metal over the top. The car's body structure is made of carbon fiber. Same goes for the functional attachment parts, such as the front splitter. Inside the vehicle, the driver's cockpit can be folded forward to provide a wider view of the interior. It contains a mix of "traditional, high quality materials" such as saddle brown genuine leather on the seat and steering wheel, and modern high tech solutions such as the large projection surface. "The sitting surface and backrest have an unusual pattern which is aligned with the seat contour: Stars have been stitched in with the help of laser engraving. AIRSCARF neck-level heating is integrated into the seat. A four-point seatbelt inspired by motorsport holds the driver securely in place. The pedals can be adapted to the driver's specific stature, with a controller located on the seat for adjusting the pedals," Mercedes-Benz says. Quiet but fierce, the soundless Vision EQ Silver Arrow has an output of 550 kW (750 horsepower). It also boasts a thin rechargeable battery in the underbody with a usable capacity of around 80 kWh for a range of over 400 km (around 248 miles). It's a dual electric motor system, with one on the front axle and another at the rear. Going electric is a stark contrast from the 12-cylinder engine found in the W 125 from 1937. Performance, however, shouldn't leave any car aficionados wanting.

It is back to school season and many new students are stepping onto college campuses for the first time. Social media may be one way to ease the difficulty of making friends or finding a study buddy. Instagram just introduced their college community feature to help bring together students on the same campus. Users will be prompted to select their university and graduating year and add the information to their profile. The student will then have access to a list of classmates who have also agreed to publish their university information on their profile. Students will be able to message and watch each other’s Instagram stories. They can also still ignore or block messages they do not want to receive. Some users have already encountered issues with Instagram’s latest feature. One user was prompted to register for a college community even though they are not an active student. This feature could also potentially leave out graduate-level students who do not necessarily have a designated graduation year. It is currently unclear whether users will be able to change their graduation date and maintain their “active” status. Instagram’s announcement comes on the heels of the release of Tinder U. Tinder U is a feature that allows college students to look for romantic dates, friends, or study buddies on their own or nearby college campuses. Both Instagram and Tinder’s target audiences are “Millennials” and “Generation Z”, who tend to favor these apps over other standby's like Facebook. There have been many changes to Instagram this past year. In the spring, Instagram added in-app payments for partners such as Resy, an app for making dinner reservations. Users are able to register a debit or credit card and create security PIN’s. The features does not seem to be available to all users and does not include app partners like Warby Parker of Kate Spade Instagram has also altered some features that have prompted concerns over privacy. This past June, Instagram took away the tool that alerted users when someone took a screenshot of their stories. The app then added status dots that let users know when their friends were online. Thankfully, Instagram allows users to turn off this feature under the “Activity Status” setting. Instagram’s college community feature is still being tested and does not have a full release date. Hopefully the feature will help students to be able to connect with each other during a very formative time.

Dutch police investigating the disappearance and death of schoolboy Nicky Verstappen in 1998 say their prime suspect has been arrested in Spain. Jos Brech was identified as a suspect after the Netherlands' biggest ever DNA harvesting operation, which included his relatives. It gave police a vital clue linking him to DNA on Nicky Verstappen's clothes. Extradition proceedings for the former scout master are under way. "Jos B, 55, a suspect in the death of Nicky Verstappen was arrested in Spain on Sunday afternoon. He was taken into custody and will be handed over to the Netherlands," said a statement from police in Limburg, the southern Dutch province where the boy disappeared. The arrest follows a public appeal last week, during which detectives shared photographs of the suspect. A Dutchman living in Spain recognised the man in the photos and sent a tip-off to police. Nicky, then aged 11, was at a summer camp in August 1998 when he vanished from his tent. His body was discovered in the forest the following day. Jos Brech, who lived nearby, was reported missing earlier this year, following the largest DNA testing project ever in the Netherlands. One of the only pieces of evidence in the case was foreign DNA discovered on Nicky's clothing. More than 14,000 men voluntarily gave DNA samples to the investigation - none of whom were suspects. But by comparing the samples, it could be determined if a relative of the donor was a match, narrowing the search. A killing that shocked the Netherlands This murder mystery has horrified and captivated the Dutch for two decades. Nicky Verstappen, the freckle-faced schoolboy, was adopted as a symbol of an unfathomable, faceless threat to our children. Now the prime suspect in his murder is in custody in Spain, and a European arrest warrant issued last week is expected to facilitate his return to the country where the grotesque crime was committed. The Netherlands is buzzing with a desire for justice, and in some cases revenge. If Jos Brech denies the charges, the challenge for prosecutors will be to ensure emotion does not affect the suspect's right to a fair hearing in court. Mr Brech did not participate in the call for voluntary DNA samples. He was recorded as having passed the scene of the crime back in 1998, walking by a few days later shortly after midnight. He was stopped by police and later interviewed, but had been thought to be an innocent passer-by. He had travelled to the Vosges area of eastern France last autumn and was reported missing by his family in April. He was known to be a expert in bushcraft, capable of staying in wilderness areas for long periods of time. After he was reported missing, police examining his home discovered he was a 100% match for the DNA found on Nicky's body. Nicky Verstappen's mother Berthie told Dutch TV on Sunday night said the family did not dare believe that the arrest would come so soon after the police appeal on 22 August. "We hope there'll be quick answers now to all the questions we have," she said. Spanish police were tipped off by a 48-year-old Dutchman who said he had seen him in the village of Castelltercol, an hour's drive north of Barcelona, and spoken to him in July. "He'd been living in a tent in the woods, close to a house that several people have visited for years. It's a sort of commune where I had lived for ages too," the man told the Telegraaf newspaper. A leading defence lawyer said he was prepared to take on the case on Jos Brech's behalf as there were traces of DNA from other people on the body as well.

The Apple Watch has long been a successful fitness and health accessory, monitoring activity and encouraging users. It's due a refresh next month when, by all accounts, Apple Watch Series 4 will be released with a bigger display and better battery life. A recent registration from Apple shows multiple Apple Watch models are on their way. But now, as reported by Fast Company, Google has redesigned its Wear OS app on iPhone and Google Fit app on Android, with a look that seems strangely reminiscent of Apple's Activity app. It's almost like there's a new piece of hardware coming. Like, you know, a Google Pixel Watch, perhaps? The Apple Activity app, you may know, has three concentric rings. The outer ring is red and crawls round the dial as you burn calories. The middle, green ring, measures brisk exercise (clock up 30 minutes and the ring is complete) and the inner ring counts how many hours you've been active, which involves not sitting down for the entire 60 minutes. Completing these rings can become addictive, so it's no surprise another company might want some of that healthy, fitness-oriented action. So, now, Google Fit has a metric with two rings. The first ring closes based on what Google calls Move Minutes, which are based on it being important to move more and sit less. It encourages you to take the stairs instead of the elevator, for instance. The second uses Heart Points, which Google says are "activities that get your heart pumping harder" and you'll earn a Heart Point for a minute of moderately intense activity, like walking the dog more quickly. Though if you try this with my dog, be warned, she will only comply is she's in the mood. Otherwise, you'll have to slow down again. If these circular entreaties to fitness sound familiar, it's true they are very like the Apple Activity app. But Google has a twist. Though the concentric circles use two of the same colors as Apple does, green and blue, not only are they different shades of these hues, but as they complete they, presto-change-o, turn into octagons. Oh my, that's different. As with Apple, Google offers hints when you need to do a bit more exercise to reach a goal, though Google seems to manage these things on a weekly basis, while Apple, for now at least, focuses most on the daily achievements. Google still counts steps and calories burnt, but it sees this presentation as the most inviting for its users, it seems. The most important point here, I'd say, is that there's a recognition of the importance of healthy living and the small but influential role a smartwatch can play in this. Of course, you need the right hardwar to make this happen and these new apps seem to me a further indication that Google is preparing a Pixel Watch for release alongside the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones later this fall.
