  6. In a time where old standards are being questioned, the opportunity to forge new paths is opening up. There is a shift towards a more sustainable lifestyle, and the demand for meaningful and long lasting products is rising. While the earth is recovering during these times of limited travel, the awareness for the necessity of e-mobility is more present than ever. Soel Yachts, a Dutch based company, is redefining the way we travel on the water by setting the benchmark for highly efficient solar electric boats. In 2017 Soel Yachts launched the first SoelCat 12 at the Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort & Spa, where the solar electric catamaran takes up to 12 guests on lush lagoon and sunset cruises. Entirely silent and sustainable with no carbon pollution, this not only preserves the pristine Tahitian waters, but also creates a sense of elevated tranquillity. The prestigious resort, which is currently undergoing a transformation to introduce new luxurious and modern standards, has now decided to offer sustainability on all levels by switching their entire fleet to solar electric boats. “With the current movement of more sustainable thinking and the environmental impact on the whole world, fossil fuel free transport has become indispensable. In the past two years of successful operations with the SoelCat 12, we have seen that our reputation among the guests has increased significantly due to the growing sustainability movement. Preserving coral reefs and improving the quality of the air matters a lot, especially when on holiday.” explains Romain Vidal, General Manager of the FHP Hotel Group. Currently the first two solar electric ferries of the newly developed Soel Shuttle 14 type are under construction for the Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort. The comfortable layout offers space for up to 24 passengers and their luggage, and can be customized to client wishes. A VIP version for exceptional private tours is also on the drawing board. With an installed battery capacity of 106 kWh and 80 kW of motor power from Naval DC the Soel Shuttle 14 is set up for speeds up to 14 knots. “Our clients want to be autonomous and no longer rely on the availability of diesel and petrol, while still approaching the performance of conventional powered boats. Solar electric boats present the perfect alternative with low running costs and quick return of investment.” explains Linda Brembs, Managing Partner at Soel Yachts. Solar Impulse Efficient Solution All of these features and benefits were taken into account when this year the World Alliance Members of the Solar Impulse Foundation selected Soel Yachts’ solar electric boats as an ‘Efficient Solution’, passing a rigorous evaluation by a team of worldwide experts in the environment, technology and business management. The solution must match the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and is judged according to three criteria: feasibility, environmental impact, and profitability for the owner. The ‘Solar Impulse Efficient Solution’ label seeks to bridge the gap between ecology and economy, bringing together environmental protection and financial viability. It demonstrates that these solutions are not expensive fixes to problems, but rather opportunities for clean economic growth. Bertrand Piccard, Initiator and Chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation explains: “Each time I speak of protecting the environment to heads of state or government officials, they tell me that it is too expensive. This label is a strong message to them: solutions exist, and represent the biggest market opportunity of our century. An opportunity which cannot be missed.” After numerous discussions and meetings with private boat owners, island states and governments, Soel Yachts understands the needs around passenger transport and translates this into sustainable solutions for both commercial and private operators. The hull designs of the solar electric boats are optimized for maximum efficiency and the need to provide reliable running hours. “Build quality, system reliability, performance and durability are top priorities for us. We believe our ability to deliver an unforgettable experience with excellent economy per trip, truly sets our boats apart.” says Joep Koster, Co-founder of Soel Yachts. Whether providing green transportation to destinations like Bora Bora, Miami, Sydney or Toronto, or getting people closer to nature: Soel Yachts’ provides an answer for a meaningful experience with long lasting impact.
  7. Social distancing has become the new normal in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. It is what most of us are trying to follow to keep ourselves safe from the virus. In turn, it has left people with disabilities feeling even more vulnerable now that they are unsure if others would want to assist them. With Unlock 1.0 being announced, most caretakers or attendants for persons with disabilities have been able to return to work and help with their regular needs. For the disabled, however, the pandemic has posed another obstacle when it comes to stepping out of their homes. Disability activist Nipun Malhotra, who was born with arthrogryposis, a rare congenital contracture, told indianexpress.com, “I am also on the wheelchair and for many of us, there is this fear that if we go out on the roads, there will be nobody to assist.” Vineet Saraivala, who is visually impaired, believes that for the blind, the lockdown is not yet over. “People like me do not drive personal vehicles so they are completely dependent on public transport or cab services, which is not a safe option at the moment, and has also been halted in many places. People with blindness are highly dependent on others to assist them, especially in a public place but that is also affected now because of social distancing,” he said. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently said in a video message that about one billion people with disabilities have been hit hard by coronavirus, further intensifying the inequalities they have already been grappling with. “Our lives were already tough but the pandemic has only added to the challenges,” Vineet agreed. Social distancing has posed new challenges for the disabled now that people would be hesitant to assist them. (Source: getty images) The risk of exposure to the virus has motivated people to shift to contactless delivery which means a lot of the purchase, from groceries to medicines, has moved online. But the mobile apps that we regularly use for this purpose are unfortunately not disabled-friendly. “These mobile apps are not accessible to us, including Aarogya Setu app, although we are expected to have it on our phones,” Vineet pointed out. If orders cannot be placed online, one has to go to a store. “But even there, the people around would be more hesitant to help us because there is touch involved. Personally, I am not so bold enough to try this immediately,” he added.
  8. during the coronavirus lockdown is key to keeping youths hopeful and busy, and sustaining their mental health, say observers. "Developed countries around the globe have introduced online learning in their education setups to apprise students about new developments and improve their innate capabilities to 'search and seek' in their respective fields," said Anas Takreem Kakakhel, an education analyst and general secretary of the Private Education Network Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. "Countries like the United Kingdom, the United States, China and Australia have already included online techniques of learning in their educational system, owing to its countless benefits," he said. "Online learning and remote classes are the only options available in the crisis-like situation that has arisen after the spread of the coronavirus in the country," he added. Keeping youth busy "The most vulnerable segment is our young generation, which is confined to its homes," Kakakhel said. "Its educational process has been severed. Online education will keep it busy and prevent it from being part of any venture that is unwanted and detrimental to society." "Online classes cannot replace classrooms, but the new system is a praiseworthy step to save the future of students," he added. The government should consider developing internet availability in remote areas, according to Kakakhel, adding that students living in the newly merged tribal areas should be given priority. Online learning will make students aware of socially connective technologies that will help them to pursue studies, said Basar Ali, a lecturer at the Media and Communication Studies Department of Khushal Khan Khattak University in Karak District. Futures 'in jeopardy' "The po[CENSORED]rity of social technologies has influenced many educational institutions like Allama Iqbal Open University and the Virtual University [of Pakistan]," he said. "The ever-increasing enrolment of students in these universities is itself proof of the success of online systems that now have been introduced to students in the looming educational crisis emanating from the coronavirus," said Ali. "Higher education institutions should develop online learning and management systems like Allama Iqbal Open University," he said. "Otherwise, it will be very difficult to achieve the targeted goal of students' involvement in distance learning." "Tens of thousands of students, whose futures are in jeopardy due to the coronavirus, should be brought online as soon as possible," he added. A safety valve Dwindling hope and increasing levels of uncertainty are some of the factors that encourage frustration, depression and mental instability among the young generation, he said, adding that such factors exponentially increase the chances of students becoming involved in undesirable activities like violence and extremism. "We appreciate the efforts of the government to restore the already fragile education system, as well as its plans to save the future of students and give them a path to avoid radicalisation and anti-social activities," said Ali. "Most parents are worried about the future prospects of their children, who have been confined to their homes by current movement restrictions and by closure of educational institutions," said Ehsan Ullah Shah, a teacher at the Government Higher Secondary School Paharipura Peshawar and focal person of the Sports Directorate of KP Elementary and Secondary Education. "They fear the growth of harmful tendencies in their children's minds." "The younger generation must be part of positive activities; otherwise, the probability of its involvement in unwanted activities like violence, extremism, and in some cases militancy, will increase," he said. "The main reasons ... are depression, frustration, uncertainty and mental distress." "Online education will involve students in their routine activities and will serve as a safety valve for the negative impacts on their minds in this crisis," he said.

  18. Curious children ask a staggering 73 questions every day ... half of which parents struggle to answer, according to a study. Researchers found amid the bombardment of who, why, what, when, where and how many parents end up turning to Google for answers, or making one up on the spot. The study also revealed children’s inquisitive nature peaks at four-years-old for both boys and girls, to the despair of mothers, fathers and carers. Kids from the capital proved the most inquisitive, as Londoners admitted their children ask an average of 93 questions each day – almost four questions every waking hour. To help parents deal with some of their children’s more challenging questions, Tots Town at Argos has teamed up with child psychologist Dr. Sam Wass - and creating a series of videos that address these topics with the help of Tots Town; a range of playsets that helps with developmental play. “As children grow up it’s natural to be curious about the world around them. As parents it’s easy to forget just how much of our children’s knowledge comes from what we tell them. But it can be tough to address the trickier topics - such as money and bedtime,” Dr. Wass said. “Using educational and visual aids such as toys can help to soften the difficulty of broaching trickier subjects. Expressing complex thoughts and ideas through familiar items can often help children’s understanding.” Jackie Donnelly, Brand Manager, Tots Town at Argos, added: “Toys allow children to grow their imagination and play an important part in childhood development. Tots Town playsets are perfect for educational play and are a fantastic means for children to learn and grow in a creative and fun way.” Chad Valley Tots Town has launched three videos, each one using role play to explain questions parents find most challenging. Questions include ‘What does ‘we can’t afford it’ mean?’ ‘Why can’t I stay up as late as you?’ and ‘Why do I have to go to school?’ While a curious mind may be the obvious culprit for relentless questions, half of parents noticed the questions increase when their child overhears adult conversations. A respective 46 per cent attributed it to other children, and their children’s wild imaginations. Parent’s top 10 most challenging questions include: 1. Why do people die? 2. Where did I come from? 3. What is God? 4. How was I made? 5. What does “we can’t afford it” mean? 6. Is Father Christmas Real? 7. Why do I have to go to school? 8. When you die who will I live with? 9. Why is the sky blue? 10. Why can’t I stay up as late as you? Available exclusively at Argos, the Chad Valley Tots Town range has been designed with educational play in mind, aimed at 18 months-3-year-olds.
  19. ISLAMABAD: If official statistics are to be believed, the number of deaths in first five months of this year have been lower than the corresponding period of the previous year, a calculation that raises question about the integrity of data in a country where there is no proper system to keep the death count. At a time when coronavirus has affected many areas, the news of low death rate is greeted with skepticism and the officials have their own explanations but they are not plausible enough to answer relevant questions. The News spoke with officials in all provinces to inquire about the data, if there is any. In Sindh, Karachi did an exercise of data collection after a report by M. Waqar Bhatti in The News on April 15 revealed rising number of deaths of patients upon arrival at hospitals. In Punjab, officials claim to have collected figures from all districts from January to May and they have drawn a comparison with the corresponding period of 2019. No such effort has been made in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa whereas Balochistan did collection to some extent. Regarding Karachi, the data first came to public view when Governor Sindh Imran Ismail tweeted it on May 7 apparently in an attempt to downplay the virus threat. That was from February to April. This data had reported about deaths under different categories, say, those occurred in hospitals were reported separately from homicide killings, road accidents and due to coronavirus. Information collected from graveyards was also incorporated. In all cases, decrease in deaths was reported drawing a comparison between the deaths in February 2020 with deaths in February 2019 and so on. There was only one exception: deaths due to road accidents registered an increase from 13 in February 2019 to 24 in 2020. There was no lockdown then therefore deaths in road accidents are understandable. The News spoke to different officials in Karachi asking them relevant questions for determining the veracity of data but couldn’t find single official who would claim to be in complete picture. The city administration referred to the Citizens Police Liaison Committee. A spokesperson of CPLC said they had only shared data related to deaths in road accidents and homicides. Who collected from the graveyard remains unexplored. A leading politician from Sindh government was caught by disbelief after going through data. “Many graveyards of Karachi are full to the capacity and further burial is banned nevertheless it is done with the connivance of grave diggers. Keeping record of those burials means for grave diggers preparing a charge sheet against them,” he said. Although Edhi Foundation claims that number of deaths have increased, they don’t have data to back that either. When checked with Edhi Foundation, its spokesman said that they receive more calls than before from people wanting help in wash of dead bodies and burial. Asked about the data to determine the difference with the corresponding period of previous years, The News was told that data cleaning was in progress and would soon be shared. It has not been done after the passage of a week. In Punjab, officials say they have collected details from all graveyards in each district to determine the number of dead buried there. In Lahore, for examples, there are 274 (defunct) union councils and 906 graveyards, according to official figures. The number of death from January to May 2020 has been shown lower than the corresponding period in previous year. In cases, difference is too high to believe. In May this year, 1748 deaths have been recorded by graveyards in the entire Lahore compared with 5015 in May last year. In contrast, there was not much difference in the figures of January 2020 (2557 deaths) and the January last year (2595 deaths). Same is in the case of February. The reasons described is that since there was no lockdown in those months, there would have been more road accidents, main cause of death. Asked if there is any system of keeping record of deaths in Punjab, the answer was in negative. Then how did they gather not only this year’s statistics but of also corresponding period in the previous year? An official said the grave diggers are supposed to maintain register and that was the source of information. The News checked from different sources and came to know that there is no institutionalized system in place at graveyard level. People tend to report death at union council level only when inevitable, say, when it is required for property transfer etc. The News also checked from other districts and found out there is no cumulative figure available, regardless the authenticity. A commissioner, for example, shared the data of his division. It was a kind of sample representation at best. Details of dead from a couple of graveyards from each district were collected to determine a pattern; not more than that. While KP has not carried out any such exercise, Balochistan has gathered this year’s information. Asked how that was arranged, the spokesman of Balochistan government said this was based on the daily situation report each commissioner get from districts under his/her administration.
  20. Despite a lean season (March-May), beekeepers swear the honey production has grown drastically. As per Vijay Kasana, a beekeeper who has farms in Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Kashmir and other northern states, there is 30-40 per cent increase in honey production. As the world media is flooded with photos of wild animals becoming emboldened during lockdown to stroll at heavily po[CENSORED]ted areas, insects like bees too are having the time of their life. The experts believe the drastic decrease in the air and noise pollution and pesticide-free atmosphere have kept honeybees busier resulting in an increase in honey production. As per the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), which is under the Ministry of MSME, the number of bee colonies and the health of bees has significantly improved which is crucial for ecology and food safety. Vinai Kumar Saxena, Chairman, KVIC, said, “During the lockdown period, the quality of air improved significantly. The abundance of flora in the surrounding and a peaceful environment kept the bees busier and filled up the hives with honey in a quick time. As compared to the usual 15 to 20 kg honey collected in each bee box, the quantity rose significantly to nearly 40 kg per box during the lockdown (March-May).” He further said this trend is seen in almost all honey-producing states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and others. As there was little pollution and almost zero use of pesticides in the crops during this period, the quality of honey also improved as bees collected pesticide-free nectar and pollen from the flowers. Despite a lean season for honey production (mid-March to May), beekeepers swear that they have extracted almost double the amount as compared to previous years. According to Vijay Kasana, a beekeeper who has farms in Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Kashmir and other northern states, there is 30-40 per cent increase in honey production. “As honeybees got a peaceful atmosphere to work, the outcome is a sheer delight. In a bee box, where 7-8 kg is extracted in one go, this time we have taken honey twice,” said he. Since India has different climatic zones, therefore there is a variety of honey cultivated in India. “Indian honey ranks among the best in the world. Our mustard farm honey is exported in the European market while the saffron farm honey is among the most expensive in the world,” said Kasana. The production of honey in India stood at 1.05 lakh metric tonnes in 2017-18 (source: National Bee Board). This year, it is believed to scale up.
  21. Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) has today announced its entry into Extreme E, becoming the second major American team to commit to the pioneering new electric SUV off-road racing series. Founded and helmed by former racer Chip Ganassi, the eponymously-named Chip Ganassi Racing celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Over the past three decades, the team has claimed no fewer than 19 major titles and more than 220 race wins across a wide variety of motorsport disciplines – from INDYCAR to IMSA and NASCAR to the FIA World Endurance Championship – and in partnership with eight different manufacturers. Amongst those standout achievements have been eight victories in the Rolex 24 At Daytona sportscar classic and four Indianapolis 500 successes, alongside triumphs in NASCAR’s Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 as well as legendary endurance contests the 12 Hours of Sebring and Le Mans 24 Hours – making Ganassi the only team owner in history to win all six iconic races. Extreme E will mark the team’s debut in electric motorsport in its 30 years of operation. CGR joins fellow motorsport powerhouse Andretti Autosport as the second American entry in the championship. Between them, the two teams have clinched 12 of the 17 INDYCAR SERIES crowns since 2003 – Ganassi notably going unbeaten between 2008 and 2011 – and now they are set to reignite their famous racing rivalry in an altogether different domain. In 2015 and 2016, CGR also proved its multi-surface capabilities in the Global Rallycross Championship, yielding a brace of victories and nine further podium finishes. That off-road experience will doubtless prove invaluable when it comes to tackling the diverse range of environments set to be encountered in Extreme E, each of which will shine a spotlight upon the impact of climate change and human influences on the planet – while simultaneously raising awareness, driving sustainability and inspiring action. Alejandro Agag, Founder and CEO, Extreme E, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to confirm Chip Ganassi Racing’s participation in Extreme E, marking this hugely successful team’s progression into electric racing. “CGR boasts a tremendous heritage and pedigree in motorsport, achieving consistent success over three decades in some of the toughest single-seater and sportscar series around. Of course, our championship poses a very different kind of challenge, but the team has proven itself to be a winner in every discipline it has contested and clearly possesses the skillset to similarly excel in Extreme E. “And then, of course, there is the competitive edge with Andretti Autosport, who we announced last month – and it will be fascinating to see how that plays out. These two teams have engaged in some truly classic duels over the years, and we look forward to many more to come in the unique environments that Extreme E will visit. “As a leader, Chip Ganassi has never been afraid to innovate and adapt – indeed, he has won awards for his visionary, future-thinking approach – and that is entirely in keeping with the ethos behind our ambitious and groundbreaking new series, which he was very quick to embrace. I am confident that his team will add great value to Extreme E in our drive to propagate the environmental message and engineer long-lasting change through first-class sporting entertainment.” Chip Ganassi, Team Owner, Chip Ganassi Racing, said: “Extreme E is a very different proposition to anything we have done before, but it’s where I think motor racing is headed in the future. When I started our team in 1990, one of the founding principles I built it on was innovation. I’ve always been passionate about pushing the boundaries of what is possible, and Extreme E checks that box for us in a big way. “It represents an opportunity in motor racing to use the latest technologies to attract a new, younger audience to this great sport of ours. Everything about Extreme E is cool, from the car to the race format and the in-built technology. We’re thrilled to join the championship and to play a part in developing the future of our sport.”
