San Francisco-based Watershed Technology recently raised $100m in its Series C, kicking off February with a strong showing for climate tech funding. The infusion values the software company at $1.8bn. The climate tech company helps businesses track their greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts via specific software. Once emission hotspots are identified, Watershed works with clients to mitigate impact. Current customers include Walmart, BlackRock, General Mills, Stripe and Bain Capital. "Exponential climate action happens when companies rally together to build the climate economy," said co-founder Taylor Francis to Yahoo!Finance of the mission of Watershed. Emissions disclosure requirements are quickly becoming the norm around the world. California recently passed legislation requiring companies to disclose Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions starting in 2027, while the EU mandates similar requirements for companies trading on the European stock exchange. Companies must understand how to comply with these new laws to avoid heavy fines and even jail time. Additionally, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee just passed the bipartisan PROVE IT Act, a bill that would task the Department of Energy with discovering the carbon footprint of certain manufacturing products, including cement, fertilizer, iron and plastic produced in the US. The total impact could then be compared with the carbon footprint of similar goods being imported into the country. If the footprint is higher than domestically made materials, a carbon tax would be charged. These legal pressures, combined with a rapid influx of climate-related disasters, demonstrates the connection between Watershed's $100m Series C and the company's long-term value. "Climate business is becoming the business," said co-founder Francis to Bloomberg. And Watershed isn't alone. Companies such as Greenly, Emitwise and Aclima are just some competitors offering carbon accounting and strategy consulting for companies looking to reach net zero. Given the reality of companies and a public push for climate data transparency, Watershed intends to use its Series C funding to expand its solution capacity for corporate climate accountability services, namely emissions measurements and sustainability reporting. Investors in Watershed's latest Series C include Sequoia Capital, Neo, Kleiner Perkins, Greenoaks, Galvanize Climate Solutions and Emerson Collective. https://www.businessgreen.com/news/4172369/california-startup-watershed-raises-usd100m-emissions-tracking-software

In Qualcomm's latest earnings call, CEO Cristiano Amon said the firm was aiming to launch its Snapdragon X Elite CPU alongside the "next version" of Windows, which the CEO expects to arrive in the middle of the year (via Beta News). While this aligns with previous rumors that suggested a June launch date, Amon came short of explicitly naming Windows 12, and the timeline for a mid-2024 launch may not make sense anymore. The launch of Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite and the "next version of Windows" has everything to do with AI, which it will certainly be a major focus for both. Windows 12 is expected to integrate AI-specific features and utilize AI hardware (as do the Meteor Lake and Hawk Point processors), ushering in the era of the AI PC. With rumors already pointing in the direction of a mid-2024 release date, it seems Windows 12 is almost upon us. Considering it's now February, and Microsoft hasn't said a word about Windows 12, a mid-2024 release would imply an announcement must be almost around the corner. With Windows 11, we received an announcement five months before launch, and Windows 10 got its announcement nearly a full year before it came out. Additionally, Microsoft has reportedly moved to a three-year cadence for new Windows versions, and since Windows 11 came out in October of 2021, we should expect Windows 12 late in the year, or even as far out as 2025. But this is the CEO of Qualcomm; Amon is very unlikely to be misinformed. Though he said "version," Amon may be talking about the rumored 24H2 update to Windows 11, which is also expected to deliver many AI updates. Rumors about Windows 12 and the 24H2 update may even refer to the very same software; Zac Bowden of Windows Central reports that this update has been referred to Windows 12 but believes it's likely it will actually turn out as the 24H2 update. https://www.tomshardware.com/software/windows/qualcomm-ceo-says-that-the-next-version-of-windows-is-due-in-mid-2024-place-your-bets-on-windows-11-24h2-or-windows-12

First-person shooters have been around long enough that it’s difficult to come up with ways to meaningfully innovate on the formula. Fortunately, there’s Deathloop, which happens to be our favorite game of 2021. You start on a desolate beach as Colt Vahn, vaguely remembering that you’re the head of security for a mysterious North Atlantic island that’s been converted into an eternal playground for the ultra-rich, thanks to a time loop machine that resets time every day and ensures nobody suffers consequences for anything. That doesn’t sit well with Colt, which means it’s up to you to take out the eight ‘Visionaries’ who keep the loop intact, including the mysterious Julianna, who toys with Vahn over the radio as you uncover the secrets of the island and plan your perfect day. Defeating each Visionary rewards you with a Deathloop slab, a special ability that can be utilized to turn Cole into a real problem for the people on the island. It’s Groundhog Day with guns, set in an alternative ’60s full of the chaos that characterized the decade. Experimental Bauhaus art, a scorching funk soundtrack, a set of Dishonored-style special abilities, and massive guns you can dual-wield make Deathloop a terrific shooter. It doesn’t stop there, though: to line things up so that every Visionary can be taken out in a single day, you’ll have to explore, solve puzzles, and plan carefully – or you can decide to screw up someone else’s run by invading their game as Julianna. Deathloop is fast-paced and dazzling from beginning to end, and it doesn’t overstay its welcome – while you can invade other players’ games as Julianna until the end of time, the Deathloop campaign wraps up in around 30 hours – and that’s time well spent. If you’re jumping into the campaign for the first time or you need a refresher, check out our Deathloop safe codes and Deathloop glowing items guides. Investors are all but certain they know what to expect out of Egypt’s barely-contested election: President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi will win again, and then soon be forced to oversee a painful devaluation of the currency. As voters head to the polls in the world’s most-populous Arab nation, money managers are already bracing for what comes next. Egypt’s ailing economy has been propped up by tens of billions of dollars in aid from the International Monetary Fund and wealthy neighbors in the Gulf Cooperation Council. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-12-11/sisi-s-post-election-moves-critical-for-egypt-s-troubled-markets

Rabat - A group of animal welfare organizations in Morocco issued on Tuesday a joint press release to condemn the poor treatment of stray animals across the country. The associations decried the lack of action to humanely deal with the situation of stray animals despite King Mohammed VI’s instructions. “Despite the High Instructions from his Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, and the Framework Convention signed in 2019, under the aegis of the Ministry of Interior, the TNVR program (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release to their initial environment) to put an end to diseases such as rabies and other zoonoses, has still not been put into practice,” the statement said. The lack of measures to properly implement the program’s recommendations has contributed to the “brutal and inhumane operations of capturing and culling animals,” the collective added. The collective’s appeal comes in response to shocking and heartbreaking reports of the mistreatment and cruel killing of stray animals in the North African country. Recently, a series of videos online showed men with rifles shooting stray dogs. Other recent videos also showed locked up and abandoned dogs left to die in a shelter near Rabat with no food or water. Many similar footage have also documented over the past weeks the inhumane approaches some groups have taken to capture stray animals. Read Also: Video of Abandoned Stray Dogs in Dire Conditions in Shelter Near Rabat Stirs Anger The animals subject to such inhumane treatment include kittens and puppies, despite the fact that some of the stray cats and dogs are vaccinated, sterilized, and identified. Emphasizing Morocco’s appeal to international tourists, the collective argued that similar acts against stray animals gives a “totally degraded and depreciated image of our country in the eyes of those who witness it.” In terms of recommendations, the collective strongly called for the immediate cessation of the capturing and killing of stray animals across Morocco. The collective further demanded the application of TNVR measures, including sterilization, vaccination, and identification of treated dogs and stray animals in line ith recommendations of competent institutions, including the World Health Organization which against brutal acts stray dogs and acts are subject to. The group also called for animal welfare organizations’ integration in the implementation of the TNVR program to ensure transparency. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2023/05/355271/animal-welfare-collective-brutality-against-stray-animals-affects-moroccos-image

Rabat - Last year marked the latest milestone for Morocco’s continuously expanding automotive sector, as the industry dethroned the phosphate business to become the country’s largest exporting industry. The industry’s exports at the end of 2023 totaled a staggering MAD 141.7 billion ($13.9 billion), up from MAD 111.2 billion ($11 billion) a year earlier, marking an impressive 27% year-on-year increase, according to a recent report from the Office d’Exchange (OE), the country’s foreign trade watchdog. The growth in the car industry exports was propelled by the expanding automotive wiring harness industry, which is the assembly of electrical wires, connectors, and other components to create the wiring system within a vehicle. At the end of 2023, the wiring industry’s exports rose by a sweeping 32%, settling at MAD 46.1 billion ($4.5 billion). Likewise, the car construction industry which covers the fabrication and assembly of structural components, body panels, chassis, and other essential parts, grew by an annual rate of 22%, with exports reaching MAD 67.6 billion ($6.7 billion). Meanwhile, the powertrain industry, which manufactures internal vehicular systems, recorded a 25% annual growth rate, with exports exceeding MAD 11.3 billion ($1.1 billion). Since 1957, the automotive sector in Morocco has undergone a transformation from merely assembling vehicles to full-fledged production. In 2021, the country manufactured a total of 403,007 units, of which $8.3 billion worth was exported, with $3.4 billion accounting for finalized vehicle exports. The growth in production led to the creation of about 220,000 jobs in the industry. In addition, a network of more than 230 Tier 1 and 2 suppliers emerged, contributing to a local integration rate of 60%. Thanks to dedicated government policies that paved the way for the creation of massive infrastructure projects and a business-friendly climate, Morocco established itself as a continental leader in the automotive industry. State policies like the Industrial Acceleration Plan 2014–2020, along with the construction of industrial parks and automotive cities like Kenitra and Tangier, have nurtured the automotive ecosystem. Morocco’s integration into the global economy through free trade agreements has further solidified its attractiveness to investors, the 2023 UNCTAD report maintains The country’s engineering research and development capabilities have grown, with Morocco becoming home to Africa’s first automobile testing center. In addition, Stellantis established an auto technical center near Casablanca. Morocco’s ambition is to achieve an annual production of one million cars by 2025 while raising the local integration rate to 80%. As of 2020, it already achieved an annual production capacity of 700,000 vehicles. The government’s strategies aim to enhance local integration, expand industrial activities, upgrade the value chain, facilitate technology transfer, and diversify export markets. Morocco positioned itself as a prominent production hub, attracting various major groups like German Motor Distributors, Renault, Snop, Stellantis Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems, and Yazaki. The country’s automotive industry reached a significant milestone as the focus of manufacturing is shifting toward intricate high-value components, including engine manufacturing, engineering, as well as research and development. The country also produces around 40,000 to 50,000 electric vehicles annually. However, since domestic vehicle registration remains low – recording 175,435 units in 2021– the primary orientation for vehicle assembly is the European market. Renault, for instance, exports the majority of its production despite having the largest assembly plant with a capacity of 400,000 units. The Citroen Ami, produced in the Moroccan city of Kenitra, emerged as Spain’s best-selling vehicle in 2022. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2024/02/360591/moroccos-car-industry-exports-surge-by-27-hit-13-9-billion-in-2023

Egypt plans to increase its exports of petrochemicals and fertilizers to African nations by 10 percent in 2024, Khaled Abul-Makarem, head of the Export Council for Chemical Industries and Fertilizers, said on Monday.Speaking at the third Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) being held 9-15 November, Abul-Makarem emphasized Egypt's commitment to expanding exports. The IATF, with over 1,950 foreign exhibitors, highlights Egypt's growing stature as a reliable gateway to Africa, he noted. The export council hopes to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) to expand exports. Mohamed Majeed, executive-director of the council, further expressed Egypt's commitment to increasing intra-African trade through diverse collaborations with participating countries. Egypt exported $358 million worth of chemicals and fertilizers to Africa in the first quarter of 2023 alone, lagging only behind construction materials in terms of total value of the country’s exports to the continent. Egyptian exports of chemicals and fertilizers soared by 23 percent in 2022 to $8.62 billion from $7.33 billion in 2021, the council revealed in June. Annually, exports of fertilizers jumped by 42 percent to hit $3.38 billion, ranking second among the 2022 exports. Egypt also aims to import various products, production requirements, intermediate chemicals, fertilizers, and plastic industries from African countries. Trade exchange between Egypt and African countries increased by 1.2 percent to $5.82 billion during the first eight months of 2023 from $5.75 billion in the corresponding period in 2022, as per official data. To further bolster the export sector, the Egyptian government has taken noteworthy steps, including the allocation of an additional EGP2 billion ($64.73 million) in August for the sixth phase of the cash repayment initiative, aimed at incentivizing exporters. Moreover, the country has set its sights on an ambitious target of reaching a total annual export value of $100 billion by 2030. Last year, Egyptian annual exports nearly doubled to $21.2 billion from $10.9 billion in 2016, according to the data released by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). By increasing its exports, Egypt aims to support the government's visionary plan to generate a staggering $191 billion in annual revenues by 2026, compared to the current figure of $70 billion. https://english.ahram.org.eg/News/512144.aspx
