  1. The Lionesses have been "itching to begin" their Women's World Cup campaign, says captain Millie Bright as England prepare to face Haiti. The European champions, who will play their Group D opener at Brisbane Stadium on Saturday at 10:30 BST, also face Denmark and China in their pool. England are seeking to win their first Women's World Cup while Haiti are making their debut in the tournament. "Knowing now that we play tomorrow is even more exciting," said Bright. "Everyone has been itching for the tournament to officially begin. We're all raring to go. The girls were all watching the [opening night] games and the excitement levels are really high. "We're just counting down the hours for ourselves." Manager Sarina Wiegman led England on a 30-game unbeaten run before defeat against Australia in April and is aiming to reach a second successive World Cup final having been a beaten finalist with the Netherlands in 2019. "We are here and we have a dream. Of course there is always a chance to win the World Cup and many more countries can win the World Cup I think," she added. "But, of course, we are going to give our everything - starting tomorrow." England, ranked fourth in the world, are one of the tournament favourites but face stiff competition from the United States, who are aiming to become the first nation to win three successive titles. The tournament, hosted by Australia and New Zealand, comes a year after England won their first women's major trophy at the home European Championship. "The pressure is always on England. Everyone expects England to win anyway - that was also the case last year - that's not different now," said Wiegman. The build-up to England's opening game has been dominated by news off the pitch, including Bright's choice of Fifa-sanctioned armbands and player frustration relating to negotiations with the Football Association over performance-related bonuses. There are also notable absentees from the squad, with Euro 2022 captain Leah Williamson, Ballon d'Or runner-up Beth Mead and Chelsea playmaker Fran Kirby all ruled out through injury. There were question marks over defender Bright's fitness following knee surgery in April but Wiegman confirmed she is "absolutely ready to go" against Haiti. "Unfortunately injuries are part of football and we have to move forward," said Bright. "I think we've got an amazing group of players and staff - everyone has stepped up. We're raring to go." 'They have a problem with scoring' Wiegman said England have left "no stone unturned" in their preparation for the game against Haiti, who are ranked 49 places lower in the world ranking. It will be the first time the two teams have faced each other in a competitive fixture after Haiti qualified for their first World Cup. Nicolas Delepine's side will be underdogs against England but the Lionesses' have not scored in their last three games, including a goalless behind-closed-doors World Cup warm-up match with Canada. "England are a good attacking side, but maybe they have a problem with finishing," said Delepine. However Wiegman said "the business of my job is done" and trusts her players to deliver in Saturday's opener despite underwhelming recent performances, including a goalless draw with Portugal. "They know exactly how we want to play, what we want to do. I just hope that now we are ready, we still have some meetings, but the game plan is ready," she told BBC Radio 5 Live. "Our style of play is clear, the tasks are clear and we go out there to hopefully shine. I hope we see a very entertaining England team who wants to attack, are very aware of the qualities of Haiti and play with freedom." https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/66265569
  2. When I tried to renew my van insurance policy with Privilege, the premium had increased from £508 to £989. Privilege said a claim had been made against me last year. In 2022, a car scraped the rear bumper of my van causing minimal damage. I reported the incident to Privilege, but did not make a claim. When I questioned this, Privilege admitted that the other driver had not made a claim either, but said the price hike was because there was a record of an incident. I tried another insurer which said the same and quoted me £850. I now seem to have a mark against my name through no fault of my own. Drivers are damned if they do – and if they don’t. A policy could be invalidated if an incident is not reported to the insurer, even if no claims arise. Yet customers appear to be penalised for doing the right thing. Insurers’ pricing criteria are complex and opaque, and algorithms may conclude that, if you report a scrape, you drive in environments that make incidents more likely. We can’t know, because Privilege, part of the Direct Line Group, won’t say. After I intervened, it told you the 95% premium hike was “in line with our pricing structure”, but that it can’t explain why because of the “commercially sensitive nature of policy pricing”. It did, however, apologise for the delay in confirming there was no claim against you, and paid £75 in goodwill. The Association of British Insurers tells me it’s a commercial decision for individual companies whether or not a reported incident affects premiums. As for the mark against your name, all potential claims are added to the Claims and Underwriting Exchange, a central database consulted by all insurers. Privilege assures me the incident is registered as non-fault, but other insurers may take it into account when pricing a quote. Your best bet is to keep shopping around. 3. A drone attack on an ammunition depot in Crimea has led to civilian evacuations and disrupted transport, Russian authorities have said. Sergei Aksyonov, the Russian-installed governor of occupied Crimea, said Ukraine was behind the attack, without providing evidence. Mr Aksyonov said local residents living within five kilometres of the blast were being evacuated. Rail services across the Kerch bridge have also reportedly been halted. Earlier on Saturday, Russian authorities stopped traffic on the bridge, but then swiftly reopened it to cars. A later update from the Moscow-installed government said road traffic was again halted until further notice. Kerch bridge is hated symbol of Russian occupation Mr Aksyonov said infrastructure facilities in the Krasnogvardeysky district in Crimea were the target. "According to preliminary data, there were no damages or casualties," Mr Aksyonov wrote on a Telegram post. The BBC has not been able to independently verify the attack. The district where the strike was reported is more than 160km (100 miles) from the Kerch bridge. The bridge, often referred to as the Crimea bridge, was opened in 2018 enabling road and rail access between Russia and Crimea - Ukrainian territory annexed by Moscow in 2014. It has become a symbol of Russian occupation and is also an important re-supply route for Russian forces in southern Ukraine. On Monday, a blast on the bridge killed two people and damaged the road but the railway line, which runs parallel to it, was not damaged. Putin vows response after 'terrorist' bridge attack The Kremlin blamed Kyiv for Monday's attack and said Ukraine had carried out a "terrorist" act. Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to retaliate and accused Ukraine of launching a "senseless" and "cruel" attack. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the Crimea bridge is a legitimate target. Speaking on Friday he spoke of the need to "neutralise" the bridge, explaining it was "the route used to feed the war with ammunition and this is being done on a daily basis" and that Kyiv sees it as "an enemy facility". "So, understandably, this is a target for us," Mr Zelensky said, in a video address to the Aspen security conference in the US. Monday's alleged attack was the second major incident on the Kerch bridge in the past year. In October 2022, the bridge was partially closed following a huge explosion. It was fully reopened in February. link:https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-66276788

  6. After the Dutch government announced additional export controls on advanced tools used to make chips on Friday, the Chinese embassy in the Netherlands published an open letter expressing strong opposition to the decision and asking to reverse it. "We call on the Dutch side to bear in mind the larger interest of safeguarding international trade rules and bilateral economic and trade cooperation, immediately correct its wrongdoings," a statement by the embassy reads. At the behest of the US, the Netherlands significantly expanded its list of sanctioned tools this week to include DUV machines, thus limiting China's access. In the past, only access to advanced EUV machines has been limited, so the move to limit more common DUV machines is a significant expansion of the list of machines subject to sanctions. The embassy criticized the move and called it 'an abuse of export control measures' and disruption to free trade and international trade rules. The embassy further highlighted the potential damage to both Chinese and Dutch companies and warned of disruptions to the global supply chain. Furthermore, they accused 'a certain major country' — the U.S. — of mani[CENSORED]ting allies into economic containment against China. The embassy urged the Netherlands to immediately correct these actions, asserting China's commitment to safeguard its rights and cooperate with the Dutch side for the mutual benefit of Sino-Dutch economic and trade relations. The new export rules set by the Netherlands and scheduled to go into effect on September 1, requires ASML, the world's leading maker of lithography scanners, to get an export license to sell its Twinscan NXT:2000i and more advanced scanners to Chinese companies, according to the company. The scanner uses deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography and can produce chips on 7nm and 5 nm class process technologies. The Dutch restrictions against the Chinese semiconductor sector, made in the name of national security, are not as strict as those imposed by the U.S. government last October. These export regulations require export licenses for American tools and technologies that can be used to produce logic chips with non-planar transistors on 14nm/16nm nodes and below, 3D NAND with 128 or more layers, as well as DRAM memory chips of 18nm half-pitch or less. In addition, the rules require American citizens to obtain a license to work for Chinese semiconductor companies. Lithography tools are among the most complex equipment used in chip fabs. ASML is an indisputable leader in this market, and it will take Chinese companies decades to catch up with the Twinscan NXT:2000i. Meanwhile, without access to American tools from companies like Applied Materials, KLA, and Lam Research, it is impossible to produce chips using modern technologies anyway. As a result, the new regulations by the Dutch government are not going to have a drastic effect on China's semiconductor industry, especially keeping in mind the fact that SMIC is the only Chinese company that can make chips on a 14nm-class process technologies and thinner. Nonetheless, the announcement sparked strong opposition from the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/china-wants-netherlands-to-not-ban-exports-of-asml-tools
  7. One of the best co-op games, and one of oh-so-few stealth co-op joints around, Styx: Shards of Darkness, is 85% off (just $2.99) for another couple days. With the Steam Summer Sale not quite closed, it's not too late to toss some pocket change at another couple games. Better yet, talk a friend into playing with you. I routinely cycle back through my whingeing that co-op campaigns just don't exist like they used to and Styx: Shard of Darkness was the answer to my grievances when I picked it up a couple years back. It's a proper stealth romp with large levels to dissect by picking off guards and avoiding combat with darkness and crawl spaces. All you've got to suffer for it are some bottom-shelf scatological jokes from a snarky goblin. If you got burned by the not-stellar creepy little guy stealth in The Lord of The Rings: Gollum, this should be your next port of call. We gave it a nice 79% in our Styx: Shards of Darkness review and despite how easy I find it to recommend it's maintained a shadowy, lesser-known status. You can play it solo if you prefer but it's a grand time in co-op. As Styx and Clone Styx, you and a pal both get to unlock your own tree of skills to specialize in proper soundless stealth, traps, alchemy, and tracking enemies. You can stick close together for some great double kill setups or split up to pave the way for each other by dousing lights or taking down armored guards. It was truly the best bit of whooping and hollering over clinch move moments I've had with a friend in years. https://www.pcgamer.com/my-favorite-co-op-game-in-years-is-on-sale-for-dollar3-in-the-steam-summer-sale/

  16. Unlike the Olympics, Wales sends its own national team to the Commonwealth Games By Anna Palmer BBC Wales politics The Welsh government has ruled out bidding to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. One Tuesday, the Australian state of Victoria scrapped plans to host the games after costs became unmanageable. The Welsh Tories urged ministers to host the games instead, saying the economic benefits would be "immense". But the Welsh government said "budgetary constraints imposed by the UK government" meant it "could not consider" supporting the event. In 2016 the Welsh government decided against bidding to host the 2026 games because of the cost. Ken Skates, who was the economy minister, said it was not feasible after a study revealed it would cost between £1.3bn and £1.5bn. At the time, the Commonwealth Games Federation said it was "surprised" by the figures quoted. Birmingham 2022 Games to cost £778m Seven things you may not know about the Commonwealth Is this the end of the Commonwealth Games? Seven years on, the Victorian government said costs were expected to exceed A$6bn (£3.13bn; $4.09bn). The event was originally estimated to cost around A$2.6bn (£1.4bn; $1.8bn). In response, a UK government spokesperson said the announcement from Victoria was "disappointing for fans and athletes". "We hope that the Commonwealth Games Federation and Commonwealth Games Australia will now work together to find a viable solution to hosting the event in 2026." The Welsh Conservatives' Shadow Minister for Sport Tom Giffard called on the Welsh government to "immediately" start a feasibility study for an "ambitious" Welsh bid. "The news today presents an opportunity for Wales as a sporting nation. Wales considered a bid seven years ago, we would do well to do so again." The Welsh government said it was too focused on delivering the "significant priorities" outlined in its Programme for Government to support the event. The UK government was asked to comment on the Welsh government's remarks. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-politics-66235521
  17. Guwahati: At least seven exotic animals suspected to have been smuggled from Myanmar through Mizoram, were rescued by the Assam Police in Cachar district, officials said on Monday. Four Mizoram natives, identified as Himing Rupina (41), Chuhan Doma (29), Lalrint Luangga (24), Banlal Nigida (30), Jinilal Rut KM (30), were arrested on charges of wildlife trafficking. The caged animals were recovered from a vehicle coming from Mizoram, according to Cachar police officers. “We stopped the car and discovered the cages during the checking at the Lailapur Gate border crossing between Assam and Mizoram on Sunday evening,” Cachar SP Numal Mahatta said, adding that they are looking into the situation. “We believe that exotic animals were smuggled from a neighboring nation and the shipment was intended for another Indian state. To learn further information, we are questioning the people in custody,” he said. After being rescued, the caged animals were handed over to forest rangers, and were moved to the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati. According to Vijay Palve, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Cachar district, all of the animals that were rescued are not native to Asia. “One Panamanian white-faced capuchin, four Black Macaques, and two Common Opossums are among the animals. We sent them to the Assam State Zoo in order to keep them alive because they are not accustomed to the local weather,” Palve added. The majority of the animals that have been rescued, according to the forest officials, are native to Africa, and it is likely that they were smuggled through many nations before they were delivered to Assam. https://telanganatoday.com/seven-exotic-animals-rescued-at-assam-mizoram-border-4-arrested
  18. 2024 is going to be a very busy year for MINI, with the arrival of the hotly anticipated MINI Cooper and third-generation Countryman SUV, along with the reveal of the all-new, all-electric MINI Aceman that we’ve spied out and about in Germany. As a pure-electric crossover, the Aceman will be pitched as a rival to the Hyundai Kona Electric, Volvo EX30, Renault Megane E-Tech, Jeep Avenger and Smart #1, plus the forthcoming Ford Puma EV. It will also fill the void left by the five-door MINI Hatch, sitting between the three-door Cooper and larger Countryman SUV in the MINI range. The Aceman will utilise the same platform as the new MINI Cooper, and is also expected to borrow the pure-electric powertrain options from its smaller sibling. That means the entry-level model Aceman E should use a 40kWh battery for a range of around 200 miles, with SE versions getting a larger 54kWh for a range closer to 250 miles. What will the MINI Aceman look like? We’ve seen heavily disguised prototypes of the Aceman several times at this point, and it's clear that the car will utilise the brand’s new design language seen on the new Cooper and Countryman. It will also carry over plenty of inspiration from the Concept Aceman we saw in 2022.Our exclusive images give you a better idea of what the finished crossover should look like. Up front it’ll feature more angular headlights than traditionally seen on MINIs and a similar blanked-off octagonal grille to its siblings. Just like on other MINIs, we’ll see a lower window line wrap around the car combined with the classic two-tone roofline and MINI’s signature Union Jack rear light motif. The windscreen looks much more steeply angled than on some of MINI’s out-going models, possibly because the Aceman will only be offered with EV-power, making aerodynamic efficiency even more crucial. https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mini/aceman
  19. Manchester City's signing of RB Leipzig and Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol for £77m makes him the second-most expensive defender of all-time. The 21-year-old left-footed centre-back, who can play at left-back too, has been called 'little Pep' because of his name's similarity to City boss Pep Guardiola. So who is Gvardiol, just how good is he - and what would he bring to City? Who are the most expensive defenders ever? City already have three of the top 10 most expensive defenders- with Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo and Aymeric Laporte - although the futures of the latter two are in doubt. How will Gvardiol fit in at City? Gvardiol, who is 6ft 1in, is a left-sided central defender, and City feel he could feature in a back three or in a four-man defence. With Guardiola's management, though, it is hard to always gauge what might happen regarding a player's development. Gvardiol is primarily a centre-back, who has also played at left-back on occasion. John Stones, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji were considered to be central defenders too - but Ake and Akanji played some of last season at full-back and Stones ended the campaign in a hybrid midfield role. Gvardiol's statistics in the Bundesliga last season are comparable to City's current centre-back contingent. His passing accuracy is slightly lower, but he made more interventions and won possession more often. In Europe's top five leagues, only four defenders touched the ball more times per 90 minutes than Gvardiol. City's Ruben Dias topped the list, while Benjamin Pavard, Jordi Alba and Dayot Upamecano - from Guardiola's old teams Bayern Munich and Barcelona - were also above Gvardiol. One of Gvardiol's five goals for Leipzig was a header against City in the Champions League last 16 first leg this year. "He's fast, intense, dynamic, really good at changing directions and really good at transitioning from attack and defence and vice versa," German football expert Jasmine Baba told BBC Radio Manchester's We're Not Really Here podcast in June. "He's a really good, agile defender and his strength is in passing while he's in possession - even under pressure, he still finds solutions to play it forward. "John Stones has been pushed into more of a midfielder - I can see that happening with Gvardiol too. "It's kind of a no-brainer why someone like Pep Guardiola would want him. He really is a dream prospect at his young age." Who is Gvardiol and is he a proven winner? The defender already has four years of first-team experience with Dinamo Zagreb and Leipzig and has won a domestic cup in each of the past three seasons - in 2021 in Croatia and in the 2022 and 2023 German Cups. He was very close to joining Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United in 2020 but moved to Leipzig instead. "Gvardiol is the best central defender in the world. He's so mature. The way he plays, with the grace he controls the ball, it's amazing," said Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic last year. Gvardiol helped Croatia reach the World Cup semi-finals last year and scored in their third-place play-off win over Morocco. Only three players at the World Cup played more successful passes than Gvardiol's 463. City's Rodri led the way. Gvardiol ranked sixth for touches of the ball (612). Gvardiol made more clearances than any other player in Qatar with 37, and he was joint second, level with England's Declan Rice, for interceptions with 11. He also ranked fifth for headed clearances (14). A version of this article was first published in June 2023. 20. COUSLEY WOOD, England, July 14 (Reuters) - The finest wines may improve with age, but that does not mean their makers need to be vintage, as one young British viticulteur has proved. Twenty-year-old Ashton Kirby began working in the Bewl Water Vineyard in rolling countryside in East Sussex, southeast England, when his parents bought it in a neglected state three years ago. Since then, the former townie, to use his own word, has gained recognition for his wine-making skills and this year won the gold award for his Reserve Cuvée 2018 from British industry association WineGB. "These are Bacchus (grape) and these are from the 1970s. That means they are about 30 years older than me," Kirby told Reuters. He said that warmer British weather as a result of climate change meant the grape variety now produced "fantastic wine", which he described as an English Sauvignon Blanc. Last year, research from the University of Reading highlighted the impact of climate change on Britain's viticulture regions by 2050. It forecast that temperatures and rainfall in regions, such as the southeast and east of England, would mean British-grown Chardonnay grapes "will be ripe enough to produce high-quality still wine in most years." WineGB said the British wine industry was expanding at a phenomenal rate, with the area under plantation expected to double by 2032. "What we're starting to see is the emergence of a new generation of wine-maker," its interim CEO Ned Awty said. To suddenly have this new youthful vigour and excitement and not constrained by perhaps the ways of thinking that were developed around the old climate is really exciting to see." Kirby, who has a blonde mullet haircut and wore a heavy metal T-shirt, said winning the award was a great endorsement. "It's a way of saying I'm here ... and look, I do make fantastic wine and here is the proof," he said.
