A Palestinian child walks near cars burnt near Hawara By Tom Bateman BBC News, Hawara Homes in Hawara are charred black alongside burned-out cars cloaked in a layer of ash. The air tastes acrid as people speak of the night their town burned. Residents told the BBC a mob had gone on an hours-long rampage armed with iron bars and rocks before torching buildings, cars and trees. On Sunday the Palestinian town was subjected to one of the worst cases of mass Israeli settler violence in years, hours after two settlers were shot dead by a Palestinian gunman. The settlers attacked our house, they smashed the windows and burned my nephew's cars and trucks. They tried to break into my car showroom and set it on fire," said Abdel Nasser al-Junaidi, speaking outside his home. He described how he had rushed his children up to the rooftop to try to keep them safe. The army did nothing to protect us. It supported the settlers and protected them. The shooting was from both settlers and soldiers. We were terrified. What happened was a horrific and barbaric attack," said Mr al-Junaidi. The scale of the damage becomes clear when you keep walking the length of this town that sits astride Route 60 - the main highway running north-south through the occupied West Bank. A mob torched buildings, cars and trees Home after home is wrecked, shop-fronts are torched as are dozens of cars- including many in a used car lot that went up in flames. The Palestinian health ministry says 37-year-old Sameh Aqtash died after being shot in the stomach during an attack by settlers in Zaatara on Sunday night. Dozens more were wounded. One family had to be rescued by paramedics after becoming trapped in their house when settlers laid burning tyres outside their front door, blocking the route out. Israeli-American killed in West Bank amid unrest Several hundred metres away from the highway, an extended family tried to take refuge as their home came under attack. "My wife, my brother's wife, and our young children were in the house, they were screaming, and the children were crying, and they were crying out for protection from the settlers' oppression, and we could not reach them," said Oday al-Domadi, speaking to the BBC in the remains of his burned-out lounge. He rushed home from his work in Nablus after hearing that settlers were planning a march of "revenge" after the killing earlier of two Israeli settlers in the town. Hillel and Yagel Yaniv lived in the settlement of Har Bracha, which is 1.9km (1.2 miles) south of Nablus. "There were about 30 masked settlers carrying pistols who were destroying the house… The moment we entered the house, they discovered us, threw stones at us and broke my brother's shoulder. "I shouted at the soldiers to protect the children and prevent the settlers from frightening them, but the soldiers responded by shooting at me and shouting at me to stay at home," said Mr al-Domadi, who eventually managed to ensure his children were safely in another part of the building. "The worst thing is what the kids experienced - the terror and the panic they felt. Afterwards, they were trembling in fear and sheltering in my lap, begging me to stay beside them." The Israeli army has defended its handling of the violence but a military official said, "The wisdom of the deployment could be challenged." Israeli soldiers carry the coffin during the funeral of two Israeli brothers, Hillel and Yagel Yaniv Human rights groups have long blamed violence against Palestinian civilians on an atmosphere of impunity surrounding settler violence in the occupied West Bank, particularly in some of the most ideological settlements in the area around Hawara and Nablus. They say this has been now amplified with the powerful pro-settler, far-right component of Israel's new government. Israel's police routinely says it investigates such cases but campaigners say these are often a whitewash. Alongside waves of Israeli military search and arrest raids in Palestinian cities, and growing numbers of Palestinian armed attacks against Israelis, there is growing concern about a slide into uncontrollable violence. It increasingly feels like a tipping point is being reached, particularly amid increasing signs that the Palestinian Authority is unable to regain a grip on its limited security control of key cities, despite American-led attempts to help it do so. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-64757990

After the recent automatic Windows Updates KB5028244 and KB5027303 caused problems for many users, Microsoft has temporarily stopped distributing them. The Windows team is now in the process of correcting the error with the help of the “Known Issue Rollback” feature in Windows. Users reported problems playing videos after installing the updates from the end of June. Microsoft has now confirmed the issue and announced that it stems from a bug in the WVC1 and VC-1 video codecs. Apps for Windows 10 and Windows 11 that use these codecs may no longer be able to play back or record videos. Some cameras and webcams are also affected. Microsoft worked fast to correct the problem, as noted on the Windows Release Health Dashboard. Microsoft distributes emergency fix Microsoft just released an emergency fix. Following two years of false starts, 2023 looks to be the proper beginning of the PS5-Xbox Series generation, as Unreal Engine 5 support builds and an increasing number of developers drop support for Sony and Microsoft’s last-gen consoles. Starfield, Spider-Man 2, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and Final Fantasy 16 are only a handful of games built exclusively for new hardware, though PS4, Xbox One, and especially Switch owners have plenty to look forward to as well. With dozens of games delayed to 2023, a greater emphasis on new-gen hardware, and at least one major exclusive from each platform holder, next year easily houses the most exciting games lineup since the changing of the console guard in 2020. As we enter the new year, we’ve channeled that excitement into this list of 2023’s 44 biggest games, listed chronologically by release date. Only games with officially announced 2023 release dates/windows were considered for this list. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (2023-2024) and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (“next winter”), for example, have release windows that expand into 2024 and therefore aren’t included. Games expected to move out of Early Access in 2023, such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and Disney Dreamlight Valley, are also excluded. Nintendo kicks off a busy start to the year with Fire Emblem Engage on January 20. The Switch exclusive introduces an all-new protagonist to the series in the red-and-blue-haired Alear. This latest mainline Fire Emblem allows players to summon, or “engage,” heroes from the series' past, including original protagonist and Smash Bros. staple Marth. When a past hero is engaged, Alear inherits their weapons and skills. Following two delays in 2022, Forspoken is finally set to hit PS5 and PC on January 24. The new action RPG from Square Enix is worth keeping an eye on for several reasons, chief among them being its all-star writing team of Rogue One’s Gary Whitta, Uncharted’s Amy Hennig and Todd Stashwick (Uncharted), and Shadowhunters’ Allison Rymer. Forspoken’s isekai narrative concept sees protagonist Frey transported from modern-day New York City into Athia, a fantastical world of magic and deep mythology. As Frey journeys to return home, she'll learn other-worldly abilities that aid in both combat and traversal. 2023’s Dead Space is a ground-up remake of the 2008 survival horror classic. It’s fully rebuilt in EA's Frostbite engine with “all new assets, new character models, [and] new environments” based on the original designs. It’s still Dead Space at its core, though the team at EA Motive is keeping things fresh by introducing new systems such as Peeling, which allows players to shoot additional flesh, tendons, and bones off of Necromorphs. It’s both a visual treat for gorehounds and a clever health bar for Dead Space’s mutated baddies. https://www.ign.com/videos/dead-space-scene-and-graphic-comparison-ign-first

With government funding slated to run out September 30, the leaders of the bipartisan House Problem Solvers Caucus told CNN on Sunday that “all options are on the table” to force a vote on their alternative stopgap plan to avert a shutdown. There is no consensus plan to keep the government funded, and persistent opposition by a bloc of conservatives to House GOP leadership’s agenda has made any effort to pass a stopgap bill in the House a major challenge. While the caucus leaders, Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick and Josh Gottheimer, said they hope House Speaker Kevin McCarthy puts the measure on the floor, they said they have spoken with the parliamentarian about other avenues and raised the possibility of using a discharge petition – an arcane procedural step – to force a vote. The procedural tool can be used to force a floor vote, but only if a majority of House members sign on in support. Discharge petitions rarely succeed because of how high the threshold is to clear. “We’re going to do whatever it takes to get that bill on the floor. … A discharge petition is one of several options, and a group of us met with the parliamentarian this past week to discuss all the options we have to force a vote on our bill,” Fitzpatrick, a Pennsylvania Republican, told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.” Gottheimer, a New Jersey Democrat, added: “I think our plan is reasonable. And it deals with the extremes and … instead of burning the place down as, Speaker McCarthy said of the far right, it actually provides a reasonable, commonsense solution working with people like Brian Fitzpatrick who want to get things done.” The caucus last week endorsed a potential backup plan if House Republicans are unable to pass their stopgap bill alone. The bill would fund the government through January 11 and include Ukraine aid, disaster response and border security provisions. “This is a decision the speaker is gonna have to make. He can bring that reasonable bill to the floor that we’ve proposed, and I guarantee you’re gonna get Democrats (and) Republicans coming together to support it and we can keep the lights on,” Gottheimer said. McCarthy, who is under pressure and has faced threats of an ouster, said Saturday he still lacks support from a handful of GOP hardliners to put a stopgap measure on the floor, making a shutdown likely. Rep. Tim Burchett, one of the holdouts, told CNN on Sunday he is still a “no” on passing a stopgap funding bill. “No, ma’am,” the Tennessee Republican told Bash. “I think it’s completely blowing away our duties. We have a duty to pass a budget.” He also said he would strongly consider support for ousting McCarthy if the California Republican cuts a deal with Democrats to keep the government open. “That would be something I’d look strongly at, ma’am, if we do away with our duty that we said we’re going to do,” Burchett said. McCarthy has been hoping the momentum of a handful of appropriations bills, which will head to the House floor this week, would bring some of those holdouts into the fold. But Burchett’s comments Sunday are the latest indication that hope may be in vain. “We’re sticking to our guns and all of a sudden we’re the bad guys because we want to balance our budget,” Burchett said. Another holdout, Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, said Sunday that McCarthy is in “breach” of promises he made regarding government spending when elected speaker. “We should have separate single-subject spending bills. Kevin McCarthy promised that in January, he is in breach of that promise, so I’m not here to hold the government hostage, I’m here to hold Kevin McCarthy to his word,” Gaetz said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.” Gaetz added it would be fine if some departments shut down for a few days if it meant measures such as the Homeland Security appropriations bill passed first. “If, you know, the (departments) of Labor and Education have to shut down for a few days as we get their appropriations in line, that’s certainly not something that is optimal, but I think it’s better than continuing on the current path we are to America’s financial ruin,” Gaetz said. The holdouts’ comments come as the White House urges Republicans to find a solution, warning that a government shutdown could threaten crucial federal programs. “Funding the government is one of the most basic responsibilities of Congress, and it’s time for Republicans to start doing the job America elected them to do,” President Joe Biden said Sunday at an event held by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. Speaking on Sunday to CNN’s Bash, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg called on House Republicans to “come to their senses and keep the government running.” “This is something that can and should be prevented,” Buttigieg said on “State of the Union.” He echoed Biden administration talking points, saying Republicans should hold up their end of the agreement made this year during debt ceiling negotiations. The White House has warned of massive disruptions to air travel if the government shuts down, as tens of thousands of air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration personnel will have to work without pay. “They’re under enough stress as it is doing that job without having to come into work with the added stress of not receiving a paycheck,” Buttigieg said of air traffic controllers. He added, “The American people don’t want to shutdown. From what I can tell, the Senate is ready to go. The administration is ready to go. House Republicans need to come to their senses and keep the government running.” https://edition.cnn.com/2023/09/24/politics/government-shutdown-discharge-petition/index.html

[Animals] Rewilding leads to bumper year for rare Kent moth
Angel of Death posted a topic in Animals
Black-veined moths are the same size as a butterfly At a glance Surveys counted a peak of 255 black-veined moths this summer The moth was close to extinction in 1995 Farmers were encouraged to restore their fields so the moths could thriveA critically-endangered moth indigenous to the east Kent countryside has had a bumper year after its habitat was restored by farmers. In 1995, the black-veined moth was close to extinction due to the loss of their chalk grassland habitat in the Wye National Nature Reserve. Natural England launched a project encouraging farmers to restore fields back to their natural form. This year, surveys counted a peak of 255 moths, the highest number recorded since the project began. Dan Turson, Natural England's farm adviser, said: "Farmers are leading nature recovery through long-term one-to-one advice and close working to create new wildflower grasslands at scale."He said they were now seeing the results of the farmers' hard work. Black-veined moths look like white butterflies patterned with distinctive black lines across their wings. To survive, they need a mosaic of both tall tufts of grass and short wildflowers within the same field, making them much rarer than other insects that live in chalk grassland. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cndejylzl8eo -
Detroit — The North American Car, Truck, and Utility of the Year awards kicked off Wednesday's first full day of the Detroit auto show with the “Best of 2024” vehicles nominated for the 2024 prize. Ten cars, five trucks and 10 utility vehicles advance to the semifinal round of the prestigious contest. The list is full of surprises. In the SUV category, America’s iconic Jeep Wrangler did not make the cut, likely because its 2024 model was more update than remake. That, and electric vehicles are all the rage, and the jury was smitten by pricey EVs like the $56K Chevrolet Blazer EV and the $68K Genesis GV70 Electrified. Clever, compact SUVs like the all-new Chevy Trax and Buick Envista also were overlooked despite affordable, sub-$30K sticker prices at a time when Americans are struggling to afford inflated, $50K-average new vehicle prices. The 25 best were winnowed from a field of 52 eligible 2024 models. The affordable Subaru Crosstrek was also passed over (though its sister Impreza hatchback got a car nominee nod) as was the Alfa Romeo Tonale, the luxury brand’s peppy plug-in hybrid that marks a new era of electrification for the Italian brand. Notable Utility nominees include the first electric Chevrolet Equinox, quick Dodge Hornet, stylish Mazda CX-90 and the Kia EV9 — the first three-row electric SUV. https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/detroit-auto-show/2023/09/13/here-are-the-25-best-of-2024-vehicles-in-the-nactoy-awards/70828134007/

celebrations at the Maracaná, after beating Boca 2-1 in extra time, are still latent in Fluminense. The Cariocas, in addition to conquering America for the first time in their history, won an important economic prize and qualification for other international cups. Yes, by staying with the Libertadores, the Flu will face Liga de Quito, Inter Miami and León for another crown. First on the calendar will be the Club World Cup (possible final against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, to be played in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between December 12 and 22) and the Cup Winners' Cup against LDU, in February 2024. And, next Unlike previous years, being continental champion allows you to advance to an interesting intercontinental competition. This is the Inter-American Cup, the one that has historically been played between 1969 and 1998, which pitted the winner of the Libertadores against the champion of the Concacaf Champions League. However, the 2024 edition will be remastered and will have some changes that led to the League and Inter Miami being able to participate All that remains is to know the venue (the three games would take place in the same stadium) and the official schedule for said contest. Inter Miami entered for the Leagues Cup, León of Mexico for the Concachampions and, of course, Liga de Quito for the Sudamericana and Fluminense for the Libertadores. https://www.ole.com.ar/ecuador/internacional/fluminense-campeon-libertadores-liga-quito-sudamericana-inter-miami-copa-interamericana_0_Sc3Cbgan9w.html

While universities in the United States might be the first to include courses and units on popstar Taylor Swift’s legendary lyrics, Europe is swiftly catching up with the University of Ghent in Belgium launching its own Taylor Swift-inspired literature course. The course titled “Literature: Taylor’s Version” — a reference to the singer’s re-recorded album titles — will be taught by British professor Elly McCausland. Due to start in the fall, it will be added to the master’s degree in language and literature. McCausland, who is also the author of the blog “Swifterature”, which compares the popstar’s themes, imagery and use of language to prolific writers like Sylvia Plath, Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare, told The Guardian that she has never received so many emails from excited students asking if they can take the course. “And actually, non-students as well, people who are not part of the university and who want to participate in some way,” she said. The professor pitched the idea of a Swift-centered elective — first of its kind in Europe — after the singer’s lyrics drew a parallel with the English literature she had long studied. “Highly prolific and autobiographical in her songwriting, Swift makes frequent allusions to canonical literary texts in her music,” the class syllabus explains. “Using Swift’s work as a springboard, we will explore, among other topics, literary feminism, ecocriticism, fan studies, and tropes such as the anti-hero. Swift’s enduring po[CENSORED]rity stems, at least in part, from the heavily intertextual aspect of her work, and this course will dig deeper to explore its literary roots. ” Freedom Sale In Swift’s song The Great War McCausland saw a resemblance to how Plath spoke about war and battle to convey her pain in the poem Daddy, while the singer’s Mad Woman and the story it tells about patriarchy and mental health saw echoes of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story The Yellow Wallpaper. “What I want to do is show students that although these texts might seem inaccessible, they can be accessible if we look at them from a slightly different angle,” McCausland told the outlet. “So, Shakespeare, in some way, is actually addressing a lot of the same questions as Taylor Swift is today, which seems crazy. But he is.” But Swift isn’t the first pop star to attract the attention of academia. Before this, Beyoncé’s visual album “Lemonade” and its relationship to Black feminism was unpacked by the University of Texas in an English Literature course. The University of Copenhagen too began offering “Beyoncé, Gender and Race”. However, McCausland’s course has not been received well by everyone, with critics calling it frivolous and silly. But, in general, the atmosphere has been cordial with many people enthusiastic about it. “There’s been only a couple of outright critical voices, and that only really reaffirms what I’m trying to do — even the hate mail I find quite wonderful, to be honest! I mean, don’t print that quote as in ‘send more hate mail’ please,” she told CNN. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/taylor-swift-inspired-literature-course-belgian-university-8894922/

A Russian guided air bomb has hit a blood transfusion centre in north-eastern Ukraine, killing and injuring people, Ukraine's president has said. Volodymyr Zelensky said rescuers were now trying to tackle a blaze after the strike on the Kupiansk community in the Kharkiv region on Saturday night. "Defeating terrorists is a matter of honour for everyone who values life," he added. Russia has so far not publicly commented on the reported attack. Two months in, Ukraine's big offensive is slower than it hoped In a post on social media, Mr Zelensky described the perpetrators as "beasts" who were seeking to "destroy everything that simply allows to live". "This was crime alone says everything about Russian aggression," he said. He did not say how many people were killed and injured in the attack. The BBC has not been able to immediately verify the report. The city of Kupiansk and nearby settlements were seized by Russian troops in the first few days of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched in February 2022. The area was liberated during a lightning-quick Ukrainian counter-offensive last September. President Zelensky also said that on Saturday Russia separately carried out a missile attack, targeting an aeronautical company run by group Motor Sich in the western Khmelnytskyi region. The Russian strikes come after Moscow accused Ukraine of hitting a Russian tanker with 11 crew members in the Black Sea - the second such sea drone attack in as many days. Russian maritime officials said the engine room of the Sig tanker was damaged in the attack in the Kerch Strait. No-one was injured. Russian tanker hit in attack near Crimea The Kerch Strait connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, separating Crimea - Ukraine's peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014 - and Russia's Taman peninsula. Ukraine has not publicly commented. But a Ukrainian security service source told the BBC a sea drone had been used. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-66419331

Microsoft's Pavan Davuluri will lead a team focused on Windows software, devices portfolio and semiconductor chips, the company said on Monday, while announcing the departure of longtime product chief Panos Panay. The team led by Davuluri will "build silicon, systems and devices that span Windows, client and cloud for an AI world," according to a staff email by Rajesh Jha, executive vice president of experiences and devices group at Microsoft. Reuters has seen a copy of the email. Microsoft has made big bets on generative AI, integrating the technology into a wide array of its products, including cloud, search and productivity software and services such as its Office suite. The rejigging of teams comes as Panay steps down after nearly 20 years with the Redmond, Washington-based company, where he helmed the creation of the Surface line of computers and more recently oversaw the launch of the Windows 11 operating system. Davuluri will report to Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella, the email said. Microsoft is also creating a team to work on web services and Windows experiences with a focus on AI-based offerings. The company is hosting a "special event" on September 21, where it is expected to announce updates to its Surface lineup, among other updates. https://www.gadgets360.com/internet/news/microsoft-product-chief-panos-panay-resignation-pavan-davuluri-lead-windows-team-4402216

Dotted around my home are a handful of security cameras. I have a Nest Cam Outdoor for my backyard, a Nest Hello video doorbell at my front door, and in my living room a Nest Dropcam that's been watching my home for a decade. Within a year, it'll be a useless collection of glass, metal, plastic, and silicon, and it's all Google's fault. This week Google announced that it's discontinuing support for Dropcam. This doesn't just mean that the wireless (aside from power) webcam will no longer get software and firmware updates. It means it will stop working with the Google Nest App. I manage all three cameras through the one app, which is awesome. As Google explained in an email I received on Friday, "Starting April 8, 2024, your Dropcam will no longer work. You won’t be able to use the Nest app to check the status of your Dropcam, view live streams, receive notifications, or change settin In other words, a piece of smart home hardware I bought more than a decade ago and that's been working perfectly for years will cease to perform its singular task. In the email, Google somewhat disingenuously notes that when it launched Dropcam 10 years ago, " it was one of the first smart cameras on the market." They're almost half right. Dropcam has been around since at least 2010 when it was an independent company. Then Nest, which had been acquired by Google(opens in new tab) only months before, purchased them in 2014. Google spent years rebranding, reskinning, then ultimately pushing Dropcam into the shadows. That didn't seem to bother my Dropcam, (officially known as Dropcam DCAM-001-THD) which quietly captured HD-quality video and streamed it over my Wi-Fi network to first my Dropcam app and eventually the Nest app, allowing me to check in on my home (video and audio) from anywhere in the world. Now the clock is ticking on its demise. An empty offer But wait. Google is doing right by devoted Dropcam owners like me. It's offering me a 50% discount on a new Nest Cam. It's a nice device with not only HD-quality video, but night vision and a really wide 135-degree field of view. It normally costs $99.99 but I could get it for $50. Or not. Turns out the deal is only good for people who also pay for Google's Nest Aware(opens in new tab) cloud-based video monitoring. For $6 a month, you can go back and see all the videos your Nest Cam captured. Without it, you can only see live video and motion alerts-based clips for last hour or so. I have never paid for Nest Aware (I don't need another monthly bill), so I am not qualified for this discount. Maybe it's for the best because, as of April 8, 2024, whatever video history Google has from my Drop Cam would no longer be available anyway. For those that do have a history, Google suggests downloading it ASAP. Google seems intent on tightening its smart home loop to both simplify its use and maybe make it more secure (this may all be in preparation for a wholesale switch to the more unified Matter platform). In addition to killing off Dropcam, Google is ending its "Works with Nest" program. It's been in the process of winding support for third-party products within the Nest ecosystem for years but now it's set a cut-off date. Connections between Nest and these devices will stop working on September 29, 2023. This will get worse I'm slowly coming to grips with the harsh reality of smart home technology. Unlike your analog deadbolt lock and key that might remain unchanged and functional for decades, smart home technology is almost alive. It's constantly getting software updates and will always need software support for both its firmware and the app that controls it. Eventually, they might stop supporting your old smart light, lock, and camera in favor of a new and better one. New software will support both old and new devices, but not indefinitely. Eventually, you'll be forced to replace that smart home piece of technology, and far sooner than you might've had to replace that classic door lock. This is our new reality and the end of the line for my Dropcam. I get one more year with it and then, well, I guess I'll take Google up on its free recycling offer. Bye, Dropcam, thanks for keeping a digital eye on my home. I really do appreciate it, https://www.techradar.com/opinion/google-sets-dropcam-demise-date-and-i-say-goodbye-to-a-friend

By now we all know that Apple gave up its agreement with Intel and has been using chips based on ARM architecture for three years now. ARM is not a manufacturer, but only designs the chips and "rents" its patents so that others can manufacture the processors based on their designs by paying royalties. The amount they pay logically depends on the agreement between both companies, and now it has become known that what those from Cupertino pay is almost insulting... Apple's change from Intel to ARM has not been gradual, but was almost sudden. And it is normal now that we know what it has cost them, because a new report sheds light on Apple's agreement with ARM, stating that the American giant pays less than 30 cents for each chip in copyright. Apple represents 5% of ARM's revenue When we deal with a giant like Apple, it is normal to think that everything is magnified. But as they say, no one gets rich by giving money away and proof of this is that although the agreement between Apple and ARM could be one of the largest for the British company, in reality it only represents 5% of its profits. annual income. https://hardzone.es/noticias/procesadores/apple-arm-royalties/
