  1. It’s a hard world for sedans these days, but the venerable Honda Accord shines as an affordable and fuel-efficient alternative to the SUVs of the world. Redesigned for the 2023 model year, the Accord and Accord Hybrid carry over into 2024 largely unchanged. We liked the Accord Hybrid so much that it came out on top in our comparison with a Toyota Camry Hybrid, and we’re excited to revisit that comparison once we get our hands on the redesigned 2025 Camry. A majority of the Accord lineup employs a hybrid powertrain in Sport, EX-L, Sport-L and Touring trim levels, which in our own fuel-economy testing managed nearly 52 mpg. Helping the Accord Hybrid win its comparison with the Camry was also a comfortable, spacious and well-made interior employing useful and intuitive technology. What also stands out is that even as a hybrid, the Accord isn’t simply an appliance meant to get you from A to B (though it will do that job happily). It’s genuinely fun to drive, with sporty suspension tuning and communicative steering that can make tackling twisty roads enjoyable. A boatload of standard safety features and solid scores in our Car Seat Check make the Accord an excellent SUV alternative for families. A sub-$30,000 starting price should help alleviate budgetary concerns, and even if you splurge on a fully loaded Accord Touring, you’ll still be spending right around $40,000. Even as sedan choices continue to dwindle, the Accord remains not just one of the best sedans, but one of the best vehicles on the market. https://www.cars.com/articles/best-car-of-2024-476768/
  2. Shock 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco cruised to a 3-0 win over 10-man Tanzania as they opened their Africa Cup of Nations campaign on Wednesday, while 2012 champions Zambia held the Democratic Republic of Congo. Captain Romain Saiss, Azzedine Ounahi and Youssef En-Nesyri all netted for Morocco in the Ivorian coastal city of San-Pedro, while Tanzania had Novatus Miroshi sent off. Although an African powerhouse for decades, Morocco are seeking only a second Cup of Nations title, 48 years after lifting the trophy in Ethiopia. Morocco sprang to international prominence just over a year ago in Qatar when they became the first ever African World Cup semi-finalists, eliminating Spain and Portugal along the way. Wednesday's victory over Group F outsiders Tanzania was anticipated as Morocco are ranked 13th in the world, 108 places above the Taifa Stars. Morocco began with seven of the team that started in the 2-0 World Cup semi-final loss to France in Qatar. There were three La Liga players, two each from the Premier League and Ligue 1 and two with Saudi Pro League sides. This contrasted sharply with Tanzania, whose line-up included Tarryn Allarakhia from English fifth-tier outfit Wealdstone. The winger struggled in sweltering conditions and was replaced after 38 minutes, by which time Morocco were already ahead. Hakim Ziyech, on loan to Galatasaray from Chelsea, lifted a free-kick over the defensive wall and when goalkeeper Aisha Manula failed to grasp it, Saiss converted the loose ball. Tanzanian hopes of finding an equaliser suffered a huge blow with 20 minutes remaining when Miroshi fouled Ounahi and was sent off for a second booking. 'On a mission' Ounahi rounded off a fine move to make it 2-0 on 77 minutes, and the scoring was complete shortly after when En-Nesyri converted a low cross for a goal that was confirmed as onside following a VAR check. "We're focused, we're on a mission here, and we have a status to live up to," admitted Morocco coach Walid Regragui. "People are waiting for us to deliver, but we are keeping our feet on the ground and we respected Tanzania in this game." The spoils were shared in the second match of the day later on in the same group, played at the same stadium named after deceased Ivorian star Laurent Pokou. Kings Kangwa lobbed Zambia into the lead midway through the first half after Congolese goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi came racing out of his area and could not get back into position in time. But Yoane Wissa, who has four goals in the English Premier League this season for Brentford, converted Cedric Bakambu's low centre to make it 1-1 before the half-hour mark, and that was how it finished. Congo thought they had won a penalty just after the hour mark when the Ethiopian referee ruled that Tandi Mwape had blocked Arthur Masuaku's cross with his arm. However, the decision was correctly overturned following a review, with the official able to see that Mwape had made the block with his chest. Zambia, coached by Avram Grant, were making their comeback after missing the last three editions of the AFCON and were looking for their first win at the tournament since lifting the trophy against the odds in 2012. The next games in Group F are on Sunday, with Morocco meeting the Congolese before Zambia take on Tanzania. All teams at the Cup of Nations have now played once, and the action continues on Thursday with a triple-header of matches in Abidjan, Ivory Coast's economic capital. Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau meet at the Ebimpe Olympic Stadium at 1400 GMT before Group A rivals Nigeria and hosts Ivory Coast face off in a heavyweight clash. That will be followed later by the Group B clash at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium between Mohamed Salah's Egypt, the record seven-time African champions, and a Ghana side reeling after losing their opening match to Cape Verde. https://www.france24.com/en/africa/20240117-afcon-2024-wissa-scores-equaliser-for-dr-congo-securing-1-1-draw-against-zambia
  3. Rare Disease Day 2024: Rare Diseases of the world may not get our attention on a daily basis, even when they should. When very few people get affected by a disease, it may not be a part of the mainstream news – making it difficult for us to access such information. However, rare diseases can be deadly and can claim a lot of lives. Rare Disease Day is observed every year to create awareness on the rare diseases that exist and how they can affect the daily lives of the patients. As we gear up to observe Rare Disease Day for this year, here are a few facts that we must know about the important day. Every year, Rare Disease Day is observed on the last day of February. Every year, Rare Disease Day is celebrated on February 28. However, since the year 2024 is a leap year, Rare Disease Day will be observed on February 29. This year, the day falls on a Thursday. History: In the year 2008, EURORDIS, with the Council of National Alliances announced Rare Diseases Day to be observed on February 29 keeping in mind the rarity of the date in the calendar. In the first year of celebrations, Rare Disease Day saw participation from eighteen countries in Europe. Since then, Rare Disease Day has been observed on the last day of February every year. According to the official website of the National Organisation for Rare Diseases, “One out of every 10 Americans is living with a rare disease. Worldwide, there are more than 300 million people with rare diseases. Too often, these individuals and families are left isolated and without answers to their medical questions. It doesn't have to be that way. Rare Disease Day is a global initiative to raise awareness and generate support for everyone who is on a rare medical journey. It takes place on the last day of February, which this year is February 29th, the rarest day of the year.” https://www.hindustantimes.com/lifestyle/health/rare-disease-day-2024-date-history-and-significance-101709031208495.html
  4. Spain is mulling transferring the management of the airspace of the Sahara territory to Morocco, ending one of the last relics of Spanish colonial rule in the area. Spanish media El Confidentiel and OK Diario reported the news, citing that the decision entails Morocco opening customs with two Spanish-occupied enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. Discussions over the Sahara airspace began in March 2023, according to OK Diario, as relations improved between the two neighborly countries following Spain’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty and autonomy plan in the Sahra territory. Moroccan officials have not confirmed the news. Morocco has already demarcated its Sahara maritime borders in 2020 and said negotiations are ongoing with Spain on overlaps. In his visit earlier this month, Sanchez met King Mohammed VI in Rabat where he reiterated Madrid’s steady position in support of the autonomy plan as the “the most serious, realistic and credible basis” to end the Sahara dispute. https://northafricapost.com/75450-spain-prepares-transferring-sahara-airspace-management-to-morocco.html

  8. isn’t one of our favorite trade shows just because it’s situated in the beautiful city of Barcelona during a seasonally appropriate time of year. (Cheap cava and tapas don’t have anything to do with it either.) No, this show is a favorite because it’s one of the easiest to navigate, and there’s always plenty of interesting, fun, or just plain crazy tech to scavenge through. This year, such bounty includes transparent laptops, bendable phones, a Barbie flip phone, and more. Here are the highlights. Special offer for Gear readers: Get WIRED for just $5 ($25 off). Subscriptions help fund the work we do every day.HMD was supposed to be the rebirth of Nokia phones back when it made a splash at MWC 2017, but it wasn’t long before the company lost steam and it was clear that the Nokia brand name wouldn’t really compete with the likes of Samsung and Apple anymore. HMD instead put its focus on budget Android phones over the past few years and its feature phone business. At MWC, it announced that 2023 was the company’s first profitable year, and now it’s trying to change things up with a rebrand. First is the name—it’s leaning more on “Human Mobile Devices” (the full version of its acronym) instead of HMD. This year’s lineup of devices will include an HMD phone, an iconic Nokia phone, plus a Barbie flip phone. Yep, you heard that right. HMD is collaborating with Mattel to launch a Barbie feature flip phone. It’ll be coming this summer, will obviously be pink, and is being touted as a digital detox device. That’s all we know. The only pictures of all the teased phones were pixelated. What we do know about HMD’s other phone is that it will revolve around a system called HMD Fusion. Similar to Motorola’s Moto Mods or Google’s long-lost Project Ara, it sounds like a system of modular components that developers can build for the smartphone, from an extended battery and a barcode scanner to a payment terminal to medical equipment. It released a toolkit that developers can use to get started. HMD also had a big focus on repairability—it expects half of its devices launched globally this year to be repairable. But this summer, it says it will have a system that dramatically reduces the number of steps it takes to fix a cracked screen. Late last year at Lenovo’s Tech World event, Motorola unveiled a bendable concept phone called the Adaptive Display. I got a chance to play around with it at MWC. It looks and feels like its Razr folding phones, except instead of having a hinge that snaps the phone closed precisely in half, you can bend the whole thing backward. For example, two people can watch a movie together; I watched two people play a quick game of Connect 4. There’s also a magnetic band you can wear that the phone clips to—wrap the device over your wrist and now you have a smart bracelet (of sorts). The interface adapts to show information on the top part of the screen. It’s fun and wacky, but I have to admit it looks quite janky. Last year’s concept phone from Motorola was Rizr, which had a screen that rolled up to extend the display size despite the small design—I dare say I’d rather it be put into production than the bendy thing. Motorola also announced a new software feature in conjunction with its parent company, Lenovo, called Smart Connect. This is an evolution of its Ready For platform, that enabled you to wirelessly connect a Motorola phone to nearby displays to stream apps, use the phone’s camera as a webcam, and share files. Smart Connect expands on these features and will be available on Windows laptops via the Microsoft Store. If you have a compatible Lenovo tablet or a Motorola smartphone, you can then seamlessly move your apps between the screens, very much like Apple’s Universal Control feature. You can even use the laptop’s keyboard and mouse on the tablet and phone. Lenovo and Motorola isn’t the only company that showed off something like this—Honor had the same functionality with its laptop, phone, and tablet. https://www.wired.com/story/all-the-top-new-gadgets-at-mwc-2024/
  9. nnounced significant new developments across its 5G, SD-WAN, SASE and Edge Compute, collectively the Software-Defined Edge portfolio, to enable Communications Service Providers (CSPs) to modernize their networks and create new monetizable services. The new developments are also co-innovated with ecosystem partners and enable enterprises to run workloads at the edge at scale with automation and unprecedented observability. “VMware’s software-defined edge has the interest of CSPs and enterprises, and we’re advancing our integrated approach across our edge compute, intelligent overlay and telco cloud offerings,” said Sanjay Uppal, vice president and general manager, Software-Defined Edge (SDE) Division, Broadcom. “In the overlay, we’re introducing a new single-vendor SASE solution with Symantec—helping enterprises connect and better secure the distributed edge. In the telco cloud, we’re enabling CSPs to modernize their core and RAN infrastructure to deliver monetizable services.” VMware defines the software-defined edge as distributed digital infrastructure for running workloads across a number of locations, close to endpoints that are producing or consuming data. It extends to where the users and devices are – in the office, on the road, in a cell site or on the factory floor. VMware addresses the three layers of the software-defined edge: the edge compute stack which hosts the applications and workloads; the intelligent overlay where connectivity and security services run across the WAN; and the underlay network layer, which runs the software for network connectivity across fixed and 5G networks to provide orchestration and network programmability. Introducing VMware VeloCloud SASE, Secured by Symantec Today, VMware and Symantec, part of Broadcom, unveiled VMware VeloCloud SASE, secured by Symantec—a single-vendor SASE solution. The new offering is a culmination of joint efforts to integrate best-in-class VMware VeloCloud SD-WAN (formerly VMware SD-WAN) and Symantec Security Service Edge (SSE) capabilities. The solution extends significant benefits to Broadcom’s installed base VeloCloud and Symantec customers. VMware VeloCloud SASE, secured by Symantec, is now generally available. Additionally, the Software-Defined Edge division is re-introducing the VeloCloud brand, which has a high-degree of customer acceptance and trust. The VeloCloud portfolio includes the aforementioned VMware VeloCloud SASE as well as the VMware VeloCloud SD-WAN and VMware VeloCloud SD-Access products. 15. Rabat - Morocco’s economy is expected to grow by 3,7%, Deputy Minister for Budget Fouzi Lekjaa said on Friday as he presented the general framework of the Moroccan government’s Finance Bill (PLF) for 2024. However, the deputy minister highlighted that these forecasts are contingent on a number of factors and may be subject to downward revision if the global economic situation deteriorates further. He cited factors such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, explaining its ramifications could impact commodity prices, global production, and supply chains, as well as tighter monetary conditions -- all of which may necessitate revisiting the growth projections. Delving into the specifics, Lekjaa outlined the three-year budget programming forecasts for the period of 2024-2026. According to these projections, Morocco’ gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to grow by 3.7% in 2024, followed by growth rates of 3.6% in 2025 and 4% in 2026. In terms of the agricultural sector, the value added (VA) is forecasted to rise by 5.9% in 2024, with subsequent growth rates of 4.1% in 2025 and 4.8% in 2026. On the other hand, the non-agricultural value added is projected to increase by 3.4% in 2024, 3.6% in 2025, and 3.9% in 2026. Read also : Moroccan Economy Improves by 3.5% in First Quarter of 2023 To support these estimations, the assumptions underlying the projections mentioned in Lekjaa’s presentation also consider an inflation rate limited to 3.4% in 2024, followed by a lower rate of 2% in both 2025 and 2026. These economic projections provide insight into the government’s expectations for Morocco’s future economic performance. As with any forecasts, they are subject to various external factors and global developments that may necessitate revisions. Given this, Lekjaa concluded, the government will closely monitor the global economic situation and adapt its plan accordingly to ensure sustainable growth and stability in the national economy. 16. Minneapolis Animal Care and Control (MACC) has changed its pet adoption fees in hopes of more animals finding their fur-ever homes and to help clear space as the shelter nears capacity. The MACC is waiving and lowering pet adoption fees for 2024, including: The change comes as Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey invests an additional $600,000 in funding for MACC this year. At least $250,000 will go towards shelter renovations, $90,000 for the food, materials, and supply budget, and $365,000 for hiring additional staff. "About nine years ago, my life changed when I brought home my cat Ronda from MACC," said Mayor Frey. "I know firsthand the life-changing impact animal shelters can have on the pets they serve and the families they go home with. MACC does an incredible job taking care of our furry and very loveable residents. I’m proud to support their ongoing efforts with more than $600,000 in additional funding this year." The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 7 p.m. on Thursday.
