  1. The Japanese developer Korg makes both hardware and software. The company has a lot of support for its iOS apps. Korg Gadget is particularly po[CENSORED]r. It’s a simplified form of a DAW that allows anyone to make music using a wide range of sweetspot gadgetized synths, drum machines, and effects. A longstanding weakness of Gadget is the lack of AUv3 support on iOS. A format that is becoming a must-have on iOS and allows musicians to use plugins from other developers in DAWs. With the introduction of Logic Pro on iOS and Cubasis, AUv3 has become indispensable for mobile musicians.NAMM 2024 is around the corner, and it’s the music tech show at which Korg always shows new products. The first is Korg Gadget 3. It is a major update for the iOS, macOS, and Windows versions. However, the Windows version still only consists of the plugins. No standalone app.Gadget in version 3 remains true to the po[CENSORED]r concept. A simplified form of a DAW packed with small synthesizers, effects, etc., better known as gadgets. Version 3 introduces two new gadgets. Santa Ana is a new sample-based rhythm guitar virtual instrument, and Sydney is a flexible loop sampler with time stretch. Then, you work with five new effects (IFX), including 8-band EQ, transient shaper, stereo image, auto pumper, and a pitch shifter. The biggest news for iOS users is AUv3 support. This major new feature unlocks the Gadgets instruments from the Gadget ecosystem and makes them available in other apps. For example, owners of all Gadgets will get 40+ new virtual instruments that they can now use not only in KG3 but also in apps such as Logic Pro, AUM, and others. That’s a big step forward. Important, apps that are gadgetized versions of its big version like iPolysix, MS-20… are not available yet as AUv3. Korg also promises that the new Gadget 3 workflow is easier and more intuitive, thanks to optimizations. A new Play page also brings an easy-to-use arpeggiator and a chord function. Besides this, you can explore a new sound browser that lets you select Gadgets by the timbre you want. If you unlock the complete Gadget Instrument collection, it gives you access to over 6,000 sound programs. Further, you get a new genre-select function that allows you to create songs from your favorite patterns. So, basically, it is a song mode that is built in now Gadget 3. A great addition, making it more flexible for composing. The biggest news for iOS users is AUv3 support. Hope this is the start of updates to your other po[CENSORED]r synth apps. The new Gadget 3 update has many nice additions, especially the new effects are good to see. The new gadgets look interesting. But they don’t trigger the purchase button directly for me. Either way, a nice update for Gadget. Glad to see the project continues. One downer, the update price from Gadget 2 on Mac/PC is perhaps a bit too high. Korg Gadget 3 is available now for an introductory price of $249 instead of $299. It runs on macOS. The Gadget 3 plugins are available for an intro price of $149 instead of $199 and run on macOS and Windows. Upgrades are available for $99 for existing Korg Gadget 2 and plugin users. The iOS version of Korg Gadget 3 is available now for an intro price of $19,99. The new instruments are available via an in-app purchase for an intro price of $9,99. The update from 2.0 to 3.0 is free of charge for existing users on iOS. https://synthanatomy.com/2024/01/korg-gadget-3-two-new-gadgets-new-fxs-and-ios-auv3-support.html
  2. Now that the year is almost over, system component manufacturers are preparing products for CES 2024, starting during the 2nd week of January. Phison has announced four products that it will showcase at its CES 2024 booth, including a new USB 4 controller, two new M.2 SSD controllers, and a prototype Gen 5 SSD featuring sequential read speeds that outperform the Best SSDs on the market today. The two memory controllers Phison announced include the PS5031-E31T and the PS5027-E27T. The former is a low-powered M.2 PCIe Gen 5 controller featuring maximum sequential read and write speed support of up to 10,800 MB/s and random read-write performance of up to 1,500,000 IOPS. The controller is built on TSMC's 7nm process featuring a 4-channel configuration, an ARM Coretex R5 CPU, AES 256 encryption, Phison's 7th Gen LDPC, and RAID ECC. SSD support includes a maximum capacity of up to 8TB and support for 3D TLC and QLC NAND flash. This new low-powered controller is designed to fill gaps in the market that the more powerful E26 controller can't serve. The low-powered nature of the new controller should enable it to work without the requirement of an SSD heatsink, which is very necessary for compact systems such as laptops and handheld gaming machines that cannot fit an SSD with a beefy heatsink. The latter is another low-power PCIe Gen 4 SSD controller aimed at the 2230 form factor M.2 SSDs designed for handheld gaming machines like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. This controller sports TSMC's older 12nm process, featuring a 4-channel configuration and what Phison calls a "Single CPU Architecture." Similar to the PS5031-E31T, this Gen 4-designed PS5027-E27T controller features 8TB storage support and supports 3D TLC and QLC NAND flash.Sequential performance maxes out at up to 7,400MB/s for reads, and 6,700 MB/s for writes. Random performance tops out at 1,200,000 IOPS for both reads and writes. For reference, these specifications only disclose what the controller is capable of, and do not represent the actual performance specifications of SSDs that might come with this controller. Phison will also demo its PS5026-E26 Max14um Gen5 SSD. Phison first showed off this drive a few months ago, touting it as the highest-performance client SSD to date. The drive performed at over 14GB/s in Crystal Disk Mark, making it faster than even the fastest consumer Gen 5 SSDs on the market today (like the Crucial T700). To hit these speeds, Phison used its E26 controller in conjunction with Micron 2400MT/s NAND flash, one of the only consumer memory chips to achieve these speeds. For cooling, Phison also went the extra mile and engineered a copper cooling system with two Frore Systems AirJet Minis. Phison's E26 controller has always been capable of achieving these speeds, but Phison wanted to remind people that speeds like this are possible. The biggest problem getting in the way of that is the lack of ultra-high speed 2400MT/s memory chips that are capable of saturating the E26 controller's bandwidth capabilities. But, now that 2400MT/s are ramping up in production, we should start seeing drives with speeds of 14GB/s shortly. Finally, Phison will unveil a new USB 4 memory controller dubbed the PS2251-21 (U21). Phison states that this is the world's first USB 4 single-chip solution for portable devices and unconventional form factors. The controller is capable of speeds of up to 4GB/s. https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/storage/phison-reveals-specs-for-new-usb-4-pcie-gen-5-ssd-hardware-more-details-at-ces-2024
  3. On an average day about a dozen new games are released on Steam. And while we think that's a good thing, it can be understandably hard to keep up with. Potentially exciting gems are sure to be lost in the deluge of new things to play unless you sort through every single game that is released on Steam. So that’s exactly what we’ve done. If nothing catches your fancy this week, we've gathered the best PC games you can play right now and a running list of the 2024 games that are launching this year.Release:‌ January 18 Developer:‌ Night Eyes Interactive Here's a gorgeous, gory, hardcore sword fighter with an instagib twist. In First Cut a successful hit on your opponent will instantly kill them, but landing that hit is the whole challenge. Swords can be aimed, attacks can be blocked, and parrying can change the course of a fight. It's a simple premise with a lot of technique-oriented complexity, and will probably appeal to people who want a more hardcore take on Nidhogg. Local multiplayer is arguably the star attraction here, but there are also two game modes for solo players, as well as a range of bizarre bonus modes (laser swords, anyone?).No Case Should Remain Unsolved is a narrative-driven detective game with the atmosphere of a hard boiled crime novel. Retired Senior Inspector Jeon Gyeong is encouraged by a young cop to revisit a cold case concerning the disappearance of a little girl. Gyeong must rifle through her unreliable memories to connect various hidden truths, which takes the form of piecing together scattered, remembered testimonies. With a runtime of no more than three hours, No Case Should Remain Unsolved is all about the slow unfurling of disturbing truth, and it currently has an "overwhelmingly positive" ranking on Steam. This Early Access game is a first-person take on Aground, a fairly well-received crafting and mining RPG. Basically, a mysterious apocalypse has occurred and humanity is doomed to an eternal life underground. It's your job to (perhaps ill-advisedly) dig your way out of this subterranean prison to see whatever is going on up on the surface nowadays. To achieve this you'll need to bolster your base and construct a variety of machines to automate mining and refine resources. There are some pretty hectic looking creatures to be encountered down in the ground as well. This Early Access period is expected to last around a year; the core of the game is there, but the surface will be expanded over the coming months, as well as other additions and improvements. https://www.pcgamer.com/five-new-steam-games-you-probably-missed-january-22-2024/

  8. 2024 is well and truly underway. The world’s biggest electronics show, CES, has already come and gone — and a lot of gadgets were announced: next-generation TVs, laptops, Qi2 charging accessories and smartphone peripherals (to name a few). Also, as of last month, Apple’s Vision Pro headset is officially available. As you probably know, new tech and gadgets get announced all the time. We’re here to make keeping track of it all easier. Below, we’ve rounded up the best new tech and gadgets that been announced thus far in 2024. https://www.gearpatrol.com/tech/best-tech-releases-2024/
  9. Some campaigns, including that of Florida Gov. and former GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis, have already been accused of using the technology. "This is really one of the big information security problems of the 21st century," said Drexel University professor Matthew Stamm. That's how Stamm sees fake media spreading online. Deepfake videos and mani[CENSORED]ted images were used to spread misinformation during the 2020 election, but with rapid advancements in artificial intelligence technology, videos and images are now looking more realistic and can be made more easily.' "You can also say 'make me an image or a video of X politician engaging in a particular behavior,' and it can make a visually realistic image," said Stamm. "Certainly visually realistic at a casual glance, which is often the way that you interact with images on social media." https://www.cbsnews.com/philadelphia/news/2024-election-campaign-artificial-intelligence-fake-videos-misinformation/
  10. Today's the day of Microsoft's next big Surface event, with the tech giant heading into its March 21 gathering under the banner of introducing us to a “new era of work” powered by AI, Copilot and Windows. And new Surface hardware, of course. I've covered Microsoft Surface launches since day zero, with the first line on my resume overlapping with the launch of the first Surface device over 10 years ago in October 2012. I reported on it then as a fresh-faced intern straight out of college, and now over a decade later I can safely say this looks like the most important Surface event since that original one. That's because the March 2024 Surface event is all about AI and the role it's going to play not just in how we interact with software, but how we use our hardware and physical devices, both at work and at play, going forward. With that in mind, here's everything you need to know about the spring 2024 Microsoft Surface event including full details of the time, date and location, all the rumored devices we're expecting to see today, and of course how to watch the Microsoft Surface event wherever you are. https://tech.co/news/microsoft-surface-event-march-2024-preview
  11. The best PC games in 2024 are those that make the most of the powerful hardware they're available on, and the vast and varied library that can be downloaded. Because of this, you never really know where you'll end up, whether it's amidst quirky indies, mind-churning strategy games, or just ports of the latest and greatest launches. There's a lot to love, and a lot of routes PC gaming can offer. For fans of using a keyboard and mouse, PC Gaming just clicks. Whether that's due to the technical advantages that the best graphics card can offer or love of some of the weirder and more esoteric games on the market, there's no denying the PC is a strong choice for primary platform. Especially now you can play most of these games on the Steam Deck or just plug in one of the best PC controllers and play games with higher framerates, resolutions, and features such as ray-tracing, DLSS, and HDR. Also, while I'm biased, if you know your way around a mouse then the PC is the best place to play first-person shooters too. Sorry, but it's true. So whether you have a tricked-out PC gaming setup or looking for games to play on your productivity laptop, we’ve put together a list of the best PC games you can find right now. Of course, not every game is for every person, but there are definitely at least one or two titles on there for you. https://www.techradar.com/news/best-pc-games

  15. It comes nearly a year after Mr Gandhi wrapped up a 4,000km-long "unity march" in which he travelled from the country's southern tip in Kanyakumari to Srinagar in Indian-administered Kashmir in the north. The journey this time would see him travel from east to west, by bus and on foot. He plans to cover 100 parliamentary constituencies across 110 districts in 15 states, many of them electorally crucial, and finish in Mumbai in 66 days. On Sunday, Congress flags fluttered in the air as Mr Gandhi addressed a rally that kicked off his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra (United India Justice March) in Imphal city, capital of the north-eastern state of Manipur. Over the past eight months, Manipur has witnessed violent ethnic clashes between its majority Meitei and minority Kuki communities. More than 200 people have been killed and thousands of families displaced by violence. But on the sunny afternoon, thousands of women cheered as top Congress leaders addressed the crowd amid massive security presence. Among them was Waikhom Ibemma Devi, who reflected on the tough life in the state. "Whenever I go to a relief camp, I feel sad looking at the victims," she said. "We understand the pain the people of Manipur have been through. And we promise you, we commit to you, that we will bring back what you valued," Mr Gandhi told the gathering. Many analysts and Congress supporters such as Tehseen Poonawala say last year's unity march had burnished Mr Gandhi's political image, "recharged party workers and gave the Congress organisation, often criticised for being lethargic, a shakeup". They expect the current campaign - aimed at demanding economic, social and political justice for the masses - to do the same. But journalist and author Neerja Chowdhury says "people like it when politicians come to them to listen but whether this makes a difference to the party's prospects in the elections is debatable". The march comes as the opposition faces the challenge of preventing the widely po[CENSORED]r Prime Minister Narendra Modi from scoring his third consecutive victory. A recent survey has predicted he will retain power. "As the battle for 2024 begins in earnest, the incumbent BJP [Bharaitya Janata Party] undeniably maintains the upper hand," said Milan Vaishnav, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The BJP has long painted Mr Gandhi as a non-serious politician born into privilege. Last week, senior party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "Rahul Gandhi is not taken seriously in our country."Following the Congress' recent losses in three state elections, the BJP now rules 12 of 28 states in India with coalition governments in three. The Congress, which ruled India for decades after independence in 1947, has been reduced to three states. The opposition says that under Mr Modi's 10-year leadership, there's been a backslide in democracy and civil liberties, misuse of federal investigative agencies, bulldozing of government institutions and a proliferation of a culture of hate and violence against the minorities and marginalised communities - allegations the government strongly denies. The recent suspension of nearly 150 opposition MPs over their demand for a government statement on a parliament security breach has further strained relations between the two sides. In such a politically charged environment, it's no surprise that some, including former Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha, are calling the next elections a "do or die situation" for the opposition. The party believes that Mr Gandhi's justice march and the choice of strife-torn Manipur to kick off the campaign will help them gain public and media attention. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-67911170
  16. CHUBYNSKE, Ukraine (AP) — Natalia Popova has found a new purpose in life: Rescuing wild animals and pets from the devastation wrought by the war in Ukraine. “They are my life,” says the 50-year-old, stroking a light-furred lioness like a kitten. From inside an enclosure, the animal rejoices at the attention, lying on her back and stretching her paws up toward her caretaker. Popova, in cooperation with the animal protection group UA Animals, has already saved more than 300 animals from the war; 200 of them went abroad and 100 found new homes in western Ukraine, which is considered safer. Many of them were wild animals who were kept as pets at private homes before their owners fled Russian shelling and missiles. Popova’s shelter in the Kyiv region village of Chubynske now houses 133 animals. It’s a broad menagerie, including 13 lions, a leopard, a tiger, three deer, wolves, foxes, raccoons and roe deer, as well as domesticated animals like horses, donkeys, goats, rabbits, dogs, cats and birds. ADVERTISEMENT The animals awaiting evacuation to Poland were rescued from hot spots such as eastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv and Donetsk regions, which see daily bombardments and active fighting. The Ukrainian soldiers who let Popova know when animals near the front lines need help joke that she has many lives, like a cat. https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-animals-pets-99eee46cf74470edb3c01f1ee102b003

  18. Paris 2024 has taken the opportunity provided by the IOC in the Olympic Agenda 2020 to propose additional sports to enhance its programme and overall concept. The IOC is keen to set a new standard for inclusive, gender-balanced and youth-centred games. Paris 2024 submitted its proposal to the IOC to integrate four new sports that are closely associated with youth and reward creativity and athletic performance. These sports are breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing. All four are easy to take up and participants form communities that are very active on social media. Over the next five years, the inclusion of these events in the Olympic Games will help inspire millions of children to take up sport. The IOC confirmed the event programme, related athlete quotas and the integration of new sports for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 in December 2020. https://www.paris2024.org/en/olympic-sports/
  19. t’s 2064. A Queensland great-grandmother, let’s call her Lisa, is sweltering in her living room as she waits for a driverless car to take her to hospital. Her robot carer delivers water and medication while a nanobot circulating in Lisa’s bloodstream sends real-time health data to her doctors. Lisa’s health crisis was sparked by a recent bushfire, a regular problem by mid-century. The air is still thick with smoke and the temperature has broken 48 degrees for the second time in a week. Heat from the fire destroyed her solar-power system and her home’s air filtration and cooling systems have failed. She is struggling to breathe and heat stroke is setting in. Even at age 98, Lisa lives alone. More than 4 per cent of the po[CENSORED]tion is now over 85, up from around 2 per cent in 2000, and it is common for Australia’s elderly to lead independent lives. But after a conversation with her doctor via hologram, it is decided Lisa will head to hospital to stabilise her vital signs. As she waits, Lisa uses the computer interface embedded in her brain to message her children, using just her thoughts, updating them on her health. It is all so different to the 2020s when Lisa was caring for her own mother — tapping on the window of her aged care home during the COVID pandemic, trying to sync up a charged iPad with an internet connection and an agreed time to chat over FaceTime or WhatsApp. How wonderful it would be to chat to her mother now, Lisa thinks, as she opens an app and calls up the digital clone of her husband Dave, who died four years ago aged 101. This digital twin sounds exactly like him and is programmed with hours of memories, ideas and opinions that can be used to generate conversations years after he has passed away. As Dave’s holographic image sits before her, they talk through happy memories together and he counsels her to stay positive while she waits for her transport to arrive (solar powered, of course). https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-03-20/future-ai-what-will-life-be-like-in-2060s/103408964
  20. The Israel-Gaza war has taken a severe toll on journalists since Hamas launched its unprecedented attack against Israel on October 7 and Israel declared war on the militant Palestinian group, launching strikes on the blockaded Gaza Strip. CPJ is investigating all reports of journalists and media workers killed, injured, or missing in the war, which has led to the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992. As of March 21, 2024, CPJ’s preliminary investigations showed at least 95 journalists and media workers were among the more than 32,000 killed since the war began on October 7—with more than 31,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza and the West Bank and 1,200 deaths in Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told Reuters and Agence France Press news agencies in October that it could not guarantee the safety of their journalists operating in the Gaza Strip, after they had sought assurances that their journalists would not be targeted by Israeli strikes, according to a Reuters report. Journalists in Gaza face particularly high risks as they try to cover the conflict during the Israeli ground assault, including devastating Israeli airstrikes, disrupted communications, supply shortages, and extensive power outages. As of March 21: 95 journalists and media workers were confirmed dead: 90 Palestinian, 2 Israeli, and 3 Lebanese. 16 journalists were reported injured. 4 journalists were reported missing. 25 journalists were reported arrested. Multiple assaults, threats, cyberattacks, censorship, and killings of family members. CPJ is also investigating numerous unconfirmed reports of other journalists being killed, missing, detained, hurt, or threatened, and of damage to media offices and journalists’ homes. “CPJ emphasizes that journalists are civilians doing important work during times of crisis and must not be targeted by warring parties,” said Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator. “Journalists across the region are making great sacrifices to cover this heart-breaking conflict. Those in Gaza, in particular, have paid, and continue to pay, an unprecedented toll and face exponential threats. Many have lost colleagues, families, and media facilities, and have fled seeking safety when there is no safe haven or exit.” The list published here includes names based on information obtained from CPJ’s sources in the region and media reports. It includes all journalists* involved in news-gathering activity. It is unclear whether all of these journalists were covering the conflict at the time of their deaths, but CPJ has included them in our count as we investigate their circumstances. The list is being updated on a regular basis. https://cpj.org/2024/03/journalist-casualties-in-the-israel-gaza-conflict/
