While Instagram is introducing a few features this week to appeal to those who want to collaborate on photos and videos, the company is finally allowing posts to be created on the desktop. After making its mark with Instagram Stories, its take on Snapchat Stories, the company wants to refine other aspects of its app. The Reels feature is the company’s take on TikTok, enabling users to create and share videos which is being updated this week, but there’s more room for improvement that’s about to be brought out. If you’re a heavy user of Instagram, this looks to be a significant update that’s going to benefit in a number of ways. What are the new features coming up? One feature is already rolling out, where the company is testing a way of allowing two accounts to co-author a post or a Reel, called Collabs.Sharing in this way will display the post in the Feed or Reels header to both sets of followers. You can start a Fundraiser directly from the ‘+’ button in the app, and attribute it to a post. This is set to go live later today across all platforms. Reels are also seeing two new effects called Superbeat and Dynamic Lyrics. Inspired by TikTok, this allows a Reel post to have special effects and lyrics automatically generated based on the song chosen. This can save you time in making sure the effects sync up with the song you’ve picked. The last feature has been long requested, where you will be able to create a post or a video in under one minute within a web browser. This launches on October 21, so anyone with an iPad or a Surface will be able to post to their feed on Safari or Microsoft Edge.Analysis: posting on an iPad is about to be much easier While improvements to Reels and better fundraising prompts are welcome, the big takeaway is being able to post a photo or video from within a web browser. It’s something that users have been wanting to do for years. iPad users have had to use an enlarged version of Instagram through the iPhone app, but now it’ll be a matter of using a web browser to not only view, but also to post. This is a smart move from Instagram, as it saves the company from creating a dedicated app for iPadOS, Windows 11 and even Linux if you check your feed from there. While it’s only limited to photos and videos of up to one minute, that’s still going to please a lot of users who don’t use Reels or the Live features that the app brings. Instagram is already setting itself up to be the video app of choice compared to Snapchat and TikTok, but time will tell if these companies will follow suit and allow posts to be created and edited on the web as well.

According to a report by VideoCardz, we have our first look at Gigabyte's Z690 Xtreme E-ATX motherboard supporting Intel's future Alder Lake processors. This board will be tiered right above the Z690 Master and appears to be jam-packed full of features, including a large RGB Memory cover, and dual PCI-E 5.0 x16 slots for the future SSDs and graphics cards. The most pronounced feature of the board is the large Aorus branded RGB panel that covers all four of the DDR5 slots located next to the LGA 1700 socket. This is the first time we've seen a full RGB cover included with any motherboard and could be optimal for DDR5 modules that lack heat spreaders or RGB lighting to keep the motherboard aesthetically appealing. The cover could also provide some sort of cooling but we won't know for sure until the board's release. As far as actual memory performance is concerned, we only know the board is compatible with DDR5's 4800MHz JEDEC standard. The board's maximum supported memory frequency with overclocking still remains a mystery. The most interesting feature of the Z690 Xtreme is the inclusion of dual PCIe Gen 5 x16 slots on the motherboard. This is the first motherboard we've ever seen to come with two Gen 5 slots and should be optimal for the select number of power users who need to run two Gen 5 devices at the same time. For now, this feature will remain relatively unused until PCIe Gen 5 drives, graphics cards, and other cards become mainstream. Aesthetically the Z690 Extreme has a couple of design changes compared to its predecessor, the board now comes with a matte black finish with gold-colored accents instead of silver, and the RGB lights now show a purple and blue finish. The memory cover in particular makes this board stand out from the rest of its brethren, giving the motherboard a very premium feel. The remaining features Videocardz revealed include support for 10Gb ethernet, WiFi 6 connectivity, and Thunderbolt 4 with display support of up to 5K resolutions at 60Hz. Everything else remains unknown at this time. But, with the Z690 Xtreme being one of Gigabyte's flagship boards, we can expect it to have one of the best power delivery setups in the 600 series lineup, which will be optimal for overclocking Alder Lake's unlocked SKUs. BoarVideocardz says the board will be out on November 4th. So we expect Alder Lake to arrive around that time as well, if true.

After nearly a full year of speculation and hope, God of War, Sony's tale of Olympian demi-gods, Nordic deities, and the trials and tribulations fatherhood, is now listed on Steam. "We’re thrilled to announce that God of War (2018) will be coming to PC on January 14, 2022!" Sony Santa Monica Studio senior community manager Grace Orlady wrote. "All of us at Santa Monica Studio have been humbled by the immense amount of support and passions fans of the God of War series have shown in the latest chapter of Kratos’ story since its release. As of August 2021, 19.5MM copies for God of War on PlayStation 4 have been sold through and we can’t wait to share that experience with a whole new group of players on PC." Make no mistake, this is a very big deal. Sony has previously expressed interest in bringing more of its first-party games to PC, and has recently committed to some big ones including big names like Horizon Zero Dawn and Uncharted 4. But God of War is not just another PlayStation game—it's a capital-P "Prestige" title that's won numerous acclaim and awards for both its axe-swinging action and its effective portrayal of fatherhood and family. It recently claimed IGN's big "Best Videogame of All Time" poll, and GamesRadar put a very fine point on it with a glowing 5/5 review, saying, "I don't think it's possible to overstate just how good this is."The PC version of God of War promises a range of enhancements including "high fidelity graphics," with support for 4K resolutions, ultrawide displays, unlocked framerates, and advanced settings including higher resolution shadows, "improved" screen space reflections, and support for GTAO and SSDO. Nvidia DLSS support will also be available at launch to help with framerates. Controllers and fully customizable mouse-and-keyboard setups will be supported. The PC release will also come with some bonus digital content: Death’s Vow Armor Sets for Kratos and Atreus Exile’s Guardian Shield Skin Buckler of the Forge Shield Skin Shining Elven Soul Shield Skin Dökkenshieldr Shield Skin There are no system requirements yet, but the game itself is still a little ways off: God of War is available for pre-purchase now for $50/£40/€50, but won't release until January 14, 2022. A sequel, God of War: Ragnarok, is also set to arrive in 2022 on the PlayStation 5—perhaps this means we'll see it coming our way sooner rather than later, too.

Google has announced it is pushing out a simple but important new feature for its instant messaging service, Chat. As per the company’s latest blog post, Google Chat and Spaces (the group chat equivalent) will soon benefit from the ability to mark messages as read or unread, on both mobile and desktop. “Marking a message as unread can help remind you to return to it later in Chat. In 1:1 and group DMs, you can mark a thread as unread starting from a particular message,” wrote Google. To access the functionality, users can hover over a relevant message and select the dedicated “mark as unread” button from the pop-up menu. The new feature is rolling out incrementally, but should be available to all Google account holders by early November. Google Chat upgrade Although Google has invested plenty of energy and resources into its Workspace suite since the start of the pandemic, the company’s messaging service has lagged behind the competition in more ways than one. With the ability to mark messages as unread, Google is at least addressing one of the insufficiencies separating Chat from the likes of Slack and Teams. But the company still has a long way to go. Although the Google Chat progressive web app (PWA) offers more flexibility and functionality than the old browser extension, it’s not as slick as the native clients offered by other services on the market.Further, while Google has worked to deliver new synergies between Chat and its other products (Drive, Meet, Calendar etc.), the service does not benefit from a deep range of third-party integrations in the same way others do. That said, the signs suggest Google is aware of these kinds of shortcomings. Last week, for instance, the firm announced it will increase its investment in the Workspace app marketplace, with a view to helping customers squeeze more value from its productivity software.

Windows 11 has become one of the most divisive and confusing OS releases in recent history, despite Microsoft's efforts to announce and detail the system's capabilities, requirements, and differences relative to Windows 10. While Microsoft has accompanied communications on Windows 11 with stringent system requirements, there are already numerous ways to circumvent hardware limitations floating through the internet. The latest one such experiment, carried out by user @Carlos_SM1995 (via Notebookcheck), actually managed to install and run the OS on supposedly - according to Microsoft - incompatible hardware. What is this mysterious chip that can actually run Microsoft's latest OS? It's an all-powerful, single-core Pentium 4 661 CPU from 2006. It does feature Hyper-Threading, though. To be fair to Microsoft, the system requirements refer to the hardware configurations that can run Windows 11 out of the box, and which can sustain all of its features - including security-focused ones, which were the basis for the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) requirement, and others. It certainly sounds fair to say that Microsoft would finalize its system requirements based on users taking advantage of all of the OS' features - and it really wouldn't make much sense to take any other course of action. Some of Windows 11 security features require specific hardware implementations to run smoothly when they're actually active - but naturally, should those features be disabled, the performance hit doesn't actually register for the end-user. As such, we would say that the fault lies not on Microsoft; as it is one thing to run the OS as intended by the company. The other is to find ways to skirt some of those requirements by disabling features that one will not use - such as TPM, Secure Boot or Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) features. This is exactly what was done to run this particular Windows 11 OS build and the system even receives updates via the integrated Windows Update functionality, as you can see in the video below. What Microsoft could have done, of course, is clarify which features can be disabled by users in order to achieve broader backward compatibility. But again, it doesn't seem like such a great idea for Microsoft to ship Windows 11 with security-facing features and then telling users how to disable them - that's just not a good IT security practice, period. There are naturally risks when disabling OS features - especially security-centric ones, and Microsoft is playing it safe. Yet ultimately, this proves that users can still have control over what hardware they run their Windows 11 build - even if it just so happens that the hardware is a Pentium 4 from 2006.

As is now obligatory for any kind of service game, Fortnite has announced its 2021 Halloween event: The Wrath of the Cube Queen. Fortnite being Fortnite, however, the largest live service game in the world and the vanguard of Tim Sweeney's beloved metaverse, it's doing it at quite the scale. Fortnite's had a thing with cubes that now goes back years, and the Fortnitemares event is all about basically a cube war. Players have previously fought against the cube monsters, but now the cube queen's turned up with some giant ones called Caretakers. "Tall, foreboding, shadowy apparitions," it says here, making them sound quite romantic really. They should be carrying a box of Milk Tray. But alas "their spectral tendrils pull you directly into The Sideways for a showdown on their home turf. Survive a Caretaker’s assault and you’ll walk away all the richer." As part of the event the Horde Rush mode returns, which players can enter as a team, and comes with its own quests and scheduled tournaments. So: kill the little things, kill the new big things, get lots of loot. There's a whole bunch of cosmetic stuff included in the Halloween event, listed in the blog, and the whole shebang comes with a 'punchcard' of quests to earn bits and bobs. Most eyebrow-raising is that "Ariana Grande has returned to the Island, but now in new gear ready to take down monsters." 'Spacefarer Ariana Grande' comes with her own monster hunter questline that of course has its own Grande rewards. There's also some Ghostbusters gear inspired by the new film, and alongside all the new loot the daily and weekly quests have been rejigged to basically be more generous: "now offering additional objectives and more XP for each completion." Rather sweetly, this update also comes with a papercraft blog with various templates for Fortnite-related masks and figures. In case you're, god forbid, tempted to go outside on Halloween. It is rather tempting to build one's own Peely. This rather bland banana mascot is somehow now the game's true star: perhaps because of the legal arguments over whether it's naked. The Wrath of the Cube Queen event is live now and will run until 9am ET on November. There's also more to come, including a series of animated shorts that can be viewed in-game called... Shortnitemares. Now that's what I call ghastly.

New features for Microsoft Teams are being held back, despite having the potential to make the collaboration platform the undisputed market leader. In various threads on the Teams User Voice forum, an official channel for customers to submit ideas for consideration, the company has acknowledged the validity of users’ complaints. However, solutions for many of these issues do not appear to be forthcoming. Although some of the most upvoted ideas have already been implemented by Microsoft (like ability to reply to a specific chat message, which received 50,000 votes) and others are under active development, many more projects appear to have stalled completely.Microsoft Teams feedback A common complaint on the User Voice forum is that Teams is not optimized for use in a small window, unlike rival applications such as Slack. The problem was first noted in 2016 and the forum post has since accrued almost 21,000 upvotes.“The current chat layout is not suited for professional chats; it’s way too space-consuming,” complained the original poster, who called for a more compact design to accommodate different types of monitor setup. Members of the Microsoft team have posted in the thread on 25 occasions, calling for further feedback, announcing the issue was under review and providing updates on progress. However, the latest post (from June) simply updated the status to “Planned”, without providing any further details, to the annoyance of some forum members. Another post, which calls for the ability to move a project channel from one team to another, has even more public support, with 32,000 upvotes. The thread was also created in 2016, but the latest post from Microsoft (which is itself now a year and a half old) explains that the item has been put on hold for the foreseeable future. “This continues to be on our backlog due to the prioritization of other work items. We will update when there is more to share,” wrote a member of the Teams engineering department. This is not to suggest Microsoft hasn’t invested sufficient energy and resources into Teams; since the pandemic began, the company has pushed out a bounty of new features for the platform. However, the stagnant forum posts do call into question the effectiveness of the company’s user feedback mechanisms. TechRadar Pro has asked Microsoft for comment on its specific plans with regards to the most po[CENSORED]r ideas from the User Voice forum.

According to a report from Phoronix, the Linux 5.15 kernel is receiving a new fix that involves disabling AMD's Secure Memory Encryption, or SME. This feature is normally enabled by default, but due to unexpected boot failures on some AMD machines, SME will now be disabled by default. Devs will update the Linux 5.15 kernel first, but the change will also move to prior kernels. AMD Secure Memory Encryption is a feature exposed to AMD's EPYC and Ryzen Pro processors that allows the CPUs to encrypt the memory at a hardware level. AMD says the feature offers no significant impact on system performance and works with any OS and application because it's hardware-accelerated and doesn't rely upon software. Despite the benefits, the feature has caused bugs to appear in the Linux drivers with the interaction with the IOMMU and graphics drivers, causing Linux machines to fail at startup. Impacted systems also aren't recognizing the encrypted RAM, particularly because some devices don't have the correct Direct Memory Acces API or firmware to support the SMU.Phoronix notes this bug happens mostly on Raven Ridge APUs, but it can also happen with other Ryzen chips as well. For now, the Linux kernel maintainers will disable SME temporarily until a solution comes about that can intelligently determine when to enable and disable SME. The issue does not impact Windows users.

Time is the most valuable resource in Age of Darkness: Final Stand. RTS magic means the quarries will never run short of iron and stone, and the trees will always have more wood to harvest. But replacing every soldier killed during a careless expansion push means wasting precious seconds that could've been spent reinforcing my defenses for the next Death Night. Like They Are Billions and other defensive strategy games, Age of Darkness only gives you so much time to prepare before thousands of undead Nightmares come crashing against your walls. Here you're tasked with defending what remains of civilization by building up a stronghold to withstand the Death Nights—floods of undead sent against you every few day/night cycles. Also, there's a deadly fog, which the Steam page references so many times I feel like someone will be insulted if I don't mention it. Fog: deadly. That'll be on the final exam.A freshly started game in survival mode will look familiar to anyone with RTS experience. You have your central keep, a champion unit and a handful of basic troops, and some nearby resources to begin harvesting. But pretty quickly, Age of Darkness begins diverging from the classic formulas. The world surrounding your base is more threatening than in other RTS games. Packs of Nightmares are a constant presence across the map, and they can gnaw through your units if you're not paying close attention. Resources aren't abundant, and they're constrained by tight supply and po[CENSORED]tion caps. As a result, your expansion must be cautious and considered, which really fits the mood of desperate survival in humanity's last bastion. Overextension or miscalculation usually means death by way of wasted time and resources. The scope of strategy is focused. Expansion is checked by tight resources, time constraints, limited safe space—and you won't even know which direction the next Death Night will spill from until the morning before it descends. You're desperate survivors; you don't have the means to build a sprawling mazework. Instead, in the four minutes an in-game day lasts, you're identifying the single chokepoint with the best odds of weathering the storm, and cramming it with as many walls, ballista towers, and freshly trained troops as time will allow. If you're lucky, your defenses will hold until you've put all the oncoming Nightmares through the meat grinder, whether it takes hundreds or thousands. You won't always be lucky. Thanks to the roguelike flavoring, though, death doesn't really feel like failure. It's just the inevitable end of another run. When I fail to survive a Death Night, I'm excited to jump back in and put what I'd learned from my last attempt to use, whether it was strategic knowledge like when to prioritize certain resources, or mechanical knowledge like realizing I could build within a scouting unit's line of sight to establish a defensive foothold. Randomized elements keep the tactics from becoming too flow-charted. Malices provide the Nightmares with a different bonus during every Death Night, and you're rewarded with a choice from a random set of Blessings each assault you beat. You might survive a night in which the undead have a chance to convert your slain soldiers, and earn a chance to recruit an extra troop whenever you train a unit at your barracks. While they're a satisfying challenge to crack, the Death Nights are visually a little lackluster, even with the "SwarmTech" that claims to allow tens of thousands of AI units on-screen at once. Maybe that's true, but that deadly fog™ (which is one of the best-looking parts of the game, actually) obscures most of those units, except ones that shuffle to the front to smack at your walls. The rest just kind of wait their turn, patiently milling around while your archers pepper them with arrows. Despite being built around defense, Age of Darkness inspires a proactive style of play I found really refreshing. I'm the type of RTS player who naturally turtles up behind a barricade of photon cannons, slowly accumulating resources until I can release a glob of teched-up, high-end units to steamroll an enemy settlement without much micromanagement. But it was clear before my first Death Night that those instincts were a death sentence. I enjoyed the challenge of striking out on excursions without screwing up my whole run. While there's currently only the singleplayer survival mode, the Age of Darkness Early Access roadmap lists an eventual multiplayer mode and story campaign, as well as new heroes, units, and buildings. As it stands, Age of Darkness shows a lot of promise.
